WARM SPRINGS, Georgia — Filmmaker Ken Burns says he wants to tell the story of the Roosevelts, their strengths and failures, in an upcoming documentary on one of America’s most famous political families.

Burns, acclaimed for his documentaries on the Civil War, jazz and World War II, previewed on Saturday part of the 14-hour series that will air next year. Burns’ film explores the political and family ties between President Theodore Roosevelt and President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor. The Roosevelts lived and governed during a time of enormous change in the U.S, including the country’s emergence as a world power, the Great Depression, World War II and the civil rights struggle. Burns said the Roosevelt political legacy remains relevant now as U.S. leaders debate how big the federal government should be. All three Roosevelts backed an expanded role for the central government. The political populism of Theodore Roosevelt in the early 1900s — for example, his antimonopoly stances and efforts to improve food safety — arguably found a new expression in the politics championed by Franklin Roosevelt to alleviate the suffering inflicted by the Great Depression in the 1930s.
The film follows Eleanor Roosevelt as she emerged from her role as first lady after Roosevelt’s death and led the United Nations as it drafted an international charter of human rights. The film also shows the leaders’ flaws. Theodore Roosevelt encouraged a rebellion in Panama so the United States could secure the land needed for the Panama Canal. Franklin Roosevelt was unfaithful to Eleanor.

To reach the location, people previously only relied on sea transportation such as boat. Now, everything has changed. Hindu pilgrims coming to say prayers in the Sakenan Temple no longer needs to ride boat. They can now park in the outermost courtyard. The reclamation conducted on Serangan Island since 1996 by PT BTID has changed the behavior of a number of local societies. Many changes have occurred both positive and negative afflicting the residents of the Turtle Island. Afterward, the road access to Serangan Island with an area of 112 hectares was to increase around four times of the previous width. Now, the Serangan Island has reached 491 hectares. In other words, the acreage of sea reclaimed amounts to 379 hectares. The reclamation happens in the eastern, southwestern and northwestern coast of the island. Customary villagers of Bongan Gede, Bongan Puseh village, Tabanan, had a unique tradition in celebrating Kuningan feast day, Saturday (Nov 2). They held mesuryak namely throwing money ritual to accompany the return of ancestral soul to heaven. Unfortunately, despite being a regular activity, the ritual did not attract tourists, especially foreign tourists. Of some hamlets at Bongan Puseh village, the most festive ritual occurred at Bongan Gede hamlet. This hereditary ritual was started with worship at family shrine. Then, it was resumed by placing the oblation in front of the house compound gates. Around 10:00 p.m., the mesuryak ritual began. After delivering to the oblation, all family
members were then throwing money upwards. The rain of rupiah in various denominations has become a bone of contention for local residents. It started with the denomination of IDR 1,000 to IDR 100,000. As soon as the money was thrown, people immediately burst and scrambled. Not infrequently, they mutually interplayed. The tradition of throwing money is made in turn, from southern tip to northern boundary of the village. It was intended in order people could scramble the money fairly. They were dominated by youth. A large number of people wished to involve in the event more than 100 people. Since many people participated in the mesuryak, total money spent could reach IDR 20 million more. “It has become a ritual for generations. Each Kuningan, we
escort the ancestors back to heaven with mesuryak. In other words, because of being happy we then throw money,” said Gede Wardana, hamlet chief of Bongan Gede, Made Wardana. The money thrown symbolized the provision of the ancestors. Based on nominal capacity, the richer a family, the more money was thrown. According to Wardana, there was no official source when the mesuryak ritual began. However, the most festive tradition occurred at his hamlet. He hoped such regular tradition could be promoted into a tourist destination. “So far, there has never been a group of travelers visiting and seeing the mesuryak tradition whereas it is one of the icons of Tabanan town,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

HOUSTON — Thousands of people turned up Saturday for the chance to take home a piece of the iconic, but dilapidated Houston Astrodome, once dubbed the “eighth wonder of the world.” The “yard sale” and auction got under way in the morning at the Reliant Center, the convention center adjacent to the now-closed domed stadium. More than 4,000 people were inside or waiting to get in by about 10 a.m. Saturday, Reliant Park officials said, the line twisting through the center and out the door. For those looking for a cheap memento at the sale, a 12-inch by 12-inch (30-centimeter by 30-centimeter) piece of AstroTurf cost $20. It sold out before the sale ended. Seats went for $200 a pair, and after the in-person stock sold out Saturday, people could purchase seats that they can pick up in December. Larger items, including autographed lockers and dugout benches, were auctioned off. Dave Warwick bought two of the beat-up, scratched red-and-black turnstiles that once let crowds into the Astrodome for $4,100 a piece. He said they brought back fond memories of when, as a sailor from Liverpool, England, he visited friends in 1966 and saw his first baseball game. “That’s the first entrance into the Astrodome. It’s the click. I just wanted them,” said Warwick, 71, who ended up moving to Houston in 1983 and now runs a shipping agency. Opened in 1965, the Astrodome was the world’s first multipurpose domed stadium. It was home to the Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros and the National Football League’s Houston Oilers. But no professional sports team has played there since 1999 and the stadium has been closed to all events since 2009.

The ban affects people who took out licenses to produce and sell clothing or household products, but in reality made money mostly from reselling foreign goods imported into Cuba one overstuffed suitcase at a time. “The government ratifies its firm determination not to permit violations of any kind,” the announcement in Granma read.
According to Trade Ministry’s Head of International Trade Iman Pambagyo as the host of the event, Indonesia has received confirmations from the 159 WTO member delegations and 25 observer countries. “The observers will send some 400 delegates to the meeting,” he said. DENPASAR - Bali’s economy is predicted to grow 6.7 percent this year driven by investment in the tourism and infrastructure sector. In the first nine months of this year investment reached Rp28.78 trillion in Bali dominated by investment in the tourism and infrastructure sectors. Investment in the tourism and infrastructure sector accounted for 60 percent of the total investment in Bali, head of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistic Gede Suarjana said. “With the new investment, Bali is set to chalk up a 6.7 percent growth in economy this year,” Gede Suarjana said here on Thursday. The investment included Rp6 trillion in foreign direct investment, Rp16.65 trillion by Indonesian private companies and Rp6.13 trillion by the government. “The investment by the government included Rp3.32 trillion in spending from the state budget and Rp719 billion spending from the provincial budget and Rp2.08 trillion spending by the district/ city administration,” Gede Suarjana said. The estimate of investment by the private sector was based on investment credit by the private sector, he added. A smaller part of the investment was used in the agricultural sector including animal husbandry and fishery, he said. Investment in the fishery sector was mainly for the provision of fishing boats, he said. He said the agricultural sector is included in the priority list for development in Bali but investors are still more interested in the tourism sector. He said it is necessary to modernize infrastructure in the agricultural sector to attract investors to the sector.

Restore glory of Buleleng’s grape
Farmers start to grow new grape variety
BLACK grapes have become the pride of Buleleng County. Even, Buleleng County is probably the only county in Bali which has the center of grape having met the needs for grapes of other counties in Bali and Java. However since the past few years, many farmers cleared their grapevine and re-cultivated their land for planting rice. This occurred after the drop of grape price and sharp price hike of fertilizer and pesticide. In addition, the black grapes grown in Banjar, Seririt and Gerokgak subdistrict have become less competitive than imported grapes having sweeter flavor. “Although a few people consume, our grapes can actually still be sent to the wine factory. Unluckily, the price is still low so that we cannot get the return on investment,” said a farmer at Tangguwisia village, Seririt subdistrict. When many farmers cut their grapevines and converted their land into paddy fields, the acreage of paddy filed in Buleleng indeed increased. So the pride of Buleleng once becoming the barn of grapes in Bali faded. Actually, Buleleng had the potential to become the center of grape producers aside from other local fruits such as mango, mangosteen and durian. When numerous grape growers gave in, in fact a group of farmers in Buleleng remained keen to develop the grape cultivation. If the grave of old variety was no longer sold well in the market, many farmer groups were then developing a new variety of grape offering superiority in terms of shape and flavor. Farmer groups were still continuing to develop the new variety of grapes such as the Amerta Nadi in Banjar, Wilacita Karya at Kalisada village, Seririt subdistrict as well as Buana Mekar and Sari Bumi at Banyupoh village, Gerokgak. Later on, farmers at Tangguwisia village in Seririt subdistrict also began to develop a new variety of grapes believed to be able to restore the pride of Buleleng as the largest grape producer in Bali. The Head of Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said that his party continued to encourage farmers to develop a new variety of grape. Last month, four farmer groups in Banjar, Seririt and Gerokgak, were granted with red grape cutting having sweeter taste than the grapes grown previously. “The cutting of red grape poses the results of research by the Orange and Strawberry Research Institute in Malang,” he said. Each farmer group was given 250 grape cuttings to be planted in each region. Later, after the grape had developed, the other farmer groups were also expected to develop similar variety. “We believe this new variety of grape can restore the enthusiasm of farmers for growing grapes,” he said. Meanwhile, a number of farmers at Tangguwisia village started planting superior grape such as Blue Probolinggo, Red Prince (Red Probolinggo) and Black Carolina. These varieties of grape were produced by the research of Mahasaraswati University in collaboration with the Sumatra Education and Research Valley (SERV). If the cultivation of superior grape variety worked well, the grape would be able to meet the needs for grape as table wine served in five-star hotels because the quality of wine was determined by the taste, size, uniformity and cleanliness of the grape skins. Headman of Tangguwisia, Putu Ngurah Budi Utama, expected the new variety of grapes grown in the region could restore the enthusiasm of farmers to plant grapes. “Vivacity of farmers at our village has indeed faded to grow grapes, but now their vivacity is expected to grow back so that Buleleng remains to become a grape producer in Bali,” he said. The plan of Badung County to arrange the pedestrian of Taman Ayun Temple could not run smoothly. Amid the implementation, the project has kindled polemics in the community. Some items of the project such as steps and portal on the gates of the Taman Ayun Temple was rejected by society and had to be dismantled. Pedestrian arrangement actually poses a strategic plan to preserve the existence of Taman Ayun Temple having been included in the World Cultural Heritage (WCH) by the UNESCO. Since included in the WCH, the effort to beautify the area is boosted. Gradual and sustainable arrangement is started by making road arrangement in front of Taman Ayun Temple into pedestrian and then resumed with the development of entrance gates in the east and west, arrangement of landscaping garden and traders. Whether because of the banner installation getting no response, hundreds of Gulingan villagers at night on October 17 finally held a meeting with senior figure of Mengwi Palace doubling as the Regent of Badung. The residents expressed their disappointment at the existence of gate and steps. The meeting at that night finally agreed to dismantle the steps. Gde Agung was willing to dismantle the steps because the residents assured there would be no racing action in front of the Taman Ayun. The steps would be replaced with portal in the middle of the gates so the passing vehicles would only motorcycles.

LOS ANGELES — U.S. prosecutors filed a murder charge Saturday against the suspected gunman in the deadly shooting at Los Angeles International Airport, and he could face the death penalty. Paul Ciancia, 23, remained hospitalized after being shot four times and wounded in the mouth and leg by police before his arrest. The FBI said he was unresponsive and they had not been able to interview him. Friday’s attack also wounded five others, including two other federal security officers. Security officer Gerardo Hernandez was killed. Ciancia was also charged with commission of violence at an international airport. Ciancia said in a note that he wanted to kill at least one Transportation Security Administration officer and didn’t care which one, authorities said. U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said Ciancia strode into Terminal 3,
pulled an assault rifle out of his bag and fired repeatedly at point-blank range at a TSA officer who was checking IDs. After shooting the officer and going up an escalator, he turned back to see the officer move and returned to fire on him again, killing him, according to surveillance video reviewed by the FBI. Ciancia then fired on at least two other TSA employees and a civilian airline passenger, who were all wounded. Airport police eventually shot him and took him into custody. It’s not clear why Ciancia targeted the TSA, but the handwritten note found in his bag said he’d “made the conscious decision to try to kill” multiple TSA employees
and that he wanted to stir fear in them, said FBI Special Agent in Charge David L. Bowdich. The FBI said they had not found evidence of past crimes or any confrontations with the TSA. They said Ciancia had never applied for a job with TSA. The TSA planned to review its security policies in the wake of the shooting. Administrator John Pistole did not say if that meant arming officers. Terminal 3, the area where the shooting happened, reopened Saturday. Authorities believe someone dropped Ciancia off at the airport, and agents are reviewing surveillance tapes and other evidence to piece together the sequence of events. Ciancia, who was shot four times by airport police, remained hospitalized Saturday, but there was no word on his condition. He was wounded in the mouth and the leg, authorities said.
PARIS - Two French journalists killed in Mali on Saturday were “coldly assassinated” by the “terrorists” that France is fighting in the west African country, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Sunday. Radio journalists Claude Verlon and Ghislaine Dupont were abducted after interviewing a member of the MNLA Tuareg separatist group in northern Mali. Their bodies were found by a French patrol 12 km (8 miles) outside Kidal, the birthplace of a Tuareg uprising last year that plunged Mali into chaos, leading to a coup in the capital Bamako and the occupation of the northern half of the country by militants linked to al Qaeda. A French-led military intervention drove out the militants but there are still pockets of insurgents. “The assassins are those that we are fighting, the terrorist groups that refuse democracy and elections,” Fabius said, calling the killings “heinous and revolting”. “Security in the area and the surrounding areas, especially for French nationals, will be increased,” he said, after a specially convened cabinet meeting to discuss the deaths. Fabius said one of the journalists had been shot twice, and the other three times. He said French forces had tried to find the hostage takers, but to no avail.

The former National Security Agency contractor spent more than a month in the transit zone of a Moscow airport before receiving temporary asylum in Russia in August to the fury of the United States where he faces trial on charges under the Espionage Act.
Putin has said Snowden was welcome to stay in Russia as long as he did not harm US interests. Peskov said on Saturday that condition remained in place. “No one will allow him to use the territory of Russia to harm US interests.” But the spokesman also said that Snowden was free to speak to German prosecutors over their probe into claims that Washington
spied on Chancellor Angela Merkel, or even travel to Germany. “No one is keeping him here. Born in February 1970, she said the achievement was quite surprising for
her. “This was a surprise for me because before, I had a sense that it would be impossible for me to win it and I had also not participated in a competition for a long time,” she said. Ina, who worked as a coach at the SEA Games 2011, won the bronze medal in the Bali championship in the U-49 female individual class. “This was my first world-level poomsae competition, so I was very happy with this
result,” she said, adding that she only had two months to prepare before participating in the competition. Talking about problems she faced before winning the bronze medal, Ina, who had participated in the 1988 Olympic Games, said her focus was once disrupted when someone passed in front of her while she was performing, but she was later able to overcome it to win the medal.

The women’s team, including Kevita Rizkia, Mutaqoh Nisa and Mutiara Habiba, were awarded the silver medal with 8.02 points, losing to the Philippines which took home the gold medal with 8.13 points. Thailand and Mexico, which scored 8.01 points and 7.94 points, respectively, received bronze medals. “I was nervous when I started the match,” Mutaqoh said. “I knew that my opponent was strong, and I felt strained,” she said. BUSINESS NEW YORK CITY - Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase said Friday they have been approached by US and foreign authorities investigating possible manipulation in the foreign exchange markets. In filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, both US banks reported having received queries on the issue, days after Barclays Bank, Deutsche Bank, UBS and Royal Bank of Scotland also acknowledged being under investigation over foreign exchange market issues. “Government agencies in the US and other jurisdictions are conducting investigations or making inquiries regarding trading on the foreign exchange markets,” Citi said. “Citigroup has received requests for information and is cooperating with the investigations and inquiries and responding to the requests.” JPMorgan said it had received information requests from “various government authorities” regarding its foreign exchange trading business. “These investigations are in the early stages and the firm is cooperating with the relevant authorities,” it said. Neither bank gave any other information on the direction of the probe. On Thursday Barclays Bank reported it had received enquiries on its foreign exchange trading covering several years through August 2013. Before that, the other banks acknowledged they had been contacted. Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority said last month that alongside several other agencies it was investigating a number of firms relating to trading on the foreign exchange market. Swiss regulators have said as well that they are investigating forex market manipulation. The banking sector has already been shaken by a rigging scandal related to the Libor, a benchmark rate for lending between banks that also determines numerous financial and interest rate contracts around the world. That scandal has already resulted in more than $3.5 billion in government settlements with financial institutions, as well as ongoing criminal prosecutions of several traders involved.

in automatic, massive cuts since March, known as sequestration. Conceived in mid-2011 during the previous debt ceiling crisis, the spending cuts were to be an unthinkable option that would force the two sides to strike a deal. But a compromise did not materialize ahead of the deadline. The result: Public spending in fiscal 2013 fell 2 percent, notably in defense and education. “The administration has been saying all along that it’s too big of a cut this year and that they were not happy about that,” Joseph Gagnon, a former Treasury official, told AFP.
Jacob Kirkegaard, a researcher at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, takes a broad view. According to him, the forced austerity cure could almost be seen as a victory for opposition Republicans who are constantly seeking a reduced role for the federal government. “In some ways you can argue that the Republicans in Congress have won the debate... they have succeeded in reducing the US federal deficit quite dramatically against the express wishes of the Obama administration,” he said in an interview.

Quimper - French riot police fired tear gas at thousands of demonstrators in north-west France on Saturday, after some protesters hurled stones and iron bars at them in a rally against a controversial green tax and layoffs. Three demonstrators were arrested while four protesters and a police officer were injured after scuffles broke out during the protest on Saturday afternoon. Protest organisers said 30,000 people, including hauliers, fishermen and food industry workers, had gathered in the town of Quimper in Brittany to demonstrate against an environmental tax on trucks and layoffs, even though the government had earlier in the week suspended the application of the so-called ecotax. Authorities estimate that 15,000 people joined in the protest. Some of the protestors pelted police with stones, iron bars and even pots of chrysanthemum, while others burned palettes. Police responded with water cannons and tear gas. The prefect of the department of Finistere, Jean-Luc Videlaine, blamed the violence on a “marginal group” of right-wing extremists, who he said were believed to be among the protesters.
Before the weekend, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault had warned against any “spiral of violence” in Brittany, after previous clashes last week during similar demonstrations. The ecotax, aimed at encouraging environmentally friendly commercial transport, imposes new levies on French and foreign vehicles transporting commercial goods weighing over 3.5 tonnes. Nearly a million Bangladeshis, Filipinos, Indians, Nepalis, Pakistanis and Yemenis, among others, have taken advantage of the threemonth amnesty -- announced on April 3 and then extended for four months -- and left the country. Another roughly four million have legalised their situation by finding employers to sponsor them, a must to reside in most Gulf monarchies. But the clock is ticking, and the Saudi labour ministry has said there will be no second chance, despite appeals from some Asian governments. “We have absolutely no intention of prolonging the amnesty,” said ministry spokesman Hattab al-Anzi. Pakistan said this week that it has been pressing for an extension of the amnesty until the end of January. Even so, its foreign ministry spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said: “We are trying our best to legalise as many Pakistanis as we can before the deadline ends.” In contrast, Indian foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin told AFP “we have not asked for extra time,” explaining Indians had been urged to “abide by the rules, and we have had quite remarkable success”. JAKARTA - After years of being overrun by a racketeering mafia, drug addicts and prostitutes, Southeast Asia’s biggest textile market is cleaning up its act in an effort to win back droves of shoppers. Spread across several blocks in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, Tanah Abang market is a colourful whirl of activity that has attracted shoppers from across the region for centuries. While glittering skyscrapers have shot up around the city centre trading hub, the market itself, which was founded in 1735 by a Dutch businessman, is a series of modest buildings in an area of traditional, red-tiled houses. Traders looking for wholesale bargains and shoppers looking for smaller items haggle at myriad stalls on several floors in the market buildings, looking for everything from raw cloth to branded goods. “There is so much variety under one roof and 20 to 30 percent cheaper than in Kuala Lumpur. And fashionable too,” said Malaysian shopper Mariam Ahmad, who makes an annual trip to the market to buy clothing ahead of the Muslim Eid holiday. But the market’s increasingly seedy
atmosphere and traffic gridlock in the area caused by illegal street stalls were putting shoppers off. Vendors estimated customer numbers had fallen around 10 percent in recent years. Bag seller Desmawita, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said that crime had been “getting out of hand”. “Two prostitutes pounced on one of my customers from Brunei while he was praying and he had to give them money before they let him go. He bought 29,000 bags from me but cancelled a five-year business deal.” Jeha, who sells traditional patterned “batik” shirts and goes by one name, added: “Even for us locals, Tanah Abang was scary. Popular Jakarta governor Joko Widodo, who took power around a year ago, decided to tackle the issue. In August, he pushed through a plan to relocate around 1,000 vendors who had been illegally hawking goods on the streets and were blamed for
many of the market’s problems. They were moved to a refurbished building in the area, joining another 15,000 vendors working legally inside the market’s original blocks. The number of public order officers, who help police in keeping the peace but come under the authority of the local government, has also been dramatically increased. “A Philippine customer was shocked when she came yesterday to see how orderly everything was. She said she would definitely return -- that’s good news for me,” headscarf seller Rinaldi said. However the change has not been without problems. Some vendors say that business has been hurt by the move from the street, where they could catch casual shoppers as they walked past. Rahmat Hidayat, who sells dresses, said he had not made a single sale since moving indoors but previously he could make $50 to $80 a day.

BNPB raises status of Mount Sinabung to alert Antara
JAKARTA - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has raised the status of Mount Sinabung in Karo District of North Sumatra to alert level. “The Head of Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center in the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Head has increased Mount Sinabung’s status from vigilant level III to alert level III,” said Head of the Information Data and Public Relation of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a press release received here, Sunday. He said the agency set the new status on Sunday morning at 03.00 am. The agency has coordinated with the Head of BNPB to prepare the emergency efforts after the previous vigilant status has been implemented since September 29, 2013. Sutopo said the agency raised the Mount Sinabung status due to the increased frequency of tremors and ash spewing in the volcano. He added Mount Sinabung was reported to have erupted on Sunday at 01:26 am by spewing volcanic dust reaching a height up to 7,000 meters toward the west direction. “Besides, the Observation Post at Simpang Empat heard volcanic rumble in ten minutes. The eruption of Mount Sinabung is more frequent,” Nugroho said. Nugroho urged people who live near Sinabung Volcano to avoid activity within a radius of three kilometers from the crater. “We suggested people who live in several villages that include Sikameriah, Bekerah, Simacem and Nardinding and those within three kilometers radius or who are located in the front of the crater to flee to safer places,” he said. Previously Mount Sinabung has spewed volcanic dust on Saturday. However, the North Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) considered it did not endangered people in the area.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s trade balance unexpectedly swung back to a deficit in September, official data showed Friday, in a setback for Southeast Asia’s beleaguered top economy after recently showing signs of recovery. The news of the $657.2 million deficit followed a small surplus in August and a string of other positive indicators, including easing inflation and an uptick in the manufacturing sector. Indonesian stocks and the currency plummeted earlier this year as investors fled on fears that the US Federal Reserve was poised to bring an end to its huge stimulus programme. The economy has stabilised in recent weeks, due to the positive indicators and the Fed’s unexpected decision to keep in place its full $85 billion a month bond-buying programme. But economists said the September deficit would heap further pressure on the ailing rupiah and widen the current account deficit, which has been a key factor in the country’s economic woes. Credit Suisse said the market was expecting a trade surplus and that Friday’s data was “disappointing”, noting that the deficit “is not yet even stabilising”. “This is disappointing and obviously poses risks for the currency,” Credit Suisse economist Robert Prior-Wandesforde said in a note. Trade had plummeted to a record $2.31 billion deficit in July but the August surplus marked a strong rebound. The rupiah has been one of Asia’s worst performing currencies this year and slipped to 11,360 from 11,350 to the dollar after the trade figures were announced, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

Ferrer could be the first player to win back-to-back titles at the indoor event if he beats Djokovic, who needs to win the tournament to entertain his slim chance to reclaim the ATP top spot by the end of the year. Ferrer, who entered his match with a 4-20 win-loss record against Nadal but had won their previous encounter on hard courts, at the 2011 Australian Open, dominated from the first point to the last. Quimper - French riot police fired tear gas at thousands of demonstrators in north-west France on Saturday, after some protesters hurled stones and iron bars at them in a rally against a controversial green tax and layoffs. Three demonstrators were arrested while four protesters and a police officer were injured after scuffles broke out during the protest on Saturday afternoon. Protest organisers said 30,000 people, including hauliers, fishermen and food industry workers, had gathered in the town of Quimper in Brittany to demonstrate against an environmental tax on trucks and layoffs, even though the government had earlier in the week suspended the application of the so-called ecotax. Authorities estimate that 15,000 people joined in the protest. Some of the protestors pelted police with stones, iron bars and even pots of chrysanthemum, while others burned palettes. Police responded with water cannons and tear gas. The prefect of the department of Finistere, Jean-Luc Videlaine, blamed the violence on a “marginal group” of right-wing extremists, who he said were believed to be among the protesters.
Before the weekend, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault had warned against any “spiral of violence” in Brittany, after previous clashes last week during similar demonstrations. The ecotax, aimed at encouraging environmentally friendly commercial transport, imposes new levies on French and foreign vehicles transporting commercial goods weighing over 3.5 tonnes. It came under fire from farmers and food sector workers across the country, but especially in Brittany, where the economy is heavily dependent on agriculture. Even though the government has said the tax would not take effect on January 1 as previously planned, protest organisers say it is not enough, demanding instead a permanent suspension O n S a t u r d a y, p r o t e s t o r s marched under banners such as “Right to work”, “Bretons yes, sheep no” and “France is not a cash cow”. Riyadh - Thousands of illegal foreigners, mostly unskilled workers from Asia, are rushing to leave Saudi Arabia before an amnesty expires on Sunday as they risk being fined or even jailed. Nearly a million Bangladeshis, Filipinos, Indians, Nepalis, Pakistanis and Yemenis, among others, have taken advantage of the threemonth amnesty -- announced on April 3 and then extended for four months -- and left the country. Another roughly four million have legalised their situation by finding employers to sponsor them, a must to reside in most Gulf monarchies. But the clock is ticking, and the Saudi labour ministry has said there will be no second chance, despite appeals from some Asian governments. “We have absolutely no intention of prolonging the amnesty,” said ministry spokesman Hattab al-Anzi. Pakistan said this week that it has been pressing for an extension of the amnesty until the end of January. Even so, its foreign ministry spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said: “We are trying our best to legalise as many Pakistanis as we can before the deadline ends.” In contrast, Indian foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin told AFP “we have not asked for extra time,” explaining Indians had been urged to “abide by the rules, and we have had quite remarkable success”. He bought 29,000 bags from me but cancelled a five-year business deal.” Jeha, who sells traditional patterned “batik” shirts and goes by one name, added: “Even for us locals, Tanah Abang was scary. Popular Jakarta governor Joko Widodo, who took power around a year ago, decided to tackle the issue. In August, he pushed through a plan to relocate around 1,000 vendors who had been illegally hawking goods on the streets and were blamed for
many of the market’s problems. They were moved to a refurbished building in the area, joining another 15,000 vendors working legally inside the market’s original blocks. The number of public order officers, who help police in keeping the peace but come under the authority of the local government, has also been dramatically increased. “A Philippine customer was shocked when she came yesterday to see how orderly everything was. She said she would definitely return -- that’s good news for me,” headscarf seller Rinaldi said. However the change has not been without problems. Some vendors say that business has been hurt by the move from the street, where they could catch casual shoppers as they walked past. Rahmat Hidayat, who sells dresses, said he had not made a single sale since moving indoors but previously he could make $50 to $80 a day.

BNPB raises status of Mount Sinabung to alert Antara
JAKARTA - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has raised the status of Mount Sinabung in Karo District of North Sumatra to alert level. “The Head of Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center in the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Head has increased Mount Sinabung’s status from vigilant level III to alert level III,” said Head of the Information Data and Public Relation of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in a press release received here, Sunday. He said the agency set the new status on Sunday morning at 03.00 am. The agency has coordinated with the Head of BNPB to prepare the emergency efforts after the previous vigilant status has been implemented since September 29, 2013. Sutopo said the agency raised the Mount Sinabung status due to the increased frequency of tremors and ash spewing in the volcano. He added Mount Sinabung was reported to have erupted on Sunday at 01:26 am by spewing volcanic dust reaching a height up to 7,000 meters toward the west direction. “Besides, the Observation Post at Simpang Empat heard volcanic rumble in ten minutes. The eruption of Mount Sinabung is more frequent,” Nugroho said. Nugroho urged people who live near Sinabung Volcano to avoid activity within a radius of three kilometers from the crater. “We suggested people who live in several villages that include Sikameriah, Bekerah, Simacem and Nardinding and those within three kilometers radius or who are located in the front of the crater to flee to safer places,” he said. Previously Mount Sinabung has spewed volcanic dust on Saturday. However, the North Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) considered it did not endangered people in the area.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s trade balance unexpectedly swung back to a deficit in September, official data showed Friday, in a setback for Southeast Asia’s beleaguered top economy after recently showing signs of recovery. The news of the $657.2 million deficit followed a small surplus in August and a string of other positive indicators, including easing inflation and an uptick in the manufacturing sector. Indonesian stocks and the currency plummeted earlier this year as investors fled on fears that the US Federal Reserve was poised to bring an end to its huge stimulus programme. The economy has stabilised in recent weeks, due to the positive indicators and the Fed’s unexpected decision to keep in place its full $85 billion a month bond-buying programme. But economists said the September deficit would heap further pressure on the ailing rupiah and widen the current account deficit, which has been a key factor in the country’s economic woes. Credit Suisse said the market was expecting a trade surplus and that Friday’s data was “disappointing”, noting that the deficit “is not yet even stabilising”. “This is disappointing and obviously poses risks for the currency,” Credit Suisse economist Robert Prior-Wandesforde said in a note. Trade had plummeted to a record $2.31 billion deficit in July but the August surplus marked a strong rebound. The rupiah has been one of Asia’s worst performing currencies this year and slipped to 11,360 from 11,350 to the dollar after the trade figures were announced, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

Ina, who worked as a coach at the SEA Games 2011, won the bronze medal in the Bali championship in the U-49 female individual class. “This was my first world-level poomsae competition, so I was very happy with this
result,” she said, adding that she only had two months to prepare before participating in the competition. Talking about problems she faced before winning the bronze medal, Ina, who had participated in the 1988 Olympic Games, said her focus was once disrupted when someone passed in front of her while she was performing, but she was later able to overcome it to win the medal.

BUSINESS NEW YORK CITY - Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase said Friday they have been approached by US and foreign authorities investigating possible manipulation in the foreign exchange markets. In filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, both US banks reported having received queries on the issue, days after Barclays Bank, Deutsche Bank, UBS and Royal Bank of Scotland also acknowledged being under investigation over foreign exchange market issues. “Government agencies in the US and other jurisdictions are conducting investigations or making inquiries regarding trading on the foreign exchange markets,” Citi said. “Citigroup has received requests for information and is cooperating with the investigations and inquiries and responding to the requests.” JPMorgan said it had received information requests from “various government authorities” regarding its foreign exchange trading business. “These investigations are in the early stages and the firm is cooperating with the relevant authorities,” it said. Neither bank gave any other information on the direction of the probe. On Thursday Barclays Bank reported it had received enquiries on its foreign exchange trading covering several years through August 2013. Before that, the other banks acknowledged they had been contacted. Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority said last month that alongside several other agencies it was investigating a number of firms relating to trading on the foreign exchange market. Swiss regulators have said as well that they are investigating forex market manipulation. The banking sector has already been shaken by a rigging scandal related to the Libor, a benchmark rate for lending between banks that also determines numerous financial and interest rate contracts around the world. That scandal has already resulted in more than $3.5 billion in government settlements with financial institutions, as well as ongoing criminal prosecutions of several traders involved.

Restore glory of Buleleng’s grape
Farmers start to grow new grape variety
BLACK grapes have become the pride of Buleleng County. Even, Buleleng County is probably the only county in Bali which has the center of grape having met the needs for grapes of other counties in Bali and Java. However since the past few years, many farmers cleared their grapevine and re-cultivated their land for planting rice. This occurred after the drop of grape price and sharp price hike of fertilizer and pesticide. In addition, the black grapes grown in Banjar, Seririt and Gerokgak subdistrict have become less competitive than imported grapes having sweeter flavor. “Although a few people consume, our grapes can actually still be sent to the wine factory. Unluckily, the price is still low so that we cannot get the return on investment,” said a farmer at Tangguwisia village, Seririt subdistrict. When many farmers cut their grapevines and converted their land into paddy fields, the acreage of paddy filed in Buleleng indeed increased. So the pride of Buleleng once becoming the barn of grapes in Bali faded. Actually, Buleleng had the potential to become the center of grape producers aside from other local fruits such as mango, mangosteen and durian. When numerous grape growers gave in, in fact a group of farmers in Buleleng remained keen to develop the grape cultivation. If the grave of old variety was no longer sold well in the market, many farmer groups were then developing a new variety of grape offering superiority in terms of shape and flavor. Farmer groups were still continuing to develop the new variety of grapes such as the Amerta Nadi in Banjar, Wilacita Karya at Kalisada village, Seririt subdistrict as well as Buana Mekar and Sari Bumi at Banyupoh village, Gerokgak. Later on, farmers at Tangguwisia village in Seririt subdistrict also began to develop a new variety of grapes believed to be able to restore the pride of Buleleng as the largest grape producer in Bali. The Head of Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said that his party continued to encourage farmers to develop a new variety of grape. Last month, four farmer groups in Banjar, Seririt and Gerokgak, were granted with red grape cutting having sweeter taste than the grapes grown previously. “The cutting of red grape poses the results of research by the Orange and Strawberry Research Institute in Malang,” he said. Each farmer group was given 250 grape cuttings to be planted in each region. Later, after the grape had developed, the other farmer groups were also expected to develop similar variety. “We believe this new variety of grape can restore the enthusiasm of farmers for growing grapes,” he said. Meanwhile, a number of farmers at Tangguwisia village started planting superior grape such as Blue Probolinggo, Red Prince (Red Probolinggo) and Black Carolina. These varieties of grape were produced by the research of Mahasaraswati University in collaboration with the Sumatra Education and Research Valley (SERV). If the cultivation of superior grape variety worked well, the grape would be able to meet the needs for grape as table wine served in five-star hotels because the quality of wine was determined by the taste, size, uniformity and cleanliness of the grape skins. Headman of Tangguwisia, Putu Ngurah Budi Utama, expected the new variety of grapes grown in the region could restore the enthusiasm of farmers to plant grapes. “Vivacity of farmers at our village has indeed faded to grow grapes, but now their vivacity is expected to grow back so that Buleleng remains to become a grape producer in Bali,” he said. Pedestrian arrangement actually poses a strategic plan to preserve the existence of Taman Ayun Temple having been included in the World Cultural Heritage (WCH) by the UNESCO. Since included in the WCH, the effort to beautify the area is boosted. Gradual and sustainable arrangement is started by making road arrangement in front of Taman Ayun Temple into pedestrian and then resumed with the development of entrance gates in the east and west, arrangement of landscaping garden and traders. Whether because of the banner installation getting no response, hundreds of Gulingan villagers at night on October 17 finally held a meeting with senior figure of Mengwi Palace doubling as the Regent of Badung. The residents expressed their disappointment at the existence of gate and steps. The meeting at that night finally agreed to dismantle the steps. Gde Agung was willing to dismantle the steps because the residents assured there would be no racing action in front of the Taman Ayun. The steps would be replaced with portal in the middle of the gates so the passing vehicles would only motorcycles.

LOS ANGELES — U.S. prosecutors filed a murder charge Saturday against the suspected gunman in the deadly shooting at Los Angeles International Airport, and he could face the death penalty. Paul Ciancia, 23, remained hospitalized after being shot four times and wounded in the mouth and leg by police before his arrest. The FBI said he was unresponsive and they had not been able to interview him. Friday’s attack also wounded five others, including two other federal security officers. Security officer Gerardo Hernandez was killed. Ciancia was also charged with commission of violence at an international airport. Ciancia said in a note that he wanted to kill at least one Transportation Security Administration officer and didn’t care which one, authorities said. U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said Ciancia strode into Terminal 3,
pulled an assault rifle out of his bag and fired repeatedly at point-blank range at a TSA officer who was checking IDs. After shooting the officer and going up an escalator, he turned back to see the officer move and returned to fire on him again, killing him, according to surveillance video reviewed by the FBI. Ciancia then fired on at least two other TSA employees and a civilian airline passenger, who were all wounded. Airport police eventually shot him and took him into custody. It’s not clear why Ciancia targeted the TSA, but the handwritten note found in his bag said he’d “made the conscious decision to try to kill” multiple TSA employees
and that he wanted to stir fear in them, said FBI Special Agent in Charge David L. Bowdich. The FBI said they had not found evidence of past crimes or any confrontations with the TSA. They said Ciancia had never applied for a job with TSA. The TSA planned to review its security policies in the wake of the shooting. Radio journalists Claude Verlon and Ghislaine Dupont were abducted after interviewing a member of the MNLA Tuareg separatist group in northern Mali. Their bodies were found by a French patrol 12 km (8 miles) outside Kidal, the birthplace of a Tuareg uprising last year that plunged Mali into chaos, leading to a coup in the capital Bamako and the occupation of the northern half of the country by militants linked to al Qaeda. A French-led military intervention drove out the militants but there are still pockets of insurgents. “The assassins are those that we are fighting, the terrorist groups that refuse democracy and elections,” Fabius said, calling the killings “heinous and revolting”. “Security in the area and the surrounding areas, especially for French nationals, will be increased,” he said, after a specially convened cabinet meeting to discuss the deaths. HOUSTON — Thousands of people turned up Saturday for the chance to take home a piece of the iconic, but dilapidated Houston Astrodome, once dubbed the “eighth wonder of the world.” The “yard sale” and auction got under way in the morning at the Reliant Center, the convention center adjacent to the now-closed domed stadium. More than 4,000 people were inside or waiting to get in by about 10 a.m. Saturday, Reliant Park officials said, the line twisting through the center and out the door. For those looking for a cheap memento at the sale, a 12-inch by 12-inch (30-centimeter by 30-centimeter) piece of AstroTurf cost $20. It sold out before the sale ended. Seats went for $200 a pair, and after the in-person stock sold out Saturday, people could purchase seats that they can pick up in December. Larger items, including autographed lockers and dugout benches, were auctioned off. Dave Warwick bought two of the beat-up, scratched red-and-black turnstiles that once let crowds into the Astrodome for $4,100 a piece. He said they brought back fond memories of when, as a sailor from Liverpool, England, he visited friends in 1966 and saw his first baseball game. “That’s the first entrance into the Astrodome. It’s the click. I just wanted them,” said Warwick, 71, who ended up moving to Houston in 1983 and now runs a shipping agency. Opened in 1965, the Astrodome was the world’s first multipurpose domed stadium. It was home to the Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros and the National Football League’s Houston Oilers. But no professional sports team has played there since 1999 and the stadium has been closed to all events since 2009.

According to Trade Ministry’s Head of International Trade Iman Pambagyo as the host of the event, Indonesia has received confirmations from the 159 WTO member delegations and 25 observer countries. “The observers will send some 400 delegates to the meeting,” he said. Pambagyo added the organizing committee had already surveyed hotels available for all WTO delegations and observers as well as the security procedures for them. “All in all, we have organized accommodations and security for WTO delegations and observers for the event in Nusa Dua, Bali. About 80 percent had been prepared,” he said. The committee also has made preparations to anticipate the possibility of members sending more than a minister to the meeting, with regard to their accommodations and security procedures. “Japan, for an example, has confirmed to send also its agricultural minister along with the trade minister,” said Pambagyo. With regard to Indonesia, Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan will be the chair of the conference while Vice Trade Minister Bayu Krisnamukti will lead the country’s delegation. During the Ninth World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting a parliamentary conference on WTO would also be held in Bali on December 2 to 5, 2013 jointly organized by Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and European Parliament (EP).

DENPASAR - Bali’s economy is predicted to grow 6.7 percent this year driven by investment in the tourism and infrastructure sector. In the first nine months of this year investment reached Rp28.78 trillion in Bali dominated by investment in the tourism and infrastructure sectors. Investment in the tourism and infrastructure sector accounted for 60 percent of the total investment in Bali, head of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistic Gede Suarjana said. “With the new investment, Bali is set to chalk up a 6.7 percent growth in economy this year,” Gede Suarjana said here on Thursday. The investment included Rp6 trillion in foreign direct investment, Rp16.65 trillion by Indonesian private companies and Rp6.13 trillion by the government. “The investment by the government included Rp3.32 trillion in spending from the state budget and Rp719 billion spending from the provincial budget and Rp2.08 trillion spending by the district/ city administration,” Gede Suarjana said. The estimate of investment by the private sector was based on investment credit by the private sector, he added. A smaller part of the investment was used in the agricultural sector including animal husbandry and fishery, he said. Investment in the fishery sector was mainly for the provision of fishing boats, he said. He said the agricultural sector is included in the priority list for development in Bali but investors are still more interested in the tourism sector. He said it is necessary to modernize infrastructure in the agricultural sector to attract investors to the sector.

Formerly, the territory was separated from the mainland of Bali prior to the large-scale reclamation made by Bali Turtle Island Development (BTID). To reach the location, people previously only relied on sea transportation such as boat. Now, everything has changed. Hindu pilgrims coming to say prayers in the Sakenan Temple no longer needs to ride boat. They can now park in the outermost courtyard. The reclamation conducted on Serangan Island since 1996 by PT BTID has changed the behavior of a number of local societies. Many changes have occurred both positive and negative afflicting the residents of the Turtle Island. Afterward, the road access to Serangan Island with an area of 112 hectares was to increase around four times of the previous width. Now, the Serangan Island has reached 491 hectares. In other words, the acreage of sea reclaimed amounts to 379 hectares. The reclamation happens in the eastern, southwestern and northwestern coast of the island. Customary villagers of Bongan Gede, Bongan Puseh village, Tabanan, had a unique tradition in celebrating Kuningan feast day, Saturday (Nov 2). They held mesuryak namely throwing money ritual to accompany the return of ancestral soul to heaven. Unfortunately, despite being a regular activity, the ritual did not attract tourists, especially foreign tourists. Of some hamlets at Bongan Puseh village, the most festive ritual occurred at Bongan Gede hamlet. This hereditary ritual was started with worship at family shrine. Then, it was resumed by placing the oblation in front of the house compound gates. Around 10:00 p.m., the mesuryak ritual began. After delivering to the oblation, all family
members were then throwing money upwards. The rain of rupiah in various denominations has become a bone of contention for local residents. It started with the denomination of IDR 1,000 to IDR 100,000. As soon as the money was thrown, people immediately burst and scrambled. Not infrequently, they mutually interplayed. The tradition of throwing money is made in turn, from southern tip to northern boundary of the village. It was intended in order people could scramble the money fairly. They were dominated by youth. A large number of people wished to involve in the event more than 100 people. Since many people participated in the mesuryak, total money spent could reach IDR 20 million more. “It has become a ritual for generations. Each Kuningan, we
escort the ancestors back to heaven with mesuryak. In other words, because of being happy we then throw money,” said Gede Wardana, hamlet chief of Bongan Gede, Made Wardana. The money thrown symbolized the provision of the ancestors. Based on nominal capacity, the richer a family, the more money was thrown. According to Wardana, there was no official source when the mesuryak ritual began. However, the most festive tradition occurred at his hamlet. He hoped such regular tradition could be promoted into a tourist destination. “So far, there has never been a group of travelers visiting and seeing the mesuryak tradition whereas it is one of the icons of Tabanan town,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Burns, acclaimed for his documentaries on the Civil War, jazz and World War II, previewed on Saturday part of the 14-hour series that will air next year. Burns’ film explores the political and family ties between President Theodore Roosevelt and President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor. The Roosevelts lived and governed during a time of enormous change in the U.S, including the country’s emergence as a world power, the Great Depression, World War II and the civil rights struggle. Burns said the Roosevelt political legacy remains relevant now as U.S. leaders debate how big the federal government should be. All three Roosevelts backed an expanded role for the central government. The political populism of Theodore Roosevelt in the early 1900s — for example, his antimonopoly stances and efforts to improve food safety — arguably found a new expression in the politics championed by Franklin Roosevelt to alleviate the suffering inflicted by the Great Depression in the 1930s.
The film follows Eleanor Roosevelt as she emerged from her role as first lady after Roosevelt’s death and led the United Nations as it drafted an international charter of human rights. The film also shows the leaders’ flaws. Theodore Roosevelt encouraged a rebellion in Panama so the United States could secure the land needed for the Panama Canal. Franklin Roosevelt was unfaithful to Eleanor.

CMA voters. It includes a vinyl copy of Shelton’s “Based on a True Story” laid in a thin plastic rectangle. Scan a code with your cellphone, put it on the record, and a digital arm appears that allows you to “play” the music. You can move the arm back and forth, just like on a turntable. And the vinyl album can be played on a real turntable. “We just wanted to focus on the music and we knew if we did something totally revolutionary, I guess, that people would take the effort to listen to it,” Strickland said. “The hardest part is to get the CD from the package into the player to pay attention to the music, and we didn’t have an issue with this piece.” Each awards show has its own set of rules about lobbying for an artist. The CMA encourages artists and their labels to educate voters, allowing three email blasts and one mailer a year. Brandi Simms, the CMA’s director of membership and balloting, oversees the program and vets the mailers to make sure they conform to a few guidelines.

embassies or consulates in China, were reportedly used to monitor phone calls and collect data, sparking demands for an explanation from Jakarta and Beijing. The Guardian said the 2007 operation at the United Nations climate change conference was not particularly successful, with the only tangible outcome being the mobile phone number of Bali’s chief of police. “The goal of the development effort was to gain a solid understanding of the network structure should

At the time, Kevin Rudd was the country’s newly elected prime minister and he attended the summit -- his first high-profile international foray -- at the personal invitation of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Both leaders agreed then to work together to advance ties.
