Construction of crib causes abrasion in other location
IBP/Eka Adhiyasa
Abrasion happened at Padanggalak Beach that located not far from Serangan Island. One of the caused of abrasion in Padanggalak Beach according to environmental observer is reclamation that conducted at Serangan Island. Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Reclamation plan carried out in the sea of Tanjung Benoa, Badung, is ascertained to harm the environment in general. Moreover, all this time similar case also happened to the reclamation of Serangan Island. Based on the studies conducted so far, construction of one-meter crib at one location will harm four meters on the other beach with unstable character. This condition will also occur if the reclamation is undertaken at Tanjung Benoa. Moreover, the reclamation plan by investors will reach an area of 520 hectares. “The impact will be negative for Bali,” said Coordinator of the Working Secretariat for Environmental Conservation (SKPPLH) Bali, I Made Mangku, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Jul 3). He said the impact would take place for ten years. In other words, the abrasion would reach a satura-
tion point after ten years because the characteristic of most beaches in Bali was unstable or secondary. “For instance, reclamation on Serangan Island has harmed Sanur Beach, and crib was then built along the Sanur Beach; later on it will harm the beach in Gianyar, and so on. And this will also happen when
the reclamation at Tanjung Benoa occurs,” said Mangku. Made Mangku said the reclamation at Tanjung Benoa also needed to be assessed in terms of the carrying capacity of the overloaded Southern Bali. Limited carrying capacity should get a concern from the investor because if it was ignored, then
the people of Bali would be affected. Aside from absorbing only a few local employments, it would also draw the urbanites and dense population growth would occur in Southern Bali. In terms of the environmental point of view, any changes in the landscape at one point would have a negative impact elsewhere. The reason to stem tsunami according to the initiator was actually just a disguise. The problem was that the reclamation at Tanjung Benoa would even endanger Bali in general because the secondary nature of beaches in Bali was then converted into a primary nature, so that its negative impact would
occur on the other beach. In other words, it would kindle a disaster elsewhere. “Continuation of this development highly depends on the commitment of the leaders of Bali in the executive and legislative whether they can reject the plan of investor or even go hand in hand with the interests of the investor,” he said. Mangku added that pursuant to the existing plan, at the location would be built a condotel, five-star hotel, circuit, racecourse, marina and a swimming pool around the reclamation area. On that account, it should consider the existing capacity of the region. (kmb12)
