Alanis Morissette’s ex-manager gets 6 years for stealing $7M LOS ANGELES — A business manager who stole more than $7 million from Alanis Morissette and others was sentenced Wednesday to six years in federal prison after the singer made a pitch for a lengthy and severe sentence saying he stole her dreams. Morissette said she had placed the fortune she earned through her fame in the trust of Jonathan Todd Schwartz and he had secretly siphoned her accounts while constantly misleading her about her net worth. “He did this in a long, systematic, drawn-out and sinister manner,” Morissette said, adding it would have bankrupted her within three years had the thefts continued. Schwartz, 47, who blamed his gambling addiction for the thefts, wept and apologized at the hearing, saying he took full responsibility for his behavior and would have a life of shame because of it. “I alone am responsible for the devastation,” he said, in seeking less than a year in prison. “I will spend the rest of my life asking for forgiveness.” Prosecutors were seeking just over five years in prison for Schwartz, but Judge Dolly Gee said she thought Schwartz deserved more time for the “sheer audaciousness of this conduct.” Gee noted that she has often criticized federal sentencing guidelines as draconian, but noted that they weren’t harsh enough in this case. Gee said Schwartz’s gambling addiction may explain the wire fraud and tax crimes, but didn’t excuse them. She also ordered him to pay $8.6 million in restitution. Schwartz acknowledged stealing nearly $5 million from Morissette between May 2010 and January 2014 and more than $2 million from five unnamed clients when he worked at GSO Business Management, a firm that touted relationships with entertainers such as Katy Perry, 50 Cent and Tom Petty. Schwartz was a high-flying partner making $1.2 million a year, according to court papers. The thefts struck a blow to the firm’s reputation that is expected to cost the firm $20 million and led to nearly a dozen layoffs, according to founder Bernard Gudvi. The embezzlement was discovered by a new money manager Morissette hired. “It was at this time, I realized he also stole my dreams,” she said. When the firm was contacted about the apparent theft, Schwartz made “wild accusations” that his former client was in the throes of drug addiction and mentally unstable, Gudvi said. Schwartz also falsely claimed Morissette had invested the money in an illegal marijuana growing business. “As the walls were closing in on the scheme to steal client funds ... he was unable to turn away from the lies,” Gudvi wrote in a letter to the court. “The worse things became, the more easily he seemed to dispense with the truth.” Prosecutors acknowledged that Schwartz lost some money gambling, but said the funds financed a lavish lifestyle. Brad Pitt says he quit drinking, in therapy after split with Jolie

NEW YORK - Brad Pitt has opened up for the first time about his divorce from Angelina Jolie, admitting to heavy drinking and pot smoking and a lifetime of cutting himself off emotionally from others. The 53-year-old actor told GQ Style in an extensive interview released on Wednesday that he had quit drinking, was undergoing therapy, and that he and Jolie were committed to resolving matters amicably and privately. “I just started therapy,” the “Moneyball” star said in the interview for the summer issue of GQ Style. “I love it. I love it. I went through two therapists to get to the right one.” Jolie’s sudden announcement in September 2016 that she was filing for divorce sent shockwaves through the celebrity world. The couple known as Brangelina, who married in 2014 and have six children, embarked on a bitter child custody dispute and Pitt was investigated for possible child abuse

after losing his temper in front of some of the children. The actor was cleared of the allegations and in January the pair agreed to use a private judge in their divorce case. Pitt said the split with Jolie, 41, had been a “huge generator for change.” “I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or had a spliff, or something... “I’m really, really happy to be done with all of that. I mean I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this last year, you know — things I wasn’t dealing with. I was boozing too much,” he said. Pitt said he loved wine, adding “truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I

was a professional. I was good.” He said he has quit drinking, replacing alcohol with cranberry juice and fizzy water. Regarding the divorce, Pitt said he and Jolie had decided to abandon the path of “vitriolic hatred” and work together to sort out their issues. Pitt said he was finding solace in working creatively with his hands. “I’m making everything. I’m working with clay, plaster, rebar, wood.” As for the movie business, “I don’t really think of myself much as an actor anymore. It takes up so little of my year and my focus. Film feels like a cheap pass for me, as a way to get at those hard feelings. After North Korea criticism, China says wants to be good neighbour BEIJING - China said on Thursday it wants to be good neighbours with North Korea, after the isolated country’s state news agency published a rare criticism of Chinese state media commentaries calling for tougher sanctions over the North’s nuclear programme. The United States has urged China, North Korea’s only major ally, to do more to rein in the North’s nuclear and missile programmes, which have prompted an assertive response from the Trump administration, warning that an “era of strategic patience” is over. A commentary carried by North Korea’s KCNA news agency referred to recent commentaries in China’s People’s Daily and Global Times newspapers, which it said were “widely known as media speaking for the official stand of the

Chinese party and government”. In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said China’s position was consistent and clear. “China’s position on developing friendly, good-neighbourly relations with North Korea is also consistent and clear,” Geng told reporters, in response to a question about the KCNA commentary. China was unswervingly devoted to the denuclearisation of the peninsula and maintaining peace and security and resolving the issue through talks, Geng added. The WeChat ac-

Again, rally rejects online-based transportation

Police chief mediates drivers and transportation agency head DENPASAR - Hundreds of conventional taxi drivers again held a rally in front of the office of the governor of Bali on Wednesday (May 3). The drivers threatened not to leave before the governor or the head of the Bali transportation agency could meet them. Chief of Denpasar Police, Hadi Purnomo, finally came down directly to mediate the meeting between the transportation agency head and the drivers. In the demonstration filled with joint prayers, the drivers no longer merely demanded the blocking of the online application-based transport such as Uber and Grab Taxi. However, they also questioned the remaining quota as much as 7,500 issued by the Bali transportation agency. “Regarding the quota in Bali, in 2015 I had a meeting with Assistant II. In 2015 through 2019 it has been overloaded,” said the action coordinator, I Ketut Witra. He questioned the study to get the remaining transport quota as much as 7,500. It is said, there should be written document related to legality of the study. On the other hand, the head of the transportation agency is also accused of having asked the Bali Tourism Driver Association (Aspaba) to

join with Grab. “Why did you invite Aspaba to join with Grab? Are you the boss of Grab?” asked Witra. Head of the Bali Transportation Agency, IGA Sudarsana, denied to have asked Aspaba or any other driver associations to join with Grab. Actually the drivers had also prepared a letter of intent to be signed by the head of the transportation agency. Its content is related to the blocking of Grab and Uber, and termination of their operation in Bali. However, Sudarsana firmly refused to sign such a statement. Sudarsana asserted that his agency did not have the authority to close or block Grab and Uber. “The authority to close lies in the ministry,” he said. Since there is no meeting point having been agreed yet, chief of Denpasar police promised to invite the representative of conventional drivers, online drivers including the head of the transportation agency to further discuss about the issue at the headquarters of the Denpasar police. NEGARA - Euphoria of high school and vocational high school graduation in Jembrana on Monday (May 2) was celebrated with the act of graffiti and convoy on the street. Most of them did not wear safety helmet and even got escort and supervision from police personnel. Moreover, the ranks of Jembrana police on Monday afternoon also made a raid to hotels and inns on the instruction of Jembrana Police Chief, Djoni Widodo, to anticipate undesired things, which have been done by students after the announcement of their graduation. On the other hand, there are ten students of SMAN 1 Negara high school celebrating their graduation

with simple but meaningful way. They carried 50 packs of wrapped rice and drinking water to be distributed around the Negara market such as to parking attendants, porters at the market, truck drivers and disadvantaged people. One of the students of the SMAN 1 Negara, Laurenda Gwee, representing her friends, revealed that such an activity is a spontaneity undertaken with some friends. They did such an action because they are not interested in the events like convoy and shirt graffiti. Aside from being useless and disturbing, it is not to be proud of. “As an educated person, let alone have graduated from high school, we should know

what is good to do,” she explained. According to the student living at Baler Bale Agung (Negara), their uniforms can be donated. “Our uniforms are still feasible and can be donated. It’s a pity to be scribbled. Our parents have already struggled to finance us. It is better for us to make beautiful memories that can be proud of,” she said. The activity was said to be purely based on her and friends’ initiative as well as spontaneously carried out with their sincere donation. “There are students donating IDR 30,000, 50,000 and IDR 100,000. Hopefully, this is useful action and can inspire the other students and younger classes so that later on they

can do more positive and useful activities as well as avoid convoy and scribbles,” she hoped. The activities of distributing wrapped rice by students of SMAN 1 Negara high school was also posted on social media like Facebook and became viral. Many netizens shared and appreciated to their positive activities. Netizens hoped that such kind of activity can also become a tradition after graduation announcement, whether to distribute wrapped rice, cleanup garbage and other positive activities to mark the graduation. “It is better than undertaking convoys, graffiti and other useless activities,” said some teachers.

In the meantime, Principal of SMAN 1 Negara, Ngurah Prapta Arya, when asked for his confirmation on Monday afternoon even claimed not to know about what has been undertaken by some of his students having distributed wrapped rice. “The graduation announcement at ten o’clock in the morning at school with customary clothes to temple and there is not accompanied with the distribution of Jenggo rice,” he said. However, when being informed that some of his students celebrated the graduation by distributing wrapped rice, Prapta Arya admitted to be proud if the students have done positive activities. (kmb)

PLASTIC waste becomes a problem experienced in every district and municipality in Bali without exception for Bangli district. Plastic waste has become a threat to survival in the future. So, to combat the problem of plastic waste in Bangli, local government through the Bangli environment agency (DLH) makes a breakthrough to handle plastic waste known as ‘Plastic Waste Collection Movement.’ Head of the Bangli Environment Agency, Ida Ayu Gede Yudi Sutha,

said the Plastic Waste Collection Movement is a breakthrough to create a clean and beautiful environment for all villages in Bangli, so that they can be free from plastic waste. She said that all this time plastic waste becomes a common problem faced by every district and municipality in Bali including Bangli. In the future, if the waste is not addressed and taken seriously, it will be able to damage the environment and disrupt survival. “Unless handled immediately,

plastic waste can pollute the environment. If plastic waste is left as such, it will be able to pollute the surrounding environment and can affect the future viability. If plastic waste is not burned, it takes decades to be decomposed by the land,” said Yudi Sutha on Wednesday (May 3). Yudi Sutha added that to run the breakthrough, her agency makes cooperation with related agencies, schools from elementary to high school and vocational school as well as general public in all subdistricts.

She said that if the program is not implemented together, it will be difficult to be run. According to her, whatever is done should get full support from all parties. Thus, any program made will be able to run well. “We regularly carry out this activity every month. In the previous months, we already ran the program. Hopefully, this breakthrough could encourage the whole community to care about plastic waste,” she explained. In the future, this activity is also

expected to maintain sanitation of every village and can be avoided from waste, especially plastic waste. She also asked the community to be more aware so as not to dispose of any garbage haphazardly but in place. If the habit has been practiced, she believed that in the future Bangli can become a clean area of plastic waste. “If it is clean from plastic waste, the surrounding environment will also look clean, beautiful and pleasing to the eye,” added Yudi Sutha. Greek drama: Chanel recreates Parthenon for Paris show

PARIS — Karl Lagerfeld climbed Mount Olympus for inspiration in creating Chanel’s latest resort collection, presenting a spectacular Grecian-themed show to a celebrity audience in Paris on Wednesday. While Gucci will go to Florence, Louis Vuitton to Kyoto, and Dior to Los Angeles to show off their cruise fashions— Lagerfeld chose to host the normally itinerant mid-season collection in Chanel’s terra mater. Lagerfeld, a larger-than-life fashion showman who is rarely upstaged, opted instead to bring the wonders of the ancient world to Paris’ Grand Palais.

Celebrity guests who included Keira Knightley, Isabelle Huppert and filmmaker Pedro Almodovar gazed in awe at the backdrop that recreated ruins from the Parthenon in Athens and the famed Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion stone for stone, column for column. Pebbles, marble stones and sand decorated the runway alongside a real olive tree, while shrubs and mountain flowers peeked out from between the rocks by which the Grecian goddess-styled models walked during the 15-minute presentation. “Reality is of no interest to me.

MANGUPURA - PT. Angkasa Pura I (Persero) plans to expand the land used by Ngurah Rai Aiport. Several options are being discussed, including reclaiming part of the sea. In response to this plan, the Badung House of Representatives aiprot operator PT Angkasa Pura I to conduct an in-depth study of this plan and to make their plans known to the public.

When met on Tuesday (May 2), Vice Chairman of the Badung House of Representatives, Made Sunarta, revealed that if the airport is extended onto exisitng land, it should of ocourse not be problematic. If however reclamation of the sea is chosen as an option, clearly serious studies will be needed. Sunarta said that he hopes that a pile system can be used and added that if reclamation is the only option then the greateer interest of Bali needs to be looked at. “It should be carefully considered to see if this expansion is being done for the greater interest of Bali as a whole, so that nobody is harmed in the process” he said. According to Sunarta who is also Chairman of the Badung Democrat Party, all interested parties needs to be involved in a comprehensive discussion of this matter to ensure that the greater interest of Bali in terms of the central and lcoal givernment plans to incrrease the number of visitors to Bali is being considered. The district government is responsible for making this information available to the public. “By making the plan known to the local commu-

nities, people can gain a better understanding of the purpose of this project and what the benefits are” he concluded. Chairman of Commission II of the Badung House of Representatives, Wayan Luwir Wiana, made similar comments saying that the plan to expand the airport needs to be made known to the district and provincial governments as well as to the local communities. Wiana added that clearly there is a need to expand the number of runaways at eh airport. However the central and local governments need to coordinate with each other and make careful studies of the plan and then make this plan known to the public. According to this PDI-P politician from Benoa village, the aiprort management has yet to share any information related to the planned expansion of the airport wih the Badung House of Representatives. Furthermore the plan remains unclear. “I only heard about it from my colleagues in the media. Hopefully the airport authorities will make their plans known so as to avoice any miscommunication” he said. With regard to the environmental impacts of expanding the airport, Luwir said that studies are needed and that these should included the social impact of the expansion as well. Has there been any analysis of the environment impact of the plan? “If they go ahead with plan without having made it known before hand, and there is a problem, who will be responsible? In Negara, some students celebrate graduation by distributing wrapped rice NEGARA - Euphoria of high school and vocational high school graduation in Jembrana on Monday (May 2) was celebrated with the act of graffiti and convoy on the street. Most of them did not wear safety helmet and even got escort and supervision from police personnel. Moreover, the ranks of Jembrana police on Monday afternoon also made a raid to hotels and inns on the instruction of Jembrana Police Chief, Djoni Widodo, to anticipate undesired things, which have been done by students after the announcement of their graduation. On the other hand, there are ten students of SMAN 1 Negara high school celebrating their graduation with simple but meaningful way. They carried 50 packs of wrapped rice and drinking water to be distributed around the Negara market such as to parking attendants, porters at the market, truck drivers and disadvantaged people. One of the students of the SMAN 1 Negara, Laurenda Gwee, representing her friends, revealed that such an activity is a spontaneity undertaken with some friends. They did such an action because they are not interested in the events like convoy and shirt graffiti. Aside from being useless and disturbing, it is not to be proud of. “As an educated person, let alone have graduated from high school, we should know what is good to do,” she explained. According to the student living at Baler Bale Agung (Negara), their uniforms can be donated. “Our uniforms are still feasible and can be donated. It’s a pity to be scribbled. Our parents have already struggled to finance us. It is better for us to make beautiful memories that can

be proud of,” she said. The activity was said to be purely based on her and friends’ initiative as well as spontaneously carried out with their sincere donation. “There are students donating IDR 30,000, 50,000 and IDR 100,000. Hopefully, this is useful action and can inspire the other students and younger classes so that later on they can do more positive and useful activities as well as avoid convoy and scribbles,” she hoped. The activities of distributing wrapped rice by students of SMAN 1 Negara high school was also posted on social media like Facebook and became viral. Many netizens shared and appreciated to their positive activities. Netizens hoped that such kind of activity can also become a tradition after graduation announcement, whether to distribute wrapped rice, cleanup garbage and other positive activities to mark the graduation. “It is better than undertaking convoys, graffiti and other useless activities,” said some teachers. DENPASAR - The Benoa branch of PT Pelindo III was asked not to abandon their task of taking care of Benoa Harbour. The Benoa Harbor development master plan (RIP) should focus on supporting the smooth operation of the harbor and should not be involved in building tourism facilities such as hotels ir other accomodations. “The expansion of infrastructure should support the smoothness of operations at the harbour. If there is a plan to build a hotel, it is not part of their duties to be involved with that” said member of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, I Kadek Nuartana, when contacted on Tuesday (May 2). According to Nuartana, the harbor development plan must also be in accordance with the detailed spatial plan. When asked how the harbour can be developed, he explained: “In terms of tourism supporting facilities, there needs to first be corrdinatino with the local government”, said this PKPI politician. Another legislator of the Bali House of Representatives of Denpasar constituency, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said that PT.Pelindo is indeed permitted to build tourism facilities, but elaborated that if they want to build a hotel in Canggu or Ubud or Buleleng for example there is no problem. They are not however allowed to build in the

area that they are assigned to IE Benoa harbour. “If we find businesses competing over a public place such as the harbour at the expense of public interest, then that is clearly wrong. Now, if amid the public interest (harbor—Ed) it also included other businesses competing against its own people, that’s wrong. Even if Pelindo is allowed to build tourism facilities, I am confident that the central government does not agree with them doing so in an are where the accommodation industry has developed” he said. Based on Adhi Ardhana’s personal experience, visiting seven different harbours in Europe (Geneva, Barcelona, ??Tenerife, Canary Island, Madeira, Malaga and Rome) he said that he saw zero hotels or apartments build in these harbours. He did however seea few duty-free shops, SMEs businesses selling products such as local food and beverages and tourism facilities such as parking, seanting and counters seling tour packages.

“Pelindo is a purely state-owned company, right? Its assignment is clearly to provide harbor services. If it wants to establish a hotel, for example, it should not be built in the area that they are assigned to provide service to. This would be a conflict of interest. Cruise ship and yacht, fishing boats and merchants ship docks, storage facilities, cafeterias, duty free shops and museums are allowed” he explained. Another member of the Bali House of Representatives of Denpasar constituency, I Gusti Putu Budiartha, said that he considers it reasonable that the Municipality of Denpasar has not issued a license for the development of a master plan for Benoa Harbor considering that it the barbour contributes almost nothing to the municipality nor to Pedungan customary village where the operations area of ??the Pelindo sits. Actually, the community has attempted to improve the road so the harbor would be operated from there. “Frankly speaking, our customary village -where Pelindo is located, does not receive anything from the harbour area. BUSINESS U.S. private hiring slows, services growth speeds up in April

U.S. companies hired workers at a slower but still-solid pace in April while the services sector grew more than expected, supporting the notion the economic expansion remains on track despite a weak first quarter, private reports released on Wednesday showed. An improving labor market and faster activity in services industries last month also buttressed traders’ expectations the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates further in the coming months. “In short, more evidence that the underlying trend in growth is not suddenly slowing, as suggested by the GDP data. If anything, the trend appears to be up, not down,” High Frequency Economics Chief U.S. Economist Jim O’Sullivan wrote in a research note. Last week, the government said gross domestic product increased 0.7 percent in the first quarter, the weakest pace in three years. Payrolls processor ADP said on Wednesday private employers added 177,000 jobs last month. It was the smallest gain since the 62,000 increase last October but slightly above the 175,000 median forecast among economists polled by Reuters. Private payroll gains for March were revised down to 255,000 from an originally reported 263,000 increase. ADP, which jointly developed its employment report with Moody’s Analytics, said private

Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan, Devotees Appeal for Salvation and Welfare

Buda Kliwon Pegatuwakan or commonly known as Buda Kliwon Pahang falling on Wednesday (May 10) is the end of the series of Galungan feast day. It is marked by withdrawing the penjor and burning it. Likewise, all the attributes of the penjor such as bakang, lamak, sampian and so on are burned. The ashes are put into a young ivory coconut and then buried in the house yard. Ashes of the penjor symbolize prosperity, so that on that day the Hindus plead to God to be blessed with fertility. However, before withdrawing the penjor, people must first put offerings or canang on the bamboo platform shrine that the series of Galungan feast day has already completed. It is resumed with masegeh procession, including at the location of penjor. Chairman of Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) Bali, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana said that the series of Galungan feast day ends on Buda Kliwon Pahang. Thus, the preaching of dharma has lasted for 42 days. During the series of Galungan is also known as the Uncal Balung. During that time, people generally abstain from organizing Panca Yadnya (five sacrifices) ritual activities, including wedding, except for pujawali or festival at temple or family or clan temple happening to fall during this period. ally go back to choosing auspicious days to perform Panca Yadnya ceremony, including wedding. Prof. Sudiana said that after the end of the Galungan series, people are reminded to always be able to apply the values ??of dharma (truth) and maintain victory against adharma. Venezuela death toll rises as foes protest Maduro’s power shakeup

MONACO — Monaco’s much-vaunted attack finally met its match against a supremely efficient Juventus team in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal on Wednesday. The Italian champion showed there is a considerable gulf in class between the two sides, winning 2-0 to strike a significant blow heading into next Tuesday’s return leg in Turin.

Monaco has scored an incredible 146 goals in an inspirational season that has made the rest of Europe take notice, but was found wanting both in terms of composure and tactical knowledge. At other times, cruelly exposed by the superior passing and clearly unsettled by the higher energy of the twotime European Cup winner. While 2015 runner-up Juventus is odds-on to reach another final, Monaco looks unlikely to reach only its second final after losing to Porto in 2004. It was clear to see that Monaco’s players were not used to the scenario unfolding in front of them, because they have not been pressured in this way by such an astute side. Even when Monaco enjoyed some good spells of flowing football, Juventus never panicked. “Tactically they were much better than us,” Monaco midfielder Fabinho said. “We couldn’t get a goal back, perhaps because we lacked experience.” Monaco’s players have been used to playing on the front foot, scoring 12 goals in four games against Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund in the two previous knockout rounds. But after missing early chances against Juventus, finding a Plan ‘B’ became far harder against a Juventus center-half pairing of Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, with their years of club and Italy experience together, and 39-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon still at the top of his game. While Buffon made excellent saves to frustrate Mbappe and top scorer Radamel Falcao, at the other end Gonzalo Higuain showed them how to finish with both Juventus goals. “Most importantly of all, we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal,” said Monaco’s 18-year-old striker Kylian Mbappe, who had a header and a shot saved early on. “They had two clear chances and scored two goals. It was a good experience for us, as it will allow us to progress.” Juventus knew when to close down, when to back off and — if needed — when to make things more physical. When Bonucci and Chiellini — Juventus teammates since 2010 — roughed things up, this clearly intimidated a young Monaco side unequal in terms of physical presence. Monaco’s frustration was compounded when coach Leonardo Jardim withdrew attacking midfielder Bernardo Silva with eight minutes left. Symbolically, it was like a boxer’s corner throwing in the towel. The Portugal international has been brilliant for most of the season, tormenting teams with his quick feet, probing passes and darting runs. Man City relying on Gabriel Jesus for positive ending in EPL MANCHESTER — It’s a nagging question that occupies the thoughts of Pep Guardiola. “What would have happened,” the Manchester City manager pondered recently, “if we’d been able to have Gabriel Jesus all season?” Perhaps City would still be in the English Premier League title race, instead of being caught up in a contest just to finish fourth. Perhaps City would have advanced beyond the last 16 of the Champions League, instead of getting eliminated at the earliest stage in Guardiola’s coaching career. It’s clear in every answer he gives about Gabriel Jesus that Guardiola thinks extremely highly of the 20-year-old striker, who completed his move from Palmeiras in December and only made his debut in late January. And it’s easy to see why. The Brazil international scored three goals in his first three league games, performing at such a level in training and in competitive play that he ousted top scorer Sergio Aguero from the starting lineup. Gabriel Jesus then broke his foot against Bournemouth on Feb. 13, ruling him out for 2½ months. Since his return, he made an instant impact and had a goal disallowed as a late substitute in the 0-0 draw against Manchester United, before scoring City’s equalizer in the 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough on Sunday. City has four league games left — starting with Crystal Palace at home on Saturday — to try to secure a place in next season’s Champions League and Gabriel Jesus is set to be Guardiola’s go-to attacker, especially after Aguero came off injured against Middlesbrough with an apparent groin injury. Aguero has scored 30 goals this season, and no other player has hit double figures, with City regularly spurning countless chances, much to Guardiola’s

chagrin. Yet even in his short time at the club, Gabriel Jesus has shown he offers a more rounded game than his fellow striker and may have as much of a striker’s instinct in the box. Guardiola has remarked how impressed he is by Gabriel Jesus’ quick adjustment to both the pace and intensity of the Premier League. “He is dynamic, he is aggressive,” Guardiola said about Gabriel Jesus in welcoming the striker back after injury. “His influence on his other teammates is huge.” And that’s the thing for Guardiola. While Aguero may be a scoring machine — he’s netted in 11 of his last 14 games — Gabriel Jesus makes the team operate more effectively as a whole with his pressing and energy from the front. In the four games he has started and played the full 90 minutes, against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup and West Ham, Swansea and Middlesbrough in the league, City has scored 11 goals. Before his injury, City’s front three of Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling gelled so well that Guardiola said they were “the future of the club.” That should be the front line at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, as City looks to avoid becoming the latest member of the top six to stumble against Palace. Sam Allardyce’s team has beaten Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool over the past month as it climbs away from relegation trouble, and has proven especially dangerous away from home with quick and elusive wingers Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend feeding striker Christian Benteke. City, though, has its own attacking triumvirate back together.
