LOS ANGELES - Brad Pitt will undergo drug and alcohol tests as part of a temporary agreement with his estranged wife Angelina Jolie that will allow him to see their six children, two people familiar with the agreement said on Friday. The temporary agreement, which will run until Oct. 20, was the first breakthrough in the bitter split between the superstar couple since Jolie filed for divorce on Sept. 20. The actress cited “the health of the family” and sought full physical custody of the children. Pitt, 52, and Jolie, 41, both agreed to undergo individual counseling, and Pitt’s initial visit with the children will take place with a therapist, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. No ruling or decision has been made on who will eventually have legal or physical custody, they said. Representatives of Pitt and Jolie did not return calls for comment on Friday. Media reports say that since their separation on Sept. 15, Pitt has not seen the three biological and three adopted children he had with Jolie. The couple, dubbed Brangelina during their decade-long romance, split following an incident on a private plane in which Pitt was

Ethiopians killed in stampede after police fire warning shots during protest
ADDIS ABABA - Police in Ethiopia’s Oromiya region fired teargas and warning shots on Sunday to disperse anti-government protesters at a religious festival, triggering a stampede that the opposition party said killed at least 50 people. The government did not give a precise death toll resulting from chaotic scenes during the annual festival where some people chanted slogans against the government and waved a rebel group’s flag. But it said “lives were lost” and that several were injured. Sporadic protests have erupted in Oromiya in the last two years, initially sparked by a land row but increasingly turning more broadly against the government. Since late 2015, scores of protesters have been killed in clashes with police. These developments highlight tensions in the country where the govern-
ment has delivered stellar economic growth rates but faced criticism from opponents and rights group that it has trampled on political freedoms. Thousands of people had gathered for the annual Irreecha festival of thanksgiving in the town of Bishoftu, about 40 km (25 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa. Crowds chanted “we need freedom” and “we need justice”, preventing community elders, deemed close to the government, from delivering their speeches at the festival. Some protesters waved the red, green and yellow flag of the Oromo Liberation Front, a rebel group
branded a “terrorist” organisation by the government, witnesses said. When police fired teargas and guns into the air, crowds fled and created a stampede, some of them plunging into a deep ditch, witnesses said. The witnesses said they saw people dragging out a dozen or more victims, showing no obvious sign of life. Half a dozen people, also motionless, were also seen being taken by pick-up truck to a hospital, one witness said. “As a result of the chaos, lives were lost and several of the injured were taken to hospital,” the government communications office said in a statement, without giving figures. “Those responsible will face justice.” Merera Gudina, chairman of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, told Reuters at least 50 people
were killed, saying his group had been talking to families of the victims. He said the government tried to use the event to show Oromiya was calm. “But residents still protested,” he said. The government blames rebel groups and dissidents abroad for stirring up the protests and provoking violence. It dismisses charges that it clamps down on free speech or its opponents. Protesters had chanted slogans against Oromo People’s Democratic Organisation, one of the four regional parties that make up the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front, which has ruled the country for quarter of a century. In a 2015 parliamentary election, opposition parties failed to win a single seat - down from just one in the previous parliament. Opponents
accused the government of rigging the vote, a charge government officials dismissed. Protests in Oromiya province initially flared in 2014 over a development plan for the capital that would have expanded its boundaries, a move seen as threatening farmland. One of the development gaps between the Northern and Southern Bali is discussed in the talk show of Bali Post Media Group with the topic of suing the development gaps in North Bali and managing agro potential held in the Ketut Pudja Building at the ex-Buleleng harbor. He added that a number of factors are affecting the development gaps such as the appeal of natural resources and human resources of North Bali remaining inferior to that of South Bali. “Economically, people still prefer South of Bali as a place to invest,” he added. He considered that macro and regional policies of general public still place Southern Bali as a leading investment destination. The economic cycle, investment and lifestyle of people in Southern Bali causes Southern Bali to be more upto-date. “Actually the geographical, geological, geopolitical and economic aspect of North Bali has competitiveness that is not inferior to South Bali. Quite a lot of Buleleng people finally decide to look for job opportunities to Denpasar, Badung and surrounding areas. This condition makes some population of Buleleng look for their fortune in Denpasar,” he said. He explained the problem faced by the current society is that the potential of North Bali has not been worked on optimally and systematically. “So, in the future one of the agricultural sector that can be developed includes the agro-tourism and ecotourism integrated with the adequate supporting infrastructure mainly the access of regulation and marketing of their products,” he said. The data collected from the agency indicate that in 2016 with the funding from the Ministry of Agriculture the organic rice is developed in 40 hectares. A total of 20 hectares of paddy fields at Subak Kedu, Panji village, cultivating Ciherang variety has entered harvest period. The average production of organic rice reached 2.6 tons per hectare of land. Besides, the other 20 hectares of organic rice is developed at Subak Cengana, Sambangan village, Sukasada. It is still waiting for the harvest time with the same production target of 2.6 tons per hectare. Other than developing organic
rice at the two subak areas, the agency has made an agreement with a company in Banyuwangi that is ready to buy the organic rice production of Buleleng. Based on the agreement, the company will purchase the organic rice directly from farmers at IDR 25,000 per kilogram. This price will certainly give more profits when compared to the cultivation of nonorganic rice. The Head of the Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said in Singaraja on Friday (Sep. 30) that the development of organic rice is carried out due to market demand opportunities are
still widely open. In addition, paddy fields, especially at higher altitude in the subdistrict of Sukasada, Busungbiu, partly in Buleleng, Sawan, and Kubutambahan are suitable to cultivate organic rice. Paddy fields at this altitude mostly have stable irrigation condition and have not been contaminated by residue resulting from the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. “From our company inspection with farmers to Banyuwangi, we then develop 40 hectares of organic rice. The production will be purchased by the company, so that it is quite profitable for our farmers,” he said. According to Swatantra, farmers at the two subak (irrigation cooperative) areas totally grow organic rice. Maintenance of the plant totally uses organic fertilizers, while the pest and disease control uses phyto-pesticides. With this pattern, the first step of the productivity will be relatively small. But after successively developed, the productivity will increase up to 6
tons per hectare. For the next planting season, the agency has advised farmers to replace their rice varieties from Ciherang to local rice varieties of Bali. With these efforts, the quality of organic rice of Buleleng will increase and will skyrocket the selling price in the market. As for the development to other subak areas, Swatantra designed the paddy field in upstream area to be directed to organic rice. With this measure, residual use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides will be reduced from the upstream and the final target is paddy field at lowland area that will be increasingly less exposed to residues flowing through water sources. “Subak members have owned commitment to developing organic rice. In the next planting season, we will direct them to change the varieties. Thus, it will increase the quality and we are preparing to complete the certificate of the Buleleng organic rice,” he explained. (kmb38)

ASUNCION - Paraguay is a bilingual country where both Spanish and Guaraní (an aboriginal language) are spoken indistinctively and sometimes even mixed. Due to this bilingualism some of the dishes have names in Guaraní, some in Spanish, and some in a mixture of both languages. There is no major variation in the way dishes are prepared in the different regions of Paraguay. Just sometimes the preparation may vary in a couple of things (if it does) for example, instead of the Tatakua (which is a brick/adobe oven) a common kitchen oven is used. In Paraguay the Sopa Paraguaya, the Mandioca, the Chipá Guazú and the Chipá are present in almost every lunch or dinner at least twice a week (sometimes more and especially if it involves a social gathering). Yopara, a traditional dish made up of vegetables, beans, cheese and chicken which is served annually on October 1, is seen in pots during “Karai Octubre” celebrations in Asuncion, Paraguay, October 1, 2016. President Joko Widodo predicted that tourism will become largest foreign exchange producer. This was stated by Minister of Tourism, Dr. Arief Yahya, when attending the graduation day XXII of the Bali Tourism Institute (STPNB). “Keep in mind that I’d like to convey three things in order to realize it,” he said. Firstly, 100 percent of tourism institute graduates including the STPNB have been absorbed by the labor market. Secondly, 30 percent of the graduates have worked overseas and occupied a strategic position. “Many graduates from Bali have occupied the position as general manager such in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, while in Batam have been so many,” said Arief Yahya. Thirdly, 10 percent of graduates of higher education under the Ministry of Tourism should become self-employed. Currently there is an average of 5 to 7.7 percent of the graduates have been self-employed. He strongly supported the
higher education to have a program of international class. It will make the higher education under the Ministry of Tourism more superior than others. The measures taken to achieve it, added Arief Yahya, are by establishing synergy with the Agency of Creative Economy and he promised to help the graduates in Bali. “The point is that our children should be prepared to become entrepreneurs,” he said. Arief Yahya also wanted that tourism younger generation must be ready to compete and capable of beating the competitors such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. “If we want to make business, we must see the world, look at where you are, look at your enemies, get to know your enemy and know yourself, and then you can win,” he said. Previously, the branding of Wonderful Indonesia was ranked at the bottom because it was ugly. So, the number of tourist visit to Indonesia was far behind Malaysia and Thailand. “Moreover, we are defeated by a small country like Singapore. It does not make sense,” he said.
Thus, higher education and young people must be instilled into their hearts that this country is disappearing and must be raised. When starting college education, new students should be informed that the country is defeated by others like Malaysia. But starting from now on, Indonesia has begun to beat them one by one. Wayang wong of Ramayana is a puppet show whose storyline is taken from the Ramayana epic, while the parwa tells about the storyline of Mahabharata epic. Further, he explained that the dancers of wayang wong make bilingual conversations namely in Old Javanese and Balinese language in the show. Old Javanese language is spoken by the dancers playing the main characters, while Balinese language is spoken by dancers portraying as clown. “Clown has the most difficult role. Apart from having to make jokes, he must also serve as an interpreter,” he explained. According to this artist who is also the Secretary in the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, though wayang wong has existed since the days of Waturenggong administration, until now he recognized that this art still exists. It is evident from the persistence of wayang wong in temple ceremonies at several villages in Bangli. Moreover, he had confidence that wayang wong will remain to persist considering at several villages the property used in wayang wong performance like masks are sanctified and danced in the implementation of ceremony. “At Sulahan village, for instance, the wayang wong is still staged because the masks are sanctified by local residents,” he explained. Nevertheless, Dewa Bakti recognized that it is quite difficult to regenerate the wayang wong dancer in several villages. Habitually the current younger generation is rarely interested in learning this art because is it hard to learn the languages, namely the Old Javanese and Balinese language. “Thankfully younger generation at Sulahan village has quite high interest in becoming the successors of wayang wong dancers, so that wayang wong can remain to survive until these days,” he said. BOGOTA - Colombians look set to back a peace accord with Marxist rebels in a referendum on Sunday, the final hurdle to a deal ending 52 years of war that calls for FARC fighters to re-enter society and form a political party. The plebiscite asks for a simple “yes” or “no” on whether Colombians support the accord signed last week by President Juan Manuel Santos, who has staked his legacy on peace, and the rebel commander known as Timochenko. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), whose numbers dwindled to about 7,000 in recent years due to a U.S.backed military offensive, have agreed to turn in weapons and fight for power at the ballot box instead of with bullets. After four years of negotiations in Havana, the final agreement was applauded round the world. Recent polls show about two-thirds of voters are likely to ratify it. Influential former President Alvaro Uribe has led the “no” camp, arguing that rebels should pay for crimes in jail and never be given congressional seats. But most Colombians, including even some who see the accord as too soft on the FARC, seem convinced that an imperfect peace is better than more war. “Even one less death is enough of an

China economic fundamentals sound after WTO cuts trade forecast - ministry BEIJING - China’s economic fundamentals are sound and it remains a contributor to global growth, the Commerce Ministry said on Saturday, after the World Trade Organization (WTO) cut its forecast for global trade growth this year by more than a third. The WTO’s report on Tuesday reflected a slowdown in China and falling levels of imports into the United States. The WTO estimated global trade volume is set to grow by just 1.7 percent in 2016, a much lower forecast compared with April’s 2.8 percent. It marks the first time in 15
years that international commerce has grown more slowly than the world economy. In a statement responding to the WTO’s forecast, China’s Commerce Ministry said that since the global economic crisis the country had been a positive contributor to global growth and recovery in trade. “Generally speaking, the basis for the good development of Chinese economic growth has not changed,” it said. China’s growth target for this year is 6.5 to 7 percent. In the second quarter of this year, the world’s second-largest economy
grew 6.7 percent from a year ago, according to official data. While the ministry admitted to weakness in trade in processed goods due to falling international demand, it also pointed to bright spots like the rapid growth in commodities imports such as crude oil, copper and soybeans. The ministry raised a flag too about a rise in global trade protectionism, saying China was the “main victim” in this regard. “China is willing to work with the world to continue to uphold the free trade concept in global trade, further expand opening up
to the outside and keep making trade more convenient,” it said. JAKARTA - The Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Paul Grigson, who is also a coffee connoisseur, said the potential in unlimited for the Indonesian coffee agriculture and industry. In a press release from the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, received by Antara here on Friday, the ambassador said the Australians and Indonesians enjoy drinking coffee, often in cozy cafes. “As the third largest coffee producer and exporter in the world, Indonesia is a haven for coffee addicts,” he said. Jakarta succeeds in saving 66 kelurahans from flooding this year
JAKARTA - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said the capital city has succeeded in reducing cases of flooding this year. “Until August this year there were 700 cases of flooding in Jakarta. The number was smaller than 889 cases in the same period last year,” head of the executive unit of the regional BPBD Denny Wahyu Haryanto said here on Friday. Denny said 66 kelurahans (villages), earlier always beset by flooding, have been free from floods this year. “Last year the 66 kelurahans especially Petamburan and Kampung Pulo were still submerged under flood waters in rainy season. Now the people of that kelurahans have been saved from floods,” he said. Kampung Pulo and Petamburan were among the worst hit by floods every year, but this year they are saved from the disaster, he said. Deny attributed the success in coping flood disasters in some areas in Jakarta to normalization of water flows in the city rivers. Russian, Syrian missiles pound Aleppo, destroy hospital: rebels and aid workers
AMMAN - Russian warplanes and their Syrian government allies battered rebel-held areas in and around Aleppo on Saturday, and rebels and aid workers accused them of destroying one of the city’s main hospitals and killing at least two patients. M10, the city’s main trauma hospital, in eastern Aleppo, was struck as the United States and its allies urged Russia, which is trying to crush resistance to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to halt the bombing and reach a diplomatic resolution. Saturday’s air strikes focused on major supply lines into rebel-held areas of Aleppo - the Castello Road and Malah district and around the Handarat camp. Fighting also raged in the city in the Suleiman al Halabi neighborhood, the front line to the north of Aleppo’s Old City and in the residential Bustan al Basha quarter. Rebels and rescuers said at least
seven missiles were dropped on the hospital, more commonly known as Sakhour, by both Russian jets and Syrian helicopters. An American relief organization said two patients were killed and 13 injured in the attack, which was the second on the hospital in less than a week. “The hospital is now out of service completely. There’s destruction to walls, infrastructure, equipment and generators. There are no more guards or staff left. It’s complete darkness,” said Mohammad Abu Rajab, a radiologist in the hospital. Footage of the bombed hospital on social media showed extensive
damage. The attack drew immediate condemnation from France and Germany. LONDON - Prime Minister Theresa May will promise to make Britain “a sovereign and independent country” by repealing the act that took it into what is now the European Union next year, she told the Sunday Times newspaper. In an interview, May, appointed after Britain’s vote in June to leave the EU, said she would not wait for an election in Germany next September before triggering Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty to start formal divorce proceedings. The former interior minister has been under pressure from EU officials, investors and members of her ruling Conservative Party to offer more detail on her plan for Britain’s exit, beyond her catch phrase “Brexit means Brexit”. Speaking on the first day of her party’s annual conference on Sunday, May will hope to put some of the criticism to rest by pledging to overturn the 1972 European Communities Act, the law allowed the accession of Britain to the European Economic Community, which later became the European Union. “We will introduce, in the next Queen’s speech, a Great Repeal Bill that will remove the European Communities Act from the statute book,” she told the newspaper, which said it should take place in April or May. “This marks the first stage in the UK becoming a sovereign and inde-

WUHAN - Petra Kvitova raced to a 6-1 6-1 victory over Dominika Cibulkova in the Wuhan Open final on Saturday to capture her first title of the year with a ruthless display of power hitting. It was a second Wuhan title for the 14th-seeded Czech who will move up to 12th place in the race to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore after a campaign hampered by illness. The twice Wimbledon champion, who knocked out world number one Angelique Kerber in the last 16, took a stranglehold on the match from the start, losing one point in the first four games as she blazed through the first set. Cibulkova, who had won her previous two meetings against Kvitova, played four three-setters in five matches en route to the final and fatigue appeared to catch up with the 10th-seeded Slovak as she managed just two winners in the entire contest. “Wuhan, it’s really one of my favourite cities,” Kvitova said on the WTA website (www.wtatennis. com). “It was a great crowd all well, there were some incredible matches for me and I’m really happy that I can stand here as a champion again.” With the first set under her belt, Kvitova refused to take her foot of the gas as she struck 28 winners to coast to victory in a little more than an hour. Reuters was unable to immediately verify details of the report. Representatives of Briton Fury, who last week pulled out of a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko for medical reasons, declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. ESPN said it had obtained a copy of a letter sent by VADA president Dr. Margaret Goodman to representatives of Fury and Klitschko as well as the British Boxing Board of Control and the United States’ Association of Boxing Commissions on Thursday. “This letter is to advise you that the ‘A’ sample urine specimen number 4006253 collected from Tyson Fury on September 22, 2016 in Lancaster, England through his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) program has been analysed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, stimulants and drugs of abuse,” it read. “The results of the analysis are as follows: Adverse. Urine specimen contains benzoylecgonine. “Mr. Fury has the right to promptly request analysis of the ‘B’ sample at his expense.” Benzoylecgonine is the main metabolite of cocaine.

Russia to play friendly international in Chechnya
MOSCOW - Russia will play a friendly against Romania in Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic on Nov. 15, the Russian Football Union (RFU) announced. “Everything regarding the friendly match with Romania is all right, we will definitely be playing in Grozny,” RFU president Vitaly Mutko was quoted as saying by the R-Sport news agency. The match will take place at the Akhmat Arena, which has a
capacity of 30,000 and was opened in 2011. Russian Premier League side Terek Grozny play their home matches here. This will be the first time that Grozny, which is one of the biggest cities in the North Caucasus, will host a Russia national team match. VALENCIA — Valencia says former Italy manager Cesare Prandelli has agreed to become the new manager of the Spanish club. Valencia says Prandelli has signed a contract through June 2018. Caretaker coach Salvador “Voro” Gonzalez will be in charge of the team for Sunday’s Spanish league match against Atletico Madrid before Prandelli takes over. The 59-year-old Prandelli coached Italy from 2010-14, and guided the team to the final of the 2012 European Championship

Heavyweight world champion Fury tests positive for cocaine - ESPN LONDON - Heavyweight world boxing champion Tyson Fury has tested positive for cocaine, ESPN reported on Friday citing a leaked letter sent by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA). Reuters was unable to immediately verify details of the report. Representatives of Briton Fury, who last week pulled out of a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko for medical reasons, declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. ESPN said it had obtained a copy of a letter sent by VADA president Dr. Margaret Goodman to representatives of Fury and Klitschko as well as the British Boxing Board of Control and the United States’ Association of Boxing Commissions on Thursday. “This letter is to advise you that the ‘A’ sample urine specimen number 4006253 collected from Tyson Fury on September 22, 2016 in Lancaster, England through his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) program has been analysed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, stimulants and drugs of abuse,” it read. “The results of the analysis are as follows: Adverse. Urine specimen contains benzoylecgonine. “Mr. Fury has the right to promptly request analysis of the ‘B’ sample at his expense.” Benzoylecgonine is the main metabolite of cocaine.

Russian, Syrian missiles pound Aleppo, destroy hospital: rebels and aid workers
AMMAN - Russian warplanes and their Syrian government allies battered rebel-held areas in and around Aleppo on Saturday, and rebels and aid workers accused them of destroying one of the city’s main hospitals and killing at least two patients. M10, the city’s main trauma hospital, in eastern Aleppo, was struck as the United States and its allies urged Russia, which is trying to crush resistance to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to halt the bombing and reach a diplomatic resolution. Saturday’s air strikes focused on major supply lines into rebel-held areas of Aleppo - the Castello Road and Malah district and around the Handarat camp. Fighting also raged in the city in the Suleiman al Halabi neighborhood, the front line to the north of Aleppo’s Old City and in the residential Bustan al Basha quarter. Rebels and rescuers said at least
seven missiles were dropped on the hospital, more commonly known as Sakhour, by both Russian jets and Syrian helicopters. An American relief organization said two patients were killed and 13 injured in the attack, which was the second on the hospital in less than a week. “The hospital is now out of service completely. There’s destruction to walls, infrastructure, equipment and generators. There are no more guards or staff left. It’s complete darkness,” said Mohammad Abu Rajab, a radiologist in the hospital. Footage of the bombed hospital on social media showed extensive
damage. The attack drew immediate condemnation from France and Germany. LONDON - Prime Minister Theresa May will promise to make Britain “a sovereign and independent country” by repealing the act that took it into what is now the European Union next year, she told the Sunday Times newspaper. In an interview, May, appointed after Britain’s vote in June to leave the EU, said she would not wait for an election in Germany next September before triggering Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty to start formal divorce proceedings. The former interior minister has been under pressure from EU officials, investors and members of her ruling Conservative Party to offer more detail on her plan for Britain’s exit, beyond her catch phrase “Brexit means Brexit”. China economic fundamentals sound after WTO cuts trade forecast - ministry BEIJING - China’s economic fundamentals are sound and it remains a contributor to global growth, the Commerce Ministry said on Saturday, after the World Trade Organization (WTO) cut its forecast for global trade growth this year by more than a third. The WTO’s report on Tuesday reflected a slowdown in China and falling levels of imports into the United States. The WTO estimated global trade volume is set to grow by just 1.7 percent in 2016, a much lower forecast compared with April’s 2.8 percent. It marks the first time in 15
years that international commerce has grown more slowly than the world economy. In a statement responding to the WTO’s forecast, China’s Commerce Ministry said that since the global economic crisis the country had been a positive contributor to global growth and recovery in trade. “Generally speaking, the basis for the good development of Chinese economic growth has not changed,” it said. China’s growth target for this year is 6.5 to 7 percent. In the second quarter of this year, the world’s second-largest economy
grew 6.7 percent from a year ago, according to official data. While the ministry admitted to weakness in trade in processed goods due to falling international demand, it also pointed to bright spots like the rapid growth in commodities imports such as crude oil, copper and soybeans. The ministry raised a flag too about a rise in global trade protectionism, saying China was the “main victim” in this regard. “China is willing to work with the world to continue to uphold the free trade concept in global trade, further expand opening up

Jakarta succeeds in saving 66 kelurahans from flooding this year
JAKARTA - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said the capital city has succeeded in reducing cases of flooding this year. “Until August this year there were 700 cases of flooding in Jakarta. The number was smaller than 889 cases in the same period last year,” head of the executive unit of the regional BPBD Denny Wahyu Haryanto said here on Friday. Denny said 66 kelurahans (villages), earlier always beset by flooding, have been free from floods this year. “Last year the 66 kelurahans especially Petamburan and Kampung Pulo were still submerged under flood waters in rainy season. Now the people of that kelurahans have been saved from floods,” he said. Kampung Pulo and Petamburan were among the worst hit by floods every year, but this year they are saved from the disaster, he said. Further, he explained that the dancers of wayang wong make bilingual conversations namely in Old Javanese and Balinese language in the show. Old Javanese language is spoken by the dancers playing the main characters, while Balinese language is spoken by dancers portraying as clown. “Clown has the most difficult role. Apart from having to make jokes, he must also serve as an interpreter,” he explained. According to this artist who is also the Secretary in the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency, though wayang wong has existed since the days of Waturenggong administration, until now he recognized that this art still exists. It is evident from the persistence of wayang wong in temple ceremonies at several villages in Bangli. Moreover, he had confidence that wayang wong will remain to persist considering at several villages the property used in wayang wong performance like masks are sanctified and danced in the implementation of ceremony. “At Sulahan village, for instance, the wayang wong is still staged because the masks are sanctified by local residents,” he explained. Nevertheless, Dewa Bakti recognized that it is quite difficult to regenerate the wayang wong dancer in several villages. Habitually the current younger generation is rarely interested in learning this art because is it hard to learn the languages, namely the Old Javanese and Balinese language. “Thankfully younger generation at Sulahan village has quite high interest in becoming the successors of wayang wong dancers, so that wayang wong can remain to survive until these days,” he said. Colombians vote in referendum on peace deal, ‘yes’ win likely

BOGOTA - Colombians look set to back a peace accord with Marxist rebels in a referendum on Sunday, the final hurdle to a deal ending 52 years of war that calls for FARC fighters to re-enter society and form a political party. The plebiscite asks for a simple “yes” or “no” on whether Colombians support the accord signed last week by President Juan Manuel Santos, who has staked his legacy on peace, and the rebel commander known as Timochenko. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), whose numbers dwindled to about 7,000 in recent years due to a U.S.backed military offensive, have agreed to turn in weapons and fight for power at the ballot box instead of with bullets. After four years of negotiations in Havana, the final agreement was applauded round the world. Recent polls show about two-thirds of voters are likely to ratify it. Influential former President Alvaro Uribe has led the “no” camp, arguing that rebels should pay for crimes in jail and never be given congressional seats. But most Colombians, including even some who see the accord as too soft on the FARC, seem convinced that an imperfect peace is better than more war. “Even one less death is enough of an
argument,” said Sandra Guevara, a 42-yearold secretary. “I’m voting yes because I’m betting on hope, to guarantee my son can see a better country.” Under the accord the FARC, which began as a peasant revolt in 1964, can compete in the 2018 presidential and legislative elections and has 10 unelected congressional seats guaranteed through 2026. While the number of seats is not be enough to sway legislation, some are still outraged. “The president has given the guerrillas the ability to be in government. He’s sold out the country,” said 66-year-old Bogota housewife Fanny Castro, whose son-in-law is in the army. “We have to vote no or we’ll have the guerrillas on top of us.” For decades, the FARC bankrolled the longest-running conflict in the Americas through kidnapping and extortion, spreading a sense of terror that left few Colombians unaffected. The conflict claimed more than 220,000 lives and displaced millions of people. If the peace accord is approved on Sunday, Santos will likely turn his focus toward a much-needed tax reform and other measures to compensate for a drop in oil income, as well as possible talks with the smaller ELN rebel group. ASUNCION - Paraguay is a bilingual country where both Spanish and Guaraní (an aboriginal language) are spoken indistinctively and sometimes even mixed. Due to this bilingualism some of the dishes have names in Guaraní, some in Spanish, and some in a mixture of both languages. There is no major variation in the way dishes are prepared in the different regions of Paraguay. Just sometimes the preparation may vary in a couple of things (if it does) for example, instead of the Tatakua (which is a brick/adobe oven) a common kitchen oven is used. In Paraguay the Sopa Paraguaya, the Mandioca, the Chipá Guazú and the Chipá are present in almost every lunch or dinner at least twice a week (sometimes more and especially if it involves a social gathering). Yopara, a traditional dish made up of vegetables, beans, cheese and chicken which is served annually on October 1, is seen in pots during “Karai Octubre” celebrations in Asuncion, Paraguay, October 1, 2016. However, it must be preceded with the discovery of potential owned by the Sidan village to support the tourist attraction. This was conveyed by the Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. MANGUPURA - The government is intensively developing tourism areas in Indonesia and promoting the branding of Wonderful Indonesia overseas. President Joko Widodo predicted that tourism will become largest foreign exchange producer. This was stated by Minister of Tourism, Dr. Arief Yahya, when attending the graduation day XXII of the Bali Tourism Institute (STPNB). “Keep in mind that I’d like to convey three things in order to realize it,” he said. Firstly, 100 percent of tourism institute graduates including the STPNB have been absorbed by the labor market. Secondly, 30 percent of the graduates have worked overseas and occupied a strategic position. “Many graduates from Bali have occupied the position as general manager such in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, while in Batam have been so many,” said Arief Yahya. Thirdly, 10 percent of graduates of higher education under the Ministry of Tourism should become self-employed. Currently there is an average of 5 to 7.7 percent of the graduates have been self-employed. He strongly supported the
higher education to have a program of international class. It will make the higher education under the Ministry of Tourism more superior than others. The measures taken to achieve it, added Arief Yahya, are by establishing synergy with the Agency of Creative Economy and he promised to help the graduates in Bali. “The point is that our children should be prepared to become entrepreneurs,” he said. Arief Yahya also wanted that tourism younger generation must be ready to compete and capable of beating the competitors such as Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. “If we want to make business, we must see the world, look at where you are, look at your enemies, get to know your enemy and know yourself, and then you can win,” he said. Previously, the branding of Wonderful Indonesia was ranked at the bottom because it was ugly. So, the number of tourist visit to Indonesia was far behind Malaysia and Thailand. “Moreover, we are defeated by a small country like Singapore. It does not make sense,” he said.

The economic cycle, investment and lifestyle of people in Southern Bali causes Southern Bali to be more upto-date. “Actually the geographical, geological, geopolitical and economic aspect of North Bali has competitiveness that is not inferior to South Bali. Quite a lot of Buleleng people finally decide to look for job opportunities to Denpasar, Badung and surrounding areas. This condition makes some population of Buleleng look for their fortune in Denpasar,” he said. He explained the problem faced by the current society is that the potential of North Bali has not been worked on optimally and systematically. “So, in the future one of the agricultural sector that can be developed includes the agro-tourism and ecotourism integrated with the adequate supporting infrastructure mainly the access of regulation and marketing of their products,” he said. The data collected from the agency indicate that in 2016 with the funding from the Ministry of Agriculture the organic rice is developed in 40 hectares. A total of 20 hectares of paddy fields at Subak Kedu, Panji village, cultivating Ciherang variety has entered harvest period. The average production of organic rice reached 2.6 tons per hectare of land. Besides, the other 20 hectares of organic rice is developed at Subak Cengana, Sambangan village, Sukasada. It is still waiting for the harvest time with the same production target of 2.6 tons per hectare. Other than developing organic
rice at the two subak areas, the agency has made an agreement with a company in Banyuwangi that is ready to buy the organic rice production of Buleleng. Based on the agreement, the company will purchase the organic rice directly from farmers at IDR 25,000 per kilogram. This price will certainly give more profits when compared to the cultivation of nonorganic rice. The Head of the Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said in Singaraja on Friday (Sep. 30) that the development of organic rice is carried out due to market demand opportunities are
still widely open. In addition, paddy fields, especially at higher altitude in the subdistrict of Sukasada, Busungbiu, partly in Buleleng, Sawan, and Kubutambahan are suitable to cultivate organic rice. Paddy fields at this altitude mostly have stable irrigation condition and have not been contaminated by residue resulting from the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. “From our company inspection with farmers to Banyuwangi, we then develop 40 hectares of organic rice. The production will be purchased by the company, so that it is quite profitable for our farmers,” he said. According to Swatantra, farmers at the two subak (irrigation cooperative) areas totally grow organic rice. Maintenance of the plant totally uses organic fertilizers, while the pest and disease control uses phyto-pesticides. With this pattern, the first step of the productivity will be relatively small. But after successively developed, the productivity will increase up to 6
tons per hectare. For the next planting season, the agency has advised farmers to replace their rice varieties from Ciherang to local rice varieties of Bali. With these efforts, the quality of organic rice of Buleleng will increase and will skyrocket the selling price in the market. As for the development to other subak areas, Swatantra designed the paddy field in upstream area to be directed to organic rice. With this measure, residual use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides will be reduced from the upstream and the final target is paddy field at lowland area that will be increasingly less exposed to residues flowing through water sources. “Subak members have owned commitment to developing organic rice. In the next planting season, we will direct them to change the varieties. Thus, it will increase the quality and we are preparing to complete the certificate of the Buleleng organic rice,” he explained. (kmb38)

LOS ANGELES - Brad Pitt will undergo drug and alcohol tests as part of a temporary agreement with his estranged wife Angelina Jolie that will allow him to see their six children, two people familiar with the agreement said on Friday. The temporary agreement, which will run until Oct. 20, was the first breakthrough in the bitter split between the superstar couple since Jolie filed for divorce on Sept. 20. The actress cited “the health of the family” and sought full physical custody of the children. Pitt, 52, and Jolie, 41, both agreed to undergo individual counseling, and Pitt’s initial visit with the children will take place with a therapist, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. No ruling or decision has been made on who will eventually have legal or physical custody, they said. Representatives of Pitt and Jolie did not return calls for comment on Friday. Media reports say that since their separation on Sept. 15, Pitt has not seen the three biological and three adopted children he had with Jolie. Ethiopians killed in stampede after police fire warning shots during protest
ADDIS ABABA - Police in Ethiopia’s Oromiya region fired teargas and warning shots on Sunday to disperse anti-government protesters at a religious festival, triggering a stampede that the opposition party said killed at least 50 people. The government did not give a precise death toll resulting from chaotic scenes during the annual festival where some people chanted slogans against the government and waved a rebel group’s flag. But it said “lives were lost” and that several were injured. Sporadic protests have erupted in Oromiya in the last two years, initially sparked by a land row but increasingly turning more broadly against the government. Since late 2015, scores of protesters have been killed in clashes with police. These developments highlight tensions in the country where the govern-
ment has delivered stellar economic growth rates but faced criticism from opponents and rights group that it has trampled on political freedoms. Thousands of people had gathered for the annual Irreecha festival of thanksgiving in the town of Bishoftu, about 40 km (25 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa. Crowds chanted “we need freedom” and “we need justice”, preventing community elders, deemed close to the government, from delivering their speeches at the festival. Some protesters waved the red, green and yellow flag of the Oromo Liberation Front, a rebel group
branded a “terrorist” organisation by the government, witnesses said. When police fired teargas and guns into the air, crowds fled and created a stampede, some of them plunging into a deep ditch, witnesses said. The witnesses said they saw people dragging out a dozen or more victims, showing no obvious sign of life. Half a dozen people, also motionless, were also seen being taken by pick-up truck to a hospital, one witness said. “As a result of the chaos, lives were lost and several of the injured were taken to hospital,” the government communications office said in a statement, without giving figures. “Those responsible will face justice.” Merera Gudina, chairman of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, told Reuters at least 50 people
were killed, saying his group had been talking to families of the victims. He said the government tried to use the event to show Oromiya was calm. “But residents still protested,” he said. The government blames rebel groups and dissidents abroad for stirring up the protests and provoking violence. It dismisses charges that it clamps down on free speech or its opponents. Protesters had chanted slogans against Oromo People’s Democratic Organisation, one of the four regional parties that make up the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front, which has ruled the country for quarter of a century. In a 2015 parliamentary election, opposition parties failed to win a single seat - down from just one in the previous parliament. Opponents
accused the government of rigging the vote, a charge government officials dismissed. Protests in Oromiya province initially flared in 2014 over a development plan for the capital that would have expanded its boundaries, a move seen as threatening farmland.
