DENPASAR - Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali Province recorded that during the first half of 2011 the visit of Australian tourists reached 348,489 people. Such amount increased by 25.33 percent if compared to the same period in the previous year reaching 278,049 people. Head of BPS Bali, Gede Suarsa, said in Denpasar on Tuesday (Aug 2) that Australia ranked first in the top ten countries supplying tourists to the Island of the Gods. Most of them entered Bali through the Ngurah Rai Airport. “Australian people are getting more excited to travel to Bali because they regard this region as their ‘second home’ aside from the flight mileage is not so far as well as the economy of the kangaroo country has been getting better and the security situation of Bali is getting more stable,” he said. He said the kangaroo country
was able to contribute 26.73 percent of the total foreign tourists to Bali amounting to 1.30 million people during the six month period in January-June 2011. The condition increased by 10.46 percent over the same period in the previous year that only reached 1.18 million tourists. “During the period of 2010, the Australian society visiting Bali increased by 43.67 percent or reached 641,588 tourists, compared to the previous year was recorded to reach 446,570 tourists,” he observed. Bali News Fail ATM Robbery, Malaysian Captured, Skimmer and Spy cam Found Denpasar (Bali Post) –
ATM robbery almost happened again as a spy cam and skimmer was found after a report from a resident stating a number of suspicious people were around the ATM received by Kuta Police Criminal Research. Accused Lee Y.S. (23) and witness girlfeiend Wan Y. from Malaysia who’s staying at Subak Hotel, Double Six Street, Seminyak, Kuta, Badung were then captured. Even so, according to Police there are still those who are not captured. One of them Lee’s partner, Deco also from Malaysia, managed to escape as Head of Kuta Police, APC I Gede Ganefo, explained last Tuesday (2/ 8). “Our officers are still hunting for him,” he explained. It was explained Lee was captured when about to commit crime at Mandiri Bank ATM in front of Puri Naga Hotel, Arjuna Street, Legian, Kuta, Badung. Last Wednesday around 10 pm, police received reports there are three foreigners seemed suspicious. “We followed them for the while before we captured them,” Ganefo continued. Before brought to Headquarters, Police searched on Lee and Wan for evidences which then alteko glue, small ruler, a white ATM card and skimmer were found. Then police develop further their investigation to their staying place (Subak Hotel) and found a spy cam, pin pad shield that was forcedly taken, plastic to close CCTV camera, memory card, phone card, scissors, electricity solder, duck tape and more. From the investigation, accused admitted to have just acted on one ATM and was actually just about to put on the equipments such as the skimmer on the card place and spy cam for the pin numbers. Hundred hectares of paddy fields in four subak (irrigation) at Tegallinggah Village, Karangasem, failed for harvest. No rice was produced from 90 percent of the plants caused all still green stems taken off so it can be cow’s food, resulting IDR 600 million losses. Two farmers met at subak Bale Punduk, Tegallinggah, last Tuesday (2/ 8) stated the farmers did not know what have caused it. Farmer I Gede Suta (47) explained during the first two to three weeks it seems growing well yet when there’s suppose to be filled with rice it became white like moulded and dying with no rice in it. Farmer Mangku Raka Kusuma stated the same, not only those at subak bale punduk reaching 50 hectares but also on the other four subak there is in here totalling up to hundreds of hectares could be damaged. It was said farmers have followed the suggestions of the Field Socialisation Workers (PPL)
for Agriculture in plantation and manure usage. They suspect it could be due to the year’s season. In the other hand, Head of Karangasem Agriculture, Food and Horticulture Plantation Agency, Komang Subratayasa, S.P. explained the rice plants did not fail its harvest but only got its production down due to the nature’s situation besides its way of planting including manure usage. He said he didn’t think all farmers did it as suggested by PPL where unggul paddies need complete manure products to be produced maximally. Yet, farmers tend to only use one which is urea as they tend to not have the money to buy complete manure products.Besides that, observation from Karangasem markets such as in Abang traditional market, rice price has gone higher as customers will have to pay IDR 10,000 per kg for best quality rice while IDR 8,000 per kg for C4 type causing those who are middle class seemed burdened by it. Pedestrian walkway of Gajah Mada starts to be worked on Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Having been delayed for long time, the arrangement project of Denpasar City hub in the form pedestrian walkway on Jalan Gajah Mada has now been resumed. Arrangement of the fifth phase will include the repair of Tukad Badung Bridge, sidewalks, planter, garden and store name uniformity. The arrangement will commence from the Tukad Badung Bridge until the west end of Jalan Gajah Mada. However, this project does not include the installment of paving blocks. Technical executive officer (PPTK) of the project, Putu Sukardja, when met in the office of Denpasar Mayor on Tuesday (Aug 2) said the heritage arrangement project of Denpasar City area had started to be worked on. However, the project could not be entirely accomplished because of insufficient fund. “For a while, the fifth phase includes the arrangement of sidewalks, park as well as the store name,” he said. He mentioned that installation of paving blocks would be resumed in the project of the upcoming year 2012. After the sixth phase ended, it would be continued with the arrangement of other areas downtown Denpasar such as Jalan Thamrin as well as other roads within the center of the city. “Due to restricted budget, the project is undertaken in stages,” said Sukardja who is also the Division Head of Spatial Planning in the Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) of Denpasar. Sukardja said the fifth phase project was worked on by PT Wahyu Prima with the budget of over IDR 800 million. Arrangement of this phase would end in December 2011. His party expected that after the arrangement, face of the city would be more picturesque pursuant to the existing design plan. However, during the project under progress, his party did hope the
community could understand about the impact of the project implementation. “We are asking for the awareness of the community because they will be disturbed during the project implementation,” he hoped. Sukardja admitted though the project had been delayed for long time, the increasing amount of the arrangement project fund was not too large. Additionally, provision of the funds was realized in stages, so it did not undergo any changes. “Amount of the budget in use is depending on the price set when the tender was stipulated,” he said. As known, the arrangement of road along 800 meters was begun from the intention of Denpasar Municipality to improve the existence of function, visual and physic of Jalan Gajah Mada area. Since the presence of a number of modern shopping centers within the culturebased city, Jalan Gajah Mada started to be left by consumers. Denpasar dwellers preferred shopping in malls or supermarkets to stores located along the Jalan Gajah Mada. Jalan Gajah Mada Denpasar starting to be abandoned by city dwellers got attention from Denpasar Municipality to be further arranged. Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency was assigned to arrange the area. Having been researched by a team of planning consultant the arrangement had been eventually undertaken since February 2007. Arrangement of Jalan Gajah Mada’s corridor of the first stage spent IDR 422 million of total budgets worth IDR 6.6 billion. Meanwhile, for the second stage was allocated a budget up to IDR 551 million and had been worked on since September 2007. After accomplishing the second phase, the project was continued with the arrangement of space next to the village/puseh temple of Denpasar. Price of sugar and cooking oil increases Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Entering the first week in August, the price of a number of basic needs such as sugar and cooking oil rose between IDR 200 to IDR 500 per kilogram following the surge in the price of rice. Based on observation in a number of traditional markets, the average price of commodity remained to show an increase. Mainly the price of rice tended to increase because the supply from Java was declining. Division Head of Home Trade Affairs, Bali Trade and Industry Agency, Bagus Ketut Wijaya, said on Tuesday (Aug 2) the price of nine basic needs were relatively stable, while the increase and decline only occurred to one to two other commodities such as the price of sugar from IDR 10,500 to IDR 11,000 per kilogram, or increased by IDR 500. Similarly, palm oil showed an increase as much as IDR 500 rupiah, to IDR 10,500 from the previous price at IDR 10,000. On the other hand, the price hike also happened to chicken egg namely in the price range of IDR 18.500 per kilogram and the price of kampong chicken egg was IDR 28,500 per kilogram. Previously, the price hike also occurred to super local rice of IR 64 sold around IDR 8,000 per kilogram from price range of IDR 7,800
per kilogram and the rice brought in from outside Bali like Putri Sejati was sold at IDR 8,500 from IDR 8,400 per kilogram, Putri Agung at IDR 8,000 per kilogram and Ratu at IDR 8,000 per kilogram. Bagus Wijaya said the price hike to some commodities was caused by high demand in early fasting month as well as declining supply due to inter-island trade. “People and restaurateurs need not worry if the stock of basic needs will disappear in the market because Bali Trade and Industry Agency has taken a policy to secure the basic food stock in Bali,” he said. According to him, based on experience in the previous year, in the midst of surging demand for basic food all people were still able to get their need. On that account, entering the fasting month and by
the Eid festivity this year the situation was predicted the same even though there was a price hike due to the law of business behind the high demand of community. “The hike of selling prices of some basic needs is not caused by reducing stock, but genuinely caused by the law of business to look for profits in the middle of feast situation,” he said. Meanwhile, a number of basic food traders in Badung market recognized the existence of price hike to some basic commodities. “Within the past few days, the two basic commodities such as sugar and cooking oil underwent price surge. By and large, the cooking oil will tend to continuously experience a price surge,” explained Putu Wardi, a trader in Badung market. (bit)

Shortage of elementary school teachers in Buleleng Regency seems to have not been resolved so that it kindles repeated complaints. Even, in some primary schools there are only three or four teachers. As consequence, the learning and teaching activities are unable to run properly. Head of Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa, said on Monday (Aug 1) there were 488 primary schools in Buleleng. Ideally, every primary school had ten teachers so there should be totally 4,880 primary school teachers in Buleleng. However, at the moment there were only 3,875 primary
school teachers. “On that account, the shortage is more than one thousand teachers,” he said. If the overall primary school teachers were inadequate, Suyasa said, no matter where those teachers would be moved in Buleleng they would remain inadequate. Last year, a number of civil servant teachers were recruited through a regular recruitment (CPNS). However, the number of teachers recruited apparently was not balanced with the number of teachers entering their retirement period. “The recruited teachers are fewer than the retired teachers, so the teachers in Buleleng continue to decrease,” he said. Sweden, Denmark and Norway have won world renown for efforts to build peaceful and egalitarian societies, with generous immigration programs enshrined in government policy. In Stockholm, where every subway car gets a name as if it were a child’s toy, rush-hour becomes a multiethnic, multi-faith parade. Norway, home to the Nobel
peace prize, and Sweden have been proud lands of refuge to asylum seekers from conflict zones, taking in tens of thousands of Afghans and Iraqis in recent years, as well as Somalis and people fleeing the 1990s Balkan conflicts. Overt expressions of racism are a rarely breached taboo. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Tropical Storm Emily brushed past Puerto Rico and set its sights on the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where more than 630,000 people are still without shelter after last year’s earthquake. A “steady shield of rain” should reach the island of Hispaniola shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti around noon Wednesday and the rainfall should worsen by late afternoon, said John Dlugoenski, senior meteorologist with Accuweather.com. “The biggest threat to lives is probably the flooding,” Dlugoenski said. ficials and the military in the Dominican Republic have already begun moving people out of high-risk zones ahead of the storm. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Police said a 71-year-old man had been released on bail to an unspecified date later this month after being arrested on suspicion of corruption and conspiring to intercept communications. The source said the man was Kuttner. News International, the British newspaper arm of News Corp, declined to comment. A flood of revelations in the last month has generated a furor that has shaken Rupert Murdoch’s media empire as well as Britain’s press, police and political leaders. Kuttner was responsible for authorizing payments from the paper, which was part of Murdoch’s News Corp. HARARE, Zimbabwe — Police say another 14 people have died in the second minibus crash in Zimbabwe in three days. State radio reported Wednesday that a bus burst a rear tire on Tuesday and overturned twice about 120 miles
(195 kilometers) east of Harare. Police spokesman Oliver Mandipaka said the minibus carried nine more passengers than its licensed capacity. Tuesday’s crash brings to 33 the number of passengers killed in the two bus wrecks. On Saturday, 19 people died
when a rear wheel of their 16seater bus broke off. Police reported 29 people had crammed into that vehicle. Bus accidents are common in Zimbabwe, blamed mostly on poor maintenance in the troubled economy, worn tires, speeding and overcrowding.

cal decision. Some of the anti-terror units are Combat Platoon from the army strategic reserve command (Kostrad), Bravo 90 from the airforce‘s special force (Paskhas) and Gultor from Kopassus. He said terrorist actions in Indonesia were fluctuative but based on Kopassus’ study their intensity has continued to drop from 2000 to 2008. “Perhaps only 40 percent of radical actions are left,” he said.
He said he saw TNI could play a role in the fight in view of the cases. Among activities that could be categorized as terrorist actions are bombing, hijacking, killing, ambushes, kidnapping, hostage taking, robbery and intimidation. “TNI has often been involved in dealing with hostage taking,” he said. He said TNI‘s involvement in terrorism fight is limited and must be based on Law Number 2 of 2002 on police and Law Number 15 of 2003 on terrorism. From One Green to Some other Greens Advancement of science of technology does not answer all problems encountered by human life. In agriculture, for instance, modern farmers can now have boosted the quantity of production, even in multiple amounts. On the one had, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality. Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the implementation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured up the rice production. In short term, it became an efficacious medicine to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others. Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers. Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green province and implement the integrated farming system (Simantri). Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction. Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to
change the societal behavior in managing their waste management and environment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali Organic. One of the aspects is applied in the agricultural field. Socialization has been intensified while establishing farmer groups. Through breeding local cows, for instance, farmers are expected to get maximal benefits. Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take advantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertilizers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality. As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was
channeled to rice field through the water gutter. However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand tractor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers. Simple eco-friendly pest control actually has been proposed in the palm-leaf manuscript entitled “Shri Tattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.” It has been applied by subak community in Bali from generation to generation until today. However, it seems to put more emphasis on the ritual aspect only, while herbal pesticide or other means of the oblation is only applied symbolically. For instance, bird raids are managed by offering two pieces of ketupat sidayu together with oblation and side dish of yellow dragonfly. Meanwhile, Subash Palekar from India claimed to have developed the vedic-based farming. He has initiated his ‘spiritual farming’ since 1988. In essence he said that God or nature has provided human with everything required to grow plants. Place in heavy sauce pan, add all remaining ingredients and cook over medium heat for approximately 60 minutes or until all water is evaporated and marinade changes to golden color. BUSINESS China urges US to handle debt responsibly Associated Press Writer
BEIJING — China’s central bank governor urged Washington to handle its debt responsibly, warning Wednesday that uncertainty in the market for Treasury debt might harm a global economic recovery. China is the biggest foreign owner of Treasury debt and had appealed to U.S. leaders to protect its $1.1 billion in holdings during last week’s debate over raising Washington’s borrowing limit and avoiding a possible default. In a statement, Zhou Xiaochuan welcomed the deal by American leaders to raise the limit but also called for Washington to avoid further steps that might hurt investors.
“Large fluctuations and uncertainties in this market would undermine the stability of the international financial system and hinder global recovery,” Zhou said. The central bank took the unusual step of posting his comments in both English and Chinese on its website, clearly aiming to reach a foreign audience. Treasury debt is among the most widely held assets and often is used as the benchmark for interest rates on commercial credit.
Any changes due to uncertainty about U.S. finances could have global repercussions by pushing up borrowing costs. “China hopes the U.S. administration and the Congress would take responsible policy measures to handle its debt issue in light with the interests of the whole world including those of the United States,” Zhou said. He gave no details of possible measures China wants to see. The statement came after Presi-
dent Barack Obama signed legislation Tuesday to raise Washington’s $14.3 trillion borrowing limit just hours before a midnight deadline. Beijing is believed to be diversifying its foreign currency reserves but Treasurys are expected to remain a big part of its portfolio. Few other asset markets are big enough to absorb the tens of billions of dollars China’s central bank adds to its reserves each year. Also Wednesday, a Chinese rating agency said it has downgraded Washington’s credit rating from A+ to A. The move by Dagong Global Credit Rating Co., which is littleknown abroad, is unlikely to affect
U.S. borrowing rates but reflects the pessimism Washington’s debt battle has generated worldwide. Dagong said the debt deal doesn’t change the fact that U.S. debt growth has outpaced its economy and fiscal revenue. It warned earlier of a possible downgrade if the United States didn’t show it had the ability and willingness to repay its debt. Dagong hopes to compete with global ratings agencies Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and Fitch. Moody’s Investors Service said Tuesday the United States would retain the agency’s highest AAA rating. But it put a “negative” outlook on the rating, raising the possibly of a future downgrade.

SINGAPORE - In a matter of days, investor relief that the United States avoided default has been replaced by fears Europe’s debt crisis is deepening and the world’s biggest economy may be slipping back into recession. Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers said in a Reuters column there is a one in three chance of a U.S. recession. According to number crunching by Goldman Sachs, history suggests the economy is perilously close to tipping over the edge. Signs are little better elsewhere. Italy and Spain are edging closer to the euro area debt danger zone, China’s economy is slowing and Japan is mired in recession after the March earthquake. The gloom is hitting the corporate world as analysts cut earnings forecasts globally, especially in export-led economies, and big banks have announced tens of thousands of job cuts. “The odds of the economy going back into recession are at least one in three if nothing new is done to raise demand and spur growth,” Summers said of the United States in his column. “If these judgments are close to correct, relief will soon give way to alarm about the United States’s economic and fiscal future.”
The alarm bells may already be ringing. Most worryingly for financial markets, the U.S. administration’s commitment to fiscal spending cuts could make any U.S. downturn worse. “The slide in U.S. growth expectations clearly comes with very poor timing,” said Commerzbank strategist Rainer Guntermann. The bellwether S&P 500 index dropped more than 2.5 percent on Tuesday to wipe out 2011 gains after data showed U.S. consumer spending fell in June for the first time in nearly two years. The figures underlined the frail state of the U.S. economy, which grew at less than a 1 percent annualized rate in the first half of 2011 in what Deutsche Bank describes as a growth recession, not recovery. Worryingly for investors, the S&P index crashed through its 200-day moving average, pointing to further weakness ahead. “I think the conditions have completely changed this week,” said Koichi Ono, senior strategist at Daiwa Securities Capital Markets in Tokyo. “Until last week, people have been saying the U.S. debt ceiling was the problem. Now they talk about worries about the health of the economy.” Asian shares followed suit on Wednesday, falling more than 2 percent. Worried investors returned to the safe havens they used during the U.S. debt talks, pushing gold to a fresh record
high and keeping the Swiss franc close to a record high against the dollar. Financial market pressure increased on Italy and Spain, pushing their borrowing costs to 14year highs and sparking emergency talks among EU policymakers. The economies of Spain and Italy are much bigger than Ireland, Portugal and Greece that have been bailed out so far in the euro area debt crisis. The rise in yields is the latest sign investors feel policymakers have not done enough to resolve the debt crisis. “The fear of the market is that the world is going into recession ... and in the euro zone the peripheral markets are the ones that will suffer most,” said Alessandro Giansanti, a strategist at ING Amsterdam. Views on the economic outlook were rapidly being revised, with JPMorgan cutting its forecast on 2012 U.S. growth to 1 percent and markets reflecting expectations of more than 80 basis points of rate cuts in commodity exporter Australia — 60 basis points more than a day ago. If the U.S. unemployment rate keeps rising, it would be a strong warning signal that the U.S. economy is close to another recession, Goldman Sachs says. Its examination of unemployment figures dating back to 1948 shows there is a 76 percent chance the U.S. economy is either in recession or will be within
six months when the jobless rate rises by a little over three-tenths of a percentage point over a three-month period. If data on Friday shows a jobless rate of 9.3 percent for July, and it stays at that level in August, those conditions will have been met. Friday’s report is expected to show the unemployment rate held steady in July at 9.2 percent. Carmakers such as Chrysler and General Motors Co are feeling the impact of the weak consumer spending. The U.S. market is “tougher than a cheap steak,” said Chrysler ’s head of U.S. sales, Reid Bigland. Washington’s agreement to cut future spending leaves the administration with no room to loosen its fiscal belt to support the stumbling economy, especially with the threat of a ratings downgrade. That puts more pressure on the Federal Reserve, which meets next Tuesday to review policy, to strengthen its commitment to rock-bottom interest rates or even consider a third round of quantitative easing. “It’s too soon to go to something like full scale QE3, but it’s not too soon to signal concern,” said John Richards, head of strategy at RBS Americas. Although America dominates the world economy, there are signs of a slowdown globally. The world’s manufacturing sector came close to stalling in July, expanding at its shallowest pace in two years. A purchasing managers’ index from HSBC showed China’s factory sector shrank in July, although a government measure showed it maintained weak growth. Many economists say China’s slowdown this year is modest and not a sign of an impending slump. But some say Beijing is treading a fine line between fostering growth and fighting inflation as its tightening campaign runs into its 10th month. Sensitive to the ups and downs of the global economic cycle, banks have announced close to 50,000 job cuts, starting now and continuing in coming years. HSBC and Lloyds Banking Group have announced the biggest cuts. Analysts are cutting earnings forecasts globally, with those in export-dependent economies such as Taiwan, Singapore and Australia bearing the biggest cuts. Out of 22,000 stocks tracked over the past 30 days, analysts have downgraded their earnings estimates by 0.5 percent on a mean basis. Nearly 75 percent of changes in estimates in Taiwan have been downgrades. In Australia, 65 percent were downgrades and in Switzerland it was nearly 80 percent.

Korean author debuts in English with popular novel Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — There’s a big difference between “mother” and “mom.” “Mother” is someone to be respected, perhaps held at arm’s length. But “mom” is an intimate name. It’s the woman on the floor playing with her child, wisps of hair falling around her face, instead of the woman in the starched dress sitting in the parlor. The distinction made all the difference for novelist KyungSook Shin, whose book “Please Look After Mom” has made a splash in the United States and is a best-seller in her native South Korea. On a recent day in New York, Shin discussed, through her translator, the popularity of the novel and its universal themes of mother and child, and the gradual realization that all our moms actually have a life outside the family and are women with thoughts and desires. The book centers on a modernday family coping with grief when their mother, known only as Mom, vanishes in a busy city train station. The story tracks the woman’s disappearance through the eyes of her children, her husband and, ultimately, through her own words. The first line reads: “It’s been one week since Mom went missing.” As a teenager, Shin had taken the night train to Seoul with her
mother and thought to herself that when she became a writer she would write an ode to her mom. Shin contemplated the book for years, thinking of the character as “Mother,” but was unable to set anything on the page. Then one day, the first line suddenly came to her, and the use of “mom” changed everything. “It surprised me,” she said. “Everything flowed very naturally ... as though a door had opened.” Shin is one of South Korea’s most widely read and acclaimed authors. She was honored with the Manhae Literature Prize, the Dong-in Literature Prize and the Yi Sang Literary Prize, as well as France’s Prix de l’Inapercu. She had dreamed for years of becoming a writer and published her first work of fiction in a Korean literary journal at 22. Shin grew up on a farm with many brothers and sisters. She was an avid reader, even though there weren’t many books available. “As my older brothers would borrow books and bring them into our house, I would read the books and find out about a world I didn’t know,” she said. “I would just take them away to into my space, and they would come look for me or the books.” She papered the windows of her room so that she could focus, reading entire anthologies, history books, whatever she could get her hands on. “My mother was very happy to see me read,” she said.
Winfrey will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which honors philanthropic and humanitarian contributions. The 57-year-old media mogul, who was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar for 1985’s “The Color Purple,” supports various charitable and educational causes, including her own namesake foundations and Academy for Girls in South Africa. Jones and Smith will receive honorary Oscars for their outstanding careers. Jones has appeared in more than 50 films. The 80-year-old actor — voice of Darth Vader — was nominated for an Academy Award in 1971 for “The Great White Hope.” His other credits include “Field of Dreams,” ‘’Patriot Games” and “The Hunt for Red October.” Smith was NBC’s first makeup man when he started his career in 1945. He won an Oscar in 1984 for his work on “Amadeus” and was nominated again in 1989 for “Dad.” Known as the “godfather of makeup,” he also worked on “The Godfather,” ‘’The Exorcist” and “Taxi Driver.” Smith also helped train many of today’s top movie makeup artists. Smith, Jones and Winfrey will receive their statuettes on Nov. 12 at the 3rd annual Governors Awards dinner at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center, just above the Kodak Theatre, where the Academy Awards are presented.

SANTA MONICA, California — Court records show a judge has granted Charlie Sheen’s request to dismiss a lawsuit filed against a woman who locked herself in the bathroom of an upscale New York hotel room that the actor left in tatters. Sheen claimed Capri Anderson locked herself in the bathroom of the Plaza Hotel because she had taken one of his watches valued at $165,000. His lawsuit sought reimbursement. Anderson told police the actor put his hands around her throat during the raucous evening in late October, but she managed to slip away. Sheen sued Anderson for attempted extortion in November after she recounted her version of events on “Good Morning America.” Court records show Sheen’s attorney were granted a dismissal of the case without prejudice on Friday, which means the actor could re-file.

The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) said 312.6 square kilometers (120 square miles) were destroyed in June, based on the preliminary analysis of satellite photos of the vast South American rainforest. May had seen a decrease in deforestation to 268 square kilometers (100 square miles) from 477 square kilometers (180 square miles) in April. In April, more than 400 square kilometers (150 square miles) of forests were destroyed in a single
state, Mato Grosso, which is seen as a major agricultural frontier and is used for cattle ranches and soybean farming. At the 2009 UN climate change summit in Copenhagen, Brazil committed itself to reducing Amazon deforestation by 80 percent by 2020. Brazil, the world’s fifth largest country by area, has 5.3 million square kilometers of jungle and forests — mostly in the Amazon river basin — of which only 1.7 million are under state protection. The rest
is in private hands, or its ownership is undefined. Massive deforestation has made Brazil one of the world’s top greenhouse gas emitters, and the pace of deforestation peaked in 2004 at 27,000 square kilometers (10,000 square miles) a year. By 2010, however, it had dropped to 6,500 square kilometers, thanks in part to the INPE’s RealTime Deforestation Detection System (DETER), which allows researchers to collect new satellite images on a daily basis. However, the system can only monitor areas of 25 hectares (60 acres) or more, so its results are not considered definitive.
WOMEN who have experienced rape or other abuse have far higher rates of mental disorders and are up to 20 times more likely to attempt suicide than other females, an Australian study showed Wednesday. The findings, reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, showed a very strong association between exposure to genderbased violence and mental disorder, said study leader Susan Rees. “Based on other studies, we expected there to be a correlation and an association, but the strength of it was particularly concerning,” said Rees, from the School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales. “Not only was there a higher rate (of mental disorder) but there was also a greater severity.” Researchers analysed the results of a national survey of 4,451 women aged 16 to 85 conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2007. They looked at the four more common types of abuse — physical violence by an intimate partner, rape, other sexual assault and stalking — and the rate of mental disorders such as
anxiety and depression, and substance abuse. “For women exposed to two types of gender-based violence the lifetime rate of mental disorder was 69 percent and for three or more types of gender-based violence, it was 89.4 percent,” Rees said. “This compares with a rate of 28 percent for women who have not experienced violence.” Attempted suicide figures were alarming with a 1.6 percent attempted suicide rate for women never exposed to gender-based violence rising to six percent for women who had experienced one type and 34 percent for those enduring three or four types. Rees, a senior research fellow at UNSW’s Psychiatry Research and Teaching Unit, said the analysis was the most comprehensive done in a nationally representative sample and would therefore have relevance to other countries. The data, which showed about 15 percent of Australian women had reported sexual assault of some sort and eight percent had reported being raped, was comparable with other countries, she added.

WWF said contrary to popular belief most people consider the eggs a “delicacy” and eat them for pleasure, not as a source of protein or for their reputed medicinal or aphrodisiac effects.

Juve spent the last five years playing at the Stadio Olympico in Turin since leaving their former Stadio delle Alpi home, which they bought from the local council in 2003, in order to rebuild a stadium on that site. And now 23,000 people have bought season tickets for the 41,000-capacity stadium, an increase of 56 percent on last season’s figure of 14,600 season ticket holders. The new stadium will be inaugurated on September 8, when it’s
official name will be revealed, just three days before its first Serie A match when Parma will be the visitors. Despite being the best-supported club in Italy, on average Juve only filled one third of the 67,000capacity Stadio delle Alpi. The Stadio Olympico wasn’t much more popular with Juve rarely filling out the 28,000-seater stadium which they shared with city neighbours Torino, who will remain there. But the new stadium is more intimate than the old Stadio delle Alpi as there is no running track, meaning fans will be closer to the action. It also has improved facilities, such as a shopping complex built into it and parking space for 4,000 vehicles.
LONDON - Brazil great Pele says in-demand compatriot Neymar should follow his example and stay with Santos rather than move to Europe. The striker’s performances for Santos have drawn comparisons with Pele at the same age and the 19-year-old has been linked to both Chelsea and Manchester City in the English Premier League. However, the 70-year-old Pele, who won three World Cups and spent virtually all his career at Santos, thinks Neymar would be best served by developing at home. “He can be a great player, he can be like (Lionel) Messi or Ronaldo, no doubt,” Pele told reporters at an event in London to launch an opus for the New York Cosmos, where he ended his career. “But I think it’s a little complicated for him to move to a club in England or Italy at the moment. The marking is very tight there. “He would find that a little difficult because he’s very young. The game is very physical in England and Italy. Maybe in Holland or France or even Spain it would be better for him.” With Brazil hosting the World Cup in 2014, Pele believes it would be good for his country’s chances to keep Neymar away from the clutches of Europe’s biggest clubs. “I think it is very difficult to keep him in Brazil,” Pele said. “Santos is my team and he started there with us. Real Madrid and Chinese Super League leaders Guangzhou Evergrande have agreed to a tie-up that could see player exchanges and the Spanish giants opening an academy in China. Madrid, who play Evergrande later Wednesday in a pre-season friendly in Guangzhou, are striving to promote their brand in fast-developing China, as are a host of other top European sides. The two sides on Tuesday signed what Chinese state media called “a letter of intent”, with an eye on cooperation on player exchanges, brand promotion and the opening of the largest football academy in China. “We are building a close relationship with Guangzhou Evergrande (which) we believe will be closer as time goes by,” Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid, was quoted as saying by the Xinhua news agency. “We are working together to establish a football academy in China, which I think is the first step of our cooperation.” Real play their second and final game in China on Saturday in Tianjin, which is close to Beijing. Evergrande have taken the resurgent Super League by storm this season and recently splashed out $10 million on the Argentinian midfielder Dario Conca.

NEW YORK - The National Basketball Association filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the players’ union seeking a ruling that the lockout of players does not violate antitrust laws. The NBA said the lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, arises from the union’s threatened use of antitrust litigation to extract a more favorable contract in ongoing negotiations. “The union’s improper threats of antitrust litigation are having a direct, immediate and harmful effect upon the ability of the parties to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement,” the lawsuit said. The NBA also said on Tuesday that it had filed an unfair labor practice charge against the union before the National Labor Relations Board, saying the players have failed to bargain in good
faith. William Hunter, executive director of the players’ association, said in a statement that the NBA’s actions “are just another example of their bad-faith bargaining, and we will seek the complete dismissal of the actions as they are totally without merit.” Throughout the negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, the NBA said, the players’ union has
repeatedly threatened to renounce its role as the bargaining representative of the NBA players. In its lawsuit, the NBA called the threat “an impermissible negotiating tactic” designed only to commence an antitrust challenge to the lockout and gain leverage in contract negotiations. The NBA contended that the same tactic was pursued by the National Football League players’ union in its most
recent collective bargaining negotiations. In his statement, Hunter said the union has not made any decision about renouncing its role as the collective bargaining representative of the players. “We urge the NBA to engage with us at the bargaining table and to use more productively the short time we have left before the 20112012 season is seriously jeopardized,” he said. In its lawsuit, the NBA also said it is seeking a ruling that federal courts lack jurisdiction to block the lockout. The lawsuit comes a day after NBA officials and players’ representatives met for the first time since
the league declared a lockout on July 1. The dispute involves how to split some $4.3 billion in total revenues. The NBA says an overhaul of the pay structure is needed after 22 of the 30 NBA teams lost money last year. If the dispute is not resolved before the beginning of the season this fall, it could result in the league’s first work stoppage since 1998, when a lockout shortened the season to 50 games from 82. TOKYO — Former Japan captain Yuji Nakazawa says he is still in shock after ex-teammate Naoki Matsuda suffered a cardiac arrest during training. Matsuda collapsed after finishing a 15minute warmup run during training for J-League club Matsumoto Yamaga on Tuesday and was rushed to a hospital. Matsumoto Yamaga officials said Wednesday that he is still unconscious and remains in serious condition. Nakazawa says “I can’t believe it” and “I hope he recovers consciousness quickly and we can hear his voice again soon.” The 34-year-old Matsuda played 40 times for Japan, including at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. He played a total of 385 J-League games for the Yokohama F Marinos from 1995 to 2010.
NEW YORK - Maria Sharapova may not have won a grand slam title since 2008, but the Russian tennis player remains unchallenged as the world’s highest paid woman in professional sports. For the seventh straight year, Sharapova topped the annual list provided by Forbes magazine, despite failing to add to her three grand slam titles, although she did make the Wimbledon final in July. Sharapova’s earnings, mostly off-court endorsements, were estimated at $25 million, twice as much as her nearest rival, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, the current women’s world number one. American racing driver Danica Patrick was third with $12 million followed by tennis players Venus Williams, Belgium’s Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams. Seven of the top nine female earners were tennis players, including China’s Li Na, who made $8 million last year but was expected to soar up the rankings and challenge Sharapova for the top spot after her breakthrough win at the French Open.

Ferrari expects more wins this year Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo says he can now see the “right spirit” in the Italian squad following a difficult start to the season. The Maranello squad has turned its fortunes around after a poor first part of the year, and now Ferrari has been fighting in front, with Fernando Alonso having won the British Grand Prix and having finished second in Valencia and Nurburgring and third in Hungary.
Montezemolo is adamant Ferrari will be a “key player” in the second part of the season, the Italian expecting there are more wins to come. “I can see the right spirit in the team after a very difficult start to the season,” Montezemolo said on Ferrari’s website. “Domenicali and his crew seem very determined, concentrating fully on their tasks for the second part of the year which I am sure will feature Ferrari in the role of a key player. “I expect we will pick up wins to add to the important and
historically very significant victory achieved at Silverstone.” Ferrari said Montezemolo met with team boss Stefano Domenicali, as well as Pat Fry and Luca Marmorini, to discuss the state of the design of the 2012 car and also look at the overal situation in F1, which the team said is now entering a “delicate phase”. “There is no doubt the sport is approaching a delicate phase, featuring important deadlines and new horizons,” said the team on its website. “Ferrari will be keen to look in depth at certain issues in the most appropriate way, aware of its historically central role in the world of motor sport.”

Pirelli reveals new tyre choices PIRELLI has revealed the tyre compounds that it will take to the the next three races in Belgium, Italy and Singapore. For the Spa and Monza races, the Italian manufacturer will take the medium and the soft compounds, while the Singapore night event will see the return of the soft and super soft combination. The soft and the super soft were the tyres used in Monaco, Canada and Hungary, while the soft/medium combination has been the most common in recent races like Britain. “We’re learning more and more with every race in our first year of Formula 1, and fine-tuning our compound choices to benefit from the valuable information that we are accumulating,” said Pirelli’s Paul Hembery. “We’ve got three of the most thrilling races on the entire calendar coming up, and we believe that we’ve arrived at some tyre nominations that are very well-suited to the characteristics of these very different but equally exciting circuits. “Of course there will always be some unknown factors - such as the weather but the choices we have made are designed to help teams maximise both their performance and their race strategy.”
