LOS ANGELES - Comedian Kathy Griffin tearfully apologized in a Friday press conference for posing with a fake bloodied and severed head depicting U.S. President Donald Trump, saying that she felt her career was now over and that Trump “broke” her. Griffin has lost sponsorships and jobs, including her role as co-host of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage with journalist Anderson Cooper, since a photograph and video from the shoot appeared on social media on Tuesday. President Trump said the image of Griffin with the gory mask resembling him was “sick” and that it had traumatized his family, especially his youngest son, 11-year-old Barron. Trump’s oldest son, Donald Jr., called for employers to drop the comedian. “I don’t think I will have a career after this. I’m going to be honest, (Trump) broke me,” said Griffin, 56, a two-time Emmy-winning performer known for her deliberately provocative brand of humor. She added that she had received death threats. Griffin reiterated the apology she posted on social media late on Tuesday, but remained defiant, saying, “I’m not afraid of Donald Trump, he’s a bully,” adding that she intended

to continue making jokes about the president. She also described herself as a provocative woman who has often had to deal with older white men in positions of power. “What’s happening to me has never happened ever, in the history of this great country, which is that a sitting president of the United States and his grown children and the first lady are personally, I feel, trying to ruin my life - forever,” she said. Griffin said the photo was intended to mock Trump’s comments during the presidential campaign, when he told CNN that Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly had “blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her - wherever” when she moderated a 2015 presidential debate. Trump’s remark was widely interpreted as referring to menstrual blood, implying that Kelly was in an unfriendly mood because she was menstruating. (rtr)

Airplane departures increases by 5.43 percent

DENPASAR - The number of international airplane departures from Ngurah Rai Airport in April 2017 reached 2,505 flight units. This number showed an increase of 5.43 percent compared to the previous month reaching 2,376 units. Such condition is in line with the number of international passenger flights in the same period, which increased by 8.67 percent, from 418,582 people in March 2017 to 454,882 people in April 2017.

It was revealed at the press conference of the central statistic agency (BPS) of Bali on Friday (Jun 2). Head of the BPS Bali, Adi Nugroho, said that in line with the airplane departure, the number of baggage and international air transport freight also increased by 10.72 percent, from 7.87 million tons to 8.71 million tons. For domestic air transport, the number of aircraft departing from Ngurah Rai Airport in April 2017 amounted to 3,298 flight units, an increase of 1.10 percent compared to the previous month reaching 3,262 flight units. This condition is not different from the number of passengers amounting to 421,255 people, or an increase of 11.29 percent compared to the previous month reaching 378,507 people. It is also in line with the number of baggage and freight increasing by 30.77 percent from 4.06 million tons in March 2017 to 5.31

million tons in April 2017. The number of baggage and air freight in international flight also increased by 10.72 percent, from 7.87 million tons to 8.71 million tons. Five countries becoming the main destinations for international airplane departure in April 2017 are Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong. Compared to the previous month, out of the five countries, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and China respectively showed an increase of 9.47 percent, 1.53 percent, 19.17 percent and 5.79 percent. Hong Kong decreased by 6.20 percent. In the meantime, the destination of departing passengers covered five countries namely Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong where all increased respectively by 10.47 percent, 6.70 percent, 15.20 percent, 11.18 percent and 5.78 percent. The increase in the number of aircraft and the number of passengers is alleged to have been caused by long weekend holiday on April 14-16 and April 22-24, 2017. Furthermore, when compared to April 2016, from the five destination countries there were two destination countries experiencing a decrease in the number of aircraft flight namely Australia and Hong Kong respectively amounting to 4.03 percent, and 17.49 percent. Then, for destination countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and China, there was an increase in the number of departing passengers respectively amounting to 21.15 percent, 36.84 percent, and 83.57 percent. SINGARAJA - Tectonic earthquakes remain to frequently shake the area of Tejakula village. This causes local residents restless. Besides, some residents are also worried about the damage to their buildings. Headman of Tejakula, Ketut Suardana, revealed that since a few days ago the earthquake has often hit his territory. The last one took place on Thursday (Jun 1) around 21:22 with the magnitude of below 3 on Richter scale. “Yesterday another earthquake occurred, but was not so strong,” he said on Friday (Jun 2). Although relatively being small, the natural phenomenon has caused many residents to be restless, especially when the earthquake took place at night. All residents directly went out to find a safer place. “Our residents are quite uneasy if an earthquake occurs. Surely they will flow out, while the quake leaves no damaged,” he said. local residents had also held exorcism rite (pecaruan) responding to the disaster. It is believed to be a way of begging for salvation and avoiding catastrophes. If it moves, it will cause shocks and be felt stronger in the building whose foundation is on backfill land. “The fault remains far from the earth’s plate, it poses a part of the soil layer and is categorized into local quake,” he explained. Further, he added that the quake has a small risk level for the occurrence of damage. Carnival of Cultures

BERLIN - Since 1966, the Carnival of Cultures has been celebrated every year on Pentecost weekend in Kreuzberg, Berlin: opulent costumes, powerful makeup, imaginative masks, and decorated hand carts make their way through the streets demonstrating the cultural diversity of Berlin. Over the four-day street festival, there are culinary delicacies and all sorts of items from all over the world on offer. During the Carnival of Cultures, a colourful hustle and bustle is prominent on Blücherplatz: over the multi-day street festival, there are culinary delicacies and all sorts of items from all over the world. From fresh coconuts and sweet potatoes to eccentric accessories, to clothing and hand-made crafts, there is something for every taste at almost 400 stands. On the many stages, you can also hear music from various regions around the world. The highlight of the Carnival of Cultures is the street procession on Pentecost Sunday (mid-May to mid-June) with around 4,700

participants from 80 countries who boldly celebrate the cultural diversity of Berlin with traditional costumes and ritual dances. The caravans begin at noon on Hermannplatz and continue until evening across Hasenheide and Yorckstraße to Möckernstraße. The participating groups represent the cultural diversity of Berlin and are impressive with their elaborate costumes and rehearsed dances. The most original and fantastical performances are awarded by judges. Around one million people attend the Carnival of Cultures every year, thus making the street festival one of Berlin’s largest open air events. Along with the carnival, there are also numerous parties and music events as well as a comprehensive programme for children. The idea for this event came from the workshop of the cultures, which was launched in the multination district Kreuzberg in 1993. The carnival was to be used as an demonstration of peace and colour, the idea of a tolerant and open society. It began in 1996 with 2,000 participants and 50,000 visi-

tors, and soon developed into one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. Nowadays more than 4,000 participants and far more than a million visitors attend the spectacle. Since 2000 the most beautiful displays and costumes are awarded. In addition to the carnival parade through Kreuzberg, a festival on the Bluecherplatz with music from around the world is an integral part of the Carnival of Cultures. The Karneval der Kulturen will therefore take place for the 22nd time from June 2-5, and will reflect again on Berlin’s diversity, with people from more than 180 countries living in the German capital. The highlight of the four-day

festival is the street parade through Berlin’s multicultural district, Kreuzberg, held on June 4. Over 60 participating groups, including samba dancers, drummers and stilt walkers, will be performing. The street festival also boasts over 300 stands with food and art crafts from different cultures. Four stages will be welcoming numerous international bands and DJs. Eight additional “Music Corners”

will offer a stage for more intimate performances. The fall of the Berlin Wall led to an increased internationalization of the city, but also to the emergence of stronger nationalist and racist movements in the 1990s. Tourists can do trekking into the forest or have cycling tour. Along the trekking route starting from Bunut Bolong, tourists cross the path of settlements and plantation of residents. On the track, tourists can encounter a sarcophagus where local people believe that it is efficacious. Water in the sarcophagus is said to be effective for healing. Throughout the forest track, tourists can enjoy lovely views of cliff and lush verdant trees. The track is now developed into a tourist destination and is often used for activities.

In addition to foreign tourists, the track is also introduced to students and the public at large. Chairman of central executive of Hindu youth association (Peradah) of Jembrana, I Komang Kurniawan, strongly supported the introduction of this track in addition to developing regional tourism as well as appreciating the nature (environmental aspect). Not long ago, Peradah also introduced the track by inviting students and communities and the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Jembrana Chapter through Bunut Bolong forest tracking activity. Ketut Naba, one of the local residents, said that the area has now been being arranged. Previously, the ficus tree tunnel passed through by asphalt road for one lane only was actually not perforated, according to local residents. Then, during the Dutch colonial period the tall ficus tree was perforated. At that time, many residents have lived around Manggisari and the Dutch colonial built road access to facilitate the smooth transportation leading the plantations.

At that time, native residents were employed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to help open road access from plantation to nearest harbor. However, the project was hampered by large ficus tree at the temple location. They could not pass because on the left side there is a cliff and a temple in the north side. Finally, it was decided to perforate the ficus tree. At first glance, the hollow in the ficus tree looked small, but actually it can be crossed by a large truck. In terms of spiritual perspective, the tunnel tree is not a tree but a red brick gate. It is just like split gates or apit lawang. Previously, it was flanked by rosewood in the right and left side of the tree. However, now only one tree remains. It is said that if people would like to pass through the ficus tree tunnel, they must ask for permission whether they are pedestrians or vehicles. Not everyone can pass through the tunnel. Naba mentioned if there is an entourage of wedding or death person wishing to pass, it must cross the road next to ficus tree. (olo)

A robber especially targeting foreigners at villa arrested

DENPASAR — A robber especially targeting villas in Ubud with the initials AD, 39, was arrested by Section Head of Escort and Patrol, Sub-Directorate of General Assignment, Directorate of Public Services of Bali Police, I Dewa Nyoman Sudiarsa, at the boarding house on Jalan Gelogor Carik, Gang Selamet, last Wednesday (May 31). AD has long been a fugitive of Ubud police related to robbery cases against three foreigners at three villas. Spokesman of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, accompanied

by Sudiarsa, explained on Friday (Jun 2) that at 07:00 Local Time he was on duty of arranging traffic at the intersection of Jalan Pulau Galang at Gelogor Carik. At that time, a resident living at Taman Sari Residence Denpasar came and informed that the suspect AD stays at his boarding house. “The resident said that formerly AD had been raided by mobile detective unit of Ubud police but managed to escape,” said Sudiarsa. After getting the information, Sudiarsa directly came to the boarding

house. Arriving there, AD immediately escaped to an alley and was immediately chased. Eventually, AD could be arrested at a dead end alley. “The suspect tried to jump over the wall at the end of the alley and but I immediately pulled his leg. So, it immediately made him not move,” he said. In the meantime, Hengky Widjaja added that based on interrogation results, AD admitted to be from Kampung Buyang, Makassar, and a recidivist. In his action, AD claimed to damage the door

Deputy regent criticizes garbage at Gilimanuk Bay NEGARA — The arrangement of Gilimanuk Bay area as a tourist destination becomes a priority this year. Gilimanuk is considered strategic because its position as the main entrance to Bali Island and supported by the natural coastal beauty of Gilimanuk Bay. This arrangement is also required to change the ambience of Gilimanuk showing the characteristics of Bali. Deputy Regent of Jembrana, I Made Kembang Hartawan, led in person on Friday (Jun 2) the direct preparation of development as well as site inspection. He said there are a number of arrangements denoting the measures of the government of Jembrana to conjure up Gilimanuk into a better tourist destination offering the ambience of Bali. One of them is at Gilimanuk Bay with the arrangement of parking lot and merchants. He criticized the management of the Gilimanuk Bay area. After the construction of Shiva Statue Park, he wanted to complete the facility of the area located adjacent with the Gilimanuk Museum by arranging the area of merchant and fence with planter box, lights along the area, toilet facilities, changing rooms and a water tower. In the future, he hoped the management of Gilimanuk Bay under the local tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) can be maximized by more tightly handling the garbage problem as well as the hawkers who are still selling outside. “It needs a synergistic measure between local government and the surrounding communities. Preparedness of the surrounding communities is needed to welcome tourism by maintaining sanitation, public facilities and firm regulation to selling merchants. BANGLI — Dozens of residents at some hamlets in the area behind the Songan Hill, Kintamani, experienced symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting accompanied by diarrhea. Allegedly the residents suffered food poisoning from fermented cassava purchased at a local stall. Until Saturday (Jun 3), there were at least 12 out of 27 residents becoming the poisoning victims that were still undergoing treatment at Kintamani health center V, clinic and Pratama Hospital in Karangasem. As information compiled, the 27 people suffering from poisoning are from six hamlets namely Bukit Tungtung (14 persons), Kendal (1 person), Munduk Lantang (1 person), Bantas (2 persons), Kayu Selem (8 persons) and Balingkang (1 person). They experienced the symptoms of poisoning such as abdominal pain, vomiting, dizziness and diarrhea on Thursday morning (Jun 1). Since the condition was quite alarming, on Thursday morning the 27 residents were rushed to get medical treatment by their families. Of the 27 poisoning victims, they were mostly treated at Pratama Hospital at West Tianyar village, Kubu, Karangasem. In the meantime, some others were treated at Galang Kangin clinic Karangasem and Kintamani health center V at Songan village. Hamlet chief of Kayuselem, Songan B, I Komang Catur Yasa, when asked for his confirmation,

said the 27 people had symptoms of food poisoning after consuming fermented cassava on Wednesday afternoon (May 31). They purchased it from a stall belonging to Ni Kari, a resident at Kayuselem. “Ni Kari who makes this fermented cassava was also rushed to hospital because she is experiencing the same symptoms,” he explained. Catur Yasa claimed not to know exactly what made the fermented cassava of Ni Kari poisonous. To know the exact cause, he claimed to have directly coordinated with the health authority. “We have coordinated with Kintamani public health center V and forward it to health agency. Yesterday there were some health workers coming here to take samples of the fermented cassava and water. The results have not been submitted yet,” he said. In addition to health workers, the health officials were also admitted to have come down to location to

check. He added that some of the 27 residents rushed to hospital have been allowed to go home. Until Saturday afternoon, he got information there were ten residents remaining to be treated at Pratama Hospital, Karangasem, a resident at Galang Kangin clinic and another resident at Kintamani public health center. In the meantime, subdistrict head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, when asked for his confirmation separately also admitted that dozens of residents in the hilly areas experienced the symptoms of poisoning and they were rushed to hospital and public health center to get immediate help and some of them have been allowed to go home. CHICAGO — An Illinois man who typed out emoji and other text messages to advise his cousin thousands of miles away on how to kill a wealthy Chicago woman vacationing in Indonesia was sentenced on Friday to nine years in prison. At Robert Bibbs’ sentencing in Chicago federal court, a prosecutor placed the fruit-stand handle used to bludgeon Sheila von Wiese-Mack at a Bali beach resort by the judge’s bench. Relatives cried later as prosecutors displayed a photograph of the 62-year-old’s body in a suitcase, where her killers stuffed the body. Bibbs, 26, of Chicago, told Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer he’d been depressed in 2014 when his cousin Tommy Schaefer sought guidance on how he and his girlfriend, Heather Mack — Wiese-Mack’s daughter — should commit the murder. For his help, Bibbs hoped for a cut of the mom’s inheritance. “To this day, I don’t recognize the person in those messages,” he said about his texts, standing in court shackled at the ankles. And he added: “I never expected them to do something so horrific.” Judge Pallmeyer scolded Bibbs for describing his advisory role as “a mistake.” “A mistake is leaving your keys in the car,” she told him. “A mistake is not standing by and encouraging an unjustified murder.” Autopsy photos showed to the judge showed Wiese-Mack’s body with deep gashes across her face and wounds on her arms that prosecutors say resulted from her desperate bid to fend off the blows. Within minutes of his cousin texting on Aug. 12, 2014, that the murder was done, Pallmeyer also noted that the

men traded casual messages about NBA basketball news. One of Bibbs’ texts incorporated a “high-five” emoji to indicate he approved of their bid to kill Wiese-Mack, who was a widow of highly regarded jazz and classical composer James L. Mack, who died in 2006. Another time, Bibbs said Schaefer could smother WieseMack, texting: “Go sit on her face wit a pillow.” Bibbs pleaded guilty in December to conspiracy to commit foreign murder of a U.S. citizen, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years. But Bibbs lack of a previous criminal record and other factors meant he wouldn’t face the maximum penalty. Prosecutors had asked for up to 11 years. Indonesian authorities arrested Schaefer, now 24, and Mack, 21, after the bloodied suitcase was found in a taxi. In 2015, a court in Indonesia sentenced Schaefer to 18 years in prison for the murder; Mack received a 10-year term for helping. Wiese-Mack’s youngster sister, Debbi Curran, also spoke at Bibbs’ sentencing. She described how she had searched the internet the day she learned of her sister’s death in Bali — only to see a crime photo online of the suitcase that still contained her sister’s body. “I can’t look at a suitcase (now) without thinking of my sister’s half-naked body ... in a suitcase,” she said. “This will haunt me for the rest of my life.” Bill Wiese told the court about his sister’s love of classical music and opera, and how she supported the arts, including by opening her home to aspiring musicians. “I only wish I could have protected her from this brutal murder,” he said.(ap)

France, India to cooperate in fighting climate change

PARIS - French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday their countries would cooperate in the fight against climate change, just days after the U.S. withdrew from the Paris climate agreement. Modi, whose country is the world’s third-biggest emissions generator, said in Russia on Friday that he would continue to back the deal and Macron has said the 2015 Paris agreement is irreversible despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw. “The protection of the environment and the mother planet is an article of faith,” Modi said at a joint news conference with Macron in Paris. The two leaders, who met for the first time, announced no contracts or new initiatives. “We are both convinced that our countries have to do a lot for the ecological and environmental transition and the fight against global warming,” Macron said, adding that France would go above and beyond its Paris agreement commitments. He said he planned a visit to India before year-end for a first summit of the International Solar Alliance, an initiative launched by New Delhi and Paris during the Paris climate talks. Macron said the alliance will lead to concrete measures in favour of solar energy and commit the companies of both nations. The alliance seeks to mobilise more than a trillion dollars by 2030 and bring together well over 100 solar-rich countries to deliver solar energy to some of the planet’s poorest. KABUL - A series of blasts in Kabul on Saturday killed at least six people at a funeral for one of the victims of clashes between police and protesters a day before. The explosions continued a wave of violence in the capital since a devastating truck bomb on Wednesday and prompted a renewed appeal for calm from the United Nations special envoy to Afghanistan. Authorities had blocked the streets of Kabul in a bid to prevent a repeat of the bloody confrontation between protesters and police on Friday. UN envoy Tadamichi Yamamoto issued a statement calling for “urgent measures to halt the cycle of violence”. “Calm is now called for. Ensuring security in Kabul is an urgent priority, as this city continues to experience the highest number of civilian casualties,” he said. The violence, fuelled by public anger over the inability of President Ashraf Ghani’s divided government to ensure security in Kabul, has exacerbated political tensions between rival factions, and Ghani issued a call for unity. Evil, evil people,” he told the newspaper. “I want to know if this girl is still alive. I’ve been walking around for an hour and a half crying my eyes out. I don’t know what to do.” Medics treated the injured near the market as shocked people cried and shouted around them. Police officers yelled at people to run from the area. Police received the first call of reports of a vehicle hitting pedestrians on London Bridge at 10:08 p.m. (2108 GMT). Soon after, reports started coming in of stabbings at Borough Market, a nearby area full of bars and restaurants surrounding a popular food market. Indonesia, Philippines front wider effort against militants

SINGAPORE — Joint patrols by three Southeast Asian countries in the Sulu Sea may be the start of a larger regional effort to keep Islamic militants at bay, officials said Sunday. The patrols will be conducted by forces from Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, starting with sea operations from June, with air and land patrols starting at a later date. The initiative in the Sulu Sea, an area bounded by the Malaysian state of Sabah and the southern Philippines, is a “collective agreement that is followed by the operational level,” Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said. It will feature joint command posts and exercises between the trio’s ground forces. Joint patrols are an attempt “to prevent and protect our border, to close the border so that militants don’t go to other areas,” Ryamizard said. “If the situation escalates and extends to other waters, we would like to request other countries to join.” Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population. Ryamizard was speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a security conference in Singapore attended by defense ministers and experts from 39 countries. The presence of Islamic militants has been felt the region. Philippine troops are struggling to end a bloody siege by 500 Islamic State group-aligned extremists in the southern city of Marawi, one of the boldest militant attacks in Southeast Asia in years. CARDIFF — After another potent demonstration of Cristiano Ronaldo’s enduring scoring prowess, surely no Real Madrid fan can contemplate criticizing him now. Particularly after the world player of the year ensured Madrid pulled off one of soccer’s hardest feats, becoming the first team to successfully defend their Champions League title. The fans who irritated Ronaldo so much ahead of Saturday’s final due to their whistling were silenced in emphatic style with two goals in a 4-1 victory over Juventus that gave Madrid a record-extending 12th European crown. “People don’t have words to criticize,” Ronaldo said, “because the numbers don’t lie.” They certainly don’t after another incredible season, even at the age of 32. “My age is just a number,” Ronaldo said. “I feel like a young boy.” At the end of the 25th season of the Champions League, Ronaldo is the first player to score in three of the competition’s finals. And having lifted the European Cup once with Manchester United, Ronaldo has done it three times in four seasons with Madrid. It’s the latest piece of silverware in an incredible 12 months for the forward. It began with Ronaldo winning his first title with Portugal at the European Championship. Then came the Club World Cup with Real Madrid and the end of a five-year Spanish title drought before new highs were reached in the Champions League. His career goal tally in club and international soccer now stands at 600. Ronaldo’s first strike at Millennium Stadium was canceled out by Mario Mandzukic’s exquisite 27th-minute hook shot. It was the only high point for Juventus on a night when the Italian champion was outclassed in its quest for a first European title in 21 years. Madrid’s supremacy was clear in the second half. After Casemiro put the Spanish champions back in front in the 61st, Ronaldo turned in the third at the near post inside three minutes, and Marco Asensio wrapped up the scoring in the 90th.
