NEW YORK - Pop star Janet Jackson has given birth to her first child, a boy, at the age of 50, her publicist has said. “Janet Jackson and husband Wissam Al Mana are thrilled to welcome their new son Eissa Al Mana into the world,” the singer’s representative said in a statement to People magazine. “Janet had a stress-free, healthy delivery and is resting comfortably.” Jackson and Qatari businessman
Mr Al Mana married in 2012, and the singer in April postponed her Unbreakable world tour so they could focus on starting a family. In October, she showed off her baby bump in an exclusive photo for People magazine. Jackson, the fiercely private youngest child of the famed Jackson singing family, has not given any details of the pregnancy or where the baby was born. She and her husband have stayed out of the limelight since their nuptials, which didn’t stop tabloids
from reporting the singer had converted to Islam. In October, photos emerged of Jackson in a full-length head covering which fuelled the rumours of conversion. The singer has not commented on her religion and as several social media users pointed out, the covering was in fact an item from a menswear line released that year. She had two previous marriages: a year-long union with soul singer James DeBarge in the mid-1980s, and with dancer Rene Elizondo Jr from 1991 to 2000. (rtr)

MANAUS, Brazil - Brazil’s justice minister on Tuesday proposed an overhaul of the penal system to tackle chronic prison overcrowding a day after 56 inmates were massacred in the deadliest riot in two decades. The minister, Alexandre de Moraes, said Brazil needed to improve conditions in jails, which are home to an estimated 600,000 inmates, after visiting the prison in the jungle city of Manaus where violence erupted between rival drug gangs. In an incident that shocked even Brazilians inured to regular outbreaks of prison violence, machete-wielding gangs decapitated inmates on Monday and threw their bodies over a wall of the penitentiary, which houses more than three times its capacity. Hundreds of anguished relatives,
hugging each other and sobbing uncontrollably, gathered outside the morgue in Manaus, waiting to discover if their loved ones were alive. A morgue employee emerged from time to time to read from a list of those confirmed dead. “I never imagined something like this could happen,” cried Diana after learning that her son Ronei Pinheiro had been killed. “Please help me bury my son.” Officials were forced to rent a refrigerated truck to store bodies, while medical examiners tried to identify the remains.
A war for control of the lucrative drug trade fueled the latest gang violence in Brazil’s understaffed prisons, raising concerns that Monday’s massacre could unleash a wave of reprisals. “We used to speak it and all the parties claimed to have been ready including the government. Now, the impact has been visible like the onslaught of investors as well as foreign workers. Everyone hits the roof when all goods and services have come in,” said Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Nengah Tamba, in Denpasar on Tuesday (Jan. 3). Tamba added that foreign workers cannot be stopped. Moreover, there has been a visa-free policy. They are able to fly very easily from their home country to Indonesia, especially Bali. On that account, human resources of Bali should enrich themselves with knowledge, technology and capital. “That’s not enough and we must also work together with the government. Local government should also help local entrepreneurs. If they are not given the ease of capital or licensing, we are troublesome. The government should not remain silent as it could be a source of problem later on,” he explained. Tamba asserted that the last filter indeed lies in the government. Entrepreneurs from outside should be given advice by the government to partner with local entrepreneurs. On the other hand, local entrepreneurs and all other components of Balinese community are
reminded not to only complain and become spectators. “If it happens, we will just sit, complain, look and watch it. We’ll get marginalized. Do not blame as the AEC has been opened and globalization has been in motion,” he said. Correspondingly, Tamba worried about the incoming illegal foreign workers. Their presence would be difficult to be dammed. Currently, there has emerged illegal Chinese tour guides along with a driver who are also of foreign national. “Indeed it is difficult to arrest the illegal workers as it must be proved by their salary slip. For instance, if they have a promenade, they can claim to be a traveler. They can check-in in Bali but work in Sumatra or check-in in Jakarta but work in Bali. It is also difficult to track as they do not always check-in in Bali and work in Bali. They are very smart. Otherwise, they are arrested when getting involved in crime,” he said. Earlier, Head of the Bali Manpower Agency, I Ketut Wija, claimed to have not found any illegal foreign labor. Actually, there have been plenty of complaints, mainly from the tourism sector concerning with illegal tourist guides. However, the surveillance is still being undertaken by a joint team of the manpower agency, police, prosecutor and immigration. “We at manpower agency have 24 labor inspectors to supervise local labor and foreign labor. As the name implies, the illegal foreign workers are indeed very difficult to arrest. If people indeed find indications regarding the illegal foreign labor, please report to immigration office or manpower agency. BANGLI - The budget managed by the Bangli Tourism and Culture Agency in 2017 to promote tourism has decreased from the previous year. This year the agency will only obtain the promotion budget of IDR 300 million. Head of the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, said that in 2016 his agency only got the budget for tourism promotion as much as IDR 384 million. However, this year the amount is reduced to IDR 300 million. He claimed not to know exactly why the budget of tourism promotion is reduced. Though reduced, Adnyana admitted to continuously do promotion maximally with the budget available. As planned, of the IDR 300 million of promotion budget allocated, approximately IDR 200 million will be used for promotion in the activity held in Nusa Dua. In these activities, there will be a meeting with buyers in order to bring in travelers, especially foreign travelers to Bangli.

Omega-3 fatty acids linked to lower risk of heart disease
WASHINGTON - Omega-3 fatty acids in fish and dietary supplements are associated with lower odds of heart disease even in people already at elevated risk because of excessive levels of fats or bad cholesterol in their blood, a research review suggests.
The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish a week and considering supplements of omega-3 fatty acids when that’s not possible. Previous research has linked omega-3s to a lower risk of abnormal heartbeats, less fats in the blood, reduced risk of artery-clogging deposits known as plaque, and slightly lower blood pressure. For the current study, researchers examined previously published research on two omega-3s: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). They found that consumption of omega-3s in food or supplements was associated with a 16 percent lower risk of heart disease in people with high triglycerides, or fats, in the blood, and a 14 percent lower risk for patients with elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the bad kind. “The collective evidence from all studies supports a beneficial role of EPA and DHA on coronary heart disease, and stronger associations were observed among those who may benefit acutely from EPA and DHA, such as those with elevated triglyceride levels and those with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,” said lead study author Dominik Alexander of EpidStat Institute, with offices in Seattle, Washington, and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
To examine the connection between omega-3s and heart disease, researchers analyzed data from 18 trials that randomly assigned about 93,000 people to get a certain amount of these nutrients. Across these randomized trials, they found omega3s associated with a 6 percent lower risk of heart disease, but this was too small to rule out the possibility it was due to chance. The study also reviewed results from another 17 previously published trials that observed about 732,000 people over long periods of time while they followed their usual diets. Over all of these studies, omega-3s were tied to a statistically meaningful 18 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease. The study was funded by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED), an advocacy group with manufacturers and sellers of omega-3 dietary supplements among its members. Several study authors have also served as consultants to manufacturers of omega-3 supplements. Limitations of the study include the wide variation in study designs for the randomized trials, which included patients with a range of eating habits and heart disease risk factors and tested omega-3s over different time periods, the authors note in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Some studies in the current analysis also didn’t track heart health or the amount of omega-3s in people’s diets at the start, making it harder to determine how much these nutrients might directly influence heart disease risk over time, the authors also point out. SEATTLE - It may be tempting to clean your ears with Q-tips or try ear candling to clear away any clogs, but it’s best to check with a professional before taking matters into your own hands, doctors advise. “Patients may try to blindly instrument their ears with cotton ear buds, bobby pins, or other tools,” said Dr. Seth Schwartz, chair of a committee that drafted new guidelines for diagnosing and treating earwax for the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. “These are generally ineffective and potentially dangerous,” Schwartz, director of the Listen For Life Center at Virginia Mason in Seattle, said by email. “Scratching of the ear canal skin can lead to pain and infection,” Schwartz added. “Sometimes they just push the wax in further, and there also is the potential for damage to the ear drum.” The body makes earwax, or cerumen, to keep ears clean and trap substances like dust and dirt, preventing debris from getting further into the ear where it can cause damage. As new skin grows in the ear canal, it pushes old earwax from the inside of the ears closer to the opening where it naturally flakes off or washes away during bathing. Often, there’s nothing wrong with having a little earwax near the
opening, doctors stress in guidelines published in Otolaryngology– Head and Neck Surgery. But when the ear’s self-cleaning process doesn’t work well, too much earwax may accumulate and partially or fully block the ear canal. This can cause problems including pain, itching, discharge from the ear, ringing in the ear or hearing loss. Roughly one in 10 children and one in 20 adults suffer from excessive earwax buildup, as do more than one third of elderly people, according to the guidelines. Excessive cleaning can irritate the ear canal, cause infection, and even increase the chances of excessive buildup, or what’s known as cerumen impaction, the guidelines note. There’s no evidence that using ear candles, a process that relies on heat to remove buildup, actually works at clearing impaction, and this can cause serious damage to the ear canal and eardrum, the guidelines also emphasize. Patients should see a doctor if they experience hearing loss, pain or feel fullness in their ears or aren’t certain whether the amount of wax is normal. People should also get a checkup if they have ear drainage or bleeding because these symptoms aren’t tied to impaction and may be an indication of other problems. (rtr)

On arriving at the market, the entourage went immediately to one of the Klungkung’s typical endek fabric shops, Toko Winata. The atmosphere previously sterile and getting security from presidential secret service was suddenly crowded. Mufidah Yusuf Kalla and the entourage chose endek and songket fabric at some shops for approximately an hour. Without hesitation, the wife of vice president directly chose fabrics becoming her target, starting from endek to songket fabric denoting the
typical product of Klungkung. After buying some fabrics, the entourage then left Semarapura art market around 11:00 heading for the Tampaksiring Presidential Palace. One of the fabric merchants, A.A Ratnawati, admitted not to guess the arrival of the special shopper. Moreover, the vice president’s wife purchased a piece of songket fabric worth IDR 1 million at her shop. “I really did not guess if the shopper purchasing a piece of songket fabric at my shop is vice president’s wife,” she said happily. In the meantime, related to the visit of the vice president’s wife, Regent Nyoman Suwirta said that readiness and sanitation of market has been well maintained. According to him, her arrival at the Semarapura market is expected to have an impact on the condition of the market, including the visit of shoppers. “Through this visit, the Semarapura market can be increasingly promoted,” said Suwirta. As happened in 2016, the number of tourist visit has exceeded the target by 30 percent in November. “The length of stay is three days, so that by November it already exceeded the target of 4.4 million. We’re just waiting for the data of December. Up to November, there has been an increase of 30 percent. So, in my prediction there will be about 4.8 million until December,” said the Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, in Denpasar on Monday (Jan. 2). Yuniartha admitted that the length of stay of foreign travelers in Bali is unlike before reaching five and even seven days. Bali itself is unable to close itself from not spreading travelers to other provinces. In other words, the travelers coming to Bali to-
day also visit the destinations outside Bali, so that it reduces the length of stay on the Island of the Gods. “Where they travel next is departing from Bali. Now, we are trying to improve the existing destinations in Bali. So, opening new tourist destination, repairing infrastructure and enhancing the existing ones are the measures we will try to extend the length of stay,” he explained. These measures, added Yuniartha, require collaboration with the district and municipality because the destinations are located in the district and municipality. Through coordination meeting, his agency has emphasized on the district and municipality to increase destinations and renew the existing destinations. “The promotion will be made with the assistance of the ministry of tourism as well through cooperation with travel agencies. BEIJING - The Chinese capital issued its highest red fog alert for a second day on Wednesday, keeping highways closed in and around the city which is already under a smog alert after weeks of choking winter pollution. China’s weather bureau warned of visibility of less than 50 metres in some areas, leading many airports to cancel flights. More than 2,000 tourists were stranded on a cruise ship for two extra days near the port of Tianjin, as smog prevented the ship from docking until Monday, the Beijing Evening News reported. Poor visibility prompted three major northern ports to suspend the loading of ships on Tuesday, maritime safety agencies said. WASHINGTON - North Korea continues to pursue nuclear and ballistic missile technologies but the United States does not believe it is in a position to “tip” one of them with a nuclear warhead, State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Tuesday. North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, said on Sunday his nuclear-capable country was close to test-launching an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), raising the prospect of putting parts of the United States within range. “We do not believe that at this point in time he has the capability to tip one of these with a nuclear warhead ... but we do know that he continues to want to have those
capabilities and the programs continue to march in that direction,” Kirby told reporters. Sangging, a Person Officiating in Tooth Filling Ritual
One of the obligatory ceremonies to be implemented by the Hindus in Bali is mapandes or tooth filing ceremony. The ceremony is conducted by a sangging or tooth filer symbolically chiseling the four upper incisors and two canines. Then, it is resumed with filing the teeth by using a saw filer, so that they become flat and neat. Dr. I Made Surada, a lecturer of State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, said that sangging is person who has certain ability in the ceremony, such as making the offerings, bade tower, shrine building, sculpture, painting and others. People having the profession as sangging have already owned the skills. “To become a sangging, people have to go through a pawintenan or initiation rite according to the level of ceremony performed,” he said. Sangging, a Person Officiating in Tooth Filling Ritual_2 A sangging is not only good at making the works, but also able to perform initiation rite (spiritually animate the work). Sangging is not only able to officiate over physically (sekala), but also psychically (niskala). “Sangging has to be able to chant mantra so that a sangging should have undergone a pawintenan at its spiritual teacher,” he said. Temple priest and high priest usually also serve as sangging. In certain case, the sangging can also be assisted in the process of ceremony. At first, he consecrates the chisel, filer and gem with the meaning that the tooth to be filed will become brilliant. The palmleaf manuscripts used as reference for this tooth-filing ceremony are the Tatwa Kala, Kala Puja Pati, Semaradahana and Tutur Sanghyang
Yama. Lately, there is an official becoming a sangging. It is okay provided that it has undergone the initiation rite for the profession. Otherwise, it can only watch the procession because the ritual must be accompanied with mantra to be chanted. Without mantra, the procession will be the same as filing teeth at beauty salon or dental clinic. “Although the people are not high priests, they can also become a sangging as long as they have taken the initiation rite for the profession first,” he said. This provision is carried in the Proktah palm-leaf manuscript. The tool used to file the teeth is rice knife commonly used in earlier times. Otherwise, it can be replaced with lotus flower as the rice knife seems to be difficult to find. “Sangging having not undergone the initiation rite is believed to bring in an effect on the next descent,” he explained. He said that Hindu communities in Bali always organizes tooth filing ceremony for their sons and daughters after growing adult. This ceremony aims to control the influence of Shadripu (six enemies) in
the children because their desire will give more opportunities to be teased. When this happens, it will infiltrate and have negative impact on their behavior. On that account, they are purified by tooth filing rite whose implementation comes with a set of offerings symbolizing the teeth. In the filing ritual for the six teeth, the ends symbolize Adharma (untruth) that are then filed to make them flat symbolizing dharma. By doing so, dharma remains to control of the life of children having undergone the ritual. Tooth filing is a ritual with the meaning to discover the true
nature of human and release from the shackles of darkness or Shadripu effect in humans. It is about 20mins by road from Labuan Lalang/ Menjangan and located in West Bali National Park. The bay is about 2km wide, very shallow (3-12M), contains two small islands, and has some areas of mangrove. Mexican protesters’ blockades cause “critical situation” - Pemex
MEXICO CITY - Blockades of fuel storage terminals by protesters angered by a double-digit increase in gasoline prices has led to a “critical situation” in at least three Mexican states, state oil company Pemex said on Tuesday.
There were distribution problems in northern Chihuahua and Durango states, as well as Morelos state just south of the Mexican capital, due to the blockades affecting key terminals, Pemex said in a statement. The company added that if the blockades continue, the operations of nearby airports could also be affected.
One association of gas stations with a large presence in Mexico City, Grupo Gasolinero G500, said in a statement late on Tuesday that it would shut some of its stations on Wednesday where it has identified insufficient security. The finance ministry’s decision last week to raise fuel prices by between 14 and 20 percent effective Jan. 1 has been widely criticized across the oil-rich country, prompting numerous street protests and criticism of the government. The gasoline and diesel price spikes, derided by locals as “gasolinazos” in Spanish, follow plans the government announced last month detailing a gradual, year-long region-by-region price liberalization for 2017. JAKARTA - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said all forms of partnership with financial agencies should be formed based on good relations and mutual benefit. However, under the prevailing condition, it would be better if positive psychological form is created and the countrys economy would continue to be managed professionally amid the global condition that shows no signs of improvement. “It does not mean everything is perfect, but we will seek improvement with professionalism, accountability, and transparency and would continue to create relations with mutual respect,” Sri Mulyani said here on Tuesday. She was commenting on the breaking of all ties between the government and JP Morgan Chase Bank. “We would be open to criticism and assessment, as it is important to improve ourselves. However, an agency having big name carries big responsibility to create positive psychology instead of misleading,” she said apparently referring to the U.S. bank. She said she hope all governments partners could contribute to maintaining the national economic fundamental through positive and sustainable cooperation. She said the government has paid
good attention to the people and views of agencies having high credibility such as in the issue of tax reform. “If we think the state budget as a sources of problem, we are not hesitate to make correction as we believe professional, accountable and credible relations are important,” she said. Earlier the Finance Ministry terminated all business partnerships with JPMorgan Chase & Co. after a survey by the bank is considered potential to destabilize the countrys financial system. The government decided to stop using JPMorgan as a primary dealer and as an underwriter of its sovereign bonds. Robert Pakpahan, the ministrys director-general for budget financing and risk management told reporters here on Tuesday the research by JP Morgan cast doubt on the quality of the assets of Indonesian companies. Robert said the result of the research is “very much questionable based on not accurate and credible evaluation.” He said JPMorgan will no longer serve as sales agent for government bonds and as joint lead underwriter for the government global bonds. Its position as perception bank for tax payments will be replaced by other bank, he added. (ant)

Indonesia armed forces “suspend cooperation with Australia over insult”
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s military suspended cooperation with Australia’s armed forces last week, Indonesian officials said on Wednesday, after what media described as insulting teaching materials were found at a base in Western Australia.
But a spokesman for Indonesian President Joko Widodo said there had been no discussion of the matter with the president and that the issue had been exaggerated. “This was not a decision of the president,” spokesman Johan Budi told Reuters. Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne said merely that some activities had been “postponed”. Military cooperation between the two sides, which have important military ties ranging from counterterrorism cooperation to border protection, was suspended for “technical reasons”, a spokesman for the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) told Reuters. “All forms of cooperation have been suspended,” Major General Wuryanto said. He said a broad range of activities would be affected. “There are technical matters that need to be dis-
cussed,” Wuryanto said. Among these was the training material seen at an Australian military base, he said without elaborating. It was “highly likely” cooperation would resume once those issues were resolved, Wuryanto said. Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne acknowledged suspension of some activities and said concerns were raised by an Indonesian military officer late last year about some teaching materials and remarks at an army language training facility in Australia. “As a result, some interaction between the two defence organisations has been postponed until the matter is resolved. Cooperation in other areas is continuing,” she said. A spokesman for Indonesia’s Defence Ministry said it had first heard about the matter from the media. A spokesman for Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry did not answer calls or respond to a written request for comment. JAKARTA - Indonesian driver Rio Haryanto has suffered a major setback in his bid to return to Formula One this season after stateowned energy company Pertamina announced it was ending its sponsorship. “This year there will not be a continuation of participation by Pertamina in F1,” spokeswoman Wianda Pusponegoro said in a statement on Tuesday, noting that Pertamina could not meet a sponsorship deadline. “Of course we regret this very much, but we have already made maximal efforts for Rio and Indonesia,” she said. Haryanto, the first Indonesian to race in Formula One and only Asian driver on the grid last season, said in a text message that he had “not yet confirmed” his position and hoped to reach a decision as soon as possible. “We are still working on a plan to keep Rio in Formula One,” Haryanto’s manager, Piers Hunnisett, told Reuters. “People in the Formula One world felt he did a good job and he deserves to be there,” Hunnisett said, adding
that it would be a “great shame” if Haryanto missed out on a seat in 2017. The only likely vacancies still open are the two Manor seats and there is lingering uncertainty about that team’s future ownership. Swiss-based Sauber, who like Manor expect their drivers to bring financial backing, are expected to sign German driver Pascal Wehrlein, who is backed by Mercedes, alongside Sweden’s Marcus Ericsson. “Obviously, we were hoping to move into a team like Sauber - that was the plan but things are going to slow down a little bit,” said Hunnisett. FIFPro said that, in addition to existing problems over late payment of wages, players faced “even less chance of receiving fair treatment” after changes to the arbitration panel which rules on disputes between them and the clubs. FIFPro said the Serbian FA (FSS) had dismissed arbitrators chosen by the local players’ union Nezavisnost and replaced them with officials linked to the biggest clubs. The players also had to pay increased fees to lodge a complaint, FIFPro said. The FSS could not immediately be reached for comment. “This is a flagrant violation of the fundamental rights of the professional football players in Serbia who are now effectively playing in a lawless environment,” said FIFPro general secretary Theo van Seggelen. “We call upon the Serbian Football Association to immediately reverse its decision. “Until this situation is resolved we strongly advise players not to go and play football in Serbia.” FIFPro said that the move flouted FIFA regulations, which recom-
mend that such panels, usually known as the National Dispute Resolution Chamber, should be made up equally of arbitrators chosen by the clubs and players. Mazzarri not feeling pressure as Watford woes continue Watford manager Walter Mazzarri is confident he has the owners’ backing despite the club suffering their sixth defeat in eight games at Stoke City on Tuesday. Watford have not been helped by their growing injury list, with nine first-team players currently on the sidelines, including the likes of Roberto Pereyra, Juan Zuniga, Nordin Amrabat, Isaac Success, Daryl Janmaat and Valon Behrami. “I don’t feel under pressure because I speak with the owner every day,” Mazzarri told British media. “We know what our objective is and we’re not only looking at the next five or six matches, we are looking at the next three years. “When you look at all the injuries we have, it is difficult to get results in the Premier League. JAKARTA - Indonesian driver Rio Haryanto has suffered a major setback in his bid to return to Formula One this season after stateowned energy company Pertamina announced it was ending its sponsorship. “This year there will not be a continuation of participation by Pertamina in F1,” spokeswoman Wianda Pusponegoro said in a statement on Tuesday, noting that Pertamina could not meet a sponsorship deadline. “Of course we regret this very much, but we have already made maximal efforts for Rio and Indonesia,” she said. Haryanto, the first Indonesian to race in Formula One and only Asian driver on the grid last season, said in a text message that he had “not yet confirmed” his position and hoped to reach a decision as soon as possible. “We are still working on a plan to keep Rio in Formula One,” Haryanto’s manager, Piers Hunnisett, told Reuters. “People in the Formula One world felt he did a good job and he deserves to be there,” Hunnisett said, adding
that it would be a “great shame” if Haryanto missed out on a seat in 2017. The only likely vacancies still open are the two Manor seats and there is lingering uncertainty about that team’s future ownership. Swiss-based Sauber, who like Manor expect their drivers to bring financial backing, are expected to sign German driver Pascal Wehrlein, who is backed by Mercedes, alongside Sweden’s Marcus Ericsson. “Obviously, we were hoping to move into a team like Sauber - that was the plan but things are going to slow down a little bit,” said Hunnisett. Haryanto started 12 races for Manor in 2016, alongside Wehrlein, before being replaced by French rookie Esteban Ocon after the German Grand Prix in July. Ocon has since moved on to Force India. Mexican protesters’ blockades cause “critical situation” - Pemex
MEXICO CITY - Blockades of fuel storage terminals by protesters angered by a double-digit increase in gasoline prices has led to a “critical situation” in at least three Mexican states, state oil company Pemex said on Tuesday.
There were distribution problems in northern Chihuahua and Durango states, as well as Morelos state just south of the Mexican capital, due to the blockades affecting key terminals, Pemex said in a statement. The company added that if the blockades continue, the operations of nearby airports could also be affected.
One association of gas stations with a large presence in Mexico City, Grupo Gasolinero G500, said in a statement late on Tuesday that it would shut some of its stations on Wednesday where it has identified insufficient security. The finance ministry’s decision last week to raise fuel prices by between 14 and 20 percent effective Jan. 1 has been widely criticized across the oil-rich country, prompting numerous street protests and criticism of the government. The gasoline and diesel price spikes, derided by locals as “gasolinazos” in Spanish, follow plans the government announced last month detailing a gradual, year-long region-by-region price liberalization for 2017. Moraes said the solution to Brazil’s chronic prison violence was not just to keep opening new prisons. “We need to make sure those who deserve to be in jail stay there and those who committed minor crimes get out,” Moraes told reporters after visiting the Anisio Jobim penitentiary. “If not, we are only providing organized crime groups with new soldiers.” The minister said 42 percent of inmates in Brazil’s prisons were awaiting trial, versus a global average of just 20 percent. The prison system is among the worst in the world, according to human rights groups. Overcrowding and violence are common, and rights groups describe medieval conditions with food scarce and cells so packed that prisoners have no space to lie down.
Brazil’s federal government will provide 1.2 billion reais ($367.82 million) to states by June to beef up security and buy more X-ray machines to prevent weapons from entering prisons, Moraes said. The prison system in Amazonas state is run by two private companies that won a 27-year public contract. The massacre in Manaus occurred when members of a local criminal gang known as North Family, which controls the Anisio Jobim prison complex, attacked inmates from the rival First Capital Command (PCC), security officials said. According to state officials, 54 inmates had been recaptured by Tuesday afternoon. Britain’s EU envoy abruptly resigns months before formal Brexit talks
LONDON - Britain’s ambassador to the European Union, who sometimes clashed with London over its approach to Europe, abruptly resigned less than three months before Prime Minister Theresa May is due to trigger formal Brexit negotiations. Ivan Rogers, Britain’s envoy to the EU, told staff on Tuesday that he would step down from his post early but did not explain his reasons for resigning, said the Financial Times, which was first to report the resignation. Britain said in a statement that Rogers, who had been due to leave his post in October 2017, had stepped down to enable a successor to be appointed before May triggers formal Brexit talks by the end of March. Earlier the Finance Ministry terminated all business partnerships with JPMorgan Chase & Co. after a survey by the bank is considered potential to destabilize the countrys financial system. The government decided to stop using JPMorgan as a primary dealer and as an underwriter of its sovereign bonds. Robert Pakpahan, the ministrys director-general for budget financing and risk management told reporters here on Tuesday the research by JP Morgan cast doubt on the quality of the assets of Indonesian companies. Robert said the result of the research is “very much questionable based on not accurate and credible evaluation.” He said JPMorgan will no longer serve as sales agent for government bonds and as joint lead underwriter for the government global bonds. Indonesia armed forces “suspend cooperation with Australia over insult”
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s military suspended cooperation with Australia’s armed forces last week, Indonesian officials said on Wednesday, after what media described as insulting teaching materials were found at a base in Western Australia.
But a spokesman for Indonesian President Joko Widodo said there had been no discussion of the matter with the president and that the issue had been exaggerated. “This was not a decision of the president,” spokesman Johan Budi told Reuters. Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne said merely that some activities had been “postponed”. Military cooperation between the two sides, which have important military ties ranging from counterterrorism cooperation to border protection, was suspended for “technical reasons”, a spokesman for the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) told Reuters. “All forms of cooperation have been suspended,” Major General Wuryanto said. He said a broad range of activities would be affected. “There are technical matters that need to be dis-
cussed,” Wuryanto said. Among these was the training material seen at an Australian military base, he said without elaborating. It was “highly likely” cooperation would resume once those issues were resolved, Wuryanto said. Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne acknowledged suspension of some activities and said concerns were raised by an Indonesian military officer late last year about some teaching materials and remarks at an army language training facility in Australia. “As a result, some interaction between the two defence organisations has been postponed until the matter is resolved. Cooperation in other areas is continuing,” she said. A spokesman for Indonesia’s Defence Ministry said it had first heard about the matter from the media. A spokesman for Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry did not answer calls or respond to a written request for comment. Japanese throng shrines to pray for profitable 2017
TOKYO - Thousands packed a 1,300-year-old Shinto shrine in downtown Tokyo on Wednesday, the first official working day of 2017 in Japan, to pray for good luck and economic success in the new year. Investors did their part to kick off the year on a positive note, sending the Nikkei 225 index soaring 2.5 percent to its highest in 13 months. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was greeted by squealing crowds as he visited the Ise Grand Shrine, the holiest site in Japan’s Shinto religion, near where Group of Seven leaders met last year for a summit. “We will put the highest priority on the economy,” said Abe, dressed in a formal morning coat, at his New Year’s press conference. Although the yen’s recent weakness against the dollar has lifted sentiment among the nation’s vital exporters, the country faces persistent challenges in a sluggish, deflationary economy and an aging, shrinking population. Abe smiled and high-fived some onlookers during his shrine visit, but his speech highlighted the serious problems facing Japan. “The trend of the diminishing number of

One of the obligatory ceremonies to be implemented by the Hindus in Bali is mapandes or tooth filing ceremony. The ceremony is conducted by a sangging or tooth filer symbolically chiseling the four upper incisors and two canines. Then, it is resumed with filing the teeth by using a saw filer, so that they become flat and neat. Dr. I Made Surada, a lecturer of State Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, said that sangging is person who has certain ability in the ceremony, such as making the offerings, bade tower, shrine building, sculpture, painting and others. People having the profession as sangging have already owned the skills. “To become a sangging, people have to go through a pawintenan or initiation rite according to the level of ceremony performed,” he said. Sangging, a Person Officiating in Tooth Filling Ritual_2 A sangging is not only good at making the works, but also able to perform initiation rite (spiritually animate the work). BEIJING - The Chinese capital issued its highest red fog alert for a second day on Wednesday, keeping highways closed in and around the city which is already under a smog alert after weeks of choking winter pollution. China’s weather bureau warned of visibility of less than 50 metres in some areas, leading many airports to cancel flights. More than 2,000 tourists were stranded on a cruise ship for two extra days near the port of Tianjin, as smog prevented the ship from docking until Monday, the Beijing Evening News reported. Poor visibility prompted three major northern ports to suspend the loading of ships on Tuesday, maritime safety agencies said. Pollution alerts are common in northern China, especially during bitterly cold winters when energy demand, much of it met by coal, soars. Beijing’s smog alert is at the second-highest orange only, raising questions from some living in the city. The Ministry of Environmental Protection said it hadn’t issued a smog red alert because of discrepancies in the forecasts for different parts of Beijing. China is in the third year of a war on pollution aimed at reversing the damage done to its skies, soil and water after decades of untrammelled economic growth. But measures taken so far have had little or no effect. Heavily polluted Hebei province, which surrounds most of Beijing, said on Tuesday it had ordered all polluting firms in Tangshan, China’s biggest steelproducing city to the east of Beijing, to shut down. In a statement on its website, the Hebei government named Tangshan Luanxian Xinglong Iron and Steel Co. Ltd as a major culprit for failing to control emissions and even allowing the staff canteen to directly burn coal, contravening regulations. WASHINGTON - North Korea continues to pursue nuclear and ballistic missile technologies but the United States does not believe it is in a position to “tip” one of them with a nuclear warhead, State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Tuesday. North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, said on Sunday his nuclear-capable country was close to test-launching an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), raising the prospect of putting parts of the United States within range. “We do not believe that at this point in time he has the capability to tip one of these with a nuclear warhead ... but we do know that he continues to want to have those

Omega-3 fatty acids linked to lower risk of heart disease
WASHINGTON - Omega-3 fatty acids in fish and dietary supplements are associated with lower odds of heart disease even in people already at elevated risk because of excessive levels of fats or bad cholesterol in their blood, a research review suggests.
The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish a week and considering supplements of omega-3 fatty acids when that’s not possible. Previous research has linked omega-3s to a lower risk of abnormal heartbeats, less fats in the blood, reduced risk of artery-clogging deposits known as plaque, and slightly lower blood pressure. For the current study, researchers examined previously published research on two omega-3s: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). They found that consumption of omega-3s in food or supplements was associated with a 16 percent lower risk of heart disease in people with high triglycerides, or fats, in the blood, and a 14 percent lower risk for patients with elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the bad kind. “The collective evidence from all studies supports a beneficial role of EPA and DHA on coronary heart disease, and stronger associations were observed among those who may benefit acutely from EPA and DHA, such as those with elevated triglyceride levels and those with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,” said lead study author Dominik Alexander of EpidStat Institute, with offices in Seattle, Washington, and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
To examine the connection between omega-3s and heart disease, researchers analyzed data from 18 trials that randomly assigned about 93,000 people to get a certain amount of these nutrients. Across these randomized trials, they found omega3s associated with a 6 percent lower risk of heart disease, but this was too small to rule out the possibility it was due to chance. The study also reviewed results from another 17 previously published trials that observed about 732,000 people over long periods of time while they followed their usual diets. Over all of these studies, omega-3s were tied to a statistically meaningful 18 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease. The study was funded by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED), an advocacy group with manufacturers and sellers of omega-3 dietary supplements among its members. Several study authors have also served as consultants to manufacturers of omega-3 supplements. Limitations of the study include the wide variation in study designs for the randomized trials, which included patients with a range of eating habits and heart disease risk factors and tested omega-3s over different time periods, the authors note in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Some studies in the current analysis also didn’t track heart health or the amount of omega-3s in people’s diets at the start, making it harder to determine how much these nutrients might directly influence heart disease risk over time, the authors also point out. SEATTLE - It may be tempting to clean your ears with Q-tips or try ear candling to clear away any clogs, but it’s best to check with a professional before taking matters into your own hands, doctors advise. “Patients may try to blindly instrument their ears with cotton ear buds, bobby pins, or other tools,” said Dr. Seth Schwartz, chair of a committee that drafted new guidelines for diagnosing and treating earwax for the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. “These are generally ineffective and potentially dangerous,” Schwartz, director of the Listen For Life Center at Virginia Mason in Seattle, said by email. “Scratching of the ear canal skin can lead to pain and infection,” Schwartz added. “Sometimes they just push the wax in further, and there also is the potential for damage to the ear drum.” The body makes earwax, or cerumen, to keep ears clean and trap substances like dust and dirt, preventing debris from getting further into the ear where it can cause damage. As new skin grows in the ear canal, it pushes old earwax from the inside of the ears closer to the opening where it naturally flakes off or washes away during bathing. Often, there’s nothing wrong with having a little earwax near the
opening, doctors stress in guidelines published in Otolaryngology– Head and Neck Surgery. But when the ear’s self-cleaning process doesn’t work well, too much earwax may accumulate and partially or fully block the ear canal. This can cause problems including pain, itching, discharge from the ear, ringing in the ear or hearing loss. Roughly one in 10 children and one in 20 adults suffer from excessive earwax buildup, as do more than one third of elderly people, according to the guidelines. Excessive cleaning can irritate the ear canal, cause infection, and even increase the chances of excessive buildup, or what’s known as cerumen impaction, the guidelines note. There’s no evidence that using ear candles, a process that relies on heat to remove buildup, actually works at clearing impaction, and this can cause serious damage to the ear canal and eardrum, the guidelines also emphasize. Patients should see a doctor if they experience hearing loss, pain or feel fullness in their ears or aren’t certain whether the amount of wax is normal. People should also get a checkup if they have ear drainage or bleeding because these symptoms aren’t tied to impaction and may be an indication of other problems. (rtr)

One of the fabric merchants, A.A Ratnawati, admitted not to guess the arrival of the special shopper. Moreover, the vice president’s wife purchased a piece of songket fabric worth IDR 1 million at her shop. “I really did not guess if the shopper purchasing a piece of songket fabric at my shop is vice president’s wife,” she said happily. So, in my prediction there will be about 4.8 million until December,” said the Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, in Denpasar on Monday (Jan. 2). It is also difficult to track as they do not always check-in in Bali and work in Bali. They are very smart. Otherwise, they are arrested when getting involved in crime,” he said. BANGLI - The budget managed by the Bangli Tourism and Culture Agency in 2017 to promote tourism has decreased from the previous year. This year the agency will only obtain the promotion budget of IDR 300 million. Head of the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, said that in 2016 his agency only got the budget for tourism promotion as much as IDR 384 million. However, this year the amount is reduced to IDR 300 million. He claimed not to know exactly why the budget of tourism promotion is reduced. Though reduced, Adnyana admitted to continuously do promotion maximally with the budget available. As planned, of the IDR 300 million of promotion budget allocated, approximately IDR 200 million will be used for promotion in the activity held in Nusa Dua. In these activities, there will be a meeting with buyers in order to bring in travelers, especially foreign travelers to Bangli.

NEW YORK - Pop star Janet Jackson has given birth to her first child, a boy, at the age of 50, her publicist has said. “Janet Jackson and husband Wissam Al Mana are thrilled to welcome their new son Eissa Al Mana into the world,” the singer’s representative said in a statement to People magazine. “Janet had a stress-free, healthy delivery and is resting comfortably.” Jackson and Qatari businessman
Mr Al Mana married in 2012, and the singer in April postponed her Unbreakable world tour so they could focus on starting a family. In October, she showed off her baby bump in an exclusive photo for People magazine. Jackson, the fiercely private youngest child of the famed Jackson singing family, has not given any details of the pregnancy or where the baby was born. She and her husband have stayed out of the limelight since their nuptials, which didn’t stop tabloids
from reporting the singer had converted to Islam. In October, photos emerged of Jackson in a full-length head covering which fuelled the rumours of conversion. The singer has not commented on her religion and as several social media users pointed out, the covering was in fact an item from a menswear line released that year. MANAUS, Brazil - Brazil’s justice minister on Tuesday proposed an overhaul of the penal system to tackle chronic prison overcrowding a day after 56 inmates were massacred in the deadliest riot in two decades. The minister, Alexandre de Moraes, said Brazil needed to improve conditions in jails, which are home to an estimated 600,000 inmates, after visiting the prison in the jungle city of Manaus where violence erupted between rival drug gangs. In an incident that shocked even Brazilians inured to regular outbreaks of prison violence, machete-wielding gangs decapitated inmates on Monday and threw their bodies over a wall of the penitentiary, which houses more than three times its capacity. Hundreds of anguished relatives,
hugging each other and sobbing uncontrollably, gathered outside the morgue in Manaus, waiting to discover if their loved ones were alive. A morgue employee emerged from time to time to read from a list of those confirmed dead. “I never imagined something like this could happen,” cried Diana after learning that her son Ronei Pinheiro had been killed. “Please help me bury my son.” Officials were forced to rent a refrigerated truck to store bodies, while medical examiners tried to identify the remains.
A war for control of the lucrative drug trade fueled the latest gang violence in Brazil’s understaffed prisons, raising concerns that Monday’s massacre could unleash a wave of reprisals.
