LONDON — Jude Law feels his work options are widening as he gets older, and he revels in the complications. The 41-year-old British actor — best known for his roles in “The Talented Mr Ripley,” ‘’Cold Mountain” and more recently “Sherlock Holmes” — says there is now “less emphasis on playing romantic leads.” “You get over a certain age, and you’re more complicated anyway,” he said in an interview. “So, I guess characters written for that age are more complicated, you know.” Law said he likes to take risks by picking roles that terrify him, such as his much-acclaimed stint in “Henry V” in London’s West End last year. “There’s this moment when you haven’t quite learnt your lines, the play doesn’t feel like it’s coming together or at least you don’t feel that you’ve fully understood the role or indeed the piece yet and everyone’s looking around for a way out, an excuse,” he said, recalling the rehearsal period.

LOS ANGELES — “Guardians of the Galaxy” blasted past expectations at the weekend box office. Marvel Studios’ cosmic romp starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista as members of an intergalactic band of rebels earned $94 million in its debut weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Ahead of its Friday debut, box office analysts initially projected that the comic book adaptation would earn between $60 million and $75 million in North America. The out-of-this-world launch gives “Guardians” the biggest opening for a film released in the traditionally low-key month of August, a record previously held by the $69.2 million debut of 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum.” It also makes “Guardians” the third largest opening of 2014, coming behind the $95 million inauguration of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in April and the $100 million launch of “Transformers: Age of Extinction” in June. “Guardians,” which also features Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel voicing the computer-generated characters Rocket Raccoon and Groot, was originally considered a risky proposition for Marvel and “Guardians” distributor Walt Disney Co. because it features more obscure characters from the Marvel universe and is set almost entirely in outer space. Despite any apprehension, Marvel was betting on “Guardians,” written and directed by “Slither” filmmaker James Gunn, to be a blockbuster. The studio announced at Comic-Con in San Diego last month that a sequel is already set for release in 2017. Marvel’s next films are the follow-up “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Ant-Man” starring Paul

This regulation explicitly governs the distribution of modern retail. Article 22 (point 1 and 2) expressly requires shopping malls and modern stores to sell commodities of domestic products of at least 80 percent of all the existing products. A board of the Association of
Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs (HIPMI) of Bali Chapter, Gede Semadi, said that his party emphatically agreed to the regulation. Moreover, Bali had many local products that were competitive in foreign markets. “As a good resident, we should love local products by buying domestic products,” said
Semadi. Yet, he said that it was something reasonable if there was a rejection especially by modern stores predominantly importing goods. He said that any decision would surely draw pros and cons. “It just needs to find out the best solution in order to get a majority of local products,” he said. Does it have something to do with the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2015? “Indonesia has been an open country from the New Order era. I think that on entering the AEC it will remain the same,” said this successful
businessman. On that account, he hoped the rules should be emphasized, while the employers should not be spoiled and just waited for the government to enforce the rules. A great businessman, he pointed out, should be ready to compete and survive in any condition. “In my opinion, the AEC will not significantly influence us. For instance, the AEC will free labor to work in ASEAN countries. In Indonesia, it has long happened. Actually the AEC just legalizes the practices which have been running for a long time,” he said.
Similar statement was delivered by Agus Mulyawan, a business consultant. He agreed to the regulations made to protect local products. In addition, local products should remain nurtured and empowered so as to be able to compete at the AEC 2015 as well as in the domestic market. “AEC 2015 is aiming to create the ASEAN into a single market and production base unity will be a challenge, considering the population of Indonesia, especially Bali will certainly become a destination market for the products of other ASEAN countries,” he said. BANGLI - Condition of Singamandawa Market in Kintamani seems to get very minimal attention from local government. Apparently this largest traditional market in Kintamani is let be uncontrolled and without clear arrangement. As evidence, though many stalls are still vacant inside the market, a number of traders are allowed to sell on sidewalk at edge of highway. Based on observation on Sunday (Aug 3), condition of the market located east of the highway was really chaotic. More traders preferred to sell in front of the market even though they should peddle their goods on sidewalk. Inevitably such condition triggered chaos. Moreover, the market had not adequate parking facilities. When asked for his confirmation regarding the matter, the subdistrict head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, acknowledged the problems existing at Singamandawa Market was quite complex. He said that many traders preferred to sell in the front of the market because the market was not open every day but periodically on particular days. In addition, not all the
stalls in the market were occupied. According to him, to arrange the market was needed the data collection and sustainable supervision by local Revenue Service in cooperation with the management of local market. Capacity of the market and the number of traders needed to be reviewed. According to Dirgayusa, all this time the management of the market did not have accurate data on the number of traders and market capacity. “There are no definitive data whether so far the traders at the market exceed the capacity or many spaces are not occupied,” he said. In addition, to facilitate the public to find out stuff needed, it was required data collection and re-arrangement in the matter of the category of goods. By that way, traders selling similar commodities could be placed at the same complex. He admitted that all this time his party only made an approach to traders and appealed to sell in the market area. Meanwhile, the authorities to govern the arrangement of the market lay in the relevant agency, namely the Industry and Trade Agency. (ina)
SINGARAJA - The entry of investors establishing villas at certain villages in Buleleng has not given a positive impact on local villages. Rural authorities seem to get losses only rather than benefits where they expect to get revenue from this sector. Instead of hoping to gain revenue for the village, when the village authority asks for voluntary donation, the villa owners, mostly foreign nationals, are very rarely willing to participate by setting aside their business profits. At least, this condition is experienced by almost all rural authorities whose territory is established with villa by foreigners running the business in Buleleng. One of them is Bukti village, Kubutambahan subdistrict. Since the past few years, many foreigners have built villas along the coastline of Bukti village. Interestingly, virtually all the land areas built with villas have the status as free-state land, but having been transformed into private ownership and built with villas by foreigners. Headman of Bukti, Kubutambahan subdistrict, Gede Wardana,
when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Aug 3) said that his village actually intended to get revenue from the villas built by the foreigners. However, in fact it was very difficult for him to make it into one of the revenue sources for the village. It was not only caused by the fact that rural authorities had not yet owned a legal basis to collect revenue from the villas, but local government also still had a trouble to ensnare the villa business so as they could donate the business profit for the region. “We have not been able to get revenue from the villas, whereas the villas are operated commercially. Other than we do not have a legal basis, the county government still seems difficult to get any income from the villa sector,” he said. On the other hand, Wardana
hoped that villages would not become ‘spectators’ with the rise of villa businesses. To that end, his party attempted so that many local residents could be absorbed as employees at the villas built by foreigners. So far, foreigners who built villas at the village had employed local residents, but the number was relatively small. Therefore, his party would make a more intensive approach to foreigners having the villas so that more and more local residents could be employed at the villas. “We think the approach to villa owners will help that more local residents can be employed at the villas. Thus, we will not become spectators, but can be engaged directly and get additional income for family,” he said. (kmb38)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

In the same period last year, Bali’s exports of silver ornaments were worth only US$3.11 million, the provincial industry and trade office said. The export volume, however, declined 21.70 percent from 10.19 units to 7.98 million units of various types of silver ornaments, data at the office showed. Silver ornaments, mainly from the area of Celuk in the regency of Gianyar, contributed 2.5 percent to Bali’s total export earning of US$215.04 million in the five months period. Ni Wayan Suma, a silverware craft man in Celuk said silver ornament from Celuk had been exported mainly to Singapore and

It was released Thursday by the journal Cell. It might also help doctors analyze biopsy samples from people someday, she said. The see-through technique involves pumping a series of chemicals through blood vessels, as well as other passages in the brain and spinal cord. Some chemicals form a mesh to hold tissue in place. Others wash out the fats that make tissue block light. It takes about a week to create a transparent mouse, Gradinaru said. The researchers have also made transparent rats, which take about two weeks, she said. Scientists can use stains to highlight anatomical details like the locations of active genes.

Such condition, for instance, can be seen in the forest area located right in front of the office of the East Bali Forest Management Unit (KPH) and office of the Kintamani subdistrict head. Based on observation, the forest area in the west of Kintamani highway was stuffed with a lot of rubbish. Other than organic waste, inorganic waste such as plastic was also widely strewn in the forest. A large pile of rubbish in the forest indirectly indicated if the waste disposal in the forest had gone on long enough. Ironically, location of the forest stuffed with a lot of rubbish was directly across the office of the East Bali Forest Management Unit and Kintamani subdistrict head. When asked for his confirmation, the subdistrict head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, did not dismiss such condition. He acknowledged the forest located right in front of his office had been stuffed with a lot of rubbish. MANGUPURA - Hundreds of applications for death benefit assistance in Badung are still unable to be disbursed. From a total of 1,261 applications coming up to July, only 1,148 applications could have been disbursed. “From the data at hand, approximately 113 applications still cannot be disbursed,” said the Head of Badung Population and Civil Registry Office, Nyoman Soka, Sunday (Aug 3). He said the applications having not been disbursed were still in process. His party also asked the applicant community to be patient. Moreover, the current disbursement process of the death benefits had a number of different mechanisms from the previous years. The most fundamental difference was the requirement of each applicant to have a bank account number. Then, the government would transfer the fund to the bank account.

LABWEH, Lebanon — Thousands of Lebanese civilians and Syrian refugees crammed in cars and pickup trucks fled Monday from a border town overrun by militants from neighboring Syria as more Lebanese soldiers died in the fighting. The exodus came as an army statement claimed progress in the campaign and said the Syrian militants who captured the eastern town of Arsal had killed “a number of residents who refused to obey (their) orders.” The army also sent reinforcements to the area. The clashes are the most serious spillover of violence from Syria’s civil war into Lebanon, compounding fears that tiny Lebanon is fast becoming a new front in its neighbor’s conflict, now in its third year. The three-day fighting in Arsal, a predominantly Sunni town surrounded by Shiite villages, could worsen already-brewing sectarian tensions in Lebanon. The army has vowed to expel the militants from the town — an ambitious task considering the porous nature of the Syria-Lebanese border and the political and sectarian divisions within Lebanon. So far, at least 11 Lebanese troops have been killed and 13 soldiers are missing in the Arsal clashes, which erupted Saturday after Syrian militants made a cross-border raid and overran army positions in the area. Monday’s army statement reported “a number of martyrs” while a Lebanese security official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the number of soldiers killed had risen to 16. Residents fleeing Arsal said they made use of a relative lull between midnight and Monday morning to pack up and leave. Heavy fighting then erupted and black smoke could be seen billowing over the town, which the Lebanese army sealed off to media. Cracks of heavy gunfire and the thud of shells could be heard from a distance as tanks pounded rebel positions in and around Arsal. A dozen Lebanese army flatbed trucks were seen carrying tanks toward the outskirts of Arsal on Monday. Among those fleeing was Aziza Rayed, in her 60s, who said her family was going to the nearby border town of Qaa. “We are leaving to take these children to a safer place,” she said, her children and grandchildren in the back of a pickup truck. Syrian refugees who had earlier fled the war at home for Arsal’s safety were among those fleeing Monday. One of them, Fatmeh Meshref from the Syrian central city of Homs, said she and her husband and five children were terrified. “Our children were screaming and we had no place to hide,” she said.
KUNMING, China — Rescuers dug through shattered homes Monday looking for survivors of a strong earthquake in southern China’s Yunnan province as the death toll rose to at least 398 people, with more than 1,800 injured. About 12,000 homes collapsed when the quake struck Sunday afternoon in impoverished Ludian county, around 370 kilometers (230 miles) northeast of Yunnan’s capital, Kunming, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported. Ma Yaoqi, an 18-year-old volunteer in the quake zone, said by phone that at least half of the buildings had collapsed on the road from the city center of Zhaotong to the hardest hit town of Longtou. The rest of the buildings were damaged, she said. “I saw dead bodies being wrapped in quilts and carried away,” said Ma, who had arrived with 20 other volunteers Monday. “Some were wrapped with small quilts. Those must be kids.” Overhead footage of the quake zone shot by state broadcaster CCTV showed older houses flattened but newer multistory buildings still standing. The magnitude-6.1 quake struck at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. China’s earthquake monitoring agency put the magnitude at 6.5. The mountainous region where the quake occurred is largely agricultural, with farming and mining the top industries, and is prone to earthquakes. Relief efforts are underway, with more than 2,500 troops dispatched to the disaster region, Xinhua said.

AMBON - At least nine people were killed in a communal clash between the residents of Iha and Luhu villages, West Seram, Maluku Province, on Monday. “A report received from the West Seram Police said that the clash resulted in the death of five Luhu and four Iha residents,” Maluku Police’s spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner, Hassan Mukadar, stated on Monday. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s trade balance swung to a slim deficit in June as imports of food and clothes rose ahead of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and Eid holiday, official data showed Monday. The deficit in Southeast Asia’s top economy came in at $305 million, compared to a slim surplus of $70 million the previous month, according to the data from the national statistics agency. People in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation typically splash out on expensive food to break the fasting during Ramadan, and on lavish clothes to wear to celebrate Eid. Imports rose to $15.72 billion, up by 0.54 percent from a year earlier.
The trade balance was hit at the start of the year by a controversial ban on the export of some unprocessed mineral ores introduced in January, plunging to a deficit of almost $2 billion in April. However exports picked up in June, rising 4.5 percent on year, as shipments of refined mineral products increased, helping to offset the increase in imports. “There has been a shift from raw mineral to refined mineral exports which led
to an increase in exports,” said agency chief Suryamin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. BALTIMORE — Sitting on the deck at his beloved Meadowbrook, Michael Phelps glances toward the pool where he was once afraid to put his face in the water. “This is me,” he said, a slight smile curling off his lips. “This is home.” This is where Phelps put in most of the work to become the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. This is where he’s looking to add to that legacy after an aborted retirement, his eyes firmly on the Rio Games two years away. And as the world’s greatest swimmer takes his comeback to it’s the biggest stop yet, this week’s U.S. national championships in Irvine, California, it’s important for him to remember where he came from. Why? Because for all the hoopla over LeBron James returning to Cleveland, there’s no bigger homebody than Phelps. He still trains at the pool where he learned to swim, a nondescript building in Baltimore’s inner suburbs, right in the middle of the Jones Falls flood
plain. Drive past the shuttered ice rink with weeds growing up at the edges and there it is, a rectangular cube of gray concrete blocks. Inside, kids do cannonballs off the side of the pool, teenagers sun on the faux beach with umbrellas stuck in the sand, geriatrics glide slowly through the water looking to ward off the advancing years. In the middle of this scene out of Anywhere USA, there’s Phelps and his star-studded training group, an impressive collection of gold medalists, world champions and national record holders. “It’s funny,” said his longtime coach, Bob Bowman. “When I come out here and see kids playing around, that’s just what Michael did every day when he was a little kid. When I first met him, he was just playing around in the pool, playing games with his friends.” As they wrapped up preparations for the national championships, Phelps and Bowman shared an exclusive look at what goes on behind the scenes with The Associated Press.

In the women’s final, sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia beat Kurumi Nara of Japan 6-3 4-6 6-4 in a match that stretched over two hours. Kuznetsova broke Nara’s serve five times but was broken herself on three occasions.

Tavecchio gave a radio interview later on Sunday in which he said he suffered more than Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated American President John F. Kennedy in 1963. “John Kennedy’s assassin didn’t have to suffer what I have suffered over the last few days,” Tavecchio told RAI radio. “And to think that these last few days mark 30 years since I started my work in Africa, where I have helped to build and open a hospital.” The election to

BALTIMORE — Sitting on the deck at his beloved Meadowbrook, Michael Phelps glances toward the pool where he was once afraid to put his face in the water. “This is me,” he said, a slight smile curling off his lips. “This is home.” This is where Phelps put in most of the work to become the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. This is where he’s looking to add to that legacy after an aborted retirement, his eyes firmly on the Rio Games two years away. And as the world’s greatest swimmer takes his comeback to it’s the biggest stop yet, this week’s U.S. national championships in Irvine, California, it’s important for him to remember where he came from. Why? Because for all the hoopla over LeBron James returning to Cleveland, there’s no bigger homebody than Phelps. He still trains at the pool where he learned to swim, a nondescript building in Baltimore’s inner suburbs, right in the middle of the Jones Falls flood
plain. Drive past the shuttered ice rink with weeds growing up at the edges and there it is, a rectangular cube of gray concrete blocks. Inside, kids do cannonballs off the side of the pool, teenagers sun on the faux beach with umbrellas stuck in the sand, geriatrics glide slowly through the water looking to ward off the advancing years. In the middle of this scene out of Anywhere USA, there’s Phelps and his star-studded training group, an impressive collection of gold medalists, world champions and national record holders. “It’s funny,” said his longtime coach, Bob Bowman. “When I come out here and see kids playing around, that’s just what Michael did every day when he was a little kid. When I first met him, he was just playing around in the pool, playing games with his friends.” As they wrapped up preparations for the national championships, Phelps and Bowman shared an exclusive look at what goes on behind the scenes with The Associated Press.

Next up for both players is a home game or sorts, the Rogers Cup starting in Toronto on Monday. In the women’s final, sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia beat Kurumi Nara of Japan 6-3 4-6 6-4 in a match that stretched over two hours. Kuznetsova broke Nara’s serve five times but was broken herself on three occasions.

LABWEH, Lebanon — Thousands of Lebanese civilians and Syrian refugees crammed in cars and pickup trucks fled Monday from a border town overrun by militants from neighboring Syria as more Lebanese soldiers died in the fighting. The exodus came as an army statement claimed progress in the campaign and said the Syrian militants who captured the eastern town of Arsal had killed “a number of residents who refused to obey (their) orders.” The army also sent reinforcements to the area. The clashes are the most serious spillover of violence from Syria’s civil war into Lebanon, compounding fears that tiny Lebanon is fast becoming a new front in its neighbor’s conflict, now in its third year. The three-day fighting in Arsal, a predominantly Sunni town surrounded by Shiite villages, could worsen already-brewing sectarian tensions in Lebanon. The army has vowed to expel the militants from the town — an ambitious task considering the porous nature of the Syria-Lebanese border and the political and sectarian divisions within Lebanon. So far, at least 11 Lebanese troops have been killed and 13 soldiers are missing in the Arsal clashes, which erupted Saturday after Syrian militants made a cross-border raid and overran army positions in the area. Monday’s army statement reported “a number of martyrs” while a Lebanese security official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the number of soldiers killed had risen to 16. Residents fleeing Arsal said they made use of a relative lull between midnight and Monday morning to pack up and leave. Heavy fighting then erupted and black smoke could be seen billowing over the town, which the Lebanese army sealed off to media. Cracks of heavy gunfire and the thud of shells could be heard from a distance as tanks pounded rebel positions in and around Arsal. A dozen Lebanese army flatbed trucks were seen carrying tanks toward the outskirts of Arsal on Monday. Among those fleeing was Aziza Rayed, in her 60s, who said her family was going to the nearby border town of Qaa. “We are leaving to take these children to a safer place,” she said, her children and grandchildren in the back of a pickup truck. Syrian refugees who had earlier fled the war at home for Arsal’s safety were among those fleeing Monday. One of them, Fatmeh Meshref from the Syrian central city of Homs, said she and her husband and five children were terrified. “Our children were screaming and we had no place to hide,” she said.
KUNMING, China — Rescuers dug through shattered homes Monday looking for survivors of a strong earthquake in southern China’s Yunnan province as the death toll rose to at least 398 people, with more than 1,800 injured. About 12,000 homes collapsed when the quake struck Sunday afternoon in impoverished Ludian county, around 370 kilometers (230 miles) northeast of Yunnan’s capital, Kunming, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported. Ma Yaoqi, an 18-year-old volunteer in the quake zone, said by phone that at least half of the buildings had collapsed on the road from the city center of Zhaotong to the hardest hit town of Longtou. The rest of the buildings were damaged, she said. “I saw dead bodies being wrapped in quilts and carried away,” said Ma, who had arrived with 20 other volunteers Monday. “Some were wrapped with small quilts. Those must be kids.” Overhead footage of the quake zone shot by state broadcaster CCTV showed older houses flattened but newer multistory buildings still standing. The magnitude-6.1 quake struck at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. China’s earthquake monitoring agency put the magnitude at 6.5. Rain and thunderstorms were forecast for the area Monday afternoon, complicating efforts to bring tents, water, food and other relief supplies to survivors. Roads had caved in,
and rescuers were forced to travel on foot. Repeated aftershocks also were making the rescue work dangerous. The USGS showed four aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 and higher hitting after the initial quake. The Yunnan Civil Affairs Bureau said on its website that 398 people were killed and 1,801 injured. Another 29,400 people were evacuated, CCTV said. The death toll is expected to rise after rescuers reach remote communities to assess casualties. Many of the homes that collapsed in Ludian, which has a population of about 429,000, were old and made of brick, Xinhua said, adding that electricity and telecommunications were cut off in the county. The mountainous region where the quake occurred is largely agricultural, with farming and mining the top industries, and is prone to earthquakes. Relief efforts are underway, with more than 2,500 troops dispatched to the disaster region, Xinhua said.
The Red Cross Society of China allocated quilts, jackets and tents for those made homeless by the quake, while Red Cross branches in Hong Kong, Macau and neighboring Sichuan province also sent relief supplies. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang reached the worst-hit area Monday afternoon to oversee quake relief, Xinhua said. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon offered “his condolences to the Chinese Government and the families of those killed,” according to a statement from his office. MANGUPURA - Hundreds of applications for death benefit assistance in Badung are still unable to be disbursed. From a total of 1,261 applications coming up to July, only 1,148 applications could have been disbursed. “From the data at hand, approximately 113 applications still cannot be disbursed,” said the Head of Badung Population and Civil Registry Office, Nyoman Soka, Sunday (Aug 3). He said the applications having not been disbursed were still in process. His party also asked the applicant community to be patient. Moreover, the current disbursement process of the death benefits had a number of different mechanisms from the previous years. The most fundamental difference was the requirement of each applicant to have a bank account number. Then, the government would transfer the fund to the bank account.
He explained the disbursement through the bank account was still not understood by most small communities. Therefore, his party continued to disseminate to the public regarding the benefits and procedures of disbursing the death benefit. Soka revealed that to obtain the death benefit was not really complicated provided that all the requirements had been complied with. Death benefit was provided to residents with Badung identity card. If a resident died, the family could apply to get the death benefit with a death certificate from hospital, hamlet head to subdistrict level and it should be submitted to the Badung Population and Civil Registry Office. The benefit amounted to IDR 2.5 million per person. The amount had been increased from the year 2013. Previously, the death benefit provided by the Badung County was IDR 1.5 million per person. GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Israel withdrew most of its ground troops from the Gaza Strip on Sunday in an apparent winding down of the nearly monthlong operation against Hamas that has left more than 1,800 Palestinians and more than 60 Israelis dead. Even as Israel said it was close to completing its mission, heavy fighting raged in parts of Gaza, with at least 10 people killed in what U.N. and Palestinian officials said was an Israeli airstrike near a U.N. shelter. The United States lashed out at Israel, saying it was “appalled” by the “disgraceful” attack. And with Hamas officials vowing to continue their fight, it remained uncertain whether Israel could unilaterally end the war. Israel launched its military operation in Gaza on July 8 in response to weeks of heavy rocket fire, carrying out hundreds of airstrikes across the crowded seaside territory. It then sent in ground forces July 17 in what it said was a mission to destroy the tunnels used by Hamas to carry out attacks.
Hamas has fired more than 3,000 rockets into Israel during what has turned into the bloodiest round of fighting ever between the two enemies. Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman, confirmed the bulk of ground troops had been pulled out of Gaza after the military concluded it had destroyed most of the tunnel network. He said Israel had detected some 30 tunnels that were dug along the border for what he called a “synchronized attack” on Israel. “We’ve caused substantial damage to this network to an extent where we’ve basically taken this huge threat and made it minimal,” he said. In the same period last year, Bali’s exports of silver ornaments were worth only US$3.11 million, the provincial industry and trade office said. The export volume, however, declined 21.70 percent from 10.19 units to 7.98 million units of various types of silver ornaments, data at the office showed. Silver ornaments, mainly from the area of Celuk in the regency of Gianyar, contributed 2.5 percent to Bali’s total export earning of US$215.04 million in the five months period. The see-through technique involves pumping a series of chemicals through blood vessels, as well as other passages in the brain and spinal cord. Some chemicals form a mesh to hold tissue in place. Others wash out the fats that make tissue block light. It takes about a week to create a transparent mouse, Gradinaru said. The researchers have also made transparent rats, which take about two weeks, she said. Scientists can use stains to highlight anatomical details like the locations of active genes.

Such condition, for instance, can be seen in the forest area located right in front of the office of the East Bali Forest Management Unit (KPH) and office of the Kintamani subdistrict head. Based on observation, the forest area in the west of Kintamani highway was stuffed with a lot of rubbish. Other than organic waste, inorganic waste such as plastic was also widely strewn in the forest. A large pile of rubbish in the forest indirectly indicated if the waste disposal in the forest had gone on long enough. Ironically, location of the forest stuffed with a lot of rubbish was directly across the office of the East Bali Forest Management Unit and Kintamani subdistrict head. When asked for his confirmation, the subdistrict head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, did not dismiss such condition. He acknowledged the forest located right in front of his office had been stuffed with a lot of rubbish. According to him, waste disposal by individual of local community into the forest of Kintamani had taken place quite a long time.
Dirgayusa admitted that all this time his party actually had been repeatedly trying to give an understanding to the community including a warning against people who were found disposing rubbish in the forest. Unluckily, what he conveyed was not obeyed by local community. According to Dirgayusa, before the condition was like that, the rubbish disposed into the forest next to the office of Kintamani subdistrict head already declined. But since some time later, the volume of waste dumped in the forest increased again. To avoid the increasing number of rubbish in the forest, his party planned to do fencing on the outskirts of the forest with lively trees. Although all this time many areas in Kintamani were used as disposal site, he claimed to be unable to imposed sanctions against the residents. So far, there was no regulation governing sanctions for discharging rubbish in the forest. “We just can reprimand and warn people found disposing rubbish,” he said. According to Dirgayusa, the waste problem and other violations in the forest were actually the responsibility of the Forest Management Unit. Meanwhile, his party as sub-district head only handled the maintenance of social behavior of its residents not to dispose rubbish into the forest. (ina)

BANGLI - Condition of Singamandawa Market in Kintamani seems to get very minimal attention from local government. Apparently this largest traditional market in Kintamani is let be uncontrolled and without clear arrangement. As evidence, though many stalls are still vacant inside the market, a number of traders are allowed to sell on sidewalk at edge of highway. Based on observation on Sunday (Aug 3), condition of the market located east of the highway was really chaotic. More traders preferred to sell in front of the market even though they should peddle their goods on sidewalk. Inevitably such condition triggered chaos. Moreover, the market had not adequate parking facilities. When asked for his confirmation regarding the matter, the subdistrict head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, acknowledged the problems existing at Singamandawa Market was quite complex. He said that many traders preferred to sell in the front of the market because the market was not open every day but periodically on particular days. In addition, not all the
stalls in the market were occupied. According to him, to arrange the market was needed the data collection and sustainable supervision by local Revenue Service in cooperation with the management of local market. Capacity of the market and the number of traders needed to be reviewed. According to Dirgayusa, all this time the management of the market did not have accurate data on the number of traders and market capacity. “There are no definitive data whether so far the traders at the market exceed the capacity or many spaces are not occupied,” he said. In addition, to facilitate the public to find out stuff needed, it was required data collection and re-arrangement in the matter of the category of goods. By that way, traders selling similar commodities could be placed at the same complex. He admitted that all this time his party only made an approach to traders and appealed to sell in the market area. SINGARAJA - The entry of investors establishing villas at certain villages in Buleleng has not given a positive impact on local villages. Rural authorities seem to get losses only rather than benefits where they expect to get revenue from this sector. Instead of hoping to gain revenue for the village, when the village authority asks for voluntary donation, the villa owners, mostly foreign nationals, are very rarely willing to participate by setting aside their business profits. At least, this condition is experienced by almost all rural authorities whose territory is established with villa by foreigners running the business in Buleleng. One of them is Bukti village, Kubutambahan subdistrict. Since the past few years, many foreigners have built villas along the coastline of Bukti village. Interestingly, virtually all the land areas built with villas have the status as free-state land, but having been transformed into private ownership and built with villas by foreigners. Headman of Bukti, Kubutambahan subdistrict, Gede Wardana,
when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Aug 3) said that his village actually intended to get revenue from the villas built by the foreigners. However, in fact it was very difficult for him to make it into one of the revenue sources for the village. It was not only caused by the fact that rural authorities had not yet owned a legal basis to collect revenue from the villas, but local government also still had a trouble to ensnare the villa business so as they could donate the business profit for the region. “We have not been able to get revenue from the villas, whereas the villas are operated commercially. Other than we do not have a legal basis, the county government still seems difficult to get any income from the villa sector,” he said. On the other hand, Wardana
hoped that villages would not become ‘spectators’ with the rise of villa businesses. To that end, his party attempted so that many local residents could be absorbed as employees at the villas built by foreigners. So far, foreigners who built villas at the village had employed local residents, but the number was relatively small. Therefore, his party would make a more intensive approach to foreigners having the villas so that more and more local residents could be employed at the villas. “We think the approach to villa owners will help that more local residents can be employed at the villas. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LONDON — Jude Law feels his work options are widening as he gets older, and he revels in the complications. The 41-year-old British actor — best known for his roles in “The Talented Mr Ripley,” ‘’Cold Mountain” and more recently “Sherlock Holmes” — says there is now “less emphasis on playing romantic leads.” “You get over a certain age, and you’re more complicated anyway,” he said in an interview. “So, I guess characters written for that age are more complicated, you know.” Law said he likes to take risks by picking roles that terrify him, such as his much-acclaimed stint in “Henry V” in London’s West End last year. “There’s this moment when you haven’t quite learnt your lines, the play doesn’t feel like it’s coming together or at least you don’t feel that you’ve fully understood the role or indeed the piece yet and everyone’s looking around for a way out, an excuse,” he said, recalling the rehearsal period.

Marvel’s ‘Guardians’ rockets to top of box office Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — “Guardians of the Galaxy” blasted past expectations at the weekend box office. Marvel Studios’ cosmic romp starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista as members of an intergalactic band of rebels earned $94 million in its debut weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Ahead of its Friday debut, box office analysts initially projected that the comic book adaptation would earn between $60 million and $75 million in North America. The out-of-this-world launch gives “Guardians” the biggest opening for a film released in the traditionally low-key month of August, a record previously held by the $69.2 million debut of 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum.” It also makes “Guardians” the third largest opening of 2014, coming behind the $95 million inauguration of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in April and the $100 million launch of “Transformers: Age of Extinction” in June. “Guardians,” which also features Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel voicing the computer-generated characters Rocket Raccoon and Groot, was originally considered a risky proposition for Marvel and “Guardians” distributor Walt Disney Co. because it features more obscure characters from the Marvel universe and is set almost entirely in outer space. Despite any apprehension, Marvel was betting on “Guardians,” written and directed by “Slither” filmmaker James Gunn, to be a blockbuster. The studio announced at Comic-Con in San Diego last month that a sequel is already set for release in 2017. Marvel’s next films are the follow-up “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Ant-Man” starring Paul

This regulation explicitly governs the distribution of modern retail. Article 22 (point 1 and 2) expressly requires shopping malls and modern stores to sell commodities of domestic products of at least 80 percent of all the existing products. A board of the Association of
Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs (HIPMI) of Bali Chapter, Gede Semadi, said that his party emphatically agreed to the regulation. Moreover, Bali had many local products that were competitive in foreign markets. “As a good resident, we should love local products by buying domestic products,” said
Semadi. Yet, he said that it was something reasonable if there was a rejection especially by modern stores predominantly importing goods. He said that any decision would surely draw pros and cons. “It just needs to find out the best solution in order to get a majority of local products,” he said. Does it have something to do with the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2015? “Indonesia has been an open country from the New Order era. I think that on entering the AEC it will remain the same,” said this successful
businessman. On that account, he hoped the rules should be emphasized, while the employers should not be spoiled and just waited for the government to enforce the rules. A great businessman, he pointed out, should be ready to compete and survive in any condition. “In my opinion, the AEC will not significantly influence us. For instance, the AEC will free labor to work in ASEAN countries. In Indonesia, it has long happened. Actually the AEC just legalizes the practices which have been running for a long time,” he said.
Similar statement was delivered by Agus Mulyawan, a business consultant. He agreed to the regulations made to protect local products. In addition, local products should remain nurtured and empowered so as to be able to compete at the AEC 2015 as well as in the domestic market. “AEC 2015 is aiming to create the ASEAN into a single market and production base unity will be a challenge, considering the population of Indonesia, especially Bali will certainly become a destination market for the products of other ASEAN countries,” he said.
