Vehicles overloading Gilimanuk Negara (Bali Post) –
The number of tourist pri vate vehicles going back to Java through Gilimanuk was overloaded last Sunday (1/1) with its peak at night, queuing for hours. Even the harbour has prepared 30 ships for passengers and goods crossing, it is still overwhelming. Vehicles with plate numbers from Central, East and West Java started to enter the harbour from 5 pm local time then its total keep on increasing by night with additional busses and goods vehicles. To anticipate the Harbour opened two lockets, one for cars and one for busses also goods vehicles where for cars four queues were made while for busses and goods
vehicles were diverted through manuver parking space. Until the early morning, the queue reached 300 meters with approximately 4-5 hours queue for the vehicles to get to the ship’s entrance. Some impatient passengers did cause some clashes when a car was trying to get through by force. A passenger also fainted and got straight help from workers. The queue was quiet after 4 am local time. TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s presidential campaign has taken a dark turn, with the opposition challenger accusing intelligence services under the control of incumbent President Ma Ying-jeou of tracking her campaign events for political advantage. The allegations — unproven and denied by Ma — conjure up memories of Taiwan’s unsavory one-party past, when Ma’s party, the Nationalists, used their total control of the state apparatus to persecute opponents. While the island has since morphed into one of Asia’s most dynamic democracies, many senior civil servants may still believe that serving the top political echelon involves cutting corners. “Even if the president did not give an order for monitoring, the heads of intelligence were appointed by him, and they could take the elections as a good time to return the favors,” the mass-circulation Apple Daily said in an editorial published Friday. The Jan. 14 poll pits Ma, 61, against Tsai Ing-wen, 55, of the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party. Polls indicate an extremely tight race. TEHRAN - Iran will take action if a U.S. aircraft carrier which left the area because of Iranian naval exercises returns to the Gulf, the state news agency quoted army chief Ataollah Salehi as saying on Tuesday. “Iran will not repeat its warning ... the enemy’s carrier has been moved to the Sea of Oman because of our drill. I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf,” Salehi told IRNA. “I advise, recommend and warn them (the Americans) over the return of this carrier to the Persian Gulf because we are not in the habit of warning more than once,” the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Salehi as saying. Salehi did not name the aircraft carrier or give details of the action Iran might take if it returned.
Iran completed 10 days of naval exercises in the Gulf on Monday, and said during the drills that if foreign powers imposed sanctions on its crude exports it could shut the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 percent of the world’s traded oil is shipped. The U.S. Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, said it would not allow shipping to be disrupted in the strait. Iran said on Monday it had successfully test-fired two long-range missiles during its naval drill, flexing its military muscle in the face of mounting Western pressure over its
controversial nuclear program. Iran also said it had no intention of closing the Strait of Hormuz but had carried out “mock” exercises on shutting the strategic waterway. Tehran denies Western accusations that it is secretly trying to build atomic bombs, saying it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity. The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve the Islamic state’s nuclear row with the West. The European Union is considering following the United States in banning imports of Iranian crude oil. U.S. President Barack Obama signed new sanctions against Iran into law on Saturday, stepping up the pressure by adding sanctions on financial institutions that deal with Iran’s central bank.

Australia on Tuesday said Fiji’s announcement that it would lift emergency laws was a “first step” but urged the Pacific state to restore democracy as soon as possible. Fiji’s military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama said Monday that the regulations, including tight censorship of the news media and a ban on public meetings, would be removed and talks begin on a new constitution. “What we are seeing from Commodore Bainimarama is the announcement of a first step,” Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said.
“But from the point of view of the Australian government all steps need to be taken to restore democracy to Fiji.” “That has been our consistent call.” In his New Year message, Bainimarama said the emergency laws -- which were imposed in 2009 after a Fiji court ruled his 2006 coup was illegal -- would be lifted on Saturday to pave the way for consultation on a new constitution. “I will, over the next few weeks, announce the nationwide consultation process which will commence in February 2012,” Bainimarama said. Under the Bainimarama regime,
Fiji’s constitution was repealed, the judiciary sacked and the police and military given powers to detain people without charge. Australia and New Zealand have called stridently for a return to democracy in the nation, a significant economic and travel hub in the South Pacific, and Gillard warned that Bainimarama had failed in the past to deliver on pledges. Initial promises for an early return to democracy failed to result in elections, leaving Fiji facing sanctions from many countries and suspension from the Commonwealth. Bainimarama has promised elections in 2014.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Australia to grant four Hercules planes to Indonesia Antara
JAKARTA - The Australian government is expected to grant four C-130 Hercules planes to Indonesia as the technical teams from the two countries may meet in the middle of this January, spokesman for the Defense Ministry, Hartind Asrin, told ANTARA here Tuesday. The two teams are expected to discuss technical matters on giving the grant, he said, adding that the grant was earlier expected to be given in 2011, Hartind said. Besides in Jakarta, the teams would also meet in Australia to di-
rectly inspect the four Hercules aircraft. The Australian grant has been approved by the US as the producer of Hercules, Hartind said. Meanwhile, planning assistant to the Air Force Chief of Staff, Rodi Suprasodjo, said the Indonesian Air
Force needs 30 units of Hercules aircraft and now it has only 21. The grant will bring the existing number and the rest will be met by buying the aircraft. “The 30 Hercules planes will include two units of aircraft tanks, two units of VIP aircraft and 26 operational aircraft for two battalions,” he said. Rodi said the one that will be granted is Type H which will be used by the Indonesian Air Force to replace Type B which has become already too old.

JAKARTA - Inflation in Indonesia fell in December to its lowest in 20 months, data showed Monday, with analysts saying the central bank may cut its benchmark rate in February or March. The consumer price index rose 3.79 percent year on year last month, slower than the 4.15 percent in November, according to data from the Central Statistics Agency. The index rose 3.43 percent in March 2010 compared to the previous year. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food prices, slowed to 4.34 percent year on year in December, compared with 4.44 percent in November. For all of 2011, inflation reached 3.79 percent, lower than the central bank’s target range of 4 to 6 percent,
and far below the previous year’s 6.96 percent. Economists said that Bank Indonesia (BI), the country’s central bank, would keep its benchmark rate at 6 percent when its policy board meets on January 12. “The central bank may refrain from cutting its rate next week partly due to rupiah weakness... (but) the euro-zone crisis will likely continue to deteriorate and BI could cut the rate by 25 basis points in March,” Standard Chartered economist Eric Sugandi told Dow Jones Newswires. “We expect Bank Indonesia to stand pat on Jan. 12, but a tamer inflation outlook this month could prompt the monetary authority to cut rates in February,” Bank Central Asia economist David Sumual told Dow Jones.

Manik Gumawang Temple Besakih Preserve Historical and Archaeological Values BALINE E community may not have been so familiar with the name of Manik umawang Temple. This temple is situated at Palak Hamlet, Besakih Village, Rendang arangasem, about 3 km to the south of Jalan Toya Sah Besakih, arangasem. The temple is inseparable from the history of Ida Bhatara Bang Manik Angkeran when met Dukuh Sakti Belatung. Later, Ida Bhatara Bang Manik Angkeran married his daughter named Luh Warsiki. From the marriage, they had a son named Ida Wang Bang Banyak Wide. He is the ancestor of the Arya Wang Pinatih, denoting the descendant of Dukuh Sakti Belatung and Ida Bathara Bang Manik Angkeran. By accident, there is now a development plan of Manik umawang at Besakih arangasem. One of the devotees, I Wayan Sudiarta, invited all the descendants of Arya Wang Pinatih throughout Bali and beyond Bali to work hand in hand and pay devotional service in repairing and building the Manik umawang Temple. This temple had never been
renovated. Various buildings and shrines seemed to have been damaged. Chief of Manik umawang Temple, Besakih arangasem, I usti Ngurah Alit, invited the people of Bali to take part in the renovation and construction of the Manik umawang Temple. Meanwhile, Ida Pedanda Wayahan Bun from eria Pejeng Sanur Denpasar as high priest and renovation and construction committee of the Manik umawang Temple disclosed that repair and construction of the temple should be carried out carefully so the historical and archaeological values would not vanish because they were also the taksu (divine inspiration) of the temple. He observed the shrines at Manik umawang Te m p l e h a d h i g h h i s t o r i c a l values and very magical aura. On that account, the previous shrines should be well maintained. Historical values of the Manik umawang Temple are described in the chronicle of Arya Wang Bang Pinatih. It is where the location of pawis-

Devide the mixture among 20 packets made of banana leaves. Fold the ends of the packets and seal. Steam the packets for about 25 minutes until done. Remove and set aside. Broil the packets over medium heat until liquid has evaporated. Makes 20 Wraps
Sweet Eggplant Stew (Semur Terong) Ingredients 1 lb. eggplant 4 Tbs. vegetable oil 1 Tbs. shallots 1 clove garlic, sliced ½ cup water 1 Tbs. sweet soy sauce ½ tsp. pepper ¼ tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. vinegar ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar Directions Cut the unpeeled eggplant into ½-inch-thick slices, and then cut the slices in half. Fry lightly in 2 Tbs. of oil for 2 minutes, or until light brown and softened. Set aside. Stir fry the shallots and garlic in the remaining oil until light brown. Add the water, sweet aoy sauce, pepper, nutmeg, vinegar, salt and sugar. Let all of these ingredients cook for approximately 3 minutes to prepare the sauce. Cook the eggplant slices in the sauce for additional 2 minutes to distribute the flavors. Shake the pan several times to mix but not mash the eggplant. Serve hot or at room temperature.

Cliff Temple Tegallinggah IBP
Within a few years ago, the Bali Historic Preservation and Antiquities Agency discovered a group of ancient relics in the form of cliff temple at Tegallinggah Hamlet, Bedulu Village, Blahbatuh, Gianyar. They were discovered by Krijgsman, a Dutch archeologist, while doing an excavation investigation to a small building carved on a precipice rock stone at the valley of Pakerisan River. To visit the cliff temple attraction, visitors can reach the location by taking the Denpasar-Gianyar road section. Turn right on the petrol station at Semebaung and there you will encounter a signboard showing the direction to Tegallinggah Cliff Temple. The distance from Denpasar is approximately 24 km and from Gianyar around 3 km. The building discovered by Krijgsman was in the form of temple entrance gates to a cave that had been buried by soil. After excavated, in fact they were stairs leading upwards. On the right side of the gates lie larger gates but have collapsed. Then, behind the relics there is a courtyard whose rear wall has 2 carved temples on the stone rock. Top side of niches containing the temples have collapsed. Meanwhile, on the left side of the gates lies an unfinished monastery. Its roof is roughly carved on stone rock. Apparently, this place was left unfinished after the collapse of the northern part of the group caused by earthquake. Across the river was also found a bunch of niches of hermitage carved on rock cliff. Before we get to location of the temple, we will go through some fish ponds that are intended for people who have a hobby of fishing.

“Iron Lady” enjoys strong bow in limited release Reuters
LOS ANGELES - “The Iron Lady” proved her mettle this weekend.The Weinstein Company’s biopic of Britain’s former prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, opened to a remarkable $280,409 at four theaters -- a per-screen average of $70,102. LOS ANGELES - “Queen of Soul” singer Aretha Franklin has become the latest celebrity to announce an engagement over the holidays, joining a list including “Aerosmith” frontman Steven Tyler and basketball superstar LeBron James. Franklin, 69, and her friend William ‘Willie’ Wilkerson hope to marry later this year on a sandy Miami beach with a private party to celebrate afterward aboard a yacht, a spokeswoman for Franklin confirmed on Monday. “We’re looking at June or July for our date, and no I’m not pregnant, LOL!,” Franklin said in a statement. Franklin, 69, was sidelined by a mysterious ailment at about this time last year, but overcame her health scare in January and shed 85 pounds on the road to better health. The legendary singer of 1960s hits like “Chain of Fools” and “Baby I Love You” sang at her own 69th birthday party in March. Tyler, 63, rocked longtime girlfriend Erin Brady, 38, with a proposal, too, his representative confirmed to celebrity media, but no details were given. In recent days ahead of New Year’s Eve, the two have been photographed in Hawaii with Brady showing off a new diamond engagement ring wrapped around her finger. Tyler and Brady have been together since 2006. It will be his third marriage. James and his longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson also became engaged over the New Year holiday weekend.

WiFi and dual-displays for photographers Samsung’s newest dual-display camera, the DV300F, sports enhanced dual LCDs and automatic photo sharing with built-in WiFi. While more and more people are using their smartphone cameras in place of a dedicated point-andshoot devices -- Apple’s iPhone 4 has become the most popular camera on photo sharing website Flickr -- there is still a big market for such cameras, especially for devices that provide advanced onboard features, sharing and editing options. Samsung is hoping that the ability to directly upload pictures to
photo- and video-sharing sites such as Facebook, Picasa and YouTube will convince consumers to opt for its new DV300F. The DV300F point-and-shoot camera slots itself into Samsung’s 2View/DualView range (which also includes the PL170, PL120, ST600 and ST700) but is the first 2View model to offer WiFi connectivity. Spec-wise the camera features a 16 Megapixel resolution, a 5x optical zoom, a 1.5” front-facing
display and a 3” display at the rear, and 25mm wide-angle lens. There are also plenty of built-in editing options including ‘Magic Frame,’ picture-within-a-picture, Funny Face modes, Split Shot, Artistic Brush, and Motion Photo (freeze frame around a moving subject while everything else remains still) effects. The DV300F is just one of many products Samsung will unveil during the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. The camera is expected to arrive in March for $199.
ELECTION day is a ways off for ‘merica, but Google has announced a new tool at the start of the year to make sure everyone can easily keep up with the 2012 US election. The election hub comes just in time for the Iowa caucuses. Google’s new site at google.com/elections allows citizens to “study, watch, discuss, learn about, participate in and perhaps make an impact on the digital campaign trail as it blazes forward to Tuesday, November 6, 2012,” writes Eric Hysen on the official company blog. The site is partially a focused version of Google News, with filtering options for the various Republican candidates as well as Obama. There is also a section that filters for news on the major issues such as immigration, healthcare and government spending. Alongside the US edition, Google has created an Egyptian edtion with coverage of the different parties as well as filters for major issues. Expanding from the article aggregation, the trends page of the election hub allows the tracking of search volume, mentions within articles and blogs as well as how many views candidates are drawing on YouTube. Along with the Trends page, On the Ground lets users track news events on the map as they pop up. Currently it’s limited to Iowa, but it’ll be interesting to watch the map populate as the ball gets rolling. The site also has a productivity tool kit for campaign workers as well as well as journalists. Besides the web presence, the Atlantic Wire points out that Google is creating media hangout centers for journalists who are physically covering the election. For the Iowa caucus at the Polk County Convention Complex, Google has a swanky little setup populated with bean bags, chairs,couches, touchscreen TVs, tech help center, coffee and “local cuisine,” as well as two treadmills–all to make election coverage and consumption easier for us, so there’s no reason to be uniformed this election year. “There’s no question that the Internet is set to deliver more political information, opinion and news than any other medium throughout the 2012 U.S. elections,” wrote Hysen.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif — For most of her 100 years, Minka Disbrow tried to find out what became of the precious baby girl she gave up for adoption after being raped as a teen. She hoped, but never imagined, she’d see her Betty Jane again. The cruel act of violence bore in Disbrow an enduring love for the child. She kept a black and white photograph of the baby bundled in blankets and tucked inside a basket. It was the last she saw of the girl — until the phone rang in her California apartment in 2006 with the voice of an Alabama man and a story she could have only dreamed. Disbrow, the daughter of Dutch immigrants, weathered a harsh childhood milking cows on South Dakota dairy farms. Her stepfather thought high school was for city kids who had nothing else to do. She finished eighth grade in a country schoolhouse with just one teacher and worked long hours at the dairy.
On a summer day in 1928 while picnicking with girls from a sewing class, Disbrow and her friend Elizabeth were jumped by three men as they went for a walk in their long dresses. Both were raped. “We didn’t know what to do. We didn’t know what to say. So when we went back, nothing was said,” Disbrow recalled. Months passed. Her body began to change. Disbrow, who had been told babies were brought by storks, didn’t know what was happening. Her mother and stepfather sent her to a Lutheran home for pregnant girls. At 17, she gave birth to a blond-haired baby with a deep dimple in her chin and named her Betty Jane. In her heart, Disbrow longed to keep her. But her head and her mother told her she couldn’t bring an infant back to the farm. A pastor and his wife were looking to adopt a child. She hoped they could give Betty Jane the home she couldn’t. “I loved that baby so much. I wanted what was best,” Disbrow said.

The team announced recently that it would not take part in the Jerez test on February 7-10 in order to spend extra time developing its new W03 machine. But the German believes that taking such a tactical approach will pay off in the long term and prevent a repeat of the team’s uncompetitive start to the 2011 campaign. “It is just the choice that they have made and I am happy with that,” Rosberg told AUTOSPORT. “It is the compromise between testing early enough and having enough time to develop. And they need to find a middle way - and they have decided that that is
the best way to do it.” Rosberg believes that the new technical structure at the team, including 2011 arrivals Geoff Willis and Aldo Costa, will ensure that a late start does not have a knock-on effect on the team’s early-season form. “With the way the factory is going now, I am confident,” he added. “This year we would not have managed to do the first race if we had run the car that late, but with the way the factory is now optimised, I am confident that we can quite happily make it happen and the car can race very soon after the first test - with just a few bits and pieces that need to be sorted out. That shows already that the team is a big improvement.”

Peterhansel, who has nine Dakar wins to his name on four and two wheels, began the stage third in the standings behind his X-raid Mini team-mates Leonid Novitskiy and Krzysztof Holowczyc. But he completed the 180-mile timed section of the 483-mile stage from Santa Rosa de la Plata to San Rafael in 2h48m12s, and this was easily enough to turn a 9s deficit into an overall lead of 2m28s. It appeared that this would be enough to give him a stage win, but he had not bargained on Al-Attiyah, who lost 9m50s to engine problems on stage one, completing the day’s running 54s faster than anbody else. Al-Attiyah’s drive brought his Robby Gordon-run Hummer to within 8m47s of Peterhansel’s lead, although with four drivers between himself and the Frenchman. Al-Attiyah’s team boss Robby Gordon was third fastest on the stage, 2m42s slower than the Qatari, and moved into second place overall as a result. The NASCAR regular had been fastest at the first checkpoint, but ran into problems later on in the stage. “Last night we were given the road book for the bikes, not the cars, so we got lost trying to find a couple of the checkpoints,” said Gordon at the stage finish. “And then later on we were in the dust of [Giniel] de Villiers, and I clobbered a rock, so we got a puncture that we had to change and lost some time.” Holowczyc dropped to third in his Mini, 5s behind Gordon, with Toyota driver de Villiers fourth, a further 1m16s back.
