Leno to leave NBC’s ‘Tonight Show’ next year Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — NBC announced a rare but rumored change in the longestrunning U.S. late-night show, replacing Jay Leno at “Tonight” with Jimmy Fallon and moving the iconic franchise back to New York City. Fallon will take over the talk show in about a year, the switch coinciding with NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage. Veteran “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels will take over as executive producer of “Tonight.” NBC made no announcement on who would replace Fallon at the 12:35 a.m. “Late Night” slot, although Seth Meyers of “Saturday Night Live” is considered a strong candidate. The change at “Tonight”
had been widely reported but not confirmed by the network until Wednesday. NBC reportedly just wrapped up negotiations with Fallon on a contract extension. Steve Burke, chief executive officer of NBC Universal, said the network is purposefully making the move when Leno is still at the top of the ratings, just as when Leno replaced Johnny Carson at “Tonight” in 1992. “Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent, and this is his time,” Burke said. Leno, in a statement, offered his congratulations to Fallon. “I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy,” he said. Fallon said: “I’m really excited to host a show that starts today instead of tomorrow.”
LOS ANGELES — Robert Redford does his most compelling work in some time as both actor and director in “The Company You Keep,” a tense yet admirably restrained thriller about a fugitive forced out of hiding after 30 years to prove his innocence. Adapted with clarity and intelligence by Lem Dobbs from Neil Gordon’s novel, and lent distinguishing heft by its roster of screen veterans, this gripping drama provides an absorbing reflection on the courage and cost of dissent. Recalling aspects of Sidney Lumet’s poignant “Running on Empty” from 1988, but with a more subdued emotional palette, the film opens with vintage-style news footage detailing charges against members of radical antiwar group the Weather Underground in the early 1970s for plotting to blow up buildings in multiple U.S. cities. Now we have to keep it there. Jimmy, don’t let it slip into sixth!” Leno joked, according to an NBC transcript. Fallon took a puckish approach in his monologue. “Welcome! Coverage from aggressive young Albany newspaper reporter Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf) links her to local civil rights lawyer Jim Grant (Redford), who declined to take Solarz’s case. Eager to impress his prickly editor (Stanley Tucci), Ben exploits his access to Diana (Anna Kendrick), a college hookup now working for the bureau. Despite warnings from her boss Cornelius (Terrence Howard) to back off, Ben persists, digging for insights. His legwork reveals that while Jim has long been a respected community member, raising his 11-yearold daughter Isabel (Jacqueline Evancho) alone since the death of his wife in an accident a year earlier, no record of him exists before 1979. Putting two and two together, Ben discovers, just ahead of the Feds, that Jim is Nick Sloan, another of the Michigan robbers. This establishing action is set up with methodical efficiency in Dobbs’ screenplay, gaining momentum when Jim/Nick whisks Isabel out of town and into the care of his brother (Chris Cooper) just as the FBI is closing in. Meanwhile, Ben continues to look for neat answers to messy questions. But a prison interview with Sharon gives him some understanding of the commitment and idealism of the ‘70s radicals. This affecting scene — Sharon shows regret for the mistakes that were made but refuses to repudiate her convictions — is played with perspicacity, toughness and compassion by Sarandon. Propelled by another moody score from Cliff Martinez (“Drive,” ‘’Contagion”) that adds a contemporary edge to Redford’s solidly conventional style, the remainder of the film plays out in pursuit mode.

DENPASAR - Various problems still haunt Bali starting from the increasingly sluggish agriculture and narrowing farmland due to land conversion. Similarly, there are degradation of Balinese culture, inequality of development distribution and many dropout students becoming a heavy burden for Bali. To solve the problems, Bali needs a change and a leader really wishing to serve Bali whole-heartedly. It was revealed in the discussion entitled Drinking Coffee Together at Bali Coffee Warung 63, Jalan Veteran Denpasar, Monday (Apr 1). The figures attending the event consisted of Dr. Nyoman Sukandia, academician from the Faculty of Law, Udayana University; IB Komang Mahardika, a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, Warmadewa University (Unwar); Prof. Dr. I Wayan Windia, a lecturer at Faculty
of Agriculture, Udayana University (Unud); Prof. Sri Darma, DBA., Rector of the Undiknas University; AA Gede Raka, a lecturer at Faculty of Social and Political Studies, Ngurah Rai University (Unrai) Denpasar; Ida Bagus Jelantik, an academician from the Udayana University; Nyoman Sentana, a figure of Badung community; and some other figures like Ida Bagus Tarmiana, Ida Bagus Indra Prasta
and Ketut Gede Catur Widiarta. Dr. Nyoman Sukandia said the challenges of Bali ahead were very hard and many problems could not have been resolved by the present leader of Bali. To that end, Bali needed a change. “Bali needs a visionary leader that can manage Bali for the sake of our children and grandchildren in the future, not for the benefits of current leaders,” he said. According to him, Bali needed
a leader that understood about the Balinese customs and culture. Leader of Bali should be born, grew up and lived in Bali, so that it would ontologically knew about the real conditions of Bali. “Bali has been known all over the world because of its village, custom and culture. Their presence must be maintained and even empowered. There must be no discourse from the Bali’s leader regarding the dwarfing of customary village, let alone its dissolution. We thoroughly avoid such things, even though the customary village is in trouble,” he said. He hoped in the future, in accordance with Hindu philosophy, Balinese leader could balance the development of Northern Bali and
Southern Bali. “Future leader of Bali must take bold move to save the interests of Balinese people and Bali. Bali’s leader should be progressive, and proactively absorb the people’s aspirations,” he concluded. Meanwhile, the community leader of Badung Nyoman Sentana said that Bali needed a change. To that end, it was required a change of leadership that would be able to build a better Bali, realize sustainable Bali and balance the development in Bali. “Bali needs a leader that can frequently come down to meet their people. Bali needs a change and the change can be made by Balinese people by electing the appropriate leader for Bali,” he said. Continued on page 6

Next leader of Bali must be able to mingle with community
Leader of Bali must have high integrity, honesty and willingness to understand about the feeling of community. Also, it must be able to strengthen the identity of Balinese culture, not on the contrary, to behave arrogant toward Balinese customs and culture. A leader of Bali must also be able to echo back the Balinese indigenous wisdom and implement it into a real action, not just in a discourse. These are key points delivered by three academicians, namely Prof. Dr. I Made Bakta, I Ketut Murdana and Dr. Wayan Mudana, Monday (Mar 1). RECTOR of the Udayana University Prof. Bakta said the leader of Bali in the future should have high integrity, honesty and impeccable track record. The only uncompromising thing for the leader of Bali was that it had to understand about the spirit of Balinese culture as the basis for the future development of Bali. To deliver Balinese toward a better condition, the leader was obliged to develop holistically, both in physical and non-physical, spiritual and intellectual aspect. On that account, the leader of Bali should rigorously explore and animate the identity of Bali. “If a leader of Bali does not know about them all, it is even feared to drown Bali in the future,” added the Deputy Rector of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, I Ketut Murdana. According to both academicians, the leader of Bali should not ‘sell’ the principles, concepts and indigenous wisdom of Bali for shortterm interests. Besides, it should be required to understand about the concepts of Hindu leadership and implement them into the real action consistently. “If implemented sincerely, the eight major teachings of the Hindu leadership will lead the leader to reach the ideal of prosperous Bali,” said Bakta. Murdana also asked the leader of Bali to keep its promise. The promises and programs proposed during the campaign should be realized as soon as it was entrusted to become the leader. “If the promise is broken, the people of Bali are entitled to impeach it,” affirmed Bakta. An academician from the Undiksha, Dr. Wayan Mudana, said the leader should maintain Balinese culture not through discourses, but through consistent action by getting involved in person in the movement of the culture itself. “A leader must be consistent where it will keep its talk all the times,” said Mudana,
a lecturer at the Faculty of Social Studies in the Undiksha. According to Mudana, at least there were three major forms of Balinese culture. They were the level of supra-ideology containing the norms and values; the social system such as customary village, subak (irrigation cooperative) and other agencies; and material culture consisting of physical relics that should be preserved. “The three elements must be maintained to create a sustainable Bali,” he said. He said in the context of maintaining Balinese culture, people would not like to see a leader talking
nonsense only. Public wanted their leader to move directly with them. For instance, when the community held religious ritual, a leader should make its time get involved in the ritual. Thus, aside from being close to the public, it would also know how the community work together to keep their religion, customs and culture. By engaging in person, a leader would be able to feel what perceived by the public. “If a leader can perceive things in person what people do, then the leader can take the right decision. It will not be a selfish decision, but the decision that advances the community,” he said. (ole)

As much as 15 men and mostly elderly, were sentence 5 months prison with eight months trial after guilty for hunting deer by Judge Ketut Wiarta, SH. The 15 Tejakula, Buleleng men were proven to have hunted at protected forest Munduk Pule, Pempatan Village, Rendang, Karangasem. They all accepted their punishment including General Prosecutor Eka Sabana, SH at Amlapura Court. This was less than the expected 6 months and 10 months trial. Besides that they were fined IDR 20,000 each to deduct 3 months jail and have to pay for their acts IDR 2,500. They also have violated section 40 paragraph 2 Law No 5 year 1992 on Conservation and Ecosys-
tem also section 50 Law No 41 year 1999 on Forestry. Some of the accused such as Ketut Wardi, Nyoman Alit, Wayan Wandres, Nyoman Resa, Gede Ringgin and Wayan Seneng admitted to have purposely gone into the forest to hunt protected animals. At first they were looking for monkeys yet their five of their hunt dogs came with 3 kg young deer without its head. It is suspected that the head has been taken off by the dogs. Thinking of having a feast with it, the 15 hunters were then reported by locals and captured by police, besides crescent, five dogs and guns with tens of bullets in it, accused also brought a number of nets to capture the monkeys they were looking for. Clean water services in Badung judged not well managed Mangupura (Bali Post)—
A number of targets of the Millennium Developments Goals (MDGs) in Badung have been achieved well. However, one of the vital components, namely clean water services, has not yet been well organized. The Regent of Badung, AA Gde Agung, in the plenary session of the Badung House held on Tuesday (Apr 2) admitted that water services in Badung still did not comply with the MDGs. “In terms of the MDGs, Badung is excellent, but not in terms of clean water,” said Gde Agung. In order to meet the MDGs components, the endeavors to meet the clean water needs for the community of Badung continued to be performed. At the moment, Gde Agung said the measures taken had already been on the right track. Related to the matter of clean water services, Chairman of Commission B of the Badung House, I Made Sumerta, said on Wednesday (Apr 3) that government in the near future should make a breakthrough that could really be enjoyed by the community. Comprehensive improvement should be done to the utilities. For instance, the South Kuta community needs for clean water was very urgent. All this time, many of them still experienced clean water crisis. As consequence, some of them were forced to
purchase water from tank truck. Those having subscribed to the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) also frequently complained because the water often did not run. “Like right now, the water in Pecatu has not run for about two weeks. If running, it only happens at night,” said the PDI-P politician from Pecatu. In terms of water supply or clean water discharge, the South Kuta area had actually been very adequate. However, in terms of infrastructure or network utilities it was not sufficient so that many people were facing clean water crisis. Sumerta said it might not happen. No matter how much fund required, the government should attempt to meet it. And it should be carried out from right now. “The water discharge is good, but it lacks of utility. It means the anticipation of government is a bit slow. It should have been anticipated since a long time, while it will be different case if the problem lies in the water discharge or water source,” said Sumerta. In building the utility grid later on, the government was required to do it more seriously. The handling should be comprehensive, unlike today that seemed to be patchy. “It is required the good will of government. Moreover, the South Badung area has been synonymous with tourism. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. people know that the colors they choose — and leave out — are critical ingredients in their works’ success, no matter the medium. Color done well is captivating. Color done badly? It’s just bad. Or drab. Yet a color tweak may be all it takes to turn up a piece’s vibrancy and magic. An eye for color is both intuitive and learned, say the experts. Kaffe Fassett has spent a lifetime experimenting. The septuagenarian is exuberant with color in his embroidery, knitting and fabric designs. He’s known for bold florals, fruits and vegetables, and geometric shapes — in sweaters, knitted coats and needlepoint. The author of 15 books, his latest, “Kaffe Fassett Quilts: Shots and Stripes” (STC Craft, 2013), goes minimal with vibrant swaths of color — a simplicity that’s a stretch for him. A Londoner for 40 years who was born and raised in California, Fassett eschews conventional color rules, although he subscribes to a few intuitively. “I left art school the minute the color wheel came out,” he muses. “I thought that was the work of the devil.” When Fassett talks about har-
mony and “bounce,” his language is as energetic as his artwork. “Pick up one color and stick it next to another and see if you get a bounce from it,” says the textile artist. “Colors can either dampen each other or they can light each other up. It’s just fantastic to see color that is pulsating. It’s just vibrating with life. Other times, the most wonderful color is dropping dead because it’s in the company of something that’s killing it.” “I want to make the colors lush,” Fassett continues. “I’m after the glow all the time.” During the quilting workshops he teaches in the United States and elsewhere, including online, he recommends using myriad shades of the same color to create depth and harmony. “Whenever possible, you have 10 shades of something rather
than just one,” says Fassett, who is inspired in part by faded, antique carpets. For example, while knitters are usually told to adhere to a single dye lot when buying multiple yarn skeins for a project, Fassett recommends working with several dye lots. “I never had dye-lot angst,” he says. “Just the opposite. I loved when a color ran out.” Also, stick to a color theme but make it “pop” with little surprises of a different color. That ensures a piece won’t become muddy or drab from a color theme’s overuse. For example, if you’re working in warm tones of red and orange, inject a little cool blue. This works in quilting and in other artistic media, such as painting. “It can go very mushy if you don’t have enough vivid differences,” says Fassett.

NEW YORK — An Indianborn fashion designer already serving 59 years to life in California for molesting would-be models was sentenced in New York on Tuesday to five years in a similar case in a courtroom full of his supporters who blew him kisses. Anand Jon Alexander, 39, admitted to one count of criminal sexual act in February for sexually assaulting a woman he baited with the promise of modeling work. He was named a high-risk sex offender and sexually violent predator Tuesday. Outside court, his sister Sanjana Jon said she worked with him for years and she knows he’s innocent. “Anand Jon is innocent and he will prove it. The truth will come out,” she said. “This is an innocent person who is being victimized.” Alexander had initially been charged with preying on a dozen women, but the figure then dropped to three. Prosecutors said some of the victims were minors, and some were drugged when he forced himself on them. Some of the victims had already testified in the California case and Assistant District Attorney Maxine Rosenthal said prosecutors offered the plea deal
so that the women wouldn’t have to testify again and because he is already serving substantial prison time. She said the victims were OK with the plea deal. “They were satisfied due to the length of the sentence in California,” Rosenthal said. He was transferred from a California prison to New York during the case. His prison time in New York amounts to time served, so no years will be tacked onto his California sentence, Alexander’s attorney said. Alexander, who wore a form-fitting gray suit and pink shirt with a vest, disputed the reason for the deal in court but didn’t elaborate. “Whatever their reasons for offering the plea were, my reasons were different,” he said. Alexander’s attorney said that he admitted to the crime so he could get evidence and materials from New York prosecutors needed to help overturn his conviction in California. Judge Cassandra Mullen had to ask Alexander several times if he had anything to say about his sentencing. He finally replied: “I’d like to thank everyone for being here.” He did not apologize to the victim, a common occurrence at sentencings.

“With the government plan to release 500 containers of fruit to market, the Bali government should not just wait. We hope it soon asks (central) government to release the fruits before Kuningan festivity so that the price can be back to normal,” said Gede Suardana, the owner of Apple Mart minimarket on Tuesday. According to him, such measure was essential to stabilize the price of fruit in the market. “With the scarcity of imported fruits, the price of local fruit soars beyond the fairness and it is not comparable in terms of quality. It’s a pity that consumers can only surrender,” he said. He mentioned Gita Wirjawan was trying to overcome so that the imported fruits and vegetables would not experience price fluctuations. Moreover, the messy import administration had occurred at Surabaya Port within the past three months initially kindled by the rules on the Recommendation of Horticultural Product Import (RIPH) issued late. Squished by car, mother and baby died
A tragic accident occurred at Raya Sembung Street, Mengwi, Badung last Wednesday (4/4) around 2.30 pm local time. A pickup car crashed to a tree caused a mother and a baby as passengers died having their bodies squished by the front of the car. Victims were Ni Luh Maherni (35) and her six months old baby, Komang Wahyu Putrawan. The driver, her husband, Hendra (42), was safe. Based on locals’ information the incident started when the pickup was coming from the North towards the South in high speed. A few meters after the cemetery of Banjar Belang, Sembung, Mengwi, the car crashed. Mae, a shop owner nearby, stated during the incident the road was empty and slippery as rain just poured. “Or it could’ve been caused by the driver was sleepy, I am not sure,” Made explained. He and other locals tried to help Maherni and the baby yet they were no longer breathing. Aid came quite long around 1 hour. There were wounds on the forehead and Maherni’s feet stuck. Badung A & E doctor, dr. Gede Suputra, stated the three victims were brought to Kapal Hospital at 3 pm local time yet sadly only Hendra was safe and had light wound on the head and face. (san)

KABUL, Afghanistan — Insurgents wearing Afghan army uniforms launched a suicide attack and stormed a courthouse Wednesday in a failed bid to free Taliban inmates, killing at least 44 people, half of them shot in the basement. Nine attackers were killed. The attack — one of the deadliest in the more than 11-year-old war — began about 8:30 a.m. when nine men wearing suicide vests drove into the capital of Farah province in western Afghanistan, evading checkpoints by using army vehicles, according to the provincial police chief. The standoff ended some eight hours later when the last gunman was killed. Insurgents have stepped up assaults targeting the Farah provincial government in recent months as they vie for control of an area bordering Iran to the west and Helmand province to the east. Farah has become increasingly volatile as the site of a growing drug trade after military offensives in neighboring areas. “The Taliban seem to be exploiting the opium harvest and the unpopular eradication efforts by the government to further establish their presence,” Fabrizio Foschini, of the independent research group Afghan Analysts Network, said in a recent blog. Militants have staged high-profile complex attacks across Afghanistan in a bid to show their strength and undermine confidence in the central government. Wednesday’s assault was among the most brutal for civilians, raising fears of deteriorating security as international combat forces withdraw by
the end of 2014 and hand over control to Afghan security forces. The attack began when two assailants blew themselves up inside one of the vehicles while the others jumped out and ran toward the courthouse and prosecutor’s office, provincial police chief Agha Noor Kemtoz said. Guards opened fire, killing one of the attackers, as the others engaged in a fierce gunbattle that left civil servants and government officials holed up in their offices. Other civilians fled to the basement of the courthouse, where gunmen found them and killed 21 people, officials said. Kemtoz said the attack aimed to free more than a dozen Taliban prisoners who were being transferred to the courthouse for trial, which had not yet started. “Definitely the plan was to free the prisoners with this attack, but thank God, they did not succeed,” he said. “All the prisoners are accounted for.” Deputy provincial governor Yonus Rasouli, however, said one of the inmates had escaped. He said the suspects had been arrested in different places and faced a range of charges, including planting roadside bombs. Provincial Gov. Akram Akhpewak said those killed included 34 civilians,
including judges and prosecutors, 10 members of the security forces and the nine attackers. Dr. Abdul Hakim Rasouli, chief of the Farah hospital, said 80 people also were wounded. Yet the Englishman’s ramshackle existence took a horrifying turn when he and his wife set a fire that killed six of their children. Prosecutors said it was an attempt to influence a custody battle that “went disastrously and tragically wrong.” The May 2012 deaths and the twisting saga that ensued have shocked Britain and sparked debate on everything from sexism to Britain’s welfare system. A judge said she would sentence Mick and Mairead Philpott on Thursday for their manslaughter convictions in the deaths of Jayden, Jesse, Jack, John, Jade and Duwayne, aged 5 to 13. Prosecutors said the couple hatched a plan to start a gasoline-fueled fire and then rescue the children, pinning blame on Philpott’s mistress so he could gain advantage in their child custody battle. JAKARTA - Anti-graft agency leaders have been reprimanded following confirmation that an investigation document has been leaked. The chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Abraham Samad, and KPK deputy Adnan Pandu Praja have been found violating the code of ethics in connection with the leak of the investigation document of Anas Urbaningrum, the former ruling Democrat Party general chairman, the ethics committee investigating the case stated here on Wednesday when announcing the results of its investigation. Anas Urbaningrum has now been named suspect in a corruption case linked to the Hambalang sports complex development project and because of that he has also resigned from the post of the ruling party`s chief. In view of the incident the ethics committee has issued a reprimand to Abraham Saman and Adnan Praja, committee chief Anies Baswedan said. He said the committee has also asked the two to improve their behavior including honoring the principles of collegiality and openness and differentiating between personal and professional relations in carrying out their duties. The two however were not proven leaking the document. “The one who has leaked the document is Wiwin Suwandi who is the secretary of Abraham Samad,” committee member Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean said. Anies said no indication showing involvement of the KPK leadership in the leak of the document that has caused an uproar in the community. Regarding Wiwin`s motive, Anies said it was hatred to the corrupter.

BANDA ACEH - Thousands of demonstrators rallied in Indonesia’s Aceh on Thursday in support of local leaders’ bid to adopt a separatist flag as the staunchly Islamic province’s official emblem. A 3,000-strong crowd, including many women wearing the Islamic head scarf, waved the flag -- a white crescent and star on a red background -- during the protest in provincial capital Banda Aceh, police and witnesses said. Soldiers and tanks were deployed as the Indonesian Interior Minister Gamawan Fauzi met local leaders to demand they reverse the local parliament’s decision allowing use of the flag in the country’s only province with Islamic sharia law. The flag was used by the now defunct Free Aceh Movement (GAM) which fought a 30-year separatist war against the Indonesian state until a peace deal was struck in 2005,
and the row over the emblem is being seen as a test of the accord. After the local parliament last month passed a bylaw allowing use of the flag, Jakarta, which must approve laws made locally, protested and has demanded the decision be reversed. Under Indonesian law the use of separatist flags is illegal. But the provincial government, led by former rebel Zaini Abdullah who has vowed to implement stricter sharia law, insists that under the peace accord Aceh can use whichever emblem it likes. At Thursday’s demonstration, protestor Hendra Fauzi told AFP: “We have the right to decide our
own flag... and this is a test of whether the government will stick to the accord.” It was the second rally in Banda Aceh this week in support of the flag. More than 15,000 people died in more than three decades of unrest during the oil- and gas-rich province’s separatist struggle. Sporadic politically-motivated violence continues in Aceh. The 2005 agreement between Jakarta and the rebels, which grants special autonomy to Aceh such as the right to use sharia law, was also made in the spirit of rebuilding the area after the 2004 tsunami that killed tens of thousands in the province.

The OM midfielder has promised to end right now the publication of any invidious comment against Thiago Silva.” PSG threatened action against Barton on Wednesday after the Olympique Marseille midfielder likened Thiago Silva to a transsexual and called him an “overweight ladyboy” on his Twitter feed, comments that also drew condemnation from gay activists. Barton, who has more than two million followers on Twitter, has been involved in a spat with Thiago Silva this week following disparaging comments the Briton made about some of the PSG player’s international team mates.
Thiago Silva has not responded on Twitter. The French federation said its Ethics Committee would take no action because the incident did not happen on a football pitch but committee president Laurent Davenas later told Reuters by

ASTANA, Kazakhstan — The Czech Republic will start a Davis Cup tie without the formidable Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek for the first time in three years in the quarterfinal against host Kazakhstan on Friday. Berdych was injured and Stepanek was rested from the opening singles. The latter hasn’t played since January, when he had a neck operation. He’s been saved for the doubles on Saturday, and may play in the reverse singles on Sunday on the indoor clay-court. Without Berdych and Stepanek for only the second time in a decade, the Czechs will send out Jan Hajek against Mikhail Kukushkin, followed by Lukas Rosol against Andrey Golubev. KABUL, Afghanistan — Insurgents wearing Afghan army uniforms launched a suicide attack and stormed a courthouse Wednesday in a failed bid to free Taliban inmates, killing at least 44 people, half of them shot in the basement. Nine attackers were killed. The attack — one of the deadliest in the more than 11-year-old war — began about 8:30 a.m. when nine men wearing suicide vests drove into the capital of Farah province in western Afghanistan, evading checkpoints by using army vehicles, according to the provincial police chief. The standoff ended some eight hours later when the last gunman was killed. Insurgents have stepped up assaults targeting the Farah provincial government in recent months as they vie for control of an area bordering Iran to the west and Helmand province to the east. Farah has become increasingly volatile as the site of a growing drug trade after military offensives in neighboring areas. “The Taliban seem to be exploiting the opium harvest and the unpopular eradication efforts by the government to further establish their presence,” Fabrizio Foschini, of the independent research group Afghan Analysts Network, said in a recent blog. Militants have staged high-profile complex attacks across Afghanistan in a bid to show their strength and undermine confidence in the central government. Wednesday’s assault was among the most brutal for civilians, raising fears of deteriorating security as international combat forces withdraw by
the end of 2014 and hand over control to Afghan security forces. The attack began when two assailants blew themselves up inside one of the vehicles while the others jumped out and ran toward the courthouse and prosecutor’s office, provincial police chief Agha Noor Kemtoz said. Guards opened fire, killing one of the attackers, as the others engaged in a fierce gunbattle that left civil servants and government officials holed up in their offices. Other civilians fled to the basement of the courthouse, where gunmen found them and killed 21 people, officials said. Kemtoz said the attack aimed to free more than a dozen Taliban prisoners who were being transferred to the courthouse for trial, which had not yet started. “Definitely the plan was to free the prisoners with this attack, but thank God, they did not succeed,” he said. “All the prisoners are accounted for.” Deputy provincial governor Yonus Rasouli, however, said one of the inmates had escaped. He said the suspects had been arrested in different places and faced a range of charges, including planting roadside bombs. Provincial Gov. Akram Akhpewak said those killed included 34 civilians,
including judges and prosecutors, 10 members of the security forces and the nine attackers. Dr. Abdul Hakim Rasouli, chief of the Farah hospital, said 80 people also were wounded. Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message sent to reporters, although some witnesses questioned whether the assailants were Afghans. Provincial lawmaker Humaira Ayobi said a recent police operation targeting the drug trade may have been a factor in the audacious attack. It was the deadliest strike since Oct. 26, when a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a mosque packed with senior regional officials in the northern Afghan province of Faryab, killing 41 people on a major Muslim holiday. In Kabul, meanwhile, Afghanistan’s intelligence chief Asadullah Khalid returned to Kabul on Wednesday nearly four months after he was seriously wounded by a Taliban suicide bomber posing as a messenger of peace. Billboards in the capital welcomed home the director of the National Directorate of Security, saying he has fully recovered and “is ready to continue his duty to provide peace, security and prosperity to his homeland.”
LONDON — Mick Philpott presented himself as an amiable rascal with an unorthodox lifestyle and a rambunctious brood of children — 17 in all, with five women. Yet the Englishman’s ramshackle existence took a horrifying turn when he and his wife set a fire that killed six of their children. Prosecutors said it was an attempt to influence a custody battle that “went disastrously and tragically wrong.” The May 2012 deaths and the twisting saga that ensued have shocked Britain and sparked debate on everything from sexism to Britain’s welfare system. A judge said she would sentence Mick and Mairead Philpott on Thursday for their manslaughter convictions in the deaths of Jayden, Jesse, Jack, John, Jade and Duwayne, aged 5 to 13. Prosecutors said the couple hatched a plan to start a gasoline-fueled fire and then rescue the children, pinning blame on Philpott’s mistress so he could gain advantage in their child custody battle. The plan went wrong within minutes, because the fire was far bigger than expected and the father was unable to smash a window to get in, prosecutors said. The couple and a friend who helped them, Paul Mosley, were all convicted of manslaughter this week at England’s Nottingham Crown Court. Before the fire, Philpott, now 56, was a local celebrity — nicknamed “Shameless Mick” after a television program about a disreputable working-class clan — who had appeared on a daytime talk show defending his lifestyle. JAKARTA - Anti-graft agency leaders have been reprimanded following confirmation that an investigation document has been leaked. The chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Abraham Samad, and KPK deputy Adnan Pandu Praja have been found violating the code of ethics in connection with the leak of the investigation document of Anas Urbaningrum, the former ruling Democrat Party general chairman, the ethics committee investigating the case stated here on Wednesday when announcing the results of its investigation. Anas Urbaningrum has now been named suspect in a corruption case linked to the Hambalang sports complex development project and because of that he has also resigned from the post of the ruling party`s chief. In view of the incident the ethics committee has issued a reprimand to Abraham Saman and Adnan Praja, committee chief Anies Baswedan said. He said the committee has also asked the two to improve their behavior including honoring the principles of collegiality and openness and differentiating between personal and professional relations in carrying out their duties. The two however were not proven leaking the document. “The one who has leaked the document is Wiwin Suwandi who is the secretary of Abraham Samad,” committee member Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean said. Anies said no indication showing involvement of the KPK leadership in the leak of the document that has caused an uproar in the community. Soldiers and tanks were deployed as the Indonesian Interior Minister Gamawan Fauzi met local leaders to demand they reverse the local parliament’s decision allowing use of the flag in the country’s only province with Islamic sharia law. The flag was used by the now defunct Free Aceh Movement (GAM) which fought a 30-year separatist war against the Indonesian state until a peace deal was struck in 2005,
and the row over the emblem is being seen as a test of the accord. After the local parliament last month passed a bylaw allowing use of the flag, Jakarta, which must approve laws made locally, protested and has demanded the decision be reversed. Under Indonesian law the use of separatist flags is illegal. The dealership opened this week in a cluster of buildings surrounded by farmland on the edge of the capital, offering a range of small aircraft aimed at business executives and priced at up to 50 million yuan ($8 million). DENPASAR - Being pessimistic about the discourse on hotel room rate standardization proposed by Bali government, the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali even prepared a new scheme. Chairman of the PHRI Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati (Cok Ace) said that his party would set the lowest standard to define a standard hotel room rate. “It’s hard to make the room rate standardization because it is the matter of business. Nevertheless, we have a calculation by using a minimum standard. For instance, a three-star hotel may not be sold as the budget hotel,” revealed Cok Ace when met in Denpasar. According to him, hoteliers were allowed to raise the room rates as high as possible, but they were prohibited to sell hotel rooms below the minimum standard set forth. This measure was to avoid unfair competition among the hoteliers. “It’s okay if hoteliers raise the room rate as high as possible. However, they are not allowed to reduce the rates below the minimum standard. We set forth the minimal standards to avoid competitions. People doing business casually will be difficult to invite to competition, right?” he asked. He added, aside from being faced with unfair competition, the lineups of accommodation businessmen in Bali were also confronted with the imposition of new basic power tariff (TDL) validated from April 1, 2013. Surely, it made the employers in various sectors dizzy. It was the second increase, after the one made on January 1 as the first of several phases of increases imposed this year, with a total of 15 percent. “The increase in power tariff was informed last year. Indeed, it seems difficult. But the government already told the businessman a year earlier than ever before that usually made suddenly although it is not the right moment to do so right now,” he said. It happened because the obligation of employers to pay the new power tariff was not accompanied with the right of businessmen to get protection from the freedom to compete. “We are ready to accept the increase, but our right as businessmen should be protected. But, with the increasing number of rooms nearly 20 percent has caused the lack of balance between supply and demand,” he said. As known, the number of hotel room has reached 75,000 and it has exceeded the needs. As consequence, it has caused the average hotel occupancy rate in Bali to only reach 62 percent in 2012. Squished by car, mother and baby died
A tragic accident occurred at Raya Sembung Street, Mengwi, Badung last Wednesday (4/4) around 2.30 pm local time. A pickup car crashed to a tree caused a mother and a baby as passengers died having their bodies squished by the front of the car. Victims were Ni Luh Maherni (35) and her six months old baby, Komang Wahyu Putrawan. The driver, her husband, Hendra (42), was safe. Based on locals’ information the incident started when the pickup was coming from the North towards the South in high speed. A few meters after the cemetery of Banjar Belang, Sembung, Mengwi, the car crashed. Mae, a shop owner nearby, stated during the incident the road was empty and slippery as rain just poured. “Or it could’ve been caused by the driver was sleepy, I am not sure,” Made explained. He and other locals tried to help Maherni and the baby yet they were no longer breathing. Aid came quite long around 1 hour. There were wounds on the forehead and Maherni’s feet stuck. Badung A & E doctor, dr. Gede Suputra, stated the three victims were brought to Kapal Hospital at 3 pm local time yet sadly only Hendra was safe and had light wound on the head and face. (san)

The Head of Jembrana Maritime, Fisheries and Forestry Agency, I Made Dwi Maharimbawa, accompanied by Made Aryana said the agency wanted the assets to be utilized maximally. Previously, the ice factory was faced with obstacle in the form of less adequate power. However, since 2012 the power supply and power grid had been added. Currently, there had been indeed no party managing it, even though had been promoted through website. As for the shipyard, it remained slightly out of order and was almost not buried in the sand. The agency expected the asset management could involve a third party such as the Regional Enterprise (Perusda) so that they could run. “The House asked us and the Regional Enterprise to examine in order the assets can function and create job opportunities,” he explained. Kaffe Fassett has spent a lifetime experimenting. The septuagenarian is exuberant with color in his embroidery, knitting and fabric designs. He’s known for bold florals, fruits and vegetables, and geometric shapes — in sweaters, knitted coats and needlepoint. The author of 15 books, his latest, “Kaffe Fassett Quilts: Shots and Stripes” (STC Craft, 2013), goes minimal with vibrant swaths of color — a simplicity that’s a stretch for him. A Londoner for 40 years who was born and raised in California, Fassett eschews conventional color rules, although he subscribes to a few intuitively. “I left art school the minute the color wheel came out,” he muses. “I thought that was the work of the devil.” When Fassett talks about har-
mony and “bounce,” his language is as energetic as his artwork. “Pick up one color and stick it next to another and see if you get a bounce from it,” says the textile artist. “Colors can either dampen each other or they can light each other up. It’s just fantastic to see color that is pulsating. It’s just vibrating with life. Other times, the most wonderful color is dropping dead because it’s in the company of something that’s killing it.” “I want to make the colors lush,” Fassett continues. “I’m after the glow all the time.” During the quilting workshops he teaches in the United States and elsewhere, including online, he recommends using myriad shades of the same color to create depth and harmony. “Whenever possible, you have 10 shades of something rather
than just one,” says Fassett, who is inspired in part by faded, antique carpets. For example, while knitters are usually told to adhere to a single dye lot when buying multiple yarn skeins for a project, Fassett recommends working with several dye lots. “I never had dye-lot angst,” he says. “Just the opposite. I loved when a color ran out.” Also, stick to a color theme but make it “pop” with little surprises of a different color. That ensures a piece won’t become muddy or drab from a color theme’s overuse. For example, if you’re working in warm tones of red and orange, inject a little cool blue. This works in quilting and in other artistic media, such as painting. “It can go very mushy if you don’t have enough vivid differences,” says Fassett.

PARIS — The French fashion house Mugler says Lady Gaga’s stylist Nicola Formichetti is leaving the company where he’s been creative director since 2011. In a statement sent Tuesday to The Associated Press, Formichetti said, “I have had a great time working in Paris with Mugler over the last two years. It was a challenge to re-invigorate the house for a new generation.” Formichetti’s womenwear debut attracted a new legion of fans to the Parisian house when he enlisted superstar Lady Gaga to tread the catwalk for the fall-winter 2011 show. He explored space-age themes in his designs and dropped “Thierry” from the house name. Mugler Director General Joel Palix said Formichetti succeeded in “bringing his energy to the brand” founded by Thierry Mugler in the 1970s.

Designer gets 5 years in NY for preying on model Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — An Indianborn fashion designer already serving 59 years to life in California for molesting would-be models was sentenced in New York on Tuesday to five years in a similar case in a courtroom full of his supporters who blew him kisses. Anand Jon Alexander, 39, admitted to one count of criminal sexual act in February for sexually assaulting a woman he baited with the promise of modeling work. He was named a high-risk sex offender and sexually violent predator Tuesday. Outside court, his sister Sanjana Jon said she worked with him for years and she knows he’s innocent. “Anand Jon is innocent and he will prove it. The truth will come out,” she said. “This is an innocent person who is being victimized.” Alexander had initially been charged with preying on a dozen women, but the figure then dropped to three. Prosecutors said some of the victims were minors, and some were drugged when he forced himself on them. Some of the victims had already testified in the California case and Assistant District Attorney Maxine Rosenthal said prosecutors offered the plea deal
so that the women wouldn’t have to testify again and because he is already serving substantial prison time. She said the victims were OK with the plea deal. “They were satisfied due to the length of the sentence in California,” Rosenthal said. He was transferred from a California prison to New York during the case. His prison time in New York amounts to time served, so no years will be tacked onto his California sentence, Alexander’s attorney said. Alexander, who wore a form-fitting gray suit and pink shirt with a vest, disputed the reason for the deal in court but didn’t elaborate. “Whatever their reasons for offering the plea were, my reasons were different,” he said. Alexander’s attorney said that he admitted to the crime so he could get evidence and materials from New York prosecutors needed to help overturn his conviction in California. Judge Cassandra Mullen had to ask Alexander several times if he had anything to say about his sentencing. He finally replied: “I’d like to thank everyone for being here.” He did not apologize to the victim, a common occurrence at sentencings.

“With the government plan to release 500 containers of fruit to market, the Bali government should not just wait. We hope it soon asks (central) government to release the fruits before Kuningan festivity so that the price can be back to normal,” said Gede Suardana, the owner of Apple Mart minimarket on Tuesday. According to him, such measure was essential to stabilize the price of fruit in the market. “With the scarcity of imported fruits, the price of local fruit soars beyond the fairness and it is not comparable in terms of quality. It’s a pity that consumers can only surrender,” he said. He mentioned Gita Wirjawan was trying to overcome so that the imported fruits and vegetables would not experience price fluctuations. Moreover, the messy import administration had occurred at Surabaya Port within the past three months initially kindled by the rules on the Recommendation of Horticultural Product Import (RIPH) issued late. Minister of Trade said his party had delegated Director General of Domestic Trade, Srie Agustina, to coordinate the matter with the Ministry of Agriculture, Suswono.

enter into Bali. Unfortunately, Wisnu Wardana could not specify the imported fruits considered to have contained chemicals and the amount distributed across Bali. Later on, imported fruits coming into Bali would be examined first in the laboratory of Bali Agriculture

Denpasar - An Australian woman is facing up to nine years in jail after she was arrested on Bali accused of teaming up with a gang to burgle her ex-boyfriend’s house and steal his car, police said Wednesday. Sandra Sheed, 42, who has lived on the resort island for more than 20 years, allegedly used a duplicate key last month to get into the property of fellow Australian Stephen Blackwell, 46, accompanied by five men, local police chief Ambariyadi Wijaya said. They took “a car, a television, a DVD player and many other things”, he told AFP, adding that Blackwell’s maid was in the house at the time of the burglary and alerted her boss, who was
away in Australia. Sheed was arrested on Saturday. Sheed and Blackwell had been going out for five months when she moved into his house in early March, Wijaya said. But just several days later they had a row and Blackwell split up with her. “Under the Indonesian criminal code, she could face up to nine years jail if she is found guilty,” the police chief said. The five men are still on the run and Sheed has refused to identify them, he said. Foreigners are frequently arrested on the popular holiday island, but normally for drugs offences. Some end up being imprisoned in the island’s notorious Kerobokan jail under Indonesia’s tough drugs laws, and several are on death row.

Next leader of Bali must be able to mingle with community
Leader of Bali must have high integrity, honesty and willingness to understand about the feeling of community. Also, it must be able to strengthen the identity of Balinese culture, not on the contrary, to behave arrogant toward Balinese customs and culture. A leader of Bali must also be able to echo back the Balinese indigenous wisdom and implement it into a real action, not just in a discourse. These are key points delivered by three academicians, namely Prof. Dr. I Made Bakta, I Ketut Murdana and Dr. Wayan Mudana, Monday (Mar 1). RECTOR of the Udayana University Prof. Bakta said the leader of Bali in the future should have high integrity, honesty and impeccable track record. The only uncompromising thing for the leader of Bali was that it had to understand about the spirit of Balinese culture as the basis for the future development of Bali. To deliver Balinese toward a better condition, the leader was obliged to develop holistically, both in physical and non-physical, spiritual and intellectual aspect. On that account, the leader of Bali should rigorously explore and animate the identity of Bali. “If a leader of Bali does not know about them all, it is even feared to drown Bali in the future,” added the Deputy Rector of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, I Ketut Murdana. According to both academicians, the leader of Bali should not ‘sell’ the principles, concepts and indigenous wisdom of Bali for shortterm interests. Besides, it should be required to understand about the concepts of Hindu leadership and implement them into the real action consistently. “If implemented sincerely, the eight major teachings of the Hindu leadership will lead the leader to reach the ideal of prosperous Bali,” said Bakta. Murdana also asked the leader of Bali to keep its promise. The promises and programs proposed during the campaign should be realized as soon as it was entrusted to become the leader. “If the promise is broken, the people of Bali are entitled to impeach it,” affirmed Bakta. An academician from the Undiksha, Dr. Wayan Mudana, said the leader should maintain Balinese culture not through discourses, but through consistent action by getting involved in person in the movement of the culture itself. “A leader must be consistent where it will keep its talk all the times,” said Mudana,
a lecturer at the Faculty of Social Studies in the Undiksha. According to Mudana, at least there were three major forms of Balinese culture. They were the level of supra-ideology containing the norms and values; the social system such as customary village, subak (irrigation cooperative) and other agencies; and material culture consisting of physical relics that should be preserved. “The three elements must be maintained to create a sustainable Bali,” he said. He said in the context of maintaining Balinese culture, people would not like to see a leader talking
nonsense only. Public wanted their leader to move directly with them. For instance, when the community held religious ritual, a leader should make its time get involved in the ritual. Thus, aside from being close to the public, it would also know how the community work together to keep their religion, customs and culture. By engaging in person, a leader would be able to feel what perceived by the public. “If a leader can perceive things in person what people do, then the leader can take the right decision. It will not be a selfish decision, but the decision that advances the community,” he said. (ole)

Besides that they were fined IDR 20,000 each to deduct 3 months jail and have to pay for their acts IDR 2,500. They also have violated section 40 paragraph 2 Law No 5 year 1992 on Conservation and Ecosys-
tem also section 50 Law No 41 year 1999 on Forestry. Some of the accused such as Ketut Wardi, Nyoman Alit, Wayan Wandres, Nyoman Resa, Gede Ringgin and Wayan Seneng admitted to have purposely gone into the forest to hunt protected animals. At first they were looking for monkeys yet their five of their hunt dogs came with 3 kg young deer without its head. It is suspected that the head has been taken off by the dogs. Thinking of having a feast with it, the 15 hunters were then reported by locals and captured by police, besides crescent, five dogs and guns with tens of bullets in it, accused also brought a number of nets to capture the monkeys they were looking for. Clean water services in Badung judged not well managed Mangupura (Bali Post)—
A number of targets of the Millennium Developments Goals (MDGs) in Badung have been achieved well. However, one of the vital components, namely clean water services, has not yet been well organized. The Regent of Badung, AA Gde Agung, in the plenary session of the Badung House held on Tuesday (Apr 2) admitted that water services in Badung still did not comply with the MDGs. “In terms of the MDGs, Badung is excellent, but not in terms of clean water,” said Gde Agung. In order to meet the MDGs components, the endeavors to meet the clean water needs for the community of Badung continued to be performed. At the moment, Gde Agung said the measures taken had already been on the right track. Related to the matter of clean water services, Chairman of Commission B of the Badung House, I Made Sumerta, said on Wednesday (Apr 3) that government in the near future should make a breakthrough that could really be enjoyed by the community. Comprehensive improvement should be done to the utilities. For instance, the South Kuta community needs for clean water was very urgent. All this time, many of them still experienced clean water crisis. As consequence, some of them were forced to
purchase water from tank truck. Those having subscribed to the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) also frequently complained because the water often did not run. “Like right now, the water in Pecatu has not run for about two weeks. If running, it only happens at night,” said the PDI-P politician from Pecatu. In terms of water supply or clean water discharge, the South Kuta area had actually been very adequate. However, in terms of infrastructure or network utilities it was not sufficient so that many people were facing clean water crisis. Sumerta said it might not happen. No matter how much fund required, the government should attempt to meet it. And it should be carried out from right now. “The water discharge is good, but it lacks of utility. It means the anticipation of government is a bit slow. It should have been anticipated since a long time, while it will be different case if the problem lies in the water discharge or water source,” said Sumerta. In building the utility grid later on, the government was required to do it more seriously. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Leno to leave NBC’s ‘Tonight Show’ next year Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — NBC announced a rare but rumored change in the longestrunning U.S. late-night show, replacing Jay Leno at “Tonight” with Jimmy Fallon and moving the iconic franchise back to New York City. Fallon will take over the talk show in about a year, the switch coinciding with NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage. Veteran “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels will take over as executive producer of “Tonight.” NBC made no announcement on who would replace Fallon at the 12:35 a.m. “Late Night” slot, although Seth Meyers of “Saturday Night Live” is considered a strong candidate. The change at “Tonight”
had been widely reported but not confirmed by the network until Wednesday. NBC reportedly just wrapped up negotiations with Fallon on a contract extension. Steve Burke, chief executive officer of NBC Universal, said the network is purposefully making the move when Leno is still at the top of the ratings, just as when Leno replaced Johnny Carson at “Tonight” in 1992. “Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent, and this is his time,” Burke said. Leno, in a statement, offered his congratulations to Fallon. “I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy,” he said. Fallon said: “I’m really excited to host a show that starts today instead of tomorrow.”
LOS ANGELES — Robert Redford does his most compelling work in some time as both actor and director in “The Company You Keep,” a tense yet admirably restrained thriller about a fugitive forced out of hiding after 30 years to prove his innocence. Adapted with clarity and intelligence by Lem Dobbs from Neil Gordon’s novel, and lent distinguishing heft by its roster of screen veterans, this gripping drama provides an absorbing reflection on the courage and cost of dissent. Recalling aspects of Sidney Lumet’s poignant “Running on Empty” from 1988, but with a more subdued emotional palette, the film opens with vintage-style news footage detailing charges against members of radical antiwar group the Weather Underground in the early 1970s for plotting to blow up buildings in multiple U.S. cities. follows, attributing responsibility to the same group for a Michigan bank robbery during which a security guard was killed. While the robbers were identified, only one was ever apprehended. is preparing to turn herself in to the FBI when she is arrested entering New York State. Coverage from aggressive young Albany newspaper reporter Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf) links her to local civil rights lawyer Jim Grant (Redford), who declined to take Solarz’s case. Eager to impress his prickly editor (Stanley Tucci), Ben exploits his access to Diana (Anna Kendrick), a college hookup now working for the bureau. Despite warnings from her boss Cornelius (Terrence Howard) to back off, Ben persists, digging for insights. His legwork reveals that while Jim has long been a respected community member, raising his 11-yearold daughter Isabel (Jacqueline Evancho) alone since the death of his wife in an accident a year earlier, no record of him exists before 1979. Putting two and two together, Ben discovers, just ahead of the Feds, that Jim is Nick Sloan, another of the Michigan robbers. This establishing action is set up with methodical efficiency in Dobbs’ screenplay, gaining momentum when Jim/Nick whisks Isabel out of town and into the care of his brother (Chris Cooper) just as the FBI is closing in. Meanwhile, Ben continues to look for neat answers to messy questions. But a prison interview with Sharon gives him some understanding of the commitment and idealism of the ‘70s radicals. This affecting scene — Sharon shows regret for the mistakes that were made but refuses to repudiate her convictions — is played with perspicacity, toughness and compassion by Sarandon. Propelled by another moody score from Cliff Martinez (“Drive,” ‘’Contagion”) that adds a contemporary edge to Redford’s solidly conventional style, the remainder of the film plays out in pursuit mode.

DENPASAR - Various problems still haunt Bali starting from the increasingly sluggish agriculture and narrowing farmland due to land conversion. Similarly, there are degradation of Balinese culture, inequality of development distribution and many dropout students becoming a heavy burden for Bali. To solve the problems, Bali needs a change and a leader really wishing to serve Bali whole-heartedly. It was revealed in the discussion entitled Drinking Coffee Together at Bali Coffee Warung 63, Jalan Veteran Denpasar, Monday (Apr 1). The figures attending the event consisted of Dr. Nyoman Sukandia, academician from the Faculty of Law, Udayana University; IB Komang Mahardika, a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, Warmadewa University (Unwar); Prof. Dr. I Wayan Windia, a lecturer at Faculty

and Ketut Gede Catur Widiarta. Dr. Nyoman Sukandia said the challenges of Bali ahead were very hard and many problems could not have been resolved by the present leader of Bali. To that end, Bali needed a change. “Bali needs a visionary leader that can manage Bali for the sake of our children and grandchildren in the future, not for the benefits of current leaders,” he said. According to him, Bali needed
a leader that understood about the Balinese customs and culture. Leader of Bali should be born, grew up and lived in Bali, so that it would ontologically knew about the real conditions of Bali. “Bali has been known all over the world because of its village, custom and culture. Their presence must be maintained and even empowered. There must be no discourse from the Bali’s leader regarding the dwarfing of customary village, let alone its dissolution. We thoroughly avoid such things, even though the customary village is in trouble,” he said. He hoped in the future, in accordance with Hindu philosophy, Balinese leader could balance the development of Northern Bali and
Southern Bali. “Future leader of Bali must take bold move to save the interests of Balinese people and Bali. Bali’s leader should be progressive, and proactively absorb the people’s aspirations,” he concluded. Meanwhile, the community leader of Badung Nyoman Sentana said that Bali needed a change. To that end, it was required a change of leadership that would be able to build a better Bali, realize sustainable Bali and balance the development in Bali. “Bali needs a leader that can frequently come down to meet their people. Bali needs a change and the change can be made by Balinese people by electing the appropriate leader for Bali,” he said. Continued on page 6
