DENPASAR - Man-made or artificial tourism is one of the tourist attractions in addition to the natural and cultural ones. However, in Indonesia, especially Bali, the appeal of artificial tourist attraction remains under eco-tourism and cultural tourism. More specifically, the artificial attraction can be said not to run smoothly in Bali. “The government should realize that manmade tourism development in Bali does not run smoothly due to lack of public support,” said the Director of Tourism Studies Graduate Program, Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Komang Gede Bendesa, in Denpasar.

Mother Teresa borne to sainthood by complex, mysterious process
VATICAN CITY - The canonisation of Mother Teresa of Calcutta marked the culmination of a process - sometimes called “the saint-making machine” - that is long, complex, expensive, opaque and often contentious. The Catholic Church posthumously confers sainthood on people considered so holy during their lives that they are now believed to be with God and can intercede with him to perform miracles. Such is the status of the nun acclaimed for her work in the slums of the Indian city now known as Kolkata, who Pope Francis on Sunday declared a saint in front of an estimated 120,000 pilgrims. But the path to sainthood is often more bureaucratic than beatific. Mother Teresa died in 1997 and the late Pope John Paul, who met her
often, bent Vatican rules to grant a dispensation allowing the procedure to establish her case for sainthood to be launched two years after her death instead of the usual five. He had even considered making her a saint immediately but cardinals convinced him that it would set a dangerous precedent for the future, even though in the early Church people
were acclaimed saints upon their death. The current process, known as a “cause”, begins at the local level when a diocese believes that someone in their community lived a saintly life. When it is formally open, he or she get the title “Servant of God.” The postulator, in this case Canadian priest Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, sends voluminous documentation to the Vatican, where its Congregation for the Causes of Saints assigns it to a “relator”. The relator oversees it, and together with theologians, recommends if it is worthy enough to continue. If it does, the candidate gets the title “venerable”. The next step is
beatification. This requires a miracle, which is usually the inexplicable curing of a sick person. The first miracle attributed to Mother Teresa, and which allowed the Church to beatify her, concerned an Indian woman, Monica Bersa, whose stomach tumour is said to have disappeared after she and others prayed to the nun in 1998, a year after Mother Teresa died. A medical commission working with the Vatican reviews each case to decide if there is any known medical explanation for the healing.

If desiring to bring in more travelers, it should not solely rely on cultural and natural, but also on artificial attractions. Then, currently there is Benoa Bay reclamation plan. He added that reclamation is not appropriate with Balinese cultural tourism. “Reclamation will change the face of Bali. We worry that Bali will no longer be attractive after the reclamation,” said the former Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University. On the other hand, continued Bendesa, the government has always hypothesized that if the Benoa Bay is successful it will benefit economically. In addition, there will be 200,000 more job opportunities to reduce unemployment and improve social welfare. In fact, there is no direct relationship between the reclamation and the
reduction of unemployment as well as poverty. “Working in tourism sector must comply with certain competency requirements while the poor and unemployment occur because of economic restrictions so that they are unable to continue their education pursuant to the qualifications required by the tourism sector,” he explained. According to Bendesa, the government should adhere to the spirit of tourism development in Bali namely cultural tourism based on Tri Hita Karana. In accordance with the Tri Hita Karana philosophy, the development in Bali should be based on the principle of balance and harmony. Balance in development can be realized by distributing investment in tourism sector from South Bali region to the other regions of Bali. Earlier, Deputy of Foreign Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, I Gde Pitana, said that the cultural tourism in Indonesia is enthused by 60 percent. It is much higher when compared to nature tourism enthused by as much as 35 percent and 5 percent
of artificial tourism. “For Bali, the latest data regarding the culture are approximately 63 percent. So, the cultural tourism becomes the main motivation, main attraction and main perception. After arriving in Bali, travelers may also visit the destination beyond the culture. It does not matter because in tourism there is no single motivation,” he said. According to Pitana, cultural tourism has been heavily criticized by many circles due to the fact, perception and observation that tourism is claimed to frequently damage culture. In many regions, the development of cultural tourism also makes local cultures marginalized. “We the government even consider that the criticism is not always true. Evidently, tourism even becomes a vehicle that can revitalize the culture itself. Tourism can also make the culture revived. In terms of the dance, for instance, where does appear more new creations whether in the tourist areas such as Bali or in the NTT having no tourism? I am sure the answer is in Bali,” he explained. SINGARAJA - Woven bamboo craft products made are widely produced by community as a creative home industry. Such woven bamboo craft has long penetrated foreign markets such as Italy and Japan. Similarly, travelers are interested in purchasing due to uniqueness and appeal of the craft design. Gede Widarma, for instance, is a bamboo craftsman from Wanasari hamlet, Tigawasa, Banjar. He produces bamboo handicrafts with several colleagues and their products are very demanded by tourists overseas. Bamboo is processed accurately in order to produce crafts with high artistic value. “Quite a lot of foreign travelers like and order the bamboo crafts typically made at Tigawasa village. Lately, the demand for this bamboo craft is quite high of different models and designs,” he said, not long ago. He mentioned that typical woven bamboo crafts of Tigawasa village include tissue boxes, photo frames and the like. In order to introduce the distinctiveness of Bali, crafters combine the product with perforated coin and Balinese patterned yarns. The perforated coin is meant to indicate so that buyers know if the product is made by Balinese artisans. “Such unique model is widely on sale in the market and sell well because it offers Balinese
typical characteristics. Buyers purchase it for souvenir in their home country. They often order directly to the artisans or buy at some art shops,” he explained. Widarma has deeply involved in this bamboo handicraft business from 1999. At the beginning, he had difficulty in promoting the handicraft products due to lack of marketing agents. Over time, Widarma offers his products to a number art shops in Bali to help facilitate the marketing of the woven bamboo crafts. “Thankfully, within some years his order shows an increase. The delivery can reach 100 to 150 pieces per week or highly depends on the order of clients. The mostly desired craft products are tissue box containing combination of ornaments and variations with the price range of IDR 125,000 to IDR 150,000 per piece,” he said. He applies dye technique for the coloring. It is meant to give advantage to the handicraft products so that they are able to compete against the other products from outside the region. “We often participate in craft fairs in Jakarta and other regions in the country. We get quite positive response from the community of buyers regarding our products. The demand is high enough so that our craft stock is quickly sold out,” he concluded. (kmb34)

“If you are wishing to make Bali sustainable, be a farmer. But I want to be a smart farmer, know what the market wants,” said Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, in the interactive open house at the Wantilan Hall of the Bali House of Representatives, Saturday (Sep. 3). Farmers in particular, continued Pastika, has been often dissolved in suryak siu or bandwagon by planting a commodity widely cultivated by other people regardless the market demand. Eventually, the market becomes saturated and it causes the commodity prices to slump in the market. In addition, farmers never try to improve the quality of their agricultural products. Here, the role of the experts and scholars in agriculture is much needed for the advancement of agriculture in Bali. “So, now I will give you an example. Especially for the scholars of agriculture, it will mean nothing to learn the agricultural science
if you do not want to be farmers, right? Farming does not necessarily need a wide area. I also do farming at the office. Now, I do not need to buy banana. I’m getting bored of it because of having planted banana and so have the papaya, chili and eggplant. We are planting them alone,” he explained. Pastika added that agricultural experts and scholars should help find solutions if there are diseases or pests attacking the crops of farmers. Primarily, they help improve the quality of agricultural products so as to be more easily absorbed by the market. “For examples, the grapes of Seririt from my childhood until now remains sour. Where are the wine connoisseurs, please help make it sweet, durable and the like. So, we do not need to import wine and our farmers will go prosperous. Hopefully, the scholars could play their role, do not just talk. This is what I mean,” he explained. According to Pastika, when the
quality is good, the agricultural products will definitely be purchased. One of the buyers is hotel, which actually requires the supply of agricultural products every day. However, the agricultural products of Bali has only been slightly absorbed into the hotel industry due to the matter of poor quality and non-sustainable production. “Every day, hotels need papayas, tomatoes and oranges, can we supply them? Cianjur Restaurant, for instance, needs 500 kg of carp every day, but none is produced in Bali because we cannot raise it. The expert of fishery must try to do this. Chicken betutu of Men Tempeh at Gilimanuk needs nearly 1,000 heads of chicken each day and all of them are brought in East Java. Why? Because we do not want to raise chicken, why must young coconut leaf be purchased from outside the region? Because Balinese people do not want to climb, they are tired to climb. The wage is more expensive than the price of young coconut leaf. In short, this becomes a paradox, where we think A, and our lips say A, but perform B. ELBEYLI - Turkey and its rebel allies opened a new line of attack in northern Syria on Saturday, as Turkish tanks rolled across the border and Syrian fighters swept in from the west to take villages held by Islamic State. The incursion was launched by Turkey from Kilis province - an area frequently targeted by Islamic State rockets - and coincided with a separate push by the Turkish-backed Syrian rebels, who seized several villages further to the east. By supporting the rebels, mainly Arabs and Turkmen fighting under the loose banner of the Free Syrian Army, Turkey is hoping to drive out Islamic State militants and check the advance of U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish fighters. The rebels last week took the frontier town of Jarablus with Turkish support. The operation, called Euphrates Shield, is Ankara’s first full-scale Syrian incursion since the start of the five-year-old war. On Saturday the tanks crossed the frontier and entered the Syrian rebelcontrolled town of al-Rai to support the
new offensive, a rebel spokesman and monitors said. Al-Rai is about 55 km (34 miles) west of Jarablus, and part of a 90-km corridor near the Turkish border that Ankara says it is clearing of jihadists and protecting from Kurdish militia expansion. The rebels then seized villages to the east and the south of al-Rai, according to one rebel official. “They took several villages, about eight villages. At first they took two and withdrew from them, but then reinforcements came and there was an advance,” Zakaria Malahifji of the Aleppo-based Fastaqim group told Reuters. JAKARTA - Indonesian police have arrested a suspected terrorist of the Katibah Gigih Rahmat (KGR) group in Batam, Sumatras Riau Islands province. “On Saturday, a member of KGR group was arrested from the Maxxis internet service kiosk in Fanindo housing complex, Batu Aji,” the National Polices head of public information bureau Brigadier General Agus Rianto, said in a text message. The suspected terrorist, identified by his initials as LH (24), is an unemployed resident of Taman Carina housing complex Block 41, Batu Aji. As a member of the KGR, led by Gigih Rahmat Dewa, LH is believed to have been involved in helping wanted terror suspect from Uighur, China, known as Dony, to remain in hiding. He also facilitated Indonesian citizens wishing to go to Syria. Besides, he aided two foreigners from Uighur to enter Batam and in receiving funds from the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) to fund
the duo. “Together with the KGR group members, he attended a drill using airsoft guns and airguns in preparations for leaving for Syria,” he added. LH is also believed to have participated in plotting to attack Marina Bay in Singapore. Earlier, Indonesias anti-terror Densus 88 squad, in cooperation with the Riau Islands police, had arrested six suspected terrorists in Batam on Friday (Aug 5). NEW YORK - A powerful and deadly storm churned off the U.S. Middle Atlantic Coast on Sunday, where it was expected to spoil the Labor Day holiday weekend with high winds, soaking rains and surging seas after passing over North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The storm, dubbed Hermine, claimed at least two lives, in Florida and North Carolina. It was classified as a Category 1 hurricane until it lost strength while cutting across Florida and Georgia, but forecasters expected winds to return to hurricane force of more than 74 mph (119 kph) by Sunday evening. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) expected the storm to move slowly up the coast before stalling off New Jersey, where it could linger for days. “It’s going to sit offshore and it is going to be a tremendous coastal event with a dangerous storm surge and lots of larger waves probably causing significant beach erosion, for the next few days,” said senior hurricane specialist Daniel Brown. The surge was expected to extend from Virginia to New Jersey. The NHC forecast the storm would turn northeast and north later on Sunday, eventually moving to about 100 miles south of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, by Wednesday evening, and continue on an east-northeast track over the following 24 hours. To reach the area from the Pemuteran main road there is a narrow road passing through a small jungle and the local houses. From Melanting Temple parking lot you can see the stairs that we need to climb to get into the temple compound. Two huge statues of dragons decorate the main gate and from below the stairway the temple looks majestic. On the way to the main gate there is a small place where the people who are going to pray put their offerings and get the holy water to clean their mind before they go further to the main court. Instead of sending off France defender Djibril Sidibe for a hard foul into the left leg of Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi three minutes into a friendly, Kuipers pulled out a yellow card instead. It’s exactly what FIFA was hoping for from video assistance tests for referees — keeping interruptions to a minimum and maintaining the flow of play. “The feedback I got in just 10 seconds convinced me to give a yellow instead of sending off the player,” Kuipers said Friday, a day after France’s 3-1 win. Nishikori plays French bogeyman to reach U.S. Open last 16
NEW YORK - Sixth seed Kei Nishikori continued to be a French bogeyman, beating a sluggish Nicolas Mahut 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 in the third round at the U.S. Open on Saturday. With a 10-1 record against Frenchmen this season, Nishikori surely was pleased to see four players from France in his quarter of the draw, and he added the 34-year-old Mahut’s scalp to his growing collection. While Nishikori, who reached the U.S. Open final in 2014, will not be happy dropping the first set, the 26-year-old Japanese will be upbeat about the finish after surrendering just five games in the next three sets. PEMUTERAN - Melanting Temple nestles in the middle of a jungle on a foot hill in Pemuteran, North Bali. A huge parking lot is available for visitors and some warung stand in the area providing drinks and snacks. The jungle has turned from wild into a bit civilized with the street lights stretching on the road sides and the parking lot. NEW YORK - A powerful and deadly storm churned off the U.S. Middle Atlantic Coast on Sunday, where it was expected to spoil the Labor Day holiday weekend with high winds, soaking rains and surging seas after passing over North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The storm, dubbed Hermine, claimed at least two lives, in Florida and North Carolina. It was classified as a Category 1 hurricane until it lost strength while cutting across Florida and Georgia, but forecasters expected winds to return to hurricane force of more than 74 mph (119 kph) by Sunday evening. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) expected the storm to move slowly up the coast before stalling off New Jersey, where it could linger for days. “It’s going to sit offshore and it is going to be a tremendous coastal event with a dangerous storm surge and lots of larger waves probably causing significant beach erosion, for the next few days,” said senior hurricane specialist Daniel Brown. The surge was expected to extend from Virginia to New Jersey. JAKARTA - Indonesian police have arrested a suspected terrorist of the Katibah Gigih Rahmat (KGR) group in Batam, Sumatras Riau Islands province. “On Saturday, a member of KGR group was arrested from the Maxxis internet service kiosk in Fanindo housing complex, Batu Aji,” the National Polices head of public information bureau Brigadier General Agus Rianto, said in a text message. The suspected terrorist, identified by his initials as LH (24), is an unemployed resident of Taman Carina housing complex Block 41, Batu Aji. As a member of the KGR, led by Gigih Rahmat Dewa, LH is believed to have been involved in helping wanted terror suspect from Uighur, China, known as Dony, to remain in hiding. He also facilitated Indonesian citizens wishing to go to Syria. Besides, he aided two foreigners from Uighur to enter Batam and in receiving funds from the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) to fund
the duo. “Together with the KGR group members, he attended a drill using airsoft guns and airguns in preparations for leaving for Syria,” he added. LH is also believed to have participated in plotting to attack Marina Bay in Singapore. Earlier, Indonesias anti-terror Densus 88 squad, in cooperation with the Riau Islands police, had arrested six suspected terrorists in Batam on Friday (Aug 5). ELBEYLI - Turkey and its rebel allies opened a new line of attack in northern Syria on Saturday, as Turkish tanks rolled across the border and Syrian fighters swept in from the west to take villages held by Islamic State. The incursion was launched by Turkey from Kilis province - an area frequently targeted by Islamic State rockets - and coincided with a separate push by the Turkish-backed Syrian rebels, who seized several villages further to the east. By supporting the rebels, mainly Arabs and Turkmen fighting under the loose banner of the Free Syrian Army, Turkey is hoping to drive out Islamic State militants and check the advance of U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish fighters. The rebels last week took the frontier town of Jarablus with Turkish support. The operation, called Euphrates Shield, is Ankara’s first full-scale Syrian incursion since the start of the five-year-old war. On Saturday the tanks crossed the frontier and entered the Syrian rebelcontrolled town of al-Rai to support the
new offensive, a rebel spokesman and monitors said. Al-Rai is about 55 km (34 miles) west of Jarablus, and part of a 90-km corridor near the Turkish border that Ankara says it is clearing of jihadists and protecting from Kurdish militia expansion. The rebels then seized villages to the east and the south of al-Rai, according to one rebel official. “They took several villages, about eight villages. At first they took two and withdrew from them, but then reinforcements came and there was an advance,” Zakaria Malahifji of the Aleppo-based Fastaqim group told Reuters. Bamboo is processed accurately in order to produce crafts with high artistic value. “Quite a lot of foreign travelers like and order the bamboo crafts typically made at Tigawasa village. Lately, the demand for this bamboo craft is quite high of different models and designs,” he said, not long ago. He mentioned that typical woven bamboo crafts of Tigawasa village include tissue boxes, photo frames and the like. In order to introduce the distinctiveness of Bali, crafters combine the product with perforated coin and Balinese patterned yarns. The perforated coin is meant to indicate so that buyers know if the product is made by Balinese artisans. “Such unique model is widely on sale in the market and sell well because it offers Balinese
typical characteristics. Buyers purchase it for souvenir in their home country. They often order directly to the artisans or buy at some art shops,” he explained. Widarma has deeply involved in this bamboo handicraft business from 1999. At the beginning, he had difficulty in promoting the handicraft products due to lack of marketing agents. Over time, Widarma offers his products to a number art shops in Bali to help facilitate the marketing of the woven bamboo crafts. “Thankfully, within some years his order shows an increase. The delivery can reach 100 to 150 pieces per week or highly depends on the order of clients. The mostly desired craft products are tissue box containing combination of ornaments and variations with the price range of IDR 125,000 to IDR 150,000 per piece,” he said. He applies dye technique for the coloring. It is meant to give advantage to the handicraft products so that they are able to compete against the other products from outside the region. “We often participate in craft fairs in Jakarta and other regions in the country. We get quite positive response from the community of buyers regarding our products. The demand is high enough so that our craft stock is quickly sold out,” he concluded. (kmb34)

“If you are wishing to make Bali sustainable, be a farmer. But I want to be a smart farmer, know what the market wants,” said Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, in the interactive open house at the Wantilan Hall of the Bali House of Representatives, Saturday (Sep. 3). Farmers in particular, continued Pastika, has been often dissolved in suryak siu or bandwagon by planting a commodity widely cultivated by other people regardless the market demand. Eventually, the market becomes saturated and it causes the commodity prices to slump in the market. In addition, farmers never try to improve the quality of their agricultural products. Here, the role of the experts and scholars in agriculture is much needed for the advancement of agriculture in Bali. “So, now I will give you an example. Especially for the scholars of agriculture, it will mean nothing to learn the agricultural science
if you do not want to be farmers, right? Farming does not necessarily need a wide area. I also do farming at the office. Now, I do not need to buy banana. I’m getting bored of it because of having planted banana and so have the papaya, chili and eggplant. We are planting them alone,” he explained. Pastika added that agricultural experts and scholars should help find solutions if there are diseases or pests attacking the crops of farmers. Primarily, they help improve the quality of agricultural products so as to be more easily absorbed by the market. “For examples, the grapes of Seririt from my childhood until now remains sour. Where are the wine connoisseurs, please help make it sweet, durable and the like. So, we do not need to import wine and our farmers will go prosperous. Hopefully, the scholars could play their role, do not just talk. This is what I mean,” he explained. According to Pastika, when the
quality is good, the agricultural products will definitely be purchased. One of the buyers is hotel, which actually requires the supply of agricultural products every day. However, the agricultural products of Bali has only been slightly absorbed into the hotel industry due to the matter of poor quality and non-sustainable production. “Every day, hotels need papayas, tomatoes and oranges, can we supply them? Cianjur Restaurant, for instance, needs 500 kg of carp every day, but none is produced in Bali because we cannot raise it. The expert of fishery must try to do this. Chicken betutu of Men Tempeh at Gilimanuk needs nearly 1,000 heads of chicken each day and all of them are brought in East Java. Why? Because we do not want to raise chicken, why must young coconut leaf be purchased from outside the region? Because Balinese people do not want to climb, they are tired to climb. The wage is more expensive than the price of young coconut leaf. In short, this becomes a paradox, where we think A, and our lips say A, but perform B. He added that reclamation is not appropriate with Balinese cultural tourism. “Reclamation will change the face of Bali. We worry that Bali will no longer be attractive after the reclamation,” said the former Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University. On the other hand, continued Bendesa, the government has always hypothesized that if the Benoa Bay is successful it will benefit economically. In addition, there will be 200,000 more job opportunities to reduce unemployment and improve social welfare. In fact, there is no direct relationship between the reclamation and the
reduction of unemployment as well as poverty. “Working in tourism sector must comply with certain competency requirements while the poor and unemployment occur because of economic restrictions so that they are unable to continue their education pursuant to the qualifications required by the tourism sector,” he explained. According to Bendesa, the government should adhere to the spirit of tourism development in Bali namely cultural tourism based on Tri Hita Karana. In accordance with the Tri Hita Karana philosophy, the development in Bali should be based on the principle of balance and harmony. Balance in development can be realized by distributing investment in tourism sector from South Bali region to the other regions of Bali. Earlier, Deputy of Foreign Tourism Marketing Development, Ministry of Tourism, I Gde Pitana, said that the cultural tourism in Indonesia is enthused by 60 percent. It is much higher when compared to nature tourism enthused by as much as 35 percent and 5 percent
of artificial tourism. “For Bali, the latest data regarding the culture are approximately 63 percent. So, the cultural tourism becomes the main motivation, main attraction and main perception. After arriving in Bali, travelers may also visit the destination beyond the culture. It does not matter because in tourism there is no single motivation,” he said. According to Pitana, cultural tourism has been heavily criticized by many circles due to the fact, perception and observation that tourism is claimed to frequently damage culture. In many regions, the development of cultural tourism also makes local cultures marginalized. “We the government even consider that the criticism is not always true. Evidently, tourism even becomes a vehicle that can revitalize the culture itself. Tourism can also make the culture revived. In terms of the dance, for instance, where does appear more new creations whether in the tourist areas such as Bali or in the NTT having no tourism? I am sure the answer is in Bali,” he explained. VATICAN CITY - The canonisation of Mother Teresa of Calcutta marked the culmination of a process - sometimes called “the saint-making machine” - that is long, complex, expensive, opaque and often contentious. The Catholic Church posthumously confers sainthood on people considered so holy during their lives that they are now believed to be with God and can intercede with him to perform miracles. Such is the status of the nun acclaimed for her work in the slums of the Indian city now known as Kolkata, who Pope Francis on Sunday declared a saint in front of an estimated 120,000 pilgrims. were acclaimed saints upon their death. The current process, known as a “cause”, begins at the local level when a diocese believes that someone in their community lived a saintly life. When it is formally open, he or she get the title “Servant of God.” The postulator, in this case Canadian priest Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, sends voluminous documentation to the Vatican, where its Congregation for the Causes of Saints assigns it to a “relator”. The relator oversees it, and together with theologians, recommends if it is worthy enough to continue. If it does, the candidate gets the title “venerable”. The next step is
beatification. This requires a miracle, which is usually the inexplicable curing of a sick person. The first miracle attributed to Mother Teresa, and which allowed the Church to beatify her, concerned an Indian woman, Monica Bersa, whose stomach tumour is said to have disappeared after she and others prayed to the nun in 1998, a year after Mother Teresa died. A medical commission working with the Vatican reviews each case to decide if there is any known medical explanation for the healing.

One of the doctors who treated Bersa at the time, Ranjan Mustafi, told Indian media the healing was a result of treatment.
