And it was the most popular entertainment event on TV since the “Friends” finale that year. The Oscars are generally the most-watched TV event of the year after the Super Bowl. Oscar night was also big for Jimmy Kimmel. The ABC late-night star drew just under 7 million viewers for his postOscars special, the biggest audience he’s ever gotten on ABC, despite starting at 12:42 a.m. on the East Coast. The ratings provide further evidence of how big event programming
is a growth engine for broadcast networks, in large part because of fans watching the event and conversing with friends on tablets and smartphones. Twitter said that some 14.7 million tweets mentioning the Oscars or prominent actors and films were sent out during the Sunday night telecast, and Facebook said there were 25.4 million interactions about the show. Social media was clearly a driving force Sunday and is why live events on networks “have become basically the currency,” co-producer Neil Meron told The Associated Press. “What it’s all about right now is creating a conversation, and social media allows for the conversation as it’s happening,” he said.

Osaka to host all-star concert on Int’l Jazz Day

NEW YORK — Herbie Hancock reckons he’s performed more often in Japan than in his hometown of Chicago during his professional career. The pianist will be back next month for an all-star concert at Osaka Castle Park highlighting the third annual International Jazz Day. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has chosen Osaka as the host city for International Jazz Day 2014, which will be celebrated around the world on April 30. Hancock, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, says it’s an opportunity to show appreciation for Japanese jazz fans who have been among the world’s greatest supporters of the music. He first performed in Japan with Miles Davis’ quintet in 1964, and has toured there with his own electric and acoustic groups for decades. “Japanese audiences are very loyal,” said Hancock, interviewed ahead of Tuesday’s official announcement of the International Jazz Day program. “In Japan, art is really placed on a high level, and jazz is really honored and accepted as being a fine music — much more in comparison to the States.” Osaka was chosen as the host city because its jazz scene dates back to the 1920s and remains lively today, said Tom Carter, president of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, who is partnering with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to present International Jazz Day. “Osaka has played a leading role in the early days of jazz in Japan and in Asia,” Carter said. After American and Filipino bands introduced jazz to Japan, Japanese musicians began playing jazz in Osaka’s dance halls. They included trumpeter Fumio Nanri, who toured the U.S. and was dubbed the “Satchmo of Japan” by Louis Armstrong.
During World War II, the government unsuccessfully tried to ban jazz, but the music flourished during the American occupation. “I was introduced to jazz while playing in a dance hall as a teenager during the American occupation by a Japanese jazz fan and record collector. He played Teddy Wilson’s ‘Sweet Lorraine,’ and I was hooked,” said pianist-composer Toshiko Akiyoshi, who will be performing with her husband, saxophonist-flutist Lew Tabackin, at the Osaka concert.

Corby, 36, whose case has been closely followed in Australia since her 2004 arrest in Bali, was freed on parole last month from a prison on the Indonesian resort island. But a documentary broadcast Sunday by Australia’s Channel Seven, which featured an interview with Corby’s sister Mercedes, brought a threat from Indonesia’s justice minister. “There is a big possibility (that Corby’s parole) will be reconsidered,” Amir Syamsuddin was quoted by Indonesian daily Kompas as saying. Syamsuddin said he was awaiting a report from provincial-level justice officials in Bali, where Corby is living. She must remain in Indonesia until 2017 as a parole condition. Officials in Bali have summoned Corby’s family to demand an explanation over the documentary, and warned Tuesday against further contact with the media. “I suggest Corby keep a lower profile,” Sunar Agus, a top prison official in Bali, told AFP, adding that officials were prepared to “use force” to return her to prison if parole was revoked. The media exposure is being interpreted as an affront in Indonesia, where convicted law-breakers are expected to exhibit remorse. Officials also have raised suggestions that Corby may be profiting from the exposure, amid speculation of a financial deal with Channel Seven, which has denied the rumours. In its midday news report on Tuesday, Indonesia’s widely-watched Metro TV branded the situation a “scandal”. The documentary included video of Corby’s first moments back with her family after her parole. Mercedes Corby also told Channel Seven her sister was “broken” by her time in jail, and described having to bathe and hand-feed her. Syamsuddin said he “deeply regrets” the Channel Seven programme, saying he suspected the family did it for financial gain. “Just to defend this one person, Corby, I experienced a lot of pressure, and there have been all sorts of issues. MANGUPURA - The case of Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura) becomes the evidence of the helter-skelter of the mangrove forest management lasting for a long time. Interestingly, the government even does not manage the mangrove forest properly, but let the quality and quantity of the mangrove forest decline. A former legislator of the Badung House, Ketut Sugiana, said on Monday (Mar 3) the government had gone too far in the management of the mangrove forests. Aside from being assessed to pay less attention to the function of mangrove areas as conservation areas, the government had not been able to anticipate the conversion attempt of the mangrove forest. “I think from the beginning the management of mangrove forests has gone too far so the quality and quantity of mangrove forests decline. Moreover, there is an attempt to make land conversion where part of it is intended for tourist accommodation. Obviously, the acreage of mangrove forest signifi-
cantly reduces,” he said. Sugiana revealed the operating impact of the tourism industry in the mangrove forest area would degrade the quality of mangrove plant. It was caused by the environmental pollution in the neighboring areas. If this condition was not immediately anticipated, the number of damaged and dead mangrove plants would rise. The declining acreage of mangrove forests as not being properly managed was feared to trigger a widespread disruption. Automatically, if the mangrove forest was getting more barren, the potential for tourist accommodation development in the area was getting higher. Is the dam-
aged mangrove forest intentionally ignored to provide the opportunities for tourist accommodation establishment? Sugiana could not answer this. His party only confirmed the mangrove forest should be a pristine conservation area. “Whether there is a deliberate or not, we only see as it is, the mangrove forest should serve as a conservation area. Mangrove forest must be managed properly so the forest can still function as expected. As a conservation area, the government is obliged to secure the area and conserve the forest plants including the replanting, maintenance and control against the pollution,” he affirmed. (kmb25)
TABANAN - Highlight against the inclusion of Jatiluwih into the world cultural heritage (WCH) in Penebel subdistrict, appeared again. Chairman of the Indonesian Farmers Union (HKTI) of Tabanan Chapter, Nyoman Sukania, worried if the world cultural heritage given by the UNESCO did not have much impact on the local farmers. Even, it was suspected as an utopian award. According to Sukania, the inclusion into the WCH had been running for almost two years. However, he did not see any great benefits to local farmers. Even, with the status as the world cultural heritage, the farmers were even more severe because they had a duty to preserve the land forever in accordance with the determination of the UNESCO. “We are concerned that WCH determination is only a heavenly wind or utopian award. Instead, it will even incriminate the farmers due to strict rules of land conservation,” he said, Monday (Mar 3). Moreover, said Sukania, the Tabanan government could not do much with the determination of the world cultural heritage by the UNESCO. “We are also concerned that local government will be burdened with the determination. It’s a pity on the regent,” he said. Actually, the farmers hoped the presence of the world cultural heritage by UNESCO could boost their life because at Jatiluwih farmers posed the spearheaded in the preservation of the perennial rice field. Supposedly, said Sukania, the determination of the world cultural heritage should be poised with the improvement of infrastructure and facilities for local farmers. “Central government should take care of the WCH. It must not only be burdened to local government,” he protested. According to Sukania, central government through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism could create a program with the UNESCO in order that Jatiluwih farmers could farm peacefully. “The commodity sold at Jatiluwih is the activity of farmers. So, farmers should be made comfortable so as not to be burdened with the WCH determination,” he explained. He added, the high tourist visits to Jatiluwih was not necessarily to be enjoyed directly by farmers. Instead, he said, the benefits were reaped by travel agencies. He hoped there would be a clear division of the results generated by the Jatiluwih tourism with local farmers. Just as reminder, in 2012, the rice field area at Subak Jatiluwih was defined as world cultural heritage by the UNESCO. A land area of 300 hectares was crowned as perennial rice field, including the red rice farming system. However, so far, farmers did not perceive maximized impact. Even, a number of water channels had not received any attention. More recently, the Tabanan government established the Jatiluwih Tourist Attraction Management Agency. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Apple dials up effort to meld iPhone with cars Associated Press Writer
SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is accelerating the race to make smartphone applications easier and safer to use in cars. Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are previewing Apple’s iPhone technology for cars this week at an auto show in Geneva. The partnerships give Apple an early lead over Google’s loosely knit family of Android phones in a duel to make mobile applications more accessible while drivers are behind the wheel. Apple’s iOS mobile software and Google’s Android operating system power most of the smartphones in the world. Just two months ago, Google Inc. announced it is working with several major automakers to turn Android phones into an essential part of cars. Google hopes to finish work on its system for tethering Android phones to cars by the end of this year. Apple Inc. announced its automobile ambitions nine months ago when it unveiled its “iOS in the Car” initiative — a reference to the operating system that powers the iPhone and iPad. Now that the idea is moving closer to reality, Apple is renaming the technology “CarPlay.” The system announced Monday enables iPhones to plug into cars so drivers can call up maps, make calls and request music with voice commands or a touch on a vehicle’s dashboard screen.
By making smartphones work more seamlessly with automobiles, both Apple and Google are hoping to immerse their services even deeper into peoples’ lives. In doing so, the companies expect to make money by selling advertising, applications and upgrades on smartphones that will become even more indispensable. “IPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing. Automakers are hoping vehicles that are compatible with the topselling smartphones will be easier to sell to consumers who can’t fathom living without the devices.

WASHINGTON — When Apple, Google, Microsoft and other tech giants united in outrage last summer over the National Security Agency’s unfettered spying, telecommunications giants such as AT&T, Verizon and Sprint —whose customers are also the targets of secret government spying— remained noticeably mum. But now the phone companies are speaking up. In closed-door meetings with policymakers they are taking a less accommodating stance with government and rattling the historically tight bond between telecom and the surveillance community. “It’s been extremely unusual for telecoms to resist any requests from the government,” says software engineer Zaki Manian of Palo Alto, who advocates against mass government surveillance. “The telecom companies have a long history of providing raw data dumps to the government and typically taking some money in return and calling it a day,” Manian says. Technology companies typically comply with requests for information about individual users but resist demands for bulk data. But telecommunications companies share a connection with government unlike that of any other industry. They “have been tied to our national security agencies for all of their history,” says Susan Crawford, a visiting professor
at Harvard Law School who was a special assistant to President Barack Obama for science, technology and innovation policy. During World War II and for decades after, telegraph companies such as Western Union —which was controlled by AT&T— turned over copies of international telegrams originating in the U.S. to the NSA and its predecessor agency. In the 1950s, 60s and 70s, government agents reviewed tens of thousands of telegrams each month under “Project Shamrock,” deemed by lawmakers to be the biggest intelligenceintercept operation in U.S. history. Since the earliest days of wiretapping in the late 19th century, telephone companies have assisted law enforcement and intelligence agencies. For decades, a series of laws cemented the relationship, including a 1994 wiretapping act that requires telecom companies to build networks that allow law enforcement to eavesdrop in real time. But 2014 marks a pivotal moment for the telecom industry. White House policymakers are considering significant changes as public debate about surveillance heightens in the aftermath of NSA spying exposed by former agency contractor Edward Snowden. The central pillar of Obama’s plan to overhaul the surveillance programs calls for shifting storage of Americans’ phone data from the government to telecom companies or an independent third party. But telecoms don’t want that job.

Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali noted that in February 2014, the inflation in Denpasar reached 0.37 percent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 105.94 percent. “The inflation in February is caused by foodstuff, while the increase is caused by the adverse
weather. Chili, for instance, easily perishes in the rainy season so the price is high,” said the Head of Central Statistics Agency of Bali, Panusunan Siregar, in Denpasar. They have struck for four days since Saturday. From 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the truck drivers had been sitting on the podium of Pergung Square, Mendoyo, to hold a meeting with the board. The meeting was related to the restrictions in transporting sand in Karangasem County. They agreed to hold a strike starting from Saturday (Mar 1) through the upcoming Tuesday (Mar 4). Chief of the Pesona for Melaya area, Ketut Sudana alias Pengkah, 45, from Katulampa hamlet, Manistutu, Melaya, said the drivers objected to the policy of the Karangasem government interfering in regulating and restricting the transportation of sand. There was increase in the price from IDR 330,000 per truck plus invoice worth IDR 150,000 or totally reached IDR 480,000 per truck and was then set to IDR 70,000 per cubic meter excluding the invoice so the drivers were confused. “Now, it totally cost IDR 850,000 per truck containing 10 cubic meters. The price hike is large enough so it is difficult for us to sell and it excludes the operating cost. Looking for sand to Tianyar, Dukuh village, Karangasem, is far away,” said the driver who had been transporting sand from Karangasem since 1987. The drivers were also furious with the decision of the Regent of Karangasem. Issuance of the policy was then accompanied with illegal levies, either the contribution to subak organization or others imposed on the drivers. Similar opinion was also revealed by the other drivers. With the price hike and the decision of the Karangasem Regent, they got difficulty. Pengkah said the Pesona members were just waiting for the decision of the drivers in Singaraja. They admitted the strike would last for four days. As the spring thaw begins, automakers will see if the slowdown was due to historic cold temperatures and snowfall — as many believe — or if there are deeper reasons for sagging demand. “March will give us a sense of how real the recovery is going to be this year,” said Alec Gutierrez, a senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book. Automakers entered 2014 expecting to sell more than 16 million cars and trucks for the first time since the recession. But so far, sales are on pace to hit around 15 million, which would be 600,000 less than last year. But Gutierrez believes sales will recover reach 16.3 million for the year. The industry sold 16.1 million vehicles in 2007. “We think there is still plenty of time left this year for sales to rebound and kind of get us back on that pace,” he said. KATMANDU, Nepal — Litterbugs are no longer welcome on the roof of the world. As Nepal welcomes this year’s trekking season on Mount Everest, it is introducing new rules and oversight this week in hopes of taking more control over the world’s tallest mountain. The rules, including a demand that climbers bring down their own trash, are aimed at making the mountain safer — and cleaner, officials said. If the hundreds of Western climbers each year clean up after themselves, “we can be assured that no new garbage will be added,” said Kapindra Rai of the mountain’s pollution control committee. But what of the trash that’s already up there? Tons of crumpled food wrappers, shredded tents, abandoned ropes and spent oxygen cylinders now litter climbing routes, earning Everest the shame of being called “the world’s highest garbage dump.” More than 4,000 climbers have scaled the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit since 1953, when it was first conquered by New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay. Hundreds of others have died in the attempt, while many have succeeded only with help from oxygen tanks, equipment porters and Sherpa guides. Yet, Nepal authorities have never had much control over what happens at the mountain’s extreme altitudes
and remote regions. Instead, private trekking companies are left to organize logistics and report any problems. They are also left to clear the trash, launching yearly springtime expeditions to bring down whatever hasn’t been covered over by ice and snow since the last season’s climbers tossed the refuse the side. “There is no way to say how much garbage is still left on Everest,” said Dawa Steven Sherpa, who has been leading Eco Everest Expeditions since 2008 and plans this year’s effort to include about 30 foreign climbers and 45 Nepalis. “It is impossible to say what is under the ice.” Still, Sherpas and environmentalists applauded the government’s new clean-up rules. “This is a rule that should have been introduced a long time back,” said Ang Tshering, president of Nepal Mountaineering Association. “It is going to make sure that climbers obey the rules.” Nepalese — who consider the
mountain they call Sagarmatha to be sacred — sometimes attribute climbing deaths to bad karma earned through disrespecting the mountain. The Nepali language name Sagarmatha means “forehead of the sky,” while the Tibetan name for Everest is Chomolangma, or “goddess of the snow.” For the government, the mountain is the centerpiece of tourism industry which earns the country $3.3 million each year in climbing fees alone. The industry also supports tens of thousands of Nepalese hotel owners, trekking guides and porters. Some 230,000 people — nearly half of Nepal’s yearly foreign visitors — came last year specifically to trek the Himalayas, with 810 attempting to scale Everest. While the government has long asked climbers to clear their trash, there was little or no enforcement despite threats to withhold climbing deposits for polluting teams.
PRETORIA, South Africa — The second day of Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial was dramatically interrupted Tuesday and the judge ordered an investigation into allegations that a South African television channel was broadcasting a photograph of a witness — against a court order guaranteeing privacy to witnesses who request it. Judge Thokozile Masipa warned the media to respect the ruling that images of witnesses who request privacy should not be shown. Masipa called the revelation “very disturbing.” “An investigation is to follow to find out exactly what is happening. This may just be the tip of the iceberg,” said Masipa. The witness, Michelle Burger, lives close to Pistorius’ house and says she heard a woman screaming on the night Pistorius killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year, leading him to be charged with murder. South African television station eNCA was broadcasting a live audio feed of university lecturer Michelle Burger’s testimony Tuesday with a photograph of her, prosecutor Gerrie Nel said in court. He said the photo was captioned: “On the stand: Michelle Burger, Pistorius neighbor.” Nel said eNCA contacted the court clerk to ask if they could run a photograph of the witness that they had obtained from outside the court. The court said no, Nel said. “They still went ahead and did it,” the prosecutor said. Nel said the outlet found the photo “somewhere else.” The development came less than 30 minutes into the day’s proceedings when Nel interrupted Pistorius lawyer Barry Roux’s cross-examination of Burger, saying he had just been informed that Burger’s image was being shown on television. The judge adjourned proceedings and Burger immediately left the room. When the judge returned after meeting with the two sides in her chambers, she ruled that there would be an investigation and instructed that no photographs may be shown in the media of any witness who requests privacy, regardless of the source.

Tutu said Monday at the Westminster Abbey celebration that the antiapartheid campaign in Britain helped keep the movement going. He said campaigners had helped change the moral climate and prevented Mandela from spending his life in prison and being regarded by many as a terrorist. Tutu thanked Britons who had picketed South African government buildings in London and led boycotts against the apartheid regime. Mandela died in December. He had often cited the British judicial system as a model. The centuries-old Abbey resounded with the sounds of South African singing and drumming during the service.

JAKARTA - Chief of the Indonesian Police General Sutarman appointed Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as his deputy, on Tuesday, to succeed Commissioner General Oegroseno who retired on February 24. The induction ceremony was held at the Police Headquarters and was attended by all provincial police chiefs, representatives of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), the National Police Commission, and other high-ranking officials of the National Police. “Focus on the General Elections 2014 security,” General Sutarman remarked. The special operation for the General Election security will begin on March 26 and will last for 224 days. General Sutarman instructed his new deputy to deal with social conflicts in the society. Among the conflicts that could hamper the social development are street crimes, unlawfully usages of explosives and firearm, terrorism and drug trafficking. He also asked his deputy to make the presence of police officers in the community more meaningful, create transparency and improve accountability. The Police’s Grand Strategy 2005-2025 must also be implemented properly to increase the people’s trust, and to build partnership as well as better organization. “It should not be only on theory and concept, but should be optimally implemented. Comprehensive and in-depth evaluation is also necessary,” he emphasized. Haiti’s appointment is based on the Police Chief’s telegram letter No. ST/478/II/2014 dated February 27, 2014. His post as Deputy Chief of the Indonesian Police has been effective from March 1. Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti is currently the chief of the National Police’s Maintenance and Security. Haiti is also the head of general elections security operation. He pointed out that the appointment of Haiti was based on the best considerations. Other nominees included Commissioner General Budi Gunawan (the head of the Police Educational Institute) and Commissioner General Anton Bachrul Alam (the general supervision inspector). Born in Jember, East Java, on July 24, 1958, Badrodin Haiti graduated from the police academy in 1982. His previous positions included the chief of the Central Sulawesi police (2006-2008), North Sumatra police (2009-2010), and East Java police (2010-2011).

Apart from Sartono, the anti graft commission also questioned Henny Susanti, a staff from the construction division at PT Adhi Karya, the company assigned to build the Hambalang sports center. KPK also called a member of the House of Representatives from Democrat Party Juhaeni Alie and Democrat Party Chief of Supervisory Board Tiopan Bernhard Silalahi.
In 2012, former Chairman of Democrat Party Anas Urbaningrum was named suspect in an alleged corruption on the construction of Hambalang sports center in West Java province. He was said to have received bribe money, which he had used to finance his candidacy as chairman of the party back in 2010. Investigations on this case are still in progress.

course, the plan set all along this season by ownership and general manager Sam Hinkie was to gut the roster until the uncompetitive franchise was pointed straight toward the No. 1 draft pick. The Sixers traded former No. 2 overall pick Evan Turner, forward Lavoy Allen and center Spencer Hawes at the deadline to dump salary, create roster space, and gobble draft picks in hopes of building a championship contender down the road. “We’re trying to acquire things that will help us move forward,” Hinkie said. The next draft pick could be the answer to their prayers, and the Sixers can sign a free agent or two and become Eastern Conference contenders within the next three or four years. But the huge risk to Hinkie’s gamble is this: Instead of drafting championship cornerstones in the lottery, he could instead land the likes of Turner and Kwame Brown, watching the short rebuild twist into a decade of wretched hoops. The Sixers did try and become winners in the summer of 2012 with a nucleus of homegrown talent in Turner, Young, and Jrue Holiday, then they made the blockbuster trade for Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum. The 32 finalists will mark 99 days until the opening match in Brazil by playing friendlies on Wednesday, the last chance for many coaches to test players before naming their World Cup squads. Eighteen of the qualified nations will face-off against each other, with the most eye-catching game seeing world champion Spain taking Italy. Here after five things to know about Wednesday’s matches: DIEGO COSTA’S SPAIN DEBUT
This is more than just a friendly for Diego Costa. It’s a chance for the Brazilian-born striker to make his long-awaited debut for Spain. The naturalized Spanish citizen brings a more physical, tenacious forward to the squad, with coach Vicente del Bosque dropping Fernando Torres and David Villa, key players from successful World Cup and European Championship campaigns. It’s not hard to see why. Diego Costa has 21 goals for Atletico Madrid this season — second only to Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo in Spain. “He’s done enough to merit being here,” Spain defender Sergio Ramos said. “He can bring a lot of positive qualities.” Diego Costa will collect make his first appearance on familiar territory: Atletico’s Vicente Calderon Stadium.

LONDON — Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is facing a long stadium ban after being charged Monday by the English Football Association with improper conduct for head-butting an opposing player during a Premier League match. Pardew has already been sanctioned by Newcastle, accepting a formal warning and a 100,000 pound ($168,000) fine following his confrontation with Hull midfielder David Meyler on Saturday. But any FA punishment could prevent Pardew from attending several matches, rather than just being banned from the touchline. “Due to the serious violent and/ or aggressive nature of the reported behavior this case has been designated as non-standard,” the FA said in a statement. Pardew, who has already apologized, has until Thursday evening to respond to the charge. Earlier this season, then-Blackpool manager Paul Ince received a fivematch stadium ban from the FA for violently shoving a fourth official in an expletive-laden rant. Pardew’s confrontation at the KC Stadium happened in the 72nd minute. Meyler initially barged into Pardew as he looked to retrieve the ball for a throw-in. After squaring up to Meyler before moving his head in the direction of the player’s face, Pardew was sent to the stands. Newcastle beat Hull 4-1.

LONDON — World Cup contenders will hope to find out this week if they are better prepared for the tournament than some of the Brazilian stadiums they will be playing in. The 32 finalists will mark 99 days until the opening match in Brazil by playing friendlies on Wednesday, the last chance for many coaches to test players before naming their World Cup squads. Eighteen of the qualified nations will face-off against each other, with the most eye-catching game seeing world champion Spain taking Italy. Here after five things to know about Wednesday’s matches: DIEGO COSTA’S SPAIN DEBUT
This is more than just a friendly for Diego Costa. It’s a chance for the Brazilian-born striker to make his long-awaited debut for Spain. The naturalized Spanish citizen brings a more physical, tenacious forward to the squad, with coach Vicente del Bosque dropping Fernando Torres and David Villa, key players from successful World Cup and European Championship campaigns. It’s not hard to see why. Diego Costa has 21 goals for Atletico Madrid this season — second only to Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo in Spain. “He’s done enough to merit being here,” Spain defender Sergio Ramos said. “He can bring a lot of positive qualities.” Diego Costa will collect make his first appearance on familiar territory: Atletico’s Vicente Calderon Stadium.
IMMOBILE GETS THE CALL
The focus is on the strike force for Italy, too. Mario Balotelli is out injured and Daniele De Rossi was dropped for breaking Cesare Prandelli’s code of ethics while playing for Roma. So Torino forward Ciro Immobile has been called for up the first time after scoring 13 goals this season.
FRENCH REDEMPTION
Behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Costa, third place in the Spanish league scoring chart is held by Antoine Griezmann with 15 goals. And the Real Sociedad forward could now make his France debut against the Netherlands. Griezmann was previously banned from representing France until the end of 2013 for going to a nightclub in 2012 during the playoffs for the 2013 Under-21 European Championship.

With several long-term injured players, including Sami Khedira and Ilkay Gundogan, Germany coach Joachim Loew must test other options before the World Cup. It was still a surprise move putting four newcomers in the squad to face Chile — especially Sampdoria defender Shkodran Mustafi. Although Mustafi has played for all German junior teams, his club football has been mainly abroad and he is hardly known in Germany. Apart from the injured Thomas Mueller and Sven Bender, Loew also left out Mario Gomez, Mats Hummels, Marco Reus, Julian Draxler and Benedikt Hoewedes, who all only recently returned to action. Forward Max Kruse and goalkeeper Rene Adler have been in poor form and were also dropped.

Four World Cup stadiums are still under construction, and work outside many of the venues is far from over in Brazil. There were concerns about South Africa’s readiness four years ago as well, and Brazil’s players will be going to the scene of the 2010 final at Soccer City in Johannesburg to play the previous hosts. It seems that the Brazil squad is in better shape than the country’s World Cup infrastructure. “We have everything that allows us to be the best team,” Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said.

LONDON — Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is facing a long stadium ban after being charged Monday by the English Football Association with improper conduct for head-butting an opposing player during a Premier League match. Pardew has already been sanctioned by Newcastle, accepting a formal warning and a 100,000 pound ($168,000) fine following his confrontation with Hull midfielder David Meyler on Saturday. But any FA punishment could prevent Pardew from attending several matches, rather than just being banned from the touchline. “Due to the serious violent and/ or aggressive nature of the reported behavior this case has been designated as non-standard,” the FA said in a statement. Pardew, who has already apologized, has until Thursday evening to respond to the charge. Earlier this season, then-Blackpool manager Paul Ince received a fivematch stadium ban from the FA for violently shoving a fourth official in an expletive-laden rant. Pardew’s confrontation at the KC Stadium happened in the 72nd minute. Meyler initially barged into Pardew as he looked to retrieve the ball for a throw-in. After squaring up to Meyler before moving his head in the direction of the player’s face, Pardew was sent to the stands. Newcastle beat Hull 4-1.

course, the plan set all along this season by ownership and general manager Sam Hinkie was to gut the roster until the uncompetitive franchise was pointed straight toward the No. 1 draft pick. The Sixers traded former No. 2 overall pick Evan Turner, forward Lavoy Allen and center Spencer Hawes at the deadline to dump salary, create roster space, and gobble draft picks in hopes of building a championship contender down the road. “We’re trying to acquire things that will help us move forward,” Hinkie said. The next draft pick could be the answer to their prayers, and the Sixers can sign a free agent or two and become Eastern Conference contenders within the next three or four years. But the huge risk to Hinkie’s gamble is this: Instead of drafting championship cornerstones in the lottery, he could instead land the likes of Turner and Kwame Brown, watching the short rebuild twist into a decade of wretched hoops. The Sixers did try and become winners in the summer of 2012 with a nucleus of homegrown talent in Turner, Young, and Jrue Holiday, then they made the blockbuster trade for Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum. Bynum was a bust and never played a game last season because of bad knees, the first string pulled in the unraveling of a franchise that reached Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2012.

KATMANDU, Nepal — Litterbugs are no longer welcome on the roof of the world. As Nepal welcomes this year’s trekking season on Mount Everest, it is introducing new rules and oversight this week in hopes of taking more control over the world’s tallest mountain. The rules, including a demand that climbers bring down their own trash, are aimed at making the mountain safer — and cleaner, officials said. If the hundreds of Western climbers each year clean up after themselves, “we can be assured that no new garbage will be added,” said Kapindra Rai of the mountain’s pollution control committee. But what of the trash that’s already up there? Tons of crumpled food wrappers, shredded tents, abandoned ropes and spent oxygen cylinders now litter climbing routes, earning Everest the shame of being called “the world’s highest garbage dump.” More than 4,000 climbers have scaled the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit since 1953, when it was first conquered by New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay. Hundreds of others have died in the attempt, while many have succeeded only with help from oxygen tanks, equipment porters and Sherpa guides. Yet, Nepal authorities have never had much control over what happens at the mountain’s extreme altitudes
and remote regions. Instead, private trekking companies are left to organize logistics and report any problems. They are also left to clear the trash, launching yearly springtime expeditions to bring down whatever hasn’t been covered over by ice and snow since the last season’s climbers tossed the refuse the side. “There is no way to say how much garbage is still left on Everest,” said Dawa Steven Sherpa, who has been leading Eco Everest Expeditions since 2008 and plans this year’s effort to include about 30 foreign climbers and 45 Nepalis. “It is impossible to say what is under the ice.” Still, Sherpas and environmentalists applauded the government’s new clean-up rules. “This is a rule that should have been introduced a long time back,” said Ang Tshering, president of Nepal Mountaineering Association. “It is going to make sure that climbers obey the rules.” Nepalese — who consider the
mountain they call Sagarmatha to be sacred — sometimes attribute climbing deaths to bad karma earned through disrespecting the mountain. The Nepali language name Sagarmatha means “forehead of the sky,” while the Tibetan name for Everest is Chomolangma, or “goddess of the snow.” For the government, the mountain is the centerpiece of tourism industry which earns the country $3.3 million each year in climbing fees alone. The industry also supports tens of thousands of Nepalese hotel owners, trekking guides and porters. Some 230,000 people — nearly half of Nepal’s yearly foreign visitors — came last year specifically to trek the Himalayas, with 810 attempting to scale Everest. While the government has long asked climbers to clear their trash, there was little or no enforcement despite threats to withhold climbing deposits for polluting teams.
PRETORIA, South Africa — The second day of Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial was dramatically interrupted Tuesday and the judge ordered an investigation into allegations that a South African television channel was broadcasting a photograph of a witness — against a court order guaranteeing privacy to witnesses who request it. Judge Thokozile Masipa warned the media to respect the ruling that images of witnesses who request privacy should not be shown. Masipa called the revelation “very disturbing.” “An investigation is to follow to find out exactly what is happening. This may just be the tip of the iceberg,” said Masipa. The witness, Michelle Burger, lives close to Pistorius’ house and says she heard a woman screaming on the night Pistorius killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year, leading him to be charged with murder. South African television station eNCA was broadcasting a live audio feed of university lecturer Michelle Burger’s testimony Tuesday with a photograph of her, prosecutor Gerrie Nel said in court. He said the photo was captioned: “On the stand: Michelle Burger, Pistorius neighbor.” Nel said eNCA contacted the court clerk to ask if they could run a photograph of the witness that they had obtained from outside the court. The court said no, Nel said. “They still went ahead and did it,” the prosecutor said. Nel said the outlet found the photo “somewhere else.” The development came less than 30 minutes into the day’s proceedings when Nel interrupted Pistorius lawyer Barry Roux’s cross-examination of Burger, saying he had just been informed that Burger’s image was being shown on television. The judge adjourned proceedings and Burger immediately left the room. When the judge returned after meeting with the two sides in her chambers, she ruled that there would be an investigation and instructed that no photographs may be shown in the media of any witness who requests privacy, regardless of the source.

The induction ceremony was held at the Police Headquarters and was attended by all provincial police chiefs, representatives of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), the National Police Commission, and other high-ranking officials of the National Police. “Focus on the General Elections 2014 security,” General Sutarman remarked. The special operation for the General Election security will begin on March 26 and will last for 224 days. General Sutarman instructed his new deputy to deal with social conflicts in the society. Among the conflicts that could hamper the social development are street crimes, unlawfully usages of explosives and firearm, terrorism and drug trafficking. He also asked his deputy to make the presence of police officers in the community more meaningful, create transparency and improve accountability. The Police’s Grand Strategy 2005-2025 must also be implemented properly to increase the people’s trust, and to build partnership as well as better organization. “It should not be only on theory and concept, but should be optimally implemented. Comprehensive and in-depth evaluation is also necessary,” he emphasized. Haiti’s appointment is based on the Police Chief’s telegram letter No. ST/478/II/2014 dated February 27, 2014. In 2012, former Chairman of Democrat Party Anas Urbaningrum was named suspect in an alleged corruption on the construction of Hambalang sports center in West Java province. He was said to have received bribe money, which he had used to finance his candidacy as chairman of the party back in 2010. Investigations on this case are still in progress.

As the spring thaw begins, automakers will see if the slowdown was due to historic cold temperatures and snowfall — as many believe — or if there are deeper reasons for sagging demand. “March will give us a sense of how real the recovery is going to be this year,” said Alec Gutierrez, a senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book. Automakers entered 2014 expecting to sell more than 16 million cars and trucks for the first time since the recession. But so far, sales are on pace to hit around 15 million, which would be 600,000 less than last year. But Gutierrez believes sales will recover reach 16.3 million for the year. The industry sold 16.1 million vehicles in 2007. “We think there is still plenty of time left this year for sales to rebound and kind of get us back on that pace,” he said. On Monday, General Motors, Ford and Toyota all reported U.S.
sales declines for February. The country’s top three automakers by sales said the month started slowly but sales began to recover in the second half. If that momentum continues into March, fears of a broader sales slowdown may prove to be unfounded. Industry analysts expect overall sales to rise about 1 percent for the month, a slow pace compared with the 8 percent increase for all of last year. U.S. consumers bought just under 1.2 million new cars and trucks in February, unchanged from a year ago. That follows a 3 percent drop in January — the first year-over-year decline since August 2010. NEGARA - The drivers incorporated into the Jembrana Drivers Union (Pesona) held a peaceful action in the Widya Mandala Square at Pergung, Mendoyo, Sunday (Feb 2). They have struck for four days since Saturday. From 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the truck drivers had been sitting on the podium of Pergung Square, Mendoyo, to hold a meeting with the board. The meeting was related to the restrictions in transporting sand in Karangasem County. They agreed to hold a strike starting from Saturday (Mar 1) through the upcoming Tuesday (Mar 4). Chief of the Pesona for Melaya area, Ketut Sudana alias Pengkah, 45, from Katulampa hamlet, Manistutu, Melaya, said the drivers objected to the policy of the Karangasem government interfering in regulating and restricting the transportation of sand. There was increase in the price from IDR 330,000 per truck plus invoice worth IDR 150,000 or totally reached IDR 480,000 per truck and was then set to IDR 70,000 per cubic meter excluding the invoice so the drivers were confused. “Now, it totally cost IDR 850,000 per truck containing 10 cubic meters. The price hike is large enough so it is difficult for us to sell and it excludes the operating cost. Looking for sand to Tianyar, Dukuh village, Karangasem, is far away,” said the driver who had been transporting sand from Karangasem since 1987. The drivers were also furious with the decision of the Regent of Karangasem. Issuance of the policy was then accompanied with illegal levies, either the contribution to subak organization or others imposed on the drivers. Similar opinion was also revealed by the other drivers. With the price hike and the decision of the Karangasem Regent, they got difficulty. Pengkah said the Pesona members were just waiting for the decision of the drivers in Singaraja. They admitted the strike would last for four days. SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is accelerating the race to make smartphone applications easier and safer to use in cars. Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are previewing Apple’s iPhone technology for cars this week at an auto show in Geneva. The partnerships give Apple an early lead over Google’s loosely knit family of Android phones in a duel to make mobile applications more accessible while drivers are behind the wheel. Apple’s iOS mobile software and Google’s Android operating system power most of the smartphones in the world. Just two months ago, Google Inc. announced it is working with several major automakers to turn Android phones into an essential part of cars. Google hopes to finish work on its system for tethering Android phones to cars by the end of this year. Apple Inc. announced its automobile ambitions nine months ago when it unveiled its “iOS in the Car” initiative — a reference to the operating system that powers the iPhone and iPad. Now that the idea is moving closer to reality, Apple is renaming the technology “CarPlay.” The system announced Monday enables iPhones to plug into cars so drivers can call up maps, make calls and request music with voice commands or a touch on a vehicle’s dashboard screen.
By making smartphones work more seamlessly with automobiles, both Apple and Google are hoping to immerse their services even deeper into peoples’ lives. In doing so, the companies expect to make money by selling advertising, applications and upgrades on smartphones that will become even more indispensable. “IPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing. WASHINGTON — When Apple, Google, Microsoft and other tech giants united in outrage last summer over the National Security Agency’s unfettered spying, telecommunications giants such as AT&T, Verizon and Sprint —whose customers are also the targets of secret government spying— remained noticeably mum. But now the phone companies are speaking up. In closed-door meetings with policymakers they are taking a less accommodating stance with government and rattling the historically tight bond between telecom and the surveillance community. “It’s been extremely unusual for telecoms to resist any requests from the government,” says software engineer Zaki Manian of Palo Alto, who advocates against mass government surveillance. “The telecom companies have a long history of providing raw data dumps to the government and typically taking some money in return and calling it a day,” Manian says. Technology companies typically comply with requests for information about individual users but resist demands for bulk data. But telecommunications companies share a connection with government unlike that of any other industry. They “have been tied to our national security agencies for all of their history,” says Susan Crawford, a visiting professor
at Harvard Law School who was a special assistant to President Barack Obama for science, technology and innovation policy. During World War II and for decades after, telegraph companies such as Western Union —which was controlled by AT&T— turned over copies of international telegrams originating in the U.S. to the NSA and its predecessor agency. In the 1950s, 60s and 70s, government agents reviewed tens of thousands of telegrams each month under “Project Shamrock,” deemed by lawmakers to be the biggest intelligenceintercept operation in U.S. history. Since the earliest days of wiretapping in the late 19th century, telephone companies have assisted law enforcement and intelligence agencies. For decades, a series of laws cemented the relationship, including a 1994 wiretapping act that requires telecom companies to build networks that allow law enforcement to eavesdrop in real time. But 2014 marks a pivotal moment for the telecom industry. White House policymakers are considering significant changes as public debate about surveillance heightens in the aftermath of NSA spying exposed by former agency contractor Edward Snowden. The central pillar of Obama’s plan to overhaul the surveillance programs calls for shifting storage of Americans’ phone data from the government to telecom companies or an independent third party. But telecoms don’t want that job.

If the breathing roots are covered by oil, and if it is really oil, it will die because it cannot breathe. According to him, there was small possibility if the mangrove trees that died were the result of on fire due to natural factors. Actually, every mangrove could adapt to the length and frequency of inundation. If it could not be adaptive, the mangroves would grow away to a landline or avoid watering place. “Usually, our beach is flooded twice and down twice in a day. If it is adaptive to the twice puddles and downs in one day, the natural factor is not too much because it has been familiar with such condition,” he explained. However, Arthana also revealed that he once made a research in the 1990s where he examined the mangroves near the junction to Benoa and toll bridge (JDP). At that time, some of the trees were deciduous or like plants in the pot when lacking of water.

If it was kindled by climate change, the damaged mangroves should also occur in other areas, such as on Serangan Island. “There is a suspicion, we do not dare to accuse if there is a deliberate. But, why can the mangrove straightly look like that? Allegedly, it is caused by the influence
of oil, but it must not be so serious like that. This needs a more profound investigation whether there is an element of intent, or other elements,” he said. Both Arthana and Wana were equally concerned if the condition was left as it was. The mangrove vegetation had a vital function to hold the waves and to suppress the occurrence of abrasion. DENPASAR - The surge in prices of basic necessities as a result of weather triggered the inflation in Denpasar. Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali noted that in February 2014, the inflation in Denpasar reached 0.37 percent with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 105.94 percent. “The inflation in February is caused by foodstuff, while the increase is caused by the adverse
weather. Chili, for instance, easily perishes in the rainy season so the price is high,” said the Head of Central Statistics Agency of Bali, Panusunan Siregar, in Denpasar. He said the components undergoing the price increase during February were rice, cayenne pepper, chicken, fried chicken, clove cigarette filter, mild cigarettes and drinking glasses, where the group of processed foods, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco got inflation by 1.46 percent. MANGUPURA - The case of Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura) becomes the evidence of the helter-skelter of the mangrove forest management lasting for a long time. The declining acreage of mangrove forests as not being properly managed was feared to trigger a widespread disruption. His party only confirmed the mangrove forest should be a pristine conservation area. “Whether there is a deliberate or not, we only see as it is, the mangrove forest should serve as a conservation area. Mangrove forest must be managed properly so the forest can still function as expected. TABANAN - Highlight against the inclusion of Jatiluwih into the world cultural heritage (WCH) in Penebel subdistrict, appeared again. Chairman of the Indonesian Farmers Union (HKTI) of Tabanan Chapter, Nyoman Sukania, worried if the world cultural heritage given by the UNESCO did not have much impact on the local farmers. Even, it was suspected as an utopian award. According to Sukania, the inclusion into the WCH had been running for almost two years. However, he did not see any great benefits to local farmers. Even, with the status as the world cultural heritage, the farmers were even more severe because they had a duty to preserve the land forever in accordance with the determination of the UNESCO. “We are concerned that WCH determination is only a heavenly wind or utopian award. Instead, it will even incriminate the farmers due to strict rules of land conservation,” he said, Monday (Mar 3). Moreover, said Sukania, the Tabanan government could not do much with the determination of the world cultural heritage by the UNESCO. “We are also concerned that local government will be burdened with the determination. It’s a pity on the regent,” he said. Actually, the farmers hoped the presence of the world cultural heritage by UNESCO could boost their life because at Jatiluwih farmers posed the spearheaded in the preservation of the perennial rice field. Supposedly, said Sukania, the determination of the world cultural heritage should be poised with the improvement of infrastructure and facilities for local farmers. “Central government should take care of the WCH. It must not only be burdened to local government,” he protested. According to Sukania, central government through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism could create a program with the UNESCO in order that Jatiluwih farmers could farm peacefully. “The commodity sold at Jatiluwih is the activity of farmers. So, farmers should be made comfortable so as not to be burdened with the WCH determination,” he explained. He added, the high tourist visits to Jatiluwih was not necessarily to be enjoyed directly by farmers. Instead, he said, the benefits were reaped by travel agencies. He hoped there would be a clear division of the results generated by the Jatiluwih tourism with local farmers. Just as reminder, in 2012, the rice field area at Subak Jatiluwih was defined as world cultural heritage by the UNESCO. A land area of 300 hectares was crowned as perennial rice field, including the red rice farming system. However, so far, farmers did not perceive maximized impact. Even, a number of water channels had not received any attention. More recently, the Tabanan government established the Jatiluwih Tourist Attraction Management Agency. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — Herbie Hancock reckons he’s performed more often in Japan than in his hometown of Chicago during his professional career. The pianist will be back next month for an all-star concert at Osaka Castle Park highlighting the third annual International Jazz Day. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has chosen Osaka as the host city for International Jazz Day 2014, which will be celebrated around the world on April 30. Hancock, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, says it’s an opportunity to show appreciation for Japanese jazz fans who have been among the world’s greatest supporters of the music. He first performed in Japan with Miles Davis’ quintet in 1964, and has toured there with his own electric and acoustic groups for decades. “Japanese audiences are very loyal,” said Hancock, interviewed ahead of Tuesday’s official announcement of the International Jazz Day program. “In Japan, art is really placed on a high level, and jazz is really honored and accepted as being a fine music — much more in comparison to the States.” Osaka was chosen as the host city because its jazz scene dates back to the 1920s and remains lively today, said Tom Carter, president of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, who is partnering with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to present International Jazz Day. “Osaka has played a leading role in the early days of jazz in Japan and in Asia,” Carter said. After American and Filipino bands introduced jazz to Japan, Japanese musicians began playing jazz in Osaka’s dance halls. They included trumpeter Fumio Nanri, who toured the U.S. and was dubbed the “Satchmo of Japan” by Louis Armstrong.
During World War II, the government unsuccessfully tried to ban jazz, but the music flourished during the American occupation. “I was introduced to jazz while playing in a dance hall as a teenager during the American occupation by a Japanese jazz fan and record collector. Corby, 36, whose case has been closely followed in Australia since her 2004 arrest in Bali, was freed on parole last month from a prison on the Indonesian resort island. But a documentary broadcast Sunday by Australia’s Channel Seven, which featured an interview with Corby’s sister Mercedes, brought a threat from Indonesia’s justice minister. “There is a big possibility (that Corby’s parole) will be reconsidered,” Amir Syamsuddin was quoted by Indonesian daily Kompas as saying. Syamsuddin said he was awaiting a report from provincial-level justice officials in Bali, where Corby is living. She must remain in Indonesia until 2017 as a parole condition. Officials in Bali have summoned Corby’s family to demand an explanation over the documentary, and warned Tuesday against further contact with the media. “I suggest Corby keep a lower profile,” Sunar Agus, a top prison official in Bali, told AFP, adding that officials were prepared to “use force” to return her to prison if parole was revoked. The media exposure is being interpreted as an affront in Indonesia, where convicted law-breakers are expected to exhibit remorse. Officials also have raised suggestions that Corby may be profiting from the exposure, amid speculation of a financial deal with Channel Seven, which has denied the rumours.
