BERLIN – Germany Sunday celebrated the 20th anniversary of its reunification when the capitalist West and communist East merged after decades of Cold War division that ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Several hundred thousand people were expected in the northern city of Bremen, which is hosting the celebrations this year, for street parties and events led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was brought up in East Germany. In a video podcast on the eve of the celebrations, Merkel paid tribute to East Germans for having “the courage to fight for freedom.” “At the same time, there was a
huge wave of solidarity from the people in West Germany. It is thanks to these joint efforts that we have been able to rebuild so quickly and make Germany a country that is respected in the World.” Also expected to attend the reunification celebrations were European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen. US President Barack Obama congratulated the country, praising “the courage and conviction of the German people that brought down the Berlin Wall, ending decades of painful and artificial separation.” The peaceful reunification of East and West Germany was a “historic achievement,” he said. Bali News Australian arrested with drugs in Bali Agence France Presse
DENPASAR - An Australian man was arrested Friday with 1.7 kilograms (3.4 pounds) of methamphetamine in his luggage at Bali International Airport in Indonesia, police and customs officials said. He told customs officials he had been given a bag by an Indian friend in Bangkok and had no idea it contained drugs, according to investigators. “We arrested Michael Sacatides because he was carrying 1.7 kilogrammes of methamphetamine,” customs official Bagus Endro Wibowo told AFP. The 43-year-old boxing trainer from Sydney could face the death penalty if convicted of smuggling the drugs into Indonesia.He was arrested as he passed through customs after landing on an AirAsia flight from Bangkok at 11:30 am (0430 GMT), Wibowo said. “We suspected him as he walked through the X-ray machine. The officers checked his luggage and found four plastic bags of meth,” he said. “After being interrogated he said he got the meth from an Indian national in
Bangkok.” The drugs are reportedly worth 2.8 billion rupiah (314,000 dollars) at Indonesian street prices. Sacatides was presented to reporters wearing an orange shirt emblazoned with the word “pelaku” or criminal, but was not allowed to speak directly to the media. Officials said he claimed to have come to Bali on holiday and had a return ticket to Bangkok on October 4. “He said the luggage belonged to his Indian friend in Bangkok who lent it to him and he didn’t
know about the drugs inside,” Bambang Wahyudi airport customs chief Ngurah Rai said. Three Australians are currently on death row in Bali’s Kerobokan jail for a 2005 attempt to smuggle 8.3 kilograms (18 pounds) of heroin into Australia from the tourist island. Six other members of the so-called Bali Nine gang are serving long jail sentences. Another Australian, Schapelle Corby, is serving a 20-year sentence in Bali for trafficking 4.1 kilograms of marijuana into Indonesia in 2005.

Due to the swift streams of water at the confluence of Ayung River with the waters of Padanggalak Sea, Kesiman, the abutment of Segara Campuhan Windu Temple broke down. Ironically, the abutment having broken down since two years ago has not been repaired until now. Even, at this moment the wall of gazebo and psalmodic pavilion in the temple also collapsed as eroded by sea waves, particularly during the tidal waves. Temple priest of Campuhan Windu Segara Temple, Padanggalak, Jro Mangku I Gede Alit Adnyana when met in the temple on Saturday (Oct 2) said the breakdown of pavilion’s walls in the temple took place during the full moon on Thursday (Sep 23). At that time, tidal sea water hit the foundation of pavilion lo-
cated on the edge of the Ayung River. In reality, the distance of building from the river side reached six meters. Jro Mangku said the damage to both buildings in the temple was getting faster when the abutment in the north of the temple broke down. Since there was no other barrier, the water had eroded the temple on the northern outskirts adjacent to the streams of Ayung River. “When the tide is coming in, its height reached the bottom of the building,” he said. As supporting devotee of the temple, his party expected the concerns of government to fix the broken abutment. Otherwise, his party had confidence that the building and shrines of the temple venerated by the Hindus in Bali would also be eroded. “Now, we have one gazebo and has been eroded by water,” said Jro Mangku Alit while observing the condition of the temple’s periphery.
He said the length of brokendown abutment reached 20 meters with the width of 2 to 6 meters. Under these conditions, the two buildings in the temple thronged by Hindu devotees across Bali began to be threatened. “If it is not immediately addressed, I am afraid some of these shrines will be eroded,” he said. The temple frequently used by the Hindus for melukat (purificatory rite), bayuh oton, melasti, and other purification has now been overrun by devotees. For that purpose, as supporting devotee of the temple expected the relevant institution could make improvements, especially in the northern abutment. If the abutment has been good, all buildings in the temple area are also safe from scouring of the sea water and streams of the Ayung River. (kmb12)

Trisila Bhakti II Passenger Motor Ship (KMP) last Saturday failed to dock between Ponton pier and Movile Bridge (MB) 2 pier, Gilimanuk Harbour. Luckily the ship owned by PT Trisila Latu made in 2009 was not carrying any passengers as it was going to change pier. The ship which just came from Ketapang around 11.30 am local time and have already taken out items in Ponton pier. Then the ship captain Suburhati Lase was about to move that ship to MB 2 pier which is not far. But after rope was taken off all of a sudden strong wind caused the boat to go around and going to an unwanted direction. Ship was pushed to the shallow waters
and aground. A number of the ship workers tried to take the boat out but it failed as strong winds still blew off. They then tied the end of the ship so slowly it gets off from the sands. Around half an hour the ship then landed in MB 2. Not waiting any longer, new vehicles passengers straight away went in the ship and sailed to Ketapang. Gilimanuk Harbormaster, Dewa
Nyoman Kari, confirmed the incident and clarified it happened due to the weather condition. Even ship failed landing yet it can operate straight away because there is no damage on the ship, “The ship failed landing above sands not corals, so there is no damage on the body.” Kari asked the ship captain to be aware of the never ending changing weather in Bali Strait. Banjar Meeting Area Suggested Free ABT Tax Denpasar (Bali Post) –
Under soil water (ABT) tax that has been agreed to be one of the regional rules (perda) will be sure starting from year 2011. in this perda there are some tax objects that are free from taxes such as households, praying places, also embassies. Although, Democrat Party Fraction also hoped in this rule to make banjar meeting area (balai banjar) to be free from this tax as well. This was clarified by the party’s Secretary from Denpasar House of Representatives, Ir. AA Susruta Ngurah Putra in the middle of a the house’s meeting last Friday (1/10). This suggestion was purposed to give a public facility owned by banhar is free from the ABT tax as activities in the balai banjar are loads and if it gets taxes then
it will disadvantage a well going banjar. Meanwhile, the general view of the party’s fraction stated by the speaker I Made Sukarmana, SH, asked those taxes collected to be then used for environment preservation and to develop infrastructures for water sources. So for the future the use of clean water from ABT can be lessening. Not only that, the fraction also hoped for the City Government’s seriousness to find alternative sources especially good for environment ones and won’t damage the environment surrounding it, “One of the examples are to make sea waters to become ready drink waters.” Not far from Democrat’s view, Indonesian Democratic Party of
Struggle (PDI-P) also pressured the importance of saving the environment in the spirit of this ABT rules. Although, in it’s realisation, this rule is hoped not to cause the public burden in its fee. Meanwhile, Labour Party (Golkar) Fraction, Indonesia Raya Fraction and joint fractions also accepted ABT rule to be a regional rule yet in its operation later it is hoped through a well done acknowledged especially in its fees. Customary village disputes in Bali are now popping up again in various places. Some disputes are external in nature, while others are of internal. Different efforts had been attempted by the authorities with the hopes they would not escalate. However, to what extent the awig-awig or customary village regulations can play its role in resolving the disputes? Actually, it has something to do with various primordial ties. Similarly, the kinship system in Bali practicing the concept of parasparos salunglung sabayantaka or tolerance and harmony is believed to have been able to brought peace to the island of thousand temples. Unfortunately, due to be triggered by trivial problems the harmony previously becoming the main attraction to tourists has now potentially changed into the ripples of disunity. An expert of customary law, Prof. Dr. Wayan P. Windia, regretted the conflict occurred in the customary villages lately. As a matter of fact, it would not be going to happen if each party was aware of the customary regulations making the village into a single entity. It was one of the legal instruments used to regulate the order of life in the customary village from ancient times until nowadays. Customary regulation had a strategic role in creating the peace of villages. Meanwhile, discussing about the role of customary regulation in the resolution of customary disputes means to talk about the customary village or desa pakraman because customary regulation is made to regulate the village’s life. It is hard to imagine the discussion about customary regulation can be done completely without in-depth understanding about the administrative village or desa dinas. This professor in faculty of law of Udayana University stated that customary regulation remained to keep some weaknesses. It was more focused to regulate the internal life of the customary village, especially its villagers and virtually did not touch the existence of guess and regional migrants in the customary village. If any, the regulation was so vague and usually mentioned in the form of perarem or addendum that might vary from a customary village to another. “Customary conflict is also enabled by the absence of collective awareness to behave consistently and consequently in respect to the matters related to the existence of customary regulations,” he explained. Similar views were also given by Dewa Putu Eka Wijaya Wardana. He said the current situation and condition of the society had changed completely due to the impact of globalization and the change of times. Something previously considered taboo had now become a commonplace as it was
encouraged by commercial interests. This officer of Justice and Human Rights Bureau of Bali Province declared that every single solution of dispute would always be associated with the customary regulation. The problem now, whether all customary villages had governed the settlement of disputes occurred in the customary village. Customary regulation actually had provided an indication that customary village had an obligation that should be obeyed. When the obligation was not adhered there would be an imposition of sanctions in accordance with the level of violation. What happens if the conflict involves an outside party? According to Dewa Putu Eka Wijaya Wardana, of course the solution would need the understanding of all parties. “In response to this issue, if we examine it more profoundly, the customary regulation has given a solution as mentioned in the content,” he said. If the disputes involved external party or other customary village it would require other parties to mediate. However, the mediator should be trustworthy and neutral, impartial to one of the parties getting involved in the disputes. Both parties should give full confidence to those given the trust as a mediator. Meanwhile, if it belonged to internal dispute, it could be first resolved by administrators of the customary village. Then, if both parties were unsatisfied, it could be resolved at the level of Kertha Desa or advisory council of customary village. “When the solution has been reached at the level Kertha Desa, then all parties must comply with any decision taken,” he said. Koti Cantika, an administrator of Governing Council of Bali Customary Village, stated that customary regulation should provide a space of settlement in case there were problems involving external parties of the customary village or even among the customary villages. Customary disputes occurred should be resolved by parties that really understood about religion, customs and Balinese culture as well as had honesty and impartiality. More importantly, the election of prajuru or administrators of customary village should avoid suryak siu or jumping on the bandwagon. This lecturer in Faculty of Law, Udayana University, also recommended the imposition of fine as resolution of dispute other than understanding about the substance of customary regulation. Additionally, it should not blame on the customary village with sadripu (six enemies) and sapta timira (seven forms of benightedness) concept. As a matter of fact, there was honorable objective because the settlement of any dispute did not look for lose and win, but it was a win-win solution. (sub)

Brazil to pick successor for popular president AP
SAO PAULO – Brazilians vote Sunday in national elections that could see front-running candidate Dilma Rousseff become the country’s first female president, succeeding her popular ally and mentor. Rousseff, a 62-year-old former guerrilla, represents the ruling Workers Party and is the hand-chosen successor of outgoing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who led Brazil to unparalleled economic growth and increasing political clout on the global stage. The latest polls show her with a lead of about 20 percentage points over her closest rival, Jose Serra, a 68-year-old centrist from the Brazilian Social Democracy Party who was heavily defeated by Silva in the 2002 election. The campaign has been short on substance and long on arguing about who would more efficiently continue the policies of the Silva presidency — eight years during which some 20.5 million people have been lifted from poverty. Rousseff spent Saturday at Silva’s side working crowds in the industrial city of Sao Bernardo do Campo, just outside Sao Paulo, Silva’s hometown and a Workers Party stronghold. Trying to fight any complacency among her supporters, Rousseff downplayed
her lead in the polls and testily deflected questions about where she might hold a victory party. Instead, she spoke of economic advances under Silva, who is popularly referred to as Lula. Rousseff laid claim to his legacy, saying she was the candidate to transform Brazil into an economic power that leaves nobody behind. “We are only going to do it with the path that President Lula has opened,” Rousseff said. “I do not believe in a developed nation that has a part of its population marginalized. My goal is to continue President Lula’s work at eradicating poverty.” Despite an ethics scandal that received heavy media coverage in the final weeks of the race, Rousseff’s numbers barely ticked down and polls put her on the cusp of winning an outright majority Sunday and avoiding a runoff Oct. 31. Nevertheless, Serra, who has struggled through a campaign that analysts said lacked focus and failed to resonate with many voters, expressed confidence that he would
make it to a second round for another four weeks of campaigning during which voters could examine the candidates more closely. “On Monday, it all begins again,” he said while campaigning in Sao Paulo on Saturday. “We are going to a second-round vote for the good of the country.” If the election does go to a runoff, it could be due to spoiler candidate Marina Silva, a former environment minister who is not related to the president. In recent weeks, the Green Party candidate’s standing in the polls rose from a steady 10 percent throughout the campaign to about 14 percent in the wake of the ethics scandal. WASHINGTON – The State Department plans to caution Americans traveling in Europe to be vigilant because of heightened concerns about a potential al-Qaida terrorist attack aimed at U.S. citizens and Europeans. Senior U.S. officials tell The Associated Press that the “alert” will be issued Sunday for travelers’ guidance. The alert is general in nature and will not focus on any specific country, location or tourist sites. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement has been made. The action falls short of a formal “travel warning” which could have broader implications including a stronger likelihood of canceled airline and hotel bookings. It also will not urge travelers to stay away from public places.
SINGAPORE – Kwa Geok Choo, the wife of Singapore’s founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, who described her as his “tower of strength,” and mother of the citystate’s current prime minister, died Saturday. She was 89. Kwa suffered a stroke and brain hemorrhage in 2008 and had been bedridden and unable to speak since then. Kwa “passed away peacefully at home,” the Prime Minister’s Office
said in a statement. It did not specify the cause of death. She is survived by her husband, two sons — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Lee Hsien Yang — and a daughter, neurologist Lee Wei Ling. Lee Kuan Yew, who is 87, stepped down as prime minister in 1990 but continues to wield influence in his son’s Cabinet under the title of minister mentor. He is also in frail health and was hospitalized Wednesday with a chest infection. Although sometimes criticized as
too authoritarian, Lee is credited with transforming Singapore from a sleepy port city into a gleaming regional center for commerce and a model of social order and low corruption. Born on Dec. 21, 1920, to a wellto-do family, Kwa attended Methodist Girls’ School and Raffles Institute in Singapore and England’s Cambridge University, where she studied law as a Queen’s Scholar. Kwa met fellow Cambridge student Lee in 1944 and the two married in Singapore in 1950.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Egypt unearths 3,400-year-old granite statues AP
CAIRO – Archaeologists have unearthed the upper part of a double limestone statue of a powerful pharaoh who ruled nearly 3,400 years ago, Egypt’s Ministry of Culture said Saturday. A ministry statement said the team of Egyptian archaeologists discovered the 4-foot (1.3-meter) by 3-foot (0.95-meter) statue of Amenhotep III in Kom el-Hittan, the site of the pharaoh’s mortuary temple in the southern city of Luxor. The temple is one of the largest on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor. The statue portrays Amenhotep III wearing the double crown of
Egypt, which is decorated with a uraeus, and seated on a throne next to the Theban god Amun. Amenhotep III, who was the grandfather of the famed boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun, ruled in the 14th century B.C. at the height of Egypt’s New Kingdom and presided over a vast empire stretching from Nubia in the south to Syria in the north. The pharaoh’s temple was largely destroyed, possibly by floods, and
little remains of its walls. But archaeologists have been able to unearth a wealth of artifacts and statuary in the buried ruins, including two statues of Amenhotep made of black granite found at the site in March 2009.

ACAPULCO, Mexico – Gunmen kidnapped 20 men who were traveling together in Mexico’s Pacific coast resort city of Acapulco, authorities said Saturday. A shootout between drug gangs, meanwhile, left 14 people dead in remote town in the northern state of Durango, Mexican newspapers reported. The group of men in Acapulco was visiting from the western city of Morelia and looking for a place to stay when they were abducted Thursday, said Fernando Monreal, director of state investigative police in Guerrero state, where the resort city is located. He said the kidnapping was reported by a man who had been with the group. The man told police that he and another fellow traveler had left the others to go a store and when they returned their companions were gone. Witnesses said the men — who ranged in age from 17 to 47 — were kidnapped by an armed gang that drove them away in the four cars in which the group had been traveling. Police later found the cars abandoned near the kidnapping site.

JAKARTA - Indonesian police said Sunday they were investigating along with transport officials the weekend train crash in Central Java that killed 36 people and injured dozens. “The police and the transportation safety commission are investigating if there’s human error,” national police spokesman Marwoto Soeto told AFP. “We’ll see if the fault lies with machinists behind the train controls or those in charge of setting the track routes, among other things. Investigations will take about a week,” he added. However, the chairman of the National Commission of Transportation Safety (KNKT), Tatang Kurniadi, said a “comprehensive investigation” would require three to four months to complete. “We must consider every aspect, the human factors and mechanical factors, and investigate the whole system before we can conclude whether there’s human error,” he told AFP. Police said 36 people were killed Saturday and more than 30 badly injured when a passenger train slammed into the back of another train at a station in Petarukan Pemalang, Central Java province. Officers at the scene said a train headed to Surabaya smashed into the rear carriages of a Semarang-bound locomotive waiting at the platform. National railway operator spokesman Sugeng Priyono said 36 people were injured, including five seriously. “The rescue came late today because the heavy machinery (needed for the rescue) was located far away
from the accident location,” he said. Many of the dead and injured were trapped in three carriages, which had derailed and flipped over, officials said. A man living beside the station said the noise of the collision woke him from his sleep. Then he heard people wailing. “Suddenly I heard a loud crashing and the sound of many people crying. I saw many passengers had been thrown outside the carriages,” he said. A passenger on the stationary train said he was asleep when he felt a powerful thump and fled the carriage. “It was really scary. I went outside and realised that the rear carriages had been smashed,” he said. A survivor from the other train said he was “very traumatised”. “I don’t want to ride in trains anymore,” he was quoted as saying by Detik news website. “Most of those hospitalised had light injuries. Victims will be compensated,” he said, adding that the wrecked trains had been removed from the railway tracks and that the “situation is back to normal”. Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra Island, is one of several areas of Muslim-majority Indonesia where Islamic sharia laws have been adopted. Muslims are supposed to fast from dawn to dusk during the holy month of Ramadan, which straddled August and September this year, but there are exceptions in cases such as illness or pregnancy.

DOLOK SAGALA - Indonesian police shot dead five suspected Islamist militants and arrested four others in a raid on their hideout on Sumatra island, police said Sunday. The five suspects were killed and a policeman injured in a gunbattle Saturday on an oil-palm plantation in Dolok Sagala village in North Sumatra province, provincial police chief Oegroseno told reporters. “Yesterday we found where the armed group was hiding. During the raid, they put up a fight. We fired a
warning shot but they continued to resist. Four of the suspects died during the gunbattle yesterday,” he added. “One more was killed today,” Oegroseno said. Three suspects were arrested Saturday night and one surrendered to residents Sunday, who then handed him over to the police. Police are hunting at least eight other suspects. The suspects are believed to be linked to a group suspected of killing a police officer in a spectacular bank robbery in Medan city in August to raise funds for terrorist attacks, he said.
They were also involved in an attack on a police station near Medan in which three police officers were killed, Oegroseno said. Indonesian anti-terror police last month shot dead three suspects and arrested 15 others in a series of raids in which militants used women and children as human shields. Muslim-majority Indonesia is struggling to deal with the threat of homegrown Islamist militants who oppose the country’s secular, democratic system and want to create a caliphate across much of Southeast Asia.

JAKARTA - A Sumatran tiger that mauled a farmer to death last week has died from injuries inflicted by a trap set by local villagers, an Indonesian wildlife official said Friday. The male tiger was already badly injured when it was trapped
late Thursday in Bengkalis district of Riau province, provincial conservation agency head Danis Woro said. “Its right rear leg may have been snared in a steel rope set by local villagers,” he said. “Apparently it managed to free itself from the steel wire but injured itself in the process. When we found it last night it was weak and limping.”
The big cat died on Friday before it could be brought to a veterinarian, Woro added. Villagers believed the animal was the same one that killed and partially ate an oil palm farmer on September 21. There are fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, according to environmental group WWF.

Taiwanese tourists came in fifth with 88,448, an increase of 9.94 percent compared to 80,452 a year earlier. The number of British tourists visiting Bali in the eight months of
2010 rose 6.49 percent to 62,385 from 58,560 in the same period last year, while the number of German tourists increased 7.11 percent to 54,410 from 50,800. The number of Singapore tourists rose significantly by 54.96 percent to 54,147 from 34,943. After all, the island state ranked tenth among the top ten source countries of foreign
tourists over the period. The number of Japanese tourists in the first eight months of 2010 fell 22.67 percent to 168,806 from 218,298 in the same period last year, Malaysian tourists 3.75 percent to 90,438 from 93,962, South Korean tourists 2.09 percent to 83,342 from 85.123 and French tourists 0.19 percent to 73,027 from 73,167.

It is called the Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya Temple. The temple is associated with the journey of Brahmin Keling to Bali that was eventually given the title of Dalem Sidakarya by the King of Bali, Dalem Waturenggong. In the upcoming Tumpek Landep festivity, Saturday (Oct 9), will be organized pujawali or anniversary of this temple with pulegembal oblation. This anniversary is held every six months (210 days), coinciding with the Tumpek Landep. Four years ago, right on March 4, 2006, a grandiose ritual was held in the temple consisting of Mamungkah, Ngenteg Linggih Pedudusan Agung, Ngusaba Desa and Ngusaba Nini. How is the history of Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya Temple and why must the Hindus invoke holy water for accomplishing ritual in this temple? The Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya Temple is situated at Sidakarya Village, South Denpasar Subdistrict, Denpasar City (formerly Badung Regency). In the past, the southern coastal region was called the Pandanda Nagara. According to local temple priest, Ketut Yadnya, Saturday (Oct 2), when Hindu devotees organized a Panca YajĂąa ritual, they generally invoked accomplishment holy water for their ritual in the Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya Temple. This temple has a number of shrines such as the Pemayun Agung, representation of Besakih Temple and Mount Agung, Manik Geni, Lempuyang, Pemayun Toya, representation of Batur Temple, Pemayun Cakra, representation of Batukaru Temple, Pemayun Ngurah Agung, representation of Uluwatu and appreciation to Pemayun Putra, representation of Sakenan Temple. Other than representation of sad kahyangan temple as mentioned above, it also has Parahyangan Jagatnatha as shrine to venerate the Supreme God. In addition, there is also the chamber shrine as the abode of Ida Bathara Dalem Sidakarya. With the concentration of representative shrines under sad kahyangan in this single temple and
perfected by the existence of Jagatnatha shrine, the temple was then named Mutering Jagat Dalem Sidakarya Temple. On that account, Brahmin Keling was then awarded royal title as Dalem Sidakarya. In the Sidakarya Chronicle compiled by Nyoman Kantun and Ketut Yadnya is mentioned that Brahmin Keling was the epithet of a very renowned priest having primary truth and science on the soul release. He was named Brahmin Keling because he came from Keling, East Java. Brahmin Keling was the son of Dang Hyang Kayumanis, grandson of Mpu Candra, great grandson of Mpu Bahula and great-great grandson of Mpu Beradah. Up to these days, no one knows the original name of Brahmin Keling. He was just called Brahmin Keling as he was from Keling. The Chronicle tells us that having arrived from Madura, in the coastal village in East namely at Muncar Village, Brahmin Keling met his father. His father talked a lot about Bali. At that time, Bali was led by Dalem Waturenggong whose center of his kingdom was in Gelgel. Rejang Dance is one of the sacred dances performed in relation to the organization of temple anniversary or odalan. Other than putting a basic love to their tradition, they also show devotional service or ngatur ayah through the arts. Desserts for both lunch and dinner can vary from various kinds of fruits, depending on the season, to a specially prepared dessert like pisang goreng (fried banana fritters) or tape (fermented sticky rice). Soups There are different kinds of soups: Bakso: chicken or beef broth, usually accompanied by various kinds of spices. It usually has either fish balls or meat balls. Bubur ayam (Chicken porridge): thick rice porridge with chicken pieces. Usually served with cahweh (Chinese bread). Main course Bebek betutu (Darkened duck): Sate (satay) Babi guling (Roast pork) Babi Panggang (Barbeque Pork) Desserts The primary desserts in Bali as well as in the rest of Indonsia are fruit, which is available in more varieties than you can think of. There are literally tens or even hundreds of different kinds of bananas alone, from small, pinky-sized, gold-colored bananas to a foot or foot-and-a-half, dark green ones. One favorite dessert is pisang goreng or fried banana fritter. Traditionally, my mother would make pisang goreng for afternoon snack. Strong demand from rapidlyindustrialising China for Australia’s raw materials helped it become the only advanced economy to avoid recession during the global downturn, and Emerson said the Asian giant

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is designed to create an international framework to halt the distribution of counterfeit brand goods and pirated music and film products. The 37 countries include Japan, the United States, and members of the European Union, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore, Mexico and Morocco. “Japan made the proposal to start discussions on the ACTA and has promoted the negotiations. I welcome the basic agreement very
much,” Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Akihiro Ohata said in a statement. US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said “we are on the threshold of a landmark achievement in the enforcement of intellectual property rights,” according to a statement issued in Washington. “And the international alliance we are forging with parties representing half of global trade will be critical to fighting the theft of American jobs through trademark counterfeiting and copyright piracy.” The meeting excluded China, where counterfeit products are widely produced and distributed. To make the accord effective, the participating countries are expected to call on China and other nations to join the framework. Negotiations on the accord began in 2008.

And we see around the world a possibility of the beginning of a currency war.” He said the economic policymakers
needed to get back to talking about cooperation, “discussing the value of the currencies, trying to adjust what has to be adjusted, fighting against global imbalances.” He said that if they didn’t, there would be a new crisis “of countries trying to find domestic solutions to a global problem.” In recent weeks nearly a dozen governments from Colombia to Singapore have admitted to buying up local currency in the hope of driving down the price of the currency to make exports cheaper. LOS ANGELES - James Cameron’s blockbuster “Titanic,” the second-biggest earner in film history, will be released in 3D in 2012, a year that will also see a 3D re-release of “Star Wars,” The Hollywood Reporter said Friday. The Hollywood Reporter said film studios Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment were planning on re-releasing “Titanic” in April 2012, 100 years after the mammoth passenger steamship plunged into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

CUENCA, Spain - Decades after a mechanical pine-tree digger first unearthed it, an extraordinary trove of dinosaur fossils in central Spain is revealing its secrets. When the digging machine cut a furrow to plant pines in the arid soil near the medieval town of Cuenca in the 1980s, it sliced through more than 100 million years to one of Europe’s richest seams of fossils. It was a fluke that opened the way to a series of discoveries about the creatures that walked our planet in the Cretaceous period, between 65 and 145 million years ago. The latest secret: a strange hump-backed dinosaur, fossilised after it had devoured its prey about 125 million years ago. Six metres (20 feet) long from snout to tail tip, the dinosaur had jaws and small, clawed forelimbs, a curved spine and small hump. Pepito, as the creature has been nicknamed by the team from Autonomous University of Madrid who dug it out, was a fast and powerful hunter.
And it had apparently eaten recently. The unique, nearly complete fossil contained the remnants of its prey in the abdominal cavity. Baptized Concavenator corcovatus (from “Conca”, the Latin word for Cuenca; “venator”, for hunter; and “corcovatus”, or hump-backed) the fossil this month joined the rich collection of Cuenca’s regional science museum. The number of visitors has jumped 70 percent and the number of hits on the museum Internet site has exploded since the discovery was published in Nature, said museum director Jesus Madero. Pepito “is a strange beast, a strong runner on small feet,” said palaeontologist and
co-author of the Nature article, Francisco Ortega. Its hump had never been seen before in dinosaurs, said the professor at UNED, the Spanish Open University for distance learning. Set above the hind legs area, it could have served as an energy reserve as in a dromedary, he said. It is not the first time that this fossil seam in Las Hoyas, discovered by chance, has delivered up an important part of the pre-historic history of the planet. A missing link between dinosaurs and birds, Iberomesornis, an unusual little bird with a beak and very probably teeth, was found in the same formation in the 1980s, “at a time when we were in the midst of the debate over whether birds descended from dinosaurs,” Ortega said. In fact, the area around Cuenca seems to be rich with pre-historic evidence. Not far away is a site where fossilised dinosoar eggs were unearthed.
MANILA - A museum displaying the famed shoe collection of exfirst lady Imelda Marcos has reopened in the Philippines, heralding a fightback by its beleaguered shoe industry against a flood of cheap imports. The museum is not just a showcase of the best of Imelda Marcos’s 3,000-pair collection, but also of the craftsmanship in shoemaking in the riverside eastern suburb of Marikina where the industry was born over a century ago. Footwear consultant Tessie Endriga said that Imelda Marcos failed to provide the Marikina shoe industry with much-needed infrastructure or financing when she was in power. But she did help in her own way. “She did patronise local brands. If she liked a certain style, she would buy a dozen pairs,” recalled Endriga, who has worked with the government’s Bureau of Product Standards. Marikina shoes were once famous, both locally and abroad, until low-priced footwear from countries like China and Vietnam
flooded the industry over the years, said local business leader Jose Tayawa. “You buy Marikina-made shoes and use them for five years. You buy Chinese shoes for one-fifth the price but you can only use them for a few months,” said Tayawa, the head of the Marikina Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Former shoe museum curator Dolly Borlongan conceded that most of Imelda Marcos’s shoes were imported but added that there are many Marikina shoes among them, as well as displays on Marikina’s shoe-making history. The museum was set up in 1998 as just one more way for Marikina to advertise its centurylong history of making footwear, from humble slippers to rugged work boots to high-fashion custom shoes. The town has also built the world’s largest shoes — a pair of leather men’s shoes, each as large as a van — which are still on display at a Marikina mall. Generations of Filipinos grew up wearing the local products, and Marikina-made snake-skin shoes became the toast of Fifth Avenue in the early-1980s, the city boasts on its website.

HONG KONG - Hong Kong is staging a series of auctions this month aimed at tapping mainland Chinese buyers’ growing wealth, with Sotheby’s autumn sale alone expected to rake in over 200 million US dollars. The southern Chinese city of seven million people has become the world’s third-largest auction hub after New York and London, thanks in large part to China’s growing political and economic prowess. Mainland Chinese often grab the top lots in sales of works of art, jewellery and wine, reflecting their
growing wealth and increasingly sophisticated tastes. Sotheby’s autumn sale, which revs into high gear on Monday and runs until October 8, will see 3,200 items put on the auction block, including top-end wines, a 6.4 carat pink diamond, works by contemporary Chinese painters and an 18th century Chinese imperial seal. The Qing Dynasty white jade seal is estimated to sell for as much as 30 million Hong Kong dollars (3.86 million US dollars), Sotheby’s said. Wealthy mainland buyers want to own a piece of Chinese history, partly out of national pride and also to confirm their own business success, said Kevin
Ching, chief executive of Sotheby’s in Asia. “There is a desire to hold a piece of imperial glory — that still means a lot to people on the mainland,” he told AFP. “They’re willing to pay much more for these items (than some buyers).” The fancy vivid pink diamond could sell for 55 million Hong Kong dollars, while contemporary Chinese painter Zhang Xiaogang’s “Chapter of a New Century — Birth of the People’s Republic of China II” is estimated to fetch up to 23 million Hong Kong dollars, Sotheby’s said.

MADRID - Valencia bounced back from their Champions League loss to Manchester United with a 2-1 home victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday to move four points clear at the Spanish first division summit. A third goal of the season from striker Aritz Aduriz on 10 minutes and a late strike from substitute Vicente made it 16 points from 18 for unbeaten Valencia who lead Villarreal and champions Barcelona. It is too early to know if Valencia, league champions in 2002 and 2004 under Rafael Benitez, are genuine title contenders to Real and Barca who finished 28 points ahead of third-placed Valencia last season. Barcelona host Real Mallorca on Sunday while Real Madrid, who have yet to be defeated, entertain strugglers Deportivo La Coruna on the same day looking to close a five-point gap on Valencia. Valencia fell victim to a late goal in Wednesday’s 1-0 Champions League home defeat to Manchester United but responded with a narrow win over Bilbao to continue their fine start. Aduriz linked up well with strike partner Roberto Soldado and planted a header home in the 10th minute for his third goal since joining from Real Mallorca in a fourmillion-euro summer move. Vicente added a second goal a minute into stoppage time and it proved crucial as Igor Gabilondo pulled a goal back for Bilbao in stoppage time. Earlier on loan French striker Florent Sinama Pongolle scored twice in five minutes as 10-man Real Zaragoza came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Sporting Gijon on Sat-

Zaragoza stay bottom of the table despite the point but it could have been worse having trailed 2-0 with one player less after the dismissal of former Chelsea defender Jiri Jarosik two minutes after the break. However, the hosts scored twice in five minutes to stun Gijon with former Liverpool striker Pongolle, on loan from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, scoring in the 56th minute and again in the 61st minute to change the course of the match as Zaragoza salvaged an unlikely point. “The team produced a titanic effort to level the score,” said Zaragoza coach Jose Aurelio Gay. “At the end of the match they had counter attacks but Toni Doblas (the Zaragoza goalkeeper) did really well.” Zaragoza prop up the table with no win from their first six matches while Sporting are in 15th place after squandering two points. Elsewhere Espanyol’s travel sickness struck again as the Barcelona side lost 1-0 at promoted Real Sociedad on Saturday. An 83rd minute own goal from Argentine centre-back Juan Forlin handed Sociedad victory and inflicted a

It was a special match for striker Raul Tamudo, 32, as he started against old club Espanyol — where he spent 14 successful years before joining Sociedad in the summer — for the first time before being substituted in the 67th minute. ROME - AC Milan went top of Serie A for a day at least as Andrea Pirlo scored the only goal of the game to earn a 1-0 victory at Parma on Saturday. Several teams can go back above Milan if they win on Sunday but seeing the rossoneri go top this early in the season is an ominous sign for the rest of the division. In truth the margin of victory should have been considerably wider as Milan, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in particular missed a sackful of chances. Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri was satisfied with his team’s performance, although he admitted the last few minutes were uncomfortable watching. “It’s an important win because we had several important players out. We played well in the first half and created many chances,” he said. “Apart from the last 10 minutes we controlled the second half and I think we deserved this win. “We hardly gave away any chances but in the second half our tempo dropped, we went to sleep a bit and gave up a couple of chances. “Maybe at the end we could have better managed the last five minutes.” Milan’s combative midfielder Gennaro Gattuso brushed off the significance of his team’s going top at this stage of the season. “Being at the top doesn’t mean anything. It was our first away win and this was important,” he said. “We still have to improve a lot but I think we played some good stuff at times.” The defeat left Parma hovering above the relegation zone only on goal difference but they will likely drop down into the bottom three on Sunday. Milan showed their intent from the off as Ibrahimovic got free in the box on two minutes but dragged his cross-shot wide. Parma rarely threatened but they did have a great
chance on 12 minutes as Angelo crossed for former Milan striker Hernan Crespo but he stooped so low to try to head the ball under pressure from Alessandro Nesta that he failed to get anything behind his effort. Milan were soon back on the attack as Ibrahimovic played a onetwo with Clarence Seedorf but shot straight at Antonio Mirante. The visitors had the lead on 25 minutes as Pirlo found space and crashed a stunning shot from 30 yards, that moved wickedly in the air, into the top corner. The seven-time European champions found their swagger and Ronaldinho created a pair of chances, chipping over the backline for Ibrahimovic but Mirante came out well to block his shot while Ronaldinho repeated the trick for Robinho only for his countryman’s header to lack power. Ibrahimovic then shrugged off his marker to home in one-on-one on Mirante but incredibly he shot three times straight at the goalkeeper before the ball was cleared. Full-back Luca Antonini got behind the Parma defence on the stroke of half-time from Pirlo’s pass but no-one arrived to touch home his pull-back. It was more of the same in the second period as Robinho miscued horribly when well placed and then Ronaldinho let fly from distance only for Mirante to come to the rescue again and tip the ball over the bar on 63 minutes. Parma finally threatened 12 minutes from time as Blerim Dzemaili forced a sprawling save out of Christian Abbiati with a skidding daisy-cutter. But on the counter attack Ronaldinho beat the offside trap but from the left curled his shot past the far post. Earlier in the day Udinese finally won their first game of the season at the sixth attempt as Mehdi Benatia scored deep into injury time in a 1-0 success over Cesena, although Udinese remain bottom.

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Javaris Crittenton had little chance to distinguish himself in his first two seasons in the NBA. Then he became famous last year for the wrong reason — as the “other guy” in the Gilbert Arenas gun saga. Reinstated after a lengthy suspension and healthy again following a botched ankle surgery, Crittenton is hoping to earn a roster spot with the Charlotte Bobcats and revive his career. “It’s a blessing to be out here playing,” Crittenton said. “I’m cherishing every moment of it — every moment.” Crittenton didn’t anticipate that in three years he’d go from first-round pick of the Los Angeles Lakers to scrambling to make an NBA roster with a nonguaranteed deal. It’s a combination of bad luck and poor decisions, which includes his dispute with his Washington teammate Arenas over a card game on a team flight last season. The feud escalated until both men brought guns into the Wizards locker room. Arenas, a Wizards star, got most of the attention as he prosecuted and received a 50-game suspension. Crittenton, a reserve who was out of the season with a bum ankle, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge in January and received probation. Warned by NBA commissioner David Stern not to go into specifics about the case, Crittenton chose his words carefully. Thankfully for race organisers the potential disaster was avoided and the star-studded chasing peloton continued to increase the pace and eventually pull in the tiring leaders.
The Russian, looking to bounce back after crashing out of the Pan Pacific Open last week in Tokyo in the first round to Japanese veteran Kimiko Date Krumm, used powerful groundstrokes to escape from danger in the first set. But the three-time Grand Slam winner faltered in the second set, trading three breaks of serve with Pironkova before sealing the match with a crosscourt backhand winner to end the tiebreaker. “She started swinging away, and I was a little bit late and a little bit more tentative,” Sharapova told reporters, adding that she hoped to improve her consistency and cut down on the number of unforced errors. “I think the first rounds are never quite perfect,” she said, referring also to her loss in Tokyo, which she said had deprived her of much-needed match play. “At the end of the day, I found a way to win.” Stosur, the fourth seed here, started strong but could not hold on, crashing out of the tournament in three sets to 20-year-old Latvian qualifier Anastasija Sevastova, 2-6, 7-6 (7/ 5), 7-5. Stoner wins Japan MotoGP Agence France Presse MOTEGI, Japan - Australian rider Casey Stoner won the Japanese Grand Prix Sunday, grabbing his second straight victory despite frustrating problems setting up his Ducati throughout the weekend. The 2007 world champion clocked 43min 12.266sec at the Motegi Twin Ring, 3.868sec ahead of pole-position starter Andrea Dovizioso and 5.707sec faster than reigning champion Valentino Rossi, both of Italy.

Lorenzo hits out at ‘unfair’ Rossi MOTEGI - Jorge Lorenzo believes Valentino Rossi was too aggressive towards him in their battle for the podium in the Japanese Grand Prix. The two Yamaha riders made contact twice during a fraught struggle for third place in the closing laps at Motegi. They swapped places four times before Rossi secured the final podium spot ahead of his team-mate. Lorenzo argued that Rossi risked jeopardising Yamaha’s title prospects had they come together. “This was a big battle between Valentino and I, two warriors with the killer instinct,” said the Spaniard. “I have to say that at some points I do not think he was completely fair, we were both on the limit but some of his moves were maybe a bit too much and he touched me and pushed me wide when I don’t
think it was right. “We are team-mates, I am fighting for the riders’ championship but we are both fighting for the teams’ and manufacturers’ championship as well and we have to remember this.” Wilco Zeelenberg, team manager for Lorenzo’s side of the split Yamaha operation, agreed that Rossi should have been more circumspect when racing with Lorenzo given the Spaniard’s championship position. “Of course the end of the race was exciting, but Jorge is a winner and even with the situation with the championship he was never going to give up on the final podium spot easily,” said Zeelenberg.”It was a great battle between the two strongest riders in the world but they are team-mates and Valentino took too many risks and

touched Jorge a couple of times, which should not have happened when Jorge is fighting for the championship.” In an interview with the official MotoGP website, Lorenzo added that he understood that the dice had made great entertainment for fans, but that he felt the situation was becoming unsafe. “The show is great for the business of motorcycling - people enjoy it and that’s fantastic,” he said. “But when you’re a rider, and you’re riding a MotoGP bike which does 300 km/h on the straight and in the corners 200km/h or 180 km/h, and you are feeling that the other rider is touching you, it’s not a beautiful feeling or a good emotion because you know you are putting your life at risk in this moment. “There were three or four moves I made on Valentino that I thought were correct and fair. Instead his movements were legal but a little bit on the limit from my point of view. “I think it’s the way he likes to fight. It happened with [Sete] Gibernau, then with [Casey] Stoner and now with me. Maybe in the future his rivals will get a little bit mad and will act like he usually does.” Lorenzo said he was not at his maximum pace in the Motegi race due to a handling issue and the decision to stick with Yamaha’s old spec engine and save the newer, more powerful unit for later in the season.
Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo only came fourth, after losing a nail-biting battle with Rossi in the final stages of the race. Stoner, fresh from winning the Aragon Grand Prix last month, called the victory an “upset” after his team struggled to find the best setup for his machine in “a disaster weekend”. “It’s obvious the bike really isn’t perfect for this track. And to come out and still win this was just awesome for me and for the team and for everybody,” he said. “This was one of my most memorable wins,” he said, after fending off challenges from Dovizioso, who had his first career pole start. The Honda rider lamented his accumulation of small mistakes that prevented him really threatening the Australian, but said he was happy to take second. “I wasn’t precise 100 percent,” the Italian said. “To come back on the podium was so important.” The true highlight of the race came as the two Yamaha riders staged a brilliant duel with two laps remaining.
Riding side by side, their bikes touched as they overtook each other at successive corners during the final lap. But Rossi, still suffering shoulder pains, had the final say. “It was funny,” the nine-time world champion said. “We had some overtaking. But you know, in the last lap... to take a place on the podium, you have to never give up.” Stoner’s victory, however, did not change Lorenzo’s strong position in the overall championship standings. With only four races remaining Lorenzo can secure the season title with a solid showing in the Malaysian Grand Prix next weekend if second-ranked Dani Pedrosa misses the event. Pedrosa, the only racer with a chance of overtaking Lorenzo, pulled out of Motegi after crashing during practice on Friday, when he broke a collarbone into four pieces. He immediately flew home to Spain and underwent a successful operation Saturday, but it remained unclear exactly when he would be able to return to racing, his physician said in Barcelona.
