Eric Bana to Star Opposite Connie Britton in Bravo Anthology Series ‘Dirty John’ LOS ANGELES - Eric Bana has been cast in a lead role opposite Connie Britton in the upcoming Bravo anthology series “Dirty John.” Bravo gave “Dirty John” a two-season order in January. The scripted anthology series is based on the series of articles published by the Los Angeles Times’ last fall. Bana, in his U.S. television debut, will star as John Meehan, a handsome and romantic charmer who sweeps Debra Newell (Britton) off her feet and pulls her into his web of lies. The series chronicles the true story of how a romance with Meehan spiraled into secrets, denial and manipulation. Bana starred in several TV shows in his native Australia, but is known for his film work in the U.S. He has starred in films like “Black Hawk Down,” “Hulk,” “Troy,” “Munich,” and “Star Trek.” He is

repped by WME and Sloan, Offer, Weber and Dern. The true-crime tale was also the source of a podcast hosted by LA Times writer Christopher Goffard. Separately, Oxygen Media has ordered a docu series on the Meehan case. The second season of Bravo’s anthology will focus on a different case. The scripted “Dirty John” will be penned by Alexandra Cunningham for Universal Cable Productions, Los Angeles Times Studios and Atlas Entertainment. Cunningham, Richard Suckle, Charles Roven, Mark Herzog, Christopher G. Cowen, and Chris Argentieri will serve as executive producers, with Britton and Bana also set to executive produce. So it’s surprising — shocking even — that Speidi would be the ones keeping the cast of The Hills from reuniting, but Kristin Cavallari said that’s precisely what is happening. During an interview on Jenny McCarthy’s SiriusXM show Tuesday, Cavallari was asked if her cast would be down for a reboot, and she instantly said she was game. She said there were others who are not as interested, or at least as available. “What would it take for you to get in the same room with Spencer, Heidi, Lauren, and Brody?” McCarthy asked. “I’m ready. Bring it on,” Cavallari said. “Well, truth be told, they were trying to get us all together, and then uh … and then two people pulled out.” Maybe it was the mention of two people, as Pratt and Montag coupled up early on in the show, but McCarthy immediately suspected them. “Is it Spencer and Heidi, the two people that pulled out?” she asked. Cavallari was diplomatic at first, “No comment.” “Well, let me just guess then,” McCarthy said. “If it’s them, I’m surprised, because they need money really bad.” Cavallari crumbled: “Well, it’s for a specific reason they can’t do it. They have another contract, so they’re not able to do it.” From that, McCarthy surmised that “they might have their own little show coming out.” “[I’m] spilling all the beans today,” Cavallari admitted. Reps for Pratt and Montag did not return requests for comment. Indian tourists grow 52.50 percent yoy

DENPASAR - The number of Indian tourists traveling to Bali in February reached 26,514 people. This number is the third largest after China and Australia. However, the growth of Indian tourists in February 2018 compared to February 2017 reached the highest growth of 52.50 percent. Division Head of Regional Balance Sheet and Statistical Analysis, at the Bali Central Statistics Agency, Agus Gede Hendrayana Hendrawan, explained the arrival of Indian tourists to Bali in February 2017 amounted to 17,386 people, in January 2018 increased to 29,016, and in February 2018 amounted to 26,514 people. If accumulated during the period of January to February 2018, the number of Indian tourists reached 55,530 people. Meanwhile, in the same period of 2017, the number of Indian tourists only reached 34,906 people. So, when compared to January-February 2018 to 2017, the growth of Indian tourists reached 59.08 percent. This is the highest growth compared to Chinese and Australian tourists. Chinese tourists are ranked first based on the number of visits, even showed negative growth of -35.56 percent. Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. On average, their length of stay reaches five days. With such length of stay, their spending money can reach USD 1,000 the same as other Asia-Pacific tourists. Another advantage of Indian tourists is that they also speak English. So, Indian tourists can be guided by English speaking tour guides. Opening direct flights from Mumbai to Denpasar is one of the efforts undertaken in boosting Indian tourists. In addition, it is also developed by cultural enhancement and spiritual tourism. DENPASAR - Farmers’ welfare index is declining. This makes the image of farming poorer. Nevertheless, it does not necessarily mean if all farming activities are not profitable. Planting fruits and vegetables is considered more profitable. This farming business is chosen by young generation. Division Head of Distribution, Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), I Gede Nyoman Subadri, revealed the index of Farmers Exchange Rate (NTP) of Bali province in March 2018 was 103.50. This index decreased -0.37 percent compared to February 2018 recorded at 103.88. The NTP index of March 2018 is the lowest in the past two years. “But overall, the NTP index of 103.50 indicates that farmers are still able to pay for their lives,” said Monday (Apr. 2). The decline in NTP happens due to changes in the index received by farmers increasing 0.30 percent (132.28 to 132.68). However, in terms of the paid side the increase is higher namely 0.67 percent (127.34 to 128.19). In terms of its subsector from February to March, all the subsectors decreased except for livestock. The NTP index of food crops decreased -1.69 percent, horticulture decreased -0.36 percent, smallholder estates decreased -1.21 percent and fishery decreased -0.23 percent. It’s only livestock that showed an increase of 1.08 percent. If the household consumption component of farmer is removed from the index component paid by farmers, it will get Farmer’s Trade Rate (NTUP). The NTUP of March 2018 actually increased 0.07 percent from 112.33 to 112.42. “The NTUP index more reflects the margin of agricultural business because the compared is only the price of production result to production costs,” he explained. Based on the subsector, only two subsectors showed a decrease namely food crops -1.11 percent and smallholder plantations -0.68 percent. Meanwhile, on the NTP index all subsectors fell, except livestock. Head of the Bali Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantation Agency, I.B. Wisnuardhana, said that NTP indeed fluctuates, especially the food crop subsector because it is seasonal “Usually, the food crop is under 100 because it is seasonal. Once it is harvested, in much production, fixed demand and prices drop, the NTP drops. However, livestock and plantation are always above 100,” he explained. Seeing that condition, the strategy done by farmers is to carry out integrated farming business. “Farmers are not only working on paddy fields but also gardening so there is cross subsidy. Besides, some farmers are planting rice and tobacco in Gianyar and Klungkung,” he said. He affirmed the interest of people to farm is indeed less. They are just farming in paddy fields, especially rice commodities. Limited paddy fields currently only reaching about 79,000 hectares also make not many farmers able to work in paddy fields. “The average ownership of paddy field is small. At least, one farmer has 0.3 hectare, the scale is not economical. So, it is not effective if managed by many people,” he concluded. Meanwhile, the horticulture subsector is planted in the highlands. Young people are said to grow more horticulture both vegetables and fruits. Similarly, the plantation subsector is mostly worked on by younger generation as both subsectors are promising and giving more profits than planting rice or farming in paddy field. Based on data of 2014, from 2,272,632 workforce (population over 15 years), job opportunities in agricultural, plantation, forestry and fishery business absorb the second largest workforce amounting to 528,506 people. Should You Take A Vitamin Every Day? AS a kid, popping a single chewy, sugary multivitamin alongside breakfast was easy. But as an adult, navigating the world of vitamin supplements is more complicated. The sheer number of options available at the store, combined with confusing labels and a lack of nutrition knowledge, can turn the simple task of bettering your health into a seemingly impossible feat. That’s why we chatted with two experts to help clear up the vitamin confusion. Read on to learn what vitamins are, why they’re important and what role they play in a healthy diet.

Vitamins vs. supplements

It’s important to understand the difference between vitamins and vitamin supplements. Dr. Marc Leavey, a primary care internist at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, described vitamins as micronutrients, or “chemicals which act to promote or expedite biochemical reactions within the body.” The majority of vitamins you need come from the environment and the food you eat, he said. Supplements, on the other hand, are the pills you can purchase at the store that contain specific doses of vitamins and minerals, like Vitamin D, iron, biotin and more. Amy Gorin, a registered dieti-

tian nutritionist and owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in the New York City area, said vitamins — along with minerals and other nutrients — are essential for good health. For example, Vitamin C can improve your immune health, while potassium (a mineral) can help stabilize your blood pressure, she explained. The question, then, isn’t whether vitamins are important (they are), but how you should best incorporate them into your daily nutrition plan. Are daily supplements necessary?

Though you should definitely strive to obtain a variety of nutrients every day, including vitamins and minerals, Leavey doesn’t recommend “routine ingestion of vitamin supplements” to achieve this goal. You can get the majority of vitamins and minerals you need by eating a healthy, balanced diet, Gorin added. “Nutrition needs are very individual, and taking such supplements may certainly benefit your health,” she said, especially if you have nutrition deficiencies. “However, this should be determined on an individual basis,” she explained. In other words, there is no onesize-fits-all rule when it comes

to taking supplements. That said, there are certain steps you can take to improve your nutrient intake and boost your overall health. How to improve your nutrition

Start by examining your diet. Gorin recommended keeping a food journal for several days to record everything you eat and how much. “You can use a tracker such as MyFitnessPal to do an evaluation of how much of certain nutrients you’re getting, and you can get a feel for if you’re low in certain vitamins and minerals, or other nutrients such as omega-3s,” she explained. You can then use this information as a guide to determine which foods you should add to your diet to help fill your nutrition gaps. If, however, you adjust your diet and still want to try supplements, Leavey suggested consulting your primary care physician to help guide you through the process. Your doctor can run health tests, pinpoint your deficiencies, and ensure you obtain exactly what you need in the right quantity, he said. If you do opt to take supplements (for vitamins, minerals or

other nutrients), next are four types to consider: 1. Omega-3.

Omega-3 supplements containing DHA and EPA can help improve heart and brain health, Gorin said. “Eating at least two 3.5-ounce servings of cooked fatty fish like salmon and herring weekly would provide the amount of these omega-3s that most people need for good health,” she explained. But if you’re not eating that, she said, a daily supplement of 250 milligrams should do the job.

2. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is crucial for bone health, Gorin stressed, and can also help prevent hyperparathyroidism, “which is an excess of the parathyroid hormone in the bloodstream that may lead to osteoporosis, joint pain and other issues,” she explained. But since Vitamin D comes primarily from exposure to sunlight and can be difficult to obtain from food, Leavey said, many people are deficient and may require a supplement.

Finally, it’s important to keep in mind that supplements aren’t always well-regulated, so be careful when you’re shopping. “You want to make sure that you’re buying a quality product, one that contains what its label says it does and that doesn’t contain any contaminants,” Gorin said. Her advice? “Shop for one that’s undergone third-party testing or review, such as one with a USP Verified mark.” (net)

GIANYAR — Fraud under the guise of fake sweepstakes taking the name of PT Garuda Food Indonesia, managed to claim a victim from Batuan village, Sukawati. The victim, Ni Wayan Panca, who tempted to get the gift in the form of a car, finally transferred millions of rupiahs to the account on behalf of Irnawati A. Tanosa. When met at her residence on Jalan Raya Batuan, Panca with her husband told the origin of the incident. Initially, the fake coupon was obtained by her son on the roadside. Well, when taken home by her son, Wayan Panca was happy to read the three leaflets that read “Congratulations You’re Entitled to Get 1 Unit of Toyota Yaris vehicle.” Being happy after reading the flyer, Wayan Panca directly took her handphone to call the number listed in the leaflet. “At first, I call the number 021-2929-0127 but it was not active. I saw there were another number, 0823-3577-7514 to be contacted,” she explained on Tuesday (Apr. 3). Well, through the phone contact, this mother of two children seemed to have been guided to process the gift. She also transferred some money through ATM to the account of the fraudster. Without thinking twice, I Wayan Panca followed all the instructions. Ultimately, her deposit worth IDR 2 million was totally transferred to the account of the swindler. In fact, the amount of money was not enough. The next day, Wayan Panca returned to be contacted by the perpetrator and have it sent additional money. “The perpetrator said the car had arrived at Ngurah Rai Airport, but it was in pinched condition. I was asked to send money again worth IDR 1 million so that the car gift can be sent immediately,” she explained. Wayan Panca acknowledged that promising speaking style did

not make her hesitate at all. In fact, he asked her husband to borrow money to the neighbors. The money from the loan was quickly transferred. “I do not remember the amount of second transfer, maybe it’s around IDR 1 million,” she said. At that time, Wayan Panca admitted to seemingly have been hypnotized. Her husband had time to ask about the money, but it was ignored by Wayan Panca. Well, after the transfer of money, Wayan and husband were anxiously waiting at home. The disturbing trend first came to light after a nursery worker’s husband spoke out to say his wife was being bullied by her boss for getting pregnant ‘out of turn’. Since then dozens of other women have come forward to share similar stories, with one 26-yearold woman saying she was told to wait until 35 to conceive - despite already suffering from fertility issues. The initial complaint came in a letter to newspaper Mainichi Shimbun last month, from the husband of a woman who works at a nursery in Aichi Prefecture. He wrote: ‘Eight months into our marriage, in January of this year, we found out that my wife was pregnant. ‘My wife, who is a child care provider, appeared glum and anxious over the news.

‘The director at the child care center where she works had determined the order in which workers could get married or pregnant, and apparently there was an unspoken rule that one must not take their “turn” before a senior staff member. ‘My wife and I went together to apologise. “We’re sorry we got pregnant,” we said. ‘The director grudgingly accepted our apology, but since the next day, has been chiding my wife with harsh words, such as, “How could you so selfishly break the rules?” ‘My wife feels guilty thinking about the hard labor conditions of her colleagues.’ While the man admits ‘we are at fault for not planning well’ he goes on to ask: ‘Who benefits from having their “turn” to have children dictated, and following those rules?’ The letter prompted a national outpouring of sympathy and con-

I’ve inherited a house – should I sell it or repair it and rent it out?

Perth may be scenic – but taking on the repair of a property from miles away could end up as a nightmare. Photograph: Alamy Q I have inherited my grandmother’s house (which an estate agent has valued at £160,000 at the most), while my brother also inherited another small property that she had been renting out before she died. She was blind during the last few years of her life and her friend took over all her financial affairs. Sadly he mismanaged these and a large amount of unpaid tax and other fees were due to be paid after her death. Luckily a friend stepped in and lent us the £43,000 needed to pay this off and allow us to inherit the properties. I therefore need to raise money to pay half of what we owe this friend, plus £10,0000 to £15,000 to bring the house up to a suitable condition to rent out or sell as it has been empty quite a while. I’ll also need several thousand pounds more to repair my mother’s home, which is in a bad state of repair. The question is whether this money should come through a mortgage or the sale of the property? Friends and family seem to have such differing views on the matter, which makes me very anxious. The house is up in Perth in Scotland, but I currently live and work in London and don’t have plans to move back there anytime soon. I’m 26 and earn just over £20,000, so a mortgage would be a significant undertaking. However, as I understand it I could get a buy-to-let mortgage if I am receiving rental income of course. Would it be better to raise a mortgage and let it out via an agent (perhaps I should get a mortgage now since I will undoubtedly wish to get on the property ladder at some point) or should I sell and put the money in the bank where it might earn less, but could

be a safer, hassle-free option? I’m concerned that a buy-to-let might not be a wise in an area such as Perth where property prices took the biggest hit in the country in 2017. But on the other hand would it be a prudent time to sell? Maybe I should cut my losses now? Or is there some truth to the saying “safe as houses”? HD A Apart from the potential nightmare scenario of managing a building project from nearly 500 miles away, the major flaw in your possible refurbish-to-rent plan is that you will struggle to find a buy-to-let mortgage lender willing to make you a loan. The majority of lenders will lend only on properties that are ready to be lived in. The limited number of lenders who offer mortgages on properties in need of renovation do so only to established landlords and not to novices. Your other problem is that while the renovation work is going on, you’ll have no rental income coming in so you would have to find some other way of paying the monthly mortgage payments and, as you say, taking on a mortgage on your current salary would be a significant undertaking. And I suspect that, if you are paying rent in London, you are unlikely to be able to afford a mortgage on top. So, in essence, there’s no actual decision to be made as selling the property is the only realistic option. Raising money by selling rather than mortgaging the property is also cheaper as there’s no interest to pay. Once you’ve cleared your share of the debt to your friend and covered the repairs to your mother’s home, you should still have a tidy sum left over. If you’re determined to become a landlord, you could use it as a deposit on a buy-to-let property. Alternatively, you could use it to buy a home of your own. (afp)

‘Shocking’ disparity in pension income revealed by latest HMRC data

The average pensioner living within London’s Square Mile enjoys an income that is three times as big as their counterpart in Stoke-on-Trent, according to a new analysis of government data that reveals “shocking” differences across the UK. Recently released HM Revenue & Customs data showed there were about 1,000 older people living within the City of London, which includes the Barbican estate, who receive a total pension income averaging £37,900 a year. That means the City of London tops the UK table for pension income, yet just eight miles away lies the area with the UK’s second-lowest pension income. In the London borough of Barking and Dagenham, the mean average pension income that older people had to manage on was £12,800. The only part of the country with a lower figure was Stoke-on-Trent, where the mean average was just £12,300. The insurer Royal London said the figures “highlight shocking disparities in pension incomes even within the same region”. In some cases, “very prosperous pensioners” are living only a few miles

down the road from those who are struggling on much more modest incomes, it says. “When it comes to pension incomes, there is not a simple northsouth divide,” says Helen Morrissey, personal finance specialist at Royal London. “While all of the top 10 local authorities are in London and the south-east, three of the lowest-income authorities are also in London and the south-east.” The second, third and seventh spots in the table of the highestincome areas were also taken by London boroughs: Westminster (£29,500), Kensington and Chelsea (£26,700) and Camden (£24,000). The local authority area outside

the capital with the highest average pension income was South Bucks, in the county of Buckinghamshire. Meanwhile, the two other areas in the bottom 10 of incomes that are in southern England are Southampton, where the figure was £13,100, and Slough, where it was £13,500. In Scotland, mean pension incomes range from £20,000 in Stirling to £13,900 in North Lanarkshire. In Wales they range from £18,700 in the Vale of Glamorgan to £13,900 in Caerphilly. It also happens to the celebration of Galungan (Feb. 10) and Kuningan (Feb. 20), where during the feast the barong bangkung or barong bangkal troupe will definitely do ngelawang or street show. Barong bangkal or barong bangkung is a large enough and old pig considered a mythical animal having a mystical power. Attires of the barong are made of black and white velvet. However, in general, the attires are not pretentious like that of other types of barong. In every show, the barong bangkung is also equipped with trinkets of ate leaves and the dancers are wearing checkered trousers and rattles tied on legs, so that when moving they will generate rattling sound. Barong bangkal is carried by two dancers and the performances are held in the streets and around the village. With the presence of barong show, villagers will feel they have been protected by deities marked by the arrival of barong bangkal or barong bangkung. The show is accompanied with batel bebarongan gamelan music consisting of drums, tawa-tawa, kelenang, kelenong, cymbals and kempur. The word ngelawang is derived from the word lawang meaning ‘door,’ a term in the Balinese language that means a gallivanting show from one house to another or from one village to another. This gallivanting show with diverse Balinese artistic traditions is performed by art troupe. Allegedly this traditional show sources from a Hindu mythology, namely Shiva Tattva. Once upon a

time Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma are making love in improper place and time, so that harmony shakes. As a result, it brings in misery for mankind and other living beings. After realizing his fault, Lord Shiva sent gods to calm down the situation and reassure the whole universe. When arriving on earth, the gods created and performed a variety of art forms. Through the love of art show the whole universe is back to peaceful condition. The meaning of purification in the Shiva Tattva mythology is also harmonious with the content of disaster repellent in the legend on the insolence destruction of Mayadenawa that was then celebrated as the starting point of Galungan, the celebration of victory of dharma (truth) against adharma (untruth). Ngelawang poses a cultural energy having a spiritual aspect, arts and entertainment. This tradition means to expel evil spirits and protects population from any plagues or diseases caused by evil spirits (bhuta kala). When performing ngelawang, homeowners will usually offer an oblation with sesari (money). Ngelawang tradition inherited from generation to generation means to neutralize the universe, reject all kinds of diseases interfering with human life, including psychically driving away those having evil intention.

Entil is famous in the area of Pupuan, while it is also made at Tengkudak, Penebel, Tabanan district. Moreover, this simple traditional food can be easily found in traditional stalls at villages. It also often becomes a menu of culinary events in the festival held by the government of Tabanan. At Tanah Lot Kreatifood Festival, for instance, this menu is favored by visitors. According to Sutiani, entil is usually presented on particular days, such as Nyepi or Day of Silence where the Hindus perform catur brata penyepian or four abstinences where people will not turn or light fire, not work, not travel and not enjoy any entertainment, so food stock is needed. On that account, entil is chosen because it is durable and not easily stale. “Now, entil is widely sold in traditional markets and stalls, like what I do,” she said. Entil is made from rice and grated coconut and then wrapped in bamboo leaves tied with rope. In the past, people used bamboo or coconut bark ropes, but now many people prefer to use plastic ropes. Meanwhile, the seasoning in use includes base genep (complete seasoning), such as onion, garlic, chili, ginger, turmeric, aromatic ginger, galangal and other spices. It is also coupled with grated coconut to make urap seasoning. How to make it? First of all, soak rice for overnight. Police identify YouTube shooting suspect, but say motive is still unclear

CALIFORNIA - A woman opened fire at the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California, on Tuesday afternoon, injuring several people with a handgun before killing herself, authorities said.

Police identified the shooter as 39-year-old Nasim Aghdam, a resident of San Diego. She appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said during a news conference. Four others were injured, officials said. Three victims sustained gunshot wounds and one apparently injured an ankle while fleeing the attack. Dr. Andre Cambpell, a trauma surgeon at San Francisco General, said that all the patients were awake and aware of what happened. “Once again we are confronted with the specter of a mass casualty situation in the city of San Francisco, where we now have three victims that we have taken care of,” Campbell said. “This is unfortunate and continues. To think that after we’ve seen Las Vegas, Parkland, the Pulse nightclub shooting, that we would see an end to this, but we have not. ” The police are currently investigating possible motives for the shooting. “At this time there is no evidence that the shooter knew the victims of this shooting or that individuals

were specifically targeted,” the San Bruno Police Department said in a statement. Aghdam was a prolific social media user and had several YouTube channels in multiple languages, including English, Farsi and Turkish. Her videos often showed her dancing or cooking vegan recipes, and her Instagram account had more than 55,000 followers. All of Aghdam’s YouTube and Instagram accounts were shut down on Tuesday evening. In recent months, Aghdam was openly critical of YouTube’s policies and even accused the company of intentionally restricting her channel’s growth, according to a website apparently created by her. “There is no equal growth opportunity on YOUTUBE or any other video sharing site,” Aghdam wrote. “Your channel will grow if they want to!!!!!” In February 2017, Aghdam posted a photo on Facebook of her holding a sign that accuses YouTube of discriminating against its users and censoring its users’ content. ANKARA - Russian President Vladimir Putin Tuesday said he had agreed with Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to speed up the delivery of S-400 air defence missile systems to Ankara, a purchase that has alarmed Turkey’s NATO partners. “We took the decision to speed up the timetable for the delivery of these highly effective Russian systems,” Putin told reporters after talks with Erdogan in the Turkish capital, referring to the S-400s but without giving a date. He said that acceleration in production of the weapons was being done at the “request of our Turkish partners and friends”. The deal has been valued at about $2 billion according to reports. Russian officials had said in December that the first deliveries of the S-400s were likely to begin at the end of 2019 or beginning

of 2020 Such a major purchase of weaponry from Russia by a key NATO member had raised concerns both over Turkey’s strategic orientation and the compatability of the systems within the alliance. But Erdogan indicated that Turkey was in no mood to listen to criticism from the West over the purchase. “This is a decision of Turkey. We made an agreement about the S-400s (with Russia) and this issue is now closed,” he said. According to Russian press reports, Turkey has also been hugely interested in a technology transfer and even joint production of the S-400s with Russia, a prospect that has been resisted by some in the Moscow security services. 32 child trafficking, exploitation cases recorded in qi 2018: KPAI

JAKAARTA - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has recorded 32 cases of child trafficking and exploitation during the period between January and March 2018. At a press conference held in Jakarta on Tuesday, KPAI`s Child Trafficking and Exploitation Commissioner Ai Maryati Solihah noted that of the total figure, eight cases were of child trafficking, 13 of commercial sexual exploitation of children, nine of child victims of prostitution, and two cases of child victims of economic exploitation. “This figure is snowballing based on data collected from the National Police`s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) on trafficking in persons during the 2011-2017 period,” she noted. Data from Bareskrim indicated 422 cases of child trafficking during the 2011-2017 period, with the modus operandi mostly being sexual exploitation. Similarly, the International Organization for Migration data indicated that during the period between 2005 and 2017, some 8,876 victims of trafficking were reported, with 15 percent, or as many as 1,155 being children. “In the last three months, cases of trafficking and exploitation targeting minors reveal the complexity of cases that necessitate concern,” Solihah said. According to Solihah, a new modus operandi in human trafficking and exploitation is targeting children to drive them into prostitution and exploit them for economic benefits. “Children take up bad jobs to fake internship programs abroad,” she added.(ant)

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) would support the plan of the General Election Commission (KPU) to ban former prisoners in corruption cases to become legislative candidates in the election. “Basically, we support the regulation that ban, for instance legislative candidate, that involved in the corruption case. I think I have conveyed the idea once, before the KPU did,” KPK chief Agus Rahardjo said here on Tuesday. According to Agus, the commission would discuss the issue further with the KPU. “We will discuss this with the KPU, what kind of support they might need, so that together we can voice the need for the country to be managed by executive and legislative members with good integrity,” he said. Agus disclosed that the anti-graft body and KPU has earlier discussed the issue during an event in Surabaya city of East Java. “In fact, we have discussed it, but we will talk further about this, to enable KPK to give its support in a proper time,” he added. Earlier on Monday, KPU said it would ban former prisoners in corruption cases, drug, and sexual abuse to become legislative contestants in the election, and it would add a new article in the KPU Regulation (PKPU) on legislative candidacy in the general election in 2019. “We will include regulation on the ban for former prisoner in corruption case to become a legislative candidate. We will include this in PKPU because we do not mention this in the current law,” KPU member Hasyim Asy`ari said. The regulation is aimed at ensuring voters to elect clean leaders. (rtr)

Golkar call for talks on Jokowi`s running mate

JAKARTA - A member of the ruling coalition pledging support for reelection of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called for talks on the mechanism to elect a running mate of Jokowi in the forthcoming presidential race in 2019. “We hope at least there should be agreement on the mechanism to elect the candidate for vice president in April, certainly involving Jokowi in the selection,” a member of the Central Executive Board of Golkar party Ahmad Doli Kurnia said here on Tuesday.

It may be necessary to consider phases of collection of candidates and nomination of a candidate, Ahmad Doli added. He said the phases are necessary to develop a democratic system that the nomination is a true result of interaction among political parties. In addition through the phases of the selection and nomination the candidates would prepare themselves especially in vision in line with Jokowi`s vision, he said. Believe him or not, Canelo Alvarez’s vow to be more cautious rings hollow

MEXICO - Canelo Alvarez and his team spent an hour Tuesday trying to convince the public that his positive drug tests on Feb. 17 and Feb. 21 for Clenbuterol that forced the cancellation of his May 5 bout with Gennady Golovkin were the result of eating contaminated meat. Attorney Ricardo Cestero said Alvarez had already supplied credit-card receipts and bank statements to the Nevada Athletic Commission in an attempt to prove that Alvarez had eaten meat in Mexico prior to the positive tests, thus backing his contaminated-meat defense. Alvarez strongly maintained his innocence and said he feels “powerless” because of his inability to put on the Golovkin fight as scheduled. “I want to prove without a doubt that I have never intentionally ingested Clenbuterol,” Alvarez said. “I have nothing to hide and I want to be open and transparent through this process. I have never taken illegal substances and this is no different.” For those who believed in Alvarez, or wanted to believe in him, Tuesday’s news conference in Los Angeles provided the assurance that it was a mistake that could have happened to anyone.

For those skeptical of Alvarez’s claims, though, no solid evidence was provided that would have changed one’s mind. Dr. Miguel Ángel Nazul, the vice president of the Mexican Federation of Sports Medicine, said the levels that were found in Alvarez’s system were consistent with having eaten contaminated meat. In response to a question from Yahoo Sports, though, Nazul conceded that currently there is no test that can reliably discriminate between intentional and unintentional ingestion of Clenbuterol. Nazul also said researchers are attempting to develop a hair analysis test that can reliably do that, but it is not ready yet. “This is a well-known issue and it is very, very difficult to prove what those values are, like you had asked, whether it’s been tapering off or not,” Nazul said. “… At this particular moment, it is almost impossible to clarify how it was

ingested.” Hair analysis is reliable to distinguish between intentional and unintentional use in some substances now but not in others. It is of no more value currently than urine in determining that regarding Clenbuterol. Alvarez pulled out of the fight, as Golden Boy president Eric Gomez explained, because there would not be enough time between fight night and his April 18 disciplinary hearing. Also, Gomez noted that Nevada’s rules mandate a suspension, so it was unlikely Alvarez would be able to fight. By withdrawing now, Alvarez gave Golovkin and his team time to put together and market a new fight. The Nevada Athletic Commission put out an agenda item for a Thursday meeting that requested May 5 at the MGM Grand for GGG Boxing, so it is likely the fight will be moved from T-Mobile to the MGM. When Liverpool agreed to make Virgil van Dijk the most expensive defender in football history, it was with nights like this in mind. And as the Dutchman reflected on his dream move, these were the games which had helped convince him his future belonged at Anfield. “Why wouldn’t you want to play here?” Van Dijk had pondered after visiting with Southampton in November. A bad day, on the face of it – Saints were outclassed in losing 3-0 – but one which served only to strengthen his desire to move to Merseyside. Five weeks later he got his wish, the end of a long and at times farcical pursuit from Liverpool. Now, the £75 million man is preparing for one of those Anfield nights, a Champions League quarter-final under the lights. And it just had to be against Manchester City, didn’t it? Make no mistake, if Pep Guardiola had his way, Van Dijk would be lining up in sky blue on Wednesday night. City opted for cool indifference when news of Liverpool’s £75m deal emerged a couple of days after Christmas; ‘never a first-choice target – too expensive’ was the word out of the Etihad. They were fooling nobody. City, like Liverpool, had spent the best part of 18 months monitoring Van Dijk’s progress at Southampton, sounding out his representatives, devising a plan where the 26-year-old would become the long-term successor to Vincent Kompany at the Etihad. Van Dijk, though, wanted Liverpool. He wanted to work with Jurgen Klopp, to become the leader of his defence. He wanted the chance to make himself a legend at one of the world’s most historic clubs. He saw similarities with Celtic, his former club, and their fanatical support. Scotland was never going to be a long-term destination, but Van Dijk had been struck by the way Hoops fans followed their team, by their undying love and passion, by the songs they sung. “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” they said. He listened.

City had its appeal – Guardiola is some coach, after all, and his playing style would seem to fit ideally with the classy, ball-playing Dutchman’s – but when Van Dijk decided he wanted out of Southampton, in the spring of 2017, there was only one place he wanted to go. Threatened with a ‘tapping up’ charge, Liverpool were forced into an embarrassing public climbdown, withdrawing their interest in the player and facing the wrath of their supporters by doing so. Van Dijk, meanwhile, trained alone, handed in a formal transfer request and released a lengthy statement in which he criticised Southampton for standing in the way of his ambition. Liverpool ended August not just without Van Dijk, but without any centre-back at all – an unthinkable scenario at the start of the window. For Klopp, it was simple; Van Dijk or nothing. He and his recruitment team looked at the central defenders moving across Europe during the past two years and saw a difficult market. They saw the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Antonio Rudiger, Victor Lindelof, Michael Keane and Davinson Sanchez moving for big-money in the Premier League, and heard West Brom’s valuation of Jonny Evans. None compared to Van Dijk. “We watched all of them 500 million times,” Klopp said back in September. “I had to make a decision and the decision was our boys are not worse than them.” Van Dijk, however, was different, and so while Liverpool supporters (and pundits) bemoaned the club’s transfer market negligence, behind the scenes the club were laying the

Delight for Liverpool fans, wearied by their side’s soft centre. Frustration for City, who having been snubbed by Van Dijk would turn their attention to Aymeric Laporte of Athletic Bilbao. The young Spaniard has made a low-key start to life at the Etihad. As for Van Dijk, his impact has been steady if not spectacular. His 11 games so far have brought four clean sheets and 11 goals conceded. Neither Matip, who is now injured, nor Lovren have ironed out the flaws that were apparent earlier in the season. Noticeable, though, is how vocal the Dutchman is, how he controls and cajoles those around him, how the ball appears attracted to his head in both penalty areas. His debut, an FA Cup tie against Everton, ended with him scoring the winner in front of the Kop – he might have had three or four more goals since. City represents a fresh step for Van Dijk.
