TAIPEI - The intricacies of cross-strait diplomacy may not have been uppermost on her mind but Katy Perry caused a stir in both Taiwan and China with her politically tinged attire at a Taipei concert this week. Singer-songwriter Perry moved fans to tears Tuesday, according to local media, after she appeared on stage draped in a Taiwanese flag at Taipei Arena, while donning a glittering gold dress adorned with sunflowers -- the symbol of anti-China student protests in Taiwan last year. Photos and messages that read “I am so moved”, “awesome” and “I love you” were posted on the Internet after the stunt, though it is still unclear whether she meant to make a political statement with her attire. The flag was reportedly given to her by a member of the audience. “Beautiful. Cheers as sleeping princess welcomed into the world

LONDON - Cradled in her mother’s arms, Britain’s new sleeping princess was welcomed into the outside world Saturday with joyous cheers, a forest of camera phones and a sea of flags.

It was both a traditional and very 21stcentury moment as Prince William and his wife Kate emerged from the Lindo Wing doors at St Mary’s Hospital in London. Several hundred cheering well-wishers crammed behind barricades on the streets around the private hospital wing, screaming with delight as the beaming couple emerged. BANGLI - Trunyan village in Kintamani, Bangli, is one of the villages in Bali, that remains firm in maintaining its ancestral traditions. One example of their unique traditions, is their ancestral funerary practice that involves not burying their dead but leaving them on the ground. Trunyan residents also have particular taboos that they adhere to, including the prohibition of women entering the cemetery area. Headman of Trunyan, Wayan Arjana, explained that the graves in Trunyan village are divided into three types: sema wayah, sema nguda and sema bantas. Sema wayah is intended specifically for the bodies of public figures and ordinary people, whose body is intact and who died naturally. Sema nguda is intended for babies and adults who are not married, while the sema bantas is intended specifically for deformed bodies and those who die of unnatural causes (such as accidents or suicide). The three kinds of graves are in different locations that are far from one and other. Arjana went on to explaine the sema wayah graveyard is located at the edge of the lake, about 500

meters from the village center, and is the burial site that is most often visited by foreigners who come to see the corpses that are laid to rest in a hole just 20 cm deep. The bodies are only covered in fabric and are fenced in by pieces of bamboo blades called ancak saji. When a burial takes place, women abstain form entering the sema wayah area, though they can come close to the boundary. The entire funeral process is carried by male residents. If any women goes into the graveyard area, it is believed that they will be struck by disaster. “Thus, so far our women have never known about the conditions in the cemetery here,” he explained. sema wayah cemetery is that there are only seven graves, that are laid side by side. The graves at the easternmost end are intended for public figures, while the remaining graves are for ordinary residents. The number of graves at sema wayah never increase or decrease because whenever there is a new body to be buried, the old one will be removed and replaced with the new one. The bones of the old bodies are then placed in a special area, not far from the row of graves. Considering that this unique burial tradition has been pracitced by local people since time immemorial, it is no wonder that there are quite a number of skulls and bones accumulated at the sema wayah site. TABANAN - Many people do not realize that having a green space in ones yard has a significant impact on water absorption and is an effective way to sustain water resources and to avoide flooding. However, especially in urban areas, most people’s yards have been paved over and/or converted into a place of business such as a shops or stalls that are built using permanent materials (concrete). Given how important it is that the ground be able to absorb water, it is necessary for the urban community in particular to create biopores, or water absorbing holes in their yards. Head of the Executive Agency of Agricultural Extension, Fisheries and Forestry of Tabanan, Nyoman Sunarta expressed this necessity after the many recent recent floods. As stated by Sunarta, during the rainy season, rainwater must be managed properly and one way of doing this is by allowing green spaces to flourish, because plants naturally absorb water and store it in their roots and allow the soil to absorb it. Currently most peoples yards are covered in concrete and have no trees, so the next best option is to create bio-

pores through which water can drain back into the soil. “Making biopores in home yards is very important because they allow rain water to get reabsorbed by the earth,” he said. Sunarta added that biopores do not require a lot of spaces and can easily be made by anyone. Biopores, especially in urban areas, are very helpful because they allow water to be absorbed by the ground much faster than concrete. “We made biopores at our office located at Dangin Carik and the uptake of water during the rainy season is very much faster than it was and greatly reduces flooding,” he said. He admitted that in order to make urban people aware of the need to make bipods in their yards, everyone needs to cooperate in disseminating information on the topic and for people to take action. “We also put emphasis in counseling people about the benefits of biopores,” he said. Apart form the creation of biopores, it is also encouraged that the general public reforest unplanted areas, especially in the highlands. “We especially appeal to the community to plant bamboos in ravines,” he said. Sobbing defendant admits she killed husband due to being annoyed

DENPASAR - The trial for the murder of Robert Kevin Ellis aka Mr. Bob by with victim’s wife, defendant Julaikah Noor Aini alias Noor Ellis, Thursday (Apr. 30) starting the process of the examination of the defendant. Before the panel of judges led by A.A. Anom Wirakanta, the defendant admitted that she asked to have her husband killed because she was annoyed. Noor Ellis was in tears as she was questioned by the judges at times sobbing and occasionally adjusting her glasses. She also said that murder should not have been an option, but that there was nothing she could do now as there was no use crying over spilt milk. Noor Elis said that she can only regret her actions. However, there are a number of reasons underlying her regreted act, such a divorce which the victim did not want to grant. “For eleven years, I have not been treated like a wife,” she said. Since the woman called Mrs. Nur kept on crying, a member of the judge panel, Beslin Sihombing, asked her not to cry because she was always crying in each session. Beslin who is also judge

for corruption cases then asked whether the defendant has a child. “Yes, I do,” replied the defendant. And she said that her son was also shocked by the incident, but added that her son was annoyed, too. In the examination of the defendant, Mrs. Nur also revealed details about the abusive behavior of the victim. “He even kicked the offerings (ritual paraphernalia) during a temple ceremony,” and said Nur, then Bob grumbled that it generated a lot of rubbish. Due to frequent misunderstandings, Nur was often annoyed at being insulted. Nur allegedly asked Martin -the man who would kill Mr. Bob, to do so without causing injury. Nur said that she did not know how the victim was killed, but she did know that the victim was wrapped up so that his blood would not leave a trail. Inspired by Scotland, golf course in Atlantic Canada

INVERNESS, Nova Scotia — Ribbons of manicured turf weave through dunes land, connecting the shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the higher elevation of town in this remote corner of Cape Breton Island. Here, a 21st century golf destination has been conceived, inspired by the venerable links courses of Scotland. There is an adjacent pub with samplings of single-malt Scotch, but no motorized golf carts or beer wagons on the course itself. It’s not cheap - up to almost $200 a round during the summer - and the drive from the airport in Nova Scotia’s provincial capital of Halifax is almost 200 miles (320 kilometers). Even so, Cabot Links has been ranked among the world’s top 50 courses since opening in 2012, and it could be surpassed by a second 18 holes next door - Cabot Cliffs - that is scheduled to debut later this year. “Some of the best experiences and some of the best properties are off the beaten track,” says Andrew Alkenbrack, Cabot’s general manager and veteran of international tourism. “Good things are worth the effort.” If a late summer afternoon last season is an indication, that’s true. A squall stays offshore and gives way to a freshening breeze and sunshine,

creating a silvery mosaic on the surf. Soon, Bryan Sutherland, the local school’s physical education director who moonlights as a caddy, arrives on his bicycle. The temperature hovers in the high 60s F (20 C), and the first tee is open. What we proceed to do next is claimed to be one of the few true links golf opportunities in North America. Though many courses bill themselves as “links-style” - rolling terrain without tree cover and perhaps next to a body of water - purists believe the land must be waves of sandy hillocks that connect, or “link,” a beach to more tillable areas farther inland. In this, Cabot Links complies, just as do its older cousins across the Atlantic. Level lies are few. Off the fairway, knee-high brush, Queen Anne’s lace and colorful JoePye weed are not. Though rain is plentiful, the grass drains quickly, rewarding low running shots. The wind confounds and confuses, but the patient advice of caddy Sutherland succeeds if followed. The pace of play is steady but not strenuous. The sky, the distant bluffs and the rhapsodic sound of the sea merge in the background. A “putt” of 100 feet (30 meters) or more is not uncommon, given the lack of demarcation between fairway and green. Bunkers seem

to be sculpted by nature, not a bulldozer. Dunes remain as they might have been when there was no golf, even if that produces a blind shot to a landing area behind them. The par-4 finishing hole is downwind and fast, dictating a 130-yard (118-meter) “chip” that bounces the entire length before barely trickling just beyond the green’s back edge. Sutherland is pleased. Cabot Links sets atop what was once a coal mine, which attracted 19th century immigrants to Inverness. When the coal business disappeared, the village’s future dimmed. That changed when a young entrepreneur from Toronto named Ben Cowan-Dewar began building support in 2005 for a golf destination in Inverness after other such visions failed. Students of golf development will recognize the similarity of Cabot Links to the coastal Bandon Dunes resort in the United States, an even longer drive from the Portland, Oregon, airport than Cabot Links is from Halifax. That is no coincidence. Bandon Dunes’ creator, Mike Keiser, who became a partner in Cabot Links, now is a driving force for the second 18 holes at Cabot Cliffs, along with Masters’ champion Ben Crenshaw - who perhaps is without peer as a traditionalist in golf architecture. Like Cabot, Bandon Dunes is

walking-only. “I think Cabot has brought a new positive atmosphere to our community,” says Sutherland, a sixth-generation Cape Breton native of Scottish descent. “It is such a pleasure to enter the Cabot premises and see the smiling, welcoming faces of our young people.” About 200 residents are employed for golf operations, three restaurants and a well-appointed lodge with minimalist exteriors that blend into the landscape. Guests of the lodge benefit from reduced green fees and the new golf option of Cabot Cliffs may encourage longer stays. The lodge has expanded during the off-season and bookings for 2015 are brisk, given the buzz created by The Golf

Channel and others about the Cliffs. The formal opening of Cabot Cliffs will be in 2016, but it will be playable on a “preview” basis by July this summer. Will the Cliffs eventually overshadow Cabot Links? “I believe the two courses will complement each other,” says Joe Robinson, the resort’s director of golf. “Cabot Links will never be an ‘ugly sister.’” He describes the new course as “two courses in one.” The front nine has a “true links feel” near the beach like the older course, but the back nine “will be wild in the wind as it winds its way up the hillside culminating with the drama of the closing holes along the cliffs” - hence, the new course’s name. TABANAN - Although Jatiluwih has already been officially recognized by the U.N as world cultural heritage site, its boundaries have yet to be defined. The local government is therefore setting out to delineate the boundaries of the World Cultural Heritage (WCH) with three entrance points. However, so far the plan is still hampered by a funding problems. The plan includes erecting a jineng (rice granary) and rice statue with a budget estimation at about IDR 142 million at one of the entrances. The planned construction of the boundary points was conformed by the subdistrict head of Penebel, IPA Hendra Manik on Sunday. “This plan still needs to be finalized especially regarding the kind of buildings to be established at the entrances of the three entrances or boundaries of the Jatiluwih WCH,” he explained. He said that he also plans to summon community leaders in the area of Jatiluwih to discuss what kinds of structures would be appropriate for the Jatiluwih entrances. “So far, there are only two proposed structures; a rice granary or jineng and a rice statue. But, the plan is far from being finalized,” he explained. The cost for these two structures and a welcome sign, has been estimated at about IDR 142 million for which the subdistrict has approached Penebel legislator I Wayan Tamba. Penebel PDI-P member, I Wayan Tamba, said that so far the plan still has many obstacles to overcome, including land rights, deciding what kind of structures will be built and how big of a budget is required. “This plan still requires lengthy discussions,” he explained. He also said that he hopes the construction of the entrances to the Jatiluwih world heritage area can be realized this year. “Hopefully, everything will go well and our target can be reached this year,” he said. The three markers of the boundaries of the world heritage will be located between Ngis hamlet, Jegu village, Penebel subdistrict and Timpag, Kerambitan subdistrict (in the west), between Senganan village and Baturiti subdistrict (in the east) and between Buruan village, Penebel subdistrict and Wanasari village, Tabanan subdistrict (in the south). Hotels Far Outnumber Tourists in Badung

Bandung County is a favourite destination for domestic and foreign tourist. Apparently it is also a favourite destination for hotel investors, because the the number of hotel rooms available in Badung has mushroomed to 61,206 rooms in just four years. The number of star hotels has however remained stable at about 98 hotels with 16,360 rooms. However, non-star hotels, of which there were 505 (11,463 rooms) in 2009 has dramatically increased to 855 hotels with 34,815 hotel rooms (2014). “The construction of hotels in Badung is very widespread, and it needs to be controlled. We even hope that a temporary moratorium will be issued,” said Chairman of the Badung Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD), I Gusti Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya, recently. The over abundance of non star hotels is seen by Suryawijaya, who is also Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), Badung Chapter and others involved in tourism, as being problematic. The number of accommodations far exceeds the number of tourists so there is a negative impact on the tourism industry. “Massive incase in the number of tourist accommodations has resulted in a decrease in the quality of Badung as a tourist destination, as has caused constant price battles between hotels,” he said. Based on the data of the Government of Bali Tourism Office (Disparda), foreign tourist arrivals to Bali in 2014 amounted to 1,766,638 people - a 14 percent increase from the previous year. However, this increase is not proportional to the rapid growth of hotel room construction. “This means that the 14.89-percent increase in tourists still does not mean the expectations of hoteliers. Last year, star hotels had an average

occupancy rate somewhere in the range of 50 to 59 percent,” he said. Suryawijaya acknowledged that the regent of Badung had issued a policy, by way of a Regent Regulation, concerning minimum requirements for the construction of new hotels, but this regulation does not address the excessive rate of construction of new tourist accommodations, at best it just slows it down. “The regent’s policy (by issuing a regulation—Ed) is good. However, it would be better if he issues a moratorium. At present all that is required for a new hotel to be built is that they perform a new study - if need be, and a permit will be issued,” said Suryawijaya. Permits for new hotels, said the bespectacled man, should only be issued when existing hotels have a better occupancy rate, so that room rates will be more stable and conditions can improve, unlike the present situation in which hotels are frequently engaged in tariff wars. “When hotel occupancy rates are good - running at approximately 80 percent, permits for the construction of new hotels can start to be issued again. That way the number of tourist arrivals will better match the number of hotel rooms,” he said. According to the Chairman of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Badung, the current growth

rate for hotel construction still excessive and causes unfair competition. “We do not want Badung to become a cheap destination. When the room occupancy rates average less than 60 percent, it is hazardous for everyone,” he explained while adding that Bali relies heavily on tourism as its main source of revenue. (kmb27)

Students honour Saraswati Day in unique way BANGLI - Saraswati Day, which fell on Saniscara Umanis Wuku Watugunung (May 2), honours knowledge and wisdom as is usually celebrated with prayers accompanied with the presentation of offerings. This year however, SMPN 3 Bangli junior high school held a special procession for this festivity that is held every six months, with the addition of a mapeed or gebogan parade, as a way to express gratitude to Creator - especially Goddess Saraswati, symbol of knowledge.

On Saturday (May 2), hundreds of students lined the roads of Taman Bali village. A number of students marched from Kilobar Square at Taman Bali, located about 500 meters from the school. The beautifully arranged gebogan and wooden platform was carried on the heads of the participants, as they walked toward the Padmasana shrine at the local school, which was then purified by the temple priest. After the purificatory rite of sprinkling holy water, worship then began. Deputy Principal in charge of Student Affairs of the SMPN 3 Bangli, Dewa Ketut Putra, when met after the prayers said that this is the first time that such a parade had been held. Previously, students only welcomed Saraswati Day with a gebogan making competition that would then be followed by worship at the Padmasana shrine at the school. This year there was a mapped procession that hundreds of students joined as well as the carrying of 18 gebogan that each class at the school made added a different nuance to the celebrations. “Previously the celebration only involved regular prayers and the presentation of gebogan directly to the padmasana shrine at school,” he said. Ketut Putra, also explained that the parade is not just an ordinary ceremony, but is an expression of profound gratitude to God, especially Goddess Saraswati. In terms of culture, the parade preserves the tradition of carrying holy times on ones head, which the younger generation rarely does anymore,” he explained. Putra added that the gebogan is not only carried by one single person, but is carried in turn by all the students. Similarly, this celebration aims to foster a sense of togetherness and fraternity that is increasingly fading in Bali. “The students carry the gebogan in turns as a way to increase their sense of community,” he concluded. Against such conditions, the government seems to be unable to do much. It happens because the village is not legally recognized by a binding legal rule. As the government does not want such condition to last longer, the Culture and Tourism Agency has conducted a monitoring and evaluation of the

villages considered worthy to bear the predicate as tourism village. As a result, a total of 21 villages are considered worthy to bear the predicate of tourism village. “We’ve been doing monitoring and evaluation. Of the 21 villages, they cannot entirely be proposed into tourism village in 2015,” he said. According to him, the consideration to propose a tourism village is done through a rigorous selection. Some indicators in the selection process include the existence of tourism awareness group (Darwis—Ed), high community participation, availability of tourist accommodation, decent

access to tourist destination and availability of a unique heritage. After going through the selection process, most villages do not meet the predefined indicators. Nevertheless, the Culture and Tourism Agency must establish the villages that are feasible to become tourism village. Of the ten villages selected, Sambangan and Ambengan village (Sukasada subdistrict) and Sekumpul and Sudaji village (Sawan subdistrict) are proposed to be designated as an object of tourism village in North Bali. “These villages are already worth being a tourism village and we immediately propose them to obtain

legal recognition,” he said. On the other hand, Suyasa said that after determining the tourism village his agency will not stop to that effort. The tourism village determined will continue to be developed and provided with mentoring program to strengthen human resources of the management. In the long-term, his party will perform the setup program for the infrastructure and supporting facilities. “We will not just set up and leave them unkempt, but we do a good follow-up program either involving human resource improvement or infrastructures strengthening at villages,” he said. An estimated 800 migrants drowned last month when their boat capsized off Libya with hundreds of them locked in the hold by smugglers. After that, European Union officials at an emergency meeting agreed to beef up the Triton rescue mission with boats and patrol aircraft contributed by several countries. Italy, often pressing nearby cargo ships into service, coordinates the rescue operations. S. Korea confirms college student held in N. Korea

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea confirmed on Sunday that North Korea detained a South Korean student of New York University, but said it was still unclear whether the 21-year-old New Jersey resident attempted to enter the North illegally. An official from South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles affairs with North Korea, said his department was still trying to gather information on Won Moon Joo’s travels and the circumstances of his arrest. “Our judgment is that Joo is being held in North Korea, but we are still trying to confirm the details of how he got arrested,” he said on condition of anonymity, citing office rules. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency said Saturday that Joo was arrested on April 22 after trying to illegally enter North Korea by crossing the Amnok River from the Chinese border town of Dandong. A spokesman for New York University, John Beckman, confirmed that Joo was a junior at NYU’s Stern School of Business, but that he was not taking classes this semester and the university was unaware of his travels. He said the university was in touch with the U.S. State Department and the South Korean Embassy. North Korea has occasionally detained South Koreans, Americans and other foreigners, often on accusations of spying, in what analysts say are attempts to wrest outside concessions. In March, North Korea announced that it had detained two South Korean citizens over alleged espionage. It has been holding another South Korean man since late 2013 on suspicion of spying and allegedly trying to set up underground churches in the North. He was sentenced last year to life in prison with hard labor. Also last year, the North released three Americans — two of whom entered the country on tourist visas — and Kenneth Bae, a KoreanAmerican missionary who was convicted of “anti-state” crimes.(ap)

WASHINGTON — Optimism about the job market lifted U.S. consumer sentiment in April to its second-highest level since 2007. The University of Michigan’s sentiment index rose to 95.9 from 93 in March. Only January’s reading of 98.1 has been higher since 2007, the year the Great Recession began. Over the past five months, sentiment has been, on average, at its highest level since 2004. Richard Curtin, chief economist of the Michigan survey, attributed the April increase to optimism over consistently low inflation and low interest rates and improving prospects for jobs and incomes. Curtin said consumers expect interest rates to rise from current historically low levels but only modestly. And they expect any economic damage from higher rates to be offset by the benefits of more jobs and incomes. Since March 2014, the U.S. economy has produced a healthy 3.1 million job gains. The government said Wednesday that the economy grew at an annual rate of just 0.2 percent from January through March. But economists expect growth to strengthen in the spring. “Consumers appear to be shrugging off recently disappointing economic data and stock market choppiness,” Jim Baird, chief investment officer for Plante Moran Financial Advisors, said in a research note. “Despite evidence that the economy slowed considerably in the first quarter, sentiment remains relatively high and suggests that the important consumer spending engine isn’t at risk of stalling.” (ap)

Indonesia strives to Russia signs up to $100 bn BRICS stamp out thyphoid fund to rival IMF

MOSCOW - Russian President Vladimir Putin ratified an accord Saturday to set up a $100-billion reserve fund for the so-called BRICS -- the five leading emerging economies that include Russia, China, Brazil, India and South Africa. Moscow is expected to contribute $18 billion to the reserve, well behind the $41 billion China has promised to pour into the fund that was set up after an agreement signed in July 2014 in Brazil. The emerging economies also plan to form their own international bank based in Shanghai to challenge western dominance over international money markets.

“The accord on the creation of a common reserve fund for BRICS countries has been ratified,” a document from the Kremlin quoted by RIA Novosti news agency said. The fund is meant to shield the BRICS against “short-term liquidity pressures” and promote greater cooperation between the five member countries. Russia -- which has suffered huge currency fluctuations since the outbreak of the crisis in Ukraine -- sees the fund as an alternative to international financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank that are dominated by the United States. The BRICS countries between them account for 40 percent of the world’s population, and a fifth of the planet’s GDP. (afp)

NUSA DUA - The Indonesian government is trying to eradicate typhoid, which continues to be a threat especially in developing countries, a government official said.

Those aged between 5 and 24 years are susceptible to the disease the most, Director of the Center for Biomedical Affairs and Basic Health Technology of the Ministry of Health, Pretty Multihartina, stated at the International Conference on Typhoid and Non-Typhoidal Salmonella in Nusa Dua, Bali, held over the weekend. Referring to a research on basic health carried out in 2007 by the Health Research and Development Agency, the directorate found that 1.6 percent of some 900 thousand re-

spondents of different ages admitted to have been diagnosed with typhoid at least once. The research was conducted through telephonic interviews in 33 provinces. As the disease is still a health problem in developing countries in Asia and Africa, they need to establish cooperation to develop selective diagnostic devices and vaccinations for affordable treatment. The problem indicates that vaccines are needed for the short term, although the World Health Organization recommends that they be used at an early stage. Indonesia alone has state pharmaceutical company Bio Farma that produces typhoid vaccines, which are exported to countries across the world.

The typhoid vaccines are expected to provide effective protection to the high-risk group as they can be consumed by children since they are six months old. The vaccines are expected to prevent nearly 90 percent of typhoid cases and to save as many as 190 thousand people every year. Moreover, health experts from the Coalition against Typhoid, which is part of the Sabin Vaccine Institute of the United States, noted that some 21 million people in the world are affected by typhoid, which leads to 216 thousand deaths every year. Children under 15 years of age make up the largest segment of these cases. In addition, non-typhoidal salmonella causes some 3.4 million cases and 681,316 deaths annually. (ant)

Pilot to fly solar plane across Pacific for 5 days, 5 nights

BEIJING — A pilot said Sunday that he is anxious but excited about flying a solar plane solo from China to Hawaii on the longest leg of the first attempt to fly around the world without a drop of fuel. André Borschberg, 62, is due to fly over the Pacific Ocean for five days and five nights in the plane that has more than 17,000 solar cells on its wings to power its motors and recharge its batteries for nighttime flying. The Solar Impulse 2 set off from Abu Dhabi in March and has stopped in Oman, India and Myanmar. Borschberg and another Swiss pilot, Bertrand Piccard, are taking turns flying the single-seater Swiss plane during a five-month journey to promote renewable energy use. The 8,175-kilometer (5,079mile) flight from Nanjing in eastern China to Hawaii — which may take off Thursday, depending on weather — is the seventh of 12 flights. None of the previous legs were more than 20 hours — compared with an estimated flight time of 120 hours to Hawaii. “It’s the most challenging, yes, in the sense that we never flew over the oceans,” Borschberg said in a phone interview from Nanjing. “There are of course also question marks with the type of airplane we have, is it capable to fly solo with this type of energy, and of course the challenge is on the pilot side as well ... can I stay alert for this leg and be able to pilot this airplane, can I keep my energy at the right level, can I keep my spirits, my mindset to get this airplane to Hawaii.”

The aircraft will climb to the altitude of Mount Everest, almost 9,000 meters (29,500 feet), during the day to get more sunlight, recharge the batteries and store more energy. At nighttime, the plane will fly lower, at a minimum of 1,000 meters (3,000 feet). The pilot will experience temperatures ranging from 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) in the morning to minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit) early in the evening while the plane is still high up. “It’s winter and summer every day in the cockpit,” said Borschberg, who flew military jets for 25 years as a reserve pilot in the Swiss army and is an entrepreneur by profession. He plans to take periods of rest of 20 minutes up to eight times a day, but said he doesn’t know if the weather or turbulence will let him. Borschberg said the plane has a “virtual co-pilot” that is a stabilization tool. It will sound an alarm to wake him if the aircraft does something unplanned. The cockpit is too small to stand

in, although the seat can recline into a horizontal position to allow him to lie down and practice yoga. He also plans to use breathing techniques and meditation to help him through the long journey. He said that when flying, he focuses on how he feels as well as the situation in the air, so that the journey wasn’t just about exploring how to cross the Pacific using solar energy. “You don’t have the pressure of time so with this airplane you can really live the present moment,” he said. “It’s almost an inner voyage, at the end it’s not so much exploring the Pacific ... it’s also exploring myself.” The Si2 aircraft has a wingspan of 72 meters (236 feet), spanning larger than a Boeing 747 jumbo jet. At about 2,300 kilograms (5,000 pounds), the Si2 weighs about as much as a minivan or mid-sized truck. After Hawaii, the plane is slated to stop in Phoenix and New York before flying over the Atlantic Ocean. It will then stop either in southern Europe or North Africa, depending on weather conditions. WARSAW, Poland — A man died after being hit by a rubber bullet and 14 police officers were injured during clashes that erupted during a Polish league football match in the south of the country. Supporters of the local Concordia Knurow team stormed onto the pitch during Saturday’s match against Ruch Radzionkow, with the home team trailing 4-1. A 27-year-old man was struck by a rubber bullet when police fired at the attackers. More rioting broke out around the hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. Arab coalition ‘reconnaissance’ troops in Yemen

SANAA — Yemeni military officials say at least 20 Arab coalition troops have landed in the southern coastal city of Aden on a “reconnaissance” mission. The officials and witnesses reached in Aden said the blackclad and masked troops landed Sunday in a central area between the city’s neighborhood of al-Mansoura and the airport. They said helicopter gunships hovered above the landing area. There were no reports of fighting between the Arab troops and Iranian-allied Shiite rebels and their supporters, who have for weeks been trying to capture the strategic port city on the Arabian Sea. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren’t authorized to brief journalists. Defending Aden are militiamen loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled Aden to neighboring Saudi Arabia in March. (ap)

Rescuers find 3 survivors in Nepal 8 days after quake KATHMANDU, Nepal — An official says rescuers have found three survivors in a mountainous village in Nepal, eight days since the earthquake. Surya Prasad Upadhaya, a government administrator, says two men and a woman were pulled out Sunday from near Syauli village. They have been taken to a nearby military hospital for treatment. Other details are not immediately known. The district is the worst hit by the magnitude-7.8 earthquake with the highest number of casualties. It is located about 60 kilometers (35 miles) west of the capital, Kathmandu. (ap)

Economic ministers less sensitive to people’s basic needs JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo’s economic ministers are less sensitive to the people’s basic needs, Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) for inter-agencies relations, Bambang Soesatyo said. Bambang Soesatyo said Joko Widodo’s economic team was not sensitive to the people’s basic needs after the abolition of energy subsidies. “Joko Widodo needs to expedite his agenda on cabinet reshuffle by changing his economic team,” Soesatyo said. He said that Jokowi, as the president is popularly called, should reshuffle his cabinet because the popularity of his government was currently going down. Soesatyo quoted a survey result which revealed that about 66.6 percent of the public were not satisfied with the government’s performance because the prices of basic neces-

sities had been increasing significantly. The prices of sugar and electricity were on the rise and fuel oil prices were also fluctuating. Soesatyo, who is also a member of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR), stated that the economic ministers of Jokowi’s Working Cabinet were not able to adjust to the working rhythm after Jokowi adopted a policy on the abolition of energy subsidies. The policy has direct impact on the people namely as it left the retail prices of the fuel oils to the market mechanism. As a result, the people felt significant impacts because the policy affected the prices of basic neces-

sities and transportation service fares which can any time increase or go down. “In such a situation, the government should not remain silent. As a regulator, it should be present in the market to stimulate and stabilize prices and goods supplies so that they will be under control and within the financial reach of the people,” he said. Bodies of Australians executed in Indonesia arrive home

SYDNEY - Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he was confident Australia could restore its relationship with Indonesia despite anger over the execution of two drug convicts, whose bodies reportedly returned home Saturday. Andrew Chan, 31, and Myuran Sukumaran, 34, were killed by firing squad on Wednesday over their role in a plot to bring heroin to Australia from the Indonesian resort island of Bali, despite international pleas to Jakarta for clemency. Abbott said he understood the dismay and anger over the executions but respected Indonesia’s sovereignty. “It really was terrible that these cruel and unnecessary executions went ahead,” he told reporters in Sydney. “Our anger and our grief, sadly, is not going to bring those two young men back. “The important thing now is not

to do any thing that would make a difficult situation worse.” The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was unable to confirm reports that the men’s bodies were on a flight which touched down early Saturday in Sydney. The flight was carrying Sukumaran’s parents, brother and sister and Chan’s wife Febyanti Herewila, who married him on the eve of his execution. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said Chan’s mother and brother were understood to have wanted to travel back with his body, but were unable to due to a hold-up with the repatriation. They returned on Friday. Chan and Sukumaran were among seven foreigners and one Indonesian executed in Indonesia in the early hours of Wednesday. The Australians had spent a decade in prison for their role in masterminding the so-called ‘Bali Nine’ group of smugglers, during

which time Chan had become a Christian pastor and Sukumaran had studied art. The executions have cast a shadow over Australia’s relationship with its important neighbour Indonesia, with Abbott withdrawing Canberra’s ambassador to Indonesia. But the prime minister said Saturday that it remained important for the country’s future that the relationship with Jakarta be restored. “I am confident that we will be able to rebuild the relationship,” Abbott said. “It’s important to Australia, it’s important to Indonesia and it’s important to the wider world that Australia and Indonesia’s friendship is strong and growing in the months and years ahead.” Australia and Indonesia are key allies in counter-terrorism efforts, while Indonesia is also a significant economic partner. Paul lifts Clippers past Spurs, 111109 in Game 7

LOS ANGELES — Chris Paul banked in a shot with a second left to lift the Los Angeles Clippers to a thrilling 111-109 victory over San Antonio in Game 7 on Saturday that eliminated the defending NBA champion Spurs from the playoffs. After Spurs veteran Tim Duncan made two free throws to tie it with 8.8 seconds left, Paul drove the right side. He originally was covered by Danny Green before Duncan came over to help. MANILA — Sadness and disappointment gripped Filipinos after Manny Pacquiao’s defeat in his much-anticipated fight against American Floyd Mayweather Jr. but they still considered the boxing icon a national hero. Gymnasiums and other public venues where the

12-round fight was shown for free on Sunday lunchtime local time were quickly vacated after it was announced Pacquiao lost by unanimous decision. Herminio Coloma, a spokesman for President Benigno Aquino III, said “the country still holds its

head high in the admirable fight of our National Fist.” He said Aquino thanked Pacquiao, who is also a congressman, for being “an inspiration to every Filipino who is struggling with life’s challenges to achieve a bright future.” Some fans said Pacquiao should retire from boxing while others demanded a rematch. For thousands at a plaza in Marikina city, part of metropolitan Manila, the party mood was dampened not just by his loss but also a sudden downpour. Roland Purificacion, a 45-yearold pedicab driver who watched the fight on a huge television screen outside the Quiapo Church in central Manila, was disappointed but spoke for many of his compatriots when he said Pacquiao “is still the people’s champ. He is still our hero.” Security guard Melchor Yaba, 48, said he lost 5,000 pesos ($113), a half month’s salary, betting on Pacquiao. “I can’t accept that he lost.
