The Eagles sue Hotel California

MEXICO - The Eagles have filed a lawsuit accusing the owners of a Mexico hotel of using the name “Hotel California,” arguably the band’s most famous song, without permission. In a complaint filed late Monday, the Eagles said owners of the 11-room Todos Santos hotel in Baja California Sur “actively encourage” guests to believe the hotel is associated with the band, in order to sell t-shirts and other merchandise, and make guests feel welcome. This allegedly included piping “Hotel California” and other Eagles songs through the hotel sound system, and selling t-shirts in that refer to the hotel as “legendary,” resulting in apparent confusion among many guests who posted online reviews. The Eagles also noted that the defendant Hotel California Baja LLC has applied with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to register the Hotel California name. “Defendants lead U.S. consumers to believe that the Todos Santos Hotel is associated with the Eagles and, among other things, served as the inspiration for the lyrics in ‘Hotel California,’ which is false,” the complaint said. The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles federal court seeks a variety of damages and a halt to any infringement. Neither the hotel nor the lawyer who filed its trademark application immediately responded on Tuesday to requests for comment. The Todos Santos hotel was named Hotel California when it opened in 1950, but went through a series of name changes before a Canadian couple, John and Debbie Stewart, bought it in 2001, and according to the Eagles began using the original name in marketing. Its website is . “Hotel California” is the title track from the 1976 Eagles album of the same name, and won the 1977 Grammy award for record of the year. It is known for its long guitar outro featuring Don Felder and Joe Walsh, and complex lyrics sung by Don Henley. (rtr)

Paparazzi on trial over topless photos of British royal Kate

NANTERRE — Three photographers appeared in a French court Tuesday over topless photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge, an alleged invasion of privacy that outraged Britain’s royal family.

The photos were published in a French gossip magazine in 2012, the year after Kate Middleton married Prince William. The couple subsequently filed a court complaint, but didn’t attend the trial outside Paris. The pictures of Kate were taken with telephoto lenses while she and her husband apparently were sunbathing on a patio at a private luxury estate in France’s southern Provence region. The owner and executive editor of celebrity magazine Closer also were tried along with the former publisher of a French regional newspaper that also ran the photos. None of the executives attended. Defense lawyer François Blistene, who is representing photographers Cyril Moreau and Dominique Jacovides, claimed his clients are innocent and said he is certain they will be cleared of any wrongdoing. “The investigation was botched,” Blistene said. “They were looking for scapegoats, they found these two. But the elements in the court file show that they are not involved.” The lawyer added, “Like Shakespeare might put it: ‘Much ado about nothing.’” Paul-Albert Iweins, the lawyer for Closer magazine owner Ernesto Mauri, asserted that he did not understand why the royal couple was upset enough to go to court. “The article made everybody happy, from the readers to the royal family, whatever they might say, since the couple was presented under a very favorable light,” Iweins said. The prosecutor asked the court to impose substantial fines on the magazine executives and photographers Moreau and Jacovides. Jean Veil, the lawyer for Kate and William, said he was seeking high damages. A verdict is expected on July 4.(ap)

Convoy and doodle still become a ‘tradition’ of graduation DENPASAR - The roar of motorcycles made noisy the area of Jalan Kamboja, Denpasar, on Tuesday (May 2). The riders were none other than the high school students with uniforms filled doodles made of spray paint and markers. It was the announcing day of national exam results for high school and vocational school coinciding with the National Education Day. Students’ motorcycles were not only deafening, but also crowded along the road section around the school complex. Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, did not dismiss if the convoy and doodle still become a tradition of graduation. Actually, the students are now more facilitated because the national exam is no longer a major determinant of their graduation. In this case, the students’ graduation is determined by each school. On the other hand, the action of the students making noises with their motorcycle even interfered with the implementation of the national exam for junior high school level, especially around Jalan Kamboja. “I’ve got information from principals and teachers that they have told their students (not make any convoys and doodles—Ed). But the notification is not enough at all, it needs to be formulated

later,” he said when visiting SMAN 1 Denpasar high school on Jalan Kamboja, Denpasar. Wiryatama pointed out that school can create an entertainment activity concentrated at each school. By that way, the students do not need to celebrate their graduation by convoys on the road or even go to another school. Graduation celebration outside the school is said to have the potential of resulting in negative impacts. “We have delivered, and teachers have tried to prevent them for several times. But as the euphoria implies, they still want to express their joy after having been educated in high discipline for three years, now they want to celebrate it. Similarly, we cannot close all of them, so that we look forward to better model,” he explained accompanied by Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta. Wiryatama added that Bali House of Representatives have also been thinking to make a regulation. Formulation of the students’ graduation celebration may not endanger them and the society. Regarding his visit to SMAN 1 Denpasar, this former regent of Tabanan is still associated with the issue of mass quarrel involving the students of the local school. “We already read newspaper yesterday there are symptoms that SMAN 1 (SMAN 1 Denpasar) and SMAN 4 Denpasar high school students almost got involve in mass quarrel. In the future,

we together should attempt to avoid such situation because Bali is a tourist destination. Any small commotion will quickly spread everywhere,” explained this PDI-P politician. Related to the quarrel issue, Principal of SMAN I Denpasar (SMANSA), Nyoman Purnajaya, claimed not to know at all about the incident. He agreed with the parliament to make a formulation of positive graduation celebration for students. For the announcement of the national exam results last Tuesday, he has announced that students do not need to come to school and simply see the results at home through website. However, the twelfth grade students remained to come to school and even scribbled their uniform. “I have forbidden them from coming to school, not appealing only. We’ve followed up by making no announcements at school. If they come to school and we drive them out, it is nonsense because this is their home, too,” he said. Interestingly, SMAN I Denpasar this year actually managed to achieve the best for high school in Bali in three categories. Respectively, it achieved the average scoring in the category of natural sciences, the total individual score of natural sciences, and the average scores of the social sciences program. Denpasar asked to develop creative industry

DENPASAR - The development of industrial sector reaching 5-6 percent will have a good impact on the absorption of labor. If the development can be well maintained, it will need a total 600,000 workforces per year. However, the existing workforce must meet the required competencies of the industrial sector. This was affirmed by the Chief of Industrial Training Center at the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, Mudjiono, at an opening ceremony of human resource training at the center for

industry training agency in Denpasar, recently. He asserted that competence of labor is necessary, so as not to be left out by the quality of human resources from other countries. Bali growing with its tourism sector can focus on creative industry, such as information technology and the related fields. “What owned by a particular region must be in accordance with the needs of the industrial sector. Hopefully, it will not be like in Kerawang, West Java, where in the region there is a lot of develop-

ing automotive industries, but the absorption of local labor is very low. The number of unemployed in Kerawang is quite high. So, do not be like that,” he said. Mudjiono said that currently industrial development has entered into the fourth generation. In the first generation, people still use manual tools and then in the next generation have started to enter the use of machines, and was then resumed with the operation of automatic machines in the third generation. The current generation has already done it online. This

development must be followed, so that everything can go well. Since the industry will develop well, it must be supported by three components, namely investors, information technology and competent human resources. To realize competent human resources, he said, many things that can be done, especially by the center for vocational training in each region. The first step is to provide local industry-based education. It is meant that after the learning activities they can still be absorbed the industrial sector. In realizing

this, his agency has started to build schools in a number of regions outside Java whose curricula are in accordance with the existing industry in the region. If the related schools have not been available yet, the vocational training center can provide training for prospective workers. AstraZeneca immunotherapy wins first approval in bladder cancer

Wide variation in quality at U.S. weight loss surgery centers

MICHIGAN - Quality varies widely at U.S. centers of excellence for bariatric surgery, with serious complication rates of less than 1 percent at some places and more than 10 percent at others, a recent study suggests.

Researchers examined rates of serious complications within 30 days of weight loss operations for 145,527 patients at 165 bariatric centers of excellence in 12 U.S. states. Wisconsin had the least amount of variation among facilities in complication rates, which ranged from 1.5 percent to 3.3 percent, researchers report in JAMA Surgery. Nebraska had the most variety, with complication rates ranging from 1 percent to 10.3 percent. Often, surgery centers with higher complication rates were close to other centers with lower complication rates, the study also found. “Patients are likely unaware of the variation,” said lead study author Dr. Andrew Ibrahim of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. “In fact, many surgeons may be surprised by the findings,” Ibrahim said by email. Before there were any centers of excellence, or even basic accreditation programs for bariatric surgery, death rates were as high as 9 percent in some centers that didn’t do a huge number of these operations each year, researchers note. In a push to improve quality and curb death and complication rates, the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric

Surgery combined their two separate accreditation programs into a single nationwide program in 2012. This set out uniform criteria for so-called centers of excellence for bariatric surgery. Among other things, qualifying hospitals have to do a certain number of these operations each year and use special operating tables and equipment for bariatric patients. For the current study, researchers analyzed complication rates from 2010 to 2013 at bariatric centers of excellence in Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Washington and Wisconsin. They focused on serious complications like bleeding, heart and lung problems, organ injury, wound infections and repeat operations. Patients in the study were around 47 years old on average and most of them were white and female. In addition to obesity, many of them had other health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, depression and lung disease. More than half of them had what’s known as laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which reduces the stomach to a small pouch about the size of an egg. Nearly all of the bariatric centers of excellence in the study were in urban areas, and about 71 percent were based at teaching hospitals. When researchers grouped hospitals with similar complication rates, they found 28 percent of the centers had at least one nearby facility with lower complication rates. (rtr)

CALIFORNIA - U.S. regulators have approved AstraZeneca’s key immunotherapy drug durvalumab as a treatment for bladder cancer, marking the first commercial green light for a product the company hopes will go on to sell billions of dollars. The approval, while expected, marks a milestone for the British company, which expects new cancer drugs to help revive its fortunes following patent losses on older blockbuster products like cholesterol pill Crestor and Nexium for heartburn. Bladder cancer itself is a relatively small initial market, where AstraZeneca is lagging behind rivals Bristol-Myers Squibb and Roche whose immunotherapies are already approved for the condition. Durvalumab’s big commercial opportunity lies in previously untreated lung cancer, where key clinical trial results, including with combination therapy, are due in June or July. Leerink analyst Seamus Fernandez sees durvalumab capturing a modest 10 percent of the estimated $2.3 billion global bladder cancer market, while AstraZeneca in 2014 put the drug’s peak sales in all cancers at $6.5 billion, including combination use. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said late on Monday it granted accelerated approval to AstraZeneca’s drug to treat advanced bladder cancer in patients whose disease had progressed despite chemotherapy. The drug, which will have the brand name Imfinzi, works by helping the body’s immune cells kill cancer, offering an alternative to toxic chemotherapy. While not without side effects, such immunooncology treatment has the potential of longer-lasting efficacy,

although it comes at a high price. AstraZeneca said the average wholesale acquisition cost of durvalumab would be around $15,000 a month. “This first approval for Imfinzi is an important milestone in our return to growth,” said AstraZeneca Chief Executive Pascal Soriot. The drug belongs to a new class of medicines called PD-L1 inhibitors that block a mechanism tumours use to evade detection from the immune system. It was approved by the FDA for use in patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma, by far the most common form of bladder cancer, regardless of their status for the amount of PD-L1 protein on their cancer cells. Durvalumab won accelerated approval, which enables the use of therapies for serious conditions to fill an unmet medical need based on data the FDA believes is likely to predict a clinical benefit. AstraZeneca is required to conduct trials to confirm actual benefit to patients. The FDA also approved a complementary diagnostic from Roche that can be used with the drug to assess PD-L1 levels. Studies have shown patients with high PD-L1 are more likely to do well on durvalumab, although such a test is not required for its use. Durvalumab is being tested on its own and also in combination with another immune systemboosting therapy called tremelimumab in various cancers. The medicine is the latest immunotherapy to be approved by the FDA, after nods for treatments developed against various cancers by Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck & Co, Roche, and a collaboration between Germany’s Merck KGaA and Pfizer. “Their amount reached 500 people upwards, there are no high school students of Denpasar, there are also those from South Badung,” said Chief of South Denpasar Police, Wisnu Wardana.

He justified that the convoy made the roads jammed so that many residents complained. Moreover, the sound of their motorcycle they rode to swell the ear. “When entering the area of ??South Denpasar, we continuously monitored them, including when they gathered on Serangan Island,” said Wisnu. According to him, his institution has not received any reports on criminal acts during the action took place. “Nothing happened. They just made convoys and gathered. MANGUPURA — Illegal regional levies are hampering potential investments by entrepreneurs. President Joko Widodo has already revoked Perda (regional bylaws) related to levies that are considered to be unproductive. The Ministry of Home Affairs has revoked more han 3,200 bylaws related to levies. However, many of them have been revived. “Actually, many of the bylaws that were made voide have been reactivated”, said 20022017 Chairman of Apindo Bali, Panudiana Kuhn, on Tuesday (May 2). These levies he explained are hampering entrepreneurs who would like to invest. “Such cases are still rampant in Bali, including issuing temporary residential card (Kipem). According to the central government, such charges are considered to be illegal” he concluded. Apindo is actively involved in investment and licensing issues, making it easier for their members

to invest. “We bring in investors from eveywhere”, said Kuhn. Apindo is also involved in monitoring illegal levies being collecged in Bali. “Because of this type of thing, because of corruption, our country is getting poorer” he said sardonically. In order to prevent such illegal levies form being charged, central Apindo is involved in the anti-illegal levy taskforce (Saber Pungli). It also includes becoming the commissioner of the BPJS owned by the government, Apindo and labor unions. “We struggle every year so that provincial and district minimum wage does not increase too much”, he said. Kuhn added that is grateful for the president’s decision to have the provincial minimal wage not exceed the economic growth and inflation rate in each region. AMLAPURA — By the end of grandiose ritual at the Dalem Temple of Karangasem customary village coinciding with the Soma Umanis Pujut, Monday (May. 1), the local customary village held Nyenuk ceremony. It symbolizes the arrival of ‘guests’ consisting of gods and goddess coming down from heaven to bestow graces to their people so that they can carry out the ceremony smoothly and successfully. The Nyenuk procession with mapeed from took place from Puseh Temple to Dalem Temple along one kilometer on Jalan Gajah Mada-Jalan Bhayangkara road section, Amlapura. This sacred procession was followed by thousands of people from 34 customary hamlets at the local village. Due to booming entourage, the protocol Jalan Gajah Mada-Jalan Bhayangkara road section was totally closed for almost one and a half hours. All the vehicles are temporarily diverted to Jalan Lettu Alit, Jalan Kapten Gebun and Jalan Ksatrian. The sequence of mapeed procession coordinated by ritual committee, Ketut Semara Jaya, was equipped by some paraphernalia from the front row like drums, oblation, sacred weapon of nine deities, five deities, rejang renteng dance, baris dance, ardanareswari, oblation, baleganjur gamelan music, pecalang (customary security guard) and followed by people. The nine deities (dewata nawa sanga) were accompanied by several accompaniments played by

young men-women in the form of panca dewata (five deities), Rejang Renteng, Baris and Ardanareswari. A total of 33 men symbolizing nine deities were dressed colorfully pursuant to the nine directions of the compass. Each carried sugar cane stalk suspended with fruits and tubers as symbols of the gods bringing along agricultural produce for ritual means. The nine deities played by youngsters only put on a cloth used to wrap up to the chest and headdress. Along the mapeed procession, all the participants turned murwa daksina (clockwise) at every threeway intersection while carrying the weapon of nine deities for three times. After the mapeed procession arrived at the Dalem Temple, Jero Gede Mahendra, the priest of Dalem Temple, put welcoming oblations at outermost courtyard. The atmosphere is really solemn, where the pilgrims focused when the Dalem Sidakarya welcomed the nine deities with dialogue between the ritual committee, chief of cus-

tomary village I Wayan Bagiarta with Dalem Sidakarya and messenger of many deities. In essence, the dialogue of the ritual committee invoked to the nine deities as ‘guests’ who came to Dalem Temple to witness the whole series of ceremonies until the end so that it can run smoothly without disruption. After receiving worship of the pilgrims, the nine deities turned clockwise for in three times. “At the end, this series of ceremonies are closed with worship en masse and ask for blessing in the form of holy water and bija (blessed rice),” said the Dalem Temple priest, Jro Gede Mahendra. The Nyenuk ceremony was officiated over by Ida Pedanda Istri Oka from Griya Pendem, Amlapura. It belongs to a series of melaspas, ngeresigana, nubung daging, ngenteg linggih, pepeselang, tabuh gentuh and piodalan (festival) of Dalem Temple at Karangasem customary village. Assange lawyer asks Swedish court to tear up detention order

STOCKHOLM - Julian Assange’s lawyer has requested a Swedish court rescind a detention order against the WikiLeaks founder over an alleged rape and allow him to go to Ecuador to be safe from extradition to the United States. Assange, 45, has been holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London since 2012, after taking refuge there to avoid extradition to Sweden over allegations of rape, which he denies. He fears Sweden would in turn hand him over to the United States to face prosecution over WikiLeaks’ publication of thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents in one of the largest information leaks in U.S. history. Lawyer Per Samuelson said the United States had now openly said it wants to arrest Assange. “Given that the U.S. is obviously hunting him now, he has to make use of his political asylum and it is Sweden’s duty to make sure that Sweden is no longer a reason for that fact he has to stay in the embassy,” Samuelson said. “If they rescind the detention

order, there is a possibility he can go to Ecuador and then he can use political asylum in an entire country.” CIA Director Mike Pompeo last month called WikiLeaks a “hostile intelligence service”, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, responding to a question about Assange, said the administration was stepping up its efforts against all leaks of sensitive information. “Whenever a case can be made, we will seek to put some people in jail,” Sessions said. Samuelson said Sweden’s Supreme Court had previously rejected a similar request for the detention order to be torn up on the grounds that there was little chance that Assange would be handed over to the United States. “With the Supreme Court’s own reasoning, his detention should

now be rescinded because we can now prove that the U.S. is hunting Julian Assange,” he said. He said it was unreasonable to demand that he should give up the 100 percent security of political asylum in Ecuador in exchange for the lower protection given by Swedish rules on extradition to the United States. Samuelson said he expected the High Court to consider the request in the next few weeks. Assange was questioned in November in Ecuador’s London embassy over the alleged rape, and Sweden is now considering whether to proceed with its preliminary investigation. The offence is alleged to have occurred in 2010. Samuelson said Swedish prosecutors would still be able to pursue their investigation against Assange even were he to be allowed to go to Ecuador. “If they want to charge him and go to trial, that can happen just as well with him at liberty in Ecuador since that’s the only place he can be,” Samuelson said. MANILA - In less than 10 months, Regina Lopez ordered the closure of more than half the mines in the Philippines, cancelled dozens of contracts for future projects and banned open-pit mining. Her radical reforms eventually proved too radical even for a country with a strong anti-mining lobby led by the influential Roman Catholic Church. On Wednesday, lawmakers rejected Lopez’s appointment as environment minister. “It was not my dream. It was a dream and a promise that we had for the country and it is unfortunate that business interests have in fact run the day,” a visibly distraught Lopez told reporters shortly after the outcome was announced. “You’ll get clobbered...anyone who’s here if they have the guts and the courage to step on business interest you’ll get killed.” Lopez’s reputation as a fiery environmental crusader was the main reason why President Rodrigo Duterte appointed her as secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on June 30 last year. True to form, she launched a mining review the following week, eventually suspending 10 mines before the year was over and warning 20 more were at risk of being halted for environmental breaches. She raised the stakes in February when she ordered the closure of 22 of the country’s 41 mines. She followed it by cancelling 75 contracts for undeveloped mines and just last week banned open-pit mining, which she blames for causing extensive environmental damage. “Truth needs courage. If I don’t act the truth and if I don’t act courageously a part of me will die inside. I have to be true to myself because I have to survive as a person,” the 63-yearold once told reporters. BUSINESS Eurozone economy outpaced the US in Q1 LONDON — The eurozone, for so long a weak pillar of the global economy, outpaced the United States in the first quarter of the year. Official figures released Wednesday show that the single currency bloc expanded by a solid, if unspectacular, quarterly rate of 0.5 percent in the first three months of the year. The increase reported by statistics agency Eurostat was in line with market expectations but may prove a slight disappointment to some in the markets following a run of other strong economic data. A number of economists had predicted a pick-up in the rate of growth from the previous quarter’s 0.5 percent. The eurozone nevertheless grew faster than the U.S. economy, which during the first quarter expanded by 0.7 percent on an annualized basis, way below the eurozone’s equivalent rate of about 2 percent. The eurozone economy has been expanding steadily since 2013 but failed to push into a high gear, largely because it battled with sky-high debts in many countries, notably Greece. No country breakdown was provided by Eurostat on Wednesday but surveys have shown that the recovery is becoming broader-based across sectors and countries. Germany, the eurozone’s biggest economy, remains the fulcrum and its sustained economic expansion is expected to continue through to the country’s general election later this year. There are hopes that the eurozone will pick up further steam in the second quarter following recent surveys indicating an uptick in April, particularly in France. The prevailing view in the markets is that a victory in Sunday’s presidential election for centrist Emmanuel Macron over Marine Le Pen from the far-right could further boost the eurozone’s second-biggest economy. A string of general elections in key eurozone states has been identified as a potential risk to economic growth this year, as populist or extremist parties could endanger the region’s commitment to the euro. So far, defeats for populist politicians in Austria and the Netherlands have shored up confidence in the markets that there won’t be a lurch toward a break-up of the single currency or of the wider European Union itself. However, concerns over Britain’s withdrawal from the EU will remain. In March, before calling a general election, Prime Minister Theresa May triggered the formal two-year Brexit process. There are already signs that worries over Britain’s future are hurting the country’s economy — growth slowed to 0.3 percent in the first quarter of the year from 0.7 percent in the previous threemonth period. Growth in Britain is widely expected to remain soft as it negotiates its EU exit. The economy is expected to be hobbled by uncertainty — both businesses and consumers may put off spending until they know how the post-Brexit environment looks. And the pound’s sharp fall since last June’s Brexit vote has pushed up prices, which is weighing on consumers at a time when wage increases are modest.(ap)

Meet the brothers fighting for indebted Greek homeowners

ATHENS — Leonidas Papadopoulos is a doctor, his brother Ilias an economist, and once a week they take a break from ordinary life to fight the government. They go to court every Wednesday, the day homeowners in default on mortgages lose their properties at auctions — the final step of foreclosure in a country where the government and its citizens are overwhelmed by debt. Auctions are supervised by a notary public, who faces a weekly hour of crowd harassment. At a lower court in Athens one Wednesday, the Papadopoulos brothers and about 30 protesters gather menacingly around the notary’s desk, shouting insults and chanting “Vultures out!” When the atmosphere gets heated, protesters clamber onto the empty judges’ benches. In the court halls outside the chamber, demonstrators unfurl large banners and set up loudspeakers to blast music normally associated with protest movements from the 1970s. Police look on without intervening, and another auction is cancelled. The crowd celebrates with chants of “No Homes in Bankers’ Hands!” — and goes home. “We create a list of all the auctions that are due to take place and decide which cases require our intervention. When the

notary enters the chamber, we eject them with our presence, and by shouting,” the 35-year-old Leonidas Papadopoulos says. Each postponement typically delays an auction by about two months. The bearded brothers have created a nationwide protest network of several hundred volunteers to disrupt the auctions across Greece and to help illegally reconnect homes of unemployed people who have had their electricity cut off. In its fourth year, the campaign is intensifying as the country faces pressure from its international bailout creditors to deal with a mountain of bad bank loans. Greece owes a staggering 325 billion euros ($354 billion), most of it to bailout lenders, while annual economic output — hammered by austerity, political upheaval and years of recession — has withered to below 180 billion euros ($196 billion).

The country’s key assets are locked up for 99 years under the control of a fund created by the creditors. The picture for the country’s 10 million citizens is equally grim: Some 4 million are in arrears on tax payments, while 2 million households and businesses are behind on their electricity bills. Nearly half of loans given by banks for businesses and property purchases are now officially listed as soured. To try and head off more serious trouble for banks, the government is loosening property protection rules and plans to move foreclosed home auctions to an online procedure after the summer. Ilias Papadopoulos, 33, sees the problem differently, arguing that people’s property are being seized at fire-sale prices after tax collection has been exhausted, in a desperate effort to maintain bailout debt commitments. “There is an effort by a coalition of interests: banks, financial funds, pro-bailout governments, and the international creditors. They want to grab people’s property by using the public debt as a lever,” he said. (ap)

Rising Brexit “bill” raises negotiating stakes

BRUSSELS - EU negotiators have hiked possible payment demands for Brexit over recent weeks, officials say, widening the divide between Brussels and London, which questions whether it owes anything at all before talks start next month.

Hours before chief negotiator Michel Barnier was due to give more details on the EU’s standpoint, a Financial Times headline saying the EU might seek an upfront payment in 2019 of up to 100 billion euros ($110 billion), drew an immediate rejection from Britain’s Brexit Secretary David Davis that he would pay that sum. The European Commission has previously given a ballpark estimate of the bill of about 60 billion euros. The FT said the calculations it referred to would result in a net payment from Britain of roughly that level, after subsequent reimbursements. One senior EU official involved in preparing for the talks after a British election on June 8 said he did not recognise the 100-billion-euro figure, although a number of private calculations of the bill have gone as high or even higher. Last month, the Bruegel think-tank in Brussels put the up-front payment for Britain as high as 109 billion euros under one of many scenarios for the calculation. Later reimbursement would bring the net figure to 65 billion, Bruegel’s study showed.

Over the past month, the 27 other member states have drafted negotiating guidelines for the executive Commission that leaders agreed on Saturday. In the course of drafting, governments insisted on clarifying that Britain be made to pay up front for, among other things, contingent liabilities for guarantees on loans made by, for example, the European Investment Bank. A document seen by Reuters outlining Barnier’s plans for negotiations, showed he has a plan to calculate up-front payment for contingent liabilities, to be repaid later: “This calculation will also identify the amounts covering or guaranteeing loans which have to be reimbursed to the United Kingdom if uncalled, on the basis of the maturity of the loans.” Barnier has repeatedly said that the final amount cannot be calculated until Britain is leaving, since the EU budget will change. However, EU leaders want agreement on the “methodology” for the calculation among several conditions for opening the talks on a future free trade deal that Britain is seeking. Leaders hope that agreement could be reached by December. However, concern is rising in Brussels that talks might collapse as the rhetoric from both sides intensifies and British Prime Minister Theresa May fights a snap election she called last month, increasing the possibility of Britain leaving in a legal limbo in March 2019 that would be damaging all round. SANAA - Famine and disease haunt the living, but not even the dead are spared the calamities of Yemen’s two-year-old civil war. Ancient mummies are withering away in a major museum for lack of electricity and preservative chemicals from abroad - a sign that the conflict is harming not only the country’s present and future but also its rich past. The dozen spindly corpses, curled into the fetal position or swaddled in baskets, belong to a lost pagan civilization around 2 1/2 millennia ago - long before the advent of Islam. Lying beneath glass panes within the archaeology department in the capital Sanaa’s main university, the mummies might have spent their eternal slumber blissfully unaware of the otherworldly warplanes pounding their homeland. A Saudi-led military coalition has carried out thousands of air strikes in a bid to dislodge Yemen’s armed Houthi movement from the capital. The conflict has killed at least 10,000 people and unleashed a humanitarian crisis. But a timeless enemy, abetted by the disorder of war, threatens the mummies’ repose. “The mummies have started to decay and are infected with bacteria. This is because we don’t have electricity and the machines that are supposed to maintain them,”

said Abdelrahman Jarallah, head of the university’s anitiquities department. “We need some chemicals to sanitise the mummies every six months, and they aren’t available due to the political situation.” Power cuts plague Sanaa, sapping the dehumidifiers that help preserve the “Hall of Mummies.” Funding to government bodies like the university have suffered from a struggle between Yemen’s warring parties for control of the central bank. Antiquities experts are appealing to the university and the culture ministry for funding and equipment to better fend off the microbes eating into the mummies’ flesh. But the coalition’s closure of Sanaa airport and a near-blockade over a key Red Sea port - aimed at stopping weapons shipments have cut off imports of specialty goods like the chemicals needed to ward off the microscopic menace. Sheba and other Yemeni kingdoms once provided the frankincense and myrrh hauled by desert caravans to perfume the temples of the Holy Land and ancient Rome. Modern combat, however, is disfiguring important cultural treasures. Air strikes have levelled medieval mudbrick towers in Sanaa’s old quarter, a medieval mosque and an Ottoman fort. (rtr)

SRAGEN - An Indonesian man reported to be the world’s oldest person died at the age of 146 this week, family members said on Tuesday. Sodimejo, who was known locally as Mbah Gotho, was born in December 1870, according to a government-issued ID card that media reports said had been verified by local officials in the Central Java town of Sragen. Indonesian media reported that Sodimejo was the world’s oldest person, citing his identity papers. Reuters could not independently verify Sodimejo’s age.

Sodimejo’s grandson said he had been taken to hospital last week because of his deteriorating health. “The problem was he didn’t want to eat or drink,” said grandson Suryanto, who like his grandfather, goes by one name. He then insisted on being brought home, and died several days later, Suryanto said. Sodimejo was buried on Monday morning in a local cemetery. According to Guinness World Records, Jeanne Calment, a French woman, had the longest confirmed human lifespan. She died in 1997 at the age of 122. (rtr)

JAKARTA - Indonesian environmentalists have rescued a rare albino orangutan from captivity on the island of Kalimantan, a conservation charity said on Tuesday. The five-year-old, pale-haired, blue-eyed female orangutan had been held captive by local residents in Central Kalimantan, where rampant deforestation by smallholders and plantation companies has endangered the lives and habitats of dozens of species. “A preliminary physical examination conducted by our medical

team has determined this is an albino orangutan: her hair, eye, and skin color is paler than normal, and she is also sensitive to light,” the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation said on its website. It added there was a good chance the primate could be released back into the wild soon. Jusuf Kalla has said that he will deny any false information, or hoax, about him as it will not only affect him but also the public, considering his position as one of the countrys leaders. “For me personally, if I happen to come across any false information about myself, I will deny it,” he said, after opening the 2017 World Press Freedom Day in the Jakarta Convention Centre, on Wednesday.

The massive circulation of non-credible information has become one of the issues that had been discussed during the 2017 Worlds Press Freedom Day. Kalla said that he believed in the importance of self-censorship by the media in order to maintain its credibility. “As we had discussed last week, there should be an internal censor for these issues, and hoax should no longer be spread further,” he remarked. Kalla added that he does not pay attention to any false information regarding him, as he rarely goes online on social media platforms. However, as the vice president, he believed that those inauthentic news stories will have an impact on the general public.

“I do not like to read very much, and I have no time to read such kind of news,” he reiterated. On the other hand, President Joko Widodo has been rather up-todate with news as he reads them on his own. Hence, he is aware of the kind of information that is circulating around the media, he explained. “Therefore, be careful when you think of creating a hoax, because it is very likely for the president to read it, as he carries his own iPad with him to read wherever he goes,” he added. A short while ago, Kalla had denied a false information that he had commented on the large number of flowers that had been sent to Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) and Vice Governor Gatot Saiful Djarot, in which he was quoted to have said that the money used to send those flowers could have been used for those in need. Kalla had denied the comment while attending the Anti-Hoax Journalist Network declaration in Jakarta on April 28. “I was shocked when I read it, because I had not given any such comments in reality. I had never said anything about those flower arrangements,” he revealed in the Vice Presidential Offices in Jakarta on April 28. (ant)

OAKLAND - Lost in the season-long hype of the Golden State Warriors’ All-Star cast is Javale McGee, a journeyman few rarely hear about but who has proven to be an indispensable part of the team’s quest for an NBA title. Prior to joining the Warriors this season, McGee was best known for his frequent appearances on the TNT “Inside the NBA” segment “Shaqtin’ A Fool,” where Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal highlights on court blunders. MADRID — Another impressive performance by Cristiano Ronaldo has left Real Madrid on the verge of another Champions League final. Ronaldo scored a hat trick to reach 400 goals with Madrid and lead the defending champions to a commanding 3-0 win over city rival Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal on Tuesday. He scored with a header in the 10th minute, with a strike into the top corner in the 73rd and a close-range shot in the 86th to give Madrid a comfortable lead going into next week’s second leg at Atletico’s Vicente Calderon Stadium. The governing body of soccer proposes giving its ruling council the power to decide that a continent could skip just one World Cup before hosting again. In a legal text published Wednesday ahead of next week’s FIFA Congress in Bahrain, the governing body said the flexibility in hosting would be allowed “if circumstances so require.” That could let China bid to host the 2030 World Cup only eight years after Qatar. The centenary 2030 World Cup is expected to bring a South American co-hosting bid that includes Uruguay, the original tournament host in 1930.
