Author: Courtney Love, not Kurt Cobain, wrote note Associated Press Writer

SEATTLE — One of the foremost experts on Kurt Cobain said the late grunge rocker did not pen a note mocking his wedding vows to fellow musician Courtney Love.

Love herself wrote it, said Seattle author Charles R. Cross, who has written several books on Cobain, including the biography “Heavier Than Heaven.” Cross said Love emailed him to say that she wrote the note and that she gave it to Cobain before their wedding in 1991. “Early in their relationship, they wrote notes like that to each other constantly,” Cross said. “The handwriting is absolutely Courtney’s.” Police found the note in Cobain’s wallet after he killed himself in 1994. It received a lot of media attention last week after CBS News published it, saying it was presumably written by Cobain and that it was sure to stoke questions about what role his marriage played in his death. The note references Love as Cobain’s “lawful shredded wife” who would be “siphoning” his money for drugs. “The note was promoted as Kurt mocking their wedding vows three years after they were married. It just doesn’t make any sense,” Cross said. Cross said the couple often wrote each other such sarcastic notes. Cobain’s body was discovered in Seattle on April 8, 1994. An investigation determined that days

earlier Cobain had gone into the greenhouse of his home and taken a massive dose of heroin. He then shot himself with a 20-gauge shotgun. Earlier this year, in advance of the 20th anniversary of Cobain’s suicide, a Seattle detective reviewed the case files, including evidence photos and statements. He found no new information to change the police conclusion that Cobain took his own life. Cobain, who was 27 when he died, sold millions of albums with Nirvana and helped popularize the Pacific Northwest’s heavy, muddy “grunge” rock. Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month.

NEW YORK — GLAAD celebrates “Orange Is the New Black.” The Netflix show set in a women’s prison was named outstanding comedy series at the 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards’ New York ceremony. Cast members — including Laverne Cox, who won her own GLAAD honor at the organization’s Los Angeles awards ceremony last month — accepted the award Saturday at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. George Takei received the Vito Russo award, presented to an openly gay media professional for promoting equality for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Other winners Saturday included the films “Concussion” and “Philomena” and Oprah Winfrey’s interview with openly gay professional basketball player Jason Collins. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize fair, accurate and inclusive representation in media of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives.

According to Chief of Denpasar’s Naval Base, Col. Julius Widjojono, the increases of routine patrol are step up to secure the OGP meeting. “We have increased our routine patrol among others in the sea area around the airport,” said Widjojono after taking part in a patrol on Sunday, as quoted from Antara. Using two rubber boats and two jetskis some navy soldiers led by Col Julius scoured the waters

He said the area near the airport is vulnerable to infiltrators and so it has been given a special security attention. “Several sea areas are close to where planes land and take off and therefore are vulnerable,” he said. He said he had asked fishermen to stay away from the area and in-

form the security authorities in case they saw suspicious activities. “We have informed fishermen in Kedonganan, Celukan Bawang, Gilimanuk and Serangan to support us in assuring security,” he said. He said the navy base has deployed 200 of its personnel to carry out patrol activities. Two naval warships namely KRI Tongkol and KRI Sawalku have stood by at the Benoa seaport to conduct patrol. OGP Meeting Indonesia has been appointed to host the Open Government Partnership Asia Pacific Regional Conference on May 6-7, 2014 in Nusa Dua, Bali, with Mexico as the

program’s co-chair. Open Government Partnership is a program that was established in September 2011, aiming to promote development of governmental openness in accordance with aspirations and commitment of its member countries. Indonesia was one of the eight pioneering countries besides Brazil, Mexico, Norway, the Philippines, South Africa, Britain and the United States of America. The conference is scheduled to be attended by a number of heads of state and ministers of the program’s member countries in the Asia Pacific, multilateral organizations, academicians, youth and the mass media. Indonesia’s involvement in the

program is a pledge to establish three pillars of implementing the democratic governance namely transparency, public participation and accountability. According to the Presidential Work Unit for Development Control and Monitoring (UKP4) press release received here Tuesday that Indonesia realizes that openness is fundamental for a modern governance, it is a key to open all potentials. Solving congestion in Ubud remains in a study Bali Post

GIANYAR - Transportation problems in Ubud tourist area having occurred through generations in the leadership of the Gianyar government remain unable to yield a definite policy as guidelines in dealing with the congestion. Alteration of the regent and the head of the transportation agency with their policies were still unable to resolve the congestion problem in Ubud. Even, the programs made did not last long. On Saturday (May 3), in an effort to overcome the traffic congestion and crowdedness in the Ubud area, the Gianyar government brought in again a Traffic Program Assessment Team from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in the main meeting room of the office of the regent of Gianyar. The arrival of the ITB team was intended to resolve the traffic problems in the Ubud area. Regent Agung Bharata expected the study of the ITB team would be able to immediately find a solution to traffic problems in the tourism area of Ubud. Thus, by finding the solution to the problem, Ubud was expected to remain a leading tourist destination for domestic and foreign travelers. Team Leader of the ITB Traffic Study Program, Dr. Bambang Kesowo, said the intensity and the rapid growth of tourism activities in the Ubud area could increase the tourist attraction. Mixing movements, particularly between local and regional movements and high volume in a particular pathway, could lead to the emergence of a variety of transportation issues where in the long-term could also diminish the attractiveness of the Ubud tourist area itself. A lecturer from the Udayana University, Prof. I Gusti Made Sutjaya, saw there had been a contact between the customs of the Balinese with foreign travelers. One of which was the free sex ending in the HIV/AIDS. This contact occurred smoothly because there was no preventive effort by

relevant parties, especially the government. “The government has central role in this regard, but does not so heavily make the prevention such as by condom use, provision of an understanding on the consequences of casual sex or sexual harassment. It is not too aggressively carried out,” he said when contacted. According to Sutjaya, the government was like a fire fighter. When the HIV/AIDS had already occurred, it just did something to ad-

dress it. As a result, when the HIV/ AIDS cases were soaring, the government was finally overwhelmed to handle it. “What happening is like a fire fighter that just responds when it already happened,” he said. Sutjaya added, the issue of HIV/AIDS could not be resolved if it was only burdened to the government, especially the Health Agency. Related parties such as NGOs, education sector, including the family, should also be asked to actively prevent the spread

of HIV/AIDS. “I think the family must anticipate it first, by giving the attention and supervision when having teenagers and the possibility of contact with strangers. It was intended to prevent them from falling on the HIV/AIDS,” he explained. On the other hand, Sutjaya presented a number of factors that caused people to be ultimately positive for HIV/AIDS. Healthy fun walk IBP

JAKARTA - On April 27th 2014, Archipelago International and the famous favehotel brand gathered hundreds of people at the Bunderan HI monument to begin a “Fun Walk” in aid of Jakarta’s weekly program, Car-Free Day. Car-Free Day encourages motorists in the vicinity to give up their cars for an entire day, to instead exercise and partake in physical activity. Car-Free Day is one of the Government of Jakarta’s programs to improve local air quality while reducing dependence on motor vehicles. Although it was developed in 2007, the Government of Jakarta decided in May 2012 that Car-Free Day would be held every Sunday within the main avenues of the city; Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Thamrin, from Senayan area to Monas (Monumen Nasional) from 6AM to 11 AM. The program has been so successful in spurring on physical activity, the city has seen a dramatic increase in the number of cyclists on the roads. Therefore, to support the program further, Archipelago International and the favehotel brand held the Fun Walk to promote awareness of alternative

forms of transportation, whilst also demonstrating the health benefits of more active lifestyles for everyone. “Car-Free Day is organized across the world in different ways, but every city shares the common goal of reducing the number of cars on the streets. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Experts question ice wall at Japan nuclear plant

DENPASAR - Agricultural sector in Bali, particularly food crops like rice, has not been able to prosper its farmers. This condition is reflected by the exchange rate of food farmers (NTP-P) of Bali per each subsector, April 2014. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali records the exchange rate in the food crop subsector has decreased from 94.63 to 92.80, down by 1.93 percent. The Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali, Panusunan Siregar, said the farmer exchange rate was one of the indicators to see the ability or purchasing power of farmers in countryside. The farmer exchange rate also showed the exchange power of the agricultural products to goods and services required by farmer household consumption and the production cost of the agricultural products. The higher the farmer exchange rate, the stronger relative level of ability or purchasing power of farmers would be. “The indicator showing the farmers can enjoy their agricultural product is when the exchange rate is over 100. However, what happening today it sits under 100, which only reaches 92.80 percent. In other words, it is inefficient because the expenses are greater than income,” said Panusunan in Denpasar. He said the decline of farmer exchange rate occurred in food crops because the index received by farmers decreased by 1.77 percent, while the index to be paid by farmers rose 0.16 percent. TOKYO — Experts on Friday expressed skepticism about a plan to build a costly underground frozen wall at Japan’s crippled nuclear plant, a development that could delay the start of construction on the project. The experts and Japanese nuclear regulatory officials said during a meeting in Tokyo that they weren’t convinced the project can resolve a serious contaminated water problem at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, which suffered multiple meltdowns following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. said. Dale Klein, a former U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman who now heads a supervisory panel for TEPCO, said he was not convinced the frozen wall is the best option and is worth the high cost. He also suggested that the government and TEPCO review the plan to balance risk and benefit and see whether they should spend the money elsewhere. “Any time you make a decision, it should be based on current, relevant science, and you have to strike a balance between science and policy,” Klein said in an interview Thursday in Tokyo. “At the end of the day, it may be a good alternative. But I’m just not convinced.” Experts have said that while a frozen wall is a proven technology, the size and planned duration of use at Fukushima is unprecedented.

TAI NATIONAL PARK, Ivory Coast — Before dawn in the thick rainforest of western Ivory Coast, the air was filled with the sounds of male chimpanzees screaming, hooting and banging on trees. A baby chimpanzee named Dali slowly stretched out his brown, furry arms and clumsily scrambled from a branch 20 meters (65 feet) high for a breakfast of nuts and insects provided by game rangers. In the next few minutes he would be joined by 15 others who soon clambered off into the depths of Tai National Park. Chimpanzees normally resent humans, but scientists in the park have spent decades “habituating” them so they could be studied. Two years ago, a Disney film got up close for the Tim Allennarrated “Chimpanzee,” which was set in Tai park. Now, conservationists and the

Ivorian government hope to take advantage of the fact that chimps in Tai park are relatively comfortable around humans by launching eco-tourism projects designed to stem the chimpanzee population’s precipitous decline. “Through ecotourism, local people gain something. They see the value of the forest ... and they will preserve it,” said Christophe Boesch, director of West Africa’s Wild Chimpanzee Foundation who has spent 35 years studying Ivory Coast’s chimps. “The more tourists we have, the more likely we will be able to win the battle,” he said. Once a thriving population, chimpanzees in Ivory Coast have experienced a 90 percent decline in the last two decades, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature, which estimates the global chimpanzee population is between 150,000 and 200,000. The last in-depth study, conducted by Boesch’s organization in 2008, said Ivory Coast’s chim-

panzee population now is between 8,000 and 12,000. Though no new studies have since been conducted and chimpanzees are difficult to track, Boesch said he was convinced the drop has continued. One of the biggest factors hurting chimpanzees in Ivory Coast has been environmental degradation — a problem that was exacerbated when the country’s 2010-11 postelection violence which killed more than 3,000 people. Tai National Park is located in the western region, which saw some of the conflict’s worst fighting. Boesch said six habituated chimpanzees were killed, probably by poachers. Long before the violence, however, humans were encroaching on the chimps’ home. Figures on the number of people killed and missing in the disaster Friday varied from 255 to 2,700. From atop a muddy hill, Begam Nesar pointed to the torrent of earth below that had wiped out much of her village. “Thirteen of my family members are under the mud,” she said, including her mother, father, brothers, sisters and children. She said she had been visiting relatives at a nearby village when the disaster struck. The United Nations said Friday at least 350 people died, and the provincial governor said as many as 2,000 people were feared missing. On Saturday, the International Organization of Migration said information they gathered indicated 2,700 people were dead or missing. Part of the confusion lay in the fact that no one knew how many people were home when the landslide struck. At least 255 people were confirmed dead, Khalili said. Most of those were people who had rushed to the scene to help after a previous, smaller landslide. When a bigger landslide hit, those people along with roughly 300 homes were wiped out. South Korea leader visits kin of ferry missing

NEW DELHI — A passenger train derailed in western India on Sunday, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 100, an official said. The engine and four coaches jumped the tracks near Roha station, 110 kilometers (70 miles) south of Mumbai, said police officer Ankush Shinde. The rescuers used gas cutters to open the derailed coaches to reach those trapped inside. Big cranes were deployed to remove these coaches from the rail track, Shinde said. Two of the derailed coaches tilted on one side and one overturned, said railway spokesman Anil Kumar Saxena. The rescue operation was continuing and the death toll was expected to rise, Shinde said. Saxena said that 123 injured passengers, some of them in serious condition, were taken to a hospital. The cause of the derailment was not immediately known. Rail authorities ordered an investigation into the accident, Saxena said. Train movement in the area was suspended as the derailed coaches and the rescue operation blocked an adjacent track as well. I’m a bit bored here sitting around these barracks, every day with nothing to do,’” Hodgson added. “They must have plenty of boredom in their lives.”
