Energetic Backstreet Boys bring the nostalgia to ACM Awards

LOS ANGELES - While Justin Timberlake had a showstopping moment alongside Chris Stapleton at the 2015 Country Music Association Awards, it was the Backstreet Boys who shined brightly at the 2017 Academy of Country Music Awards. The boy band had the night’s liveliest moment Sunday in Las Vegas: the fivesome brought the party vibe to life while singing their classic “Everybody (Backstreet Back)” along with duo Florida Georgia Line. Carrie Underwood and Nicole Kidman were just a few of the audience members at the T-Mobile Arena who felt the nostalgia, sang along and danced excitedly. In addition, this regent from Ceningan, Nusa Penida, invited the public to participate and maintain the Yellow Bridge. “I ask the community to take advantage of this bridge as well as possible and be ready to be regulated. Thus, the unfortunate ever happened will not repeat again,” he appealed. To note, the re-promotion of the Yellow Bridge really drew the attention of residents. It also included travelers that happened to make a visit to Lembongan and Ceningan. They immediately saw the beauty of the Yellow Bridge equipped with colorful decorative lights at night. The atmosphere was getting more festive when the lights were simultaneously turned on followed by a burst of fireworks. AHEAD of Galungan feast day, the market of Banyuatis and Kayuputih village, Banjar, Buleleng, has been thronged by butchers. Interestingly, the meat on sale is not only chicken or pork, but also that of buffalo. This meat will be processed into various types of delicacies used to fill in people’s offerings. As seen on Sunday morning (Apr. 2), the atmosphere of Banyuatis Market located at the intersection corner of Seririt-Bedugul was very different from the usual days ahead of Galungan. Parking space previously filled with vehicles was partly transformed into butcher stalls. A number of buyers were seen busy making a bargaining while carrying shopping bag. Some butchers were also calling market visitors and inviting them to shop. Amid such atmosphere, there was something different. Butchers did not only sell pork or chicken, but also buffalo meat. Such a view becomes unique because it is not found in the other regions. Besides, it only happens once every six months. A butcher, Ayu Inten, told that buffalo meat is mandatory for most people of Banjar when celebrating Galungan. It is processed into satay and tum (chopped meat with Balinese seasoning, wrapped in banana leaf and steamed) that will also be used to fill in the offerings in addition to consumption. “Consuming buffalo meat delicacy is a commonplace every Galungan,” she said. The slaughter of this grazing animal is not only carried out on the Penampahan Day (Anggara Wage Dungulan) or Tuesday. However, it has taken place for a couple of days earlier. Nonetheless, it does not discourage the interest of consumers to buy. “The flesh sold today (Sunday—Ed) is slaughtered at three o’clock in the morning. Then, it is directly sold to the market,” she said. (sos)

CAPE CANAVERAL - Elon Musk’s SpaceX on Thursday salvaged half of the $6 million nosecone of its rocket, in what the space entrepreneur deemed an important feat in the drive to recover more of its launch hardware and cut the cost of space flights. Shortly after the main section of SpaceX’s first recycled Falcon 9 booster landed itself on a platform in the ocean, half of the rocket’s nosecone, which protected a communications satellite during launch, splashed down via parachute nearby. “That was the cherry on the cake,” Musk, who serves as chief executive and lead designer of Space Exploration Technologies, told reporters after launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Measuring 43 feet (13 meters) long and 17 feet (5 meters) in diameter, the nosecone is big enough to hold a school bus. It separates into two pieces, exposing the satellite, about 4 minutes after liftoff. As a test, SpaceX outfitted the fairing with thrusters and a steerable parachute. “It’s its own little spacecraft,” Musk said. “The thrusters maintain its orientation as it re-enters and then ... the parachute steers it to a particular location.” SpaceX has focused most of its efforts and more than $1 billion into developing technologies to recover the Falcon 9’s main section, which accounts for about 75 percent of the $62 million rocket. Musk’s goal is to cut the cost of spaceflight so that humanity can migrate beyond Earth. “I hope people will start to think about it as a real goal to establish a civilization on Mars,” he said. LANDING ON ‘BOUNCY CASTLE’ After some debate about whether the nosecone could be recovered, Musk said he told his engineering team, “Imagine you had $6 million in cash on a pallet flying through the air that’s just going to smash into the ocean. Would you try to recover that? Yes, you would.” Musk envisions deploying a kind of “bouncy castle” for the fairing to land on so it can be recovered intact and reused. The company plans up to six more flights of recycled boosters this year, including two that will strapped alongside a third, new first-stage for the debut test flight of a heavy-lift rocket. Originally slated to fly in 2013, Falcon Heavy is now expected to fly late this summer. “At first it sounded easy. We’ll just take two first stages and use them as strap-on boosters,” Musk said. “It was actually shockingly difficult to go from single core to a triple-core vehicle.” SpaceX also may try to land the rocket’s upper-stage section, a feat the company has never attempted. “Odds of success low, but maybe worth a shot,” Musk wrote on Twitter on Friday. Privately owned SpaceX also is developing a commercial space taxi to fly astronauts to the International Space Station, a venture to send two space tourists on a trip around the moon and a Mars lander that is slated to launch in 2020. Achieving that goal will largely depend on the results of a two-year clinical trial with the Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust, which, if successful, could see Kaspar working in hospitals nationwide. TRACKS, an independent charity and specialist early years centre for children with autism in Stevenage, have seen positive results from working with Kaspar, who sports a blue cap and plaid shirt for play sessions. “We were trying to teach a little boy how to eat with his peers. He usually struggled with it because of his anxiety issues,” said deputy principal Alice Lynch. “We started doing it with Kaspar and he really, really enjoyed feeding Kaspar, making him eat when he was hungry, things like that.

Now he’s started to integrate into the classroom and eat alongside his peers. So things like that are just a massive progression.” Many children with autism find it hard to decipher basic human communication and emotion so Kaspar’s designers avoided making him too lifelike and instead opted for simplified, easy to process features. Autism support groups have been impressed. “Many autistic people are drawn to technology, particularly the predictability it provides, which means it can be a very useful means of engaging children, and adults too,” Carol Povey, director of the National Autistic Society’s Centre for Autism, told Reuters. “This robot is one of a number of emerging technologies which have the potential to make a huge difference to people on the autism spectrum.” (rtr)

Accept debt settlement by drugs

DENPASAR - A fashion designer from Russia, Goryaynova, was arrested by the members of Denpasar Police Drug Criminal Investigation Unit on Friday (Mar. 23). Goryaynova was arrested when crossing Jalan Dewi Sri, Kuta, Badung. When her bag was searched, the officers found a package of crystal meth and she was immediately taken to police station. “According to information, a drug dealer owed the offender and the remaining IDR 500,000 was then paid by using a package of crystal meth,” the source said on Sunday (Apr. 2). The source added that the arrest was made around 22:00. Disclosure of the case started from the result of investigation and testimony of witnesses that the suspect staying at the Balangan, Pratama Residence, Ungasan, South Kuta, Badung, has been taking drugs for a long time. Dengue cases decline by 50 percent

TABANAN - Dengue cases in Tabanan have decreased significantly compared to the same month last year. Based on the data of the last two months from January to February 2017, the dengue recorded in Tabanan Health Agency respectively amounted to 55 cases and 67 cases. Meanwhile, in the same month of 2016, it was respectively recorded to reach 104 cases and 166 cases. Head of the Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, said on Sunday (Apr. 2) the decline happened due to changes in the cycle or the societies in Tabanan have currently started to realize the importance of doing mosquito nests eradication (PSN) every week through activities known as simultaneous movement (Gertak) of mosquito nests eradication launched by the government of Tabanan with each subdistrict coordinator. “So, each subdistrict is coordinating its area to perform mosquito nests eradication every Friday,” he said. In addition to this movement, a number of villages have owned mosquito larva monitoring officer (Jumantik) financed by the funds of APBDes. Suratmika added that the dengue fever transmission through Aedes aegypti has very good progress during the transitional period from rainy season to hot season. Such

condition occurred in the past few months. “Judging from the cycle, the increasing cases should occur from April to September,” he said. To that end, Suratmika hoped people to regularly perform mosquito nests eradication once a week. In addition to the eradication, district government also remains to regularly carry out scheduled fogging especially in the vulnerable points to dengue transmission. This year, the government allocates the budget worth IDR 220 million for fogging at 110 points. For information, the operating cost of once fogging is IDR 2 million. In performing the mosquito nests eradication, the Division Head of the Communicable Disease Control and Environmental Sanitation (P2MPL), Tabanan Health Agency, Ketut Nariana, added that other than paying attention to water reservoirs, people should also pay attention to the garbage potentially holds water such as cans, clogged gutters and old tires in motor workshop. “Sometimes these escape from the attention so that many mosquito larvae are growing there,” he explained. While Australia has devoted billions of dollars to improve the welfare of its indigenous population, Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples at the U.N., said good intentions were being offset by poor policy. “The compounded effect of these policies has contributed to the failure to deliver on targets in the areas of health, education and employment,” Tauli-Corpuz said in Canberra, the capital, at the end of a two-week visit to Australia. Tauli-Corpuz was critical of Australia’s decision to channel aid through the office of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, describing the process as “bureaucratic, rigid and (having) wasted considerable resources on administration”. A spokesman for Australia’s Senator Nigel Scullion, the minister for indigenous affairs, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the remarks, made to reporters. Australia this year said it was falling short of almost every target to improve the lives of its indigenous population, from reducing the infant mortality rate, to getting children into school and adults in jobs. Suu Kyi’s party wins nearly half of Myanmar by-elections

YANGON - Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party won nearly half of the seats contested in by-elections on Sunday, the first vote since it swept to power a year ago and an early indication of support for her administration amid increased fighting with ethnic armed groups and slower economic growth. Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won nine out of 19 seats in the national and regional parliaments, according to the Union Election Commission, following a period in which she has struggled to match sky-high expectations. In a televised address earlier this week, Suu Kyi acknowledged the public’s frustration with the slow pace of reforms and development. But she also reiterated her top priority of ending the ethnic conflicts that have kept Myanmar in a state of near-perpetual civil war. While the outcome of the byelections will not affect the balance

of power within the parliament, where the NLD enjoys a large majority, it offers a chance to gauge the popularity of the administration in a country where nationwide public polls are not available. Win Htein, one of the NLD’s top leaders, said the party faced language barriers and problems with armed groups in the Shan state districts being contested. Fighting in some of those areas has intensified in recent months. “We are still improving in Shan state. The local people don’t understand Burmese, so we have to translate our policies into the Shan language,” he said. Major rebel armies engaged in clashes with the military in areas including the Shan state have refused to actively participate in Suu Kyi’s peace process. Several conflicts have reignited since Suu Kyi took office, displacing an estimated 160,000 more people, according to the United Nations.

Over two million voters, less than five percent of the country’s population, could vote in the byelections where seats in eight states and regions across the country were up for grabs. “We still accept the NLD government after one year. They are governing smoothly,” said Victor Hla Sein, a 73-year-old from Myanmar’s commercial hub Yangon. Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi is also facing international criticism for her government’s handling of a crisis in the Muslimmajority Rakhine region, where soldiers have blocked access for aid workers and are accused of raping and killing civilians. BUSINESS Qatar to boost production from vast underwater gas field

DOHA — Qatar said Monday it plans to boost production from a vast underwater natural gas field by 10 percent, giving the energy-rich Gulf nation potential new revenue as it pursues ambitious infrastructure plans. State-run Qatar Petroleum said a new gas project on the southern portion of the North Field would give the 2022 World Cup host capacity to export some additional 2 billion cubic feet of gas per day.

Current production from the field is around 21 billion cubic feet daily, QP President and CEO Saad Sherida alKaabi said. Qatar is a small but wealthy member of OPEC that generates most of its income from natural gas rather than crude oil. It exports the gas by chilling it to a liquefied form that can be shipped on tankers to customers around the world. It shares control of the North Field with Iran, which lies on the other side of the Persian Gulf. Al-Kaabi said the planned project follows studies and the drilling of exploratory wells that began in 2005. Work on the project is expected to begin in the coming few months. Qatar is in the midst of a massive building boom as it prepares to host soccer’s biggest tournament in five years’ time. Its finance minister told reporters in February that the country is spending nearly half a billion dollars each week preparing for the games. Iran is also looking to boost output from the shared field, which it calls South Pars. Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said late last month that his country aims to inaugurate several projects valued at $20 billion over the next year.(ap)

Palaktiying Villagers Even Celebrate Nyepi Earlier, All Prohibited to Host Guests

Residents of Palaktiying customary village, Landih, Bangli, held customary Nyepi tradition on Thursday (Mar. 16). Almost the same as Nyepi in general, in this tradition all the residents shall implement catur bratha penyepian or four abstinences, namely amati geni (no fire or light), amati karya (no activities), amati lelungan (no leaving home) and amati lelanguan (no entertainment or passion indulgence). Besides, on the Nyepi Day residents are not allowed to receive guests. If violated, the violators will be subject to sanctions. Chief of Palaktiying customary village, Wayan Ubung, said that the tradition of customary Nyepi is regularly held every year in the ninth month (March) precisely before the celebration of Nyepi. The tradition of customary Nyepi ritual is held after the implementation of ngusaba tegenan at Dalem Pingit Temple of local customary village. “It is an expression of gratitude to the Creator for all the graces given all this time,” he explained. Wayan Ubung explained that the tradition of customary Nyepi is held for a whole day from 06:00 and ends the next day at 06:00. During the customary Nyepi, residents shall implement the catur bratha penyepian. “Just like the Nyepi in general, people should not work, should not go out and should not light fire,” he explained. Other than the mandatory to undergo the four abstinences, during the customary Nyepi, all residents are also prohibited from receiving guests from outside the village. If there are any violations, residents will be penalized with customary sanction, namely a fine in the form of one kilogram of rice per one guest. “So far, there are people who violate the sanction,” he said. Further, he said that to mark the implementation of the customary Nyepi at Palaktiying hamlet, people will usually put sawen (marker) at the entrance into the house compound. The sawen is in the form of sampian that was previously used in the ngusaba tegenan. TOKYO — Encouraged by stronger export orders, Japanese manufacturers are feeling a bit more upbeat than they were late last year, according to a quarterly survey by the Bank of Japan released Monday. The central bank’s “tankan” report put sentiment among large manufacturers at 12, up from 10 in December. Mediumsized and small companies also were more optimistic. The survey’s findings fell slightly below economists’ forecasts. But they were seen as a sign that improved exports are underpinning growth in the world’s No. 3 economy as China’s economy stabilizes. Masamichi Adachi of J.P.Morgan described the results as a “B,” or “not good but not bad.” The improvement is “basically consistent with our bullish view on the current Japanese economy,” Adachi said in a research note. “Some improvement of business sentiment with persistent cautiousness is probably in line with the

BOJ’s view, as well,” he said. For the current April-June quarter, firms of all sizes forecast a slight deterioration in operating conditions, which is typical when conditions are favorable, said Marcel Thieliant of Capital Economics. “The survey suggests that growth will remain strong for now,” Thieliant said. A separate, monthly survey of purchasing managers, Nikkei Japan Manufacturing, also showed improved conditions. The latest reading of 52.4 was down slightly from March’s reading of 53.3 on a scale where 50 marks the cutoff between expansion and contraction. Japan’s exports to the rest of Asia, especially China, have recovered as Chinese factory activity has picked up amid a prolonged slowdown. But Japan’s own recovery remains vulnerable: Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has twice delayed a sales tax increase to avoid shocks to the economy. The BOJ, mean-

while, is injecting tens of billions of dollars a month into the economy through purchases of assets, mainly Japanese government bonds. The BOJ’s survey showed large manufacturers intend to increase spending on factories and equipment by only 0.6 percent in this fiscal year, which began April 1. Assange set to stay in Ecuador embassy as leftist on verge of winning election

QUITO - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange dodged an eviction order in Ecuador’s Sunday election, after the right-wing candidate who had vowed to kick him out of the country’s London embassy was set to narrowly lose a presidential election. Assange has been holed up in the tiny embassy for nearly five years, protected by Ecuador’s current leftist government from extradition to Sweden over rape allegations. Conservative presidential candidate Guillermo Lasso had vowed to roll back that welcome mat and remove Assange within 30 days of winning office, making global headlines and spooking Assange’s supporters. As it became clear Lasso was on the verge of defeat, Assange sent him a tongue-in-cheek message on Sunday night. “I cordially invite Lasso to leave Ecuador within 30 days (with or without his tax haven millions),” wrote Assange on Twitter, amid accusations that Lasso had dodged taxes by stashing cash abroad. Government candidate Lenin Moreno, meanwhile, has promised to keep hosting Assange in the Andean country’s embassy - although he warned he may take a tougher stance. Moreno said in an interview with leftist broadcaster TeleSUR in February that he would ask Assange “not to intervene in the politics of countries that are friends of Ecuador.” Assange, who enraged Washington by publishing a flood of secret U.S. diplomatic cables, entered the London embassy fearing that Sweden could end up sending him on to the United States where he could face a long prison term for leaking U.S. secrets. He has repeatedly denied the rape allegations. Though he will be able to stay on in the embassy, the tight presidential election in Ecuador highlighted just how vulnerable he is should a new government be ushered in. Lasso said Ecuador, a largely poor country struggling amid an economic downturn, was wrong to host Assange. “Ecuador had no business spending a single cent protecting someone who definitely leaked confidential information,” Lasso told Reuters in an interview in February in his sweltering coastal hometown of Guayaquil. Despite its global importance, Assange’s case barely featured in the Ecuadorean campaign, which centered on jobs and social benefits. Several rivers burst their banks near the southwestern city of Mocoa in the early hours of Saturday, sending water, mud and debris crashing down streets and into houses as people slept. Volunteers and firefighters tended to 82 bodies downstream in the town of Villagarzon and said many corpses were still caught in debris. “We had to recover them ourselves. We think we’ll find more,” Villagarzon Mayor Jhon Ever Calderon told Reuters. He said the town had no coffins or sanitary storage. Many families in Mocoa stayed up through the night to search through the debris, despite the lack of electricity in the city. “I need to know where they are, if they are injured or where to find them,” sobbed Maria Lilia Tisoy, 37, looking through

the rubble for her two daughters, one pregnant, and a 4-year-old granddaughter. “If they are dead, please God deliver them to me,” she said. President Juan Manuel Santos made a second visit to the area on Sunday. He said water and energy services would be restored as soon as possible. Santos blamed climate change for the disaster, saying Mocoa had received one-third of its usual monthly rain in just one night, causing the rivers to burst their banks. There was disagreement over the death toll for most of Sunday but, late in the evening, the government’s total was increased to match the 254-person figure released by the army. Just over 200 were injured. Disaster officials said more than 500 people were staying in emergency housing and social

services had helped 10 lost children find their parents. The disaster came after deadly flooding in Peru killed more than 100 people and destroyed infrastructure. Families of the dead will receive about $6,400 in aid and the government will cover hospital and funeral costs. Government ready to protect investors from threat of terrorism

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government is ready to protect investors and the business community from the threats of radicalism and terrorism, according to Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Commissioner General Suhardi Alius. “So far, Indonesia has been able to detect and reduce the threat of terrorism,” Alius stated during a “Breakfast Forum” of Energy and Mining Society here on Friday. Last week, eight terrorists were successfully arrested from five different locations in West Java and Banten, and one of them was shot dead, Alius noted. “It is part of the prevention and protection granted by the state to the community, including to the entrepreneurs,” Alius, the former chief of the Police Detective and

Criminal Unit, remarked. Hence, he expressed hope that entrepreneurs, including those in the mining sector, will remain calm while operating their businesses. According to Alius, the BNPT will continue to make efforts to control and reduce radicalism by means of prevention and repression as well as handling from upstream to downstream. “So far, the measures taken have been very effective. In fact, several foreign countries are keen to learn about the counterterrorism efforts taken by Indonesia,” he pointed out.

Additionally, BNPT will continue to take progressive steps to anticipate a wide range of potential terror threats, including creating synergy among 31 institutions and ministries involved in carrying out counterterrorism efforts from upstream to downstream. “We have also involved civil organizations, such as Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, as well as scholars to provide a clear insight into religion. SORONG - The Indonesian navy has exploded and sunk a Philippine fishing boat in the sea off Nana Island Sorong, West Papua. The FB Jamelia 01, however, was only one of 82 fishing boats exploded at the same time and sent to the bottom of the sea in various areas in the country on Saturday (April 1st). The sinking of the vessels, which had been found guilty of illegal fishing, was ordered and supervised by Marine and Fishery Minister Susi Pudjiastuti from Ambon, Rear Admiral SS Panjaitan, commander of the Sorong Naval Base XIV, said.Panjaitan said the FB Jamelia

Federer beats Nadal in straight sets in Miami Open final

MIAMI - Roger Federer clinched his 91st career title when he beat rival Rafa Nadal 6-3 6-4 in the Miami Open final on Sunday.

MANGUPURA - Garuda Wisnu Kencana, or GWK for short, is the name of a cultural park on Bali’s hilly southern coast famous for the ongoing construction of a gigantic statue of Vishnu riding on the back of a ‘garuda’ (a supernatural eaglelike being). The completed part of the statue is of the upper part of Vishnu’s body, the head of the ‘garuda’ and Vishnu’s hands. The cultural park has become one of the favourite places in Bali for art and cultural performances, exhibitions, and conferences. GWK, once completed at 145 metres, will be one of the world’s tallest statues and erected on the top of the hill, with a magnificent panorama of Bali. Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park is set in 250 hectares of land in Ungasan, south of Bali, and is dedicated to embrace as well as preserve the art, cultural, culinary, and spiritual aspects of the island.

The Garuda is a Hindu mythical bird, Wisnu is the Indonesian for Vishnu and kencana means a carriage. Bali’s future landmark of a 145-metre tall copper-steel-brass statue is planned to be placed here; it is of Vishnu riding on the back of his ‘garuda’ with 64-metre long wings. Nyoman Nuarta, a Balinese sculptor, started the project in 1997 and it has instantly become one of Bali’s points of interests even though it is currently only around 25% complete with the existing upper part of Vishnu body, garuda’s head, and Vishnu’s hands. Eventually, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue will be able to be seen within a radius of 20km from Kuta, Sanur, and Nusa Dua. GWK Cultural Park is about 260 metres above sea level, resulting in must-see spectacular views overlooking the island and the ocean. Facilities here include an amphitheatre, an exhibition gallery,

open-air venues, two restaurants, a souvenir shop, an art market, a massage centre, ATV and Segway rentals, as well as adventurous activities. Plaza Wisnu, on the highest level of grounds in the park, is where the statue’s upper part of Vishnu body is placed. Traditional Balinese dance is performed here, with the majestic statue as a background. By the statue is Parahyangan Somaka Giri – a sacred fount that purportedly bears magical healing powers. The water is rich in important minerals that have healing abilities. Street Theatre is the main commercial area where tours begin and end. You will find a GWK Souvenir Shop, ‘Bali Art Market’ store, and a reflexology outlet here. The story of Garuda Wisnu Kencana is related here in carvings on four limestone walls. A Barong dance is also performed at this spot every day. The largest outdoor venue in the park is Lotus Pond, contained by massive quarried limestone blocks. The 4,400sqm area can hold up to 7,500 people for dramatic big-scale events, such as music concerts, mega runway fashion shows, and much more. The garuda-head part of the statue makes a phenomenal background for events. The most beautiful vista of the island in the area is found in the Indraloka Garden. NEW YORK - New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose will miss the rest of the season after tearing the meniscus in his left knee, the team said on Sunday. The 28-year-old Rose’s latest injury setback will require arthroscopic surgery and will be his fourth surgery to either knee -- he tore his left ACL in 2012 and underwent two surgeries on his right meniscus. Rose, who is set to enter free agency this offseason, averaged 18.0 points, 4.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds over 64 games in his first season with the Knicks. The Knicks traded for Rose last June in a multiplayer deal with the Chicago Bulls. He is in the final

year of a five-year, $94 million deal. Knee injuries have plagued the three-time All-Star and 2010-11 most valuable player. While he was with the Bulls, Rose tore the ACL in his left knee during the 2012 playoffs and missed the entire following season. He then tore the meniscus in his right knee in his first season back from surgery, costing him the final 72 games in 2013-14. Rose, who has said he would like to return to New York, missed the Knicks’ previous two games with what the team described as soreness and swelling. CHAPECO — It will be anything but a typical soccer cup final when Chapecoense faces Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the Recopa Sudamericana on Tuesday. Instead, the focus will be on remembering those who died four months ago when the plane carrying Brazilian team Chapecoense crashed in the Andes on the way to the Copa Sudamericana final against Colombia’s Atletico Nacional.

in Rio de Janeiro, was hired and a municipal holiday was declared so every citizen can take part. There will be celebrations in downtown Chapeco and a fan march to the Arena Conda. Special videos will also be shown on the big screen during halftime. Afterward, fireworks will go off, and in downtown Chapeco a time capsule will be set aside to be opened in 43 years. That is the present age of the Brazilian club. As the club prepares for some closure, others in Chapeco still have a long road ahead. Goalkeeper Jackson Follmann has yet to discover his next job after losing part of a leg in the crash. Two other surviving players — winger Alan Ruschel and defender Neto — want to get back on the field, but doctors avoid making predictions about their futures.
