NEW YORK - Eminem on Sunday fueled rumors that he was dating Nicki Minaj, creating an ultimate hip-hop power couple -- and one which few would have anticipated. Eminem, the top-selling rapper of all time, addressed speculation of the relationship as he headlined the Governors Ball festival in New York -- although his phrasing was odd enough to leave lingering doubts. “I’m going to tell you something about Nicki that she don’t even know,” Eminem told the crowd. “We go together!” he said to cheers. “That’s all I wanted to say. Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.” Minaj, one of the most influential women in hip-hop, suggested a relationship with Eminem late last month when she contributed a verse to the song “Big Bank” by rapper YG. “Told ‘em I met Slim Shady / Bag the Em / Once he go black he’ll be back again,” she said, using one of the alter ego character names of
the white rapper. Posting the verse on Instagram, Minaj was asked by a fan whether she was in fact dating Eminem and she replied, “Yes.” But the unusually direct response stirred social media chatter that the relationship was little more than teasing between the two, and Eminem was coy on the subject when addressing an earlier concert. Eminem, 45, has generated headlines for his turbulent personal life -- and often violent lyricism about women -- since he emerged in the 1990s. He twice married and divorced Kim Scott, his high school sweetheart from Michigan. The Trinidad-born Minaj, 35, last year said she had ended a two-year relationship with fellow rapper Meek Mill. LOS ANGELES - “Solo: A Star Wars Story” clung to the top spot in North American theaters this weekend but again fell below expectations, taking in $29.3 million, just over a third its opening-weekend receipts, said box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. The three-day estimate left the film well behind two recent predecessors in the popular sci-fi franchise: 2016’s “Rogue One” made $64 million in its second weekend while last year’s “The Last Jedi” did even better, at $71 million, according to Variety. Some film analysts blame “Star Wars” fatigue. Even by the standards of today’s sequel/prequel-heavy Hollywood, the franchise has been prolific. Still, the Disney/Lucasfilm collaboration, starring Alden Ehrenreich as a younger version of the swashbuckling space pilot, has amassed a cumulative global total of $264 million, something even Chewbacca probably would not sneeze at. A strong second in North American
theaters was “Deadpool 2” from 20th Century Fox, at $23.3 million. That movie, the 11th installment in the XMen series based on Marvel Comics characters, stars Ryan Reynolds as the surly title character. In third spot was a new release, “Adrift” from STX Films, at $11.5 million. The movie stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin in the true-life story of a young couple whose sailboat is slammed by a hurricane in mid-ocean, leaving Claflin badly injured, the boat in ruins and Woodley having to find the way back without navigation or communication tools. In its sixth week out, Disney’s “Avengers: Infinity War” performed well, pulling in $10.4 million for fourth place. The film, starring Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch and Scarlett Johansson, has now taken in $643 million domestically and a resounding $1.96 billion worldwide, making it the fourth biggest global release of all time. At least 25 people were killed when Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted Sunday, belching ash and rock and forcing the capital’s main airport to close. The volcano expelled hot muddy material that caused the deaths -- including of several children -- in the El Rodeo and Las Lajas communities located on its southern slope, disaster agency spokesman David de Leon said in a WhatsApp group. Search and rescue operations for the missing and dead have been suspended due to low light and dangerous conditions, and will resume early on Monday morning, he said. The eruption of the 3,763-meter (12,346-foot) volcano sent ash billowing over the surrounding area, turning plants and trees gray and blanketing streets, cars and people.
Farmers covered in ash fled for their lives as civil defense staffers tried to relocate them to shelters during the event. National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) chief Sergio Cabanas said earlier that the eruption also left 20 injured and affected more than 1.7 million people. President Jimmy Morales an-
nounced a red alert for Escuintla, Chimaltenango and Sacatepequez, the areas most affected by the eruption, and an orange alert throughout the country. Cabanas did not rule out the number of dead increasing, as there are “missing persons, but we do not know how many.” Dense ash blasted out by the volcano shut down Guatemala City’s international airport, civil aviation said. People were working to clean ash off the runways to get the airport operating again. The eruption is the second major one this year from the peak, following another that subsided at the beginning of February after sending ash towering 1.7 kilometers into the sky. A September 2012 eruption of the volcano saw 10,000 people evacuated, while another in February 2015 forced the closure of the capital’s main airport. Apart from the Fuego volcano, there are two other active

The decline in volcanic activities of Mount Agung has not yet completely made the former refugees able to breathe. Many refugees are still troubled because their property has been already sold. Many are forced to change profession but the results are not as expected. The former refugees mostly come from the slopes and the foot of Mount Agung. Every day they usually rely on farming and gardening. Actually, many of them have high intention to return to the previous profession but they cannot because of having no capital. For instance, I Wayan Karta, 40, is one of the former refugees remaining to live hard. Before the crisis of Mount Agung, this man living in the area of Alas Kesasekan, Sebudi village, Selat, has a hobby of gardening while raising cattle. “I used to raising two cows, but none today,” he said on Sunday (Jun. 3). Karta claimed to have sold his cattle at the beginning of evacuating to Swecapura Stadium, Klungkung. When returning from the refuge, he hardly brought cash as the result of
selling cattle has run out for consumption during the evacuation. “I sold my cattle cheaply, only IDR 2 million per head whereas they had been bargained at IDR 10 million,” he recalled. To survive, Karta who lives alone at a house measuring 4 x 6 meters should change profession into bamboo wall weaver. From his job, he can only earn as much as IDR 10,000 per day. His woven bamboo wall is sold to collector at Muntig hamlet, Sebudi. He wanted to raise cattle again but having no capital while the cattle have already been sold out. So, he has no money even though for purchasing calf. In addition, he does not dare to
cultivate his garden as being worried if the activities of Mount Agung will rise again. The difficulties suffered by Karta are not just a matter of work, everyday he is also difficult to get clean water. For the needs of cooking and drinking, he relies on rainwater, and it is even obtained by asking to his neighbor’s cistern. Karya himself has no place to hold such rainwater. Amidst the difficulties encountered, Karta hoped the government can pay attention, at least can assist by purchasing him cattle to be raised. Hopefully, similar assistance can also be channeled to other people experiencing similar conditions. “If possible, the government can also provide cistern assistance. If there is water, surely it will be easier,” he hoped. (117)

GIANYAR — Various efforts are made to develop Kendran rural tourism in Tegallalang into a tourist destination of Gianyar district. In addition to continuously cleaning up and enriching the tourist destinations, it is also held some events. One of them is by holding Holy Water Festival on Sunday (Jun. 3) by utilizing various types of water sources at Kenderan village.
‘Surprising’ methane dunes found on Pluto Pluto’s atmosphere has a surface pressure 100,000 times lower than Earth’s, which researchers suspected might be too little to allow tiny grains of solid methane to mobilize and become airborne. Yet mild winds blowing across Pluto’s surface at speeds of some 19-25 miles (30-40 kilometers) per hour have forged these ripples at the border of an ice plain and mountain range, said the report in the journal Science.
“The likely source of the dune grains is methane ice blown from nearby mountains,” said the Science report. “Although nitrogen ice cannot be ruled out.” The dunes are scattered across a belt-like area some 45 miles (75 kilometers) across, and were spotted with NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft when it flew by in 2015, said the report. “When we first saw the New Horizons images, we thought instantly that these were dunes but
it was really surprising because we know there is not much of an atmosphere,” said co-author Jani Radebaugh, associate professor in the department of geological sciences at Brigham Young University. “However despite being 30 times further away from the Sun as the Earth, it turns out Pluto still has Earth-like characteristics.” Other cosmic bodies that are known to have dunes -- besides Earth -- include Mars and Venus, as well as Saturn’s moon Titan and the comet 67P/ ChuryumovGerasimenko. “We knew that every solar
system body with an atmosphere and a solid rocky surface has dunes on it, but we didn’t know what we’d find on Pluto,” said lead author Matt Telfer, lecturer in physical geography at the University of Plymouth. “It turns out that even though there is so little atmosphere, and the surface temperature is around -230 Celsius (-382 Fahrenheit), we still get dunes forming.” Scientists also believe the dunes, which seem undisturbed, likely formed within the last 500,000 years, possibly much more recently. On Earth, to form such dunes with sand requires stronger winds,
said co-author Eric Parteli, lecturer in Computational Geosciences at the University of Cologne. “The considerably lower gravity of Pluto, and the extremely low atmospheric pressure, means the winds needed to maintain sediment transport can be a hundred times lower,” he said. On Pluto, solar radiation also causes temperature gradients in the granular ice layer, which contributes to the ability of dunes to form. “Together, we have found that these combined processes can form dunes under normal, everyday wind conditions on Pluto,” Parteli said. The mother of all lizards found in Italian Alps PARIS - Scientists said Wednesday they had tracked down the oldest known lizard, a tiny creature that lived about 240 million years ago when Earth had a single continent and dinosaurs were brand new. Scans of the fossilised skeleton of Megachirella revealed the chameleon-sized reptile was an ancestor of today’s lizards and snakes, which belong to a group called squamates, an international team wrote in the science journal Nature. This finding dragged the group back in time by 75 million years, and means that “lizards inhabited
the planet since at least 240 million years ago,” study co-author Tiago Simoes of the University of Alberta in Canada told AFP. That, in turn, suggested that squamates had already split from other ancient reptiles before the Permian/Triassic mass extinction some 252 million years ago, and survived it. Up to 95 percent of marine- and 75 percent of terrestrial life on Earth was lost. This has been running naturally from time to time. Except we are dictated to make something to do with culture, this may be possible. However, this one is natural and the tradition goes the way it is,” he said. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Ari Brahmanta, who officially opened this Holy Water Festival, welcomes the public awareness to develop the territory. He said this effort is a form of tourism branding where the village is rich in springs, especially those related to historical and religious
tourism. Kenderan village is suitable to be developed into the buffer of rural tourism after Ubud rural tourism. Besides, this festival is expected to add various types of tourism promotions in Gianyar,” he added. This official familiarly addressed as Gung Ari hoped the emergence of various tourism agendas will be able to empower local people and at the same time increase the economic income as a whole. “We expect that after this festival, Kendran tourism is growing,” he concluded. Meanwhile, Chief of Kendran rural tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis), I Made Arka, said that his territory has eleven locations of holy springs, believed to be a separate grace for the region. “Other than being made into the icon, it also strengthens the unity and brotherhood among the residents and it has something to do with the history of local village having abundant water so that it becomes an icon and unites all villagers,” he added. Aside from Kenderan village, two locations will also be developed namely the Purusa and Pradana waterfall, upstream and downstream of the local village. “Kendran village has many springs as one of the uniqueness that is not owned by other villages. MANGUPURA — Badung district government rolls out overseas scholarship program for students of Badung having outstanding achievement for academic year 2018/2019. This year, Badung district government limits to 20 people only because all costs are borne by the local government. Unfortunately, up to Sunday (Jun. 3) only five applicants registered in the Badung Education Agency of the 20 quotas prepared. Actually, the registration remained open until Monday (Jun. 4). Therefore, there is still time for parents to enroll their sons and daughters. Head of the Badung Education Agency, I Ketut Widia Astika, said his agency will wait until the clos-
ing date of the registration. “Well, the applicants of the overseas scholarship program are not so many and we wait until tomorrow (Monday). It is the last registration day,” said Widia Astika, when confirmed on Sunday (Jun. 3). According to him, the lack of interest among the Badung community in the overseas scholarship program has been overcome by doing dissemination. “Dissemination has been done to the community through the schools,” he said. This official from Kerobokan, North Kuta, hoped that until the end of the registration day the number of participants increases according to the quota provided. “Hopefully, there are more applicants tomorrow (Monday) because it is the last registration day. Previ-
ously, some applicants still lacked of requirements,” he said. Regarding the extension of the registration period, Widia Astika admitted that he will conduct consultation to the parties invited to work together. “If the applicants are still indeed a little, we will consult to the partner we work with,” he said. As is known, the overseas scholarship program is given to the Badung community. As planned, every scholarship recipient will be given a maximum of IDR 500 million per year. He predicted the traffic density in this year’s homecoming traffic will occur on day seven before the Eid Al Fitr or on June 9-13. Meanwhile, the density of homecoming backflow will occur on June 18-20. This analysis is based on the calculation of joint holidays and long holiday. MSC Certificate important to increase tuna exports: Minister Susi MANGUPURA - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certificate is important for Indonesia to increase its exports of tuna fish to other countries. “Indonesia is known as one of the largest producers of tuna fish in the world but its earning from tuna exports is relatively small,” Susi said after closing the ceremony of the “3rd Bali Tuna Conference” in Kuta, Badung District, Bali Province, on Friday night. Indonesia accounts for 16 percent or around 1.2 million tons of the world`s tuna fish production of 7.7 million tons a year. Director General of Deep Sea Fishing of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry Zulficar Mochtar said in 2017, Indonesia could export only around 198,131 tons of tuna fish worth US$569 million or around
Rp7.9 trillion. The MSC certificate will give detailed information for export destination countries about the origin of the fish and fishing process, Susi said, adding that, with the certificate, exports would have no restriction. The minister further described the MSC certification as a break through, saying that it would increase the country`s earning from tuna exports because the commodity would be sold at a premium price. Without the MSC certificate, the tuna will only belong to the third class price, she added. Part adventure, part scientific research, Lecomte and his eight-person support team will conduct a host of marine experiments as they seek to raise awareness of ocean pollution and plastic contamination. Two days after turning 51, Lecomte will enter the waters off Japan’s east coast Tuesday, after
which the swimmer will be at the mercy of the elements. The danger of sharks and paralysing jellyfish also lurks -- but the Texas-based architect tweaks the nose of fear. “I like to push my personal limit and try to find what that is,” Lecomte told AFP in an interview aboard his yacht. “I’m like a tiger in a cage going around and around,” he added, after seven years of planning. “The mental part is much more important than the physical. You have to make sure you always think about something

The plastic bottles, bags, food wrappers and other detritus have gushed out of a drain that ends in the shanty, leaving stinking sewer water clogging the roads. Stray dogs, goats and cows munch the plastic waste as toddlers run around trying to retrieve footballs and water bottles. India is to be the focus of World Environment Day on Tuesday, but it is far from the minds of the long-suffering inhabitants of Taimur Nagar. “You can see how bad the conditions are here. It’s completely choked with plastic,” said Bhola Ram, shaking his head. Taimur Nagar is one of many slums in Delhi and countless other Indian cities struggling to cope with waste, particularly the plastic pollution that is the main theme of World Environment Day. But a sweeping look over Taimur Nagar underlines the challenges the country faces with its waste. India generates around 5.6 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, according to government figures, with Delhi among the worst cities for plastic consumption. The city banned plastic bags in 2009 and later expanded it to all plastic packaging and single-use disposable plastic. But the ban is rarely enforced. Plastic bags are still the staple for carrying vegetables, fruit, meat and restaurant takeaways. Taimur Nagar’s residents know little of the hazards of non-biodegradable plastic to the water supply and the animals sat around. Used to the filth, residents say they are resigned to their fate. “It’s like living in hell. You can see there is plastic garbage everywhere. We are poor and we have no choice but to live and die here,” said Shreepal Singh, a waste dealer. Conditions were not always not so bad. “When I came here 40 years ago the drain had clean water. The area was not so dirty. But as more and more people started living here, things have gone worse,” said Saroj Sharma, a mother of three. (afp)

Bayer to ditch Monsanto name after mega-merger
“Bayer will remain the name of the firm. Monsanto will be discontinued as the name of the business,” the Leverkusen-based group said in a statement, adding that it expects to close the $63 billion (54 billion euro) deal on Thursday. Bosses plan to name the merged agrichemical division Bayer Crop Science once the buyout is complete, German business newspaper Handelsblatt reported, citing “industry sources”. Bayer’s takeover bid for Monsanto targets the St Louis-based company for its high-tech genetically modified seeds, many designed to produce crops resistant to its proprietary pesticides. The mammoth deal will produce a global giant with 115,000 employees and revenues of some 45 billion euros. Transactions in the BBTF 2018 are targeted to reach IDR 7.8 trillion. Such amount increases when compared to last year estimated to reach IDR 5.6 trillion. He is optimistic if the figure can be achieved, considering there are increases in sellers and buyers in the BBTF 2018. “Currently, the sellers amount to 225 and I’d like to deliver that only 18 or 20 booths remain, while the others have been sold. Our target buyer is 275,” explained Ardana. He added that the 275 participating buyers are from 42 countries or it increases when compared to the implementation in 2017, only reaching 38 countries. The current buyers are recognized to come from a number of potential countries, including the People’s Republic of China, India, Middle East and European markets.
The committee will divide them into two categories, namely fully hosted buyers and partially hosted buyers. Fully hosted buyers are tourism operators that can bring in at least 10,000 tourists to Bali with an average expenditure of USD 1,265 during their stay. They will be facilitated with complete services including airline tickets to Bali, hotels, and meals. Ardhana expected the support of all parties, especially the central government, provinces, regions, industries, and communities to succeed this fifth year event. The BBTF 2018 also involves 21 provinces in Indonesia to participate in marketing their tourist destinations in their respective region. The participating regions increases compared to 19 provinces last year. Division Head of the Tourism Industry at the Bali Tourism Office, Ida Ayu Indah, added that her division supports the success of this event morally. Provincial government hoped the Association of Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali as the executing team can sell more tour packages to the surrounding communities, especially the rural tourism. “There should be something to see that promotes the performing arts of the tourist attraction, something to do where travelers can experience the excursion itself, such as cooking classes, and something to buy where tourists can buy local products,” she said.. The cultural tourism in Bali, said Ayu Indah, refers to the Bali Gubernatorial Regulation No. 2/2012. Tour packages sold do not deviate from the regulation. The BBTF 2018 event

Ex-sex worker made a dame in New Zealand honours list

WELLINGTON - A former sex worker was made a dame in the Queen’s Birthday honours list in New Zealand on Monday, in recognition of her services to the sex industry. Catherine Healy was instrumental in bringing about New Zealand’s 2003 decriminalising of sex work and the introduction of some of the most liberal prostitution laws in the world. But the 62-year-old said she was surprised at the honour, which officially makes her a dame companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. “It’s not something I would have expected,” she told Radio New Zealand. “In fact, I always say I expect to be arrested at dawn, not to have this kind of tremendous honour and I was just very affected, very touched.” Healy has led the New Zealand Prostitutes Collective since 1989 and her honours citation said she
had built it “into a globally respected public health provider”. She spearheaded the campaign for the 2003 law reform which allowed brothels and street workers to operate legally. The reform meant sex workers were covered by employment, health and safety laws, giving them rights they had never previously enjoyed. Healy said her new title showed how much attitudes had changed. “This honour, and to have it given to me, is about saying, ‘Okay, it’s okay, you can come in from the cold, you and yours’,” she told the national broadcaster. New Zealand awards honours twice a year -- at New Year and to mark the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II in early June. Pekanbaru immigration detention center accommodates 1,177 immigrants
JAKARTA - The Pekanbaru immigration detention center currently accommodates a total of 1,177 immigrants from various countries. The number increased because of 10 news births, Junior Manerep Galingging, head of the center, said here, Sunday.
The detention center is overcrowded because the number of immigrants has surpassed the center`s capacity, he added. Several of them have to be accommodated in the so-called Community Houses such as in Siak Resort, Rina Hotel, Tasoya Hotel, Novrey House and Satria Hotel. They came among other things from Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Iran, Sudan, and Rohingnya. Of the total number, some 700 are refugees and the rest are asylum seekers from conflict-ridden countries. Galingging has frequently contacted the Organization for Migration (IOM) representatives to transfer the asylum seekers to third countries. Australia has been a favorite destination of foreign immigrants, who are using Indonesia as a transit nation.(ant)

BANDA ACEH - The government of Aceh province has invited numerous Muslim majority countries in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East to enliven the Aceh Culture Week (PKA) that will last from August 5 to 15, 2018 in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh. “Muslim countries such as Turkey, Kazakhstan, and the others in Southeast Asia and the Middle East were invited to enliven the PKA 2018,” Aceh Deputy Governor Nova Iriansyah remarked here on Monday. Iriansyah, who also acted as the committee chairman of the 7th Aceh Cultural
Week, said that besides those countries, all provinces in Indonesia were also invited to attend the event of cultural art which is held every five years. According to him, there there are dozens of series of art and cultural attractions that will be packed in seven main activities with the highest numbers during the Aceh Cultural Week this year. The Swiss federal tribunal, Guerrero’s last legal recourse, overturned a ruling by the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that saw him suspended for 14 months. As well as allowing Guerrero
to participate in the June 14July 15 showpiece, it has also given the player hope of seeing his ban reduced or annulled as it ruled the CAS decision “unjustified”. Guerrero has played just a handful of matches for his Brazilian club Flamengo since he was initially banned on November 3, a ruling that forced him out of Peru’s two-legged World Cup play-off with New Zealand. Ex-sex worker made a dame in New Zealand honours list

WELLINGTON - A former sex worker was made a dame in the Queen’s Birthday honours list in New Zealand on Monday, in recognition of her services to the sex industry. Catherine Healy was instrumental in bringing about New Zealand’s 2003 decriminalising of sex work and the introduction of some of the most liberal prostitution laws in the world. But the 62-year-old said she was surprised at the honour, which officially makes her a dame companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. “It’s not something I would have expected,” she told Radio New Zealand. “In fact, I always say I expect to be arrested at dawn, not to have this kind of tremendous honour and I was just very affected, very touched.” Healy has led the New Zealand Prostitutes Collective since 1989 and her honours citation said she
had built it “into a globally respected public health provider”. She spearheaded the campaign for the 2003 law reform which allowed brothels and street workers to operate legally. The reform meant sex workers were covered by employment, health and safety laws, giving them rights they had never previously enjoyed. Healy said her new title showed how much attitudes had changed. “This honour, and to have it given to me, is about saying, ‘Okay, it’s okay, you can come in from the cold, you and yours’,” she told the national broadcaster. New Zealand awards honours twice a year -- at New Year and to mark the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II in early June. Pekanbaru immigration detention center accommodates 1,177 immigrants
JAKARTA - The Pekanbaru immigration detention center currently accommodates a total of 1,177 immigrants from various countries. The number increased because of 10 news births, Junior Manerep Galingging, head of the center, said here, Sunday.
The detention center is overcrowded because the number of immigrants has surpassed the center`s capacity, he added. Several of them have to be accommodated in the so-called Community Houses such as in Siak Resort, Rina Hotel, Tasoya Hotel, Novrey House and Satria Hotel. They came among other things from Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Iran, Sudan, and Rohingnya. Of the total number, some 700 are refugees and the rest are asylum seekers from conflict-ridden countries. Galingging has frequently contacted the Organization for Migration (IOM) representatives to transfer the asylum seekers to third countries. Australia has been a favorite destination of foreign immigrants, who are using Indonesia as a transit nation.(ant)

Bayer to ditch Monsanto name after mega-merger
“Bayer will remain the name of the firm. Monsanto will be discontinued as the name of the business,” the Leverkusen-based group said in a statement, adding that it expects to close the $63 billion (54 billion euro) deal on Thursday. Bosses plan to name the merged agrichemical division Bayer Crop Science once the buyout is complete, German business newspaper Handelsblatt reported, citing “industry sources”. He is optimistic if the figure can be achieved, considering there are increases in sellers and buyers in the BBTF 2018. “Currently, the sellers amount to 225 and I’d like to deliver that only 18 or 20 booths remain, while the others have been sold. Our target buyer is 275,” explained Ardana. He added that the 275 participating buyers are from 42 countries or it increases when compared to the implementation in 2017, only reaching 38 countries. The current buyers are recognized to come from a number of potential countries, including the People’s Republic of China, India, Middle East and European markets.
The committee will divide them into two categories, namely fully hosted buyers and partially hosted buyers. Fully hosted buyers are tourism operators that can bring in at least 10,000 tourists to Bali with an average expenditure of USD 1,265 during their stay. They will be facilitated with complete services including airline tickets to Bali, hotels, and meals. Ardhana expected the support of all parties, especially the central government, provinces, regions, industries, and communities to succeed this fifth year event. The BBTF 2018 also involves 21 provinces in Indonesia to participate in marketing their tourist destinations in their respective region. The participating regions increases compared to 19 provinces last year. Division Head of the Tourism Industry at the Bali Tourism Office, Ida Ayu Indah, added that her division supports the success of this event morally. Provincial government hoped the Association of Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali as the executing team can sell more tour packages to the surrounding communities, especially the rural tourism. “There should be something to see that promotes the performing arts of the tourist attraction, something to do where travelers can experience the excursion itself, such as cooking classes, and something to buy where tourists can buy local products,” she said.. The cultural tourism in Bali, said Ayu Indah, refers to the Bali Gubernatorial Regulation No. 2/2012. Tour packages sold do not deviate from the regulation. The BBTF 2018 event

MSC Certificate important to increase tuna exports: Minister Susi MANGUPURA - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certificate is important for Indonesia to increase its exports of tuna fish to other countries. “Indonesia is known as one of the largest producers of tuna fish in the world but its earning from tuna exports is relatively small,” Susi said after closing the ceremony of the “3rd Bali Tuna Conference” in Kuta, Badung District, Bali Province, on Friday night. Indonesia accounts for 16 percent or around 1.2 million tons of the world`s tuna fish production of 7.7 million tons a year. Director General of Deep Sea Fishing of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry Zulficar Mochtar said in 2017, Indonesia could export only around 198,131 tons of tuna fish worth US$569 million or around
Rp7.9 trillion. The MSC certificate will give detailed information for export destination countries about the origin of the fish and fishing process, Susi said, adding that, with the certificate, exports would have no restriction. The minister further described the MSC certification as a break through, saying that it would increase the country`s earning from tuna exports because the commodity would be sold at a premium price. Without the MSC certificate, the tuna will only belong to the third class price, she added. The minister, therefore, asks exporters to seek the MSC certificates as they would contribute to increase the price and improve the welfare of the country`s fishermen. The plastic bottles, bags, food wrappers and other detritus have gushed out of a drain that ends in the shanty, leaving stinking sewer water clogging the roads. Stray dogs, goats and cows munch the plastic waste as toddlers run around trying to retrieve footballs and water bottles. India is to be the focus of World Environment Day on Tuesday, but it is far from the minds of the long-suffering inhabitants of Taimur Nagar. “You can see how bad the conditions are here. It’s completely choked with plastic,” said Bhola Ram, shaking his head. Taimur Nagar is one of many slums in Delhi and countless other Indian cities struggling to cope with waste, particularly the plastic pollution that is the main theme of World Environment Day. But a sweeping look over Taimur Nagar underlines the challenges the country faces with its waste. India generates around 5.6 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, according to government figures, with Delhi among the worst cities for plastic consumption. The city banned plastic bags in 2009 and later expanded it to all plastic packaging and single-use disposable plastic. But the ban is rarely enforced. Plastic bags are still the staple for carrying vegetables, fruit, meat and restaurant takeaways. Taimur Nagar’s residents know little of the hazards of non-biodegradable plastic to the water supply and the animals sat around. Used to the filth, residents say they are resigned to their fate. “It’s like living in hell. You can see there is plastic garbage everywhere. We are poor and we have no choice but to live and die here,” said Shreepal Singh, a waste dealer. Conditions were not always not so bad. “When I came here 40 years ago the drain had clean water. The area was not so dirty. But as more and more people started living here, things have gone worse,” said Saroj Sharma, a mother of three. (afp)

‘Surprising’ methane dunes found on Pluto Pluto’s atmosphere has a surface pressure 100,000 times lower than Earth’s, which researchers suspected might be too little to allow tiny grains of solid methane to mobilize and become airborne. Yet mild winds blowing across Pluto’s surface at speeds of some 19-25 miles (30-40 kilometers) per hour have forged these ripples at the border of an ice plain and mountain range, said the report in the journal Science.
“The likely source of the dune grains is methane ice blown from nearby mountains,” said the Science report. “Although nitrogen ice cannot be ruled out.” The dunes are scattered across a belt-like area some 45 miles (75 kilometers) across, and were spotted with NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft when it flew by in 2015, said the report. “When we first saw the New Horizons images, we thought instantly that these were dunes but
it was really surprising because we know there is not much of an atmosphere,” said co-author Jani Radebaugh, associate professor in the department of geological sciences at Brigham Young University. “However despite being 30 times further away from the Sun as the Earth, it turns out Pluto still has Earth-like characteristics.” Other cosmic bodies that are known to have dunes -- besides Earth -- include Mars and Venus, as well as Saturn’s moon Titan and the comet 67P/ ChuryumovGerasimenko. “We knew that every solar
system body with an atmosphere and a solid rocky surface has dunes on it, but we didn’t know what we’d find on Pluto,” said lead author Matt Telfer, lecturer in physical geography at the University of Plymouth. “It turns out that even though there is so little atmosphere, and the surface temperature is around -230 Celsius (-382 Fahrenheit), we still get dunes forming.” Scientists also believe the dunes, which seem undisturbed, likely formed within the last 500,000 years, possibly much more recently. On Earth, to form such dunes with sand requires stronger winds,
said co-author Eric Parteli, lecturer in Computational Geosciences at the University of Cologne. “The considerably lower gravity of Pluto, and the extremely low atmospheric pressure, means the winds needed to maintain sediment transport can be a hundred times lower,” he said. On Pluto, solar radiation also causes temperature gradients in the granular ice layer, which contributes to the ability of dunes to form. “Together, we have found that these combined processes can form dunes under normal, everyday wind conditions on Pluto,” Parteli said. The mother of all lizards found in Italian Alps PARIS - Scientists said Wednesday they had tracked down the oldest known lizard, a tiny creature that lived about 240 million years ago when Earth had a single continent and dinosaurs were brand new. Scans of the fossilised skeleton of Megachirella revealed the chameleon-sized reptile was an ancestor of today’s lizards and snakes, which belong to a group called squamates, an international team wrote in the science journal Nature. This finding dragged the group back in time by 75 million years, and means that “lizards inhabited
the planet since at least 240 million years ago,” study co-author Tiago Simoes of the University of Alberta in Canada told AFP. MANGUPURA — Badung district government rolls out overseas scholarship program for students of Badung having outstanding achievement for academic year 2018/2019. This year, Badung district government limits to 20 people only because all costs are borne by the local government. Unfortunately, up to Sunday (Jun. 3) only five applicants registered in the Badung Education Agency of the 20 quotas prepared. Actually, the registration remained open until Monday (Jun. 4). Therefore, there is still time for parents to enroll their sons and daughters. Head of the Badung Education Agency, I Ketut Widia Astika, said his agency will wait until the clos-
ing date of the registration. “Well, the applicants of the overseas scholarship program are not so many and we wait until tomorrow (Monday). According to him, the lack of interest among the Badung community in the overseas scholarship program has been overcome by doing dissemination. “Dissemination has been done to the community through the schools,” he said. This official from Kerobokan, North Kuta, hoped that until the end of the registration day the number of participants increases according to the quota provided. “Hopefully, there are more applicants tomorrow (Monday) because it is the last registration day. Previ-
ously, some applicants still lacked of requirements,” he said. Regarding the extension of the registration period, Widia Astika admitted that he will conduct consultation to the parties invited to work together. “If the applicants are still indeed a little, we will consult to the partner we work with,” he said. The decline in volcanic activities of Mount Agung has not yet completely made the former refugees able to breathe. Many refugees are still troubled because their property has been already sold. Many are forced to change profession but the results are not as expected. The former refugees mostly come from the slopes and the foot of Mount Agung. Every day they usually rely on farming and gardening. Actually, many of them have high intention to return to the previous profession but they cannot because of having no capital. For instance, I Wayan Karta, 40, is one of the former refugees remaining to live hard. Before the crisis of Mount Agung, this man living in the area of Alas Kesasekan, Sebudi village, Selat, has a hobby of gardening while raising cattle. “I used to raising two cows, but none today,” he said on Sunday (Jun. 3). Karta claimed to have sold his cattle at the beginning of evacuating to Swecapura Stadium, Klungkung. When returning from the refuge, he hardly brought cash as the result of
selling cattle has run out for consumption during the evacuation. “I sold my cattle cheaply, only IDR 2 million per head whereas they had been bargained at IDR 10 million,” he recalled. cultivate his garden as being worried if the activities of Mount Agung will rise again. The difficulties suffered by Karta are not just a matter of work, everyday he is also difficult to get clean water. For the needs of cooking and drinking, he relies on rainwater, and it is even obtained by asking to his neighbor’s cistern. Karya himself has no place to hold such rainwater. Amidst the difficulties encountered, Karta hoped the government can pay attention, at least can assist by purchasing him cattle to be raised. Hopefully, similar assistance can also be channeled to other people experiencing similar conditions. “If possible, the government can also provide cistern assistance. NEW YORK - Eminem on Sunday fueled rumors that he was dating Nicki Minaj, creating an ultimate hip-hop power couple -- and one which few would have anticipated. Eminem, the top-selling rapper of all time, addressed speculation of the relationship as he headlined the Governors Ball festival in New York -- although his phrasing was odd enough to leave lingering doubts. “I’m going to tell you something about Nicki that she don’t even know,” Eminem told the crowd. “We go together!” he said to cheers. “That’s all I wanted to say. Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.” Minaj, one of the most influential women in hip-hop, suggested a relationship with Eminem late last month when she contributed a verse to the song “Big Bank” by rapper YG. “Told ‘em I met Slim Shady / Bag the Em / Once he go black he’ll be back again,” she said, using one of the alter ego character names of
the white rapper. Posting the verse on Instagram, Minaj was asked by a fan whether she was in fact dating Eminem and she replied, “Yes.” But the unusually direct response stirred social media chatter that the relationship was little more than teasing between the two, and Eminem was coy on the subject when addressing an earlier concert. Eminem, 45, has generated headlines for his turbulent personal life -- and often violent lyricism about women -- since he emerged in the 1990s. He twice married and divorced Kim Scott, his high school sweetheart from Michigan. The Trinidad-born Minaj, 35, last year said she had ended a two-year relationship with fellow rapper Meek Mill. ‘Solo’ stays aloft but loses altitude in North American theaters

LOS ANGELES - “Solo: A Star Wars Story” clung to the top spot in North American theaters this weekend but again fell below expectations, taking in $29.3 million, just over a third its opening-weekend receipts, said box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. The three-day estimate left the film well behind two recent predecessors in the popular sci-fi franchise: 2016’s “Rogue One” made $64 million in its second weekend while last year’s “The Last Jedi” did even better, at $71 million, according to Variety. Some film analysts blame “Star Wars” fatigue. Even by the standards of today’s sequel/prequel-heavy Hollywood, the franchise has been prolific. Still, the Disney/Lucasfilm collaboration, starring Alden Ehrenreich as a younger version of the swashbuckling space pilot, has amassed a cumulative global total of $264 million, something even Chewbacca probably would not sneeze at. A strong second in North American
theaters was “Deadpool 2” from 20th Century Fox, at $23.3 million. That movie, the 11th installment in the XMen series based on Marvel Comics characters, stars Ryan Reynolds as the surly title character. In third spot was a new release, “Adrift” from STX Films, at $11.5 million. The movie stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin in the true-life story of a young couple whose sailboat is slammed by a hurricane in mid-ocean, leaving Claflin badly injured, the boat in ruins and Woodley having to find the way back without navigation or communication tools. In its sixth week out, Disney’s “Avengers: Infinity War” performed well, pulling in $10.4 million for fourth place. The film, starring Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch and Scarlett Johansson, has now taken in $643 million domestically and a resounding $1.96 billion worldwide, making it the fourth biggest global release of all time. At least 25 people were killed when Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted Sunday, belching ash and rock and forcing the capital’s main airport to close. The volcano expelled hot muddy material that caused the deaths -- including of several children -- in the El Rodeo and Las Lajas communities located on its southern slope, disaster agency spokesman David de Leon said in a WhatsApp group. Search and rescue operations for the missing and dead have been suspended due to low light and dangerous conditions, and will resume early on Monday morning, he said. The eruption of the 3,763-meter (12,346-foot) volcano sent ash billowing over the surrounding area, turning plants and trees gray and blanketing streets, cars and people.
Farmers covered in ash fled for their lives as civil defense staffers tried to relocate them to shelters during the event. National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) chief Sergio Cabanas said earlier that the eruption also left 20 injured and affected more than 1.7 million people. President Jimmy Morales an-
nounced a red alert for Escuintla, Chimaltenango and Sacatepequez, the areas most affected by the eruption, and an orange alert throughout the country. The president said he and his government would determine whether to ask Congress to declare a state of emergency in the areas, while at the same time appealing to the population for calm. - Death toll may rise -

More than 3,000 people were evacuated due to the eruption, which affected rural communities around the volcano as well as Antigua Guatemala, a colonial-era town very popular with tourists in the Central American country, he said. Cabanas did not rule out the number of dead increasing, as there are “missing persons, but we do not know how many.” Dense ash blasted out by the volcano shut down Guatemala City’s international airport, civil aviation said. People were working to clean ash off the runways to get the airport operating again. The eruption is the second major one this year from the peak, following another that subsided at the beginning of February after sending ash towering 1.7 kilometers into the sky. A September 2012 eruption of the volcano saw 10,000 people evacuated, while another in February 2015 forced the closure of the capital’s main airport. Apart from the Fuego volcano, there are two other active
volcanos in Guatemala. One of them, Pacaya, is just 20 kilometers from Guatemala City.(afp)
