Silvano Vinceti, chairman of the Italian national committee for cultural heritage, said the Florence-born Renaissance artist’s male apprentice and possible lover Salai was the main inspiration for

the picture. However his claim was immediately disputed by experts at the Louvre in Paris, where the painting is on display. Salai, real name Gian Giacomo Caprotti, an effeminate young artist who worked with da Vinci for 25 years, is thought to have served as a model and muse for several of his paintings. Hit by tornado, dozens of houses damaged Bangli (Bali Post)—

Violent blows of tornado on Tuesday (Feb 1) around at 2:30 p.m. Local Time crashed the Demulih Village, Susut Subdistrict, Bangli Regency. Dozens of houses owned by local residents were damaged. Two chicken runs owned by local residents were even flat to the ground as hit by the tornado. Losses in the incident were estimated to reach IDR 250 million. One of the Demulih residents, Wayan Sumarjaya, witnessed the incident starting from heavy rain falls. Suddenly the wind blew in circles. Afterward, it grabbed and knocked down his albasia tree. The tree then impinged a coconut tree over his building. Both trees were uprooted and fell on his house (western pavilion). As consequence, the newly completed building was destroyed. Luckily his family was not inside the pavilion then. The loss caused by the incident was estimated to reach

IDR 90 million. Similar confession was revealed by Wayan Nyambang, the neighbor of Sumarjaya whose house was also afflicted by the same incident. The Indonesia Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) of Bali Chapter urged the Province of Bali, especially the regency/municipal government, to immediately close the operation of illegal accommodation such as villas, bungalows and cottage. Secretary of the PHRI Bali, Ferry Markus, assessed the rampant existence of villas, bungalows and tourist cottages operating illegally caused the low occupancy rate of hotels in Bali. Even, they were vulnerable to the acts of criminality happened lately. “The increasing number of illegal villas, bungalows and cottages has also damaged the image of Bali tourism. It can happen considering those illegal tourism accommodations tend to provide poor services due to low prices,” revealed Ferry Markus on Tuesday (Feb 1). Governments and stakeholders, expected Ferry, dared to take a firm stance by closing the operation of those illegal tourist facilities, even if required, the authority should demolish those illegal villas, bun-

galows or cottages. “Now, it is depending on the government because it has the authority whether it will discipline them or even demolish them properly,” he said. Meanwhile, a member of the Badung House, Nyoman Karyana, stated that his party slightly doubted the relevant agencies in overseeing those illegal accommodations, especially the villas. “It has been proven by the existence of rampant illegal villas. In other words, so far the institutions can be said to have enforced the regulation less intensively,” he said. In the meantime, the Head of South Kuta Subdistrict, Wayan Wijana, admitted to have been working as closely as possible to follow up the matter. Foodstuff triggers inflation by 2.93 percent Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Inflation of Denpasar City was recorded to reach 2.93 percent in January 2011. Such a figure was triggered by contribution of food group by 2.93 percent. Of the 66 cities listed, 62 cities went through inflation. The highest inflation was undergone by Padang namely by 3.70 percent and the lowest occurred in Manokwari by 0.07 percent. Meanwhile, the highest deflation occurred in Sorong by 1.07 percent and the lowest in Ternate by 0.32 percent. “Inflation happening currently in Denpasar surpassed the national rate reaching 0.89 percent. But, when ranked from the highest inflation, Denpasar ranked 28th out of 62 cities undergoing the inflation,” said the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali Office, Gede Suarsa, Tuesday (Feb 1). Aside from affected by the foodstuff group, the inflation was also caused by the price hikes as shown by the rising index of goods and services group. Further, Suarsa revealed the rate of inflation consisting of prepared food by 0.29 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel (0.22 percent); clothing (0.08 percent), health group (0.15 percent); and the transport, communications, and financial services (1.26 percent).

“Apart from a few commodities giving contribution to inflation, some other commodities also caused deflation. Dominant commodities causing deflation are education, recreation, and sport by 0.18 percent,” he said. Meanwhile, the development of standard dry grain price (GKP) in Bali from the past five years showed a fluctuating trend. In September 2010, the standard price at the farmer level was only at IDR 3,193.12 per kg. The condition continued to show improvement in October of the same year at the farmer level, namely IDR 3,106.37 per kg, while in November the sales price slightly dropped to IDR 3,032.27 per kg. However, in December 2010 until January 2011 the standard price at the level of farmer increased to IDR 3,092.40 per kg and IDR 3,309.92 per kg. “During last January, there were no farmers in Bali selling the grain with moisture content above 25 percent, though the rainfall condition occurred was quite extreme,” he said. The lowest price of grain meeting the GKP quality standard at the level of farmer in January 2011 was IDR 3,350 per kg, while the highest price at IDR 3,410 per kg was found in the Buleleng Regency. Falling From Third Floor

High School Project Constructor Died Nyoman Berag (60) from Banjar Besang Kangin, Semarapura Kaja, Klungkung who works as a constructor in Saraswati High School building construction project located at Cokroaminoto street, Klungkung, fell from the third floor of the building last Tuesday (1/2) afternoon resulting a fatal incident. It is not known what have caused it yet it is strongly suspected caused by being tripped by an iron bar. Information received from the field stated that victim fell at 4 pm. The incident was totally unknown by other constructors as at that time the seven constructors who were working on classrooms are having their break. “It was during our break. We knew it happened after we heard a thud and then informed by a security,” one of the constructors Nengah Sumerta stated, who’s also victim’s family. Sumerta stated victim was

found alive and hurt. He was then brought to Emergency of Klungkung Hospital to get treatment yet it can’t be helped anymore. Victim was thought to have broke his head and his right ear was bleeding, “There might be fatality on the head so victim can’t be saved.” Besides that Sumerta thinks the victim was trying to find iron bars, “We did not know exactly what happened as at that time we’re all on our break.” Meanwhile, victim’s body has been wrapped in cloth and was put on a bale at the west part of his house. A number of victim’s family has been visiting and it is planned that he will be buried in two days after his family in Singaraja will come. “Victim comes has five siblings so we’re waiting for them first,” victim’s colleague, Ketut Surena, stated. Seaweed Harvest Decreased Semarapura (Bali Post)

Seaweed was said to be the main part of the Nusa Penida people economy as the harvesting results from it has been great and stabil priced too. Yet this harvest season has a different story as production has decreased 30 percent causing loss. “Rainy season causes seaweed to rot. Ice-ice (seaweed pests) are also growing,” a seaweed farmer in Banjar Sental Kawan, Ped, Nusa Penida, Made Suweja (65), when met at his seaweed saving place last Tuesday (1/2). Not only Suweja who’s victimized but also other seaweed farmers on the beach shores of Nusa Penida. Suweja this day maximal harvest reaches 120 kilogram per three hundred square meters. The profession he has been doing since 1984 usually can harvest 700 kg. Suweja usually handles the farming by himself on the sea, yet when it’s harvest time and it’s on land his wife would help out. He sells his products in a distributor at Nusa Penida with price IDR 2.500 per kilogram for white seaweeds and Rp 3.400 per kilogram for red seaweeds. Following the rainy season, ice-ice pestes become more threatening and breaks seaweed stems. Ngusaba Guling, togetherness of Timbrah customary villagers Residents of Timbrah Customary Village, Karangasem, organized Ngusaba Dalem ritual on Tuesday (Feb 1). At that time, nearly every local household offered at least a single roasted suckling pig (babi guling). It is also better known as Ngusaba Guling. The annual Ngusaba ritual held in the eighth month based on Balinese calendar (falling around January-February) is a unique tradition. There are so many roasted pigs put into offering. Other than this uniqueness, the Ngusaba also indicates the togetherness of the local villagers. Adviser to the Timbrah Customary Village, I Nengah Sudarsa, who is also the Secretary of Karangasem Regency Government, stated that pursuant to the philosophy or regulation of customary village there was no obligation to offer a roasted pig for each household. However, it highly depended on the sincerity and ability of each customary villager. But, due to their togetherness, each household presented a roasted pig together with its complementary oblation. Sudarsa, who was a former chief of the customary village, added that the ceremony reflected the togetherness of villagers. If there were poor villagers or they were unable to offer roasted pig,

then ‘the haves’ would deliver their roasted pig after being offered. On that account, people who were unable to roast pig could even have a larger amount of meat because so many villagers gave them. As a matter of fact, said Sudarsa, the core purpose of Ngusaba Dalem ritual was to worship the Goddess Durgha (consort of Lord Shiva) to invoke welfare and safety for the Timbrah villagers in particular. “Offering the roasted pig poses an expression of gratitude of local villagers for the grace bestowed in the form of crops and livestock by the gods worshiped at the Dalem Temple of Timbrah Customary Village,” said Sudarsa. He added that since not all residents were able to offer a roasted pig they could optionally offer roasted duck accompanied by complementary offerings like Canang Bayuan depending on their sincerity and capability. Sudarsa said the total household at his village was 789. Re-

lated to the successful harvest in the rice fields and estates and the non-existence of disease outbreak affecting the livestock in the village territory, it could be assured that all households would offer at least one roasted pig. It meant there were no less than 800 crispy roasted pigs of various sizes would be offered in the temple. The tradition of offering roasted pig together with complementary offerings was not only performed at the Ngusaba Dalem ritual. In the Ngusaba Sumbu falling around July, local villagers were also able to present the same offerings. Except for both unique traditions, the regulation of customary village also set forth the prohibition of organizing any kind of gambling. For those who violated the rules, the village authority would impose a sanction in the form of fines like in particular amount of rice. So far, the local villagers were very obedient to the regulations and they lived their life relatively peacefully. (bud)

Yemenis square off in rival “Day of Rage” protests Reuters

SANAA – Tens of thousands of Yemenis squared off in street protests for and against the government on Thursday during an opposition-led “Day of Rage,” a day after President Ali Abdullah Saleh offered to step down in 2013. Antigovernment activists drew more than 20,000 in Sanaa, the biggest crowd since a wave of protests hit the Arabian Peninsula state two weeks ago, inspired by demonstrations that toppled Tunisia’s ruler and threaten Egypt’s president. But an equally large pro-Saleh protest also picked up steam, and supporters of the president who has ruled Yemen for more than three decades drove around the capital urging Yemenis over loudspeakers to join their counterdemonstrations. The protests in Sanaa fizzled out by midday, with demonstrators on both sides dispersing peacefully ahead of a traditional afternoon break to chew qat, a mild stimulant leaf widely consumed in Yemen. “The people want regime change,” anti-government protesters had shouted as they gathered near Sanaa University, a main rallying point. “No to corruption, no

to dictatorship.” Saleh, eyeing the unrest spreading in the Arab world, indicated on Wednesday he would leave office when his term ends in 2013, and promised that his son would not take over the reins of government, among a host of other political concessions. It was Saleh’s boldest gambit yet to stave off turmoil in Yemen, a key ally of Washington against al Qaeda, as he sought to avert a showdown with the opposition that might risk sparking an Egypt-style uprising in the deeply impoverished state. The stakes are high for Yemen, on the brink of becoming a failed state, as it tries to fight a resurgent al Qaeda wing, quell southern separatism, and cement peace with Shi’ite rebels in the north. Yemen’s biggest opposition party, the Islamist Islah, welcomed Saleh’s initiative but snubbed a presidential appeal to call off protests. Yet anti-government protesters appeared to lack consensus, with some calling for Saleh to get out while others wanted him to prove he would act on his promises. “What the president offered yesterday was just theater, I don’t trust him,” a protester, Mahmoud Abdullah, said in Sanaa.

WikiLeaks nominated for Nobel Peace Prize Associated Press Writer

OSLO, Norway – A Norwegian lawmaker has nominated WikiLeaks for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, saying Wednesday that its disclosures of classified documents promote world peace by holding governments accountable for their actions. The Norwegian Nobel Committee keeps candidates secret for 50 years, but those with nomination rights sometimes make their picks known. Snorre Valen, a 26-year-old legislator from Norway’s Socialist Left Party, told The Associated Press he handed in his nomination in person on Tuesday, the last day to put forth candidates. “I think it is important to raise a debate about freedom of expression and that truth is always the first casualty in war,” Valen said. “WikiLeaks wants to make governments accountable for their actions and that contributes to peace.” Valen also announced his choice on his blog, where he wrote that WikiLeaks had advanced the struggle for human rights, democracy and freedom of speech, just like last year’s winner, Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. Valen cited disclosures of nepotism and corruption in Tunisia’s

presidential family, saying WikiLeaks “made a small contribution to bringing down” that regime. The prize committee typically receives more than 200 nominations, so being nominated doesn’t say anything about a candidate’s chances of actually winning. And there’s no way of knowing for sure that people who announce candidates actually submitted a legitimate nomination to the award committee. Kristian Harpsviken, a leading Nobel-watcher and director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, said he didn’t consider WikiLeaks as a strong candidate for the 10 million kronor ($1.6 million) award. “The reason I think it’s unlikely is that there has been so much criticism of WikiLeaks, not least how they have handled identification issues of

people in the documents,” he said. “I don’t think it quite does the trick.” Harpsviken keeps a list of “possible and confirmed nominations,” based on public announcements and his own sources. His list this year includes WikiLeaks as well as Bradley Manning, the Army private accused of leaking material to the website. Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbayeva, Afghan human rights advocate Sima Samar, and several rights groups including U.S.-based Wings of Hope and Cuban opposition movement Damas de Blanco are also on the list. His own top guess is Russian rights group Memorial, followed by activists Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Ory Okolloh of Kenya. The committee will announce the winner in October.

CEIBA HUECA, Cuba – Relatives and friends of a Cuban woman have celebrated what they say is her 126th birthday, though that claim to longevity is not recognized internationally. Cuba’s Prensa Latina agency says Juana Bautista de la Candelaria Rodriguez has a civil registry

document that states she was born on Feb. 2, 1885, in the town of Ceiba Hueca, where she still lives. Her 125th birthday celebration last year was covered extensively in the island’s state-run media, but she isn’t recognized by the Los Angeles-based Gerontology Research Group, which verifies information for Guinness World Records. The claim would make her the world’s oldest person by more than a

decade. At 114 years old, American Besse Cooper is recognized as the world’s oldest person.

KUTA - AlamKulKul Boutique Resort would like to announce that that the health and safety of in-house guests is always our foremost concern. Therefore, all necessary precautions are taken to ensure that the resort is maintained to the highest international standards. This involves regular testing of our facilities including the swimming pools, water supply and air-conditioning units. Our most recent batch of testing dated 28th October 2010 concluded that samples from the pool and air-conditioning system were negative for any harmful viruses including legionella, which can result in Legionnaires disease. These tests were carried out by the Labratorium Kesehatan Masyarakyat (Community Health Lab) at Udayana University based on Australian and New Zealand standard testing methods (1998). lt is most unfortunate that a number of Australian tourists have returned home from Bali with suspected Legionnaires disease. However, Alam KulKul would like to reiterate that regular testing indicates that our facilities fully comply with international health standards and that no trace of this virus has been found at the property.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TNI prepares nine Hercules planes to evacuate citizens from Egypt Antara

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) has made available nine C-130 Hercules big transport aircraft to help evacuate the country’s citizens from Egypt. TNI Commander Admiral Agus Suhartono before meeting with House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Commission here on Wednesday however said that “the aircraft has not yet been used for efficiency and effectiveness.” He said “Boeing 747 is considered to be more effective for that purpose. A Hercules is only able to carry around 120 passengers; Boeing 747 has enough room for 420.” “That is three times the capacity of a Hercules. Perhaps by using Garuda planes it will be more efficient in terms of fuel consumption,” he said. Suhartono however said the TNI

JAKARTA – Indonesia admitted Tuesday that hundreds of mine and plantation companies are operating illegally on Borneo island, and promised to beef up law enforcement to protect forests and threatened species. The forestry ministry made the startling admission that less than 20 percent of plantation companies and less than 1.5 percent of mining firms had official operating permits in Central Kalimantan, on the Indonesian side of Borneo. “There are only 67 plantation companies out of 352 that operate legally in Central Kalimantan province, while there are only nine out of 615 mine units that operate legally,” the ministry said in a state-

ment. The findings were released after an investigation by a task force set up by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to look into the “forest mafia” — networks of miners, planters and officials blamed for rampant illegal land clearing. It found that violations of laws designed to protect Indonesia’s forests, home to endangered species such as orangutans and tigers, had “become widespread in a number of regions, especially in Central Kalimantan province”. Indonesia is the world’s third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, due mainly to deforestation by the palm oil and paper industries, which is fuelled by corruption. A University of Indonesia study

last year concluded that the Indonesian military acted as coordinator, financier and facilitator for illegal loggers in Borneo, where deforestation rates are among the fastest in the world. The forestry ministry promised to stop issuing new plantation and mine permits in the province and to cooperate with the Corruption Eradication Commission to enforce the law. Yudhoyono has been under pressure from environmentalists to implement a promised two-year moratorium on the clearing of natural forest and peatland, which was due to begin January 1. DENPASAR - Australia remained on top as a source of foreign tourist arrivals in Bali in 2010, contributing 24.90 percent of 2.57 million foreign tourists visiting the resort island last year. A total of 641,588 Australian tourists visited Bali last year, up 43.67 percent from 446,570 a year earlier, Chief of the Bali Provincial Statistics Office I Gede Suarsa said here on Thursday. Of the total, 629,798 came to Bali by direct flights from their country and 11,790 by cruise liners, he said. He said six of the top ten sources of foreign tourist arrivals last year contributed significant growth to the province’s tourist arrivals, while the number of tourist arrivals from the other four main source countries fell. Tourist arrivals from Australia rose 43.67 percent to 641,588 from 446,570, Malaysia 16.03 percent to 156,858 from 135,190, Taiwan 1.50 percent to 122,256 from 120,445, Singapore 73.96 percent to 97,402 from 56,992, Britain 2.91 percent to 96,412 from 93,688 and Germany 12.77 percent to 84,406 from 74,849. filled by glasses and no bricks or paras stone with Balinese ornaments, “I see this building has ignored Balinese ornaments, as the walls are made from glasses.” Kumara stated even though the building has permit, but it is avoiding it’s physical essentials. Moreover it’s on a protocol route and has to be suitable with what’s stated on the Building Permit, “Being in a main street like this, I’m sure it got it’s Building Permit yet it’s implementation has to be supervised.” He also clarified that Public Work Units should take action now and not wait until it’s completed hundred percent, “This building clearly does not

have Balinese ornament at all, so don’t let it operate as that will complicate and waste time.” These problems and statements were also revealed during a raid by the committee at Denpasar Permit Agency Office last Monday (31/1) where Head of the Agency, A.A. DENPASAR – Tenth of runners representing 25 countries took the world harmony torch throughout Denpasar on Wednesday, February 2, 2011. The runners started to run in Sanur and finish in Renon, Denpasar.

Directions Cut fish into serving portions and rub salt all over. Deep-fry and drain on absorbent paper. Heat oil and saute sliced onions until lightly brown. Add sambal oelek, laos, lemon grass, tamarind juice, ginger, brown sugar and soy sauce. Heat thoroughly. Place fried fish in deep serving dish and pour sauce over it. Serve with rice. Directions Cut steak in 1/2" thick strips. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add Spanish onion slices and garlic and fry gently until soft. Add beef and fry, stirring, until brown. Add spices to beef and cook 2 minutes. Add coconut, brown sugar, lemon juice and beef stock; stir well. Simmer gently, uncovered, 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until mixture is thickened and dry. Stir mixture more frequently towards end of cooking time to prevent sticking. BUSINESS Sony profit drops as TVs erase gaming gains Reuters

TOKYO – Japan’s Sony Corp posted a 5.9 percent fall in third-quarter profit on Thursday as a price war hit its TV unit and a stronger yen weighed, and lowered its revenue forecast on slower-than-expected TV sales. The consumer electronics giant, which competes with Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics in televisions and Canon Inc and Nikon in digital cameras, has been struggling to keep pace with rivals in terms of profits and products. Since CEO Howard Stringer took the helm in 2005, the company’s share price has fallen by a quarter and Sony has failed to replicate its early successes with iconic products such as the Walkman and PlayStation game console. Sony reported an operating profit of 137.52 billion yen ($1.68 billion) versus 146.1 billion yen in the same period a year earlier, beating an average quarterly estimate of 127 billion yen in a poll of eight analysts by Thomson Reuters. “In this strong-yen environment we see this as a pretty healthy result,” Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato told reporters. “We are getting stronger, but we feel we are still only partway

there,” he added. The maker of Vaio PCs and Bravia TVs left its full-year operating profit forecast unchanged at 200 billion yen, compared with a consensus estimate of 217 billion yen in a poll of 23 analysts by Thomson Reuters. It cut its annual revenue forecast by 3 percent to 7.2 trillion yen citing lower-than-expected sales in the consumer, professional and devices segment, which includes LCD TVs. Operating income in that segment dropped by almost half in the third quarter, while profit more than doubled in the network products and service division, which includes games, partly on brisk sales of the latest version of Gran Turismo motor racing game, Sony said. It cut its forecast for sales of TVs in the full year to March 31 to 23 million units, down from its previous forecast of 25 million. But it kept its forecast for PS3 game console sales unchanged at 15 million units. Shares in Sony have fallen 21

percent since a high reached on March 23 last year, largely reflecting the yen’s rise against the dollar and euro, which eats into offshore earnings. In contrast, shares in Samsung hit an all-time high late last month on an expected rebound after hitting its worst profit in six quarters. The results came a week after Sony unveiled a new portable games device, the Next Generation Portable (NGP), aiming to compete with Nintendo Co Ltd and fend off competition from Apple Inc’s iPhone. The NGP, announced alongside a plan to make PlayStation games available on other makers’ Android-based mobile devices, was generally well received, but analysts said its specifications would likely make it more expensive than Nintendo’s DS, potentially deterring some consumers. In early Asian trade, New York’s main futures contract, light sweet crude for March, climbed 47 cents to $91.24.

Brent North Sea crude for March was 22 cents higher at $102.56. Qantas said the price of jet fuel had risen from $88 a barrel in September to $117 now. The surcharge increase is the first since January 2008, around the time crude prices first broke the $100 mark, and follows similar moves by Singapore Airlines and British Airways. Qantas said it would not increase the surcharge on its low-cost carrier Jetstar but will adjust fares and hike baggage charges. Shares in Qantas rose 2.48 percent following news of the increase.

LOUISVILLE – Yum Brands Inc., owner of the Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC fast-food brands, said Wednesday that its fourth-quarter net income rose 27 percent with robust growth overseas and a rebound in the U.S. The company’s operating profit in the U.S., where it has struggled as recession-weary consumers are still eating at home more than they used to, rose 15 percent for the period. The figure fell 2 percent for the third quarter. The improved U.S. showing comes as Yum works to put its Long John Silver’s and A&W restaurant chains up for sale so it can focus on its growing international business. Yum’s overseas expansion is in high gear. It opened 507 new restaurants in China and 884 in other countries outside the U.S. last year. It operates more than 37,000 restaurants around the world. Louisville-based Yum reported net income of $274 million for the three months that ended Dec. 25, or 56 cents per share. That compares with $216 million, or 45 cents per share, a year earlier. The company’s fourth-quarter revenue was $3.56 billion, up from $3.37 billion. The results beat analysts’ expectations in some respects and fell short in others. They expected Yum to earn 60 cents per share on revenue of $3.51 billion, according to FactSet. Analysts typically exclude one-time items. Yum shares closed at $47.73, up 31 cents, before the report was released. The stock rose another $1.28, or 2.7 percent, to $49.01 after hours. NEW YORK – The Recording Academy is finally getting some satisfaction, with Mick Jagger’s first appearance on the Grammy stage. The Rolling Stones frontman will perform at the Feb. 13 ceremony as part of a tribute to soul great Solomon Burke, who died last year. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer opened for the Rolling Stones several times during his career comeback late in life. Jagger will perform with soul singer Raphael Saadiq during the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, which will air live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles (8 p.m. EST). “We’re thrilled, delighted, excited and very much looking forward to Mick doing his debut on the Grammy stage,” said Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Record-

ing Academy. “It’s extraordinary to many of us that the fact is, this will be the first time; he has never performed on the Grammy stage.” This won’t be Jagger’s first appearance on a Grammy telecast. The romantic comedy, with a starry cast that includes Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and US actors Owen Wilson and Adrien Brody, will be shown out of competition at the world’s most prestigious film bash. “‘Midnight in Paris’ is a wonderful love letter to Paris,” festival director Thierry Fremaux said of the period comedy set in the 1920s. “It’s a film in which Woody Allen takes a deeper look at the issues raised in his last films: our relationship with history, art, pleasure and life,” he said in a statement. US actor Robert De Niro is the president of the jury of this year’s festival, which opens on May 11 on the French Riviera. WASHINGTON – An orbiting NASA telescope is finding whole new worlds of possibilities in the search for alien life, spotting more than 50 potential planets that appear to be in the habitable zone. In just a year of peering out at a small slice of the galaxy, the Kepler telescope has discovered 1,235 possible planets outside our solar system. Amazingly, 54 of them are seemingly in the zone that could be hospitable to life — that is, not too hot or too cold, Kepler chief scientist William Borucki said. Until now, only two planets outside our solar system were even thought to be in the “Goldilocks zone.” And both those discoveries are highly disputed. Fifty-four possibilities is “an enormous amount, an inconceivable amount,” Borucki said. “It’s amazing to see this huge number because up to now, we’ve

had zero.” The more than 1,200 newfound celestial bodies are not confirmed as planets yet, but Borucki estimates 80 percent of them will eventually be verified. At least one other astronomer believes Kepler could be 90 percent accurate. After that, it’s another big step in proving that a confirmed planet has some of the basic conditions needed to support life, such as the proper size, composition, temperature and distance from its star. More advanced aspects of habitability such as atmospheric conditions and the presence of water and carbon require telescopes that aren’t built

yet. Just because a planet is in the habitable zone doesn’t mean it has life. Mars is a good example of that. And even if some these planets are found to contain life, it may not be intelligent life; it could be bacteria or mold or some kind of life form people can’t even imagine. All the celestial bodies Kepler looks at are in our Milky Way galaxy, but they are so far away that traveling there is not a realistic option. In some cases it would take many millions of years with current technology. But what Kepler is finding in distant parts of the galaxy could be applied to exploring closer stars, astronomers say. “Our grandchildren will have to decide what’s the next step,” Borucki said at a NASA news conference. “Do they want to go there? Do they want to send a robot?”

WASHINGTON – A survey of oyster habitats around the world has found that the succulent mollusks are disappearing fast and 85 percent of their reefs have been lost due to disease and over-harvesting. Most of the remaining wild oysters in the world, or about 75 percent, can be found in five locations in North America, said the study published in BioScience, the journal of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. An international team of researchers led by Michael Beck of the Nature Conservancy and the University of California, Santa Cruz, examined the condition of native oyster reefs in 40 ecoregions, including 144 bays. “Oyster reefs are at less than 10 percent of their prior abundance in most bays (70 percent) and ecoregions (63 percent),” said the study. “They are functionally extinct — in that they lack any significant ecosystem role and remain at less than one percent of prior abundances in many bays (37 percent) and ecoregions (28 percent) — particularly in North America, Australia and Europe.” By averaging the loss among all regions, the researchers came up

with an estimate that 85 percent of oyster reef ecosystems have been lost, but said that figure was likely low because some areas lacked historical records for comparison. The study also did not include oyster reefs in parts of South Africa, China, Japan, and North and South Korea. Other studies and observations in those areas “suggest that wild oyster abundance was much higher in the past and that reefs have declined greatly in abundance or have disappeared altogether,” the authors said. The one bright spot in the oyster world was in the Gulf of Mexico, where native oyster catches are “the highest in the world despite significant declines in abundance and reefs,” according to the study. Five regions where oyster catches were globally the highest were located in eastern North America, from the Virginia coast southward and also in the Gulf of Mexico. Oysters are important to ecosystems because they filter impurities from water and provide food and employment for people living in coastal communities. The decline in oyster population often begins when trawling or dredging destroys the structure of parts of the reef, leaving surviving oysters vulnerable to stresses in the environment.

HIRBET MADRAS, Israel – Israeli archaeologists presented a newly uncovered 1,500-year-old church in the Judean hills on Wednesday, including an unusually well-preserved mosaic floor with images of lions, foxes, fish and peacocks. The Byzantine church located southwest of Jerusalem, excavated over the last two months, will be visible only for another week before archaeologists cover it again with soil for its own protection. The small basilica with an exquisitely decorated floor was active between the fifth and seventh centuries A.D., said the dig’s leader, Amir

Ganor of the Israel Antiquities Authority. He said the floor was “one of the most beautiful mosaics to be uncovered in Israel in recent years.” “It is unique in its craftsmanship and level of preservation,” he said. Archaeologists began digging at the site, known as Hirbet Madras, in December. The Antiquities Authority discovered several months earlier that antiquities thieves had begun plundering the ruins, which sit on an uninhabited hill not far from an Israeli farming community. Though an initial survey suggested the building was a synagogue, the excavation revealed stones carved with crosses, identifying it as a church. The

building had been built atop another structure around 500 years older, dating to Roman times, when scholars believe the settlement was inhabited by Jews. Hewn into the rock underneath that structure is a network of tunnels that archaeologists believe were used by Jewish rebels fighting Roman armies in the second century A.D. Stone steps lead down from the floor of church to a small burial cave, which scholars suggest might have been venerated as the burial place of the Old Testament prophet Zecharia. Ganor said the church would remain covered until funding was obtained to open it as a tourist site.

LOS ANGELES – Derrick Rose scored 32 points and the Chicago Bulls beat the Clippers 10688 on Wednesday night for their sixth straight victory, snapping Los Angeles’ nine-game home winning streak. The Bulls never trailed as they began a five-game road trip with their 23rd victory in 29 games — a stretch that began one game after Carlos Boozer returned to the lineup from a broken right hand. Luol Deng scored 26 points and Boozer added 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulls’ 34-14 start is their best since 1997-98, when they had the same record after 48 games en route to their sixth NBA title in an eight-year span. They are tied with Miami for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference, three games behind Boston. Ten of their wins have been decided by five points or fewer. Rose, the only player among the league’s top 10 in scoring and assists, shot 11 for 18 and had 11 assists. LOS ANGELES – Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has not entered the Tour of California, but changes in the event’s drug test program revealed Wednesday open the door for him to do so. Organizers of America’s biggest cycling race, to be contested May 15-22, will have the US AntiDoping Agency (USADA) administer drug tests for the event rather than the International Cycling Union. The switch, which sees USADA handle competition tests as well as pre-event random drug tests that start February 15, led the US race to rescind a practice used last year that barred competitors who were being investigated for doping. A US grand jury has spent months looking into doping in pro cycling with Armstrong and several of his associates having testified since Floyd Landis, an admitted dope cheat who forfeited a Tour de France title, accused Armstrong of doping. Armstrong, who was thought to be looking at the Tour of California as a possible close to his fabled ca-

reer, has denied taking performance-enhancing drugs but might have been banned under the old under-investigation restriction. “Every athlete is entitled to full and due process before being removed from the playing field,” said US Anti-Doping Agency chief executive Travis Tygart. Andrew Messick, the Tour of California president, said there is no entry from Armstrong or his RadioShack team. Armstrong, 39, is coming off a 67th-place showing in last week’s Tour Down Under in Australia, what he says was his final race outside the United States. Simoncelli ends Sepang test on top Marco Simoncelli was the surprising pace-setter on the final day of MotoGP testing at Sepang on Thursday. The Gresini Honda rider posted a best time of 2m00.757s, the best time of the three days of testing at the Malaysian circuit. Simoncelli was followed closely by a group of riders who also broke into the 2m00s bracket, with Casey Stoner just 0.054 off the Italian’s pace on the works Honda. World champion Jorge Lorenzo was also less than a tenth behind the leading bike on his Yamaha. Andrea Dovizioso on the second works Honda, and Ben Spies on the Yamaha completed the top five, with yesterday’s pace-setter Dani Pedrosa down in sixth position. Valentino Rossi finished down in 10th as he continued to acclimatise to the new Ducati, the Italian around three tenths of a second slower than team-mate Nicky Hayden.

Kubica upbeat despite tricky first day ROBERT Kubica says he has every reason to feel upbeat about the potential of his new Renault, despite a day of mixed fortunes at Valencia on Wednesday. Although Kubica ended the day fifth overall on the timesheets, he was left slightly frustrated with the handling of the car and a few niggling problems that prevented him getting more mileage. Despite those factors, Kubica said he was keeping a positive frame of mind about his first experience of the R31, as he prepared for a second day of running on Thursday. “Today was quite a different day because of a few car issues that we had this morning, and the main difference was the tyres,” said the Pole. “So it is very difficult to get the right feeling. “Feeling wise it is not as good as it was last year but I hope it will be the same feeling for everybody. So we will see.” Kubica believes that high tyre degradation made it difficult to judge the ultimate performance of his car - although he could already get some good feedback about its KERS and moveable rear wing. “I think tyres are degrading quite a lot here, which has a big influence on the lap times,” he said. “But today was not really ideal for seeing the lap time and performance, but of course it is always nice to have a good feeling and a competitive car. But we did many laps and we did operate KERS from the beginning,

which was working perfectly, and also the rear wing. “So actually there were quite a few positive things where we did not have any issues – which is always good. We had a couple of issues with the car which we hope to solve, and actually we solved them and they could run pretty well.” Although rivals Red Bull Racing and Ferrari have been fastest so far in early testing with their new cars, Kubica says past experience with BMW Sauber in 2008 has shown him not to read anything into the first few days of running. “I will repeat again the same story

– but I still have in my mind 2008. We had the Valencia test with some faces [at the team] like we know we will stop racing the day after, because we were really slow. And then one-and-a-half months later we were on the front row in Australia, so things can change very quickly – especially in Valencia. “The track characteristic can be quite strange here, so that is why I am not really looking for the feeling, as it is really a special track. The many problems you get here you will never get them on 80 per cent of other tracks during the grands prix.”
