JAKARTA - A molotov cocktail was thrown at Myanmar embassy in Indonesian capital of Jakarta in the early hours on Sunday, Jakarta police said, causing a small fire. This comes amid mounting anger in the Southeast Asian nation, home to the world’s biggest Muslim population, over violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. A police officer patrolling a street behind the embassy spotted a fire on the second floor of the building at around 0235 AM Jakarta time (GMT+7) and alerted the police officers guarding the front gate of the embassy, according to a statement by Jakarta police on Sunday. After the fire was extinguished, police found a shattered beer bottle with a wick attached to it, the statement said, adding that the unknown perpetrator is suspected to have driven away from the scene in an MPV car. Jakarta police is currently investigating the incident, said spokesman Argo Yuwono. The police is

Economic growth of Buleleng higher than national

Purity of Bali cattle must be preserved

The Regional Regulation on Bali Cattle Management whose draft being finalized by the Bali House of Representatives is expected to maintain the purity of Bali cattle considering this original germplasm of the Island of the Gods is an ancestral heritage. Formerly, the Bali cattle were domesticated bull and then cultivated by the ancestors and finally develops like the current species. “We do not want the Bali cattle are mixed up because it is the legacy of the ancestors. In terms of quality, it is excellent and having low cholesterol. Its weight is good but slightly chewy because the predecessors were probably bulls with so hard body,” said Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, recently. According to Pastika, Bali beef should be strived in order to be tender. Thus, Bali beef can be accepted by hotels and restaurants. Consequently, the delivery of Bali cattle to outside the region can be reduced while increasing its selling price in the market. Quality of beef can be enhanced by improving feed and treatment of the cattle. It includes the treatment at the time of slaughtering and distribution. “Indeed, this must be attempted so that Bali beef can be accepted by hotels and the price can be better. Now, it is cheaper than imported meat. We import 2,000 tons per year for Bali,” he explained. Pastika added that if only Bali could meet 1,000 tons of meat needs for hotels with good price, the breeders will be more prosperous. Therefore, it needs to make an effort by improving the quality of meat through increased feed and treatment of cattle in the breeding, slaughtering and distribution. At least, it can match the wagyu (Japanese beef) where the cheapest is valued at IDR 800,000 per portion of steak with a weight of only 2 ounces. “It is not as simple as what we think. The price of Bali cattle is now about IDR 10 million weighing 300 kg. If possibly, it should reach IDR

25 million, for example, because the quality is good. .It has made us really excited. In Japan, the cow weighing 300 kg is priced at IDR 100 million,” he explained. According to Pastika, some centers for cattle breeding will be developed Bali. For example, it will be developed in the areas having little paddy fields, such as Nusa Penida, Bangli, and Jembrana. In the draft of the Bali regional regulation on Bali cattle management will also be regulated about the hotel’s obligations to take advantage of Bali cattle. “Maybe it is also required the restriction of import quotas, I think it important as well,” he concluded. Chairman of the Bali Cattle Management Bill Committee, I Nyoman Parta, said that Bali cattle have a percentage of 56 percent of carcass. It is higher when compared to PO cattle only having 46-47 percent or Madura cattle having 49-50 percent. In addition, it has low fat content, highest fertility of breed (82-83 percent) as well as good adaptation to temperature and low nutritious feed. “Therefore, Bali as the home to Bali cattle must be maintained. vented,” he said. The number of cattle traded out of the island, continued Parta, has caused 17 slaughterhouses (RPH) in Bali to have not been able to perform slaughtering activities optimally. This happens because the inter-island merchants want to buy cows at a higher price when compared with the slaughterhouse. “We need to examine this together so that slaughterhouse in Bali can afford to buy at the same price and the inter-island trading should be officially prevented,” added this Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives. According to Parta, the optimum capacity of the slaughterhouse will be able to increase employment. Other than meat as the main product, it will result in side products such as cow-hide, offal, horns, and bones. These byproducts can be processed for food, board, clothing, and handicraft industries. On the other hand, there are still slaughtering houses remaining to slaughter female cow because the price is cheaper than bulls. SINGARAJA — Even though still ranked fourth in terms of highest number of poor population in Bali, the economic growth of Buleleng district is still higher than the average of national economic growth. Besides, the economic growth rate during the past five years is above the average of Bali’s economic growth. Based on the data released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), the economic growth rate during the period of 2011-2015 was 6.7 percent. This economic growth is above the average of the Bali province amounting to 6.6 percent and even above the average of national economic growth of 5.8 percent. Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, accompanied by the Head of Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) and Research and Development of Buleleng, Gede Dharmaja, when receiving the visit of Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Farmers Union (HKTI) of Buleleng, Putu Riasa, said on Thursday (Aug. 31) that based on research and internal assessment the economic growth of the region is largely donated by agriculture sector in broader sense. It is inseparable from the condition that Buleleng is rich in various agricultural commodities such as rice, fruit, coffee, cloves, cacao and other horticultural crops. Other than the level of production, the sector also absorbs labor force, so the unemployment rate drops and eventually the people’s economy grows and develops. “Based on the data obtained, indeed the observations for five years indicate that our economic growth is above Bali’s and national rate. Famed T. rex ‘Sue’ getting a makeover at Field Museum in Chicago

CHICAGO - The world’s biggest T. rex is getting ready for a cutting-edge makeover. The Field Museum in Chicago said on Wednesday it will take down and remount the 40-1/2-foot-long (12.3-meter) Tyrannosaurus nicknamed Sue, perhaps the world’s most famous dinosaur fossil, in a way that embodies the latest understanding of this ferocious Cretaceous Period predator. The big T. rex will move to a new exhibition space in the museum, while a cast of the skeleton of the largest-known dinosaur, Patagotitan mayorum, will take the spot Sue now occupies in the museum’s Stanley Field Hall. Patagotitan, a long-necked, four-legged plant-eater that was 122 feet (37.2 meters) long and weighed 70 tons, lived in Argentina 100 million years ago, more than 30 million years before T. rex stalked western North America. The biggest land animal on record, it was a member of a dinosaur group called titanosaurs. The museum next spring will unveil the fiberglass Patagotitan skeleton, which is being cast from fossils of seven Patagotitan individuals, and for two years will display some of the genuine fossils, including an 8-foot (2.4 meter) thighbone. Named for the woman who discovered the fossils in South Dakota in 1990, Sue is the largest, most complete and bestpreserved Tyrannosaurus rex ever unearthed. The museum bought the fossils at auction for $8.4 million. Sue will be taken down in February and put up again with noteworthy changes in anatomy and stance in its new exhibition hall in spring 2019, museum scientists said.

“We are making several adjustments to the skeleton to reflect new and improved knowledge,” said paleontologist Pete Makovicky, the museum’s associate curator of dinosaurs. The most striking change, Makovicky said, will be the addition of gastralia, bones resembling an additional set of ribs spanning the belly that may have provided structural support to help the dinosaur breathe. Adding these bones will illustrate just how massive Sue was and that it boasted a bulging belly, he added. The scientists concluded that the bone mounted as Sue’s wishbone was misidentified in 2000 and they will replace it with the dinosaur’s actual wishbone, or furcula, the fused collar bones typical of meat-eating dinosaurs and their evolutionary descendants the birds. They also will adjust the ribs to produce a slimmer, less barrelshaped chest, and arrange the right leg so Sue is not crouching as much. “Often when you do something as expensive as mounting a vertebrate fossil skeleton for display you only get one shot at it. I’m happy we’re going to fix and update this incredible fossil,” said paleontologist Bill Simpson, who heads the museum’s geological collections. LIFESPAN AND BITE FORCE

MANGUPURA - A few weeks ago, following an unfortunate incident involving foreign tourists acting disrespectfully in a Balinese temple, members of Bali’s House of Representatives had a meeting with the Bali chapter of the the PHDI (Hindu Darma Council of Indonesia) to discuss the possibility of creating a bylaw that would prohibit foreign tourists from entering temples in Bali. Although such a prohibition is unlikely to become a bylaw, this issue does raise some questions about what is permitted to tourists and how tourists interact with Balinese customs, traditions, social norms and religious practices. The very fact that Bali’s parliament brought up the possibility of creating such a bylaw has given rise to many discussions on this topic and has made it clear that letting foreigners know about the rules of conduct for temples would be in everyone’s benefit. Culture is made of things like art and food but at its basis culture is rooted in beliefs and ways of doing things that are taken for granted as normal by those who are members of any given culture. People not only do things differently in different places but also do these things for different reasons. Even though these reasons may not always be clear, they are socially agreed upon and allow for smooth interactions. So what happens when these two cultures meet is sometimes perplexing for both sides and sometimes downright offensive, whether intended to be or not. In the case of temple etiquette, for example, americans may find it perplexing that Balinese people are not more explicit about what is permitted or not and what is recommended or not. Likewise Balinese people may find it perplexing that foreginers so not know how to behave in this context. Nonetheless, clearly it is prefferable for all involved if foreign people know what is expected, allowed, prohibited and frowned upon, so as to avoid disruptions, annoyance and in the extreme sacrilegious behaviour. According to religious authorities, community leaders and the general public the following are considered some of the most important rules of conduct in temples and at religious ceremonies. Although there are specific prohibitions that differ from place to place and from time to time, the following apply across the board and adhering to these will allow foreigners to continue being able to experience the unique culture and religion of Bali and allow Balinese people to feel good about sharing these aspect of their lives with visitors. Attitude It is very important to have an attitude, thoughts and feelings of humility and gratitude. Humility can be confusing to many people who

may associate it with disempowerment. In this context however being humble is it not be understood as being less valuable than anyone else, but rather recognizing our place in the world and that despite whatever quality and abilities we may have, all humans are after all dependant on the bounty of nature, other humans and the grace of the life force to survive and thrive. Sacred spaces such as temples are expressly intended to remind us of this reality. Specific prohibitions Menstruating women, anyone with an open wound and anyone who is in a condition that prevents them feeling sincere humility and gratitude are prohibited from enters temples. People give different reasons for why menstruating women may not enter a temple including things like: women are most sensitive at this time and therefor more likely to be bothered by unwanted energies, women’s emotions and energy are more intense at this time and may unwittingly disrupt the intended vibration of such a place, because blood is considered to be particularly charged with life force it should therefor only be present in particular places and at particular times (temples are not one of these places), and other reasons besides. Similar reasons are given for the prohibition on entering a temple when one has an open wound. Non-Balinese people may protest these prohibitions claiming they are based on male dominated values, superstition and the like, however regardless of the reasons for this prohibition and how this prohibition may be interpreted, Balinese people as the guardians of these temples consider such behaviour to be harmful and have their own reasons so these should be respected. The reasons for not entering a temple when one’s state of mind is disturbed by extreme grief, intoxication or anything else that would not allow for sincere humility and gratitude are similar in terms of disturbing or being disturbed by others. Anyone who disagrees with these prohibitions ought to be honest about their opinion and let the caretakers of the temple know how they feel and be prepared to deal with the consequences. Even for Balinese people, when visiting temples other than their own it is not respectful to enter without asking permission from the person or people who care for it. When visiting any temple, visitors should always be accompanied by someone who understands about the particular layout and activities taking place at a given temple so as to avoid any disruptions. It is not always clear to visitors what parts of a temple are altars, shrines or other holy areas or objects,, and there are many rules of conduct regarding such things. Also, the types of things that are considered inappropriate in a particular temple, may not be clear to you and could result in unwanted repercussions. There are specific reasons for all of these prohibitions and requirements and violations mean that the care-takers of the temple have to perform special elaborate and expensive rituals to undo the de-harmonizing effects of these

violations. There are many other things that are prohibited and also simply frowned upon, the prohibitions stated above are the most common and may not be obvious to visitors. Although most people in Bali are generally quite relaxed about having their photo taken, it is not always permitted and when it it is do not get all up in people’s faces about it or get to close to holy objects or priests. Although it is not expressly prohibited, when visiting a temple it is not advised to bother people in any way including by lingering too long, as the intended activities of holy places are centred around worship. About Customary Attire Some say that the sash tied around the waist is the most important garment while others feel that the sarong is more important. It is customary to wear both. The sash serves several functions including; protecting your core from unwanted energies, preventing your own core energy from disrupting harmony, encouraging good posture which allows your body and spirit to be in optimal condition, or to put it more philosophically tying a sash around your waste reminds you that you are involved in an activity that differs from the activities of daily life. Sarongs serves a similar function but also allows the energy of the earth to be concentrated around you, encourages more gracious behaviour , shows respect for the ancestors and also it just looks good. When it comes to shirts, though a kebaya shirt is customary for women and button down for men, the important thing is that you’re shoulders be

covered and that your shirt be clean and tidy. Being well groomed is also important as a sign of honouring or respect for the people around us and to our body that we have been given and often people will wear their best jewellery for similar reasons. For men the Balinese udeng scarf is also required and serves as a symbol of having your thoughts kept in check and other things too. Women will often have a small hair ornament to serve the similar purposes. Bali is flooded with visitors every year and although this brings both financial and social benefits, it is also taking its tole on Bali’s ecosystem. The prayers and ceremonies that the Balinese perform with diligence and devotion are essentially intended to maintain the balance of this eco-system and to contribute to the harmony that supports this eco-system in ways that are beyond the scope of most people’s understanding, but which are nonetheless worthy of respect. Balinese people are generally very open about having both local and foreign tourists witness their cultural and religious activities. returning this kindness by informing yourself about what is not allowed or recommended and doing your best to avoid such behaviour is common courtesy both in the context of religious ceremonies and places and beyond. Regardless of how one may feel about different cultural norms, so long as they do not cause harm, why not try to adapt to the norms of the place we are visiting? In the worst case we will feel very uncomfortable and in the best case we may open ourselves to whole new ways of enjoying life and understanding our fellow humans, the world and even ourselves. North Korea says conducts “perfect” hydrogen bomb test

SEOUL - North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on Sunday, which it said was an advanced hydrogen bomb for a long-range missile, marking a dramatic escalation of the regime’s stand-off with the United States and its allies. The announcement from Pyongyang came a few hours after international seismic agencies detected a manmade earthquake near the North’s test site, which Japanese and South Korean officials said was around 10 times more powerful than the tremor picked up after its last nuclear test a year ago. There was no independent confirmation that the detonation, which drew swift international condemnation, was a hydrogen bomb rather than a less powerful atomic device. But Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Tokyo could not rule out the possibility that it was a hydrogen bomb. The test is a direct challenge to U.S. President

Donald Trump, who hours earlier had talked by phone with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about the “escalating” nuclear crisis in the region and has previously vowed to stop North Korea developing nuclear weapons that could threaten the United States. North Korea, which carries out its nuclear and missile programmes in defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions and sanctions, said in an announcement on state television that a hydrogen bomb test ordered by leader Kim Jong Un was a “perfect success”. The bomb was designed to be mounted on its newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the North said. The head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said the nuclear test was “an extremely regrettable act” that was “in complete disregard of the repeated demands of the international community”. French President Emmanuel Macron said the international community must react firmly to this “new provocation”, and South Korean President Moon Jaein said Seoul would push for strong steps to further isolate the North, including new UN sanctions. Japan also raised the prospect of further sanctions, saying curbs on North Korea’s oil trade would be on the table. China, North Korea’s sole major ally, said it strongly condemned the nuclear test and urged Pyongyang to stop its “wrong” actions. NAIROBI - Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Saturday the country had a problem with its judiciary, which annulled his election win of last month, “and we must fix it”. The Law Society of Kenya said in a strongly worded statement that Kenyatta, as “the head of state who under the constitution is a symbol of national unity”, should refrain from derogatory comments about the judiciary. Kenyatta, speaking a day after the Supreme Court cancelled his victory and ordered new polls within 60 days, repeated his message from Friday that he would respect its ruling. But, speaking on live television at the State House in Nairobi after meeting elected officials from his Jubilee party, he added: “Who even elected you?...We have a problem and we must fix it.” He did not elaborate. The decision to annul the election was unexpected and unprecedented in Africa where governments often hold sway over judges. The president’s latest comments mark the second time since Friday’s ruling that he has criticised the judiciary in public. On Friday, during an impromptu rally in Nairobi, he accused the court of ignoring the will of the people and dismissed the chief justice’s colleagues as “wakora”, or crooks. The lawyers’ association condemned Kenyatta’s use of the Kiswahili word, saying that the judges serving in the highest court had acted “professionally, with honour and dignity”. “They...do not deserve the disrespectful treatment they are being shown”, the statement read. The president’s appearances since the ruling suggest he intends to campaign rigorously for the re-run of the Aug.8 poll. He said via Twitter on Saturday: “For now let us meet at the ballot.” Attention now turns back to the election board. The court ruled that it had “failed, neglected or refused to conduct the presidential election in a manner consistent with the dictates of the constitution”. Raila Odinga, the veteran opposition leader whose coalition brought the petition against the election board to the Supreme Court, said on Friday that some officials from the commission should face criminal prosecution. The chairman of the election board said there would be personnel changes, but it was not clear if that would be enough for the opposition. Sweeping out the whole board would complicate efforts to hold a new poll within two months. Other than for the oblation, the flesh is also taken advantage to make food such as satay and so on. Besides, people also often use pork in various preparations. However, in reality people should not always use flesh of living animal for their oblations. Ida Bagus Alit said that poultry are usually used as an iber-iber where this animal will be released or thrown alive. After that, it will walk away shortly after it has been spinning around for three times. This procession is meant to determine the direction or point out the direction which path should be taken by the Atma in order to reach heaven. Meanwhile, I Gede Agus Budi Adnyana, added that chicken and ducks are also used in alive condition during the ceremony like dewa yadnya where the animals with other oblations are carried when surrounding shrines in a series of ceremonial procession. Additionally, each community holding this will also bring along yellow rice to be eaten by the chickens and ducks. “The duck itself functions as a controller and represents satvika (goodness, constructive, harmony) aspect, while chicken is a symbol

of creation or rajas (passion, active, confused) and the body. Meanwhile, the white and yellow rice seeds have significance of prosperity and happiness,” he said. Budi Adnyana added that in the ritual procession of pitra yadnya, there is procession known as mapurwa daksina where the animal used in the rituals will be taken to go around the ceremony location clockwise, and devotees will usually use white buffalo. Similar opinion was conveyed by I Nyoman Kunuk, the owner of the ivory cattle from Kekeran hamlet, Selanbawak, Marga, Tabanan. He said that murwa daksina ritual procession with the use of ivory cattle is commonly found in Nyekah and Ngerit procession only and not applied in other ceremonies. The process itself is done by leading the cow surround the Pradnyan pavilion for three times and should walk slowly and carefully so that the white or yellow

The large number of participants that packed the room looked entusiastic about attending the BOP. Director of Marketing, Jos Chandra Irawan, accompanied by Chief of Agency Officer, Suhendri and Agency Builder, I Dewa Putu Artawijaya, explained that this BOP was aimed at encouraging people to have life insurance and to share opportunities with people throughout Indonesia to earn unlimited income by becoming a CAR insurance agent. CAR has started to gain the interest of people in Bali, nationally and generally continues to grow, both in terms of premium income and agents. As of July 2017, they had earned IDR 1.071 trillionin premiums. The achievement exceeded their target of 112 percent, including renewals. The premiums of new businesses reached, IDR 732 billion. “We reached the target of 120 percent. Our growth from January to July 2017 reached 83 percent nationally”, he said. The achievement of premiums in Bali has reached IDR 14.5 billion. Apart from increasing amounts earned in premiums, the number of CAR agents is also increasing. Currently, CAR has 3,495 licensed agents throughout Indonesia. A total of 752 of them are active agents that produce an average of 1 policy each month. “The agents

have been licensed under certification through the Association of Indonesian Life Insurance (AAJI) in accordance with the rules set by the Financial Services Authority (OJK). So, all the sales agents are licensed”, he said. Candra explained that they had so many agents because CAR offers a different marketing concept, so the growth has surged. Along with increasing the number of agents through this BOP event, they also aim to increase the the premium achievements from new businesses from the agency distribution to IDR 650 billion. SO far the premiums have reached IDR 491 billion, so Candra is optimistic about acheivig their target. Apart from the BOP, on Sunday (Aug. 27) CAR held license testing for 293 prospective insurance agents. They hold such tests regularly because insurance agents must be licensed. “We are optimistic about achieving our target because we offer CAR’s flagship product, namely CARlink Pro”, he said firmly. As Texans return to flood-hit homes, many say ‘Our house is history’

HOUSTON - As flood waters recede from Hurricane Harvey, thousands are set to return to their homes on Sunday to survey damage from unprecedented flooding that devastated densely populated areas of Texas, as worries mount about health risks. Harvey, which came ashore on Aug. 25 as the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in 50 years, is expected to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history, having displaced more than 1 million people and leaving wreckage in an area stretching for more than 300 miles (480 kms) which officials said would take years to repair. Thirteen Superfund sites, heavily contaminated former industrial zones, in Texas were flooded or damaged by Hurricane Harvey, but the full impact on surrounding areas was not immediately clear, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Saturday. Largest wildfire in Los Angeles history forces hundreds to evacuate

LOS ANGELES - A wildfire on the northern edge of Los Angeles rapidly grew on Saturday into what the mayor called the largest blaze in the city’s history, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of people and the closure of a major highway. The 5,000-acre (2,023-hectare) La Tuna Fire, named after the canyon area where it erupted on Friday, has led authorities to evacuate more than 700 homes in a north Los Angeles neighborhood and in nearby Burbank and Glendale, officials said. Authorities warned of erratic winds that could force them to widen the evacuation zone, after the fire destroyed three houses in Los Angeles on Saturday. “Other than that, no loss of any property,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a news conference. “That is a pretty amazing thing.” The fire was only 10 percent contained with more than 500 firefighters battling it. The blaze in thick brush that has not burned in decades was slowly creeping down a rugged hillside on Saturday toward houses, with temperatures in the area approaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), the Los Angeles Fire Department said in an alert. “This fire, which broke out yesterday, we can now say is the largest fire in the history of L.A. city, in terms of its acreage,” Garcetti told reporters. On Saturday night, Garcetti declared an emergency, ordering “all available resources” deployed to protect residents and property. “This declaration also requests that the Governor declare an emergency - so that state and federal assistance can be provided to the City as quickly as possible,” Garcetti said in a statement. The fire could make air unhealthy to breathe in parts of Los Angeles, the nation’s second-largest city, and nearby suburbs, the South Coast Air Quality Management District said in an advisory. Video posted online by media showed the fire burning along the 210 Freeway when it broke out on Friday, with smoke hovering over the roadway as cars passed by flames a few dozen feet away. Officials quickly closed a stretch of the freeway. More than 400 miles (644 km) to the north, the so-called Ponderosa Fire has burned 3,880 acres, or about 1,570 hectares, and destroyed 32 homes in Butte County since it broke out on Tuesday. The army wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday that Rohingya insurgents had set fires to monasteries, images of Buddha as well as schools and houses in northern Rakhine. More than 200 buildings, including houses and shops, were destroyed across several villages, the army said. While Myanmar officials blamed the ARSA for the burning of the homes, Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh and human rights watchers say a campaign of arson and killings by the army is aimed at trying to force the minority group out. More than 11,700 “ethnic residents” had been evacuated from northern Rakhine, the government has said, referring to non-Muslims. Indonesian minister urges Myanmar to respect Rohingyas

JAKARTA - Indonesias Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin has urged the Myanmar authorities to respect the human rights of Rohingya ethnic minorities, who suffer due to the violence from the countrys military. “Myanmar must respect the human rights (of all its citizens), regardless of their ethnicity and religion. Rohingya Muslims must be protected,” the minister said in a press statement released on Saturday. The humanity tragedy has become a major cause for concern, particularly because it happened when Muslims from all over the world were performing hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, he stated. The minister asked all sides to exercise self-restraint while responding to the conflict. The Indonesian government has taken a number of proactive and productive steps to contribute to the settlement of the Rohingya issue by facilitating the creation of Indonesian Humanity Alliance for Myanmar (AKIM), which is made up of 11 mass organizations and humanitarian institutions. In addition, the Indonesian government has also urged the Myanmar government to restore security situation, refrain from the use of violence, protect the Rohingyas, and give them access to humanitarian aid, he noted. Indonesia also supported any effort to implement former UN secretary general Kofi Annans recommendation to deal with security issue in Myanmar, he noted. He remarked that Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has also contacted several parties, including UN Secretary General Antonio Guteres and her counterparts, from friendly countries. The government has also made efforts to help overcome the humanitarian crisis by cooperating with mass organizations. MANILA - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will discuss with Indonesia and Malaysia the possibility of creating a task force to combat Islamic State-inspired militancy, he said on Sunday. Duterte even expressed willingness to open the borders to Indonesian and Malaysian security forces hunting Islamist fighters. He plans to meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Malaysian Prime Minster Najib Razak on the matter. “We have agreed that we will talk, the three of us. AMLAPURA - Candi Dasa is a popular tourist focal point in East Bali. A relaxing — some would say sleepy — beach resort, with little beach due to some serious environmental errors made in its recent past. But don’t let that put you off! Candi Dasa offers excellent diving and snorkelling, interesting historical villages, some great trekking opportunities — and beautiful beaches within easy reach. A range of good accommodation across the board, most of it within earshot of the lapping waves, qualifies Candi Dasa as an excellent base for exploring East Bali. One long road edging the coast forms the main centre of Candi Dasa, with hotels oceanside and restaurants mountainside. This road forms a section of the main around-Bali route, so traffic noise can be a concern when thundering trucks roll through town. Bear this in mind when you are choosing somewhere to sleep. Rooms closer to the sea don’t have the same issue. In the centre of town, a pretty lotus-filed lagoon sits between the main temple and the sea — par-

ticularly lovely at sunrise or sunset. At the northeastern end of town, the road spurs to follow the coast as the main highway does a sharp turn continuing to Amlapura. This coastal area houses most of the local inhabitants of Candi Dasa, and a growing number of hotels — it’s a quieter option than the main road. The villages along the coast to the west of Candi Dasa are much sleepier, and here you’ll also find a small selection of accommodation. You won’t be in the middle of the action, but you won’t be too far away either. The beach at Candi Dasa, or lack of it, is due to a sudden boom in development in the 1980s. Whether it was unregulated, or uninformed or just plain greed, a coral reef was removed to produce lime for cement to construct hotels. It allowed the power of the Lombok strait to erode the very thing people visited Candi Dasa for: the beautiful beach. We can only hope that this is a cautionary lesson for future unplanned development. Concrete sea walls now provide protection from further erosion, and result in waters being very calm and good for snorkelling

along the wall. There are pockets of sand too, although some disappear altogether at high tide. Despite most of the beach being gone, there’s still a laidback seaside ambience, and the coastal views over Amuk Bay are scenic. Offshore you can see three small rocky islands, and further in the distance, Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, while to the southwest you can see Padang Bai. The closer islands of Gili Biaha, Gili Tepekong and Gili Mimpang are home to many varieties of large fish and sharks. Snorkelling and diving or fishing trips can easily be arranged from the fishermen on the beach or one of the many dive operators along the main road. Note that currents can be very strong around the islands, and may only be suitable for experienced snorkellers and divers. A delightful way to pass an afternoon is to arrange a sailing trip in one of the traditional jukung boats. Most have motors, and some don’t even have sails, but ask around — we were quoted 250,000 rupiah for a short trip. While much of the beach in town has washed away, an exceptional

MANILA - Manny Pacquiao has pulled out of his proposed November rematch with Jeff Horn for the WBO welterweight title because of government duties. Pacquiao, a senator in the Philippines, is unavailable for the proposed Nov. 12 bout due to the conflict, the Australian promoters of the fight announced Friday. Horn upset Pacquiao for the WBO welterweight title in a unanimous 12-round decision in Brisbane, Australia, on July 2. “On behalf of the Philippines government, he (Pacquiao) will be part of a delegation that will visit China in the middle of his proposed preparation period for the fight,” said Dean Lonergan, who is Horn’s promoter. “Pacquiao is committed to fighting again in 2018 and a rematch with Jeff Horn for the WBO world welterweight title.” The proposed rematch in Brisbane had been confirmed by both camps on Aug. 21. The fight was expected to be held at the same outdoor stadium in Brisbane where a hometown crowd of 51,000 saw Horn, a former schoolteacher, stun Pacquiao for the WBO welterweight belt. The 38-year-old Pacquiao said after the fight that he wanted a rematch. He disagreed with the judges’ decision and asked the World Boxing Organization for a review, but the WBO later endorsed the 29-year-old Horn as the winner. Jesse Vargas, an American contender and former world title holder, could possibly take Pacquiao’s place for a fight later this year against Horn, the promoters said.
