LOS ANGELES — The Avengers are mighty, but not enough to beat themselves. The Marvel and Disney sequel earned a staggering $187.7 million in its debut weekend, making it the second biggest U.S. opening of all time according to Rentrak estimates Sunday. But “Avengers: Age of Ultron” failed to top the all-time record of the first film’s $207.4 million debut in 2012. Although “Ultron” was the only new film in wide release this weekend, it had some significant small screen competition: The Kentucky Derby, the NBA playoffs, and the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao fight. Numbers could shift by the time Monday actuals roll in, but it seems the robust counter-programming may have blockaded another record for Marvel and Disney. Still, for Disney’s head of distribution Dave Hollis, the weekend was a “spectacular result” for the film, which cost a reported $250 million to produce. Another foreigner’s debit card stolen in Kuta
DENPASAR - Foreign citizens are still having their debit or ATM card stolen in Kuta, despite many perpetrators having already been arrested. For example, 23 year old Kurt Cockburn, from Australia, had his debit card stolen while withdrawing money from an ATM on Jalan Popies 2, Kuta. Based on details from the report of the victim, police arrested the debit card robbers: a 36 year old with the initials I .N.from NTT and 38 year old M.D.S. from Medan, on Wednesday (Apr. 29). “Their modus operandi was a standard practice of pounding on the door of the ATM booth while the victim is withdrawing money. They pretend to want to withdraw money in a hurry, whereas on fact the tactic
is meant to make the victim quickly leave the booth and forget to take their card (debit card—Ed)” said the Chief of Kuta Police, Ida Bagus Dedy Januartha, accompanied by the Chief of Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Dewa Tagel, on Sunday (May 3). Januartha added that at that time, the victim who was staying at Hotel Bali Legian, Kuta, was on his way home from clubbing on Sunday (Aril
27) and was drunk. The victim stopped to withdrew money from Commonwealth Bank ATM booth on Jalan Poppies 2, Kuta. The two hoodlums, managed to scare the victim out of the ATM booth before he could retrieve his card from the machine.. A few minutes later, the victim realized that he had left his card in the ATM machine and immediately returned to the scene to retrieve it. DENPASAR - One afternoon in a corner of Lumintang Urban Park, a group of teenagers are absorbed in playing with a collection of their favorite reptiles. Without feeling disgusted at all, one of them wraps a ball python around his hand and then kisses the head of the slithering reptile affectionately. Another is also proud to showcase the elegance of his iguana, which sits perched on his shoulder as he walks around the area of the jogging track that is always crowded with townspeople. Meanwhile his friends are preoccupied, mingling with a bearded dragon, multi coloured leopard geckos, a blue-tongued skink, monitor lizards, a chameleon and various other exotic reptiles. The names of the exotic reptile are indeed unfamiliar to the general public because most of the pet animals are imported. However, recently some of these exotic reptiles have been successfully bred by reptile lovers that learned how to breed them locally. Some of the reptile lovers who formerly raised a reptile just as a hobby have now ‘increased’ their status by becoming breeders and starting quite lucrative exotic reptile businesses. “Initially, we just raised the reptiles because we were interested in the color of their varied, unique and beautiful faces. Apparently, some of the reptile collections became quite vast, so they became seri-

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Global warming to push 1 in 13 species to extinction
WASHINGTON — Global warming will eventually push 1 out of every 13 species on Earth into extinction, a new study projects. It won’t quite be as bad in North America, where only 1 in 20 species will be killed off because of climate change or Europe where the extinction rate is nearly as small. But in South America, that forecasted heat-caused extinction rate soars to 23 percent, the worst for any continent, according to a new study published Thursday in the journal Science. University of Connecticut ecologist Mark Urban compiled and analyzed 131 peer-reviewed studies on species that used various types of computer simulations and found a general average extinction rate
for the globe: 7.9 percent. That’s an average for all species, all regions, taking into consideration various assumptions about future emission trends of man-made greenhouse gases. The extinction rate calculation doesn’t mean all of those species will be gone; some will just be on an irreversible decline, dwindling toward oblivion, he said. “It’s a sobering result,” Urban said. Urban’s figures are probably underestimating the real rate of species loss a little, said scientists not affiliated with the research. That’s because Urban only looks
at temperature, not other factors like fire or interaction with other animals, and more studies have been done in North America and Europe, where rates are lower, said outside biologists Stuart Pimm of Duke University and Terry Root of Stanford University. The projected extinction rate changes with time and how much warming there is from the burning of coal, oil and gas. At the moment, the extinction rate is relatively low, 2.8 percent, but it rises with more carbon dioxide pollution and warmer temperatures, Urban wrote. By the end of the century, in a worst case scenario if world carbon emission trends continue to rise, 1 in 6 species will be gone or on the road to extinction, Urban said.
MIAMI - Flying people to deep space -- like Mars or an asteroid -- is high on NASA’s wish list, but research on mice suggested Friday that extended radiation exposure permanently harms the brain. Central nervous system damage and cognitive impairments were observed in lab animals that were exposed to highly energetic charged particles -- similar to the galactic cosmic rays that astronauts would encounter during long space flights -- said researchers at the University of California, Irvine.
“This is not positive news for astronauts deployed on a two- to three-year round trip to Mars,” said lead author Charles Limoli, professor of radiation oncology in UCI’s School of Medicine. “Performance decrements, memory deficits, and loss of awareness and focus during spaceflight may affect mission-critical activities, and exposure to these particles may have long-term adverse consequences to cognition throughout life.” Currently, the world’s astronauts rotate in shifts that last about six
months at the International Space Station. In March, US astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko began the first year-long mission at the orbiting research outpost to test the impact of longer spaceflights on the body and mind. NASA is aiming to send people to Mars in the 2030s, but skeptics say the technology is nowhere near ready, nor is it clear that such travel would be safe for people to undertake.
That’s higher than the overall rate because that 7.9 percent rate takes into account some projections that the world will reduce or at least slow carbon dioxide emissions. What happens is that species tend to move closer to the poles and up in elevation as it gets warmer, Urban said. But some species, especially those on mountains such as the American pika, run out of room to move and may die off because there’s no place to escape the heat, Urban said. It’s like being on an ever-shrinking island. Still, Pimm and Urban said the extinction from warming climates is dwarfed by a much higher extinction rate also caused by man: Habitat loss. A large extinction is going on, and for every species dis-
appearing for natural causes, 1,000 are vanishing because of unnatural man-made causes, Pimm said. “I don’t know we’re at the point where we can call it a mass extinction event, but we’re certainly heading that way unless we change direction,” Urban said. A separate study in the same journal looked at 23 million years of marine fossils to determine which water animals have the biggest extinction risk and where. Marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins and seals, have the highest risk. The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, western Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean between Australia and Japan are hotspots for potential extinction, especially those caused by human factors, the study said. The latest research in the journal Science Advances subjected lab rodents to charged particle irradiation for six weeks at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. This fully ionized oxygen and titanium led to brain inflammation, which disrupted the transmission of signals among neurons, said the study. The radiation impaired the brain’s communication network, interfering with the nerve cells’ ability to transmit signals. “Like a bullet, charged particles hit den-
dritic branches and caused them to break off,” said the study. “It’s well known that losing these dendritic branches is linked to cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s and other diseases.” Tests on learning and memory also showed that irradiated mice did poorly and were prone to confusion, compared to normal mice. Similar mental problems could take months to develop in humans, but any mission to Mars would likely take at least a year and a half, and possibly longer. (afp)

190 kg solid medical waste produced daily Hospital’ incinerator overloaded
TABANAN - Every day the Tabanan Hospital produces 190 kg of solid medical waste. Before being disposed, the waste must be processed through high temperature combustion in the incinerator so that it will not harm the environment. The capacity of the hospital’s incinerator is just 100 kg, so that in order to be able to cope with the excess waste, the Tabanan Hospital is being forced to discontinue their cooperation with third parties wanting to use the incinerator. Deputy Director of the Tabanan Hospital Supporting Facilities, I Gusti Ayu Sri Kastariani, explained that initially the Tabanan Hospital was able to process the solid medi-
cal waste of third parties such as private hospitals or clinics that do not have an incinerator. However, now, the Tabanan Hospital is only able to process its own solid medi-
cal waste so they are no longer accepting waste from third parties. Kastariani added the Tabanan Hospital generates 190 kg of solid everyday that includes syringes, infusion tubes, medicine bottles, various body parts and other solid medical waste the is extremely hazardous to and cannot be discharged directly into the environment. Their incinerator, which they have owned since 2010 can only burn 100 kg per incineration, “so, in order to burn each day’s waste, the Tabanan Hospital, ‘s incineration is done twice a
day,” said Kastariani. Restricted human resources and the constraints of the incinerator, mean that the hospital can only activate the incinerator twice a day. “The temperature reaches 1,000 degrees, so the incinerator must cool down in between sessions,” said Kastariani. The incinerator can in fact be used more than twice day, however a lack of manpower poses an obstacle to more burning, so combustion only occurs twice a day. To keep the smoke from the
incinerated waste safe for the environment, the Tabana Hospital conducts quality standard tests twice a year. According to Kastariani, the remians of the combusted materials are disposed in landfill. She admitted that they are currently discussing the possibility of converting the ashes of the medical waste into dish washing ash, with a third party who is looking into this option “but so far, we have not cooperated to that extent. For the time being, the results of the combustion are dumped into landfill,” she said. (kmb24)

GIANYAR - The rain flushing the northern part of Gianyar such as Tegallalang subdistrict caused the land condition unstable. Landslides and collapsed road disrupted traffic at local road section. The landslides occurred at the road section of KedewatanUbud-Keliki, Tegallalang, while at Tagtag hamlet, Taro village, Tegallalang, the road access to Bukian, Payangan, collapsed and almost disconnected. The landslides occurred on the road section of Kedewatan-Keliki around 05:30 a.m on Sunday. Such quite heavy rain made the condition of land unstable at the location. As a result, the revetment of Shanti Parana Villa avalanched along approximately 12 meters as it was not strong enough to hold water pressure. Revetment with the height reaching 10 meters avalanched and buried the road body. No casualties were reported in the incident. As a result of the incident, vehicles could not pass so that congestion was inevitable. The officers of the Gianyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), personnel of the Tegallalang Military Regional Command and police along with the surrounding communities attempted to evacuate so that the traffic could run normally. Division Head II of the BPBD Gianyar, Gede Eka Putra, with permission of the Head of the BPBD Gianyar Anak Agung Oka said that the evacuation of a number of avalanche materials was performed simultaneously and eventually could open up the road access at 10:45 a.m. and cars were able to pass smoothly. As for the remaining avalanche materials in the form of rocks were evacuated or transported on the following day by using heavy equipment from the Public Works Agency. (kmb16)

In addition, the defendant was also sentenced to pay a fine of IDR 1 billion with the condition that if it is not paid, it will be replaced with imprisonment for three months. In this case, the defendant was charged under the Article 132 paragraph (1) in conjunction with
the Article 129 paragraph (a) of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics. As the verdict, the judge stated that the defendant is guilty of attempting or making evil agreement to commit the crime of narcotic drugs and narcotic precursors. French president visits Qatar, deepening ties to Gulf
DOHA, Qatar — French President Francois Hollande, seeking to strengthen political and business ties with the energy-rich Gulf states, arrived in Qatar on Monday at the start of a two-nation trip that will include a visit to neighboring Saudi Arabia. The trip comes as France and other world powers work to finalize a lasting nuclear deal with Iran by the end of June. Saudi Arabia and its Arab Gulf allies fear a deal and the sanctions relief it would bring could further embolden Iran, their regional rival. The centerpiece of Hollande’s visit to Qatar is the signing of a 6.3 billion euro ($7 billion) deal to sell 24 Rafale fighter jets to the natural gas-rich nation. ATHENS, Greece — Police in southern Greece say 26 wild horses have been shot and killed on a remote mountainside, but the motive for the attack remains unclear. The dead horses were first discovered Thursday on rugged slopes of the 2,376-meter (7,795-foot) Mount Cyllene, 140 kilometers (85 miles) southwest of Athens.
Police major Constantine Vragalis of the southern Peloponnese Police directorate told the Associated Press on Monday that 23 horses were found dead and three other horses that were injured also later died. Police said the horses were privately owned but were allowed to roam wild in the region. (ap)

The plans are to be detailed just two months after CEO Steve Easterbrook stepped in to take charge of the world’s biggest hamburger chain. McDonald’s is fighting intensifying competition from a variety of players and has admitted that it failed to keep up with changing tastes. In its flagship U.S. market, executives said the menu got too complicated and gummed up operations. Customer visits at established locations declined for two straight years. Already, McDonald’s has tried a number of moves to inject some life back into its brand. Back in December, it said it would start trimming its menu to simplify operations and make room for new offerings. The nips and tucks in the past couple months targeted minor sandwich variations. More recently, the company revamped its grilled chicken recipe and said it would curb the use of antibiotics. The company also said last month that it would
double its planned restaurant closures this year to roughly 700. It hasn’t yet revealed its updated plans on overall restaurant count growth. At the end of last year, McDonald’s Corp. had more than 36,200 locations around the world. According to local legend, the word sawe originating from the word sawa or soul refers to Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa, the former ruler of Perancak. So far, within the area of Perancak Temple stands a memorial chamber shrine used to venerate the descendants of Ngurah Rangsasa. Additionally, at the temple entrance of Perancak is set a pair of crocodile statue on the stairs. According to Jro Mangku Sadra who has been in service for 40 years, the statue described the situation of Perancak estuary at that time where the swamp area was still filled with dozens of crocodiles. When traveling in Bali, you do not need to be confused to get a meal or just a snack. The community of Bali Island is rich in culinary tradition, including various fresh cakes. Even, the cakes produced are eco-friendly because the ingredients and coloring agent in use are obtained from organic plants. One of them is the lukis cake. This traditional cake tastes sweet, sticky and chewy. It resembles to small triangle in greenish color. When being served, it presented with grated coconut and brown sugar. It will be going more appropriate if enjoyed with coffee or tea. This kind of cake is not easy to get. Aside from being difficult to find its ingredients, the making is also quite complicated. However, the food stalls at villages, traditional markets, pastry shops and some supermarkets are selling it. Uniquely, in the cake shop and supermarket this lukis cake has been packaged neatly, unlike in the stalls as it is presented manually to make it look really fresh. The lukis cake makes use of
ingredients like sticky rice. By and large, it is then mixed with black sticky rice that has an interesting texture. The other ingredients comprise the grated coconut, salt and Balinese palm sugar (brown sugar). To make it, the black sticky rice is soaked for some 15 minutes. Furthermore, it is drained and filled with salt so that it will not be tasteless. After that, take a spoon of the batter and wrap in green and clean banana leaf. Wrap it tightly, so the results will be sticky and not watery. Boil them for approximately 2 hours (do as boiling rice bag). Further, take them out and drain. To make sure whether the sticky rice has been cooked or not, test it by piercing with a pin (palm leaf rib). If it has been hard, simply take them out and drain. Wait for a while until turning cooler and then serve them. To serve them, unwrap the leaf first and place on the even serving leaf. Then, sprinkle them with shredded coconut containing salt. As the finishing step, sprinkle all the cakes with brown sugar. (kmb)

Inflation accelerates on fuel prices
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s inflation accelerated to 6.79 percent in April spurred by higher fuel costs after global oil prices rebounded, official data showed Monday. The year-on-year consumer price index rose from 6.38 percent in March, the statistics agency said. At the start of the year, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy almost completely abolished a decades-old
fuel subsidy regime -- which had proven to be extremely costly -- and let prices float with the market. The decision came at a time when oil prices had fallen dramatically, and prompted steep drops in
the price of fuel and a slowdown in inflation. However, global oil prices rebounded by about 20 percent in April owing to several factors, including concerns about unrest in
Yemen, the weakening dollar and fewer US rigs in operation. Pump prices in Indonesia rose, as did the price of public transport. “The biggest contributor to inflation is the petrol price,” said statistics agency chief Suryamin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

GARLAND, Texas — Two gunmen were killed after opening fire on a security officer outside a contest for cartoon depictions of Prophet Muhammad and a bomb squad was called in to search their vehicle as a precaution, authorities said. The men drove up Sunday night as the contest in suburban Dallas was scheduled to end and began shooting at a security officer, the City of Garland said in a statement. Police officers returned fire, killing the men. “Because of the situation of what was going on today and the history of what we’ve been told has happened at other events like this, we are considering their car (is) possibly containing a bomb,” Officer Joe Harn, a spokesman for the Garland Police Department, said at a news conference.
Police aren’t aware of any ongoing threat and had not received any credible threats before the event, Harn said. Harn said it was not immediately clear whether the shooting was connected to the event inside, a contest hosted by the New Yorkbased American Freedom Defense Initiative that would award $10,000 for the best cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Such drawings are deemed insulting to many followers of Islam and have sparked violence around the world. According to mainstream
Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad — even a respectful one — is considered blasphemous. In January, 12 people were killed by gunmen in an attack against the Paris office of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had lampooned Islam and other religions and used depictions of Muhammad. Another deadly shooting occurred the following month at a free speech event in Copenhagen featuring an artist who had caricatured the prophet. The Curtis Culwell Center,
a school district-owned public events space, was evacuated earlier Sunday, as were some surrounding businesses. Police blocked off a large area around the center Sunday night. There was a heavy police presence, and police helicopters circled overhead as bomb squads worked on the car. Authorities haven’t removed the bodies of the gunmen, who have not yet been identified, Harn said. The bodies are too close to the car to be removed, but that will happen once the scene is clear, he said. I could be taken tomorrow from my

President vows to improve health service for “KIS” holders
SLEMAN - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has promised to improve health services for the holders of Healthy Indonesia Cards (KIS). “Some of the health services have not been good, and I am not going to turn a blind eye to it,” the president stated while distributing KIS, Welfare Indonesia Cards (KKS), and Smart Indonesia Cards (KIP) in Sleman district, Central Java, on Monday. President Jokowi pointed out that there were still several hospitals whose doctors and nurses had failed to provide good and friendly services to the patients of KIS holders. Therefore, he encouraged the people, who received poor services at the hospital, to report the matter to the government through the health minister. “Patients with KIS who receive poor services from a hospital are expected to report it to the health minister, and if needed, report it directly to me,” President Jokowi affirmed. The head of state remarked that he will cancel the license of any hospitals refusing to treat the patients of KIS holders. The KIS can be used by impoverished members of the community for availing hospital treatment to be borne by the government. “Currently, not all hospitals, but only government-owned hospitals are accepting KIS. I will ensure that all will accept KIS,” Jokowi emphasized. The president distributed KIS, KIP, and KKS to community leaders in the village of Temuwangi, regency of Klaten, Central Java. He remarked that no ailing members of the community should be declined access to medical treatment. The president, however, noted that the patients should first seek treatment at public health centers (Puskesmas), which will decide if they will need further treatments at hospitals. In the East, Bradley Beal shook off a sprained ankle to score 28 points as Washington knocked off top-seeded Atlanta 104-98 in Game 1 of their series. LONDON — The five-year drought is over. Chelsea is Premier League champion again — to Stamford Bridge in 2013. During Mourinho’s six year-abwith three games to spare. LONDON — The five-year drought is over. Chelsea is Premier League champion again — to Stamford Bridge in 2013. During Mourinho’s six year-abwith three games to spare. Warriors, Wizards remain unbeaten in NBA playoffs OAKLAND, California — Stephen Curry burnished his NBA Most Valuable Player credentials by scoring 22 points and adding seven assists to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 101-86 win over the undermanned Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals on Sunday. In the East, Bradley Beal shook off a sprained ankle to score 28 points as Washington knocked off top-seeded Atlanta 104-98 in Game 1 of their series. After the Warriors rolled to victory, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that Curry has won the Most Valuable Player award for the season. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not released the voting results. An official announcement is expected Monday, and Curry will be presented with the award on the court before Game 2 on Tuesday. Curry pushed the pace from start to finish, and the Grizzlies never could slow Golden State down. The Warriors went ahead by 16 in the second quarter, and Curry kept the pressure after Memphis moved within seven. Asked about the MVP award following the game, Curry said he had no idea he had won. “Obviously, I know what the situation is, and just trying to focus on the game, and if I get a call (Monday), I’ll definitely be happy, and there will be a lot of people that can be proud of that moment, as well, and we’ll enjoy it,” he said.

Inflation accelerates on fuel prices
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s inflation accelerated to 6.79 percent in April spurred by higher fuel costs after global oil prices rebounded, official data showed Monday. The year-on-year consumer price index rose from 6.38 percent in March, the statistics agency said. At the start of the year, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy almost completely abolished a decades-old
fuel subsidy regime -- which had proven to be extremely costly -- and let prices float with the market. The decision came at a time when oil prices had fallen dramatically, and prompted steep drops in
the price of fuel and a slowdown in inflation. However, global oil prices rebounded by about 20 percent in April owing to several factors, including concerns about unrest in
Yemen, the weakening dollar and fewer US rigs in operation. Pump prices in Indonesia rose, as did the price of public transport. “The biggest contributor to inflation is the petrol price,” said statistics agency chief Suryamin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.
Slowing inflation in February prompted the central bank to cut its key rate by 25 basis points, to 7.50 percent, as it sought to boost growth which has sunk to a five-year low. However the move caused the rupiah to plunge, and the bank has maintained the rate at the same level since. (afp)

GARLAND, Texas — Two gunmen were killed after opening fire on a security officer outside a contest for cartoon depictions of Prophet Muhammad and a bomb squad was called in to search their vehicle as a precaution, authorities said. The men drove up Sunday night as the contest in suburban Dallas was scheduled to end and began shooting at a security officer, the City of Garland said in a statement. Police officers returned fire, killing the men. “Because of the situation of what was going on today and the history of what we’ve been told has happened at other events like this, we are considering their car (is) possibly containing a bomb,” Officer Joe Harn, a spokesman for the Garland Police Department, said at a news conference.
Police aren’t aware of any ongoing threat and had not received any credible threats before the event, Harn said. Harn said it was not immediately clear whether the shooting was connected to the event inside, a contest hosted by the New Yorkbased American Freedom Defense Initiative that would award $10,000 for the best cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Such drawings are deemed insulting to many followers of Islam and have sparked violence around the world. According to mainstream
Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad — even a respectful one — is considered blasphemous. In January, 12 people were killed by gunmen in an attack against the Paris office of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had lampooned Islam and other religions and used depictions of Muhammad. a school district-owned public events space, was evacuated earlier Sunday, as were some surrounding businesses. Police blocked off a large area around the center Sunday night. SLEMAN - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has promised to improve health services for the holders of Healthy Indonesia Cards (KIS). “Some of the health services have not been good, and I am not going to turn a blind eye to it,” the president stated while distributing KIS, Welfare Indonesia Cards (KKS), and Smart Indonesia Cards (KIP) in Sleman district, Central Java, on Monday. President Jokowi pointed out that there were still several hospitals whose doctors and nurses had failed to provide good and friendly services to the patients of KIS holders. Therefore, he encouraged the people, who received poor services at the hospital, to report the matter to the government through the health minister. “Patients with KIS who receive poor services from a hospital are expected to report it to the health minister, and if needed, report it directly to me,” President Jokowi affirmed. The head of state remarked that he will cancel the license of any hospitals refusing to treat the patients of KIS holders. The KIS can be used by impoverished members of the community for availing hospital treatment to be borne by the government. “Currently, not all hospitals, but only government-owned hospitals are accepting KIS. I will ensure that all will accept KIS,” Jokowi emphasized. The president distributed KIS, KIP, and KKS to community leaders in the village of Temuwangi, regency of Klaten, Central Java. The plans are to be detailed just two months after CEO Steve Easterbrook stepped in to take charge of the world’s biggest hamburger chain. McDonald’s is fighting intensifying competition from a variety of players and has admitted that it failed to keep up with changing tastes. In its flagship U.S. market, executives said the menu got too complicated and gummed up operations. Customer visits at established locations declined for two straight years. Already, McDonald’s has tried a number of moves to inject some life back into its brand. Back in December, it said it would start trimming its menu to simplify operations and make room for new offerings. The nips and tucks in the past couple months targeted minor sandwich variations. More recently, the company revamped its grilled chicken recipe and said it would curb the use of antibiotics. The company also said last month that it would
double its planned restaurant closures this year to roughly 700. It hasn’t yet revealed its updated plans on overall restaurant count growth. At the end of last year, McDonald’s Corp. had more than 36,200 locations around the world. Due to his presence there, local people then named the area Sawe Rangsasa. According to local legend, the word sawe originating from the word sawa or soul refers to Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa, the former ruler of Perancak. So far, within the area of Perancak Temple stands a memorial chamber shrine used to venerate the descendants of Ngurah Rangsasa. Additionally, at the temple entrance of Perancak is set a pair of crocodile statue on the stairs. According to Jro Mangku Sadra who has been in service for 40 years, the statue described the situation of Perancak estuary at that time where the swamp area was still filled with dozens of crocodiles. When traveling in Bali, you do not need to be confused to get a meal or just a snack. The community of Bali Island is rich in culinary tradition, including various fresh cakes. Even, the cakes produced are eco-friendly because the ingredients and coloring agent in use are obtained from organic plants. One of them is the lukis cake. This traditional cake tastes sweet, sticky and chewy. It resembles to small triangle in greenish color. When being served, it presented with grated coconut and brown sugar. It will be going more appropriate if enjoyed with coffee or tea. This kind of cake is not easy to get. Aside from being difficult to find its ingredients, the making is also quite complicated. However, the food stalls at villages, traditional markets, pastry shops and some supermarkets are selling it. Uniquely, in the cake shop and supermarket this lukis cake has been packaged neatly, unlike in the stalls as it is presented manually to make it look really fresh. The lukis cake makes use of
ingredients like sticky rice. By and large, it is then mixed with black sticky rice that has an interesting texture. The other ingredients comprise the grated coconut, salt and Balinese palm sugar (brown sugar). To make it, the black sticky rice is soaked for some 15 minutes. Furthermore, it is drained and filled with salt so that it will not be tasteless. After that, take a spoon of the batter and wrap in green and clean banana leaf. Wrap it tightly, so the results will be sticky and not watery. Boil them for approximately 2 hours (do as boiling rice bag). Further, take them out and drain. To make sure whether the sticky rice has been cooked or not, test it by piercing with a pin (palm leaf rib). If it has been hard, simply take them out and drain. Wait for a while until turning cooler and then serve them. To serve them, unwrap the leaf first and place on the even serving leaf. Then, sprinkle them with shredded coconut containing salt. As the finishing step, sprinkle all the cakes with brown sugar. (kmb)

190 kg solid medical waste produced daily Hospital’ incinerator overloaded
TABANAN - Every day the Tabanan Hospital produces 190 kg of solid medical waste. Before being disposed, the waste must be processed through high temperature combustion in the incinerator so that it will not harm the environment. The capacity of the hospital’s incinerator is just 100 kg, so that in order to be able to cope with the excess waste, the Tabanan Hospital is being forced to discontinue their cooperation with third parties wanting to use the incinerator. Deputy Director of the Tabanan Hospital Supporting Facilities, I Gusti Ayu Sri Kastariani, explained that initially the Tabanan Hospital was able to process the solid medi-
cal waste of third parties such as private hospitals or clinics that do not have an incinerator. However, now, the Tabanan Hospital is only able to process its own solid medi-
cal waste so they are no longer accepting waste from third parties. Kastariani added the Tabanan Hospital generates 190 kg of solid everyday that includes syringes, infusion tubes, medicine bottles, various body parts and other solid medical waste the is extremely hazardous to and cannot be discharged directly into the environment. Their incinerator, which they have owned since 2010 can only burn 100 kg per incineration, “so, in order to burn each day’s waste, the Tabanan Hospital, ‘s incineration is done twice a
day,” said Kastariani. Restricted human resources and the constraints of the incinerator, mean that the hospital can only activate the incinerator twice a day. “The temperature reaches 1,000 degrees, so the incinerator must cool down in between sessions,” said Kastariani. The incinerator can in fact be used more than twice day, however a lack of manpower poses an obstacle to more burning, so combustion only occurs twice a day. To keep the smoke from the
incinerated waste safe for the environment, the Tabana Hospital conducts quality standard tests twice a year. According to Kastariani, the remians of the combusted materials are disposed in landfill. She admitted that they are currently discussing the possibility of converting the ashes of the medical waste into dish washing ash, with a third party who is looking into this option “but so far, we have not cooperated to that extent. For the time being, the results of the combustion are dumped into landfill,” she said. (kmb24)

The landslides occurred at the road section of KedewatanUbud-Keliki, Tegallalang, while at Tagtag hamlet, Taro village, Tegallalang, the road access to Bukian, Payangan, collapsed and almost disconnected. The landslides occurred on the road section of Kedewatan-Keliki around 05:30 a.m on Sunday. Such quite heavy rain made the condition of land unstable at the location. As a result, the revetment of Shanti Parana Villa avalanched along approximately 12 meters as it was not strong enough to hold water pressure. Revetment with the height reaching 10 meters avalanched and buried the road body. No casualties were reported in the incident. As a result of the incident, vehicles could not pass so that congestion was inevitable. The officers of the Gianyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), personnel of the Tegallalang Military Regional Command and police along with the surrounding communities attempted to evacuate so that the traffic could run normally. Division Head II of the BPBD Gianyar, Gede Eka Putra, with permission of the Head of the BPBD Gianyar Anak Agung Oka said that the evacuation of a number of avalanche materials was performed simultaneously and eventually could open up the road access at 10:45 a.m. and cars were able to pass smoothly. As for the remaining avalanche materials in the form of rocks were evacuated or transported on the following day by using heavy equipment from the Public Works Agency. (kmb16)

In the trial in the Denpasar District Court, the judge declared that the defendant was proven legally and convincingly
to have committed narcotic crime. Dion was then sentenced to prison for nine years and ten months. In addition, the defendant was also sentenced to pay a fine of IDR 1 billion with the condition that if it is not paid, it will be replaced with imprisonment for three months. In this case, the defendant was charged under the Article 132 paragraph (1) in conjunction with
the Article 129 paragraph (a) of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics. As the verdict, the judge stated that the defendant is guilty of attempting or making evil agreement to commit the crime of narcotic drugs and narcotic precursors. ATHENS, Greece — Police in southern Greece say 26 wild horses have been shot and killed on a remote mountainside, but the motive for the attack remains unclear. The dead horses were first discovered Thursday on rugged slopes of the 2,376-meter (7,795-foot) Mount Cyllene, 140 kilometers (85 miles) southwest of Athens.
Police major Constantine Vragalis of the southern Peloponnese Police directorate told the Associated Press on Monday that 23 horses were found dead and three other horses that were injured also later died. Police said the horses were privately owned but were allowed to roam wild in the region. (ap)
North Korea had never confirmed Kim would go. After Moscow announced last week that Kim had declined the invitation, North Korea said through its state-run media on Monday that Kim Yong Nam, the head of the presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, would attend. Kim Yong Nam is a senior statesman who often represents the country at international or diplomatic events. The brief North Korean announcement made no mention of an invitation to leader Kim. But Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told The Associated Press that “internal matters” were preventing him from leaving North Korea. Global warming to push 1 in 13 species to extinction
WASHINGTON — Global warming will eventually push 1 out of every 13 species on Earth into extinction, a new study projects. It won’t quite be as bad in North America, where only 1 in 20 species will be killed off because of climate change or Europe where the extinction rate is nearly as small. But in South America, that forecasted heat-caused extinction rate soars to 23 percent, the worst for any continent, according to a new study published Thursday in the journal Science. University of Connecticut ecologist Mark Urban compiled and analyzed 131 peer-reviewed studies on species that used various types of computer simulations and found a general average extinction rate
for the globe: 7.9 percent. That’s an average for all species, all regions, taking into consideration various assumptions about future emission trends of man-made greenhouse gases. The extinction rate calculation doesn’t mean all of those species will be gone; some will just be on an irreversible decline, dwindling toward oblivion, he said. “It’s a sobering result,” Urban said. Urban’s figures are probably underestimating the real rate of species loss a little, said scientists not affiliated with the research. That’s because Urban only looks
at temperature, not other factors like fire or interaction with other animals, and more studies have been done in North America and Europe, where rates are lower, said outside biologists Stuart Pimm of Duke University and Terry Root of Stanford University. The projected extinction rate changes with time and how much warming there is from the burning of coal, oil and gas. At the moment, the extinction rate is relatively low, 2.8 percent, but it rises with more carbon dioxide pollution and warmer temperatures, Urban wrote. By the end of the century, in a worst case scenario if world carbon emission trends continue to rise, 1 in 6 species will be gone or on the road to extinction, Urban said.
MIAMI - Flying people to deep space -- like Mars or an asteroid -- is high on NASA’s wish list, but research on mice suggested Friday that extended radiation exposure permanently harms the brain. Central nervous system damage and cognitive impairments were observed in lab animals that were exposed to highly energetic charged particles -- similar to the galactic cosmic rays that astronauts would encounter during long space flights -- said researchers at the University of California, Irvine.
“This is not positive news for astronauts deployed on a two- to three-year round trip to Mars,” said lead author Charles Limoli, professor of radiation oncology in UCI’s School of Medicine. “Performance decrements, memory deficits, and loss of awareness and focus during spaceflight may affect mission-critical activities, and exposure to these particles may have long-term adverse consequences to cognition throughout life.” Currently, the world’s astronauts rotate in shifts that last about six
months at the International Space Station. In March, US astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko began the first year-long mission at the orbiting research outpost to test the impact of longer spaceflights on the body and mind. NASA is aiming to send people to Mars in the 2030s, but skeptics say the technology is nowhere near ready, nor is it clear that such travel would be safe for people to undertake.
That’s higher than the overall rate because that 7.9 percent rate takes into account some projections that the world will reduce or at least slow carbon dioxide emissions. What happens is that species tend to move closer to the poles and up in elevation as it gets warmer, Urban said. But some species, especially those on mountains such as the American pika, run out of room to move and may die off because there’s no place to escape the heat, Urban said. It’s like being on an ever-shrinking island. Still, Pimm and Urban said the extinction from warming climates is dwarfed by a much higher extinction rate also caused by man: Habitat loss. A large extinction is going on, and for every species dis-
appearing for natural causes, 1,000 are vanishing because of unnatural man-made causes, Pimm said. “I don’t know we’re at the point where we can call it a mass extinction event, but we’re certainly heading that way unless we change direction,” Urban said. A separate study in the same journal looked at 23 million years of marine fossils to determine which water animals have the biggest extinction risk and where. Marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins and seals, have the highest risk. The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, western Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean between Australia and Japan are hotspots for potential extinction, especially those caused by human factors, the study said. The latest research in the journal Science Advances subjected lab rodents to charged particle irradiation for six weeks at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. This fully ionized oxygen and titanium led to brain inflammation, which disrupted the transmission of signals among neurons, said the study. The radiation impaired the brain’s communication network, interfering with the nerve cells’ ability to transmit signals. “Like a bullet, charged particles hit den-
dritic branches and caused them to break off,” said the study. “It’s well known that losing these dendritic branches is linked to cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s and other diseases.” Tests on learning and memory also showed that irradiated mice did poorly and were prone to confusion, compared to normal mice. Similar mental problems could take months to develop in humans, but any mission to Mars would likely take at least a year and a half, and possibly longer. (afp)
The potential to develop this village into a nature tourism site looks promising, thought the safety of visitors still needs to be considered. According to the Head of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Gede Suyasa, the project would require the cooperation of the residents of Sudaji village and field studies still need to be conducted to assess the feasibility of creating a swimming pond and trekking path. Considering the fact that other nature tourism sites in Buleleng have seen tourists become severely injured, safety is at the top of the list of things to address. “We have to see whether the village is suitable as a tourist destination, particularly in terms of safety given that there have been some fatalities in Buleleng
recently. These incidents should serve as a reference for future projects,” said Suyasa on Sunday (May. 3). The beautiful natural surroundings of Sudaji village have yet to live up to their potential as a tourist destination simply for lack of attention. Suyasa added that coordination with the Government of Bali Tourism Office will be made regarding the various proposals for water tourism destinations, that different communities have drafted. “Sudaji village has naturally beautiful features enhanced by the forest and plantations there. He said that it is the first such ritual held in Tabanan. “Although the PDDS Tabanan was only established a month ago, they have managed to come up with this breakthrough concept, intended to purify the mind and heart,” he said. Appreciation for the eagerness of the participants, mostly consisting of junior high and high school students was also expressed, for their willingness to follow this early morning ritual. On Monday (May 4) we have the holy day known as Soma Ribek, which is a chance for us to fill ourselves with various kinds of knowledge. Then, Pagerwesi on Wednesday (May 6) which is an opportunity for us to fortify ourselves,” he said. Another foreigner’s debit card stolen in Kuta
DENPASAR - Foreign citizens are still having their debit or ATM card stolen in Kuta, despite many perpetrators having already been arrested. For example, 23 year old Kurt Cockburn, from Australia, had his debit card stolen while withdrawing money from an ATM on Jalan Popies 2, Kuta. Based on details from the report of the victim, police arrested the debit card robbers: a 36 year old with the initials I .N.from NTT and 38 year old M.D.S. from Medan, on Wednesday (Apr. 29). “Their modus operandi was a standard practice of pounding on the door of the ATM booth while the victim is withdrawing money. They pretend to want to withdraw money in a hurry, whereas on fact the tactic
is meant to make the victim quickly leave the booth and forget to take their card (debit card—Ed)” said the Chief of Kuta Police, Ida Bagus Dedy Januartha, accompanied by the Chief of Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Dewa Tagel, on Sunday (May 3). Januartha added that at that time, the victim who was staying at Hotel Bali Legian, Kuta, was on his way home from clubbing on Sunday (Aril
27) and was drunk. The victim stopped to withdrew money from Commonwealth Bank ATM booth on Jalan Poppies 2, Kuta. The two hoodlums, managed to scare the victim out of the ATM booth before he could retrieve his card from the machine.. A few minutes later, the victim realized that he had left his card in the ATM machine and immediately returned to the scene to retrieve it. Unfortunately, the card was gone, so he reported it to the Kuta Police station. DENPASAR - One afternoon in a corner of Lumintang Urban Park, a group of teenagers are absorbed in playing with a collection of their favorite reptiles. Without feeling disgusted at all, one of them wraps a ball python around his hand and then kisses the head of the slithering reptile affectionately. Another is also proud to showcase the elegance of his iguana, which sits perched on his shoulder as he walks around the area of the jogging track that is always crowded with townspeople. Meanwhile his friends are preoccupied, mingling with a bearded dragon, multi coloured leopard geckos, a blue-tongued skink, monitor lizards, a chameleon and various other exotic reptiles. The names of the exotic reptile are indeed unfamiliar to the general public because most of the pet animals are imported. However, recently some of these exotic reptiles have been successfully bred by reptile lovers that learned how to breed them locally. Some of the reptile lovers who formerly raised a reptile just as a hobby have now ‘increased’ their status by becoming breeders and starting quite lucrative exotic reptile businesses. “Initially, we just raised the reptiles because we were interested in the color of their varied, unique and beautiful faces. Apparently, some of the reptile collections became quite vast, so they became seri-
ously interested in breeding,” said Doddy Samboja, one of the reptile collectors. Doddy Samboja said he raises various species of reptiles at home including a ball python, a corn snake, iguanas, bearded dragona, leopard geckoa, various types of turtles and chameleona. Doddy says he has focused on breeding leopard geckos because they are easy to handle, have a high success rate
in terms of breeding, are relatively affordable to maintain and most importantly because the demand for them is booming so they are not difficult to market. “At home, I am breeding approximately 20 pairs of leopard gecko with a variety of colors and patterns -among hobbyists this is commonly known as morph. Then, I sell the results of the breeding. The marketing is not complicated, it is done online,”

In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The Marvel and Disney sequel earned a staggering $187.7 million in its debut weekend, making it the second biggest U.S. opening of all time according to Rentrak estimates Sunday. But “Avengers: Age of Ultron” failed to top the all-time record of the first film’s $207.4 million debut in 2012. Although “Ultron” was the only new film in wide release this weekend, it had some significant small screen competition: The Kentucky Derby, the NBA playoffs, and the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao fight. Numbers could shift by the time Monday actuals roll in, but it seems the robust counter-programming may have blockaded another record for Marvel and Disney. Still, for Disney’s head of distribution Dave Hollis, the weekend was a “spectacular result” for the film, which cost a reported $250 million to produce.
