Brazil’s Carnival turns focus to glitzy parades Associated Press Writer
RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil is known for its exotic fauna, but the creatures on display Sunday night for the opening round of Rio’s exuberant Carnival parade were a motley crew even by local standards. Full grown adults dressed up as Nemo the fish rubbed shoulders with weightlifting wolves with enviable six-packs, while bare-breasted dancers gyrated atop floats shaped like giant crustaceans or bedecked with XXL ants. The Carnival competition sees the city’s top samba groups, or schools, parade in the Sambadrome, each delivering an over-the-top, hour-long display aimed at capturing the annual title. No excess is deemed too much, and each year the bar is raised that much higher. Sunday’s all-night-long displays saw a float shaped like a mammoth wedding cake presided over by a largerthan-life Pope Francis, a herd of elderly gentlemen in jewel-toned bull costumes complete with sequin-covered horns, and a dancing teepee surrounded by native Brazilians in green feather headdresses. and sometimes unidentifiable that it can be hard to identify the common thread. Imperio da Tijuca, the school that opened this year’s competition, was ostensibly fielding an African theme, so its huge crab-shaped float was a perplexing choice. Mangueira, one of the most famous schools known for its distinctive green and pink colors, turned to Carnival itself for a parade that feted Brazil’s traditional celebrations in a sea of salmon pink and lime green feathers. CHICAGO — Comedian Jimmy Fallon took a quick but icy dip in Lake Michigan — dressed in a full suit and tie — eyes bulging as he darted out of the slushy water and headed straight for a pile of dry towels. “The Tonight Show” host made good on his promise to make Sunday morning’s “Polar Plunge” with Mayor Rahm Emanuel as a condition for the mayor appearing on Fallon’s show in New York, following an exchange of tweets and challenges. “If you hear a scream like a little girl’s ... know that Jimmy Fallon is swimming in Lake Michigan,” Fallon told the crowd shortly before running in. Emanuel, wearing a green Chicago Public Library T-shirt and shorts, went first, with Fallon just after. Both were soaked as they fled the water to cheers from a large crowd. A group of bagpipers, wearing yellow rain boots and traditional kilts, provided the soundtrack for their rapid dash into the 32-degree Fahrenheit (0-degree Celsius) lake. The annual event draws several thousand hearty plungers to raise money for Special Olympics Chicago. Scores of people dressed in parkas and polar bear outfits, some carrying signs, gathered along the lakefront early, hoping to catch a glimpse of Fallon. SEMARAPURA - Prices of building materials increasingly soar so they make residents in the Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, distraught. To get out of this problem, local resident bring in a barge. The vessel was finally able to land safely at the traditional port of Nyuh hamlet, Nusa Penida. It is Wayan Murka who has successfully landed the vessel with the capacity of 100 to 200 trucks, Monday (Feb 24). He took advantage of the dormant traditional port at Nyuh hamlet. The building materials were transported from Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem. Despite the difficulty, the barge could finally be landed. He told the obstacles to bring in the barge was pretty much. Even, before it docked at the port of Nusa Penida, the barge was stranded on Merta Sari Beach, Sanur. At that time, he admitted to be misgivings because the sea stream was also quite strong. Moreover, the waters around the traditional port of Nyuh hamlet were quite shallow. “I had to wait for two days for the calm sea before landing at Nusa Penida. If it would be stranded again, I could suffer a big loss,” he said, Sunday (Mar 2). The idea of bringing in a barge was acknowledged to have been inspired by the problems of material procurement. All this time, the problem had been causing the construction of infrastructures in Nusa Penida subdistrict to halt. Even, they looked to have inferior quality. We’d better do as what they are doing. This condition is often complained by our members,” said Ariawan. On that account, his party would coordinate with the local government to tackle this problem because the government had the authority. He hoped the government cared about the matter. According to Ariawan, the establishment of Certification Agency was entirely the government authority. “If I were entrusted to be the Chairman of the REI of Bali Chapter in the eighth regional meeting, I will strive to prevent the unfair competition. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Age-old indicators under stress in high Bolivia

CUTUSUMA, Bolivia — For centuries, farmers in the fragile ecosystems of the high Andes have looked to the behavior of plants and animals to figure out what crops to grow and when. If reeds dried up in the late summer, rainless weather lay ahead, they believed. If the Andean fox made a howling appearance, abundant rains were thought sure to come. But increasingly erratic weather that scientists attribute to global warming is rendering their age-old methods less reliable, endangering harvests in a region where life is hard in the best of times. Experts may scoff at such folk science, but the men and women who till the high mountain soil continue to swear by the traditional indicators, and Bolivia’s government has even incorporated them into climate reports provided to farmers when it lacked modern data from meteorological stations. “They work for me,” assures Francisco Condori, 45, after checking the previous night’s precipitation on a homemade rain gauge on Lake Titicaca’s southern shore, the hills around him shining purple with flowering potato plants. Condori is a well-heeded font of ancestral knowledge for fellow farmers in these treeless climes frequently
punished by frosts, hailstorms and drought. In the reeds on Titicaca’s shore, he points out the height of the nests built by birds known as quilli quilli, a diminutive species similar to hummingbirds. Toothbrushes tell your mirror to remind you to floss. Basketball jerseys detect impending heart failure and call the ambulance for you. At least that’s the vision presented this past week at the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain. The four-day conference highlighted what the tech industry has loosely termed “the Internet of things.” Some of that wisdom is already available or promised by the end of the year. Fitness devices from Sony and Samsung connect with your smartphones to provide digital records of your daily lives. French startup Cityzen Sciences has embedded fabric with heart-rate and other sensors to track your physical activities. Internet-connected toothbrushes are coming from Procter and Gamble’s Oral-B business and from another French startup, Kolibree. The mirror part is still a prototype, but Oral-B’s
smartphone app does tell you to floss. Car makers are building in smarter navigation and other hands-free services, while IBM and AT&T are jointly equipping cities with sensors and computers for parking meters, traffic lights and water systems to all communicate. Internet-connected products represent a growth opportunity for wireless carriers, as the smartphone business slows down in developed markets because most people already have service. With the technological foundations here, the bigger challenge is getting people, businesses and municipalities to see the potential. Then there are security and privacy concerns — health insurance companies would love access to your fitness data to set premiums. At a more basic level, these systems have to figure out a way to talk the same language. You might buy your phone from Apple, your TV from Sony and your refrigerator for Samsung. It would be awful to get left out because you aren’t loyal to a single company. Plus, the smartest engineers in computing aren’t necessarily the best in clothing and construction.

It happened because Balinese workforce had a characteristic as they brought their local wisdom, both on land and cruise ships. DENPASAR - The number of HIV/ AIDS infection in Bali tends to increase each year. It does not only infect the adults, but also young children and infants. Even, due to the HIV/AIDS infection, many children have been orphan because their parents died after infected by this virus. The Citra Usadha Indonesia Foundation (YCUI) established since 1992 has provided counseling for HIV/AIDS patients in rural areas such as in Buleleng, Karangasem and Jembrana. The Foundation based in Denpasar counsels at least 500 patients with HIV/AIDS from the three regions above. In particular for Buleleng region, it is recorded that a total of 100 patients are still classified into children group of age. They turn orphan after their HIV-infected parents died. “Of the 100 children tested, ten of them are declared to be positive to HIV. They were infected by their parents,” said Chairman of the Citra Usadha Indonesia Foundation, Prof. Dr. Tuty Parwati Merati. In addition to counseling, added Tuty, her party also provided drug treatment
services, especially for patients who lived at remote villages, counseling on HIV and fund raising for the orphans. “We use the funds for various needs such as meeting the child nutrition to their school tuition,” said Tuty. One of the difficulties in preventing the HIV/AIDS infection, especially in rural areas, added Tuty, was the lack of information about the HIV. “Most rural communities are rarely touched by the information on the HIV or do not get information if the HIV has its treatment,” said Tuty. To overcome this difficulty, added Tuty, the volunteers met in person the patients with the HIV at their home. They were provided with counseling on HIV and information on where they could do the test and get the treatment. Tuty said that among the patients provided with counseling, they were consisting of housewives and children. In terms of profession, there were key population ranging from prostitutes and shemale and even some others worked as tour guide. “The patients counseled are nearly equal in number between women and men,” she said. She couldn’t speak,” she recounted. “They would have to carry her, she was like a zombie walking to and from her room.” Corby, who was convicted over 4.1 kilos (nine pounds) of marijuana stashed in her surfing gear, had to dodge a huge media scrum on her release from prison before being driven away in a black van with Channel Seven on board. “I just started crying because I just feel so used,” she said in the van with her face covered with a scarf, in footage aired by Seven. “They just use me. People judge me and say I am a really bad person but look at this. “I don’t like to judge but that’s wrong,” she said of the media throng. Seven said no payment was involved in the interview screened Sunday night. Corby was convicted and jailed for 20 years in 2005. The end of her sentence was brought forward to 2016 after she received several remissions for good behaviour, and a five-year cut following an appeal for clemency to the Indonesian president.

As a result of the condition, pedestrians and motorists or car drivers mostly used this path to distribute their agricultural products were disrupted. He hoped the government could immediately repair the road damage for the safety of residents, espe-

DENPASAR - Central government finally set the coordinates of the construction of the new airport in Buleleng as an effort to balance the development in North Bali. The Regent of Buleleng, Agus Suradnyana, stated to have received the results of the study from central government that declared the choice in the region of Kubutambahan. “The coordinate points of the airport development have been issued by central government. Since the central government does not want to spend money, we are still waiting for investors,” said Agus Suradnyana. SHENYANG, China — Japanese and North Korean Red Cross officials met in China on Monday in what Japan hopes will be a step toward talks on the return of Japanese citizens kidnapped by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s. The Red Cross meeting dealt with a different issue, the return of the remains of 21,600 Japanese who died in Korea during the chaos at the end of World War II. Japanese and North Korean Foreign Ministry officials also attended the meeting in Shenyang, a Chinese city about 210 kilometers (130 miles) from the border with North Korea, and the Japanese side hoped to feel out its North Korean counterparts on possible talks on the kidnappings and other issues. North Korea allowed five kidnapped Japanese to return home in 2002, but Japan believes at least a dozen others also were kidnapped
and wants them returned, if they are still alive. The last time the two Red Cross Societies met was in 2012. Since then, delegations of Japanese family members have visited the graves of their relatives in North Korea nine times. Some are buried on hills in the outskirts of Pyongyang, the North Korean capital. Japan colonized Korea from 1910 to 1945 and an estimated 34,600 Japanese soldiers, govern-
ment officials and family members died of hunger or disease there at the end of World War II. Of those, the remains of 13,000 have been repatriated. The 2012 Red Cross talks also led to the first government-togovernment meeting between Japan and North Korea in four years. The brief warming of relations came to an end after North Korea launched a rocket in December 2012.

PRETORIA, South Africa — Oscar Pistorius pleaded not guilty Monday to murdering his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day last year, marking the start of the Olympian’s murder trial that was being broadcast live on TV. The first witness, a neighbor of Pistorius, was called before even an hour had passed. The trial itself started 90 minutes late with Pistorius pleading not guilty to murder, two charges relating to discharge of firearm in a public place and one charge of illegal possession of ammunition. The double-amputee athlete is charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 14, 2013. Pistorius says he shot Steenkamp by accident, thinking she was an intruder inside his bathroom. Before the trial started, Pistorius walked past the victim’s mother who says she came to court so she can “really look him in the eyes.” Defense lawyer Kenny Oldwadge laid out Pistorius’ legal strategy, reading a statement from the runner in which he says the killing was an accident and that there were inconsistencies in the state’s case, as well as an attempt to introduce inadmissible character evidence to discredit him. In the statement, Pistorius said he brought two fans in from the balcony on the night of the killing, after speaking to his girlfriend who was in bed beside him. He said Steenkamp must have gone into the bathroom while he was fetching the fans. Pistorius said he did not notice that she had gone and heard the bathroom window open. “I approached the bathroom, armed with my firearm, so as to defend Reeva and I,” Pistorius said in the statement that was read by his lawyer.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — A detainee died in a stampede during a riot at a Saudi detention center for migrant workers awaiting deportation, police said Monday, adding that nine others were injured. Police spokesman Lt. Col. Ati bin Attiya al-Qarshi said in a statement that some of the foreign detainees at the al-Shemaisi center in the Red Sea city of Jiddah rioted Sunday evening and clashed with security personnel. He did not give the reasons for rioting or reveal the victims’ nationalities. Yemeni online forums and news websites reported that 10 Yemenis were killed when police opened fire on the rioters who were demanding that Saudi authorities speed up their deportation. The reports say between 6,000 to 10,000 Yemenis are detained in the prison in Jiddah. The deportations are part of a Saudi campaign to expel undocumented foreign workers after decades of lax immigration enforcement allowed migrants to take many low-wage jobs that the kingdom’s own citizens shunned. Saudi authorities, grappling with high unemployment, now want those jobs for the kingdom’s citizens. Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis seek work in oil-rich Saudi Arabia, sometimes crossing into the kingdom illegally through their country’s porous northern border. Yemen is the Arab world’s most impoverished country and is reeling from several years of turmoil and political upheaval. The Saudi migrant sweep has sparked violence before. In November, at least one Ethiopian and a Sudanese were killed in clashes between migrant workers protesting the crackdown and vigilante Saudis in the capital Riyadh. Similar clashes also broke out in Jiddah when police combed the area for migrants. Human Rights Watch has criticized the conditions of detainees awaiting deportation in the kingdom. The rights group last month said more than 12,000 Somali migrants were held under “appalling conditions” before they were deported from Saudi Arabia.

The incident could easily be the worst haze disaster in 2014,” stated Chief of Health Sub-official for Dumai City Marjoko Santoso on Monday. Marjoko explained that the quality of air in Dumai is worsening and is a cause for people to worry. Thousands of citizens in Dumai have been suffering from breathlessness and soreness of eyes and throat. The Health Sub-official has distributed thousands of masks to the people to avoid sore throat. “We will distribute 25 thousand masks across eight main streets and
sub-districts on Monday. People should wear mask if they have outdoor activities,” Marjoko reiterated. The Chief of Dumai Forestry Police, Tengku Ismet, stated that NOAA-18 satellite data has indicated at least 18 hot spots across peopleowned land as well as in the field of the ex-timber company in several sub-districts. “We have found wider hot spot zones in ex-timber company area in Sungai Sembilan Sub-district. So far, we have cooperated with the company to extinguish the fire,” Ismet stated. Floods inundate 18 thousand houses in Bandung Antara
BANDUNG - Around 18 thousand houses were inundated in Bojongsoang, Baleendah and Dayeuhkolot sub-districts, Bandung District, West Java, on Monday, following the overflow of the Citarum River. “According to the latest report from our members, the floods started entering the residential areas at around 2 a.m. today,” Dadang Wahidin, coordinator of the Bandung Youth’s Disaster Alert association, stated here, on Monday. Many residents from the three flood-affected sub-districts have evacuated themselves to higher levels such as the low-cost rented apartments and the local government offices. The floodwaters in Baleendah reached a height of up to 2.8 meters, in Dayeuhkolot around three meters and Bojongsoang about 2.2 meters, he pointed out. The floods were triggered by incessant heavy rains since Sunday evening. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) called upon the residents of Jakarta and its satellite town of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabo-
detabek) to remain alert because floods remain a threat to these areas until March. Head of BNPB’s Information Data Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho recently pointed out that residents living in areas prone to floods need to remain alert. “Jabodetabek is facing flood threat until March because it is still the rainy season,” he explained. He added that rainfalls in Java were lesser in February than in January but they increase during March, and people should keep a watch for floods and landslides. “People must be prepared with equipment that can be used in an emergency situation. One should remain cautious when traveling on the streets,” he added. He elaborated that based on his agency’s monitoring so far, the death of victims during the recent floods in Jakarta was due to the fact that some were electrocuted and some others slipped in and fell into the sewage. The January deficit of $431 million compared to a $1.5 billion surplus in December, the official Statistics Agency said. “The 5.75 percent drop in exports is due to the annual pattern and the coming into effect of the mineral law,” said Adi Lumaksono, a senior official at the agency. Indonesia imposed a ban on exports of mineral ore including bauxite, nickel and copper beginning January 12. The move is one of a series of industrial policies pushed by nationalist politicians who argue foreign firms reap an inordinate share of the profits from exploiting resources and business opportunities in the fast-growing economy. The mineral export ban contributed in December to Indonesia’s biggest trade surplus in two years as mining firms ramped up exports to key markets like China ahead of the impending ban. The January deficit is Indonesia’s first monthly shortfall since
September. However, inflation eased in February, the agency said Monday, the latest sign the economy was stabilising after a rough 2013. Inflation came in at 7.75 percent, lower than analyst estimates, and compared to 8.22 percent in January. Indonesia was hit hard last year by expectations the US Federal Reserve
would start to wind down its economic stimulus programme, which analysts said could cause investment capital to exit emerging markets. Meanwhile, HSBC’s manufacturing purchasing managers index -- a gauge of future manufacturing activity -- expanded for the sixth straight month in February albeit at a slower rate than in the previous month, the bank said.

LONDON — An exquisite equalizer from Yaya Toure sparked a second-half comeback by Manchester City in the League Cup final on Sunday, with a 3-1 victory over Sunderland giving Manuel Pellegrini his first trophy as manager. Returning to the stadium where Roberto Mancini’s City career ended in an FA Cup final loss last May, further Wembley misery appeared to be beckoning when Fabio Borini put Premier League struggler Sunderland in front after 10 minutes. Instead, City, which has now scored 121 goals this season, remains on course for an improbable quadruple that would require all the resolve displayed in the second half to complete. After a flat firsthalf performance, the recovery began after Toure nonchalantly curled into the net from 30 yards (meters) in the 55th minute, with Samir Nasri volleying home City’s second inside two minutes. City fans were already celebrating just their third trophy in three years — following a 35-year title drought — when Jesus Navas completed a counterattack to add the
third in the 90th minute. “To win the first trophy I think is important for us all ... because at an important club you must win trophies,” said Pellegrini, the Chilean who spent a decade in charge of Spanish clubs without a winners’ medal. “In the second half we changed it and scored two beautiful goals and we had the patience to win.” City is in the Premier League title hunt and has reached the FA Cup quarterfinals, but must overturn a 2-0 deficit against Barcelona to advance in the Champions League from the round-of-16 stage. “I hope it will bring confidence for

BELGRADE - Serbian soccer fans are fed up with the national team’s excuses for underperforming and it is imperative that the Balkan country qualify for the Euro 2016 tournament, midfielder Nemanja Matic has said. The Serbians failed to reach either Euro 2012 or this year’s World Cup and Matic, who rejoined Chelsea in January after the Premier League side had sold him to Benfica in 2011, believes they must emerge from a tough qualifying group if they want to regain the respect of fans back home. “We have to reach the finals in France as people in Serbia have had enough of our excuses that we are a quality side always very nearly there but never quite up to the task,” the 25-year-old told daily Vecernje Novosti ahead of Serbia’s friendly against Ireland in Dublin on Wednesday.

LONDON — An exquisite equalizer from Yaya Toure sparked a second-half comeback by Manchester City in the League Cup final on Sunday, with a 3-1 victory over Sunderland giving Manuel Pellegrini his first trophy as manager. Returning to the stadium where Roberto Mancini’s City career ended in an FA Cup final loss last May, further Wembley misery appeared to be beckoning when Fabio Borini put Premier League struggler Sunderland in front after 10 minutes. Instead, City, which has now scored 121 goals this season, remains on course for an improbable quadruple that would require all the resolve displayed in the second half to complete. After a flat firsthalf performance, the recovery began after Toure nonchalantly curled into the net from 30 yards (meters) in the 55th minute, with Samir Nasri volleying home City’s second inside two minutes. City fans were already celebrating just their third trophy in three years — following a 35-year title drought — when Jesus Navas completed a counterattack to add the
third in the 90th minute. “To win the first trophy I think is important for us all ... because at an important club you must win trophies,” said Pellegrini, the Chilean who spent a decade in charge of Spanish clubs without a winners’ medal. “In the second half we changed it and scored two beautiful goals and we had the patience to win.” City is in the Premier League title hunt and has reached the FA Cup quarterfinals, but must overturn a 2-0 deficit against Barcelona to advance in the Champions League from the round-of-16 stage. “I hope it will bring confidence for
us to win the other trophies,” Nasri said. After more than $1.5 billion of Abu Dhabi investment in less than six years, City has now won each of the domestic trophies in three years, following the 2011 FA Cup and 2012 Premier League title produced by Mancini. But, in a showpiece game seen live in around 180 countries, City was unpicked after just 10 minutes by a team fighting relegation when slack defending allowed Sunderland to pounce. Fernandinho was dispossessed next to the Sunderland penalty area, allowing Seb Larsson to
launch a counterattack before passing to Adam Johnson on the right wing. Johnson then sent the ball high down the flank to Borini, who easily slipped beyond captain Vincent Kompany before scoring low past Costel Pantilimon. In response, there was little threat from a team which is six points off the top of the standings but with two games in hand. Sergio Aguero, back after five games out with a hamstring injury, launched himself down the right flank midway through the first half. But after crossing to Nasri, the France midfielder’s sight of goal was partially obscured by Lee Cattermole and it was a trouble-free save for Vito Mannone. Making amends for his earlier slackness, a well-timed tackle by Kompany cut out Borini’s run on goal — denying Sunderland a chance to double its lead before halftime. “Our first half, there was memo-

The curling shot from Toure looped over Mannone into the corner of the net, giving the defensive midfielder a 17th goal of the season. And before Sunderland could regroup there was an equally fine finish from Nasri. From Pantilimon’s quick goal kick, Aguero sent the ball to Aleksandar Kolarov, who crossed for Nasri to net with a first-time volley. “They’ve scored a great goal to get back into it, he’s stuck it in the top corner from 30 yards out and then we’ve lost a bit of organization and it’s cost us a second goal,” Sunderland captain John O’Shea said.

BELGRADE - Serbian soccer fans are fed up with the national team’s excuses for underperforming and it is imperative that the Balkan country qualify for the Euro 2016 tournament, midfielder Nemanja Matic has said. The Serbians failed to reach either Euro 2012 or this year’s World Cup and Matic, who rejoined Chelsea in January after the Premier League side had sold him to Benfica in 2011, believes they must emerge from a tough qualifying group if they want to regain the respect of fans back home. “We have to reach the finals in France as people in Serbia have had enough of our excuses that we are a quality side always very nearly there but never quite up to the task,” the 25-year-old told daily Vecernje Novosti ahead of Serbia’s friendly against Ireland in Dublin on Wednesday.
Serbia have been drawn to face Portugal, Denmark, Armenia and Albania in Group I, opening with an away fixture against the Armenians on Oct. 11. Striding toward its third consecutive title, the victory moved Juventus 11 points ahead of second-place Roma. “Only a tank could stop Juventus,” new Milan coach Clarence Seedorf said. “They showed their strength and Tevez provided the difference. He’s a great player.” Milan, which was starting to gain momentum under Seedorf, dropped to 10th, six points adrift of the European places. Hamilton on top on final day of F1 testing
Formula One teams wrapped up pre-season testing in Bahrain on Sunday with Lewis Hamilton on top of the timesheets and his Mercedes team looking clear favourites for the opener in Australia on March 16. The 2008 world champion completed 70 laps of the Sakhir circuit and ended the final day with a time just 0.02 off the best lap of the week set by Brazilian Felipe Massa for Williams on Saturday. “This has definitely been the most challenging winter I’ve experienced and the car is still very much a work in progress,” said Hamilton, whose team did more laps than any other over the 12 days of testing in Spain and Bahrain. “But we’ve learnt a lot over the course of these last few weeks and overall it’s been a good winter of testing for us.” Formula One has undergone the biggest technical revolution in more than 20 years, with the introduction of a new turbocharged V6 engine and energy recovery systems. “There’s so much to learn with these new cars; it’s just mindblowing and I don’t think anybody can be fully ready for the challenge of this season,” said Hamilton. “But I feel as ready as I can be and I’m looking forward to seeing where we

SHENYANG, China — Japanese and North Korean Red Cross officials met in China on Monday in what Japan hopes will be a step toward talks on the return of Japanese citizens kidnapped by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s. The Red Cross meeting dealt with a different issue, the return of the remains of 21,600 Japanese who died in Korea during the chaos at the end of World War II. Japanese and North Korean Foreign Ministry officials also attended the meeting in Shenyang, a Chinese city about 210 kilometers (130 miles) from the border with North Korea, and the Japanese side hoped to feel out its North Korean counterparts on possible talks on the kidnappings and other issues. North Korea allowed five kidnapped Japanese to return home in 2002, but Japan believes at least a dozen others also were kidnapped
and wants them returned, if they are still alive. The last time the two Red Cross Societies met was in 2012. Since then, delegations of Japanese family members have visited the graves of their relatives in North Korea nine times. Some are buried on hills in the outskirts of Pyongyang, the North Korean capital. Japan colonized Korea from 1910 to 1945 and an estimated 34,600 Japanese soldiers, govern-
ment officials and family members died of hunger or disease there at the end of World War II. Of those, the remains of 13,000 have been repatriated. The 2012 Red Cross talks also led to the first government-togovernment meeting between Japan and North Korea in four years. The brief warming of relations came to an end after North Korea launched a rocket in December 2012.

PRETORIA, South Africa — Oscar Pistorius pleaded not guilty Monday to murdering his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day last year, marking the start of the Olympian’s murder trial that was being broadcast live on TV. The first witness, a neighbor of Pistorius, was called before even an hour had passed. The trial itself started 90 minutes late with Pistorius pleading not guilty to murder, two charges relating to discharge of firearm in a public place and one charge of illegal possession of ammunition. The double-amputee athlete is charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 14, 2013. Pistorius says he shot Steenkamp by accident, thinking she was an intruder inside his bathroom. Before the trial started, Pistorius walked past the victim’s mother who says she came to court so she can “really look him in the eyes.” Defense lawyer Kenny Oldwadge laid out Pistorius’ legal strategy, reading a statement from the runner in which he says the killing was an accident and that there were inconsistencies in the state’s case, as well as an attempt to introduce inadmissible character evidence to discredit him. In the statement, Pistorius said he brought two fans in from the balcony on the night of the killing, after speaking to his girlfriend who was in bed beside him. He said Steenkamp must have gone into the bathroom while he was fetching the fans. Pistorius said he did not notice that she had gone and heard the bathroom window open. “I approached the bathroom, armed with my firearm, so as to defend Reeva and I,” Pistorius said in the statement that was read by his lawyer.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — A detainee died in a stampede during a riot at a Saudi detention center for migrant workers awaiting deportation, police said Monday, adding that nine others were injured. Police spokesman Lt. Col. Ati bin Attiya al-Qarshi said in a statement that some of the foreign detainees at the al-Shemaisi center in the Red Sea city of Jiddah rioted Sunday evening and clashed with security personnel. He did not give the reasons for rioting or reveal the victims’ nationalities. Yemeni online forums and news websites reported that 10 Yemenis were killed when police opened fire on the rioters who were demanding that Saudi authorities speed up their deportation. The reports say between 6,000 to 10,000 Yemenis are detained in the prison in Jiddah. The deportations are part of a Saudi campaign to expel undocumented foreign workers after decades of lax immigration enforcement allowed migrants to take many low-wage jobs that the kingdom’s own citizens shunned. Saudi authorities, grappling with high unemployment, now want those jobs for the kingdom’s citizens. Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis seek work in oil-rich Saudi Arabia, sometimes crossing into the kingdom illegally through their country’s porous northern border. Yemen is the Arab world’s most impoverished country and is reeling from several years of turmoil and political upheaval. The Saudi migrant sweep has sparked violence before. In November, at least one Ethiopian and a Sudanese were killed in clashes between migrant workers protesting the crackdown and vigilante Saudis in the capital Riyadh. Similar clashes also broke out in Jiddah when police combed the area for migrants. Human Rights Watch has criticized the conditions of detainees awaiting deportation in the kingdom. The rights group last month said more than 12,000 Somali migrants were held under “appalling conditions” before they were deported from Saudi Arabia.

DUMAI - Thick haze from land fires has covered Dumai City of Riau Province on Monday morning, decreasing visibility range to 50 meters. “The quality of air on Monday morning was at a very dangerous level for people and the environment, with the Air Pollution Standard Index reaching above 700 PSI. The incident could easily be the worst haze disaster in 2014,” stated Chief of Health Sub-official for Dumai City Marjoko Santoso on Monday. Marjoko explained that the quality of air in Dumai is worsening and is a cause for people to worry. Thousands of citizens in Dumai have been suffering from breathlessness and soreness of eyes and throat. The Health Sub-official has distributed thousands of masks to the people to avoid sore throat. “We will distribute 25 thousand masks across eight main streets and
sub-districts on Monday. People should wear mask if they have outdoor activities,” Marjoko reiterated. The Chief of Dumai Forestry Police, Tengku Ismet, stated that NOAA-18 satellite data has indicated at least 18 hot spots across peopleowned land as well as in the field of the ex-timber company in several sub-districts. “We have found wider hot spot zones in ex-timber company area in Sungai Sembilan Sub-district. So far, we have cooperated with the company to extinguish the fire,” Ismet stated. According to him, the haze in Dumai is not only from the surrounding area, but also from neighboring districts that have severe forest and land fires.
Floods inundate 18 thousand houses in Bandung Antara
BANDUNG - Around 18 thousand houses were inundated in Bojongsoang, Baleendah and Dayeuhkolot sub-districts, Bandung District, West Java, on Monday, following the overflow of the Citarum River. “According to the latest report from our members, the floods started entering the residential areas at around 2 a.m. today,” Dadang Wahidin, coordinator of the Bandung Youth’s Disaster Alert association, stated here, on Monday. Many residents from the three flood-affected sub-districts have evacuated themselves to higher levels such as the low-cost rented apartments and the local government offices. The floodwaters in Baleendah reached a height of up to 2.8 meters, in Dayeuhkolot around three meters and Bojongsoang about 2.2 meters, he pointed out. The floods were triggered by incessant heavy rains since Sunday evening. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) called upon the residents of Jakarta and its satellite town of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabo-
detabek) to remain alert because floods remain a threat to these areas until March. Head of BNPB’s Information Data Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho recently pointed out that residents living in areas prone to floods need to remain alert. “Jabodetabek is facing flood threat until March because it is still the rainy season,” he explained. He added that rainfalls in Java were lesser in February than in January but they increase during March, and people should keep a watch for floods and landslides. “People must be prepared with equipment that can be used in an emergency situation. One should remain cautious when traveling on the streets,” he added. He elaborated that based on his agency’s monitoring so far, the death of victims during the recent floods in Jakarta was due to the fact that some were electrocuted and some others slipped in and fell into the sewage. The death toll due to floods in Jakarta until January 26 reached 23 people, according to the data of Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

The January deficit of $431 million compared to a $1.5 billion surplus in December, the official Statistics Agency said. “The 5.75 percent drop in exports is due to the annual pattern and the coming into effect of the mineral law,” said Adi Lumaksono, a senior official at the agency. Indonesia imposed a ban on exports of mineral ore including bauxite, nickel and copper beginning January 12. The move is one of a series of industrial policies pushed by nationalist politicians who argue foreign firms reap an inordinate share of the profits from exploiting resources and business opportunities in the fast-growing economy. The mineral export ban contributed in December to Indonesia’s biggest trade surplus in two years as mining firms ramped up exports to key markets like China ahead of the impending ban. The January deficit is Indonesia’s first monthly shortfall since
September. However, inflation eased in February, the agency said Monday, the latest sign the economy was stabilising after a rough 2013. DENPASAR - Central government finally set the coordinates of the construction of the new airport in Buleleng as an effort to balance the development in North Bali. The Regent of Buleleng, Agus Suradnyana, stated to have received the results of the study from central government that declared the choice in the region of Kubutambahan. “The coordinate points of the airport development have been issued by central government. Since the central government does not want to spend money, we are still waiting for investors,” said Agus Suradnyana. He argued the new airport construction should be realized with zero cost by developing the land in the vicinity of the airport without marginalizing local communities. “The concept is by empowering the surrounding communities. As a result of the condition, pedestrians and motorists or car drivers mostly used this path to distribute their agricultural products were disrupted. He hoped the government could immediately repair the road damage for the safety of residents, espe-

CUTUSUMA, Bolivia — For centuries, farmers in the fragile ecosystems of the high Andes have looked to the behavior of plants and animals to figure out what crops to grow and when. If reeds dried up in the late summer, rainless weather lay ahead, they believed. If the Andean fox made a howling appearance, abundant rains were thought sure to come. But increasingly erratic weather that scientists attribute to global warming is rendering their age-old methods less reliable, endangering harvests in a region where life is hard in the best of times. Experts may scoff at such folk science, but the men and women who till the high mountain soil continue to swear by the traditional indicators, and Bolivia’s government has even incorporated them into climate reports provided to farmers when it lacked modern data from meteorological stations. “They work for me,” assures Francisco Condori, 45, after checking the previous night’s precipitation on a homemade rain gauge on Lake Titicaca’s southern shore, the hills around him shining purple with flowering potato plants. Condori is a well-heeded font of ancestral knowledge for fellow farmers in these treeless climes frequently
punished by frosts, hailstorms and drought. In the reeds on Titicaca’s shore, he points out the height of the nests built by birds known as quilli quilli, a diminutive species similar to hummingbirds. Farmers have long used the locations of those nests as measures of how much the lake will rise and the amount of rainfall to come. “This year they initially built their nests about 40 centimeters (1.3 feet) above the water level. Then they dismantled them,” Condori says. Twice, in fact, did the birds dismantle nests before finally reweaving them at nearly twice their original height. “We knew it was going to rain a lot,” he says. And so it did, so much so that rivers in the Amazon basin have flooded their banks, submerging thousands of homes. That rain augured well, by contrast, for this Aymara community’s potato crop.

Toothbrushes tell your mirror to remind you to floss. Basketball jerseys detect impending heart failure and call the ambulance for you. At least that’s the vision presented this past week at the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain. The four-day conference highlighted what the tech industry has loosely termed “the Internet of things.” Some of that wisdom is already available or promised by the end of the year. Fitness devices from Sony and Samsung connect with your smartphones to provide digital records of your daily lives. French startup Cityzen Sciences has embedded fabric with heart-rate and other sensors to track your physical activities. Internet-connected toothbrushes are coming from Procter and Gamble’s Oral-B business and from another French startup, Kolibree. The mirror part is still a prototype, but Oral-B’s
smartphone app does tell you to floss. Car makers are building in smarter navigation and other hands-free services, while IBM and AT&T are jointly equipping cities with sensors and computers for parking meters, traffic lights and water systems to all communicate. Internet-connected products represent a growth opportunity for wireless carriers, as the smartphone business slows down in developed markets because most people already have service. With the technological foundations here, the bigger challenge is getting people, businesses and municipalities to see the potential. Then there are security and privacy concerns — health insurance companies would love access to your fitness data to set premiums. At a more basic level, these systems have to figure out a way to talk the same language. You might buy your phone from Apple, your TV from Sony and your refrigerator for Samsung. DENPASAR - The number of HIV/ AIDS infection in Bali tends to increase each year. It does not only infect the adults, but also young children and infants. Even, due to the HIV/AIDS infection, many children have been orphan because their parents died after infected by this virus. The Citra Usadha Indonesia Foundation (YCUI) established since 1992 has provided counseling for HIV/AIDS patients in rural areas such as in Buleleng, Karangasem and Jembrana. The Foundation based in Denpasar counsels at least 500 patients with HIV/AIDS from the three regions above. In particular for Buleleng region, it is recorded that a total of 100 patients are still classified into children group of age. They turn orphan after their HIV-infected parents died. “Of the 100 children tested, ten of them are declared to be positive to HIV. They were infected by their parents,” said Chairman of the Citra Usadha Indonesia Foundation, Prof. Dr. Tuty Parwati Merati. In addition to counseling, added Tuty, her party also provided drug treatment
services, especially for patients who lived at remote villages, counseling on HIV and fund raising for the orphans. “We use the funds for various needs such as meeting the child nutrition to their school tuition,” said Tuty. One of the difficulties in preventing the HIV/AIDS infection, especially in rural areas, added Tuty, was the lack of information about the HIV. “Most rural communities are rarely touched by the information on the HIV or do not get information if the HIV has its treatment,” said Tuty. To overcome this difficulty, added Tuty, the volunteers met in person the patients with the HIV at their home. They were provided with counseling on HIV and information on where they could do the test and get the treatment. Tuty said that among the patients provided with counseling, they were consisting of housewives and children. In terms of profession, there were key population ranging from prostitutes and shemale and even some others worked as tour guide. “The patients counseled are nearly equal in number between women and men,” she said. SEMARAPURA - Prices of building materials increasingly soar so they make residents in the Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, distraught. To get out of this problem, local resident bring in a barge. The vessel was finally able to land safely at the traditional port of Nyuh hamlet, Nusa Penida. It is Wayan Murka who has successfully landed the vessel with the capacity of 100 to 200 trucks, Monday (Feb 24). He took advantage of the dormant traditional port at Nyuh hamlet. The building materials were transported from Kubu subdistrict, Karangasem. Despite the difficulty, the barge could finally be landed. He told the obstacles to bring in the barge was pretty much. Even, before it docked at the port of Nusa Penida, the barge was stranded on Merta Sari Beach, Sanur. At that time, he admitted to be misgivings because the sea stream was also quite strong. Moreover, the waters around the traditional port of Nyuh hamlet were quite shallow. “I had to wait for two days for the calm sea before landing at Nusa Penida. If it would be stranded again, I could suffer a big loss,” he said, Sunday (Mar 2). The idea of bringing in a barge was acknowledged to have been inspired by the problems of material procurement. All this time, the problem had been causing the construction of infrastructures in Nusa Penida subdistrict to halt. Even, they looked to have inferior quality. We’d better do as what they are doing. This condition is often complained by our members,” said Ariawan. On that account, his party would coordinate with the local government to tackle this problem because the government had the authority. He hoped the government cared about the matter. According to Ariawan, the establishment of Certification Agency was entirely the government authority. “If I were entrusted to be the Chairman of the REI of Bali Chapter in the eighth regional meeting, I will strive to prevent the unfair competition. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil is known for its exotic fauna, but the creatures on display Sunday night for the opening round of Rio’s exuberant Carnival parade were a motley crew even by local standards. Full grown adults dressed up as Nemo the fish rubbed shoulders with weightlifting wolves with enviable six-packs, while bare-breasted dancers gyrated atop floats shaped like giant crustaceans or bedecked with XXL ants. The Carnival competition sees the city’s top samba groups, or schools, parade in the Sambadrome, each delivering an over-the-top, hour-long display aimed at capturing the annual title. No excess is deemed too much, and each year the bar is raised that much higher. Sunday’s all-night-long displays saw a float shaped like a mammoth wedding cake presided over by a largerthan-life Pope Francis, a herd of elderly gentlemen in jewel-toned bull costumes complete with sequin-covered horns, and a dancing teepee surrounded by native Brazilians in green feather headdresses. and sometimes unidentifiable that it can be hard to identify the common thread. CHICAGO — Comedian Jimmy Fallon took a quick but icy dip in Lake Michigan — dressed in a full suit and tie — eyes bulging as he darted out of the slushy water and headed straight for a pile of dry towels. “The Tonight Show” host made good on his promise to make Sunday morning’s “Polar Plunge” with Mayor Rahm Emanuel as a condition for the mayor appearing on Fallon’s show in New York, following an exchange of tweets and challenges. “If you hear a scream like a little girl’s ... know that Jimmy Fallon is swimming in Lake Michigan,” Fallon told the crowd shortly before running in. Emanuel, wearing a green Chicago Public Library T-shirt and shorts, went first, with Fallon just after. Both were soaked as they fled the water to cheers from a large crowd. A group of bagpipers, wearing yellow rain boots and traditional kilts, provided the soundtrack for their rapid dash into the 32-degree Fahrenheit (0-degree Celsius) lake.
