Lorenzo wins Catalunya home MotoGP duel

Jorge Lorenzo has extended his advantage at the head of the MotoGP World Championship standings with victory in front of his home fans at Catalunya. The Factory Yamaha star won his third race from five starts after a near race-long duel with fellow home hero Dani Pedrosa. The fast starting Repsol Honda rider threaded his way through from the second row to lead into turn one. Lorenzo’s team-mate Ben Spies then briefly passed Pedrosa, only to run wide and fall after clipping the grass. Lorenzo made no such mistake when he outbraked Pedrosa into turn one on lap 4 of 25, but Pedrosa - seeking his first win - stuck with Lorenzo and slipstreamed back ahead just before the

halfway stage. Pedrosa then looked to be handed a golden chance to claim his first win of the year when Lorenzo bobbled under braking and lost one-second to the RCV rider. But Lorenzo, using the softer rear tyre, was able to reel Pedrosa (on the harder rear) back in and made a victory pass when Pedrosa became unsettled by a wheelie on the back straight with six laps to go.

A delighted Andrea Dovizioso took his first podium as a Yamaha rider with a confident third place for the Monster Tech 3 team. The Italian occupied the position for much of the race - then held off a charging Casey Stoner on the final lap. Perhaps due to the cooler conditions, pole sitter and reigning champion Stoner was unable to run at the front and spent much of the race fending of Dovizioso’s team-mate Cal Crutchlow, before his late burst. Chinese tourists take over Japanese position

DENPASAR — Chinese tourist visit to Bali continues to show off a positive number. Based on the data of the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the arrival of tourists from the Ginseng Country replaced the position of Japan amounting to 20,369 people from the total amount reaching 225,488 people. Japanese market previously occupied the second position after Australia, but it tended to

Tens of chickens owned by people of Banjar Bale Agung, Yehembang Village, Mendoyo, last Friday (1/6) had sudden death which its characteristic was the same as the one last month. It is very worrying that bird flu have reached here for sure. One owner, Dewa Komang Suarsana, last Saturday (2/6) stated around 25 of his chickens died not only the hens but also some of the chicks and no symptoms were shown before their

death. It seemed in a day a seriously dead virus attacking the chickens in the area. It was expected one of them died at night time while staying on a durian tree branch in his house area as in the morning it was found dead then the others followed dying.

Receiving that report, bird flu management from Animal Husbandry Agency then went to location and took a number of samples for rapid test. It was stated the causer wasn’t the AI negative or bird flu, instead it was tetelo or grubug. (kmb26)

Price of various commodities in the city of Denpasar in general shows a decrease. Based on the data of Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of last May 2012, Denpasar experienced a deflation of 0.05 percent. This development was in contrast to the national rate where the inflation reached 0.07 percent. The Head of BPS Bali, Gde Suarsa, said that some commodities experiencing the price decline during May 2012 were like cayenne pepper, garlic, tuna and bricks. Meanwhile, the commodities living through an increase, among other things, were the air transport, house rents, papaya, snapper, sugar and chicken flesh. “This deflation rate happened due to decrease in the price showed by the index decrease in the group of goods and services, where the highest occurred in foodstuffs which reached 0.89 percent. Then, it was followed by clothing group reaching 0.16 percent as well as education, recreation and sports reaching 0.08 percent,” said Gde Suarsa in Denpasar, Friday (Jun 1). He said the increase in index happened to the group of processed food, cigarettes and tobacco reaching 0.50 percent. But, based on observation in May 2012, the prices of goods in the market have been back to normal,” he said. Suarsa added the rate of inflation based on calendar year of January-May 2012 amounted to 2.21 percent. Meanwhile, the rate of inflation based on year on year, in May 2012 against May 2011 amounted to 4.74 percent. In the meantime, Rector of the Undiknas University, Prof. Dr. Gede Sri Darma, assessed the rate of deflation would accelerate the economic growth and the higher purchasing power of the community would lead to the improvement of public welfare. Deflation happening in Denpasar, said Sri Darma, also closely related to the slowing down global economic condition and the impact of crisis in Europe. “The growth of global economy is slow, while the economy of Indonesia, especially Bali, grows higher resulting in deflation,” he said. According to him, such condition was a moment to carry out re-denomination to the currency. In a stable or better economic condition, corrective action for the designation of currency (not value of the currency) was required considering the designation of the Indonesian currency was too much. “If the designation of rupiah is simplified, like IDR 1,000 to IDR 1, for instance, so that USD 1 will be equivalent to IDR 9. OKLAHOMA CITY — When Lil Wayne turned down Kevin Durant’s invitation to watch the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals, he missed quite a show by the three-time scoring champion. Durant scored 18 of his 36 points in a scintillating final 7 minutes, Serge Ibaka added a career-high 26 points and the Thunder evened the series at two games apiece by beating the San Antonio Spurs 109-103 Saturday night. After seeing his team’s 15point lead dwindle to four, Durant took over midway through the fourth quarter by scoring all 16 of the Thunder’s points during a span of just over 5 minutes to keep the Spurs at bay. “I didn’t tell myself that I need to go score because what we were doing was working,” Durant said. “We were passing the ball and guys were making shots. ... I just wanted to stick with what we were doing, but it started to open up for me and I could see some lanes that gave me some opportunities to make some shots.” With All-Star teammate Russell Westbrook limited to seven points, Durant did almost all of the damage late to send the series back to San Antonio all square for Game 5

on Monday night. Durant, who finished behind only LeBron James in MVP voting, hit three straight jumpers, the last one coming after he bumped into Tony Parker in the lane to draw a foul and set up a three-point play. Then he attacked the rim for his next three baskets, getting to the line again when he was fouled on a layup off of James Harden’s alley-oop. Phelps won the medley in 4:15.88, almost a second ahead of Chase Kalisz, another of his North Baltimore Aquatics team-mates. Schmitt, the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, set a US Open and pool record with a time of 1:55.04 in the 200m free, eight-hundredths outside the American record she set in Rome in 2009. It was the second-fastest time in the world this year. “I feel like I have been on schedule this year, but there’s no way I expected to swim this fast at this meet,” Schmitt said. “I felt good coming in here, and I just gave it all I had. After this race, I know there’s a little more in the tank.” The 400m medley figured among Phelps’s eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, and he vowed then he wouldn’t swim the demanding event in top international competition again. England hopeful on Cahill and Terry

LONDON - England are hopeful defenders Gary Cahill and John Terry will be fit for Euro 2012 despite both suffering injuries in their final warm-up match against Belgium, the FA’s Trevor Brooking said on Sunday. Central defender Cahill went off with a suspected broken jaw in Saturday’s match at Wembley but Brooking, the director of football development, told BBC radio that the initial signs were promising. “Gary was certainly the initial main concern last night, so he went for a scan. At the moment the feedback is that we are hoping it’s not cracked,” he said. “I’m sure they will have a second look but at present we are hoping that’s going to be OK.”

A total of 35 personnel were involved in the medical team. Positive benefits of the free medical services could be thoroughly felt by the community. For example, during the examination most temple priests complained about fatigue or rheumatic disease. “Understandably, most of them have been old enough,” she said. As the party involved in the social activities, Sunadiati admitted to be very happy because she could participate in the devotional services or

Criminal Detective Unit of Denpasar Metro Police led by its Chief Unit, M. Arif Sugiarto, could reveal the case of car tire puncture that occurred during this time. Two suspects consisting of Muhammad Abdul Musori, 20, and Muhammad Dul, 35, were arrested in their respective boarding house on Wednesday (May 29). Based on confession of the suspects, they were specifically targeting cars of foreigners. Even, since eight months ago, both suspect admitted to have acted at 10 crime scenes. Chief Arif Sugiarto, Friday (Jun 1) explained the 10 crime scenes becoming the targets of the two suspects spread in several areas. For examples, they had acted for 3 times in Ubud, Gianyar, 2 times in Tabanan as well as 3 times in Badung and Denpasar. However, it was only confession of the suspects themselves. Meanwhile, for more details, the investigators were still developing the case. “Since we found the evidence of their crimes at crime scenes in North Kuta area, so the case will be handed over to the local police authority,” he explained. Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said he will reshuffle his cabinet on Monday in an attempt to secure opposition support for passing legislation to increase a tax on sales. Defence Minister Naoki Tanaka and Transport, Land and Infrastructure Minister Takeshi Maeda are widely expected to lose their jobs. The leading opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has called for both to be dismissed after they were censured by the upper house in April for a series of gaffes and for trying to influence a local election respectively. Farm Minister Michihiko Kano may also be replaced due to his alleged role in passing classified documents to a repatriated Chinese diplomat, whom police suspect of having engaged in spying activities, local media said. The prime minister told reporters Sunday about his plan for a cabinet reshuffle after failing to convince Ichiro Ozawa, leader of the largest intraparty group of Noda’s Democratic Party, of his

plan to hike the sales tax. “I told (Ozawa) that I will reshuffle the cabinet tomorrow,” he said. Noda met Ozawa on Sunday, for the second time in a week, to enlist support in enacting the tax bill during the current parliamentary session. But Ozawa, who has said economic growth should come before a tax hike, later told reporters he was “opposed to” Noda’s position, making it inevitable the premier will turn to the leading opposition for support. Noda has already told the secretary-general of his ruling Democratic Party of Japan to coordinate with the LDP so that the tax bill will be presented to a lower house vote before the session ends on June 21, local media reported. By passing the bill, Noda hopes to increase the current five percent sales tax rate in two stages -- to eight percent in April 2014 and to 10 percent in October 2015 -- to rein in the public debt of the rapidly ageing nation.

A drug that is already approved for prostate cancer has been shown to slow the spread of advanced forms of the disease for the first time, according to research released Saturday. Zytiga, made by Johnson and Johnson, is being tested in a randomized phase III trial involving 1,088 men with prostate cancer at 151 cancer facilities in North America, Europe and Australia. On average, participants in the study were diagnosed five years prior to entering the research but none had begun chemotherapy. Their cancer had metastasized and had become resistant to initial hormone therapy, but they were not showing major symptoms. According to interim results, the drug, abiraterone acetate, given in combination with prednisone, delayed the onset of pain and helped improve quality of life in patients

whose cancer had metastasized. In the Zytiga group, patients’ cancer did not worsen for 16 months, compared to 8.3 months in the group that did not get the drug, Ryan said. More analysis is needed to determine survival time. The full data set is expected in 2014. “This drug extended lives and gave patients more time when they weren’t experiencing significant pain from the disease,” said Charles Ryan, an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of California San Francisco Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. “It appears that this medication may lay a foundation for the use of this drug at an earlier stage of prostate cancer, and its benefits may be able to be delivered to a much wider population of patients as a result.” The research was to be released at the 48th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

At last year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Nintendo captured most of the spotlight by unveiling the Wii’s successor, a highdefinition console called the Wii U that utilizes a tablet-like touchscreen controller. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

HAVANA - Cuban President Raul Castro turns 81 on Sunday, another year on in his race against time to reform Cuba’s economy and try to assure the survival of communism after he and his elderly colleagues are gone. Their task, he has said, is to correct mistakes made during their 53 years of leadership, which will require “days and years of work” that he intends to finish. “The generation that made the (Cuban) revolution has had the historic privilege, few times seen, of being able to direct the rectification of errors they themselves committed,” he told a Communist Party conference in January. “Despite the fact that we are not so young, we don’t plan to waste this last opportunity.” Raul Castro’s No. 2, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura is 81 and his No. 3, Ramiro Valdes is 80. Older brother Fidel Castro, who led Cuba for 49 years before age and infirmity forced him to leave office, is 85 and still a behind-the-scenes player. The average life expectancy for a Cuban male is about 76 years. President Castro has said his health is good and he feels young, plus there is a history of longevity in his family. His sister Angela died in February at the age of 88 and his eldest brother Ramon is 87.

If he is worried about time, Raul Castro does not let on publicly. He has fretted publicly about not having groomed younger leaders to succeed the current group, but there are no obvious candidates waiting the wings. He has said on several occasions that the remaking of Cuba’s economy will be done “without hurry, but without pause” so that the mistakes of the past are not compounded by more mistakes. Many people think he needs to move faster, regardless of his age. Since officially succeeding older brother Fidel Castro in 2008, he has launched reforms to encourage private initiative and reduce the role of the state, which controls 90 percent of the economy. cent of the workforce, from the government’s payrolls. He has allowed Cubans to buy and sell cars and homes, privileges denied to them for five decades. But there are questions about whether President Castro is doing enough to modernize the struggling Soviet-style economy and accomplish his goal of saving the communist system put in place after the 1959 revolution. The Communist Party affirmed at a congress in 2011 that central economic planning would continue and the accumulation of property not allowed. Many people think Cuba needs to open up its economy in the style of fellow communist-led countries China and Vietnam. “The challenge for Raul Castro and the leadership of the Communist Party continues to be the orderly implementation of a transition to a mixed economy and a society open and integrated to the world,” said Cuba expert Arturo Lopez-Levy at the University of Denver.

“Based on the national target of 510,000 people, up to May Bali has just achieved 72,000. The existing potential is still widely open. “Big Four” to audit Spain’s banking sector

MADRID - Spain has picked the “Big Four” accounting firms KPMG, PwC, Deloitte and Ernst & Young to carry a full, individual audit of its ailing banks, a source with knowledge of the decision told Reuters on Saturday. The review, which should take a few months, will complement an ongoing exercise to stress test Spain’s banking sector by consultors Oliver Wyman and Roland Berger, whose first results are expected around mid-June. “I can confirm (the names),” the source said. Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Saturday said his government would have a clear view of how much money will be needed to recapitalize troubled lenders by the end of June. He also said the government would make clear by then how it intends to inject the money. But sales could stumble in June as people weigh troubling headlines, like Friday’s report that U.S. unemployment rose for the first time in 11 months. Car sales usually hew closely to the performance of the stock market and to consumer confidence numbers. But in May, they were strong, even though confidence was wobbly and the stock market had its worst month in two years. “We should have had a disastrous new vehicle sales month, but consumers are still interested in the new products,” said Jesse Toprak, vice president of market intelligence for the car buying site TrueCar.com. “This was an anomaly.” Toprak expects sales to slow somewhat this summer before picking up again at the end of the year as the economy improves and the presidential election ends political uncertainty. May sales totaled 1.3 million cars and trucks, up 26 percent from the same month a year earlier. It was the best May for the industry since 2008. Toyota led sales increases with an 87

percent rise from a year earlier, while Honda saw a 48-percent jump. In May 2011, both companies ran short of cars and trucks after the earthquake in Japan crippled their factories. But their showrooms are full again, and they’re rapidly gaining back the market share that they lost to competitors such as Hyundai and GM. Sales of the Toyota Prius hybrid tripled from a year ago, while Honda Civic sales were up 80 percent. Chrysler reported a 30 percent increase, followed by Volkswagen at 28 percent and Nissan at 21 percent. Ford and Hyundai both saw gains of 13 percent. General Motors Co. was up 11 percent. Pickup truck sales were particularly strong last month. GM, Ford and Chrysler all reported sales rose more than 20 percent. Ford says demand for trucks has followed an increase in new home construction since the start of this year. SHANGHAI - Weak manufacturing activity in China and dismal growth data from India have underscored Asia’s vulnerability to the European turmoil and sparked fresh calls for government intervention. Asia was long considered a global bright spot, even a haven from Europe’s deepening crisis and the weak US recovery. But the continent is starting to feel the heat as overseas markets deteriorate. World Trade Organization chief Pascal Lamy said on Thursday that the region was increasingly “interconnected with the rest of the planet and I don’t think this relative immunity will be forever”. “I would expect, given what is happening in other parts of the world economy, this region to be more affected than it has been so far,” he said. Lamy’s fears were borne out within hours as the disappointing data stoked calls for China’s and India’s governments to kick-start their economies to escape hard landings, which could worsen the already fragile global outlook. “China’s economic slowdown is more severe than expected. Export orders are continuing to fall, which is definitely related to Europe’s debt crisis,” said Liao Qun, chief economist for Citic Bank International in Hong Kong. “Uncertainty in Europe is high. China

needs to move faster and more aggressively to speed up loosening of its monetary and fiscal policies.” China’s official purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for manufacturing indicated a sharperthan-expected slowdown in May, while separate PMI data released by British bank HSBC showed a contraction for the same month. The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban subvillage close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim. The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting

to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency. Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don’t produce bad smells because of the perfumed

scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means ‘nice smell’. The name of Terunyan was also derived from these two words. The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption.

Such events have been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion... You can visit both the village of Trunyan and the Kuban cemetery by chartered boat from Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boat trips are now blatant tourist traps, as touts and guides strongly urge you to donate your cash to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. These touts ruin an otherwise fascinating experience.

Indonesian maids arrive in Malaysia after ban: report Agence France-Presse

KUALA LUMPUR - Indonesia has resumed sending maids to work in Malaysia three years after a ban was enforced because of numerous abuse cases, but fewer than a third of them had arrived, a report said Sunday. Indonesia, the main provider of domestic workers for Malaysia, announced last December it would lift the ban after the two countries agreed to better protect maids, including allowing them one day off per week.

The ban was imposed by Jakarta in June 2009 after numerous abuse cases and has been a sore point in relations between the two Southeast Asian neighbours. A Malaysian labour recruitment official said while the number that

arrived four days ago was small, it was “better than nothing.” “We managed to bring only 29 maids as many had backed out because of the bureaucracy in the Indonesian recruitment system,” Jeffrey Foo, president of the Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies was quoted as saying by the New Sunday Times newspaper. BANDA ACEH - Three critically-endangered Sumatran elephants have been found dead in an oil palm plantation in western Indonesia and are believed to have been poisoned, an NGO said Saturday. Villagers found the dead animals on Thursday in a government-owned oil palm plantation in the eastern part of Aceh province. They were estimated to be four and five years old, local environmental group Fakta said. “We suspected that they died after consuming bars of soap laced with poison we found near the carcass,” the group’s chief Rabono Wiranata told AFP. “It seems that the elephants have died around one week,” he said. The animals are usually either killed by villagers, who regard the beasts as pests that destroy their plantations, or by poachers for their tusks. Early last month, two other Sumatran elephants were found dead in the west of the province. There are fewer than 3,000 Sumatran elephants remaining in the wild, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, marking a 50 percent drop in numbers since 1985. WWF changed the Sumatran elephant’s status from “endangered” to “critically endangered” in January, largely due to severe habitat loss driven by oil palm and paper plantations. Conflicts between humans and animals are increasing as people encroach on wildlife habitats in Indonesia, an archipelago with some of the world’s largest remaining tropical forests.

Officials said earlier that the cocaine found in Sandiford’s bag had a street value of more than 23 billion rupiah ($2.5 million), an amount large enough to warrant a maximum sentence of death by firing squad.

INGREDIENTS: 1 whole duck, weigh about 2 kg (4 ½ lb) 18 shallots, peeled, cut in half, and sliced 6 cloves garlic, peeled, cut in half, & sliced 3 stalks lemon grass, finely sliced 5 fragrant lime leaves, finely sliced 6 candlenuts, chopped 5 cm (2 in), ginger, peeled and chopped 8 cm (3in) fresh turmeric, peeled, chopped 8 cm (3in) kencur root, peeled, chopped 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed 5 bird’s-eye chilies, slices 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed 2 tsp dried shrimp paste, roasted and coarsely crushed 1½ tbsp salt 3 tbsp oil Banana leaves, greaseproof paper or aluminum foil for wrapping PREPARATION: Wipe the duck dry and set aside. Combine all ingredients except banana leafs in a bowl and mix well. Rub the duck outside with this mixture and fill the center of the duck with the remainder. Close open duck with satay skewer. Wrap in several layers of banana leaves, greaseproof paper or foil and steam for 50 minutes. Transfer duck to a moderate oven and bake at 180o C (350o F) for 30 minutes. Remove banana leaves, cut duck meat up in small pieces and serve with stuffing. When cooked, the meat should be so tender that it falls off the bones.
