LOS ANGELES - Steven Spielberg has rarely shied away from a challenge, from deadly sharks in “Jaws” to resurrecting dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park,” but when it came to creating a giant for “The BFG,” his latest film, the veteran director found the prospect “very daunting.” “I don’t usually get intimidated by technology,” Spielberg told Reuters TV. “I usually try and be at the forefront of technology, but this time I was in the wake of it. It took me a couple of weeks to get my sea legs to really realize how I could best utilize the medium of motion capture.” “The BFG,” a Walt Disney film out in theaters on Friday, tells the story of Sophie, an orphaned girl who encounters the Big Friendly Giant (BFG), played by Oscarwinning British actor Mark Rylance and brought to life using motioncapture animation. “The BFG” marks the 30th feature film by the 69-year-old Spielberg, who has won three Oscars over a career spanning five decades that includes “Indiana Jones,” “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan.” Spielberg will be returning for the fifth installment of “Indiana Jones” with star Harrison Ford, due for release in 2019. “I get really flattered when people like my films but I can never see the films the way they can,” he said. “I am never going to enjoy my own output the way other people can.” (rtr)

Who are the terror groups jostling for influence in Bangladesh?

DHAKA - Brutal killings such as the hacking deaths of secular thinkers, LGBT activists and religious minorities, have escalated in Bangladesh in recent months. But even in a country that has become increasingly numb to such attacks, the Dhaka cafe siege that left at least 20 hostages dead Saturday left the nation stunned. While ISIS quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, some experts say al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) is more likely behind the bloodshed, raising concerns that rival terror groups are trying to outdo one another and establish dominance in the region. The rocky political landscape has not helped much, and has only

created room for extremist groups to flourish. Terrorism in the Muslim-majority country can be broadly divided between two groups and their affiliates: Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) is a local ISIS affiliate, while Bangladeshi extremist groups such as the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) follow AQIS.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the Dhaka attack via Amaq, its de facto news agency. But some U.S. officials doubted the claim. The group recently issued a worldwide call to arms during the holy Muslim period of Ramadan, which is ongoing. But ISIS claims responsibility for many attacks, and analysts say sometimes the links between events and the groups are tenuous. The platform ISIS uses for claiming attacks can offer hints to whether it was a plot planned by the group’s central leadership or simply

inspired by ISIS, terrorism expert Sajjan Gohel said. An Amaq announcement, similar to one issued after the Orlando nightclub shooting and the assassination of a French police chief, is typically used when it does not come from the group itself. “If ISIS claims responsibility through Amaq, it tends to be more followers that were inspired by ISIS who may have had some degree of communication but not necessarily have been to Raqqa, Syria, training with them,” Gohel said. “If the claim is made through a Telegram channel, it is very much

directed by them such as in Paris. Extremity of vehicle queue reaches Sumbersari

NEGARA - Prediction that homecoming traffic to reach its peak on day four before holiday or Saturday (Jul. 2) was almost proved. The number of vehicles coming out of Bali rose dramatically, especially private car. Extremity of the queue of private cars even reached Sumbersari village, Melaya or about 12 kilometers from the harbor. In contrast to last year, the length of this queue allegedly occurred because of the absence of additional vessels, particularly the jumbo vessels that can accommodate hundreds of vehicles. In addition, numerous freight vehicles, especially trucks, were seen to pass. As seen on Saturday (Jul. 2) from late morning until the morning, the queue of vehicles was still happening at Cekik forest or about four kilometers. Since Friday night, large number of vehicles coming into Gilimanuk almost simultaneously caused ac-

cumulation of vehicles. Three lanes in public settlements used to break the queue were unable to accommodate the number of incoming vehicles. Up to 06:44, the end of the queue reached the checkpoint post at Sumbersari located about 12 kilometers. A number of homecomers admitted to set off at dawn from their origin and got stalled due to queue in Melaya. Lina Linsiah, 35, a homecomer from Banyuwangi, admitted to queue in Melaya Market around 03:00. Lina driving Toyota Avanza just entered the ferry at

14:00 last Saturday. “The queue is very long and I stand in line for almost12 hours,” said Lina. In the meantime, Fandi, a car driver from Denpasar, admitted to resign to such condition. On Saturday morning Fandi reached the end of the queue at Sumbersari. “I think the queue maximally gets to Cekik, this has not passed through the Klatakan woods. Maybe I will get the time to cross tonight,” said a homecomer to Situbondo. From the experience of previous years, the traffic jam at Cekik is estimated to take place for 5-6 hours. However, with the queue spreading along dozens of kilometers he did not know when he would cross. By noon, the queue of vehicles heading for the harbor began to shrink. Many groups of motorcycle invaded the opposite lane, especially in the Klatakan forest area. As a result, when passing with buses or cars, the lane just enough for two cars became congested. From the direction of Java, many trucks passed along with buses, so that the road was congested. Traffic police looked busy regulating the passing vehicles from both directions. In the meantime, motorized homecomers also piled up outside the harbor area. Vehicle traffic continued to grow resulting in a long queue of motorcycle. Queue of vehicles got to the forest area on Saturday morning because traffic of both directions was congested. Vacant trucks stayed to pass and were stuck between private vehicles. On the other side, based on the data compiled by ASDP, the number of vehicles and passengers from Friday (Jul. 1) at 08:00 through Saturday (Jul. 2) at 08:00 showed an increase when compared to the same day last year. The harbor operates 41 vessels with 212 trips. The number of crossing passengers reached 63,717 people, an increase of 6 percent when compared to last year, reaching 60,347 people, 13,952 motorcycles and 6,405 vehicles, an increase of 17 per-

cent when compared to last year amounting to 5,463 units. So far, only 48 of the total 53 vessels have been in operation. As predicted, similar queue of vehicles, mainly private vehicles, will occur again on Saturday night through Sunday morning. In the meantime, police officers have regulated the traffic maximally at each post all the way heading for the harbor. Moreover, Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, looked to come down immediately to arrange the traffic. However, due to crowded incoming vehicles, the queue could not be avoided. In the meantime, Business Manager of the ASDP Gilimanuk, Sugeng Purwono, confirmed that the condition was very crowded last Saturday. On that account, all the vessels were given 30 minutes for loading and unloading their freight. According to him, the crowded queue happened due to the impact of the crossing trucks. Many trucks entered Bali on the day five before the Eid due to the impact of floods in Situbondo. “Last night many trucks passed. Approximately there were a thousand units. Necessarily they are not allowed to cross, but they are allowed because of the impact of the floods. The trucks can just go after the floods receded,” he said. According to him, from Saturday morning, all the motorcycles and private vehicles were given priority to run. So, in the afternoon the queue has already receded. Thailand, Japan share mutual affection that is rare in Asia

BANGKOK — Thailand is smitten by Japan: Sushi restaurants fill the malls, Issey Miyake’s luxury “Bao Bao” bags are all the rage and Thai tourists are flocking to Japan in record numbers to visit a country many view as a role model.

“I love Japan. They really put their heart into whatever they do,” says Aunyawee Sahachalermphat, 26, who has traveled to Japan more than a dozen times since studying there five years ago and owns at least 10 Comme des Garcons shirts, another popular brand that sounds French but is actually Japanese. Like many Thais, she loves Japanese food and admires the quality of its products and its advanced, orderly economy that retains a respect for tradition. “We look up to them,” she says. Japan, too, has a soft spot for Thailand, although it doesn’t loom nearly as large in the public mind. It’s seen more as a warm, easygoing tourist spot — a welcome break from Japan’s often onerous social codes — and a vital production and export hub for more than 4,500 Japanese companies, including behemoths such as Toyota, Honda and Canon. All this has resulted in a mutual affection between these two nations that’s rare in Asia, where historical, political and territorial tensions often complicate ties. Typical of many in her generation, Aunyawee traces her positive feelings to watching Japanese cartoons such as “Doraemon” and “Sailor Moon” as a child. As an adult, she instinctively trusts anything “Made in Japan” and admires the courteous, subdued manners of many Japanese — widespread sentiments among Thais. Economic and bureaucratic changes have helped foster these ties. Three years ago, Japan waived visas for Thais for up to 15 days, prompting tourist numbers to surge to nearly 800,000 last year, up five-fold from 2011. As Thai incomes have grown and budget carriers such as AirAsia have intensified competition, trips to Japan have become more affordable. Likewise, Japanese tourists can now fly from Tokyo to Bangkok for about the same price as to Okinawa, in southern Japan. There seems to be a cultural affinity between these two peoples — a gentleness, an aversion to conflict and an emphasis on proper etiquette — that creates a sense of familiarity and safety. Yet there are still enough intriguing differences to make the other culture appealing in a non-threatening way. Buddhism, for example, has influenced both countries, although in Thailand it plays a more overt role and it is epitomized by brilliantly colored temples and monks in orange robes, while in Japan it takes on a more subdued form. Both countries have royal families, although the Thai king holds greater sway over society than the emperor does in Japan. “There’s a kindred feeling” with Thais, more so than with

other Asians, said Mariko Uehara, an English instructor from Chigasaki, southwest of Tokyo, who recently visited Thailand for a second time since 2012. “We have something in common that makes us feel secure.” Some 1.38 million Japanese tourists came to Thailand last year, a similar level to previous years. Japan and Thailand aren’t encumbered by historical baggage that has strained ties with their respective neighbors. Tokyo’s ties with China and South Korea are tainted by territorial disputes and lingering resentment over Japan’s aggression before and during World War II. After briefly resisting Japanese troops, Thailand formally became an ally of Tokyo during most of the war and served as a supply base and so suffered less. Japan’s infamous “Death Railway” in western Thailand was built by British, U.S. and Australian POWs and thousands of other Asians. Japan’s rosy image here has been partly shaped by popular books, TV dramas and movies. “Khu Kam,” a novel that has been made into movies many times — titled “Sunset on the Chaophraya” in English — depicts a wartime romance between a Japanese naval officer and a Thai woman in the resistance. He manages to win her over before being killed. Japanese food, once considered a delicacy in Thailand, has become more affordable and popular as more than 2,300 Japanese restaurants have opened up across the country, tripling since 2008. Now a top reason Thais want to go to Japan is to eat authentic Japanese food — in Japan. Chaitee Tandhanskul, a 29-year-old manager in his family’s chemical business, says he makes bookings at restaurants in Japan weeks ahead of time, and bases his itinerary around those reservations. “I’ve traveled many times to Japan just for the culinary experience,” he said. Japan is more popular than previous favorites Hong Kong or Singapore because “it’s much more exotic” and less “robotic,” said Chaitee, who also roams the country taking pictures. Taking their cues from Thai fashion magazines and websites that highlight the latest Japanese styles, Thai women line up in Tokyo to buy Issey Miyake’s “Bao Bao” brand bags, which can cost several hundred dollars and have become a staple of Bangkok’s fashion elite. Shiseido cosmetics, Kenzo shoes and Casio G-Shock watches are also hot. Many Thais also like Japan because it is safe and they believe they won’t get cheated by shopkeepers or taxi drivers, said Kavi Chongkittavorn, a senior fellow at Chulalongkorn University’s Institute of Security and International Studies. The two countries’ economies have become increasingly intertwined. Thailand’s importance to Japanese manufacturers was made plain when severe flooding here in 2011 swamped

many factories and suppliers, disrupting markets as far away as Chicago and London, Japanese Ambassador Shiro Sadoshima said in an interview. “We need to think in terms of being in the same boat as they are — that whatever Thailand is doing well is good for Japan, too,” said Sadoshima, who was surprised to find a big “Ippudo” restaurant in Bangkok serving ramen noodles native to his home island of Kyushu. “It’s bigger and grander than the main shop in Japan,” he said. Japan’s official development aid to Thailand shows up prominently in places like the “Thai-Japanese Bridge” sign — with national flags — on a flyover at a major Bangkok intersection. Assistance from Tokyo helped build 14 of the 21 bridges across the Chao Phraya River that runs through the capital. Officials from the two countries are doing feasibility studies on three high-speed railway lines that would cross the country, the ambassador said. Bangkok has a large Japanese community, many of whom live clustered in an area that resembles parts of Tokyo, with Japanese eateries and yakitori shops lining side streets and Thai hostesses calling out in Japanese. There are at least a couple streets of go-go bars devoted to Japanese customers. Each country offers something appealingly different to the other. The very discipline and proper etiquette that Thais admire about Japanese culture can become an enormous burden to some Japanese who find Thailand’s easygoing, accepting ways a welcome refuge. Kazue Takenaga moved with her three children to Bangkok two years ago to escape the growing educational and social pressures facing her family, especially her 11-year-old daughter. Her husband had car parts factories in Thailand, so she decided to move here and enroll her children in an international school because the country and environment seemed more accepting and diverse than Japan, and yet also familiar. “It’s so good that we came to Thailand,” she said. “Our family’s overall health is much better. The lifestyle is much easier here. The thought of returning to Japan is daunting.” Thais, meanwhile, want to see and experience things in Japan they can’t at home, like snow, cherry blossoms and colored autumn leaves — without traveling all the way to Europe or North America, said Tanong Prakuptanon, who runs a “Japanthaifanclub” Facebook page, which has tips for travelers and more than 230,000 followers. “It’s different, but not too foreign,” he said. “It’s a dream destination.” (ap)

SINGARAJA - Hundreds of turtle eggs on Penimbangan Beach, Baktiseraga village, Buleleng are forced to be relocated to an artificial nest far from the beach. Fishermen incorporated in the Sari Segara group are worried if the turtle eggs will perish due to tidal waves pounding within the past few days. This opportunity is also used by fishermen to learn about the relocation and turtle breeding from the Turtle Conservation Education Center (TCEC) Foundation of Serangan Island, Denpasar. Previously, the eggs of turtle belonging to olive ridley were found on June 18, 2016. Manager of the TECE Foundation of Serangan Island, Made Sukanta, recently said that after the original nest was dug up, a total of 139 turtle eggs were found in good condition. The removal is done due to being close to shore, so that the nest is easily submerged in seawater when a tidal wave occurs. If left unchecked, the turtle eggs are worried to perish and fail to hatch. To help fishermen, Sukanta then taught how to move the turtle eggs to be buried in artificial nests located far from the sea shores. In addition, fishermen in this area are taught how to monitor the development of the eggs through the time to hatch. By moving to artificial nests, he is confident that 50 percent of the 139 turtle eggs can hatch into hatchlings. “We share knowledge with fishermen here about how to treat these turtle eggs including how to move the eggs to artificial nest. Since the original nest located near the sea, the eggs can get wet due to seawater of tidal waves and finally fail to hatch. The safest way to rescue is by moving the eggs to artificial nests and the

eggs should be in the same position as in the original nest,” he said. According to Sukanta, generally the eggs will hatch into hatchlings after the age of 45 to 50 days after discovered. The eggs buried in artificial nest are in need of constant supervision to ensure the condition of the eggs. When exceeding the time limit of 45 or 50 days, fishermen can dig up the nest to see the egg condition. If the eggs are brownish yellow, they surely fail to hatch. Perished eggs can be separated from normal eggs and re-buried while monitoring its development. In addition to providing treatment techniques of the eggs, Sukanta also taught fishermen about the treatment of hatchlings. Having hatched, fishermen are suggested to release the hatchlings directly into their natural habitat. Bali-Penida Agency awaits budgetary realization SINGARAJA - The handling of coastal abrasion at Tinga-Tinga village, Gerokgak, has been proposed by the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS). The proposal has been equipped with technical studies in the form detailed engineering design (DED). However, it has not been approved due to insufficient budget availability in the central government. It is said, the handling of damages to the beach is more focused on the beach directly adjacent to residential areas. It was revealed by Chief of the Bali-Penida River Agency, Putu Edi, Wednesday (Jun. 29). Further, he added that after receiving the reports from the public, including the proposal from the Buleleng district, the Bali-Penida River Agency has proposed the handling to central government. This measure is taken

because the coastal damage is categorized to be severe. Moreover, the coastal areas eroded by the waves are directly adjacent to the area of Segara Temple belonging to Tinga-Tinga customary village. So far, there has been no follow-up of the proposal. Aside from the abrasion at Tinga-Tinga village, the handling proposal of damage to the other beaches in Buleleng has not been approved by central government. This happens due to unreadiness of the existing supporting fund. “Based on the results of the study, the damage is considered quite severe. Since the proposal has not got a follow-up, we remain to wait until it is approved. Perhaps the central government is still thinking about the beach strengthening program in other

regions so that we must be able to understand that the improvement to coastal damages apply priority scale,” he said. In the meantime, the Acting Head of the Buleleng Public Works Agency, Ketut Suparta Wijaya, said that the coastal damages at TingaTinga have occurred since 2012. They were triggered by tidal waves. Due to abrasion by tidal waves, the beach side of about 180 meters from west to east has drifted out to sea. Moreover, the foundation of Segara Temple is also eroded. Similar abrasion also eroded the compound wall of the Celukan Bawang Quarantine Office. Since the damage occurred, the Public Works Agency has proposed a repair to central government. However, the proposal has not been approved until this year. This

condition makes the Public Works unable to do much. Central government through the Bali-Penida River Agency has full authority to strengthen the beaches with revetment technique. “The damage due to disaster in 2012 and the handling lies in the responsibility of the Bali-Penida River Agency. We often coordinate but due to inadequate budget the coastal damages at Tinga-Tinga, including other villages in our region, there is no beach strengthening by the central government,” he explained. On the other hand, Suparta Wijaya said that the length of sandy beaches in the region is recorded to reach 157.050 kilometers. Until this year, the total length of coastal abrasion reaches along 44.017 kilometers. A few years ago, central government has managed to repair

along 37.961 kilometers. Currently the remaining eroded coastal area reaches 6.056 kilometers. The rest of the damages become the homework of local government. The only effort to handle the damages is depending on central government. Other than having the authority, local government does not have enough budgets to handle coastal abrasion. Moreover, the need of budget for strengthening the coast requires expensive budget. He exemplified that one square meter spends the budget at IDR 20 million. “Regional budget is not able to deal with the coastal damage, let alone the cost required is expensive, so that we just wait for the help from central government. DENPASAR - Booth tenants of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) affected by the fire incident at the night market stalls of Kedaton hamlet are relocated to the ground floor of the Ksiraarnawa Building, Denpasar Art Center. They occupy the open area around the pond remaining empty all this time. The Head of the Bali Culture Office, Dewa Putu Beratha, mentioned there are 26 SMEs selling in the booth affected by the fire incident at the Kedaton Night Market. Incidentally the booths are attached to the wall adjacent to the night market area. Of the 26 booths, six of them survived from the raging fire. “Currently, 18 merchants have been accommodated on the ground floor of the Ksiraarnawa Building. They will increase because eight other merchants have not reported back to sell,” he said at the Art Center, Saturday (Jul. 2). Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, also looked to meet and encourage the merchants having started selling in the area of Ksiraarnawa Building. A number of merchants met by Pastika admitted to suffer substantial losses because most of their merchandise had been engulfed in the flames. “All the merchandises in the booths are burned, I bring the remaining merchandise left at home,” said Warka, the owner of a painting booth. Obama backtracks on UK trade warning to limit Brexit fallout

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is backtracking on his warning that Britain would go to the “back of the queue” for a U.S. trade deal, as he tries to contain the fallout of the U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union.

The shift in tone illustrates how Britain’s vote has abruptly scrambled Obama’s reality. Where the president had tried to encourage the U.K. not to rashly abandon the European bloc, he now must reassure Britain that its decision to do so won’t mean its demise. His priority of locking in trade deals before leaving office now becomes a distant second, behind the more urgent task of restoring confidence in the financial markets and in Europe’s future. “The Obama administration — and a number of leaders in Europe as well — is trying to calm the waters. At this point, there are more questions than answers,” said Miriam Sapiro, Obama’s former acting trade representative and now an adviser at the strategy firm Finsbury. Obama’s attempt to show support for a struggling ally casts him in the role of forceful free-trade advocate at a time when all of the major presidential candidates running to replace him are vocally opposed. Yet current and former Obama administration officials are operating under the assumption that Democrat Hillary Clinton, if elected, would come around to supporting Obama’s trade deals after finding ways to reconcile specific concerns she’s raised about jobs, wages and national security. Before Britain’s exit vote, or Brexit, Obama’s administration was deep in negotiations toward a sweeping free trade deal with the 28-nation EU. Supporters of the Brexit had argued the U.K. wouldn’t lose out on U.S. commerce because it could easily broker a one-on-one deal with the U.S. So during a visit to London in April, Obama sought to correct the record, arguing that wouldn’t “happen any time soon.” Obama’s warning reflected his broader belief that separate trade deals with individual countries are too laborious, given the countless regulations, laws and standards that must be aligned to create a free trade zone. Instead, Obama has sought to broker broad deals with universal requirements, so that any country that agrees to the conditions can join. His 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership with Asia, awaiting ratification in Congress, is a prime example of that multi-member approach. So it took many by surprise when, after Britain’s referendum, the White House said the U.S. might still pursue a one-off deal with Britain, but it simply might take longer given

For the Obama administration, pulling back on his trade warning is just one piece of a broader attempt to alleviate concerns about a breakdown in trans-Atlantic unity that has unsettled the global financial system. White House officials have said they expect no change in Britain’s partnership in NATO or

in the fight against the Islamic State group, while CIA Director John Brennan insists intelligence cooperation will continue unabated. At the same time, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other European power-brokers have pressured Britain to pull out sooner than later, Obama has adopted the opposite position. Meeting with other North American leaders on Wednesday, he said “everyone should catch their breath” before pursuing an orderly, measured withdrawal. U.S. officials say it makes little sense to punish Britain by denying it a trade deal. In addition to helping stem global economic anxieties, a free-trade agreement could help Britain continue meeting its NATO pledge to devote 2 percent of GDP to military spending. It all worked out well in the end, though, as 28th seed Querrey won 7-6(6) 6-1 3-6 7-6(5) to become the first player to beat Djokovic in grand slam play since Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in the 2015 French Open final. In doing so he destroyed Djokovic’s dream of emulating Rod Laver’s 1969 feat of winning all four slams in the same year.

“I lost the first four games and kind of went, ‘Oh no, this is going the wrong way quickly’” the laid-back 28-year-old Californian Querrey told reporters after losing a doubles with compatriot Steve Johnson, who also reached the singles last 16. “But, I actually felt pretty levelheaded and steady the whole time. Argentines rally to urge Messi to return to national team

BUENOS AIRES — Hundreds of fans of Lionel Messi gathered in the rain in Argentina’s capital on Saturday to ask that the soccer star return to the national team following his shock retirement from the squad. Messi announced his decision to leave Argentina’s national team after it lost to Chile on penalty kicks last week in the Copa America final in the United States. Support for Messi has been overwhelming on social media with sports figures, artists and politicians urging him to return. Billboards and signs across the city are also asking him to stay.

On Saturday, the cold and rain kept the numbers down with only a few hundred fans gathering to urge their hero to return, not the thousands that had been expected. Messi, who moved to Barcelona at age 13, has often faced criticism in Argentina because he has failed to deliver the country a major title — in contrast to his repeated success at Barcelona. “Messi is the best player in history, both in Argentine and international football. I don’t think we will see another like him in the next thousand years,” said fan Hernan Sanchez during the rally in Buenos Aires. (ap)

BORDEAUX — In the end, it was a tale of two penalties for Leonardo Bonucci. The Italy defender coolly converted the first one to level against Germany in their European Championship quarterfinal on Saturday. But he saw his second spot-kick saved by Manuel Neuer in the shootout after the match had finished 1-1 following extra time. Germany went on to win 6-5 on penalties and defeat Italy for the first time in a competitive match, sealing a spot in the semifinals against either France or Iceland. “We showed that we are at the top level,” Bonucci said. “I am proud of what we have done. There is just the regret that we missed a penalty more than them. “For the rest, I applaud my teammates and the coach because even though we have only been together about a month and a half, it feels like they have been my teammates for years and years in the dressing room.” Bonucci had never taken a penalty before, apart from during shootouts. But he showed determination to step up and fire into the bottom right corner with 12 minutes remaining.
