A young, idealistic rebel from a desert planet seeks to fight an unjust, tyrannical emperor with a space station capable of destroying planets. “Star Wars” the 1977 film? Not quite. Try “The Star Wars,” the 1974 first draft by George Lucas that, ultimately, turned into the wildly popular film whose cultural resonance remains firmly rooted in popular culture. Now, starting Wednesday, Dark Horse Comics is bringing the original script to life as an eight-issue mini-series — with Lucas’ blessing — giving fans a different take on characters Darth Vader (no helmet), Luke Skywalker (he’s older and a general), Princess Leia, Han Solo (he’s green), C-3 PO and R2-D2 along with new ones like Anikinn Starkiller and his father, Kane. Series writer J.W. Rinzler, an executive editor at LucasBooks, called the se-
ries a “once in a lifetime project” and the chance to tell the first story in the “Star Wars” pantheon. “This is not something you could film,” Rinzler said of the original script and his adaptation of it. “Here’s a giant city and then here’s a giant vista filled with huge spacecraft. (Lucas) was doing his blue sky version of what he wanted to do. He knew this was not going to be filmable.” The story has its similarities to “Star Wars,” but the differences throughout “The Star Wars” are plentiful and noticeable, Rinzler said, and readers will notice many of them as they explore each page, some big, some small.
“It’s just great when the Jedi break out their lazerswords. Guess what? The storm troopers break out their lazerswords,” he said, noting that in this draft, there are no lightsabers and the Jedi are more akin to Errol Flynn-types than warrior monks. Artist Mike Mayhew likened the book to a cinematic-inspired vision of “The Magnificent Seven” because it’s a team-oriented story with “each character having a big stake and they’re all connected.” He also said his artwork, which goes into great detail in showing the characters, the ships, the worlds, gives a nod to conceptual artist Ralph McQuarrie, who created the original concept art for the initial film trilogy. Mayhew said there’s “so much more action, set creatures, such visual candy” in the mini-series.

LONDON — Here’s one mystery solved: Sophie Hannah is the crime writer given the formidable and most likely lucrative task of reviving Agatha Christie’s famed detective, Hercule Poirot, in a new novel announced Wednesday. The joint venture involving Hannah, HarperCollins publishers and the late Christie’s descendants means that Hannah will write the first family-authorized sequel to the works that made Christie the bestselling novelist in history, with more than 2 billion copies sold. When it comes out next year, the still untitled volume — set in the late 1920s — will be the first new Poirot story to appear since “Curtain” was published 39 years ago. Is the new author feeling the pressure of taking up where the world’s
most successful novelist left off? Hannah, with eight popular psychological thrillers to her name, claims to be only a little bit fearful. “The fear stroke adrenaline should help me to produce a better book,” said Hannah, who’s already written a 100-page plot summary complete with the twists and turns associated with Christie’s style. “I’m not scared. I’ve done a very detailed plan that’s been approved. He will certainly be the same Hercule Poirot that’s in all the novels. I’m not going to give him an interest in windsurfing or scuba diving. But different aspects of his personality may come out.” Hannah said she has been a disciple of Christie since her father gave her a dogeared copy of “The Body in the Library” when she was 12 or 13. “I read every word she’d written within a year and I’ve been in love with her work
ever since,” Hannah said. “The main thing is her obvious love of the story and her genius as a storyteller. In the writing, you can feel her relish in the story. She tells stories that are far more imaginative and suspenseful than anyone else.” Mathew Prichard, Christie’s grandson and chairman of Agatha Christie Ltd., said the decision to authorize a new “Poirot” tale was motivated in part by a belief that it would spur sales of Christie’s existing works, which include 80 crime novels and short story collections and 19 plays. “Like it or not, publishing thrives on big new titles,” he said. “Although Agatha Christie books have fared remarkably well despite this trend, our publishers said if we broke our rules and had a well-known modern author do something like this, the whole list would benefit.”

DENPASAR - Results of the feasibility study made by the LPPM team of the Udayana University stating the Benoa Bay reclamation infeasible is expected to become a reference for the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, to close and terminate the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and there must be no similar studies at the location. The Bali House also urged the governor to immediately revoke the study permit granted to PT TWBI. Do not let the governor even impose his will to provide the opportunity for another study and smooth the reclamation plan later on. “The results of feasibility study by the Udayana University declared it infeasible for reclamation, so the governor must not force his will.
There must be no other study. Therefore, the gubernatorial decree on the permit of the study should also be immediately revoked,” said a member of Commission III of the Bali House, Ida Bagus Putu Parta, and a member of Commission IV, Ketut Mandia, in Denpasar. Both Gus Parta and Mandia appreciated the Udayana University that had performed an objective, neutral
and independent study as well as did not side to the interests of investor but assessed it objectively in appropriate with the facts and the interest of Bali. “We appreciate the Udayana University that has reviewed objectively. By rights, the academicians of the Udayana University should act honestly. If it is not feasible for reclamation, say no. Do not say yes just because the study is the request of investor,” said Mandia. “Thank you for the Udayana University for the objective assessment and it’s able to protect Bali. I’m proud that Bali has the Udayana University, in the future the Udayana University should not get involved in selling Bali,” said Gus Parta.
He added the result of feasibility study by the Udayana University should be made a guideline and noticed by the Governor of Bali in making policies related to the reclamation plan so the results of the study were ruled out. On that account, he urged Governor Pastika to immediately revoke the decree of the Governor of Bali No.1727/01-B/Hk/2013 dated August 16 on the Permit of Feasibility Study on the Utilization, Development and Management Plan of Benoa Bay Waters granted to PT TWBI. Moreover, the revocation of recommendation of the Bali House No.660/14278/DPRD dated December 20, 2012 supported the executive to follow-up the study by
the LPPM of the Udayana University related to the making of buffer island against tsunami. “Results of the feasibility study by the Udayana University has declared infeasible for the reclamation at Benoa Bay because it belongs to a conservation area, the Recommendation of Bali House No.660 has also been revoked. Thus, it was no need for further studies related to the reclamation plan because the rules do not allow the reclamation at the location. Then, the Gubernatorial Decree No.1727 must be revoked if the governor genuinely has no intention to give an opportunity to investor to undertake the reclamation.

Landfill (TPA) at Peh, Kaliakah village, Negara, has now been completely overloaded. Even, the land of the ex-compost plant is forced to be annexed to accommodate the growing number of waste. Approximately, the land spreading across one hectare for landfill has now run out and the waste has piled up. As observation on Tuesday (Sep 3), the location of landfill next to the compost plant was not sufficient for the waste. To prevent the waste from spilling onto the road, any waste coming into to the landfill was piled on the other waste. Thus, it looked to mount. Meanwhile, the courtyard of the compost plant was once used to accommodate the waste. According to local residents, some time ago the waste had to be temporarily placed in the compost plant because the excavator used to remove was out of order. After the heavy equipment was back into operation, the waste was removed to the backyard of the plant. “Previously, the waste was temporarily placed in the plant yard because the landfill has been full. Now, the waste
has been cleaned up and shifted to the rear,” said one of the residents met at the location. Vacant land at the rear of the compost plant looked to have been full of waste. According to information, the area of the plant was actually used for the expansion of the landfill. However, considering the compost plant was more effective and did not require a lot of land, the onehectare land was eventually used for compost plant. In the implementation, production of the plant did not run properly. Finally, the plant was dormant to date. Then, the plant looked like a dead plant with rusty machines and did not work. Similarly, the cars, heavy equipment as well as the office building
managed by the regional enterprise (Perusda) were no longer in use. In the plant yard could be seen the remnants of waste after shifted to the back. Now, hundreds of cubic meters of waste piled up in the back yard of the ex-compost plant. Spokesperson of Jembrana government, Suherman, said the landfill at Peh, Kaliakah, could not indeed be expanded. Actually, there were plans to expand it, but could not due to getting hampered by new regulations. The initial solution was to optimize the existing waste disposals. Related to the ex-compost plant, despite belonging to Perusda, the assets remained to belong to local government. Therefore, it could be taken advantage to put waste in the area. (kmb26)
Four culprits of the villa burglary respectively with initials RM, AG, LO and AS were arrested by Criminal Detective Unit of the Northern Kuta Police on Monday (Sep 2). The four culprits were arrested after they were found burglarizing a villa inhabited by Maurizio from Italy on Jalan Merta Nadi Kerobokan, Northern Kuta. One of the culprits had a duel with the victim until they were finally arrested in turns. Previously, the four culprits from Kalimantan and Makassar, South Sulawesi, had targeted the victim’s villa around 7:00 p.m. They made surveillance by observing the movements of the victim. Incidentally, the victim went out of the villa due to an interest. “The victim went out of the villa. Well, it was the right time for them to get into the villa area. Even, two culprits had entered the villa, while the other two were at the entrance,” the source told last Tuesday. Apparently, the culprits estimated the victim left the villa for long time. However, their prediction missed and only within a few minutes the victim arrived back. How surprised the victim was when seeing two strangers at the entrance. When seeing the victim, the two culprits ran away. “The victim rushed into the villa. Inside, he was more surprised when seeing two other culprits,” he said. The source having the name unpublished in the paper explained that when seeing both strangers, the victim tried to fight back. One of the culprits could be held by the victim, while another could escape. Well, at that time the victim and the culprit (with initials RM—Ed) fought in the villa. Incidentally, there were people passing around and the victim cried for help, then the people gave a help. “At the same time, police officer also passed,” he said. With the help of residents and police, RB could be captured. Subsequently, he was taken to Northern Kuta Police station for interrogation. Based on confession of RM, the existence of the other three culprits could be found at 8:00 p.m. at an inn in Kuta. Ultimately they could be arrested and had been detained in Northern Kuta Police. “We are still investigating the case. Appearance of the tourist resorts in Gianyar with the operation of beggars drew the attention of the Gianyar Public Order Officers. Moreover, some international events will be held in Bali. Gianyar as a tourist destination does not want if its image will be tarnished by the presence of beggars in the tourist region. On Tuesday (Aug 3), a total of 26 beggars were disciplined through the operation of the Gianyar Public Order Officer. Moreover, the presence of beggars in Ubud tourist resort was often complained by visitors. They often forced tourists to give alms. Those beggars dominated by women and children were directly taken to the office of the Public Order Officer to be given training before handed over to Social Services and repatriated to their home village. The Head of the Gianyar Public Order Officer, Gde Daging, said the beggars were arrested around the Ubud tourist resort. The operation was performed based on complaints of residents and tourists because they were considered to have been disturbing the comfort. Dozens of beggars arrested were mostly from Pedahan and Munti Gunung, Karangasem. Even, they were frequent beggars that previously had even been arrested. Based on data of the beggar disciplined, the presence of beggars this year from January to July increased in number. From six times of inspection, it had been captured 149 beggars. Meanwhile, the inspection made in 2012 could arrest 157 beggars in 11 times of inspection. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DETROIT (AP) — As cars become more like PCs on wheels, what’s to stop a hacker from taking over yours? In recent demonstrations, hackers have shown they can slam a car’s brakes at freeway speeds, jerk the steering wheel and even shut down the engine — all from their laptop computers. The hackers are publicizing their work to reveal vulnerabilities present in a growing number of car computers. All cars and trucks contain anywhere from 20 to 70 computers. They control everything from the brakes to acceleration to the windows, and are connected to an internal network. A few hackers have recently managed to find their way into these intricate networks. In one case, a pair of hackers manipulated two cars by plugging a laptop into a port beneath the dashboard where mechanics connect their computers to search for problems. Scarier yet, another group took control of a car’s computers through cellular telephone and Bluetooth connections, the compact disc player and even the tire pressure monitoring system. To be sure, the “hackers” involved were well-intentioned computer security experts, and it took both groups months to break into the computers. And there have been no real-world cases of a hacker remotely taking over a car. But experts say high-tech hijackings will get easier as automakers give them full Internet access and add computer-controlled safety devices that take over driving duties, such as braking or steering, in emergencies. Another possibility: A tech-savvy thief could unlock the doors and drive off with your vehicle. “The more technology they add to the vehicle, the more opportunities there are for that to be abused for nefarious purposes,” says Rich Mogull, CEO of Phoenix-based Securosis, a security research firm. “Anything with a computer chip in it is vulnerable, history keeps showing us.” In the last 25 years, automakers have gradually computerized functions such as steering, braking, accelerating and shifting. Electronic gas pedal position sensors, for instance, are more reliable than the old throttle cables. Electronic parts also reduce weight and help cars use less gasoline. The networks of little computers inside today’s cars are fertile ground for hackers. Charlie Miller, a St. Louis-based security engineer for Twitter, and fellow hacker Chris Valasek, director of intelligence at a Pittsburgh computer security consulting firm, maneuvered their way into the computer systems of a 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Ford Escape through a port used by mechanics. “We could control steering, braking, acceleration to a certain extent, seat belts, lights, horn, speedometer, gas gauge,” said Valasek. The two used a federal grant to expose the vulnerability of car computers. Even with their expertise, it took them nine months to get in.

Experts: Don’t bomb chemical weapon sites in Syria Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON — You simply can’t safely bomb a chemical weapon storehouse into oblivion, experts say. That’s why they say the United States is probably targeting something other than Syria’s nerve agents. But now there is concern that bombing other sites could accidentally release dangerous chemical weapons that the U.S. military didn’t know were there because they’ve lost track of some of the suspected nerve agents. Bombing stockpiles of chemical weapons — purposely or accidentally — would likely kill nearby civilians in an accidental nerve agent release, create a long-lasting environmental catastrophe or both, five experts told The Associated Press. That’s because under ideal conditions — and conditions wouldn’t be ideal in Syria — explosives would leave at least 20 to 30 percent of the poison in lethal form. “If you drop a conventional munition on a storage facility containing unknown chemical agents — and we don’t know exactly what is where in the Syrian arsenal — some of those agents will be neutralized and some will be spread,” said Daryl Kim-
ball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, a nonprofit that focuses on all types of weaponry. “You are not going to destroy all of them.” “It’s a classic case of the cure being worse than the disease,” Kimball said. He said some of the suspected storage sites are in or near major Syrian cities like Damascus, Homs and Hama. Those cities have a combined population of well over 2 million people. When asked if there is any way to ensure complete destruction of the nerve agents without going in with soldiers, seizing the chemicals and burning them in a special processing plant, Ralf Trapp, a French chemical weapons consultant and longtime expert in the field, said simply: “Not really.” Trapp said to incinerate the chemicals properly, temperatures have to get as hot as 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. Experts also say weather factors —
especially wind and heat — even time of day, what chemicals are stored, how much of it is around and how strong the building is all are factors in what kind of inadvertent damage could come from a bombing. There is one precedent for bombing a chemical weapons storehouse. In 1991, during the first Persian Gulf War, the U.S. bombed Bunker 13 in Al Muthanna, Iraq. Officials figured it contained 2,500 artillery rockets filled with sarin, the same nerve gas suspected in Syria. More than two decades later the site is so contaminated no one goes near it even now. That bunker is a special problem for inspectors because “an entry into the bunker would expose personnel to explosive, chemical and physical hazards,” says a 2012 report by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which implements the international chemical weapons convention.
“We hope the event can have a positive impact on Bali’s tourism revenue,” said Chief of Bali Provincial Tourism Sub-official Ida Bagus Kade Subikshu here on Wednesday. He said several improvements have been made in terms of accommodation, food, and transportation. Besides, 130 Miss World contestants who visit a number of tourism sites on the island also become a free promotion for Bali’s tourism sector. All the beautiful and talented contestants are scheduled to visit Tanah Lot in Tabanan, Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) in Jimbaran, Bali Safari in Gianyar, and Pura Besakih of Karangasem. Subikshu said the committee has coordinated with local government, including temple officers and villagers, for the contestants’ visit to Pura Besakih. “The temple will be one of the tremendous attractions for the contestants. They will wear polite clothes relating to the local tradition when coming to the temple, “ he said. The contestants will follow quarantine period in Bali until September 14, 2013. The final competition will be held in Bogor of W Java Province on September 28, 2013. Subikshu expected the international event can contribute to the short and long term of the tourism development in Bali which known as a barometer for Indonesia tourism. As an impact, the employers agreed not to do production for three days on September 9 to September 11. “As per the circular of the Central Executive of the Indonesia Tempeh and Tofu Producers Association Cooperative (Gakoptindo), we will threaten to make a national strike as an effort to demand the government to stabilize the price of soybean. This activity will certainly affect the availability of tempeh in the market,” said Chairman of the Indonesia Tempeh and Tofu Entrepreneur Cooperative (KOPTI) of Bali, Haji Sutrisno, when contacted in Denpasar, Tuesday (Sep 3). Further, he said the strike was an attempt of the tofu and tempeh makers so that the government was willing to hear their three demands, namely immediately reducing and stabilizing the price of soybean, realizing soybean self-sufficiency and implementing the Presidential Decree No.32/2013 on the assignment to the Logistic Agency (Bulog) to secure the price and distribution of soybean. “At least, when the Logistic Agency handles the procurement of soybeans, the supply of this commodity in the market will be constantly secure and has stable prices,” he explained. He said that his party had been working with local Logistic Agency to procure the soybean ingredient for tofu and tempeh employers in this region. However, the Logistic Agency could not import soybeans because it remained to wait for the permit from the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Admittedly, the procurement of soybeans, including the imports, had been handled by private sector, so the price met the dollar exchange rate. “All this time, 85 percent of soybean necessity as the ingredient for making tofu in Bali depends on the import, while only 15 percent is supplied by local product,” he explained. When contacted in a separate place, the Chief of Logistic Agency for Bali Regional Division, Gede Rempiana, said his agency was ready to cooperate with Kopti Bali, especially in the procurement of soybean according to the required needs. However, described Rempiana, his party was still waiting for the import. “We are still waiting for the import because the Logistic Agency physically has no stock. When the import is coming, we will be able to make sure if the soybean need can be met according to the needs. In essence, the central office has had an MOU with the Gakoptindo for soybean need,” he explained. Related to soybean import, the Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali recognized the import supply of the soybean commodity could still be met. In other words, there was no scarcity. “Although the price of soybean import commodity surges higher due to the influence of the rising exchange rate of dollar, the supply does not face scarcity,” he said. Residents of Kubu, especially farmers and cattle raisers, like at Juntal Kaja, Kubu, habitually sell their cow ahead of dry season and water crisis. It aims to reduce the number of cattle, so as not to burden because the price of water is expensive. One of the local farmers, Ni Gede Putu, said in Karangasem on Tuesday (Sep 3) that since last August she and the people in her village began to face clean water crisis. It happened because the water basin for holding rainwater supply was dry. Some other basin did not contain water and broke because of the heat of the sun, so the concrete water basin leaked and could no longer be used. She admitted to have sold a cow. Similarly, it was not hers, but was obtained from sharecropping, where
she took care of the cow and she got a sharing profit in return. Besides, she also confessed to have raised the cow by sharecropping for two years, and the profits she got after deducted with the price of calf was IDR 2.5 million. Thus, the profit was divided into two with the cow owner. Another told that local residents at Kubu sold their cow every year. Adult cattle were sold ahead of dry season to avoid cows from becoming thin due to crisis of drinking water and fodder was

And as Obama seeks to cobble together an international coalition to back his plans for military intervention, France was Wednesday to hold an emergency parliamentary debate on the Syrian crisis. Putin, in an interview apparently aimed at presenting a more
pragmatic face to the world ahead of the G20 summit in Saint Petersburg, said he did not exclude Russia agreeing to US-led military strikes if it was proven Syria’s regime had carried out the August 21 attack. But, he told state-run Channel One television, the West still needed to put forward watertight proof of the circumstances of the attack, which some Russian officials have blamed on rebels. If there was clear proof of what weapons were used and who used them, Russia “will be ready to act
in the most decisive and serious way,” Putin said. Asked whether Russia would agree with US-led military strikes if it was proven that the Syrian regime had carried out the attack, Putin replied: “I do not exclude that.” But he said it would be unacceptable for the West to go ahead with military action against the regime of Bashar al-Assad without the assent of the UN Security Council, where Russia has veto-wielding permanent membership. BEIRUT - As the Obama administration tries to prod Congress into backing armed action against Syria, the regime in Damascus is hiding military hardware and shifting troops out of bases into civilian areas. Politically, President Bashar Assad has gone on the offensive, warning in a rare interview with Western media that any military action against Syria could spark a regional war. If the U.S. undertakes missile
strikes, Assad’s reaction could have a major effect on the trajectory of Syria’s civil war. Neighboring countries could get dragged into a wider conflict, or it could be back to business as usual for a crisis that has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people over 2½ years. The main Western-backed opposition group says that during the buildup last week to what seemed like an imminent U.S. attack, the army moved troops as well as rocket launchers, artillery and other heavy
weapons into residential neighborhoods in cities nationwide. Three Damascus residents, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, confirmed such movements. One man said two members of the elite Republican Guards broke into an empty house he owns and showed him an official document stating they were authorized to do so because Syria is at war. This is the natural thing to do.”

NEW YORK CITY - A slimmed-down Kodak announced Tuesday that it had emerged from bankruptcy protection and would specialize in technology focused on imaging for businesses. Kodak, during the 20-month bankruptcy reorganization, divested many of its most iconic businesses, including its retail film products, its photography paper products and some 105,000 kiosks worldwide. The assets went to the UK Kodak Pension Plan, its largest creditor. “We have emerged as a technology company serving imaging for business markets -- including packaging, functional printing, graphic communications and professional services,” said Kodak chief executive Antonio Perez in a statement. “We are setting a trajectory for profitable growth,” Perez said. “We have the right technology at the right time as printing markets increasingly transition to digital.”
A New York bankruptcy court had approved Kodak’s reorganization plan on August 20, but the company said at the time it still had some final steps before exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Kodak said Tuesday it had completed the spinoff of assets to the UK Kodak Pension Plan, closed an agreement for $695 million in financing and obtained $406 million in new equity investments from unsecured creditors. Kodak filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors in January 2012, after 131 years in business, as the company fell behind rivals in digital photography. The Rochester, New York-based company, started in 1892, led the way in popularizing the cameras, film, slide projectors and home videos that preserved the memories of generations of Americans and others around the world. Kodak was among the early developers of digital imaging, but lost ground to rivals as the company failed to adapt its business lines.

GIANYAR - A white tiger of the Panthera Tigris species was born at the Bali Zoo in Gianyar, Bali Province, bringing the total count of Bengal Tigers owned by the nine-hectarewide zoo to 16. Spokesperson for Bali Zoo Emma Kristiana Chandra said here on Wednesday that the white tiger cub is the eighth generation of female white tiger Kartini (10 years) and male Bengala tiger Buntung (9.5 years). The white tiger cub, named O’ne, was born last week under normal confinement conditions and weighs 1.8 kilograms. The tiger cub weighs 2.9 kilograms and is 60 centimenters long. “The baby is healthy and growing well. He is being fed his mother’s milk. The mother has been placed in a control cage so she can receive intensive care from a vet,” Chandra said. While she is lactating, the mother tiger’s daily diet will be enhanced for more nutrition, with the addition of vitamins and an extra kilogram of chicken meat. “The zoo is very attentive to the animals and has been making efforts to meet the requirements of attending to the animals’ welfare,” Chandra stated, adding that the birth of the Bengala tiger was proof of the zoo’s commitment to preserving the endangered species.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The man who held three women captive in his home for nearly a decade before one escaped and alerted authorities has been found dead and is believed to have committed suicide, a prison official said. Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, located south of Columbus in central Ohio, JoEllen Smith, Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman, said early Wednesday. Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 10:50 p.m. He was in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes, but was not on suicide watch, Smith said. She said suicide watch entails constant observation. Castro was also watched closely in Cuyahoga County Jail in the several weeks after his arrest and before his case was resolved by a guilty plea, with logs noting his activity every 10 minutes. He was taken off county jail suicide watch in early June after authorities determined he was not a suicide risk. Castro’s attorneys tried unsuccessfully to have a psychological examination of Castro done at the Cuyahoga County Jail, where Castro was housed before he was turned over to state authorities following his conviction, his attorney, Jaye Schlachet, told The Associated Press early Wednesday. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s finance minister has called on the US Federal Reserve to provide more clarity about when it will wind down its stimulus programme, in an interview published Wednesday. Southeast Asia’s biggest economy and other emerging markets have been hit by huge outflows of foreign cash since May when the Fed first signalled it may taper off the $85 billion a month bondbuying programme. Finance Minister Chatib Basri told the Financial Times newspaper there was a lack of “transparency about the process” as the US central bank moves towards reducing the stimulus. “People are guessing that the Fed will do the tapering in September. But we’re not very sure,” the minister added, stressing it was hard for Jakarta to formulate policy given the uncertainty. His comments came ahead of a
G20 summit in Russia this week, where the deteriorating economic fortunes of emerging markets are expected to figure prominently. The Fed’s easy money policy fuelled an investment spree in developing countries as investors looked for better returns, but the capital flows have now started to dry up as the US economy shows signs of strengthening. And among countries to suffer the most are those with big current account deficits, such as Indonesia. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s anti-corruption court jailed the country’s former traffic police chief for 10 years on Tuesday after he built up an $18 million empire by accepting enormous bribes. The sentencing of Djoko Susilo brings to an end a dramatic case that has captivated Indonesia, and is a major victory for anti-graft investigators battling against the odds in one of the world’s most corrupt countries. Susilo reportedly earned a humble police salary of $1,000 a month -- but the country’s anti-graft agency seized assets from him, including houses, cars and even petrol kiosks, worth 200 billion rupiah (around $18 million). After taking several hours to read the 3,000page indictment against Susilo, a five-judge panel unanimously found him guilty of corruption and money laundering. “It was clear to the panel he had committed acts of corruption,” said Judge Anwar, who goes by one name, as the sentence was handed down after the verdict was announced.
Susilo was also ordered to pay a fine of 500 million rupiah ($45,000) at the end of the lengthy trial, which started in April. Prosecutors had sought an 18-year jail term and a one-billion-rupiah fine. The case began with the discovery that a tender for driving simulators in 2011 had been rigged, with Susilo accused of syphoning off 32 billion rupiah from the failed project. Police initially sought to protect Susilo by refusing to let the anti-graft commission, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), handle the case. But they were finally forced to hand the case over -- and the anti-corruption agency quickly discovered a vast empire built on the back of corrupt payments. The KPK has been granted extraordinary powers to investigate the rich and powerful in Indonesia, ranked 118th most corrupt country in the world in a 176-nation index compiled by Transparency International. The commission has helped put senior officials and powerful businesspeople behind bars, in the process winning the fervent support of ordinary Indonesians, many of whom live in grinding poverty.

was just lying to me straight out.” Gibley was in Venice on Tuesday for the premiere of his film “The Armstrong Lie,” in which he salvaged the 2009 footage meant for a comeback movie and added interviews with Armstrong after the stunning disclosure.
Gibley said that Armstrong “to some extent, is always a curator of his own myth and his own story” and once he realized that people no longer idolize him the same way “I think he wanted to spin it.” Still, Gibley maintains that Armstrong “was more honest” in the later interviews.

LONDON - The world’s richest football league is getting even richer, although the wealth of English clubs is also benefiting teams overseas. In less than three months during the European transfer window, more than $2.3 billion was spent by clubs in the continent’s top five leagues - with a third of that shipped by Premier League sides overseas, according to an analysis by accountancy firm Deloitte. Such spending might seem at odds with the economic hardships being experienced by many fans, but the transfer window splurges are not slowing down. Even though there are relatively new Financial Fair Play regulations in European football, the days of the big-money moves are not over. “If a price of a player is high or not high, I think this is the market and we cannot intervene in this market,” FIFA President Sepp Blatter said Tuesday. “It is definitely a European market.” In less than three months, 490 million pounds ($760 million) of the 630 million pounds ($980 million) paid out by English sides landed in bank accounts abroad - up 60 percent year-on-year. The record spending spree, though, was in part the result of Tottenham generating 100 million euros ($132 million) by selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in a world-record deal. Even though Spaniards have been in recession for much of the past four years, they turned out in their thousands on Monday to laud the arrival of a player reportedly being paid around 350,000 euros ($461,000) a week. The head of world football can see how incongruous that looks. “You say the country is a poor country or indebted, but in football you always find money,” Blatter said. “If a player is the value of that (100 million euros), I doubt, I doubt, but I cannot stop this. Gareth Bale, he can prove now that he is better than (Cristiano) Ronaldo.” With the European transfer window shut, FIFA said Tuesday that there’s been a total of 10,454 player transfers globally so far this year, worth a total of $3.367 billion - a 29 percent year-on-year increase. From those deals agents have earned $169 million - 20 percent more than the previous year. Spain and England have been the busiest business partners, with Spanish clubs selling 38 players worth $227 million to their English counterparts, according to FIFA. That helped Spain’s topflight clubs make an overall transfer profit in the summer of 110 million euros ($145 million). Italian sides had a 12 million-euro ($16-million) surplus. Financial planning wasn’t so astute elsewhere. Net spending by Premier League clubs was 400 million pounds ($622 million), while the figure was 150 million euros ($198 million) in France, and 60 million
euros ($79 million) in Germany The spending power of England’s topflight clubs has been strengthened by new television deals that are generating more than $8.5 billion over the next three years. “Testament to the impact (the TV revenue) is having is in the scale of Premier League gross spending, as well as the gulf in net spending between the Premier League and other European leagues,” said Alex Thorpe from Deloitte’s sports division. “Whereas many clubs around Europe have been reliant on selling players in order to spend, the financial advantages Premier League clubs enjoy have enabled net spending of 400 million pounds across the league.” Around 140 million pounds ($218 million) was shelled out by Premier League clubs on the frantic final day on the transfer window, with Arsenal scrambling to break its transfer record to bring Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a club record 50 million euros ($66 million). Deadline-day can create a frenzy, with champion Manchester United managing to squeeze just one notable deal over the line - Marouane Fellaini joined from Everton for 27.5 million pounds ($43 million) - despite months pursuing talent across Europe. Such spending might seem at odds with the economic hardships being experienced by many fans, but the transfer window splurges are not slowing down. Even though there are relatively new Financial Fair Play regulations in European football, the days of the big-money moves are not over. “If a price of a player is high or not high, I think this is the market and we cannot intervene in this market,” FIFA President Sepp Blatter said Tuesday. “It is definitely a European market.” In less than three months, 490 million pounds ($760 million) of the 630 million pounds ($980 million) paid out by English sides landed in bank accounts abroad - up 60 percent year-on-year. was just lying to me straight out.” Gibley was in Venice on Tuesday for the premiere of his film “The Armstrong Lie,” in which he salvaged the 2009 footage meant for a comeback movie and added interviews with Armstrong after the stunning disclosure.
Gibley said that Armstrong “to some extent, is always a curator of his own myth and his own story” and once he realized that people no longer idolize him the same way “I think he wanted to spin it.” Still, Gibley maintains that Armstrong “was more honest” in the later interviews.

Ohio man who held 3 women captive commits suicide Associated Press Writer
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The man who held three women captive in his home for nearly a decade before one escaped and alerted authorities has been found dead and is believed to have committed suicide, a prison official said. Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, located south of Columbus in central Ohio, JoEllen Smith, Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman, said early Wednesday. Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 10:50 p.m. He was in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes, but was not on suicide watch, Smith said. She said suicide watch entails constant observation. Castro was also watched closely in Cuyahoga County Jail in the several weeks after his arrest and before his case was resolved by a guilty plea, with logs noting his activity every 10 minutes. He was taken off county jail suicide watch in early June after authorities determined he was not a suicide risk. Castro’s attorneys tried unsuccessfully to have a psychological examination of Castro done at the Cuyahoga County Jail, where Castro was housed before he was turned over to state authorities following his conviction, his attorney, Jaye Schlachet, told The Associated Press early Wednesday. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s finance minister has called on the US Federal Reserve to provide more clarity about when it will wind down its stimulus programme, in an interview published Wednesday. Southeast Asia’s biggest economy and other emerging markets have been hit by huge outflows of foreign cash since May when the Fed first signalled it may taper off the $85 billion a month bondbuying programme. Finance Minister Chatib Basri told the Financial Times newspaper there was a lack of “transparency about the process” as the US central bank moves towards reducing the stimulus. “People are guessing that the Fed will do the tapering in September. But we’re not very sure,” the minister added, stressing it was hard for Jakarta to formulate policy given the uncertainty. His comments came ahead of a
G20 summit in Russia this week, where the deteriorating economic fortunes of emerging markets are expected to figure prominently. The Fed’s easy money policy fuelled an investment spree in developing countries as investors looked for better returns, but the capital flows have now started to dry up as the US economy shows signs of strengthening. And among countries to suffer the most are those with big current account deficits, such as Indonesia. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s anti-corruption court jailed the country’s former traffic police chief for 10 years on Tuesday after he built up an $18 million empire by accepting enormous bribes. The sentencing of Djoko Susilo brings to an end a dramatic case that has captivated Indonesia, and is a major victory for anti-graft investigators battling against the odds in one of the world’s most corrupt countries. Susilo reportedly earned a humble police salary of $1,000 a month -- but the country’s anti-graft agency seized assets from him, including houses, cars and even petrol kiosks, worth 200 billion rupiah (around $18 million). After taking several hours to read the 3,000page indictment against Susilo, a five-judge panel unanimously found him guilty of corruption and money laundering. “It was clear to the panel he had committed acts of corruption,” said Judge Anwar, who goes by one name, as the sentence was handed down after the verdict was announced.
Susilo was also ordered to pay a fine of 500 million rupiah ($45,000) at the end of the lengthy trial, which started in April. Prosecutors had sought an 18-year jail term and a one-billion-rupiah fine. The case began with the discovery that a tender for driving simulators in 2011 had been rigged, with Susilo accused of syphoning off 32 billion rupiah from the failed project. Police initially sought to protect Susilo by refusing to let the anti-graft commission, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), handle the case. But they were finally forced to hand the case over -- and the anti-corruption agency quickly discovered a vast empire built on the back of corrupt payments. The KPK has been granted extraordinary powers to investigate the rich and powerful in Indonesia, ranked 118th most corrupt country in the world in a 176-nation index compiled by Transparency International. The commission has helped put senior officials and powerful businesspeople behind bars, in the process winning the fervent support of ordinary Indonesians, many of whom live in grinding poverty.

BEIJING - China’s trade with Southeast Asia could more than double to $1 trillion by 2020, Premier Li Keqiang told regional leaders, downplaying simmering territorial disputes and stressing their “common destiny”, state media reported Wednesday. Li called for an upgraded version of the free trade deal between the two sides and insisted that “disruptive factors” should not get in the way of regional cooperation, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Trade has grown sixfold over the past decade to $400 billion in 2012 between China and the 10member Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN), it said. But Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea -- believed to sit atop vast deposits of oil and natural gas -- even waters close to the coasts of its neighbours, and has been increasingly assertive over the issue in recent years. Li downplayed the disputes while addressing the 10th ChinaASEAN Expo and business and investment summit in the southern city of Nanning, reiterating Chinese calls for dialogue. “We have also noticed that there exist some disruptive factors in the region that are against stability and development, but they are not mainstream,” he said according to a transcript of his speech carried by Xinhua. “The Chinese side maintains that the South China Sea disputes are not an issue between China and the ASEAN, and they should not and will not affect the overall China-ASEAN cooperation.” “China’s new government will... more firmly and effectively build a community of common destiny to share peace and prosperity,” he said, adding that China and ASEAN “have the power to create a ‘diamond decade’ in the future”. NEW YORK CITY - A slimmed-down Kodak announced Tuesday that it had emerged from bankruptcy protection and would specialize in technology focused on imaging for businesses. Kodak, during the 20-month bankruptcy reorganization, divested many of its most iconic businesses, including its retail film products, its photography paper products and some 105,000 kiosks worldwide. The assets went to the UK Kodak Pension Plan, its largest creditor. “We have emerged as a technology company serving imaging for business markets -- including packaging, functional printing, graphic communications and professional services,” said Kodak chief executive Antonio Perez in a statement. “We are setting a trajectory for profitable growth,” Perez said. “We have the right technology at the right time as printing markets increasingly transition to digital.”
A New York bankruptcy court had approved Kodak’s reorganization plan on August 20, but the company said at the time it still had some final steps before exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Kodak said Tuesday it had completed the spinoff of assets to the UK Kodak Pension Plan, closed an agreement for $695 million in financing and obtained $406 million in new equity investments from unsecured creditors. Kodak filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors in January 2012, after 131 years in business, as the company fell behind rivals in digital photography. The Rochester, New York-based company, started in 1892, led the way in popularizing the cameras, film, slide projectors and home videos that preserved the memories of generations of Americans and others around the world. Kodak was among the early developers of digital imaging, but lost ground to rivals as the company failed to adapt its business lines.

GIANYAR - A white tiger of the Panthera Tigris species was born at the Bali Zoo in Gianyar, Bali Province, bringing the total count of Bengal Tigers owned by the nine-hectarewide zoo to 16. Spokesperson for Bali Zoo Emma Kristiana Chandra said here on Wednesday that the white tiger cub is the eighth generation of female white tiger Kartini (10 years) and male Bengala tiger Buntung (9.5 years). The white tiger cub, named O’ne, was born last week under normal confinement conditions and weighs 1.8 kilograms. The tiger cub weighs 2.9 kilograms and is 60 centimenters long. “The baby is healthy and growing well. He is being fed his mother’s milk. The mother has been placed in a control cage so she can receive intensive care from a vet,” Chandra said. While she is lactating, the mother tiger’s daily diet will be enhanced for more nutrition, with the addition of vitamins and an extra kilogram of chicken meat. “The zoo is very attentive to the animals and has been making efforts to meet the requirements of attending to the animals’ welfare,” Chandra stated, adding that the birth of the Bengala tiger was proof of the zoo’s commitment to preserving the endangered species.

As an impact, the employers agreed not to do production for three days on September 9 to September 11. “As per the circular of the Central Executive of the Indonesia Tempeh and Tofu Producers Association Cooperative (Gakoptindo), we will threaten to make a national strike as an effort to demand the government to stabilize the price of soybean. Further, he said the strike was an attempt of the tofu and tempeh makers so that the government was willing to hear their three demands, namely immediately reducing and stabilizing the price of soybean, realizing soybean self-sufficiency and implementing the Presidential Decree No.32/2013 on the assignment to the Logistic Agency (Bulog) to secure the price and distribution of soybean. “At least, when the Logistic Agency handles the procurement of soybeans, the supply of this commodity in the market will be constantly secure and has stable prices,” he explained. He said that his party had been working with local Logistic Agency to procure the soybean ingredient for tofu and tempeh employers in this region. However, the Logistic Agency could not import soybeans because it remained to wait for the permit from the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Admittedly, the procurement of soybeans, including the imports, had been handled by private sector, so the price met the dollar exchange rate. “All this time, 85 percent of soybean necessity as the ingredient for making tofu in Bali depends on the import, while only 15 percent is supplied by local product,” he explained. When contacted in a separate place, the Chief of Logistic Agency for Bali Regional Division, Gede Rempiana, said his agency was ready to cooperate with Kopti Bali, especially in the procurement of soybean according to the required needs. However, described Rempiana, his party was still waiting for the import. “We are still waiting for the import because the Logistic Agency physically has no stock. When the import is coming, we will be able to make sure if the soybean need can be met according to the needs. One of the local farmers, Ni Gede Putu, said in Karangasem on Tuesday (Sep 3) that since last August she and the people in her village began to face clean water crisis. It happened because the water basin for holding rainwater supply was dry. Some other basin did not contain water and broke because of the heat of the sun, so the concrete water basin leaked and could no longer be used. She admitted to have sold a cow. Similarly, it was not hers, but was obtained from sharecropping, where
she took care of the cow and she got a sharing profit in return. Besides, she also confessed to have raised the cow by sharecropping for two years, and the profits she got after deducted with the price of calf was IDR 2.5 million. Thus, the profit was divided into two with the cow owner. Another told that local residents at Kubu sold their cow every year. pragmatic face to the world ahead of the G20 summit in Saint Petersburg, said he did not exclude Russia agreeing to US-led military strikes if it was proven Syria’s regime had carried out the August 21 attack. But, he told state-run Channel One television, the West still needed to put forward watertight proof of the circumstances of the attack, which some Russian officials have blamed on rebels. If there was clear proof of what weapons were used and who used them, Russia “will be ready to act
in the most decisive and serious way,” Putin said. Asked whether Russia would agree with US-led military strikes if it was proven that the Syrian regime had carried out the attack, Putin replied: “I do not exclude that.” But he said it would be unacceptable for the West to go ahead with military action against the regime of Bashar al-Assad without the assent of the UN Security Council, where Russia has veto-wielding permanent membership. China’s trade with Southeast Asia could more than double to $1 trillion by 2020, Premier Li Keqiang told regional leaders, downplaying simmering territorial disputes and stressing their “common destiny”, state media reported Wednesday. Li called for an upgraded version of the free trade deal between the two sides and insisted that “disruptive factors” should not get in the way of regional cooperation, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Trade has grown sixfold over the past decade to $400 billion in 2012 between China and the 10member Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN), it said. But Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea -- believed to sit atop vast deposits of oil and natural gas -- even waters close to the coasts of its neighbours, and has been increasingly assertive over the issue in recent years. Li downplayed the disputes while addressing the 10th ChinaASEAN Expo and business and investment summit in the southern city of Nanning, reiterating Chinese calls for dialogue. “We have also noticed that

DETROIT (AP) — As cars become more like PCs on wheels, what’s to stop a hacker from taking over yours? In recent demonstrations, hackers have shown they can slam a car’s brakes at freeway speeds, jerk the steering wheel and even shut down the engine — all from their laptop computers. The hackers are publicizing their work to reveal vulnerabilities present in a growing number of car computers. All cars and trucks contain anywhere from 20 to 70 computers. They control everything from the brakes to acceleration to the windows, and are connected to an internal network. A few hackers have recently managed to find their way into these intricate networks. In one case, a pair of hackers manipulated two cars by plugging a laptop into a port beneath the dashboard where mechanics connect their computers to search for problems. Scarier yet, another group took control of a car’s computers through cellular telephone and Bluetooth connections, the compact disc player and even the tire pressure monitoring system. To be sure, the “hackers” involved were well-intentioned computer security experts, and it took both groups months to break into the computers. And there have been no real-world cases of a hacker remotely taking over a car. But experts say high-tech hijackings will get easier as automakers give them full Internet access and add computer-controlled safety devices that take over driving duties, such as braking or steering, in emergencies. Another possibility: A tech-savvy thief could unlock the doors and drive off with your vehicle. “The more technology they add to the vehicle, the more opportunities there are for that to be abused for nefarious purposes,” says Rich Mogull, CEO of Phoenix-based Securosis, a security research firm. “Anything with a computer chip in it is vulnerable, history keeps showing us.” In the last 25 years, automakers have gradually computerized functions such as steering, braking, accelerating and shifting. Electronic gas pedal position sensors, for instance, are more reliable than the old throttle cables. Electronic parts also reduce weight and help cars use less gasoline. The networks of little computers inside today’s cars are fertile ground for hackers. Charlie Miller, a St. Louis-based security engineer for Twitter, and fellow hacker Chris Valasek, director of intelligence at a Pittsburgh computer security consulting firm, maneuvered their way into the computer systems of a 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Ford Escape through a port used by mechanics. “We could control steering, braking, acceleration to a certain extent, seat belts, lights, horn, speedometer, gas gauge,” said Valasek. The two used a federal grant to expose the vulnerability of car computers. Even with their expertise, it took them nine months to get in.

Experts: Don’t bomb chemical weapon sites in Syria Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON — You simply can’t safely bomb a chemical weapon storehouse into oblivion, experts say. That’s why they say the United States is probably targeting something other than Syria’s nerve agents. But now there is concern that bombing other sites could accidentally release dangerous chemical weapons that the U.S. military didn’t know were there because they’ve lost track of some of the suspected nerve agents. Bombing stockpiles of chemical weapons — purposely or accidentally — would likely kill nearby civilians in an accidental nerve agent release, create a long-lasting environmental catastrophe or both, five experts told The Associated Press. That’s because under ideal conditions — and conditions wouldn’t be ideal in Syria — explosives would leave at least 20 to 30 percent of the poison in lethal form. “If you drop a conventional munition on a storage facility containing unknown chemical agents — and we don’t know exactly what is where in the Syrian arsenal — some of those agents will be neutralized and some will be spread,” said Daryl Kim-
ball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, a nonprofit that focuses on all types of weaponry. “You are not going to destroy all of them.” “It’s a classic case of the cure being worse than the disease,” Kimball said. He said some of the suspected storage sites are in or near major Syrian cities like Damascus, Homs and Hama. Those cities have a combined population of well over 2 million people. When asked if there is any way to ensure complete destruction of the nerve agents without going in with soldiers, seizing the chemicals and burning them in a special processing plant, Ralf Trapp, a French chemical weapons consultant and longtime expert in the field, said simply: “Not really.” Trapp said to incinerate the chemicals properly, temperatures have to get as hot as 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. Experts also say weather factors —
especially wind and heat — even time of day, what chemicals are stored, how much of it is around and how strong the building is all are factors in what kind of inadvertent damage could come from a bombing. There is one precedent for bombing a chemical weapons storehouse. In 1991, during the first Persian Gulf War, the U.S. bombed Bunker 13 in Al Muthanna, Iraq. Officials figured it contained 2,500 artillery rockets filled with sarin, the same nerve gas suspected in Syria. More than two decades later the site is so contaminated no one goes near it even now. That bunker is a special problem for inspectors because “an entry into the bunker would expose personnel to explosive, chemical and physical hazards,” says a 2012 report by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which implements the international chemical weapons convention.
“We hope the event can have a positive impact on Bali’s tourism revenue,” said Chief of Bali Provincial Tourism Sub-official Ida Bagus Kade Subikshu here on Wednesday. He said several improvements have been made in terms of accommodation, food, and transportation. Besides, 130 Miss World contestants who visit a number of tourism sites on the island also become a free promotion for Bali’s tourism sector. This event will also bring financial benefit to Bali and so why it must be made into a problem, he said. “What is wrong with Miss World. They will also promote Bali. They will also follow customs and respect cultural traditions in Bali. They will respect ethics, customs and traditions effective in Bali,” he said. He said the event would not bring any losses for Bali as well as Indonesia but on the other hand it would even bring much benefit for Bali and Indonesia.“For Bali it would become free promotion. Landfill (TPA) at Peh, Kaliakah village, Negara, has now been completely overloaded. Even, the land of the ex-compost plant is forced to be annexed to accommodate the growing number of waste. Approximately, the land spreading across one hectare for landfill has now run out and the waste has piled up. As observation on Tuesday (Sep 3), the location of landfill next to the compost plant was not sufficient for the waste. To prevent the waste from spilling onto the road, any waste coming into to the landfill was piled on the other waste. Thus, it looked to mount. Meanwhile, the courtyard of the compost plant was once used to accommodate the waste. According to local residents, some time ago the waste had to be temporarily placed in the compost plant because the excavator used to remove was out of order. After the heavy equipment was back into operation, the waste was removed to the backyard of the plant. “Previously, the waste was temporarily placed in the plant yard because the landfill has been full. Now, the waste
has been cleaned up and shifted to the rear,” said one of the residents met at the location. Vacant land at the rear of the compost plant looked to have been full of waste. According to information, the area of the plant was actually used for the expansion of the landfill. However, considering the compost plant was more effective and did not require a lot of land, the onehectare land was eventually used for compost plant. In the implementation, production of the plant did not run properly. Finally, the plant was dormant to date. Then, the plant looked like a dead plant with rusty machines and did not work. Similarly, the cars, heavy equipment as well as the office building
managed by the regional enterprise (Perusda) were no longer in use. In the plant yard could be seen the remnants of waste after shifted to the back. Now, hundreds of cubic meters of waste piled up in the back yard of the ex-compost plant. Spokesperson of Jembrana government, Suherman, said the landfill at Peh, Kaliakah, could not indeed be expanded. Actually, there were plans to expand it, but could not due to getting hampered by new regulations. The initial solution was to optimize the existing waste disposals. Related to the ex-compost plant, despite belonging to Perusda, the assets remained to belong to local government. Therefore, it could be taken advantage to put waste in the area. (kmb26)
Four culprits of the villa burglary respectively with initials RM, AG, LO and AS were arrested by Criminal Detective Unit of the Northern Kuta Police on Monday (Sep 2). The four culprits were arrested after they were found burglarizing a villa inhabited by Maurizio from Italy on Jalan Merta Nadi Kerobokan, Northern Kuta. One of the culprits had a duel with the victim until they were finally arrested in turns. Previously, the four culprits from Kalimantan and Makassar, South Sulawesi, had targeted the victim’s villa around 7:00 p.m. They made surveillance by observing the movements of the victim. Incidentally, the victim went out of the villa due to an interest. “The victim went out of the villa. Well, it was the right time for them to get into the villa area. Even, two culprits had entered the villa, while the other two were at the entrance,” the source told last Tuesday. Apparently, the culprits estimated the victim left the villa for long time. However, their prediction missed and only within a few minutes the victim arrived back. How surprised the victim was when seeing two strangers at the entrance. When seeing the victim, the two culprits ran away. “The victim rushed into the villa. Inside, he was more surprised when seeing two other culprits,” he said. The source having the name unpublished in the paper explained that when seeing both strangers, the victim tried to fight back. One of the culprits could be held by the victim, while another could escape. Well, at that time the victim and the culprit (with initials RM—Ed) fought in the villa. Incidentally, there were people passing around and the victim cried for help, then the people gave a help. “At the same time, police officer also passed,” he said. With the help of residents and police, RB could be captured. Subsequently, he was taken to Northern Kuta Police station for interrogation. Based on confession of RM, the existence of the other three culprits could be found at 8:00 p.m. at an inn in Kuta. Ultimately they could be arrested and had been detained in Northern Kuta Police. “We are still investigating the case. Appearance of the tourist resorts in Gianyar with the operation of beggars drew the attention of the Gianyar Public Order Officers. Moreover, some international events will be held in Bali. Gianyar as a tourist destination does not want if its image will be tarnished by the presence of beggars in the tourist region. On Tuesday (Aug 3), a total of 26 beggars were disciplined through the operation of the Gianyar Public Order Officer. Moreover, the presence of beggars in Ubud tourist resort was often complained by visitors. They often forced tourists to give alms. Those beggars dominated by women and children were directly taken to the office of the Public Order Officer to be given training before handed over to Social Services and repatriated to their home village. The Head of the Gianyar Public Order Officer, Gde Daging, said the beggars were arrested around the Ubud tourist resort. The operation was performed based on complaints of residents and tourists because they were considered to have been disturbing the comfort. Dozens of beggars arrested were mostly from Pedahan and Munti Gunung, Karangasem. Even, they were frequent beggars that previously had even been arrested. Based on data of the beggar disciplined, the presence of beggars this year from January to July increased in number. From six times of inspection, it had been captured 149 beggars. Meanwhile, the inspection made in 2012 could arrest 157 beggars in 11 times of inspection. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

A young, idealistic rebel from a desert planet seeks to fight an unjust, tyrannical emperor with a space station capable of destroying planets. “Star Wars” the 1977 film? Not quite. Try “The Star Wars,” the 1974 first draft by George Lucas that, ultimately, turned into the wildly popular film whose cultural resonance remains firmly rooted in popular culture. Now, starting Wednesday, Dark Horse Comics is bringing the original script to life as an eight-issue mini-series — with Lucas’ blessing — giving fans a different take on characters Darth Vader (no helmet), Luke Skywalker (he’s older and a general), Princess Leia, Han Solo (he’s green), C-3 PO and R2-D2 along with new ones like Anikinn Starkiller and his father, Kane. Series writer J.W. Rinzler, an executive editor at LucasBooks, called the se-
ries a “once in a lifetime project” and the chance to tell the first story in the “Star Wars” pantheon. “This is not something you could film,” Rinzler said of the original script and his adaptation of it. “Here’s a giant city and then here’s a giant vista filled with huge spacecraft. (Lucas) was doing his blue sky version of what he wanted to do. He knew this was not going to be filmable.” The story has its similarities to “Star Wars,” but the differences throughout “The Star Wars” are plentiful and noticeable, Rinzler said, and readers will notice many of them as they explore each page, some big, some small.
“It’s just great when the Jedi break out their lazerswords. Guess what? The storm troopers break out their lazerswords,” he said, noting that in this draft, there are no lightsabers and the Jedi are more akin to Errol Flynn-types than warrior monks. Artist Mike Mayhew likened the book to a cinematic-inspired vision of “The Magnificent Seven” because it’s a team-oriented story with “each character having a big stake and they’re all connected.” He also said his artwork, which goes into great detail in showing the characters, the ships, the worlds, gives a nod to conceptual artist Ralph McQuarrie, who created the original concept art for the initial film trilogy. Mayhew said there’s “so much more action, set creatures, such visual candy” in the mini-series.

LONDON — Here’s one mystery solved: Sophie Hannah is the crime writer given the formidable and most likely lucrative task of reviving Agatha Christie’s famed detective, Hercule Poirot, in a new novel announced Wednesday. The joint venture involving Hannah, HarperCollins publishers and the late Christie’s descendants means that Hannah will write the first family-authorized sequel to the works that made Christie the bestselling novelist in history, with more than 2 billion copies sold. When it comes out next year, the still untitled volume — set in the late 1920s — will be the first new Poirot story to appear since “Curtain” was published 39 years ago. Is the new author feeling the pressure of taking up where the world’s
most successful novelist left off? Hannah, with eight popular psychological thrillers to her name, claims to be only a little bit fearful. “The fear stroke adrenaline should help me to produce a better book,” said Hannah, who’s already written a 100-page plot summary complete with the twists and turns associated with Christie’s style. “I’m not scared. I’ve done a very detailed plan that’s been approved. He will certainly be the same Hercule Poirot that’s in all the novels. I’m not going to give him an interest in windsurfing or scuba diving. But different aspects of his personality may come out.” Hannah said she has been a disciple of Christie since her father gave her a dogeared copy of “The Body in the Library” when she was 12 or 13. “I read every word she’d written within a year and I’ve been in love with her work
ever since,” Hannah said. “The main thing is her obvious love of the story and her genius as a storyteller. In the writing, you can feel her relish in the story. She tells stories that are far more imaginative and suspenseful than anyone else.” Mathew Prichard, Christie’s grandson and chairman of Agatha Christie Ltd., said the decision to authorize a new “Poirot” tale was motivated in part by a belief that it would spur sales of Christie’s existing works, which include 80 crime novels and short story collections and 19 plays. “Like it or not, publishing thrives on big new titles,” he said. “Although Agatha Christie books have fared remarkably well despite this trend, our publishers said if we broke our rules and had a well-known modern author do something like this, the whole list would benefit.”

DENPASAR - Results of the feasibility study made by the LPPM team of the Udayana University stating the Benoa Bay reclamation infeasible is expected to become a reference for the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, to close and terminate the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and there must be no similar studies at the location. The Bali House also urged the governor to immediately revoke the study permit granted to PT TWBI. Do not let the governor even impose his will to provide the opportunity for another study and smooth the reclamation plan later on. “The results of feasibility study by the Udayana University declared it infeasible for reclamation, so the governor must not force his will.
There must be no other study. Therefore, the gubernatorial decree on the permit of the study should also be immediately revoked,” said a member of Commission III of the Bali House, Ida Bagus Putu Parta, and a member of Commission IV, Ketut Mandia, in Denpasar. Both Gus Parta and Mandia appreciated the Udayana University that had performed an objective, neutral
and independent study as well as did not side to the interests of investor but assessed it objectively in appropriate with the facts and the interest of Bali. “We appreciate the Udayana University that has reviewed objectively. By rights, the academicians of the Udayana University should act honestly. If it is not feasible for reclamation, say no. Do not say yes just because the study is the request of investor,” said Mandia. “Thank you for the Udayana University for the objective assessment and it’s able to protect Bali. I’m proud that Bali has the Udayana University, in the future the Udayana University should not get involved in selling Bali,” said Gus Parta.
He added the result of feasibility study by the Udayana University should be made a guideline and noticed by the Governor of Bali in making policies related to the reclamation plan so the results of the study were ruled out. On that account, he urged Governor Pastika to immediately revoke the decree of the Governor of Bali No.1727/01-B/Hk/2013 dated August 16 on the Permit of Feasibility Study on the Utilization, Development and Management Plan of Benoa Bay Waters granted to PT TWBI. Moreover, the revocation of recommendation of the Bali House No.660/14278/DPRD dated December 20, 2012 supported the executive to follow-up the study by
the LPPM of the Udayana University related to the making of buffer island against tsunami. “Results of the feasibility study by the Udayana University has declared infeasible for the reclamation at Benoa Bay because it belongs to a conservation area, the Recommendation of Bali House No.660 has also been revoked. Thus, it was no need for further studies related to the reclamation plan because the rules do not allow the reclamation at the location. Then, the Gubernatorial Decree No.1727 must be revoked if the governor genuinely has no intention to give an opportunity to investor to undertake the reclamation.
