Fanning and Jolie reunite for Disney’s ‘Maleficent II’ LOS ANGELES - Production has begun on the sequel to smash hit “Maleficent,” Disney announced Tuesday, with Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie reprising their roles as Sleeping Beauty and her conflicted surrogate mother. The movie is being filmed at Pinewood Studios, near London and in locations around Britain, the world’s largest movie studio said in statement. “It’s bring your mom to work day on the Maleficent2 set,” 20year-old Fanning (“Trumbo,” “The Beguiled”) joked in an Instagram post that had been shared a quarter of a million times within an hour. Evacuations urged in Hawaii as lava flow advances
Authorities urged people in Hawaii Wednesday to evacuate an area at risk of being cut off by a flood of lava from the erupting Kilauea volcano. “Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that lava from several fissures continues to advance toward the Kapoho area,” a Civil Defense message said, referencing an area that was devastated during a 1960 eruption. “Residents of Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland are ad-
vised to evacuate. You are at risk of being isolated due to possible lava inundation,” the message added. Authorities had earlier advised that lava flow from Fissure 8 had blocked a major highway and caused an electricity blackout, and recommended evacuations of
other nearby areas as telephone communications were cut. Meanwhile, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter at Kilauea itself was recorded on Wednesday at 11:00 am (0000 GMT). Although it was felt strongly in the area, authorities dismissed the possibility of a tsunami. Local authorities could not confirm to AFP how many people would be evacuated. Around
2,000 residents have already abandoned their homes as a result of the eruption, which has destroyed 71 houses so far. The lava has engulfed an area of approximately 9.5 square kilometers, with the majority ending up in the ocean, creating so-called “laze” -- acid fumes created when lava meets water. Kilauea is one of five volcanoes on Hawaii’s Big Island. Scientists believe that volca-

Farmers at Catur process coffee leaves into tea
Beneficial to prevent gastric acid
BANGLI —Other than the bean, the leaves of coffee can be utilized and processed into beverage ingredient. At least, this has been proved by a farmer of Catur village, Kintamani, Gusti Ngurah Rupa. Since last year, Gusti Rupa has started to process coffee leaves into tea powder. His coffee leaf tea is claimed to have many good benefits for bodily health, where one of them is to prevent gastric acid. When met at his residence on Friday (Jun. 1), Gusti Ngurah Rupa revealed that his initial idea of trying to process the coffee leaves into tea powder emerged because he saw the amount of coffee leaf waste generated from the activities of pruning the coffee plants. Regular pruning is done so the coffee plants can grow and bear fruits well. Seeing the amount of leaves wasted, he then tried to innovate by making use of it into something useful namely tea powder. “I think it is very simple how to use this leaf waste into something useful. Previously, the leaves of pruning activities were usually thrown away. Finally, I tried to make it into tea,” he said. He explained it is not difficult to process coffee leaves into tea. Having been pruned, the young coffee leaves are collected and then dried out. To prevent the leaves from being too brown and dry, the coffee leaves must be covered up with cloth when drying out. “In addition to keeping the color to remain greenish brown, it is also meant to maintain the antibody content,” he explained. To give fragrant aroma, the dried coffee leaves are added with slices of fragrant pandan leaves. As for serving, it just needs to be brewed like preparing other tea in general. According to Gusti Rupa, the coffee leaf tea has many benefits where it is good for the health of the body in which one of them is to prevent gastric acid. Besides, it is beneficial to maintain the immune system because it has a high content of antibody substances. It is proved by the durability of coffee leaves against pests and diseases. “Most people are afraid of drinking coffee because their gastric acid will go up. However, I believe that every plant, including coffee, has antidote. Coffee has it in the leaves,” he said. His belief is also reinforced by the results of his consultation to some experts in the field of agriculture stating if the coffee leaves do have a substance with high enough antibodies. In addition to tea made from coffee leaves, Gusti Rupa also tried to make tea from the skin of coffee beans and coffee parasite. According to him, the content possessed by the parasite in coffee plant currently considered a pest of plants is very good for the health of the body, especially to prevent cancer. However, he cannot produce parasite coffee tea in large quantities due to limited raw materials. All this time, his innovation products made from the waste of coffee plants are marketed through exhibitions and promoted directly to the community. However, he admitted so far some of the processed products have begun to be demanded. DENPASAR —Chinese tourists in recent years occupy the highest number of visits to Bali. Such large number also encourages facilities for Chinese tourists in Bali. Undoubtedly, many investors or business owners from China are coming. It is feared to result in imbalanced economic impact on Balinese people. Moreover, China has its own payment system causing state’s foreign exchange to leak. Chairman of the Bali Tourism Board (BTB) or the Indonesia Association of Tourism Industry (GIPI), I.B. Agung Partha Adnyana, said the increase in Chinese tourists’ visit to Bali may also be followed by high investment in Bali especially from China. “There are some, but no accurate data are available,” he said on Friday (Jun. 1). Nevertheless, he hoped China comes only as a guest or a tourist, while the business remains to be owned by Balinese people. The arrival of investment from China will further tighten business competition. “When doing business, they can compete hard with cheap price, cheap quality. Balinese business products will face deteriorating quality. So, the business is expected to remain controlled by Balinese,” he explained. With the entry of China, the results of business are not necessarily enjoyed by the people of Bali, even though they have paid taxes. He hoped that more and more Chinese
tourists coming to Bali are expected to conduct direct transactions in Bali. All this time, the transaction is done through their travel agencies from China. Indeed, there are results from Chinese tourist visits, but he judged they are ineffective because the Chinese payment system does not involve cash but use their own payment system. Similarly, they do not have credit cards. “The transactions conducted in Bali will go to China first and then just go to Indonesia. Almost all tourists do this way, both online and offline,” he added. Meanwhile, other tourists like those from Europe and Australia have their bank representatives in Indonesia such as Citibank. “China should not have, it is governed by the state,” he said. Thus, according to him, Indonesia will experience foreign exchange leaks. The Indonesian government is expected to regulate this and have bargaining power. directly. “Alternatively, they open a branch here or cooperate with our bank,” he concluded. He added that among some countries, only China is implementing this system. The issues of leaked foreign exchange happen because tourist payment system of China is conducted in China. An economic observer from Udayana University, Prof. Wayan Ramantha, said that foreign exchange continued to rise with the incoming Chinese tourists, although some have been cut off by the cashless system. It is better that China does not open a bank in Indonesia or Bali because it will take the business opportunities of local bank. “When opening a bank here, it will also suck the local potential savings and deposits, while they distribute the credit in their home country,” he concluded. The arrival of Chinese tourists in a year is indeed the highest, beating Australia. The quantity of Chinese tourists is also accompanied by its quality. “Many of them stay and eat at the hotels or restaurants owned by Chinese investors, it is legitimate as long as they are legal,” he said. I’m really excited to be here!” Next was Indonesia’s own Oney Anwar, who is currently ranked number 53 in the world on the World Qualifying Series, the qualifying tour for the World Championship Tour. The WSL gave Anwar a spot in the Corona Bali Protected event as the wildcard for the host country. “I’m really proud to represent my country here at this event, and I hope to do good in the event. - How many people smoke? There are around one billion smokers in the world, about a seventh of the global population, according to World Health Organization (WHO) and other estimates. China has the highest number: of its population of 1.3 billion, about 315 million are smokers and they consume more than a third of the world’s cigarettes, the WHO said in a report last year. Indonesia has the highest proportion of smokers at 76 percent of men aged over 15.
About 80 percent of the world’s smokers live in low- and middle-income countries and 226 million of them are considered poor.
- On the decline? A study published in The Lancet medical journal in April 2017 says the percentage of people using tobacco every day has dropped in 25 years. One in four men and one in 20 women smoked daily in 2015, down from one in three men and one in 12 women in 1990, it found. But reductions in smoking rates in some nations “are almost entirely offset by the increasing consumption in many countries with weaker tobacco control regulations,” says The Tobacco Atlas anti-smoking lobby. These include poorer parts of the world, in particular in sub-
Saharan Africa. Tobacco use has decreased in places such as Australia, Brazil and Britain, where anti-smoking measures include higher taxes, bans and health warnings. Electronic cigarettes have also entered some markets. France reports a million fewer daily smokers in 2017 over 2016. Tobacco sales have even declined in China, down by 10 percent from a peak in 2012, according to the Euromonitor International market research group.

other businesses in the field of accessories rental services, wedding attires, photography and vintage car rental for wedding equipment. Other than achieving financial success, the business pursued up to these days by this father of two children also helps the government in reducing unemployment. Several years ago, he could hire up to 54 people from residents around his home. “My workforce is not limited to help but also learn. Today, many of them have opened their own business after being inspired by my business,” he said. He also claimed to be quite proud
of his business pursued all this time. No matter how small the business owned, it remains a pride, let alone the business has been able to help reduce unemployment. He also hoped his entrepreneurship can be followed by other young generation. GIANYAR — On entering this June, the ranks of Gianyar Police have been preparing the security of homecoming traffic, especially in the path that passes Jalan Bypass Prof. I.B. Mantra, Gianyar district. Through the security named the Ketupat Agung Operation 2018 police prepare dozens of posts with hundreds of personnel. Philosophical messages in Kertha Gosa paintings
MONTREUIL - At the French migrant workers’ hostel where “Spiderman” Mamoudou Gassama was sleeping on a floor before becoming a folk hero for saving a child, his exploits have triggered a wave of pride tinged with envy.
KERTHA Gosa in Klungkung has been known as a heritage of the royal period. Until now it remains well maintained. The building features a classic atmosphere. There are a number of stories contained in the paintings mounted on the ceiling. What are they?

Kertha Gosa paintings A tour guide, I Putu Gede Alex Sanjaya Putra, said the paintings have existed since the beginning of the building. One by one is explained based on the existing references. At the bottom plot, the story tells about Tantri Kandaka, the 1001-night stories whose essence is about all the deceit in society. The second and third plots carry about the Atma Presangsa, depicting the suffering of the souls in Hell found by Bima Sena (second son of the Pandavas) on his way to find out the souls of his father and mother. The fourth plot is about the eagle seeking amrita (holy water of life), taken from Adi Parwa, a story that illustrates how difficult it is to earn a living in the world. Meanwhile, the fifth plot tells about palelindon (forecast
and meaning of earthquakes). The sixth and seventh plots tell about Bima Sena when meeting with divine and celestial deities and fighting to save the souls of his father and mother. Meanwhile, the eighth plot tells about the heaven of the souls and the ninth plot about the god who serves as the keeper of the balance of the four points of the compass of the world. “This painting becomes one of the tourist attractions,” explained Sanjaya Putra, not long ago. Right in the middle of this building area is the Taman Gili. Local community is more familiar with the name of Balai Kambang (literally means ‘the floating pavilion’) surrounded by a fish pond with water lilies. To get there, visitors should explore some
steps that also show the old impression. This building has many poles. The carving is similar to the ones in the Kertha Gosa. This also draws the attention of visitors as intrigued by the story of the paintings on the ceiling. Near the brick-using foundation building, there is a small note explaining the meaning of the paintings. The first plot from below tells the story about the destiny of a person predetermined by the day of birth. The second plot depicts the story of Pan Berayut, a fairy tale about the couple having 18 children. As for the third to sixth plot tell about the story of Sutasoma, the work of renowned poet, Mpu Tantular during the reign of King Hayam Wuruk in Majapahit in 1365. (sos)
This week television crews swarmed the centre in the eastern Paris suburb of Montreuil to find out more about the 22-year-old Malian who was captured on video scaling an apartment block to bring a child hanging from a balcony to safety. Many residents were unaware the shy youth was living at the hostel and happy to see him hailed for his bravery by President Emmanuel Macron and being placed on a fast track to French citizenship. “He lives here? It’s incredible,” said Adama Kone, a 35-year-old Mauritania native. The all-male facility, which has an official capacity of 430 but houses many more, is part of a network of hostels built to accommodate a wave of migrant workers arriving from Africa starting in the 1960s. On his arrival in France in September 2017 after travelling the Mediterranean migrant route, Gassama was given a mattress on the floor in a room occupied by his 54-year-old brother Birama and three relatives from his home village of Yaguine in western Mali. The modest room, furnished with just two bunk beds and a television placed on top of a fridge, was once occupied by Mamoudou’s father, according to Birama. He was glued to the television on Monday as footage of Mamoudou meeting Macron in the gilded settings of the Elysee Palace was being played on a loop. “As a foreigner I am really pleased,” he said. “He could have fallen and died. Each tank truck has the capacity of 3 times 16 kilo liters. They will go back and forth in the ITDC area.
The increase in stock is intended for gasoline type. Other than using private vehicles consuming gasoline, the delegates also use bus transportation. Based on the APEC experience, the mostly used fuel type is gasoline. The IMF will also bring delegates to six tourist destinations like Labuan Bajo. “Mobility to Labuan Bajo will use gasoline while the gasoil will be used for the activities during the
conference only,” he said. Private vehicles to be used by the delegates are estimated to belong to the latest specification that is using RON 95 and upper. The type of fuel with RON 95 and upper is Pertamax Turbo and Pertamina Dex. Both fuel types are eco-friendly. Previously, Pertamina has similar experience when facing the APEC with 180 delegates and approximately 3,000 participants.

Merkel offers Macron concessions on eurozone reforms
German Chancellor Angela Merkel delivered a long-awaited answer to French President Emmanuel Macron’s ambitious call for European Union reforms Sunday, offering olive branches on investment and help for debt-mired eurozone member states.
More than a year after Macron took office with the stated mission to bolster the EU and make it more responsive to its citizens, Merkel’s counter-offer comes at a time of heightened concern about the future of the bloc due to political turmoil in Italy and Spain and transatlantic tensions. Merkel told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung ahead of a crunch EU summit this month that Germany as the eurozone’s top economy would support an investment budget whose total would be “at the lower end of the double-digit billions of euros range”. She said the “rainy day fund”, as it has been dubbed, would serve to help even out economic imbalances between richer and poorer European countries “which need to catch up in the areas of science, technology and innovation”. “We need quicker economic convergence between the member states,” she said. “To do that we have to strengthen investment capability with the help of additional structural policies,” she said, adding that the fund would be phased in gradually and then evaluated in terms of its effectiveness. Two of Karangasem’s distinctive cultural traditions; Terteran and Gebug Ende (fire dance and rain dance) will soon be named as official cultural heritages. After the administrative requirements were met, the Ministry of Education and Culture assured that they qualified as cultural heritages. The next step in the process is to have a team from the central government verify these cultural heritage traditions. Division Head of Arts for the Karangasem Culture and Tourism Agency Ni Made Suradnyani explained that a proposal to have these distinctive Karangasem traditions recognised as national cultural heritages was submited to the central government in January 2016 and that the tradions from Seraya Village and Jasri Village, were finally accepted. The verification process will take place next June. Other than Terteran of Jasri village and Gebug Ende of Seraya village, said Suradnyani, the Bali Culture Office also recommended the Usaba Aci Sumbu of Timbrah village that involves thousands of roasted suckling pigs being presented as holy offerings. However, the recommendation failed to qualify at the national level because the administrative requirements were not complete. The Karangasem Culture an Tourism Agence will be improving
the shortcomings of the application through the Bali Cultural Preservation Agency. This unique culture of Timbrah customary village will be proposed again to the central government through the recommendation of the Bali government along with the Geret Pandan tradition of Tenganan Pegeringsingan and Usaba Dangsil of Bungaya village. The latter two traditions are still being studied and documented in preparation for the proposal.
Determination of the cultural property of Karangasem is necessary to avoid any claims to them that may be commited by other regions or countries.. Lately, cultural claim cases used to support tourism promotion of particular regions or countries are increasingly common. Jordan protests snowball over IMF-backed austerity AMMAN - Angry protests rocked cities across Jordan overnight against IMF-backed austerity measures including a new income tax draft law and price hikes, hours after the government and unions failed to reach an agreement to end the standoff. Some 3,000 people faced down a heavy security presence to gather near the prime minister’s office in Amman until the early hours of Saturday morning, waving Jordanian flags and signs reading “we will not kneel”. Protests have gripped the country since Wednesday, when hundreds responding to a call by trade unions, flooded the streets of Amman and other cities to demand the fall of the government. Last month, the government proposed an income tax draft law, yet to be approved by parliament, aimed at raising taxes on employees by at least 5
percent and on companies by between 20 and 40 percent. The measures are the latest in a series of economic reforms since Amman secured a $723-million three-year credit line from the International Monetary Fund in 2016. Since January, Jordan -- which suffers high unemployment and has few natural resources -- has seen repeated price rises including on staples such as bread, as well as extra taxes on basic goods. The price of fuel has risen on five occasions since the beginning of the year, while electricity bills have shot up 55 percent since February. The IMF-backed measures have sparked some of the biggest economic protests in five years. GAZA CITY - Israeli aircraft pounded over a dozen militant targets in Gaza, the army said Sunday, after Palestinian projectile fire shattered a ceasefire reached just days ago after the worst flareup since a 2014 war. The latest escalation came hours after thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of a young female volunteer medic killed by Israeli fire in violence on the border in southern Gaza. In a first wave of air strikes, Israeli “fighter jets targeted 10 terror sites in three military compounds belonging to the Hamas terror organisation in the Gaza Strip,” the army said in a statement early Sunday. “Among the targets were two Hamas munition manufacturing and storage sites and a military compound,” the army said. The strikes were retaliation to rockets fired at Israel, as well as “various terror activities approved and orchestrated by the Hamas terror organisation over the weekend,” the army said. The army listed a series of attempted attacks at soldiers on the border fence, as well as “damaging security infrastructure and igniting fires in Israeli territory with the use of arson kites and balloons”. A few hours later aircraft shot at “five terror targets at a military compound belonging to the Hamas terror organization’s naval force in the northern Gaza Strip,” the army said in a separate statement. There were no immediate reports of casualties in Gaza. On Saturday evening, militants in the Palestinian enclave fired two projectiles at southern Israel, where air raid sirens sent residents to bomb shelters. The Iron Dome aerial defence system intercepted one of the projectiles, while the other was believed to have fallen short of its target and hit within Gaza, according to the army. of 27,550,” Head of Sub-Division of Administration of the Komodo National Park Dwi Sugiarto stated here on Saturday. Sugiarto pointed out that countries that dominated tourist arrivals to Komodo during the January-April 2018 period were the United Kingdom, with 2,952 visitors, and Aus-
tralia, with 2,831 travelers, in addition to 2,364 German tourists, 1,386 Dutch, and one thousand tourists from Italy. Sugiarto noted that the flow of tourists to Komodo Park, one of the 10 national flagship tourist destinations, was dominated by foreign visitors. The total number of tourists visiting during the time
was recorded at 45,630 people comprising 27,550 foreign tourists and 17,640 domestic tourists. According to Sugiarto, the flow of tourists increased sharply as compared to the first quarter in 2017, in which only 38,147 people were recorded. This increase is supported by various intensive promotion efforts by relevant government agencies in the region along with the central government and tourism business players. He noted that the number of
tourist arrivals in 2017 was recorded at 125,069 people dominated by 76,612 foreign tourists, while domestic travelers reached 48,457 people. “The flow of foreign tourists in 2017 was mostly from Australia, with a total of 7,412 people, followed by Germany, 7,330 people; Italy, 6,405 visitors; and others from France, the United States, and Spain,” he stated.(ant)

Indonesia’s central bank hiked its key interest rate Wednesday for the second time this month to prop up the rupiah after it slumped to its lowest level in three years. Policymakers at Bank Indonesia hiked rates to 4.75 percent from 4.50 percent, following a similar rise from 4.25 percent in mid-May. The rupiah slid by some four percent from the start of the year to fall below 14,000 against the dollar, its weakest level since 2015. The two rate hikes this month -- the first since 2014 -- underscore concerns about emerging market currencies, including the rupiah, as rising US interest rates lure investors to dollardenominated assets. “Generally our economy is quite
solid but there is global pressure that needs an immediate response,” newlyinaugurated Bank Indonesia governor Perry Warjiyo told reporters after a meeting. He also left the door open to more rate hikes. While the latest move may offer respite to the depreciating currency, it could stifle efforts to boost sluggish growth rates. In a bid to rev up Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, the central bank had been repeatedly slashing rates over the past year and a half until it reversed course with this month’s hikes. PALEMBANG - Two additional water-bombing helicopters have been sent to Palembang, South Sumatra Province, for anticipating wildfires during the 18th Asian Games that will be held from Aug 18 to Sep 2, an official said here on Saturday. Iriansyah, head of the South Sumatra Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD), said that the two units of water-bombing helicopters are now being assembled in Palembang City. Having capacity of 600 liters and 500 liters respectively, the helicopters will be operated to extinguish the wildfires and to conduct patrols at the fire-prone areas in South Sumatra. These two units of waterbombing helicopters are part of 10 additional units that will be used during the Asian Games, he said. Besides the two units, four other helicopters have completely been assembled so that they are ready for operation, he said adding that those choppers will play a critical role in extinguishing fires in isolated areas, mainly at peatland and forests. According to Iriansyah, his office is committed to
preventing the wildfires and hazes from occurring in accordance to the instruction ordered by South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin. Besides South Sumatra, the authorities in Riau Province have also been committed to anticipating the wildfires by extending the emergency status last month. Southgate still has time to work on those tactical issues as England have one more friendly -against Costa Rica in Leeds on Thursday - before they fly to Russia for their Group G opener against Tunisia in Volgograd on June 18. “We played really well, with the ball especially. Far more good situations than in recent games,” Southgate insisted. “The period leading up to their goal, they changed their system and we took some time to adjust. “But after that we dealt with it well. Trio head home from ISS with football slated for World Cup Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov was on his way back to Earth on Sunday along with an official match football that could be used later this month in the opening game of the World Cup in Moscow. Shkaplerov, Scott Tingle of the United States and Norishige Kanai of Japan undocked from the International Space Station in their Soyuz MS-07 capsule and began making their descent at 0916 GMT according to the Russian space agency Roscosmos. They are set to land in Kazakhstan around 1240 GMT after having spent 168 days in space. Roscosmos posted on Thursday a video of Shkaplerov and fellow cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev practicing in the ISS with an Adidas Telstar 18 football. Russian news agency TASS reported that the ball is planned to be used during the opening game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow on June 14, although FIFA has not confirmed that information. Shkaplerov, Tingle and Kanai spent more than five months in space working on a variety of scientific experiments. First-time flyer Tingle also completed a spacewalk to replace the hand on the station’s robotic arm.(afp)

Jordan protests snowball over IMF-backed austerity AMMAN - Angry protests rocked cities across Jordan overnight against IMF-backed austerity measures including a new income tax draft law and price hikes, hours after the government and unions failed to reach an agreement to end the standoff. Some 3,000 people faced down a heavy security presence to gather near the prime minister’s office in Amman until the early hours of Saturday morning, waving Jordanian flags and signs reading “we will not kneel”. Protests have gripped the country since Wednesday, when hundreds responding to a call by trade unions, flooded the streets of Amman and other cities to demand the fall of the government. Last month, the government proposed an income tax draft law, yet to be approved by parliament, aimed at raising taxes on employees by at least 5
percent and on companies by between 20 and 40 percent. The measures are the latest in a series of economic reforms since Amman secured a $723-million three-year credit line from the International Monetary Fund in 2016. Since January, Jordan -- which suffers high unemployment and has few natural resources -- has seen repeated price rises including on staples such as bread, as well as extra taxes on basic goods. The price of fuel has risen on five occasions since the beginning of the year, while electricity bills have shot up 55 percent since February. The IMF-backed measures have sparked some of the biggest economic protests in five years. Overnight, protesters outside premier Hani Mulki’s office shouted slogans including “the ones raising prices want to burn the country” and “this Jordan is our Jordan, Mulki should leave”. (afp)
GAZA CITY - Israeli aircraft pounded over a dozen militant targets in Gaza, the army said Sunday, after Palestinian projectile fire shattered a ceasefire reached just days ago after the worst flareup since a 2014 war. The latest escalation came hours after thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of a young female volunteer medic killed by Israeli fire in violence on the border in southern Gaza. In a first wave of air strikes, Israeli “fighter jets targeted 10 terror sites in three military compounds belonging to the Hamas terror organisation in the Gaza Strip,” the army said in a statement early Sunday. “Among the targets were two Hamas munition manufacturing and storage sites and a military compound,” the army said. The strikes were retaliation to rockets fired at Israel, as well as “various terror activities approved and orchestrated by the Hamas terror organisation over the weekend,” the army said. The army listed a series of attempted attacks at soldiers on the border fence, as well as “damaging security infrastructure and igniting fires in Israeli territory with the use of arson kites and balloons”. A few hours later aircraft shot at “five terror targets at a military compound belonging to the Hamas terror organization’s naval force in the northern Gaza Strip,” the army said in a separate statement. There were no immediate reports of casualties in Gaza. On Saturday evening, militants in the Palestinian enclave fired two projectiles at southern Israel, where air raid sirens sent residents to bomb shelters. The Iron Dome aerial defence system intercepted one of the projectiles, while the other was believed to have fallen short of its target and hit within Gaza, according to the army. Early Sunday, four more projectiles were separately launched at Israel. Three were intercepted, the army said, with the fourth apparently hitting an open field. (afp)

KUPANG - The Komodo National Park Office recorded that the United States was the main contributor of foreign tourists to Komodo Park from January to April 2018, reaching a total of 3,078 people. “Foreign tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2018 were dominated by the United States, with 3,078 visitors, from the total figure
of 27,550,” Head of Sub-Division of Administration of the Komodo National Park Dwi Sugiarto stated here on Saturday. Sugiarto pointed out that countries that dominated tourist arrivals to Komodo during the January-April 2018 period were the United Kingdom, with 2,952 visitors, and Aus-
tralia, with 2,831 travelers, in addition to 2,364 German tourists, 1,386 Dutch, and one thousand tourists from Italy. Sugiarto noted that the flow of tourists to Komodo Park, one of the 10 national flagship tourist destinations, was dominated by foreign visitors. The total number of tourists visiting during the time
was recorded at 45,630 people comprising 27,550 foreign tourists and 17,640 domestic tourists. According to Sugiarto, the flow of tourists increased sharply as compared to the first quarter in 2017, in which only 38,147 people were recorded. This increase is supported by various intensive promotion efforts by relevant government agencies in the region along with the central government and tourism business players. He noted that the number of
tourist arrivals in 2017 was recorded at 125,069 people dominated by 76,612 foreign tourists, while domestic travelers reached 48,457 people. “The flow of foreign tourists in 2017 was mostly from Australia, with a total of 7,412 people, followed by Germany, 7,330 people; Italy, 6,405 visitors; and others from France, the United States, and Spain,” he stated.(ant)

Indonesia’s central bank hiked its key interest rate Wednesday for the second time this month to prop up the rupiah after it slumped to its lowest level in three years. Policymakers at Bank Indonesia hiked rates to 4.75 percent from 4.50 percent, following a similar rise from 4.25 percent in mid-May. The rupiah slid by some four percent from the start of the year to fall below 14,000 against the dollar, its weakest level since 2015. The two rate hikes this month -- the first since 2014 -- underscore concerns about emerging market currencies, including the rupiah, as rising US interest rates lure investors to dollardenominated assets. “Generally our economy is quite
solid but there is global pressure that needs an immediate response,” newlyinaugurated Bank Indonesia governor Perry Warjiyo told reporters after a meeting. He also left the door open to more rate hikes. While the latest move may offer respite to the depreciating currency, it could stifle efforts to boost sluggish growth rates. In a bid to rev up Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, the central bank had been repeatedly slashing rates over the past year and a half until it reversed course with this month’s hikes. Indonesian President Joko Widodo came to power in 2014 on a pledge to boost annual growth to seven percent, but the commodities-driven economy has remained stuck in the 5.0 percent range.(afp)
PALEMBANG - Two additional water-bombing helicopters have been sent to Palembang, South Sumatra Province, for anticipating wildfires during the 18th Asian Games that will be held from Aug 18 to Sep 2, an official said here on Saturday. Iriansyah, head of the South Sumatra Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD), said that the two units of water-bombing helicopters are now being assembled in Palembang City. Having capacity of 600 liters and 500 liters respectively, the helicopters will be operated to extinguish the wildfires and to conduct patrols at the fire-prone areas in South Sumatra. These two units of waterbombing helicopters are part of 10 additional units that will be used during the Asian Games, he said. Besides the two units, four other helicopters have completely been assembled so that they are ready for operation, he said adding that those choppers will play a critical role in extinguishing fires in isolated areas, mainly at peatland and forests. According to Iriansyah, his office is committed to
preventing the wildfires and hazes from occurring in accordance to the instruction ordered by South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin. Besides South Sumatra, the authorities in Riau Province have also been committed to anticipating the wildfires by extending the emergency status last month. Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has pledged to maintain coordination with all stakeholders to anticipate land and forest fires, the first secretary, Widada Sulistya said recently. The agency has announced nine fire-prone provinces, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan. The 18th Asian Games will take place in Jakarta and Palembang. Merkel offers Macron concessions on eurozone reforms
German Chancellor Angela Merkel delivered a long-awaited answer to French President Emmanuel Macron’s ambitious call for European Union reforms Sunday, offering olive branches on investment and help for debt-mired eurozone member states.
More than a year after Macron took office with the stated mission to bolster the EU and make it more responsive to its citizens, Merkel’s counter-offer comes at a time of heightened concern about the future of the bloc due to political turmoil in Italy and Spain and transatlantic tensions. Merkel told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung ahead of a crunch EU summit this month that Germany as the eurozone’s top economy would support an investment budget whose total would be “at the lower end of the double-digit billions of euros range”. She said the “rainy day fund”, as it has been dubbed, would serve to help even out economic imbalances between richer and poorer European countries “which need to catch up in the areas of science, technology and innovation”. “We need quicker economic convergence between the member states,” she said. “To do that we have to strengthen investment capability with the help of additional structural policies,” she said, adding that the fund would be phased in gradually and then evaluated in terms of its effectiveness. Although Merkel’s budget target falls short of the range proposed by Macron, it represents a concession of sorts to his view that an excess of austerity has undermined faith in the bloc. - ‘Don’t wait, act now’ Merkel also addressed plans to upgrade the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), which oversees bailout loans to troubled member states, such as Greece, into a European Monetary Fund. “We aim to make ourselves a little more independent of the International Monetary Fund,” she said. Two of Karangasem’s distinctive cultural traditions; Terteran and Gebug Ende (fire dance and rain dance) will soon be named as official cultural heritages. After the administrative requirements were met, the Ministry of Education and Culture assured that they qualified as cultural heritages. The next step in the process is to have a team from the central government verify these cultural heritage traditions. Division Head of Arts for the Karangasem Culture and Tourism Agency Ni Made Suradnyani explained that a proposal to have these distinctive Karangasem traditions recognised as national cultural heritages was submited to the central government in January 2016 and that the tradions from Seraya Village and Jasri Village, were finally accepted. The verification process will take place next June. Other than Terteran of Jasri village and Gebug Ende of Seraya village, said Suradnyani, the Bali Culture Office also recommended the Usaba Aci Sumbu of Timbrah village that involves thousands of roasted suckling pigs being presented as holy offerings. However, the recommendation failed to qualify at the national level because the administrative requirements were not complete. The Karangasem Culture an Tourism Agence will be improving
the shortcomings of the application through the Bali Cultural Preservation Agency. This unique culture of Timbrah customary village will be proposed again to the central government through the recommendation of the Bali government along with the Geret Pandan tradition of Tenganan Pegeringsingan and Usaba Dangsil of Bungaya village. The latter two traditions are still being studied and documented in preparation for the proposal.
Determination of the cultural property of Karangasem is necessary to avoid any claims to them that may be commited by other regions or countries.. Lately, cultural claim cases used to support tourism promotion of particular regions or countries are increasingly common. Right in the middle of this building area is the Taman Gili. Local community is more familiar with the name of Balai Kambang (literally means ‘the floating pavilion’) surrounded by a fish pond with water lilies. To get there, visitors should explore some

The modest room, furnished with just two bunk beds and a television placed on top of a fridge, was once occupied by Mamoudou’s father, according to Birama. the normal stock is prepared for 191 gas stations in Bali mainly in the areas close to the ITDC conference venue. Approximately there are ten gas stations around the ITDC. “Transportable tank trucks will be operated. So, they can serve consumers directly,” he explained on Thursday (May 31). Each tank truck has the capacity of 3 times 16 kilo liters. They will go back and forth in the ITDC area.
The increase in stock is intended for gasoline type. Other than using private vehicles consuming gasoline, the delegates also use bus transportation. Based on the APEC experience, the mostly used fuel type is gasoline. The IMF will also bring delegates to six tourist destinations like Labuan Bajo. “Mobility to Labuan Bajo will use gasoline while the gasoil will be used for the activities during the
conference only,” he said. Private vehicles to be used by the delegates are estimated to belong to the latest specification that is using RON 95 and upper. The type of fuel with RON 95 and upper is Pertamax Turbo and Pertamina Dex. Both fuel types are eco-friendly. Previously, Pertamina has similar experience when facing the APEC with 180 delegates and approximately 3,000 participants.

- How many people smoke? There are around one billion smokers in the world, about a seventh of the global population, according to World Health Organization (WHO) and other estimates. China has the highest number: of its population of 1.3 billion, about 315 million are smokers and they consume more than a third of the world’s cigarettes, the WHO said in a report last year. Indonesia has the highest proportion of smokers at 76 percent of men aged over 15.
About 80 percent of the world’s smokers live in low- and middle-income countries and 226 million of them are considered poor.
- On the decline? A study published in The Lancet medical journal in April 2017 says the percentage of people using tobacco every day has dropped in 25 years. One in four men and one in 20 women smoked daily in 2015, down from one in three men and one in 12 women in 1990, it found. But reductions in smoking rates in some nations “are almost entirely offset by the increasing consumption in many countries with weaker tobacco control regulations,” says The Tobacco Atlas anti-smoking lobby. These include poorer parts of the world, in particular in sub-
Saharan Africa. Tobacco use has decreased in places such as Australia, Brazil and Britain, where anti-smoking measures include higher taxes, bans and health warnings. Farmers at Catur process coffee leaves into tea

BANGLI —Other than the bean, the leaves of coffee can be utilized and processed into beverage ingredient. At least, this has been proved by a farmer of Catur village, Kintamani, Gusti Ngurah Rupa. Since last year, Gusti Rupa has started to process coffee leaves into tea powder. His coffee leaf tea is claimed to have many good benefits for bodily health, where one of them is to prevent gastric acid. When met at his residence on Friday (Jun. 1), Gusti Ngurah Rupa revealed that his initial idea of trying to process the coffee leaves into tea powder emerged because he saw the amount of coffee leaf waste generated from the activities of pruning the coffee plants. Regular pruning is done so the coffee plants can grow and bear fruits well. Seeing the amount of leaves wasted, he then tried to innovate by making use of it into something useful namely tea powder. “I think it is very simple how to use this leaf waste into something useful. Previously, the leaves of pruning activities were usually thrown away. Finally, I tried to make it into tea,” he said. He explained it is not difficult to process coffee leaves into tea. Having been pruned, the young coffee leaves are collected and then dried out. To prevent the leaves from being too brown and dry, the coffee leaves must be covered up with cloth when drying out. “In addition to keeping the color to remain greenish brown, it is also meant to maintain the antibody content,” he explained. To give fragrant aroma, the dried coffee leaves are added with slices of fragrant pandan leaves. As for serving, it just needs to be brewed like preparing other tea in general. According to Gusti Rupa, the coffee leaf tea has many benefits where it is good for the health of the body in which one of them is to prevent gastric acid. Besides, it is beneficial to maintain the immune system because it has a high content of antibody substances. It is proved by the durability of coffee leaves against pests and diseases. “Most people are afraid of drinking coffee because their gastric acid will go up. However, I believe that every plant, including coffee, has antidote. Coffee has it in the leaves,” he said. His belief is also reinforced by the results of his consultation to some experts in the field of agriculture stating if the coffee leaves do have a substance with high enough antibodies. In addition to tea made from coffee leaves, Gusti Rupa also tried to make tea from the skin of coffee beans and coffee parasite. According to him, the content possessed by the parasite in coffee plant currently considered a pest of plants is very good for the health of the body, especially to prevent cancer. However, he cannot produce parasite coffee tea in large quantities due to limited raw materials. All this time, his innovation products made from the waste of coffee plants are marketed through exhibitions and promoted directly to the community. However, he admitted so far some of the processed products have begun to be demanded. DENPASAR —Chinese tourists in recent years occupy the highest number of visits to Bali. Such large number also encourages facilities for Chinese tourists in Bali. Undoubtedly, many investors or business owners from China are coming. It is feared to result in imbalanced economic impact on Balinese people. Moreover, China has its own payment system causing state’s foreign exchange to leak. Chairman of the Bali Tourism Board (BTB) or the Indonesia Association of Tourism Industry (GIPI), I.B. Agung Partha Adnyana, said the increase in Chinese tourists’ visit to Bali may also be followed by high investment in Bali especially from China. “There are some, but no accurate data are available,” he said on Friday (Jun. 1). Nevertheless, he hoped China comes only as a guest or a tourist, while the business remains to be owned by Balinese people. The arrival of investment from China will further tighten business competition. “When doing business, they can compete hard with cheap price, cheap quality. Balinese business products will face deteriorating quality. So, the business is expected to remain controlled by Balinese,” he explained. With the entry of China, the results of business are not necessarily enjoyed by the people of Bali, even though they have paid taxes. He hoped that more and more Chinese
tourists coming to Bali are expected to conduct direct transactions in Bali. All this time, the transaction is done through their travel agencies from China. Indeed, there are results from Chinese tourist visits, but he judged they are ineffective because the Chinese payment system does not involve cash but use their own payment system. Similarly, they do not have credit cards. “The transactions conducted in Bali will go to China first and then just go to Indonesia. Almost all tourists do this way, both online and offline,” he added. Meanwhile, other tourists like those from Europe and Australia have their bank representatives in Indonesia such as Citibank. “China should not have, it is governed by the state,” he said. The issues of leaked foreign exchange happen because tourist payment system of China is conducted in China. An economic observer from Udayana University, Prof. Wayan Ramantha, said that foreign exchange continued to rise with the incoming Chinese tourists, although some have been cut off by the cashless system. It is better that China does not open a bank in Indonesia or Bali because it will take the business opportunities of local bank. “When opening a bank here, it will also suck the local potential savings and deposits, while they distribute the credit in their home country,” he concluded. The arrival of Chinese tourists in a year is indeed the highest, beating Australia. The quantity of Chinese tourists is also accompanied by its quality. “Many of them stay and eat at the hotels or restaurants owned by Chinese investors, it is legitimate as long as they are legal,” he said. Fanning and Jolie reunite for Disney’s ‘Maleficent II’ LOS ANGELES - Production has begun on the sequel to smash hit “Maleficent,” Disney announced Tuesday, with Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie reprising their roles as Sleeping Beauty and her conflicted surrogate mother. The movie is being filmed at Pinewood Studios, near London and in locations around Britain, the world’s largest movie studio said in statement. “It’s bring your mom to work day on the Maleficent2 set,” 20year-old Fanning (“Trumbo,” “The Beguiled”) joked in an Instagram post that had been shared a quarter of a million times within an hour. Alongside the message, she posted a picture of her in front of a laughing Jolie, who was in the famous “Maleficent” horns, as well as a pair of sunglasses and a toweling bathrobe. “Maleficent,” a modern retelling of the life of Sleeping Beauty’s arch-nemesis, cast an instant spell
on audiences in 2014, debuting at the top of the North American box office and going on to gross more than $750 million worldwide. Joining Fanning and Jolie for the latest adventure are Oscar nominees Michelle Pfeiffer (“Dangerous Liaisons,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp”) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave,” “Doctor Strange”). Disney also confirmed that acclaimed British stage and screen actor Robert Lindsay (“Wimbledon”) would be among the newcomers, while Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville return from the original movie. In the sequel, directed by Joachim Ronning (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”), Disney’s most notorious villain continues to explore her complex relationship with Princess Aurora, the soon to be queen, as they form alliances against new adversaries. Evacuations urged in Hawaii as lava flow advances
Authorities urged people in Hawaii Wednesday to evacuate an area at risk of being cut off by a flood of lava from the erupting Kilauea volcano. “Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that lava from several fissures continues to advance toward the Kapoho area,” a Civil Defense message said, referencing an area that was devastated during a 1960 eruption. “Residents of Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland are ad-
vised to evacuate. You are at risk of being isolated due to possible lava inundation,” the message added. Authorities had earlier advised that lava flow from Fissure 8 had blocked a major highway and caused an electricity blackout, and recommended evacuations of
other nearby areas as telephone communications were cut. Meanwhile, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter at Kilauea itself was recorded on Wednesday at 11:00 am (0000 GMT). Although it was felt strongly in the area, authorities dismissed the possibility of a tsunami. Local authorities could not confirm to AFP how many people would be evacuated. Around
2,000 residents have already abandoned their homes as a result of the eruption, which has destroyed 71 houses so far. The lava has engulfed an area of approximately 9.5 square kilometers, with the majority ending up in the ocean, creating so-called “laze” -- acid fumes created when lava meets water. Kilauea is one of five volcanoes on Hawaii’s Big Island. Scientists believe that volca-
