MIAMI — Legendary rocker Lenny Kravitz’s photo exhibit was never meant to turn out the way it did. While shooting photos on his days off from touring, Kravitz set out hoping to capture soulful photographs and people in their everyday environments. But each time he stepped out with his camera, fans followed and paparazzi flocked. “It started out being a real nuisance because I wanted to shoot. I wanted time to do my thing and be anonymous,” Kravitz told The Associated Press during a personal tour of his exhibit Wednesday. The black and white collection titled “Flash” runs through Dec. 6 as part of Art Basel Miami Beach. He blames the social media craze for people forgetting basic manners and respect for one another.

“It’s really weird that people feel they have a right to invade your space in any kind of way.” After several frustrating encounters, the rocker turned the camera on the crowds and started clicking — almost a joke at first. But then something changed. “Life and art is about accepting and taking what you’re organically given ... this is what life is bringing me at this moment, don’t be pissed off about it.” As he developed the photos, he found himself no longer categorizing the people, but sensing their individual stories in their eyes, expressions and moods. “I just began to really look into the people” and found “curiosity, happiness, pain, intrigue ... frustration, love, everything, just people, human emotions.” Kravitz is among dozens of

celebs, including Hilary Swank, Sylvester Stallone, Eva Longoria and Katie Holmes, who are in town for the prestigious art fair, which is an extension of the annual contemporary art fair in Basel, Switzerland. The fair officially opens Thursday, but many independent fairs and star-studded parties are already underway. Kravitz, who has lived in Miami on and off for decades, said the exhibit also speaks to the culture’s obsession with documenting everything from food to nail art, yet often don’t realize the human connections they’re giving up in return. Police identified the pair as Syed Farook, a 28-year-old US citizen who worked for the local county, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, whose nationality was unknown. They said the suspects were either married or engaged. Jarrod Burguan, San Bernardino’s police chief, confirmed that both were dead, and that police no longer believed a third suspect mentioned earlier was at large.

The shooters targeted a year-end party taking place at a social services center in San Bernardino, about an hour’s drive east of Los Angeles, killing 14 people and wounding 17 more. “We don’t have the motive at this point,” the police chief said. “We have not ruled out terrorism.” The massacre drew an angry response from President Barack Obama, who once again urged Congress to pass tougher gun control measures to stem America’s epidemic of gun violence. According to Burguan, Farook was an environmental inspector who had worked for the county health department for five years. He and Malik were dressed in military-style gear and carried assault weapons as they burst into the auditorium where the bloodbath took

They should have a good quality and capability in order to compete with teachers from overseas. An education observer, Prof. Dr. Putu Rumawan Salain said expansion of foreign workers coming to compete for job opportunities in Bali should be addressed seriously. Late response is feared to result in the marginalization and loss of competitiveness of the local labor in Bali. Moreover, the majority of foreign workers have better work ethic and discipline as well as skills needed by businesses or industries in Bali. According to Rumawan Salain, all the components in Bali must immediately make selfimprovement in order to be ready to face the free and extremely competitive era. A similar commitment should also be carried out by institutions of higher education including vocational high school (SMK) incidentally posing the producer of labor candidates. Standard salary of non-permanent teachers should be set

SALARY of the non-permanent teachers serving at a number of schools in Bali is still considered too low. Moreover, a teacher at one of the kindergartens in Klungkung is only paid at IDR 150,000 per month by the school management. This condition is certainly very worrying because it is considered so far under the feasible category. In response to this, an education observer, Dr. I Made Gede Putra Wijaya, urged the government to immediately establish the minimal standard salary for non-permanent teachers in Bali.

“It is time to make the minimum standard salary for non-permanent teachers. By doing so, school management cannot hire nonpermanent teachers arbitrarily,” said Putra Wijaya. According to Putra Wijaya,

school management hiring nonpermanent teachers is also obliged to pay attention to their welfare. The school may not constantly argue that non-permanent teachers do not work based on the spirit of devotion so that the salary issue is not important.

“In principle, when hiring nonpermanent teachers it means that the school must be ready to pay attention to their welfare,” he said. Furthermore, Putra Wijaya also asked the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) at all levels to struggle for the welfare of the nonpermanent teachers. At the very least, the organization must struggle for the salaries of non-permanent teachers that can meet the regional minimum salary (UMR) applying in the district / municipality where the non-permanent teachers serve. “It will be better if the minimal standard salary of non-permanent

teachers is set forth in the Regional Bylaw (Perda). By doing so, there is a legal instrument so that the nonpermanent teachers can also get a decent life,” he said. Considering the school management has different ability to hire nonpermanent teachers, Putra Wijaya also hoped the district / municipal government in Bali to be able to allocate funds for incentives / allowances for non-permanent teachers. This allowance is necessary to supplement the salaries prepared by school so that the overall salary can meet eligibility standards. “Non-permanent teachers also

play important role in improving the quality of education like what civil servant teachers and permanent teachers of foundation employed at private schools do. On that account, they are also entitled to get a decent income,” he warned. As reported earlier, the welfare of non-permanent teachers remains to become an unresolved problem. There is a wide gap between the non-permanent teachers and teachers with the status as civil servant. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Pantone’s color of the year grows to 2 colors

NEW YORK — Serenity now, people, with some Rose Quartz mixed in. The experts at the Pantone Color Institute have chosen not one but two colors of the year — named thusly — in a complementary pairing that spans fashion, media, packaging, housewares and a desire for more tranquility and calm in actual life.

Or so they say — they being color analysts, who span the globe in search of trends. Rose Quartz is a pale pink and Serenity is close but not quite what once was referred to as baby blue. In fact, Pantone believes the blend reflects a gender neutrality that has strengthened over the last year or so and is sure to carry through to 2016 and beyond, said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the institute, based in Carlstadt, New Jersey. It’s the first time Pantone has picked two colors of the year since it debuted the designation in 1999. “This is a fusion of two shades,” Pressman said in a recent interview. “Rose Quartz is a warm and embracing gentle rose tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity reflects a mindset of inner peace.” Those things, she said, are in short supply. “Our lives are stressful, and what we’re seeing is consumers trying to cut out that noise by balancing the fast pace, their fractured lives, their hurried lives, with some downtime and some calm, and the opportunity to just switch off,” Pressman said. But there’s more to the pairing than a desire for emotional nourishment, more quiet and more relaxation. “There’s a calmness, but there’s also a happiness to it,” Pressman said. In travels to home and interior design shows around the world, Pantone came up with examples of the two colors in lighting, kitchen wares and home accen ts s u ch as throw pillows for the living room and sets of bedding. Nowhere are the two colors stronger than in fashion — as seen on the streets, on the backs of celebrities and on catwalks around the globe, she said. Chanel put the two together in its haute couture collection for fall 2015. Prada did the same for spring/summer, as did Fendi. Thom Browne put the color merge front and center for his 2016 resort collection for women,

while Richard James and Roberto Cavalli used the two together for men on spring 2016 runways. Blurring gender lines on catwalks had Valentino showing pale pink athletic-inspired shoes for men with a band of Serenity blue, along with leather backpacks showing off geometric splashes of the same shades. In fashion, women have borrowed from men in suiting, color and silhouette for years. And they still do. “But the real news is that men are exploring, and they’re experimenting with their other side,” Pressman said. Pink for girls and blue for boys hasn’t always been the norm: In 1927, Time magazine printed a chart showing genderappropriate colors for girls and boys as reflected in the wares of major U.S. retailers, but even then opinions differed, Pressman said. Filene’s in Boston suggested parents dress boys in pink, as did Best & Co. in New York, Halle’s in Cleveland and Marshall Field in Chicago. After World War II, with the return women back into their homes, pink rose to ultrafeminine levels. Today, retailers are promoting collections intended to be worn by both men and women. “People want choices. They don’t want to be pushed into a specific direction,” Pressman said. “They want to make that choice on their own. Today’s genderless styling is definitely a more modern approach than we’ve seen in the past, and it’s not necessarily trying to make a man look like a woman or a woman look like a man. Delegates of Bali cancel their attendance in Africa

DENPASAR - Delegates of Bali led by the lecturer of the ISI Denpasar, Prof. I Wayan Dibia, canceled their attendance in the meeting of the UNESCO Establishment in Namibia, Africa, on December 1 to 2. Actually, the delegates of Bali consisting of three dancers have been prepared to perform the Nawa Sari Dance. This dance represents the nine Balinese traditional dances proposed to become the Immaterial World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. “But due to particular reasons, such as difficulties of visa transit in South Africa, we cannot leave because if it is imposed we will probably arrive there when the session is over,” said Dibia when giving a press conference together with the Head of Bali Culture Agency in

the public relations press room of the government of Bali Province, Wednesday (Dec. 2). According to him, the dance would be originally performed after the decision of the nine Balinese traditional dances into the Immaterial World Cultural Heritage by

After that, we present the dance for six minutes,” he explained. Beratha added that the nine proposed Balinese traditional dances

were put into the session after lunch at Namibia local time or about 8:30 p.m. The session is estimated to end at 11:30 p.m. On that account, the results of the UNESCO session can just be announced on Thursday (Dec. 3). The nine Balinese traditional dances proposed include the Barong Ket, Joged, Legong Kraton, Wayang Wong Dance-Drama, Gambuh Dance-Drama, Sidakarya Mask, Ritual Baris, Sanghyang and Rejang. SINGARAJA - To maintain the sanctity of temples in Bali is not an easy matter. It needs a shared awareness with all the components of the Hindus. Lately, many temples are often made into tourist object to be visited. Due to erroneous interpretation of tourist guides, they are not even half-hearted to escort guests to temple main area. This condition is inversely proportional to what has been done by the pengempon or supporting devotees of Pura Bukit Pucak Sinunggal at Tajun customary village, Kubutambahan. The supporting devotees expressly prohibit foreign travelers from entering the innermost courtyard of the temple just to take a photo, and not to pray. The understanding on the temple sanctity and uniqueness should be instilled early. Bali Island with a variety of contents is a blessing and it is made sacred by the Hindus. It is without exception for the temple used to say prayers and worship the sanctity of God. Prohibition of foreign travelers from entering the innermost area of the temple main area is intended for taking photographs, not for saying prayers. As evidence, the supporting devotees of the temple put a high awareness of the temple sanctity and its contents. “If there are foreign travelers to enter the temple not for saying prayers, but only taking photographs, we still do not give permission. It is intended to maintain the sanctity and uniqueness of the temple along with the residing deities. Temple sanctity should be maintained and do not let the taksu (divine vibration) and the energy decline,” said Jro Made Kerta, the priest of Pura Bukit Pucak Sinunggal at Tajun customary village, Wednesday (Dec. 2) coinciding with the celebration of Pagerwesi Day. Supporting devotees maintain the temple sanctity with the hope that it will survive physically and psychically. This temple is guarded by the ancestors from time immemorial,” he said. Foreign travelers are only allowed to make a visit until outside the temple area, and not allowed to enter. At least, through this rule the temple sanctity is better maintained. Moreover, it coincides with the celebration of Pagerwesi, where people are taken to improve their faith and devotion. “If there are guests making a visit, they can only do it outside the temple and does not get into the innermost temple courtyard,” he said. Karangasem to arrange its catus pata

AMLAPURA - In the near future, the town of Amlapura will be arranged. Center of the arrangement will start from the catus pata or central intersection of Amlapura and surrounding areas by building a number of supporting infrastructures as a heritage town. With the budget of IDR 5 billion from the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, it is confirmed to realize next year. The Head of the Karangasem Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda), Ketut Sedana Merta, accompanied by Spatial Planning Subdivision Head I Nyoman Siki Ngurah said that in accordance with the detailed engineering design (DED) the budget was originally drafted at IDR 15 billion. However, the funding disbursement from central government to Karangasem will be made gradually. Next year, a total of IDR 5 billion will be disbursed from working unit of the Settlement Area Development, Directorate General of Human Settlement, Ministry of Public Works and the Public Housing Affairs. Last week, he admitted to have presented this plan to central government. Then, the team of central government has gone down to check the location of the town heritage of Karangasem, where Karangasem belongs to heritage town of category A. In other words, it includes in the best 10 heritage towns in Indonesia. Selection of the catus pata as the beginning of the arrangement, he said, has been in conformity with the input of cultural and historical figures in Karangasem. His agency also actively made coordination with royal palace and the Karangasem customary village. It is the location of zero point of Amlapura serving as the meeting point of sky and the earth, which has always been used to perform mecaru or animal sacrifice in the town of Amlapura. The location is just between the Puri Gede reflecting the social and cultural aspect; Puri Agung reflecting the central government; Pura Madura reflecting the history and Pura Kelodan serving as the center of literary development. “In other regions, the catus pata is identical to statue, but our catus pata serves as the zero point of the town center,” he explained. As the arrangement process, it will be built a number of infrastructures such as square, the return of the functions of public spaces like pedestrian, sport venues, heritage town gates to different sidewalk from other towns. “With this arrangement, the town center will be more visible and looks more obvious,” said Siki Ngurah. He delivered that physical work will start next year. Currently, the arrangement is focused on the area outside the royal palace, while the arrangement inside the royal place is recognized to still be constrained by asset status. Nevertheless, since it is built in stages, the planning process has been carried out completely, so that it just needs to implement every year with the joint commitment of central government. Earlier, for this year the central government has disbursed IDR 5 billion for the asset arrangement of Tenganan Pegringsingan heritage town. Such amount of budget will be used to repair some supporting tourism facilities, without changing the heritage elements. Tenganan Pegringsingan has been registered as a heritage town asset since 2011. Karangasem is one of the 16 heritage towns in Indonesia. Related to heritage asset utilization, previously it has been held the Tenganan Pegringsingan Heritage Exhibition in 2013. With the status as a town heritage asset, the local government hoped that Tenganan Pegringsingan remains sustainable over time. (kmb31)

Search for Malaysian jet refocuses in southern Indian Ocean

CANBERRA — The deep sea hunt for the missing Malaysian airliner has been refocused on the southern reaches of an expansive search zone based on new analysis released on Thursday of the Boeing 777’s final hours and how it might have plunged into the Indian Ocean with 239 people aboard after running out of fuel.

Searchers have been combing a 120,000-square-kilometer (46,000square-mile) expanse of the Indian Ocean since October last year but have yet to turn up any trace of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. A wing flap found in July on the other side of the Indian Ocean when it washed up on remote Reunion Island is the only debris recovered. The new analysis by a Defense Department agency confirmed “the highest probability” the final resting place for the plane was within the southern end of the search zone. Two ships towing side-scan sonar have continued the search during the harsh southern hemisphere winter months. A third ship will join the search in the new priority area on Saturday, said Australian Transport Safety Bureau chief commissioner Martin Dolan, who runs the search on behalf of Malaysia. The latest ship is equipped with a video camera inside an underwa-

ter unmanned submarine that can examine rough terrain and objects of interest detected by sonar that require a closer look. A Chinese ship will join the search in late January equipped with Synthetic Aperture Sonar, state of the art technology that provides higher resolution images than the standard sonar now being used, Dolan said. Some experts have been critical that the sonar was not used throughout the search and have questioned whether wreckage might have already been overlooked. Dolan said about 4 percent of the area already searched would have to be searched again because of gaps in the sonar mapping and because some objects that had been detected could not yet be ruled out. About 54,000 square kilometers (21,000 square miles) of the 98,000 square kilometers (38,000 square miles) of the highest-priority search

zone have already been searched, the bureau’s search director Peter Foley said. That area is 2,800 kilometers (1,700 miles) southwest of the Australian port of Fremantle. Foley said the Synthetic Aperture Sonar and the camera would be used to examine a trench that runs north-south through the high priority zone, the Geelvinck Fracture Zone. “It’s very, very difficult terrain. Very steep drop offs. It’s pretty bad,” Foley said. “A lot of the area is hard and rocky and that’s the hardest place to search.” The latest analysis by a team of mathematicians and a satellite expert will likely be the last of the scant satellite clues that have been used to track the airliner’s final hours after it disappeared from radar on March 8, 2014, during a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. One of the engines sent an hourly signal to a satellite and a final signal when it apparently ran out of fuel. Team leader Neil Gordon said dozens of flights around the world were tracked to fine tune the analysis of these engine signals and to test the accuracy of their methodology.(ap)

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — A Cambodian court sentenced an unlicensed medical practitioner to 25 years in prison Thursday after finding him responsible for infecting more than 100 villagers with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, by reusing unsanitized syringes. At least 10 of the infected people have died. Yem Chrin was found guilty of cruel behavior resulting in death, intentionally spreading HIV and practicing medicine without a license, said a spokesman for the court in the northwestern province of Battambang. His trial was conducted over five days in October. Yem Chrin, 56, was arrested last December and taken into protective custody, with authorities fearing he might be lynched by residents of Roka village, where at least 106 of 800 people tested were found to be infected with HIV. Local newspapers reported the total was 300. He insisted he meant no harm and was only trying to help people in the community where he practiced from 1996 to 2014. The infected patients ranged in age from 3 to 82 and included Buddhist monks. Cambodia had a high HIV prevalence rate of 2.0 percent in 1998, but an aggressive campaign to promote safe sex brought the figure down to an estimated 0.7 percent last year, according to the U.N. agency that spearheads the worldwide fight against AIDS. Cambodia, one of the world’s poorest countries, has inadequate health care facilities, especially in rural areas, where villagers often have no recourse but to rely on unlicensed medical practitioners who have trained themselves to treat minor ailments and give injections. The court also ordered Yem Chrin to pay a fine to the state and damages to the victims. He was barred for life from practicing medicine again, the court spokesman said. The charge of cruel behavior resulting in death was a step down from the murder charge he originally faced, which would have made him liable for life imprisonment. ECB set to boost stimulus measures

FRANKFURT - The European Central Bank is widely expected to step up efforts to kick start chronically low inflation in the euro area at a meeting Thursday, but analysts warn the measures could fall short of market expectations. At the ECB’s last monetary policy meeting of the year, president Mario Draghi is set to announce a beefing up of the bank’s controversial bond purchase programme, known as QE, and a possible cut in key interest rates, already at historic lows, analysts say. In a bid to bring eurozone inflation back up to levels conducive to healthy economic growth, the ECB has already unleashed an unprecedented series of easing measures. It has slashed borrowing costs, made vast amounts of cheap loans available to banks and most recently embarked on a programme to buy around 60 billion euros of sovereign bonds each month until at least September 2016. But area-wide inflation is still stubbornly low, standing at just 0.1 percent in November, far below the ECB’s target of just under 2.0 percent. ECB watchers therefore believe a new round of action is a done deal. Andrew Cates at the Royal Bank of Scotland said he was pencilling in a further reduction in the ECB’s deposit rate, already in negative territory at minus 0.2 percent and an increase and extension of the QE (quantitative easing) programme. “We expect the ECB to deliver a deposit rate cut to minus 0.4 percent, the monthly asset purchase programme to rise to 85 billion euros and an extension of the programme to March 2017,” he said. “Following a succession of dovish signals from ECB officials in recent weeks, and most notably from Draghi, we think anything less than this would risk disappointing market expectations,” he said. “Santa Mario is coming to Euroland,” said ING DiBa economist Carsten Brzeski. “After six weeks of speculation and anticipation, we expect Draghi to present a package of rate cuts and additional QE, for the Euroland’s sake,” he said. Fed says more consumer spending, housing boost US growth WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve says the U.S. economy grew at a modest pace this fall, lifted by higher consumer spending and more home sales and construction. The Fed said Wednesday in its latest snapshot of the economy that nine of its 12 regional banks reported growth was modest or moderate from early October through mid-November. The New York Fed said growth leveled off, while it slowed in Boston and was mixed in Kansas City. The Fed’s report suggests that healthy

consumer spending is offsetting overseas headwinds that have weighed on U.S. manufacturers. The report, known as the Beige Book, is released eight times a year and consists of anecdotal reports from businesses in each of the 12 districts. It will be used for discussion when the central bank next meets Dec. 15-16. Fed officials at that meeting are widely expected to raise interest rates for the first time in nine years. In a speech Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen signaled that a

rate increase is likely, provided that the economy continues to grow at its current pace and hiring stays healthy. The November jobs report will be released Friday, and economists forecast that it will show that employers added 200,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate remained 5 percent. All 12 of the Fed’s districts reported that hiring picked up in the past two months. Russia delivers missile systems to Iran

MOSCOW — The arms trade adviser to President Vladimir Putin says Russia has begun delivering S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran, according to the Russian state news agency Tass. Tass quoted Vladimir Kozhin as saying Thursday that the implementation of the contract for the delivery of the S-300s has begun and the deliveries have started. He didn’t provide any specifics. Russia in 2010 froze a deal to supply advanced longrange S-300 missile systems to Iran, linking the decision to U.N. sanctions. President Vladimir Putin lifted the suspension earlier this year following Iran’s deal with six world powers that curbed its nuclear program in exchange for relief from international sanctions. Officials said last month that Russia and Iran finalized the contract for their delivery. The S-300 deal has long worried Israel and other countries in the region, as well as the U.S., which see it as destabilizing. (ap)

NEW DELHI — The heaviest rainfall in more than 100 years has devastated swathes of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, with thousands forced to leave their submerged homes and schools, offices and a regional airport shut for a second day Thursday. At least 269 people had been killed in the state since heavy rains started in the beginning of November, said India’s Home Minister Rajnath Singh, although no deaths have been reported in the latest deluge. “I can’t even believe that this much water was possible in Chennai,” one woman told NDTV channel as she stood in waist-deep water in the state capital. “We don’t have any food. We don’t have any milk,” she said, adding that she had stepped out to see if she could find a shop selling some food. “But I’m scared to walk down this road. The water comes up almost to my hips.” Chennai has received more than 330 millimeters (13 inches) of rain over the last 24 hours, which is significantly higher than the regional average for the entire month of December, Singh said. While the downpour eased early Thursday, the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted more heavy rain in several parts of the state through the rest of the week. The rains have been caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, the

agency said. Separately, news reports said that flood waters released from a lake on the outskirts of Chennai inundated more neighborhoods in the city. The Adyar river, which runs through Chennai before draining into the Bay of Bengal, was flowing above a danger mark. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi surveyed the destruction and flooding from an air force helicopter. An aerial view of Chennai showed low-lying neighborhoods as well the city’s airport almost completely submerged. India’s main monsoon season runs from June through September, but the period between October to December — also called the retreating monsoon — brings the most rainfall to India’s southeastern coastal areas. The extreme weather in Chennai comes as heads of state are meeting in Paris to try and work out a new treaty to limit global warming and deal with its effects. However, experts say the floods in the city are most directly linked to the El Nino weather pattern, when the waters of the Pacific Ocean get warmer than usual. “This year saw the strongest El Nino ever recorded,” said G.P. Kumolo otimistic head elections to run peacefully

JAKARTA - Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo expressed optimism that the upcoming regional head elections (pilkada) would run peacefully. “We are being supported by the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs and his staff to ensure that the simultaneous pilkada will run smoothly and peacefully,” Minister Kumolo stated while speaking during a discussion on “Pilkada of Integrity” organized by Sinar Harapan daily on Wednesday. The authorities have declared alert status in several regions considered prone to conflicts during the elections. Coordination with the election executors, the General Election Commission (KPU), and the General Election Supervisory Body (Bawalu) is expected to help minimize potential problems, he noted. Three days prior to the simultaneous pilkada to be held on December 9, 2015, the home affairs minister will organize a coordination meeting with the political, legal and security minister and his personnel. The minister is hopeful that maximum security measures would be able to anticipate conflicts among supporters of the candidates.

In the meantime, KPU Chairman Husni Kamil Manik remarked that there are still problems concerning the disbursement of the pilkada budget in some regions. He pointed out that 13 regions had not yet disbursed over 50 percent of the pilkada budget. The home affairs minister has called the heads of the 13 regions to discuss the budgeting problem, according to Manik. Another problem is the involvement of some candidates in legal cases being handled by the Supreme Court (MA), he added. Bawaslu Chief Muhammad pointed out that his personnel will be stern in dealing with problems concerning candidates that might arise during the pilkada. He urged the government to encourage the state civilian apparatus to remain neutral during the implementation of pilkada. Indonesia is gearing up for the first-ever simultaneous pilkada to be held in some 269 regions, or 53 percent of the country’s entire regions. JAKARTA - Indonesia promised Wednesday to speed up preparations for the 2018 Asian Games after the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) expressed concern about slow progress. Jakarta was awarded the games in September last year after the original host Vietnam withdrew due to economic problems, but the late decision meant it had four years instead of the usual six to prepare. OCA officials visited Jakarta this week to get a progress report from their Indonesian counterparts and raised concerns about a series of issues. These included the renovation of a Jakarta stadium which has not yet begun, and the failure to start construction of an athletes’ village due to a land ownership dispute,

said sports ministry spokesman Gatot Dewa Broto. “We only have around two years... we have to speed up,” he told AFP, adding that a country should ideally have eight years to prepare. Leicester’s Vardy looks to extend scoring record at Swansea

LONDON — Record already in hand, Leicester striker Jamie Vardy is ready to make the most of every chance he gets in his pursuit of more goals. Vardy can extend his scoring streak to 12 straight Premier League games on Saturday when Leicester plays at Swansea. “You have to realize that there are not a lot of chances coming your way,” Vardy said. “Once you get them, you need to be taking them. Real Madrid could be disqualified from Copa del Rey BARCELONA, Spain — Real Madrid risks being disqualified from the Copa del Rey after fielding an ineligible player on Wednesday in a 3-1 victory over Cadiz, its opening match in the competition. On a night when Barcelona advanced with an easy 6-1 win against third-tier Villanovense in a first round, second leg match, Madrid and its coach Rafa Benitez were heading for trouble from Spain’s soccer federation after fielding Denis Cheryshev in a first-leg game. Cheryshev rose through Madrid’s youth ranks after joining the club in 2002, but he played on loan for Villarreal last season and picked up a one-match ban after collecting three yellow cards in the Copa. Having since left Villarreal and returned to Madrid, the suspension should have been active on Wednesday. Instead, Cheryshev took the field and went on to score Madrid’s opening goal. Federation rules specify that if a club fields an ineligible player, it faces disqualification from the competition — provided the opposing club lodges an objection.
