Abrasion hits Serangan Island although in 1990s a reclamation took place on the island. The Benoa Bay’s reclamation plan worried to cause the same problem like Serangan.
As for Benoa Bay reclamation
Serangan case Shouldn’t be repeated

Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Reclamation plan at Benoa Bay by investor draws strong reactions from the people of Bali. It is feared, the impact of the reclamation in Southern Bali will not only provide welfare, but also leads the people of Bali to misery. The leaders in Bali are asked to make a reflection to the reclamation of Serangan Island whose designation has not been clear yet so far. “Do not let this incident be repeated for the second time. Please resolve first the case of Serangan Island,” said the former legislator of Denpasar, AA Putu Wijaya, in Denpasar, Tuesday (Jul 2). Wijaya doubling as the member of Kerta Desa (judiciary) at Intaran customary village, Sanur, expected the government to have courage to reject the desire of investor wishing to reclaim the sea area at Benoa Bay. Such a plan was accused of having been deviated from the commitment to make the overwater toll road (JDP) intended to break the congestion in Southern Bali. If the reclamation plan would be granted, then the condition of traffic flows at the toll
road would face congestion as well because the capacity would be increasingly crowded. “It must be understood so that all parties dare to reject the plan of investor to reclaim the strategic area for Bali,” said Wijaya. This figure of Intaran customary village also assessed the reclamation plan in the area of Tanjung Benoa was not in line with the plan to reduce the crowdedness in Southern Bali. All this time, the rapid development in Southern Bali
always triggered excessive capacity, so that it resulted in a variety of unresolved social issues, where one of them was congestion. Essentially, construction of the overwater toll road was to resolve traffic congestion in the area. However, if the reclamation plan would be granted, it would consequently increase the number of population in the area and it would aggravate the burden of Southern Bali. “So, I think the effort to reduce congestion will no longer be effective if the government grants the request of investors to reclaim the Benoa Bay,” he said. Wijaya asked the policy makers in Bali to look back the reclamation cases occurring on Serangan Island, South Denpasar. At first, the reclamation of 400 hectares of land made around 1995 aimed to establish tourism infrastructure. Unfortunately, the plan was never realized until now. Even, the reclamation had caused local fishermen to be no longer able to catch fish near the small island as they did ever before. “This should become a lesson for the leaders of Bali,” he said.
