Bhutanese monk’s film to open Busan film festival Associated Press Writer

SEOUL, South Korea — A Bhutanese monk’s movie about a South Indian dance will open the Busan International Film Festival next month. Officials say it’s the first time the continent’s showcase film festival has chosen a movie from Bhutan for the red carpet event usually taken by a Chinese or Korean feature. Festival director Lee Yong-kwan said Tuesday that “Vara: A Blessing,” the dance drama about Bharatanatyam South Indian dance, will be shown Oct. 3. The movie has interesting themes the festival wants to showcase, he said. Filmmaker Khyentse Norbu is a Buddhist monk and cannot attend the glitzy showing of his third feature film because of a scheduling conflict with religious

training. The 10-day festival will end with “The Dinner,” a South Korean movie about an ordinary family’s misfortunes after screening 300 movies from 70 countries. Among them are two movies from Mongolia and many from Kazakhstan. There are three single-shot movies, while more than 50 films are being premiered at Asia’s largest film festival.

TOKYO — Leaving San Francisco, singer Chris Hart has made himself at home in “J-pop.” His album of cover versions of Japanese pop tunes is rising on the charts. And the crooner is scoring on this nation’s equivalent of “American Idol,” being billed as a genius who understands the musical soul of Japan. His success highlights a music industry that’s still booming, and increasingly eager to internationalize. It’s even ready to eclipse the U.S. music world, where CD sales have plunged with the arrival of digital technology. Hart, 29, says he is living his dream. And he doesn’t mind a bit that his fame has come so far from home. “I am a part of the J-pop world now,” he said in a recent interview, using the term for

pop music in the world’s third-biggest economy. Hart has won over Japan by focusing on adaptations of local hits such as “Home,” a 2008 ballad popularized by singer Yusaku Kiyama about the joys of becoming a father. Hart’s rendition, released as a single in May, surged to No. 13 on the Oricon music charts, Japan’s equivalent of Billboard. A month later, Hart released his first album, “Heart Song,” which reached third on Oricon. That’s saying a lot, given the size of Japan’s market. Japan’s music industry is estimated at $4.42 billion, closely trailing the U.S. at $4.48 billion, although Japan has less than half the population, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, which tracks such data.

While other countries have shifted to digital music, CDs still make up 80 percent of Japan’s music sales, according to the Recording Industry Association of Japan. Only 34 percent of music sales are CDs in the U.S., and 58 percent is digital. Recent albums from established Japanese acts such as B’z and Southern All Stars are setting off a CD revival. AKB48 and other groups featuring young women, known as “idols,” are boosting CD purchases among the younger crowd. The CDs sometimes come with concert tickets and other benefits, so some fans are buying multiple copies of the same one. “Japanese people tend to want the physical CDs or the gifts and trinkets that come as perks with many albums. Music companies are getting creative,” said Tomonobu Yonai, a spokesman for the recording industry group.

Statement of Suastika was confirmed by Satriawan. Substantially, he said, based on the four aspects consisting of the technical, environmental, socio-cultural and economic-financial aspect, the review team declared it infeasible. Affirmed, when one of the four aspects was declared not to comply with of the requirements, its general conclusion would be infeasible. “It’s firmly declared infeasible. In the terms of reference, there are three conclusions namely feasible, feasible with conditions and infeasible. We take a firm decision. If it’s indeed feasible, it must be feasible.

Otherwise, if it’s infeasible so it is infeasible,” he said. Reinforcement of decision By seeing the data gathered by the study team, said Satriawan, his party did not change any data. Green belt at Kemenuh-Sakah road section collapses

SAFEGUARDING green belt along the Kemenuh-Sakah road section in Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar, collapses. It is discernible from the ever growing number of semi-permanent buildings replacing the previously existing rice field areas. Similarly, the nursery stands are now replaced by the growth of semi-permanent buildings. Verdant atmosphere throughout the region is totally different from the condition in the 1990s. The area of Kemenuh-Sakah, Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar, was the area of paddy field then. Yellowing rice fields along the road were often perpetuated by visitors happening to pass through the Kemenuh-Sakah road section. Even, visitors often dropped in to interact with local farmers and rice harvester along the road. When entering the 2000s, the shift of green belt occurred along the road section. Originally, farmers leased their paddy field to nursery businesspeople. Along the Kemenuh-Sakah road section was turned into a place of selling ornamental plants. In the long run, such a business began to disappear and was replaced with the business of shrine making, including the other businesses such as restaurants and vehicle washing by establishing semi-permanent building.

The changes collapsing the green belt made the regulation enforcers unable to do much. The Public Order Officer (Satpol PP) of Gianyar has come down twice to check the existence of the building location. On Monday (Sep 2), the Head of Gianyar Public Order Officer, I Gde Daging, admitted that the whole region belonged to green belt. Three attendants of the Rebel’s Sport Shop respectively Lansuri, 28, Nihan, 38, and Zainal Hasan, 23, are now forced to deal with the Denpasar Metro Police. They are alleged to have molested a girl from Australia with initials GLB, 19, when she was going to shop at the store on Saturday (Aug 31). The perpetrators were wringing her breast, buttocks and genital. After the case was reported, the suspects were arrested and put into the detention cell. Chief of Criminal Detective Unit of the Denpasar Metro Police, Encep Syamsul Hayat, confirmed the incident, Monday (Sep 2). He explained the trio was arrested while waiting for further legal proceedings. For the actions of the suspects, they were charged with Article 281 of the Criminal Code on the molestation. “The case is still being investigated,”

said Encep last Monday. He explained the abuse case occurred when the victim came into the store to look around the merchandises such as glasses. The beautiful victim was politely accosted by the three suspects. When picking the goods, the culprits approached the victim while describing about the price of the goods. “They speak English,” he said. At that moment, the suspects started misbehaving. One of the glasses costing USD 30 dollars, but one of the suspects then interrupted and offered it at special price. In other words, it was USD 30 plus hugs and taking pictures together. On hearing this, the victim just smiled. Well, it was taken advantage by the suspects to do the abuse. “When taking photos, the suspects committed sexual abuse against the victim,” he explained.

While taking photos, her breasts, buttocks and even the pubic were kneaded by the suspects. At that time, the victim did not show if she had been abused by the suspects. She just smiled and left the store. Apparently, the victim’s silence was expressed by reporting the suspects. “The case was reported at that time as well. Seeing from the pictures, they (the suspects) looked stupid,” he said. After receiving the report, police immediately followed it up. Great Day in Pengalusan

The Bali Dynasty Management team visited Pengalusan recently, one of the hamlets in East Bali which the Bali Dynasty supports through the East Bali Poverty Project. The occasion was the children’s Indonesian Independence Day celebration on the 17th of August that they put on for all their families. There are fun sports activities between the different schools and each school presents a cabaret show. From Sanur, the team headed North East towards Mount Agung on a cool crisp clear day for the one and a half hour journey. “The scenery is stunning with the mighty Mount Agung dominating the landscape. The children had set up their sports and stage area at a dry river bed as they do each year. We arrived just in time for the flag raising ceremony with all the children dressed in their

pristine school uniforms standing in orderly lines saluting their flag and singing their national anthem,” expressed Bali Dynasty Management at the release that received by IBP. All very formal, but very moving. After the formalities the sports activities began with sack racing, cracker eating and a few other traditional games. Then we all moved to the stage area where we were treated to cabaret shows from the different schools. The children have really grown in both music and dance. Some of the Children’s art was also on display, some of the drawings were breathtaking, so much colour.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Japan to fund ice wall to stop reactor leaks Associated Press Writer

TOKYO — The Japanese government announced Tuesday that it will spend $470 million on a subterranean ice wall and other steps in a desperate bid to stop leaks of radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear station after repeated failures by the plant’s operator. The decision is widely seen as an attempt to show that the nuclear accident won’t be a safety concern just days before the International Olympic Committee chooses between Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid as the host of the 2020 Olympics. The Fukushima Dai-ichi plant has been leaking hundreds of tons of contaminated underground water into the sea since shortly after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami damaged the complex. Several leaks from tanks storing tainted water in recent weeks have heightened the sense of crisis that the plant’s owner, Tokyo Electric Power Co., isn’t able to contain the problem. “Instead of leaving this up to TEPCO, the government will step forward and take charge,” said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said after adopting the outline. “The world is watching if we can properly handle the contaminated water but also the entire decommissioning of the plant.”

The government plans to spend an estimated 47 billion yen ($470 million) through the end of March 2015 on two projects — 32 billion yen ($320 million) on the ice wall and 15 billion yen ($150 million) on upgraded water treatment units that is supposed to remove all radioactive elements but water-soluble tritium — according to energy agency official Tatsuya Shinkawa. The government, however, is not paying for urgently needed water tanks and other equipment that TEPCO is using to stop leaks. Shinkawa said the funding is limited to “technologically challenging projects” but the government will open to additional help when needed. The ice wall would freeze the ground to a depth of up to 30 meters (100 feet) through an electrical system of thin pipes carrying a coolant as cold as minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 Fahrenheit). LONDON — Call them ‘60s relics or hippy home accessories, lava lamps have been casting their dim but groovy light on interiors for half a century, having hit British shelves 50 years ago on Tuesday. A British company began marketing their original creation as an “exotic conversation piece” in 1963. Since then, millions of models of the much-copied invention have been sold worldwide. The design was created by British inventor Edward Craven-Walker, who was inspired by an odd-looking liquid-filled egg timer he saw in a pub in southwest Britain. The former World War II pilot then spent years transforming the concept into a home lighting accessory, having recognized the potential for such an invention during anything-goes ‘60s Britain. “Everything was getting a little bit psychedelic,” said Christine Baehr, the second of Craven-Walker’s four wives. “There was Carnaby Street and The Beatles and things launching into space and he thought it was quite funky and might be something to launch into.”

Britain’s “Love Generation” saw an affinity between the fluorescent lava flow’s unpredictable nature and the easy-going, drug-induced spirit of the decade. Craven-Walker’s first model, the Astro Lamp, also reflected the technological innovation and imagination of the time, shaped like a sci-fi rocket. Soon other models, such as the Astro Mini and the Astro Nordic, emerged from Craven-Walker’s Crestworth company, building on his original concept. Baehr recalls a memorable moment when they were told that Beatles drummer Ringo Starr had bought one of their lamps. “That was a great, ‘Ah we’ve made it,’ moment,” she said. Despite the decline of British manufacturing, with numerous wellknown brands dying or moving to countries with cheaper labor costs, lava lamp making company Mathmos has remained at their factory in southwest Britain still employing CravenWalker’s tried and tested formula. “I think it’s really special to manufacture something that’s been invented and made in Britain, in Britain for 50 years,” said Cressida Granger, who became involved with Crestworth in 1989, renamed it Mathmos in 1992

and gained sole ownership in 1999. U.S. rights to manufacture the lamps are held by Haggerty Enterprises Inc. of Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Granger went on to enjoy a second wave of success for Craven-Walker’s invention during the 1990s, as a new generation of consumers, obsessed with retro British trends, lit their rooms with ‘60s lava lamp designs. CravenWalker, whose other enthusiasms included nudism, died in 2000. Lava lamps are based on two liquids of slightly different density which will not mix. The heavier liquid sinks to the bottom, but when heated by the lamp light its density decreases and it floats to the top. His invention has had roles in music videos and on television, having originally appeared in popular British television shows during the ‘60s such as “The Prisoner” and “Doctor Who.” “I think it’s the motion within the lamp,” said Anthony Voz, a collector of Mathmos products. “The way that it flows, how it’s anti-repetitive, how it’s a mixture of light and chaos blending together. It kind of pulls people in and before you know it, you’ve spent 15 minutes looking at it.”

Traditional Hindu beliefs dictate that cremation will take the deceased to the after-life or reincarnation. Mass cremations are common in Bali, where Hindu beliefs remain strong despite the island’s transformation into a tourist mecca, and are held for poor families who cannot afford the ritual-heavy ceremonies alone.Some of the people cremated on Monday had died up to five years ago. “Cremation is an obligation for all Hindus so our spirits can be returned to nature,” said Jero Mangku Sangging, the Hindu cleric leading the ceremony. Fifteen families had paid for sarcophaguses carved in the shape of bulls -- an animal that is sacred in Hinduism -- to adorn the corpses.

His lawyers also say he meant no harm by omitting the information in the document that wealthier Argentines must file annually for tax purposes. About 20 witnesses are being asked to testify. Menem called all the charges “totally unfounded” as he left court Monday. As a senator, Menem has parliamentary immunity that can only be removed by the Senate, where he has provided a reliable vote for President Cristina Fernandez. But he dismissed the idea that she will protect him. “I don’t expect the government to support me. Justice is acting in agreement with constitutional principles,” Menem told reporters. For now, Menem remains free despite the seven-year sentence he received in June after being convicted of smuggling weapons while he was president to Croatia and Ecuador when those countries were subject to international embargos. HELSINKI - Beleaguered Finnish company Nokia announced Tuesday the sale of its mobile phone unit to Microsoft for 5.44 billion euros ($7.17 billion), bringing to an end its days as a phone maker. Nokia will grant the US software giant a 10-year non-exclusive licence to its patents and will itself focus on network infrastructure and services, which it called “the best path forward for Nokia and its shareholders.” The company also announced the immediate departure of chief executive Stephen Elop, who was hired from Microsoft in 2010 to turn the company around. He will be replaced in the interim by Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia’s chairman of the board. Nokia dominated the mobile phone market for 14 years, until it was overtaken by Samsung in 2012 as the top-selling brand, as it struggled to establish winning business models and mobile devices. Rumours of a Nokia sale have swirled in recent months. Amid increasing competition from Apple and Samsung, Nokia dramatically changed its strategy in February 2011 when Elop warned the company was “standing on a burning platform” and needed to shift course immediately.

The shake-up involved phasing out Nokia’s Symbian platform in favour of a partnership with Microsoft, introducing handsets powered by Windows Phone software.

Nokia bet its future on its new Lumia smartphones, aiming to rival Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy. But Tuesday’s announcement marks the end of Nokia’s days as an independent phone manufacturer. Some 32,000 Nokia employees are expected to transfer to Microsoft once the deal is concluded, including approximately 4,700 people in

Finland, the company said. The operations affected by the transfer generated approximately 14.9 billion euros in 2012, or almost 50 percent of Nokia’s net sales, it added. Of the total purchase price of 5.44 billion euros, 3.79 billion relates to the purchase of Nokia’s devices and services business, and 1.65 billion relates to the mutual patent agreement and future options.

Nokia will book a gain on the sale of some 3.2 billion euros, which would “clearly strengthen our financial position and it will provide a solid basis for future investment in Nokia’s continuing businesses,” Siilasmaa said. Last month, Nokia finalised the purchase of German engineering giant Siemens’ 50-percent stake in Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) for 1.7 billion euros.

He said his approach will be similar to the one that turned Amazon from an online book store in 1995 to a retail titan. “We’ve had three big ideas at Amazon that we’ve stuck with for 18 years, and they’re the reason we’re successful: Put the customer

first. Invent. And be patient,” he said, in the interview published in Tuesday’s Post. Bezos, 49, added: “If you replace ‘customer’ with ‘reader,’ that approach, that point of view, can be successful at The Post too.” Bezos spoke from Seattle on Friday, four days before he was scheduled to visit The Post for the first time since the shocking announcement of the acquisition. He is buying the paper on his own, not as part of Amazon, from The Washington Post Co. and the controlling Graham family. The sale is expected to close in October. Bezos said his major input will be his “point of view” in discussions with the paper’s leadership about how the Post should evolve.

RIO DE JANEIRO - A TAM Airlines flight hit turbulence so severe that 12 passengers and crew members on the plane from Madrid to Sao Paulo were injured and the aircraft was forced to make an unscheduled landing. The airline says in a statement that Flight 8065 had to land in the northeastern Brazilian city of Fortaleza early Monday after hitting the sudden turbulence. Passengers say the turbulence lasted only a few seconds, but it caused panic and slammed several people to the cabin’s roof. Many of them had been sleeping. TAM says two people remain hospitalized after the incident. The statement didn’t specify the injuries, but passengers told local media many people suffered cuts and a few appeared to have broken bones.

He said on Tuesday that no common perception has been reached among the ministries on this issue. The MUI has issued a religious edict against the holding of the contest in the country. “Our reference remains the MUI edict,” he said. He said the ministry of religious affairs has no authority to ban or allow it because other stakeholders also have an authority over it. When asked to confirm that the government`s stance has been divided the minister said that it has not gone thus far.

The North abruptly called off the official visit because it said the U.S. had ruined the atmosphere for talks by holding a drill over South Korea with nuclear-capable B-52 bombers. Rodman said the purpose of his visit was to display his friendship for Kim and North Korea and to “show people around the world that we as Americans can actually get along with North Korea.” Speaking to reporters in Beijing ahead of his flight to Pyongyang - his second trip to the North Rodman declined to say whether he would seek Bae’s release. MADRID - As Real Madrid’s latest world record “galactico” signing, Gareth Bale will inevitably be compared with some of the illustrious names that have pulled on the white shirt of the nine-times European champions before him. President Florentino Perez smashed the transfer record five times in his relentless pursuit of the elusive “decima”, or 10th continental crown, luring Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and now Bale to the Bernabeu. Those five players together cost the world’s richest club by income almost 400 million euros ($527.54 million), a quarter of which Real agreed to pay Tottenham Hotspur for Wales winger Bale in a deal unveiled on Sunday. Construction magnate Perez has also splurged around 215 million euros on the likes of former Brazil striker Ronaldo, David Beckham, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso, hoping they would help end a dismal run of European failure since the club’s last Champions League title in 2002. It was clear at Bale’s presentation that success in Europe remains Perez’s overriding obsession and the player himself referred to the “decima” in his first words to Real fans. “The Champions League is a massive reason for me coming here,” Bale told a later news conference. “I didn’t want to just be playing in it, I want to win it,” the 24-year-old added. “I’m sure that everyone in the club wants to win it and I definitely want to help

Zidane is now an assistant to Real coach Carlo Ancelotti and will be partly responsible for making sure Bale fulfils his potential and lives up to his price tag. If he had done nothing else but score that famous goal in Glasgow 11 years ago he would probably still be a Real legend. But during his stint in Madrid between 2001 and 2006 the club’s only other major honour was a solitary La Liga title. He netted 38 goals in 155 official games, hardly a flop but there were times when Real’s demanding supporters lost patience with him and he was barracked and whistled. is former England midfielder David Beckham, who also made the move from the Premiership to La Liga when he joined Real from Manchester United in 2003. LONDON - Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera’s proposed $47.5 million move to Manchester United turned out to be a hoax after three men attempting to broker the deal were labelled imposters, British media reported on Monday. “Reports in Spain claim three men dressed in black suits and claiming to be United “representatives” spent an hour at the La Liga offices attempting to negotiate a deal. The move collapsed at the 11th hour,” the BBC reported on the final day of the transfer window on Monday.

“Confirmation from Manchester United that three men who reportedly attempted to negotiate a deal to sign Ander Herrera were not acting on behalf of the Premier League champions and were... imposters,” the BBC report added. The Basque club last week rejected an offer which Spanish newspapers reported at $40 million from United for the 24-year-old Herrera, with the club’s president Josu Urrutia adamant the Premier League side had to meet a $47.5 million buyout clause.

LONDON — After having all summer to strengthen their squads, Arsenal and Manchester United managed to rush through just two significant signings in a $100-million spree as the transfer window was closing. Arsenal signed playmaker Mesut Ozil for a club record 50 million euros ($66 million) from Real Madrid on Monday, and United bought midfielder Marouane Fellaini from Everton for 27.5 million pounds ($43 million). The transfers pushed spending by Premier League clubs over 600 million pounds ($932 million) over the summer, a record amount on the back of new lucrative television deals. Arsenal’s recruitment of Ozil on a five-year deal was a coup, and the 24-year-old German’s arrival is an emphatic response by American owner Stan Kroenke to supporters who have demanded big spending. Fans had watched in frustration throughout the summer as north London rival Tottenham spent more than $150 million on

seven players, while Arsenal’s only permanent recruits were the free signings of Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini. But after manager Arsene Wenger missed out on Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez and Yohan Cabaye, the Gunners have pulled off the big-name signing promised in June when they said there would be an “escalation in our financial firepower.” Ozil’s fee easily outstrips Arsenal’s previous largest transfer — 15 million pounds (then $21.3 million) for Andrey Arshavin in 2009 — and the club hopes he will help to produce its first trophy since 2005. “We have signed a world-class player who is one of Europe’s brightest young talents,” chief executive Ivan Gazidis said. “Mr. Kroenke ... has always fully supported Arsène and the club in making significant investments to strengthen our squad and to bring in talented players who fit our style and ambitions.” United, though, has been frustrated in its bid to spend before transfer activity was halted until January. Moyes replaced Alex Ferguson as manager at the end of last season. Moyes turned to former club Everton, after being unable to mark the start of his reign with a marquee signing. Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas was pursued for several weeks and the champions failed in high-profile attempts Monday to bring Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao and Athletic Bilbao midfielder to Old Trafford. “When I was given the opportunity to work with (Moyes) again, I jumped at the chance,” Fellaini said. The biggest Premier League spenders of the summer were Tottenham, who splurged more than 110 million pounds ($170 million) on seven players in its bid to break back into the top four and qualify for the Champions League. The spending spree was largely funded by Gareth Bale being sold to Real Madrid for a world-record 100 million euros ($132 million). But to subsidize that signing, Madrid had to offload players, and Tottenham’s north London rival Arsenal was a beneficiary with the capture of Ozil. It was double-blow for Tottenham, having lost the derby to Arsenal on Sunday.
