LOS ANGELES - Meryl Streep is an actress who can seemingly resurrect any cultural icon, from Margaret Thatcher to Julia Child — but will Princess Leia be one of them? An online petition calling for the 21-time Oscar nominee to replace Carrie Fisher in Star Wars: Episode IX has gained a surprising amount of steam, with more than 8,900 supporters. The petition’s author, who goes by the handle Chill M, argues that the role of Leia is too important to be dropped in the final installment of the new Skywalker trilogy, even though Fisher (who created the role in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope) died before shooting began. “As the fans of Star Wars and Carrie Fisher, we really want Leia to shine in Episode IX and we certainly do not want her to be written out of the film abruptly without a reasonable plot,” writes the petition’s author. “Therefore, recasting Leia is a more ideal option for us and we believe that Meryl Streep is an ideal candidate to play Leia.” The author’s argument is based both on Streep’s many accolades as an actress and her friendship with Fisher, plus the fact that she played a character based on Fisher in Postcards from the Edge, Mike Nichols’s adaptation of Fisher’s semiautobiographical novel. Unfortunately for the petition’s supporters, Streep is not planning any trips to a galaxy far, far away. A rep for Streep told Entertainment Tonight that rumors that she is in consideration for the role of Princess Leia are “untrue.” That’s no shock, considering that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has stated outright that Leia will not appear in Episode IX. Though the princess turned general was originally going to be a “really significant” part of the story, according to producer Kennedy, Fisher’s death necessitated script changes. “We pretty much started over,” she told Entertainment

Weekly in April of last year. Granted, Episode IX has been through numerous script changes since Fisher’s death, as well as a change of director from Colin Trevorrow to J.J. Abrams of The Force Awakens. But such a weighty decision as Leia’s fate is unlikely to change from draft to draft. Bob Iger has stated that Fisher will not be resurrected digitally (as her younger self was for Rogue One). Recasting hasn’t officially been ruled out — but considering Fisher’s devoted fan base, the tragedy of her unexpected death, and the fact that she played Leia in five previous Star Wars movies, recasting the role would cause a controversy that Lucasfilm certainly isn’t interested in igniting. Invalid votes take 2nd place in Egypt election

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi’s victory in last week’s election was never in doubt, but the vote produced a surprise runner-up — an unusually large number of invalid ballots, suggesting a possible protest vote against el-Sisi or the election itself. Official figures released Monday by the election commission gave el-Sisi 97 per cent of the vote, securing him a second, four-year term in office following an election in which he ran virtually unopposed. His sole challenger, Moussa Mustafa Moussa, a little-known politician who made no effort to challenge him, received 656,534 votes, or 2.92 per cent. Moussa’s tally was outdone by the 1.76 million invalid ballots, which would have amounted to 7.27 per cent of votes cast, a considerably higher percentage than in the last two presidential elections: 4.07 per cent in 2014 and 3.1 per cent in the 2012 runoff. Critics denounced the latest election as a farce because a string of potentially serious challengers were either forced out of the race or arrested. Moussa stepped in the last minute to spare the government the

embarrassment of a one-candidate election that would have resembled the referendums long held by the region’s autocrats. Authorities went to great lengths to encourage turnout, hoping to lend the vote credibility. In the end, turnout was 41.05 per cent, down from 47.45 per cent when el-Sisi won his first election in 2014. “I invalidated my vote because it was not really an election. Perancak Temple

A battle to dismiss Ngurah Raksasa

PERANCAK Temple is located at the southern tip of Jembrana subdistrict, exactly on the coastal area of Perancak village. This temple is one of the dang kahyangan temples or a temple to tribute ancient sages located in Bali. It is closely related to other similar temples in Jembrana such as the Rambutsiwi, Jati, Prapat Agung, and Majapahit Temple. Dhang Hyang Nirartha or Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh from Java Island when entering this area should fight against the powerful ruler of Tanjung Ketapang or Perancak at that time named I Gusti Ngurah Raksasa. According to a number of literati and priests of Perancak Temple, the temple whose anniversary falls on Budha Umanis Medangsia

is inseparable from Dang Hyang Nirartha when came to Bali. Before Nirartha came to Jembrana, Perancak or Tanjung Ketapang had been

ruled by I Gusti Ngurah Raksasa. On arrival at Perancak through the estuary of Perancak directly facing the southern sea, the ruler of Perancak, Gusti Ngurah Raksasa tested the ability of Dhang Hyang Nirartha. He was asked to be subject to the rules that every immigrant had to obey, namely worshipping him manifested through the great stone of worship in the region. At that time, they mutually showed off the shakti power (magical power) as requested by Ngurah Raksasa and this was fulfilled by Nirartha.

However, before completing the worship, the stone used as a shrine broke into pieces. After that, Ngurah Raksasa acknowledged the power of Dang Hyang Nirartha and the arrogant nature of the Perancak ruler finally dissolved. Ngurah Raksasa then moved northward of the hill. Because of his presence, surrounding people then named the region as Sawe Raksasa until now. According to stories, the name Sawe was originally from the soul referred to Gusti Ngurah Raksasa, the predecessor of Perancak. Until these days, in the area of Perancak Temple is also built the Perancak Temple sanctum for the descendants of Ngurah Raksasa. Additionally, there are two crocodile statues at the entrance to Perancak Temple. According to some temple priests at Perancak, the statue describes the situation of Perancak estuary at the time where swamps were filled with dozens of crocodiles. Formerly, the land of the current temple was a swamp area. Bali government also helps secure the Perancak estuary from erosion by constructing revetment. In the temple area, there is also a Wajo well used for beji or source of holy water. Previously, the Perancak estuary was the entrance of immigrants including the Bugis sailors who sought to trade. They landed in the estuary and the well was used for their drinking water source. In order not to use salty or brackish water, the merchants from Wajo (South Sulawesi) also helped make the well. When the well was completed, the water was not salty

or brackish, whereas the well is located in the middle of the mouth of the river and the sea. Until now, based on the guidance of Dhang Hyang Nirartha the water is used as holy water source (beji). Every temple anniversary (pujawali), six villages nearby are involved as supporting devotees (pengempon) of Perancak Temple, namely Perancak, Budeng, Air Kuning, Dangin Tukadaya and Sangkaragung. The Wajo well is taken advantage as holy water source needed during the ceremonies at local temple. Water for purificatory rite of ritual paraphernalia is also taken from the well located about 400 meters west of the Perancak Temple. This area is also called Taman Temple (Beji Temple). Location of the temple has moved up to twice. Until now, in the outermost courtyard of the temple there are still some buildings that have not been built. He also explained about the miracle on the pujawali several years ago coinciding with prolonged drought. At that time, the well water was dry, so that temple priests and ritual committee had been made confused because before the pujawali procession there must be a purificatory rite in the Wajo well. Finally, the ritual committee decided to carry water, but when the procession was carried out whereas the water had been carried with a bucket, a magical incident occurred where the well contained water. So, the water in the bucket prepared was not utilized. Strangely, once the ritual was over and the water was taken, the well dried out again. (olo)

Closer look at waste processing at Temesi landfill

GIANYAR - Thousands of cubic of garbage in Gianyar district are sent to Temesi landfill every day. Thankfully, the landfill has owned a Mitra Gianyar Bagus Waste Bank that processes waste into compost fertilizer. Manager of Mitra Gianyar Bagus Waste Bank, I Wayan Cakra, said the waste bank was established in 2014 with the Decree of Gianyar Regent. The waste bank managed under the Pemilihan Sampah Temesi Foundation processes waste into compost every day. “Actually, composting has been going on since 2004. Well, this compost processing then developed into

a business unit of Mitra Gianyar Bagus Waste Bank,” he said. Ironically, the garbage disposed to landfill has not been sorted out, between organic and non-organic. So, his foundation must re-do the sorting by mobilizing 73 workers. “Of the 73 people, 50 people are outsourcing workers of composting, while 23 others are local people of Temesi belonging to the worker of the waste bank,” he said. Dozens of the workers do this every day by sorting out, namely conjuring up the organic waste into compost and non-organic waste is collected to be sold to the

waste bank. “Garbage in the form of plastic, cardboard and bottles is purchased by waste bank to be further sold to collectors from Java for recycling, while the organic waste is converted into compost and sold to the community,” he said. In addition to being constrained by waste sorting, Cakra complained about harmful garbage that is difficult to be recycled such as tampon, pampers and spring bed. “They cannot be processed or recycled, so this type of garbage must be stockpiled in particular landfill at Temesi as they can damage the environment,” he said. Google’s self-driving Waymo cars will be picking you up soon

AUSTIN - A self-driving car from Google (GOOG, GOOGL) may be coming to a street near you. But you won’t be able to buy it, and you’ll have to wait longer to get a ride if snow regularly features in your city’s winter forecasts. John Krafcik, CEO of of Google’s self-driving car unit Waymo, laid out the company’s ambitions and its potential obstacles in two SXSW appearances at SXSW, an onstage interview with Vice News correspondent Evan McMorris-Santoro and an evening chat with comedian Adam Carolla recorded for Carolla’s podcast. The potential promise here is huge — safer roads for everyone, and consequence-free napping behind the wheel for people willing to pay about what a human-driven Uber or Lyft costs today. “We’re working to build the world’s most experienced driver,” Krafcik said in opening his sales pitch. “Everything that we learn in one of our cars gets passed to all of our cars.” Waymo’s software has already driven 5 million miles in U.S. cities, including an “early rider” test in Phoenix using modified Chrysler (FCAU) Pacifica minivans that began taking signups last April. Waymo has since grown confident enough to remove the self-driving-car equivalent of training wheels: a human “safety driver” at the wheel as a backup. Powering the vehicle’s self-driving capabilities is an array of cameras, radar and Lidar sensors, many on the car’s roof, which detect everything nearby from other vehicles and pedestrians to cyclists. At the evening event, Krafcik displayed a Lidar view of the event venue, a bar on the east side of Austin, showing people as glowing outlines. Seeing himself lit up as if by radiation, Carolla joked “I think I just got testicular cancer, so thanks for that.” In both talks, Krafcik emphasized that Waymo’s cars aren’t connected — they don’t need a 5G wireless link to go anywhere. “The car has everything it needs to drive on the car itself,” he told McMorris-Santoro. “There are no signals coming from outer space or something telling it to turn right.” The resulting ride may not be too exciting but is safe. “It doesn’t speed,” Krafcik added. “It’s very persnickety about following the rules.” The Waymo system also thinks well ahead, which he said invalidated the question of how a car would decide which pedestrian to hit in a crash. “We can see three football fields down the road,” he said. “We would come to a stop before we ran into these folks.” He added that the software does have “a hierarchy of concern” about the relative vulnerability of other road users. Presumably, an awareness that humans are squishier than cars would at least direct it to take out a Prius before a pedestrian. Tuesday evening, Krafcik cited another benefit. “Just a few of those cars provide a really good example for human drivers to follow,” he said, citing studies showing people drove better after the addition of autonomous cars. Waymo’s system represents a major advance over the semi-autonomous systems of Tesla (TSLA) and GM’s (GM) Cadillac subsidiary, both of which demand continued human attention. Krafcik said passengers quickly set aside hangups over needing to trust a computer completely — a Waymo clip shows Phoenix testers taking selfies and naps. Waymo plans to have service in every major metropolitan area by 2028, with thousands of cars driving themselves by 2020. Its rollout will begin across sunnier climates first, though. “Snow and ice are challenging for our current system.” Krafcik said Tuesday morning. For example, the car’s sensors don’t have defrosters, although the next revision will add them. But even then, Krafcik cautioned that Waymo cars won’t be able to cope with the sort of weather — blizzards, torrential rain storms — that keep self-aware humans off the roads. In the same vein, he asked that states refrain from regulating Waymo’s software more strictly than the human sort, notwithstanding anxiety about artificial intelligence. “Hold us to the same standards as human drivers,” he requested. Waymo will offer these cars as a service, telling Carolla that a ride would cost about the same as an Uber or Lyft: “a couple of bucks a mile.” Waymo has no plan to make or sell cars itself. “We’ve always considered ourselves, in this space, as enablers of the incumbents,” Krafcik said in the morning. Tegenungan waterfalls management hopes that collpased road can be fixed soon

GIANYAR - Those who manage the Tegenungan waterfalls in Kemenuh village hope the collapsed road in Sukawati village that leads to the waterfalls can be repaired soon. “Currently the waterfalls can only be reached from Batuan”, said chief of Tegenungan, Gusti Raka, on Friday (Mar. 30).

Since the road along the bridge to the south collapsed, there have been far less tourists visiting Tegunungan waterfalls. “We have seen a decline of local visitors of about 50 percent. Usually many people come here for Banyupinaruh, but this yeas there were very few visitors”, he said. The number of foreign visitors has however remained stable at around 1,800 to 2,000 people per day. The foreign tourists who visit the waterfalls are mostly part of organized tours that include watching the barong dance,

passing through Batuan then coming to the waterfalls after visiting Kintamani. These buses have been using the road north of Tegenungan”, he explained. Nevertheless, Raka still hopes that the southern road to Tegenungan can be repaired soon and that a revetment will be put in place to prevent landslides in futur. “We hope the government can work on it as soon as possible”, he added. Head of the Gianyar Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), Nyoman Nuadi, however explained that the road will not be able to be repaired in 2018 as the disaster that caused the damage occurred after the regional budget plan (APBD) allocations were decided. It will take too long to wait for the budget amendment. “The solution is to propose that the road be repaired using funds from the regional budget plan 2019. I have already submitted a proposal for

the repairs”, said Nuadi. His agency also tried to coordinate with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Gianyar to request a budget for raod repair from the central government because the damage was caused by a natural disaster. So far, his agency has applied for assistance to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). “If we do not receive funding from the central government, then we must rely in the main regional budget plan 2019”, he explained. Based on the results of a survey conducted by the Public Works, the budget required for hate road repair is about IDR 40 billion. Since the damaged road is steep, the repairs must be made all the way to the bottom. Raka is asking the local community to be patient. “Please be patient, the government will definitely make repairs”, he said. (kmb35)

Ten vocational schools unable to hold independent exam

GIANYAR — A total of 5,140 students of vocational schools (SMK) from 29 schools took the first computer-based national examination (UNBK) of day one in Gianyar district on Monday (Apr. 2). Unfortunately, not all vocational schools in this region can implement the UNBK independently. Approximately ten private vocational schools have to join with other schools to implement the national exam this time. This was expressed by the Unit Head of Gianyar High and Vocational School (SMA/SMK), I Wayan Adi Sucita. He said there are three schools becoming the venue of the vocational school computerbased exam, namely the SMPN 1 Gianyar junior high school, SMAN 1 Payangan high school and SMK SMR Ubud. “A total of ten schools attend the computer-based national exam at these three schools,” he said. He explained the national exam at SMPN 1 Gianyar is followed by SMK PGRI 2 Gianyar with 65 students, SMK Par Budaya Bedulu (155 students), SMK Maharishi (47 students) and SMK Saraswati Sukawati (31 students). Besides, there are also SMK Singamandawa

(5 students), SMK Saraswati 1(3 students) and SMK Saraswati 3 (5 students). “The total number of participants at SMPN 1 Gianyar amounts to 311 students,” he said. Meanwhile, computer room of SMAN 1 Payangan is only borrowed by students of SMK Negeri 2 Tegallalang for the implementation of national exam. Then, computer room at SMK SMSR Ubud is borrowed by students of SMK Santi Yoga and SMK P. Sila Candra. “The ten schools just borrow a room to another school for the computer-based national exam, while 19 other schools can implement it independently,” he explained. Viral in social media, a photo of student camping at Tuluk Biyu Temple

BANGLI - Social media were surprised by the photo broadcast of students camping inside Pucak Tuluk Biyu Temple area in Mount Abang, Suter village, Kintamani. On the photo caption in circulation, the tourist alleged to have contaminated the temple sanctity is a student. Of the three photos circulating on social media, a photo shows a blue tent standing right in front of a shrine. Around the tents are seen some people suspected to be students and the locals. Meanwhile, another photo shows a man cleaning up the tent. Allegedly the tent was cleared after students caught camping in the tent rebuked by local residents. Chief of LWG Abang Erawang, Nengah Suratnata, when confirmed last Monday justified the information about the circulation of student photos camping in the temple area. He acknowledged the location in the photo is indeed true at the Tuluk Biyu Batur Temple. However, he claimed not to know for sure when it happened as he just got the information on Monday afternoon. He explained that according to the procedures imposed by the management, every tourist wishing to climb to the Mount Abang area will be given direction about the location that can be used for camping. The directions are given when visitors or travelers make registration in the post. In the appeal given, the management will usually not allow female visitors who are menstruating to climb because the Mount Abang area is made sacred. Along the road to the peak of Mount Abang, there are a number of temples very much sanctified by society. With the occurrence of student camping in the area of Pucak Tuluk Biyu Temple Batur as in the photos circulating in social media, Suratnata admitted that his side will increase the supervision and appeal to visitors. The South Korean Agency for Defense Development partnered with the Hanwha Corporation, and spent three years and the equivalent of around $418 million developing the new weapon. South Korea already has licensebuilt an arsenal of over two hundred MGM-140 ATACMS missiles, which can be fired from an M270 multiple-rocket-launcher vehicle and strike targets up to 190 miles away. However, the ATACMS is both too expensive and insufficiently accurate to counter the hundreds of North Korean artillery systems entrenched for a crossborder bombardment. Korean journalist Lim Changwon characterizes this new Korean Tactical Surface-to-Surface Missile as “a simplified version of the MGM-140”, which it visually resembles. Though the KTSSM-1 has a shorter range of just seventyfive miles—still adequate for the

counterbattery role—its GPSguidance system is five times more precise, with half of all shots landing within a two-meter radius of the target, instead of ten meters for the ATACMS. The KTSSM-1 “Artillery Killer” consists of a fixed launcher that can discharge all four of its tactical ballistic missiles in a matter of seconds. Reportedly, the launcher and missiles combined cost roughly $1.9 million each. The missile’s shaped thermal warhead would allow it to penetrate up to 1.5 meters of intervening concrete, and a graphic at a defense expo suggests the missile can maneuver to enter the mouth of a cave. The Republic of Korea military has released a video of a KTSSM test that shows the ballistic missile effortlessly penetrating the ceiling of an underground bunker, triggering a massive Michael Bay–style fireball that consumes the entire subterranean complex from within. According to a Korean military spokesperson, the KTSSM-1 would be used to silence Koksan guns and 240-millimeter MRL systems along the DMZ. However, the government also announced it had developed a second KTSSM-2 system for attacking larger, fixed missile assets. There is limited information available on the KTSSM-2, but it reportedly is a self-propelled system and disposes of two types of munitions: a Block I missile employing a thermal penetrating warhead, and a Block II that utilizes unitary high-explosive payloads. According to the South Korean military, the KTSSM-2 would be tasked with blasting KN-09 three-hundred-millimeter multiplerocket launchers and Kn-02 tactical ballistic-missile launchers, a reverse-engineered Russian Tochka ballistic missile. Authorities also imposed a curfew in some towns in southern Kashmir and in the old parts of the disputed region’s main city of Srinagar, the urban center of protests and clashes against Indian rule. Shops and businesses closed in other areas where no security restrictions were in place. Separatist leaders who challenge India’s sovereignty over Kashmir called for a shutdown on Monday and Tuesday to protest the killings. They also said one of the civilians who died in southern Shopian near a gunbattle on Sunday was being used as a human shield against rebels by the Indian army. An army officer, who declined to be named in keeping with army regulations, rejected the accusation and said the civilian was killed in the crossfire with insurgents. In the past, such allegations have rarely been probed, and some accused military officials have been rewarded. According to hospital officials, many of the injured were hit by shotgun pellets in the eyes, causing widespread anger across Kashmir. LONDON - Surprise monthly increase comes despite sector experiencing its weakest quarter in a year. Shaking off concerns that heavy snowfall from the “beast from the east” would trigger a slowdown, the UK manufacturing sector maintained a steady pace of growth in March. The Markit/Cips UK manufacturing PMI barometer of factory sentiment showed activity jumped to 55.1 from 55 in February, beating economists’ forecasts for a fall in the growth rate. A figure above 50 indicates expansion on the index, which is used by the Bank of England to monitor the health of the economy. The latest PMI figures show manufacturing production rose for the 20th successive month, as companies continued to report solid inflows of new work from both domestic and overseas markets. But the performance completes a relatively weak quarter for the industry after a mini-boom at the end of last year. Rob Dobson, a director at IHS Markit, said the latest reading suggested overall production growth would fall by more than half in the first quarter compared with the final three months of 2017. Manufacturing output growth had remained steadily above 1% towards the end of last year but may have fallen to about 0.5%, according to economists. “The key question is whether growth can now be sustained, albeit at a lower level, into the coming months,” Dobson said. There are already some positive signs, with the survey of manufacturers used for compiling the PMI figures showing almost 55% of companies forecast that output will be higher in 12 months’ time. The rate of growth also remains fairly strong by past standards, which experts said should help the economy to overcome weak high street spending in the first few months of 2018. (afp)

There are in fact many hot springs in Betulang, but the largest one is located near Batu Panes Temple in the middle of some rice fields. According to Sudana, the advantage of Belulang hot springs is that it can cure certain diseases. “So, in addition to refreshing, many travelers also come to the hot spring for treatment,” he said. On that account, the Belulang hot springs are also closely related to a series of spiritual tourism. Sudana explained that if guests wishing to recover from illnesses, before taking a bath they usually say prayers at the Batu Panes Temple. Afterwards, they take a bath in the Belulang hot springs, just 50 meters away from the temple. “Many guests are cured like those having stroke coming here for treatment,” he said. According to the temple attendant, the spring of holy water includes the Tirtha Keben, Tirtha Sudamala, Tirtha Melela, Tirtha Soka, Tirtha Megelung, Tirtha Tunggang and Tirtha Telaga Waja. Meanwhile, in the area of Pancaka tirtha garden sits the Tirtha Parisuda, Tirtha Pengelukatan, Tirtha Pengulapan, Tirtha Keris and Tirtha Kamaning. Visitors are

not allowed to bathe in the springs to prevent the water from receding and disappearing. In the middle courtyard there are some buildings such as gamelan pavilion, wooden split drum (kulkul) tower, Bale Pegambahan and Bale Pegat. According to local people, Mengening Temple was predicted to be established during the reign of King Masula-Masuli at Pejeng. He has his own story so that he got to Pejeng. MasulaMasuli was previously named I Sula and I Suli. They are male and female couple born from troktokan of ivory coconut at Besakih region. I Sula and I Suli were then invited by I Sangkul Putih.

Migrant caravan heading to U.S. border puts Mexico in tough spot with Trump

IXTEPEC - In some of the Mexican towns playing host to a “caravan” of more than 1,200 Central American migrants heading to the U.S. border, the welcome mat has been rolled out despite President Donald Trump’s call for Mexican authorities to stop them. Local officials have offered lodging in town squares and empty warehouses or arranged transport for the migrants, participants in a journey organized by the immigrant advocacy group Pueblo Sin Fronteras. The officials have conscripted buses, cars, ambulances and police trucks. But the help may not be entirely altruistic. “The authorities want us to leave their cities,” said Rodrigo Abeja, an organizer from Pueblo Sin Fronteras. “They’ve been helping us, in part to speed the massive group out of their jurisdictions.” At some point this spring, the caravan’s 2,000-mile (3,200-km) journey that began at Tapachula near the Guatemalan border on March 25 will end at the U.S. border, where some of its members will apply for asylum, while others will attempt to sneak into the United States. So far the Mexican federal government has provided little guidance on how to handle the migrants but Abeja worries that local reactions will change. “There’s a lot of pressure from authorities to stop the caravan because of Donald Trump’s reaction,” he said. Trump railed on Twitter against the caravan on Monday, accusing Mexico of “doing very little, if not NOTHING” to stop the flow of immigrants crossing the U.S. border illegally. “They must stop the big

drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA,” he concluded. Mexico’s interior minister Alfonso Navarrete did not directly address the caravan, but he wrote on Twitter that he spoke to the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Monday, and that the two had “agreed to analyze the best ways to attend to the flows of migrants in accordance with the laws of each country.” Mexico must walk a delicate line with the United States as the countries are in the midst of renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) along with Canada. At the same time, Mexican leftwing presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has an 18-point lead ahead of the July 1 election, according to a poll published on Monday. A Lopez Obrador victory could usher in a Mexican government less accommodating toward the United States on both trade and immigration issues. Mexican Senator Angelica de la Pena, who presides over the Senate’s human rights commission, told Reuters that Mexico should protect migrants’ rights despite the pressure from Trump. Former President Vicente Fox called for Mexican officials to take a stand against Trump’s attacks. Trump keeps “blackmailing, offending and denigrating Mexico and Mexicans,” he wrote on Twitter on Monday. Paddleboarder critically injured in shark attack near Hawaii beach

HAWAII - A 25-year-old man paddleboarding off a beach in Hawaii was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries Saturday after he was bumped off his board by a shark and attacked. The unidentified stand-up paddleboarder was pulled from the water by a safety team from the Kukio Golf and Beach Club on the Big Island’s popular Kona Coast near the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort. “They had heard a scream from the ocean and they took a four-man canoe out to find a male individual who had been bumped off his paddleboard about 100 to 150 yards offshore,” Fire Capt. Michael Grace told Honolulu Fox affiliate KHON-TV. The local paddleboarder was out with his father when the morning attack occurred. Team members and bystanders on shore applied tourniquets to severe injuries on his right hand and leg as they awaited paramedics, according to Grace. The victim was airlifted to

North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he underwent surgery. WTHR-TV and NTD-TV were reporting that he lost a limb. Officials had posted signs warning of sharks spotted in the water before the attack and shut down the beach on Saturday. It’s the first shark attack on the Big Island since 2015, according to state statistics, though there have been attacks off other islands of Hawaii since then. SEBASTIAN Vettel has admitted he is “a bit sad” at Formula 1’s decision to no longer use grid girls for the new season as part of a number of new changes brought in by new owners Liberty Media. The move to drop the practice of having scantily clad women standing in front of the cars before grands prix came in January after F1 decided its “does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms”.

Liberty’s other major change was delaying race start times by 10 minutes to allow some TV schedulers more time to build-up to the race, instead of starting the race on the hour as previously done. Vettel was critical in 2015 during the Monaco Grand Prix, when grid girls were replaced with male models, and admitted he is still unsure why they were dropped permanently this season. However, he did stress that it does not affect

In early March, they welcomed a new foal into their lives and the 28-year-old celebrated that with one of his best performances of the season, scoring one and assisting two goals against Freiburg. After the game, the jovial German pinpointed exactly where the performance had come from - the Mullers’ new arrival! “I was definitely geed up today,” Muller told reports in the mixed zone. “My first foal of the season was born into the world last night. I feel as though I have become a father!” Despite Jupp Heynckes heavily rotating the Bayern Munich starting XI to focus on winning another treble, Muller has played every minute since his new foal was born.
