Kanye West sparks new outrage in calling slavery ‘choice’ NEW YORK - Rapper Kanye West, on the receiving end of criticism in the music world after backing President Donald Trump, sparked fresh outrage Tuesday when he called slavery “a choice.” The rapper, never shy about expressing himself, made the comments in passing during one of two free-flowing interviews he gave as he promotes two upcoming albums. “You hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years? That sounds like a choice,” West told TMZ Live, the broadcast wing of the celebrity gossip site. West elaborated little on his statement but appeared to be drawing a parallel to how he is presumed to hold certain views as an African American artist. “We’re mentally in prison. I like the word ‘prison’ because slavery is too direct to the idea of blacks. Like Holocaust is Jews, slavery is blacks,” West said. West’s remarks immediately sparked an uproar on Twitter, his favorite medium, and he was taken to task live by a TMZ employee who said he was “appalled.” The 40-year-old rapper, designer and husband of reality television star Kim Kardashian re-emerged last month after a year-long absence that followed a purported mental breakdown. He enraged many fellow artists -- but was embraced by conservative commentators -- as he
praised Trump, who has since cited the rapper’s words as evidence of minority support. In a separate interview with radio host Charlamagne tha God, West said he had not followed Trump’s policies but, “When I see an outsider infiltrate, I connect with that.” West -- who in 2005 made headlines by saying that then president George W. Bush “doesn’t care about black people” -- is one of the few prominent African Americans to support Trump. The president built his political career by promoting unfounded conspiracy theories about his predecessor Barack Obama’s birthplace and has been embroiled in a number of racial controversies since taking office. Speaking to Charlamagne tha God, West said he was upset that Obama invited other rappers to the White House such as Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z. Obama, in off-record small talk with a reporter in 2009 that leaked, called West a “jackass” after the rapper disrupted the MTV Video Music Awards to say that Taylor Swift did not deserve her prize. “You know, he never called me to apologize,” West said, explaining that Obama had met him and his mother before being elected president. “The same person who sat down with me and my mom, I think should have communicated with me directly.” (afp)
Zuckerberg unveils plans for Facebook dating service
NEW YORK - Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday the world’s largest social network will soon include a new dating feature -- while vowing to make privacy protection its top priority in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Zuckerberg unveiled the plans as he addressed Facebook’s annual F8 developers conference in San Jose, California -- emphasizing that the focus would be on helping people find longterm partners. “This is going to be for building real, long-term relationships, not just hookups,” Zuckerberg said in presenting the new feature, noting that one in three marriages in the United States start online -- and that some 200 million Facebook users identify as being single. Under the new feature, users will be able to create a separate “dating” profile not visible to their network of friends, with potential matches recommended based on dating preferences, points in common and mutual acquaintances. It will be free of charge, in line with Facebook’s core offering. The announcement sent shares in the online dating giant Match.com tumbling, finishing the formal trading day down 22 percent. The 33-year-old CEO also said the dating offer was built from the ground up with privacy and safety in mind, as he underscored the firm’s commitment to boosting privacy protections. Facebook’s closely-watched developer conference comes as the giant faces intense global scrutiny over the mass harvesting of personal data by Cambridge Analytica, a British political consultancy that worked for Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign. Belly of the bull: Bali’s Hindu cremations for peace in the afterlife
Flames engulf a wooden bull with the body of an elderly Balinese man inside its belly, an elaborate cremation that many on the mostly Hindu island see as crucial for peace in the afterlife. Following the blaze, the 81-year-old’s ashes are spread on a large piece of fabric dressed with flowers. Villagers in traditional sarongs march to a river where the remains are released into the gurgling water. Called Ngaben, the ceremony is intended to set free a person’s soul so it can enter a higher realm where it will be reborn or liberated from evil spirits. In the village of Tabanan, hundreds of friends and
relatives came together to witness the cremations of two elderly cousins at the end of a days-long ritual. A band plays traditional music with prayers as the bodies are washed and dressed in colourful
attire. The coffins are paraded through town so people can say goodbye, and also to confuse evil spirits that might want to disturb the solemn ceremony. Relatives come together to pre-
pare offerings of flowers, money, fruit and holy water to be placed around the coffins, which are later moved to the belly of the four-metre (13-foot) tall wooden animal. Cows are sacred throughout Hinduism, the religion practised by most of Bali’s residents. But Ngaben is distinctive to this Indonesian island. “To us Balinese, there has to be Ngaben,” said I Gusti Putu Artayasa, the son of one of the de-

Hundreds of servants do mesiat sampian at Samuan Tiga Temple
GIANYAR - Three days after the peak of Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh ritual at Samuan Tiga Temple, Bedulu, the tradition of siat sampian (sampian war) using a series of young coconut leaf between parekan (male servants) and permas (female servants) was held on Wednesday afternoon (May 2).
Hundreds of parekan and dozens of permas throw each other and hit by using pre-prepared young coconut leaf arrangement. This tradition symbolizes the fighting against adharma or evil witnessed by thousands of pilgrims and even foreign tourists that looked to participate in perpetuating the tradition. As a series of piodalan or temple anniversary, the procession of siat sampian is commenced with nampyog where permas goes
around in the middle courtyard of the temple hand in hand. All the permas walk while dancing with simple movements. After this procession, it is resumed with another procession known as ngober nyambung. In this procession, the waist of permas is tied around with a white scarf. Then, this scarf is flown continuously connected by the permas in the next row. This procession is followed by maombak-bangbakan where the parekan holds each other while walking around the temple yard. All the parekan players hold each other while moving around the temple for three times accompanied with shouts. Similarly, they try to hold the sacred buildings in the temple. This procession is accompanied with gamelan music to increase the spirit of parekan and permas when initiating the siat sampian. At the peak, all the parekan players mutually throw the
sampian prepared. After that, they mutually hit and throw it as a symbol of war by using the leaf for about 15 minutes. “After the siat sampian, all the servants are taking a bath in the beji or sacred spring symbolizing as self-purification,” said Chairman of Samuan Tiga Ritual Committee, Wayan Patera. According to him, siat sampian can only be followed by servants and this tradition is interpreted as purification of macrocosm and microcosm visualized through the battle between two different powers namely good and evil and the winning in the end is the truth. Selection of the sampian for siat sampian, according to Patera, has symbolic meaning where the end of sampian represents the dangsil presented by the servants. “In addition, the sampian symbolizes the weapon belonging to Lord Vishnu used to combat adharma or evil from earth,” he said. NEGARA - Two villages in Jembrana are now included in the new red zone due to two rabies-positive cases have been found. As information from the Veterinary Health and Community Health Division at the Jembrana Agriculture and Food Agency, the two cases of rabies-positive bite were found in Melaya subdistrict, namely at Ambyar Sari hamlet, Belimbing Sari and Melaya Pasar hamlet, Melaya. The rabies carrier animals (HPR) in the positive bite sourced from Balinese local dogs that are let roam around by the owner. Division Head of Veterinary Health and Community Health, Anak Agung Ngurah Mahadikara Sadhaka, confirmed the two positive bites at the two villages in Melaya sub-district. The first bite case occurred on Monday (Apr. 23) at Ambyar Sari hamlet, Belimbing Sari, Melaya, experienced by Bapang Kiswanto, 64. The victim suffered two bites on the thigh and right calf due to being bitten by a dog belonging to his neighbor due to provocation. Although there are no symptoms of
rabies, because of feeling worried, the dog owner, Yokanan Samianto, finally asked the officer of the Veterinary Health and Community Health nearby to take dog’s brain sample on Tuesday (Apr. 24). After the brain samples of the male dog was sent to the Denpasar Veterinary Laboratory (BB Vet), the results of the laboratory test issued on Friday (Apr. 27) declared if the dog is positive for rabies. Later, another dog bite case occurred on Wednesday (Apr. 26). It happened to Ni Kadek Dwi Darmayanti, 7. She had bites on her right calf after playing with her neighbor’s 4-month-old Balinese puppy. Four days after biting this second grade elementary school student, this female puppy belonging to Putu Sudiarta was suddenly dying. After being reported, the officer then took its brain sample on Sunday (Apr. 29). Based on the results of the laboratory test on the dog’s brain samples received from the Denpasar Veterinary Laboratory on Monday (Apr. 30), the puppy is declared positive for rabies.
Mahadikara said the two bite cases were triggered by provocations and the dogs while biting did not show symptoms of rabies-leading changes. The dog is also indeed let roam around by the owner so it easily interacts with other dogs. According to him, the bite victim has received treatment from the Rabies Center at Melaya I public health center, while the rabies carrier animal has been taken its brain samples. In accordance with the laboratory test, both samples were declared positive. Besides, his agency will perform selective and targeted elimination. For the elimination, his agency will do it at each hamlet area because dog strength radius is maximally 10 km. The elimination has been carried out at Ambyarsari hamlet on Tuesday (May 1) and Melaya Pasar on Wednesday (May 2). Meanwhile, the rabies transmission is still worrying. It is proved by the existence of a new red zone. He admitted the mass vaccination by Bali provincial government having been held since last April only tar-
geted 7 red zone villages of the 9 red zone villages in Jembrana with the availability of 10,000 doses of state budget aid vaccine. Two of the seven villages are in Melaya namely Tukadaya village spent 1,143 doses of vaccine and Warnasari village spent 365 doses of vaccine. The others are one village in Jembrana sub-district namely Batuagung village spending 1,157 doses of vaccine, two villages in Mendoyo subdistrict namely Penyaringan village spending 352 doses of vaccine and Yeh Sumbul village spending 671 doses as well as two villages in Pekutatan sub-district, namely Gumbrih village spending 651 doses and Pangyangan village spending 352 doses of vaccine. Originally his agency already proposed the vaccination for the nine villages but so far the provincial government can only realize the seven villages. Meanwhile, two other villages excluded in the target are Asahduren village, Pekutatan and Dauh Waru village, Jembrana where the new case of positive bites only occurred in 2017. (kmb)

Tourism players accuse government of ignoring Amed
AMLAPURA — Since Mount Agung began to erupt and returned to calm down, Bali tourism becomes very vulnerable. It is without exception for one of the tourism icons of Karangasem, namely Amed. Although Mount Agung has begun to calm down, tourist visits to Amed has not returned normal. It is aggravated by classic problems having not been handled until now, namely the problem of damaged roads, street lighting to minimum public facilities. Related to the Mount Agung eruption, tourism players considered the effort to restore Amed’s glory is minimal. “As it happens, so far we in Amed have done everything independently. Thankfully, there have been guests coming in, but still far from normal condition,” said one of the Amed tourism players, Ketut Dayuh, when met at Amed, Abang subdistrict recently. This Operations Manager of Aryaamed Resort asserted that hotel occupancy rate remains low, only about 20 percent. The majority of incoming tourists are reluctant to stay. They mostly come on weekends to see the beauty of the underwater world becoming the icon of Amed in the morning and then in the afternoon returned to their accommodation in Denpasar. Currently, Amed tourism players are waiting for the peak moment of the tourist visit in August. If it remains as quiet as it is today, the future of Amed needs to be thought through.
Dayuh added, when entering August the occupancy rate of tourist accommodation in Amed can usually reach 80 percent. However, considering the vulnerability of tourism due to the activities of Mount Agung often blowing volcanic ashes, it remains worried about the future of Amed. “Since the past, Amed has grown on its own and rarely got promotion from the government, let alone the support of public facilities. The road is narrow and cannot be passed through by large buses. The conditions are damaged and there are no street lighting. Please make Amed look no longer scary,” said Dayuh. The C-130 “Hercules” cargo plane from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard crashed around 11:30 am (1530 GMT) near the Savannah airport. Footage of the crash showed it falling from the sky then exploding in a fireball. Officials at first said five crewmembers were killed, but it later emerged that other people were also on board. “We’ve confirmed nine people, consisting of five crewmembers and four additional passengers” were on board, Puerto Rico National Guard spokesman Major Paul Dahlen said. He said the four others were also members of the military. Dahlen could not immediately confirm all nine had died, but said images of the crash spoke for
themselves. Photographs on Twitter showed the charred wreckage of a plane engulfed in flames and billowing black smoke. US President Donald Trump tweeted he had been briefed on the incident, and offered his condolences to the families of the victims. Dahlen said the plane was probably more than 50 years old and was headed to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance Regeneration Group at Davis Monthan Air Force Base -- also known as a boneyard for old planes. The overnight storm ravaged Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan states and the death toll was expected to rise, officials said. There were 46 confirmed deaths in Uttar Pradesh in the north and 31 in the desert state of Rajasthan to the west. The Agra district of Uttar Pradesh was one of the worst hit with more than 30 people killed. The Taj Mahal is in Agra city but officials said the monument escaped damage. Most of the victims were hit by falling walls, trees and electric pylons and houses that collapsed. “We can confirm at least 46 deaths, 41 injuries from around 40 of the state’s 75 districts,” T.P. Gupta of the Uttar Pradesh relief commissioner’s office told AFP. He said there were 36 deaths in Agra district. Officials said 157 animals were also killed across the state. German sporting goods firm Adidas said Thursday efficiency savings had powered a leap in profits in the first quarter, staying confident of hitting its full-year targets as the World Cup looms. Net profit attributable to shareholders surged 18.7 percent yearon-year, to 540 million euros ($647 million) between January and March. Operating or underlying profit increased 17.1 percent to 746 million euros, far outpacing revenue growth of just 1.9 percent, to 5.5 billion. “We managed to grow the bottom line significantly faster” than revenues, chief executive Kasper Rorsted highlighted, “while continuing to invest into creating brand desire.” The group added that adjusting for currency effects, sales had increased around 10 percent, powered by Adidas’ fashion-oriented Originals line as well as

Trump reimbursed lawyer for payment to porn star: Giuliani
WASHINGTON - Donald Trump reimbursed his long-time lawyer Michael Cohen for a $130,000 payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani said Wednesday, appearing to contradict the president’s own statements on the matter. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims she had an affair with Trump in 2006 and was paid the sum as part of a “hush agreement.” “They funneled it through a law firm and the president repaid it,” Giuliani, who recently joined Trump’s legal team, told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “That was money that was paid by his lawyer, the way I would do, out of his law firm funds or whatever funds, it doesn’t matter. The president reimbursed that over a period of several months,” Giuliani said. He added that the payment did not represent a campaign financing violation because it was “not campaign money.” The sum was wired to Daniels just days before the November 2016 presidential election, and there had been suggestions Cohen could have fallen foul of campaign finance laws because it represented a contribu-
tion aimed at preventing negative press from arising. Speaking to The New York Times shortly after the television appearance, Giuliani said he had spoken with Trump before and after talking to Fox -- and that the president and his other lawyers knew what the former New York mayor would say. Giuliani told the paper he had documentation proving Trump had reimbursed the sum, which he said “removes the campaign finance violation” prospect. “Some time after the campaign is over, they set up a reimbursement, $35,000 a month, out of his personal family account,” Giuliani told the Times, adding that Trump gave Cohen between $460,000 and $470,000 via this method to repay the sum to the porn star as well as “incidental expenses.” Trump had previously denied all knowledge of the payment to Daniels, before admitting last week that Cohen struck a “deal” with the porn star on his behalf. Asked by reporters on Air Force One earlier this month about the deal, Trump said: “You’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael is my attorney. You’ll have to ask Michael,” he said. Cambridge Analytica to close after Facebook data scandal
LONDON - Cambridge Analytica, the British marketing analytics firm, announced Wednesday that it was closing and would file for insolvency in Britain and the United States after failing to recover from the Facebook data scandal. The decision follows weeks of intense pressure on the company, hired by Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, after allegations emerged it may have hijacked up to 87 million Facebook users’ data. It claimed it has been “vilified” by the “numerous unfounded accusations” which torpedoed its business and left the firm with “no realistic alternative” but to go into administration. “Despite Cambridge Analytica’s unwavering confidence that its employees have acted ethically and lawfully... the siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the company’s customers and suppliers,” it said in a statement. “As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business.” An affiliate of British firm Strategic Communication Laboratories (SCL), CA has offices in London, New York, Washington, as well as Brazil and Malaysia. It drew attention after former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon reportedly once sat on its board and was bankrolled to the tune of $15 million (12.5 million euros) by US billionaire and Republican donor Robert Mercer. It first became embroiled in scandal in March when Canadian whistleblower Christopher Wylie, a 28-year-old former analyst for the firm, revealed it had created psychological profiles of tens of millions of Facebook users via a personality prediction app.
The revelations instantly reverberated around the world, wiping billions from the social media giant’s market value and drawing scrutiny from politicians and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic. To make matters worse for CA, CEO Alexander Nix was suspended within days after he was filmed by undercover reporters bragging about ways to win political campaigns, including through blackmail and honey traps. As the crisis intensified, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg was forced to apologise to its billions of users amid a small but growing exodus from the site. He eventually appeared before Congress for a two-day grilling by lawmakers, and has since vowed to overhaul the way the Facebook shares its users’ data. In Britain, regulators ratcheted up a probe into CA, raiding its London offices, and later extending the investigation to 30 organisations, including Facebook. A second whistleblower from the firm also emerged at a parliamentary hearing in April claiming Britons’ personal data may have been misused by a pro-Brexit campaign ahead of the 2016 referendum in which Britain voted to leave the European Union. Earlier this month, Facebook upped its count of the number of people impacted, admitting that up to 87 million users may have had their data harvested. CA has vehemently denied exploiting that data for Trump’s election campaign, claiming it deleted data obtained in breach of the social network’s terms of service. At a London press conference last week a CA spokesman claimed the company was “no Bond villain” and had broken no laws. (afp)

JAKARTA - The value of bilateral trade between Indonesia and Azerbaijan is recorded as the second largest among the Commonwealth of Independent States or those located in Eurasia, or Central and North Asia. “In the last five years, the value of trade between Indonesia and Azerbaijan has reached US$7.5 billion,” Azerbaijani Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Indonesia Tamerlan Garayev remarked at the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic here on Wednesday (May 2). The ambassador stated that high-level political relations between both nations are based on the principles of friendship, mutual respect, and cooperation. “We are diversifying our bilateral cooperation, and it is already rapidly developing in non-traditional fields, such as public service delivery. Azerbaijan is happy to
share its experiences of the ASAN service system with Indonesian brothers,” Ambassador Garayev noted. ASAN, or Azerbaijan Service and Assessment Network, is a state agency of government services for the citizens of Azerbaijan. The system makes it easy for people to access services using modern technology. “We are very happy and satisfied with the current level of bilateral relationship and eager to explore more opportunities in the years to come,” Ambassador Garayev emphasized. Bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Azerbaijan was established on December 28, 1991, marked by the recognition of the independence of the Azerbaijan Republic. The Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was established on May 28, 1918. In 1920, the country fell in the Bolsheviks invasion and later became a part of the Soviet Union. JERUSALEM - Chris Froome is trying to put his tumultuous Giro d’Italia preparations behind him as he focuses on making history. Froome has won the last two Grand Tours -- the Vuelta a Espana in September and the Tour de France before that in July. Should he win the Giro this month, he would become only the third man -- and first in 35 years -- to hold all three Grand Tour titles at the same time. The other two -- Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault -- are amongst the sport’s greats having both won the Tour de France a record five times. Four-time winner Froome, 32, would like to try to emulate them in July, should he be allowed to race, but for now it is the Giro occupying his thoughts. “That’s a huge motivation for me, that was part of my decisionmaking process in deciding to be here, in that I won the Tour last year and the Vuelta,” he said when asked about the cycling Grand Tour grand slam. “I can’t remember the last time a rider won three Grand Tours consecutively like that -- it’s a huge point for me.” His adverse analytical finding from a doping test during the Vuelta last year hangs heavy on his shoulders, though, with much of the talk leading up to the Giro centred on whether or not he should even be participating. The sport’s world governing body, the UCI’s rules do not preclude him from continuing to race as he fights to clear his name and avoid a doping ban. But the UCI’s own president, David Lappartient has said he should withdraw from professional racing pending a solution to his case. Liverpool reach Champions League final after nervy night in Rome
Liverpool held off a spirited Roma fightback to reach the Champions League final 7-6 on aggregate despite losing a hectic semi-final second leg in Rome on Wednesday. Jurgen Klopp’s side will play defending champions Real Madrid in Kiev on May 26 after qualifying for their eighth European Cup final and first since 2007. The 4-2 defeat on the night in the Italian capital tested Liverpool’s nerves but they rarely looked in danger of losing the tie. First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum put Liverpool in control as Roma conceded their first goals in the Stadio Olimpico during this European campaign. Despite Radja Nainggolan bagging two goals for Roma in the final eight minutes -- the second from the penalty spot -- there was to be no second miracle comeback for the Italians after last month’s 3-0 win over Barcelona in Rome. It was another bitter defeat for Roma who lost the 1984 European Cup final to Liverpool on penalties in the same stadium. “It’s the first time we weren’t realy as good as we can be. We needed luck and that is what we got,” said Klopp. “7-6 on aggregate sounds crazy because it is crazy. We came in as qualifiers and now we’re in the final and will go to Kiev. “Roma are strong, we had them where we wanted, as they were wild, ran the risks and we went 2-1 up. All good. “But then we didn’t do enough on the counter, we didn’t use the space that they
gave us and we lost the game after going 1-0 up already.” Klopp said he was confident Liverpool could threaten 12-time winners Madrid in the final. “We have to play much better than tonight, the good news is we can play much better than tonight,” he said. Roma threatened early with Alessandro Florenzi sending the ball wide in the opening minutes but the hosts paid for woeful defending, giving Klopp’s side space to gain an early advantage. Senegalese forward Mane got Liverpool off to a dream start after just nine minutes to the horror of the home fans. A Nainggolan howler in midfield gave Roberto Firmino the opportunity to barge through, delivering the ball to an unmarked Mane who left Roma ‘keeper Alisson with no chance. Alisson denied Mane but from the resulting corner Dzeko’s attempt to clear fell to the waiting Dutchman and he made no mistake. Stephan El Shaarawy rattled the post on 35 minutes with Florenzi also firing wide, and Pellegrini showed how not to take a free-kick which was way off the mark. Dzeko broke through seven minutes into the second half with the equaliser after Karius cleared the ball straight into the path of the Bosnian who

And in a desperate scramble by the Italians in front of goal four minutes from time Nainggolan made up for his earlier blunders when he drilled a low shot into the bottom-right corner from a distance for his first ever Champions League goal. The Belgian midfielder added a second three minutes into injury time from a penalty awarded for a bitterly contested handball by substitute Ragnar Klavan, firing into the roof of the net. It was a dramatic finale for Eusebio di Francesco’s side but it was too little too late as they failed to reach their first final since 1984 but earned a standing ovation from the 62,000 crowd. “We have grown through this experience, but I have regrets because this team should have believed more in its chances, as I did and we could have had more goals and pushed Liverpool even more,” said Di Francesco. Liverpool will again leave Rome victorious after winning the European title twice, in 1977 as well as 1984, at the Stadio Olimpico. ‘It was just crazy’ - Klopp joy after Liverpool survive Roma thriller Jurgen Klopp saluted his Liverpool heroes as they survived a semi-final thriller against Roma to book a Champions League final showdown with Real Madrid. Klopp’s side emerged victorious from a goal-packed Champions League semi-final, winning 7-6 on aggregate despite losing the second leg 4-2 in Rome on Wednesday. Liverpool were in control at 2-1 up, but Roma scored three times after the interval, although their last goal came with virtually the final kick of a record-breaking tie. It was the highest scoring semi-final in the Champions League era and Reds boss Klopp admitted there was a little bit too much drama for his liking. “It was just crazy. I forgot the score! It was 7-6 right? Unbelievable!” Klopp said. “The game was wild. They took all the risks and we punished it with the counter-attack but then we gave away a goal. “We were a little too patient. We are usually much better, you know this. “It was the first semi-final for most of the boys so it’s normal to have to keep nerves in. “It was a little bit exciting, more exciting than I actually wanted.” Although Klopp would have preferred a less heart-stopping evening, he was adamant Liverpool’s place in the final was just reward for their superb 5-2 first-leg win. “We are deserved finalists 100 percent. You don’t come without

‘It was just crazy’ - Klopp joy after Liverpool survive Roma thriller Jurgen Klopp saluted his Liverpool heroes as they survived a semi-final thriller against Roma to book a Champions League final showdown with Real Madrid. Klopp’s side emerged victorious from a goal-packed Champions League semi-final, winning 7-6 on aggregate despite losing the second leg 4-2 in Rome on Wednesday. Liverpool were in control at 2-1 up, but Roma scored three times after the interval, although their last goal came with virtually the final kick of a record-breaking tie. It was the highest scoring semi-final in the Champions League era and Reds boss Klopp admitted there was a little bit too much drama for his liking. “It was just crazy. I forgot the score! It was 7-6 right? Unbelievable!” Klopp said. “The game was wild. They took all the risks and we punished it with the counter-attack but then we gave away a goal. “We were a little too patient. We are usually much better, you know this. “It was the first semi-final for most of the boys so it’s normal to have to keep nerves in. “It was a little bit exciting, more exciting than I actually wanted.” Although Klopp would have preferred a less heart-stopping evening, he was adamant Liverpool’s place in the final was just reward for their superb 5-2 first-leg win. “We are deserved finalists 100 percent. Desperate to fire up his players, Di Francesco had called for them to deliver “a copy and paste” of that astonishing performance. But Di Francesco had been exposed as tactically naive with his decision to go for all-out attack in the first leg and it was no different this time as Roma were in tatters before half-time. Roma were the only team not to concede a goal at home in the Champions League this season, yet within nine minutes Liverpool had torn through the hosts’ poorly organised defence. Throwing bodies forward far too soon, Roma were caught cold by Sadio Mane before more woeful defending allowed Wijnaldum to head Liverpool’s second. JERUSALEM - Chris Froome is trying to put his tumultuous Giro d’Italia preparations behind him as he focuses on making history. Froome has won the last two Grand Tours -- the Vuelta a Espana in September and the Tour de France before that in July. Should he win the Giro this month, he would become only the third man -- and first in 35 years -- to hold all three Grand Tour titles at the same time. The other two -- Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault -- are amongst the sport’s greats having both won the Tour de France a record five times. Four-time winner Froome, 32, would like to try to emulate them in July, should he be allowed to race, but for now it is the Giro occupying his thoughts. “That’s a huge motivation for me, that was part of my decisionmaking process in deciding to be here, in that I won the Tour last year and the Vuelta,” he said when asked about the cycling Grand Tour grand slam. “I can’t remember the last time a rider won three Grand Tours consecutively like that -- it’s a huge point for me.” His adverse analytical finding from a doping test during the Vuelta last year hangs heavy on his shoulders, though, with much of the talk leading up to the Giro centred on whether or not he should even be participating. The sport’s world governing body, the UCI’s rules do not preclude him from continuing to race as he fights to clear his name and avoid a doping ban. But the UCI’s own president, David Lappartient has said he should withdraw from professional racing pending a solution to his case. Trump reimbursed lawyer for payment to porn star: Giuliani
WASHINGTON - Donald Trump reimbursed his long-time lawyer Michael Cohen for a $130,000 payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani said Wednesday, appearing to contradict the president’s own statements on the matter. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims she had an affair with Trump in 2006 and was paid the sum as part of a “hush agreement.” “They funneled it through a law firm and the president repaid it,” Giuliani, who recently joined Trump’s legal team, told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “That was money that was paid by his lawyer, the way I would do, out of his law firm funds or whatever funds, it doesn’t matter. The president reimbursed that over a period of several months,” Giuliani said. He added that the payment did not represent a campaign financing violation because it was “not campaign money.” The sum was wired to Daniels just days before the November 2016 presidential election, and there had been suggestions Cohen could have fallen foul of campaign finance laws because it represented a contribu-
tion aimed at preventing negative press from arising. Speaking to The New York Times shortly after the television appearance, Giuliani said he had spoken with Trump before and after talking to Fox -- and that the president and his other lawyers knew what the former New York mayor would say. Giuliani told the paper he had documentation proving Trump had reimbursed the sum, which he said “removes the campaign finance violation” prospect. “Some time after the campaign is over, they set up a reimbursement, $35,000 a month, out of his personal family account,” Giuliani told the Times, adding that Trump gave Cohen between $460,000 and $470,000 via this method to repay the sum to the porn star as well as “incidental expenses.” Trump had previously denied all knowledge of the payment to Daniels, before admitting last week that Cohen struck a “deal” with the porn star on his behalf. Asked by reporters on Air Force One earlier this month about the deal, Trump said: “You’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael is my attorney. You’ll have to ask Michael,” he said. Pressed on whether he knew where Cohen got the money to make the payment, he said: “No, I don’t know. No.” (afp)

Cambridge Analytica to close after Facebook data scandal
LONDON - Cambridge Analytica, the British marketing analytics firm, announced Wednesday that it was closing and would file for insolvency in Britain and the United States after failing to recover from the Facebook data scandal. The decision follows weeks of intense pressure on the company, hired by Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, after allegations emerged it may have hijacked up to 87 million Facebook users’ data. It claimed it has been “vilified” by the “numerous unfounded accusations” which torpedoed its business and left the firm with “no realistic alternative” but to go into administration. “Despite Cambridge Analytica’s unwavering confidence that its employees have acted ethically and lawfully... the siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the company’s customers and suppliers,” it said in a statement. “As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business.” An affiliate of British firm Strategic Communication Laboratories (SCL), CA has offices in London, New York, Washington, as well as Brazil and Malaysia. It drew attention after former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon reportedly once sat on its board and was bankrolled to the tune of $15 million (12.5 million euros) by US billionaire and Republican donor Robert Mercer. It first became embroiled in scandal in March when Canadian whistleblower Christopher Wylie, a 28-year-old former analyst for the firm, revealed it had created psychological profiles of tens of millions of Facebook users via a personality prediction app.
The revelations instantly reverberated around the world, wiping billions from the social media giant’s market value and drawing scrutiny from politicians and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic. To make matters worse for CA, CEO Alexander Nix was suspended within days after he was filmed by undercover reporters bragging about ways to win political campaigns, including through blackmail and honey traps. As the crisis intensified, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg was forced to apologise to its billions of users amid a small but growing exodus from the site. He eventually appeared before Congress for a two-day grilling by lawmakers, and has since vowed to overhaul the way the Facebook shares its users’ data. In Britain, regulators ratcheted up a probe into CA, raiding its London offices, and later extending the investigation to 30 organisations, including Facebook. A second whistleblower from the firm also emerged at a parliamentary hearing in April claiming Britons’ personal data may have been misused by a pro-Brexit campaign ahead of the 2016 referendum in which Britain voted to leave the European Union. Earlier this month, Facebook upped its count of the number of people impacted, admitting that up to 87 million users may have had their data harvested. CA has vehemently denied exploiting that data for Trump’s election campaign, claiming it deleted data obtained in breach of the social network’s terms of service. At a London press conference last week a CA spokesman claimed the company was “no Bond villain” and had broken no laws. (afp)

JAKARTA - The value of bilateral trade between Indonesia and Azerbaijan is recorded as the second largest among the Commonwealth of Independent States or those located in Eurasia, or Central and North Asia. “In the last five years, the value of trade between Indonesia and Azerbaijan has reached US$7.5 billion,” Azerbaijani Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Indonesia Tamerlan Garayev remarked at the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic here on Wednesday (May 2). At least 154 dancers divided into 22 groups (seven dancers per group) danced in Pecangakan Square with Jegog gamelan accompaniment.

German sporting goods firm Adidas said Thursday efficiency savings had powered a leap in profits in the first quarter, staying confident of hitting its full-year targets as the World Cup looms. Net profit attributable to shareholders surged 18.7 percent yearon-year, to 540 million euros ($647 million) between January and March. Operating or underlying profit increased 17.1 percent to 746 million euros, far outpacing revenue growth of just 1.9 percent, to 5.5 billion. “We managed to grow the bottom line significantly faster” than revenues, chief executive Kasper Rorsted highlighted, “while continuing to invest into creating brand desire.” The group added that adjusting for currency effects, sales had increased around 10 percent, powered by Adidas’ fashion-oriented Originals line as well as

Tourism players accuse government of ignoring Amed
AMLAPURA — Since Mount Agung began to erupt and returned to calm down, Bali tourism becomes very vulnerable. It is without exception for one of the tourism icons of Karangasem, namely Amed. Although Mount Agung has begun to calm down, tourist visits to Amed has not returned normal. It is aggravated by classic problems having not been handled until now, namely the problem of damaged roads, street lighting to minimum public facilities. They mostly come on weekends to see the beauty of the underwater world becoming the icon of Amed in the morning and then in the afternoon returned to their accommodation in Denpasar. Currently, Amed tourism players are waiting for the peak moment of the tourist visit in August. If it remains as quiet as it is today, the future of Amed needs to be thought through.
Dayuh added, when entering August the occupancy rate of tourist accommodation in Amed can usually reach 80 percent. However, considering the vulnerability of tourism due to the activities of Mount Agung often blowing volcanic ashes, it remains worried about the future of Amed. “Since the past, Amed has grown on its own and rarely got promotion from the government, let alone the support of public facilities. The road is narrow and cannot be passed through by large buses. The conditions are damaged and there are no street lighting. Please make Amed look no longer scary,” said Dayuh. Other than promotional encouragement, Dayuh suggested that local government can play a role in public infrastructure, facilities and transportation. The C-130 “Hercules” cargo plane from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard crashed around 11:30 am (1530 GMT) near the Savannah airport. Footage of the crash showed it falling from the sky then exploding in a fireball. Officials at first said five crewmembers were killed, but it later emerged that other people were also on board. “We’ve confirmed nine people, consisting of five crewmembers and four additional passengers” were on board, Puerto Rico National Guard spokesman Major Paul Dahlen said. The overnight storm ravaged Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan states and the death toll was expected to rise, officials said. There were 46 confirmed deaths in Uttar Pradesh in the north and 31 in the desert state of Rajasthan to the west. The Agra district of Uttar Pradesh was one of the worst hit with more than 30 people killed. The Taj Mahal is in Agra city but officials said the monument escaped damage. Most of the victims were hit by falling walls, trees and electric pylons and houses that collapsed. “We can confirm at least 46 deaths, 41 injuries from around 40 of the state’s 75 districts,” T.P. Gupta of the Uttar Pradesh relief commissioner’s office told AFP. He said there were 36 deaths in Agra district. Officials said 157 animals were also killed across the state. GIANYAR - Three days after the peak of Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh ritual at Samuan Tiga Temple, Bedulu, the tradition of siat sampian (sampian war) using a series of young coconut leaf between parekan (male servants) and permas (female servants) was held on Wednesday afternoon (May 2).
Hundreds of parekan and dozens of permas throw each other and hit by using pre-prepared young coconut leaf arrangement. This tradition symbolizes the fighting against adharma or evil witnessed by thousands of pilgrims and even foreign tourists that looked to participate in perpetuating the tradition. As a series of piodalan or temple anniversary, the procession of siat sampian is commenced with nampyog where permas goes
around in the middle courtyard of the temple hand in hand. All the permas walk while dancing with simple movements. After this procession, it is resumed with another procession known as ngober nyambung. In this procession, the waist of permas is tied around with a white scarf. Then, this scarf is flown continuously connected by the permas in the next row. This procession is followed by maombak-bangbakan where the parekan holds each other while walking around the temple yard. All the parekan players hold each other while moving around the temple for three times accompanied with shouts. Similarly, they try to hold the sacred buildings in the temple. This procession is accompanied with gamelan music to increase the spirit of parekan and permas when initiating the siat sampian. At the peak, all the parekan players mutually throw the
sampian prepared. After that, they mutually hit and throw it as a symbol of war by using the leaf for about 15 minutes. “After the siat sampian, all the servants are taking a bath in the beji or sacred spring symbolizing as self-purification,” said Chairman of Samuan Tiga Ritual Committee, Wayan Patera. According to him, siat sampian can only be followed by servants and this tradition is interpreted as purification of macrocosm and microcosm visualized through the battle between two different powers namely good and evil and the winning in the end is the truth. Selection of the sampian for siat sampian, according to Patera, has symbolic meaning where the end of sampian represents the dangsil presented by the servants. “In addition, the sampian symbolizes the weapon belonging to Lord Vishnu used to combat adharma or evil from earth,” he said. NEGARA - Two villages in Jembrana are now included in the new red zone due to two rabies-positive cases have been found. As information from the Veterinary Health and Community Health Division at the Jembrana Agriculture and Food Agency, the two cases of rabies-positive bite were found in Melaya subdistrict, namely at Ambyar Sari hamlet, Belimbing Sari and Melaya Pasar hamlet, Melaya. The rabies carrier animals (HPR) in the positive bite sourced from Balinese local dogs that are let roam around by the owner. Division Head of Veterinary Health and Community Health, Anak Agung Ngurah Mahadikara Sadhaka, confirmed the two positive bites at the two villages in Melaya sub-district. The first bite case occurred on Monday (Apr. 23) at Ambyar Sari hamlet, Belimbing Sari, Melaya, experienced by Bapang Kiswanto, 64. The victim suffered two bites on the thigh and right calf due to being bitten by a dog belonging to his neighbor due to provocation. Although there are no symptoms of
rabies, because of feeling worried, the dog owner, Yokanan Samianto, finally asked the officer of the Veterinary Health and Community Health nearby to take dog’s brain sample on Tuesday (Apr. 24). After the brain samples of the male dog was sent to the Denpasar Veterinary Laboratory (BB Vet), the results of the laboratory test issued on Friday (Apr. 27) declared if the dog is positive for rabies. Later, another dog bite case occurred on Wednesday (Apr. 26). It happened to Ni Kadek Dwi Darmayanti, 7. She had bites on her right calf after playing with her neighbor’s 4-month-old Balinese puppy. Four days after biting this second grade elementary school student, this female puppy belonging to Putu Sudiarta was suddenly dying. After being reported, the officer then took its brain sample on Sunday (Apr. 29). Based on the results of the laboratory test on the dog’s brain samples received from the Denpasar Veterinary Laboratory on Monday (Apr. 30), the puppy is declared positive for rabies.
Mahadikara said the two bite cases were triggered by provocations and the dogs while biting did not show symptoms of rabies-leading changes. The dog is also indeed let roam around by the owner so it easily interacts with other dogs. According to him, the bite victim has received treatment from the Rabies Center at Melaya I public health center, while the rabies carrier animal has been taken its brain samples. In accordance with the laboratory test, both samples were declared positive. Besides, his agency will perform selective and targeted elimination. For the elimination, his agency will do it at each hamlet area because dog strength radius is maximally 10 km. The elimination has been carried out at Ambyarsari hamlet on Tuesday (May 1) and Melaya Pasar on Wednesday (May 2). Meanwhile, the rabies transmission is still worrying. It is proved by the existence of a new red zone. He admitted the mass vaccination by Bali provincial government having been held since last April only tar-
geted 7 red zone villages of the 9 red zone villages in Jembrana with the availability of 10,000 doses of state budget aid vaccine. Two of the seven villages are in Melaya namely Tukadaya village spent 1,143 doses of vaccine and Warnasari village spent 365 doses of vaccine. The others are one village in Jembrana sub-district namely Batuagung village spending 1,157 doses of vaccine, two villages in Mendoyo subdistrict namely Penyaringan village spending 352 doses of vaccine and Yeh Sumbul village spending 671 doses as well as two villages in Pekutatan sub-district, namely Gumbrih village spending 651 doses and Pangyangan village spending 352 doses of vaccine. Originally his agency already proposed the vaccination for the nine villages but so far the provincial government can only realize the seven villages. Meanwhile, two other villages excluded in the target are Asahduren village, Pekutatan and Dauh Waru village, Jembrana where the new case of positive bites only occurred in 2017. (kmb)

By doing so, he can help mentor the children at school. “I do not know for sure if there is a school that would accept me as auxiliary teacher with this condition. Hopefully, I can be accepted. Kanye West sparks new outrage in calling slavery ‘choice’ NEW YORK - Rapper Kanye West, on the receiving end of criticism in the music world after backing President Donald Trump, sparked fresh outrage Tuesday when he called slavery “a choice.” The rapper, never shy about expressing himself, made the comments in passing during one of two free-flowing interviews he gave as he promotes two upcoming albums. “You hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years? That sounds like a choice,” West told TMZ Live, the broadcast wing of the celebrity gossip site. West elaborated little on his statement but appeared to be drawing a parallel to how he is presumed to hold certain views as an African American artist. “We’re mentally in prison. I like the word ‘prison’ because slavery is too direct to the idea of blacks. Like Holocaust is Jews, slavery is blacks,” West said. West’s remarks immediately sparked an uproar on Twitter, his favorite medium, and he was taken to task live by a TMZ employee who said he was “appalled.” The 40-year-old rapper, designer and husband of reality television star Kim Kardashian re-emerged last month after a year-long absence that followed a purported mental breakdown. He enraged many fellow artists -- but was embraced by conservative commentators -- as he
praised Trump, who has since cited the rapper’s words as evidence of minority support. In a separate interview with radio host Charlamagne tha God, West said he had not followed Trump’s policies but, “When I see an outsider infiltrate, I connect with that.” West -- who in 2005 made headlines by saying that then president George W. NEW YORK - Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday the world’s largest social network will soon include a new dating feature -- while vowing to make privacy protection its top priority in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Zuckerberg unveiled the plans as he addressed Facebook’s annual F8 developers conference in San Jose, California -- emphasizing that the focus would be on helping people find longterm partners. “This is going to be for building real, long-term relationships, not just hookups,” Zuckerberg said in presenting the new feature, noting that one in three marriages in the United States start online -- and that some 200 million Facebook users identify as being single. Under the new feature, users will be able to create a separate “dating” profile not visible to their network of friends, with potential matches recommended based on dating preferences, points in common and mutual acquaintances. It will be free of charge, in line with Facebook’s core offering. The announcement sent shares in the online dating giant Match.com tumbling, finishing the formal trading day down 22 percent. The 33-year-old CEO also said the dating offer was built from the ground up with privacy and safety in mind, as he underscored the firm’s commitment to boosting privacy protections. Belly of the bull: Bali’s Hindu cremations for peace in the afterlife
Flames engulf a wooden bull with the body of an elderly Balinese man inside its belly, an elaborate cremation that many on the mostly Hindu island see as crucial for peace in the afterlife. Following the blaze, the 81-year-old’s ashes are spread on a large piece of fabric dressed with flowers. Villagers in traditional sarongs march to a river where the remains are released into the gurgling water. Called Ngaben, the ceremony is intended to set free a person’s soul so it can enter a higher realm where it will be reborn or liberated from evil spirits. In the village of Tabanan, hundreds of friends and
relatives came together to witness the cremations of two elderly cousins at the end of a days-long ritual. A band plays traditional music with prayers as the bodies are washed and dressed in colourful
attire. The coffins are paraded through town so people can say goodbye, and also to confuse evil spirits that might want to disturb the solemn ceremony. Relatives come together to pre-
pare offerings of flowers, money, fruit and holy water to be placed around the coffins, which are later moved to the belly of the four-metre (13-foot) tall wooden animal. Cows are sacred throughout Hinduism, the religion practised by most of Bali’s residents. But Ngaben is distinctive to this Indonesian island. “To us Balinese, there has to be Ngaben,” said I Gusti Putu Artayasa, the son of one of the de-
