Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are officially parents! According to reports, the actress gave birth to a baby girl on Tuesday in Los Angeles. The increase in the price of local fruits lay in the range of IDR 2,000 per kg from the previous one. Meanwhile, the price of imported fruit even skyrocketed.

At the moment, the availability of mango was limited as still ahead of the harvest season. Meanwhile, the price of tangerine was in the range of IDR 12,000. A temple priest from Sibetan, Jero Mangku Krisna, said the price of coconut even jumped sharply. Formerly, the price of mature coconut was around IDR 4,000. Last Wednesday, a large size coconut for ritual donation was sold for IDR 7,000. Meanwhile, the smaller coconut for daksina oblation such as the ivory coconut was sold for IDR 5,000. A fruit seller at the Karangsokong wholesale market, Karangasem, Putu Widnyani, said the fruit price rose at
the average of IDR 2,000 per kg. For instance, bomb manalagi apple was sold from IDR 18,000 to IDR 20,000 per kg, manalagi apple of super quality from IDR 17,000 to IDR 19,000 per kg, Bali tangerine from IDR 10,000 to IDR 11,000 per kg, while the Kintamani tangerine from IDR 7,000 to IDR 12,000. In the meantime, the price hike of imported fruit was higher with the average of IDR 2,000 to IDR 3,000 per kg. Fuji apple rose from IDR 28,000 to IDR 30,000, green pear from IDR 38,000 to IDR 40,000, red pear from IDR 30,000 to IDR 32,000 and red grape from IDR 55,000 to IDR 60,000. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

For his spring/ summer 2015 show held inside the vast, domed Grand Palais, designer Karl Lagerfeld sent a cast of models waving placards and loudspeakers onto a life-sized Parisian street set -- complete with puddles, cracked tarmac and apartment facades bedecked with window boxes.

The Head of Bali Revenue Services, Wayan Suarjana, admitted that the number always increased each month. As of December 31, 2013, the existing number of motor vehicle reached 3,037,665 units. However, a total of 33,977 units had not been mapped out. “We’re still updating the data of the motor vehicle in 2014. Obviously, the number will increase,” he said. He also detailed the number of motor vehicles in each county or municipality. In Denpasar, it amounted to 1,260,286 units, Badung (381,122 units), Tabanan (305,838 units), Gianyar (314,527 units), Bangli (80,294 units), Klungkung (88,008 units), Karangasem (123,151 units), Buleleng (302,978 units) and Jembrana (147,484 units). Such number was dominated by motorcycle, reaching 2,586,715 units. Meanwhile, the other types like sedan reached 39,844 units, jeep (41,574 units), minibus (214,985 units), bus (6,533 units), pick-up (78,270 units) and truck (35,214 units). “A large number of vehicles operating in Bali, especially private cars and motorcycles, have caused very crowded traffic in Bali, even leading to congestion,” he explained. Not only that, Suarjana also explained about the number of vehicles paying tax in the Bali Revenue Services in 2009 to 2013. Until 2013, a total of 2,109,454 units of motor vehicles paid taxes. However, he added that those having not made the payment remained to pay it gradually so far. Meanwhile, Chairman of the
Bali Land Transportation Organization (Organda), Ketut Edy Dharma Putra, said the public transport in Bali had been increasingly excluded from the list of transport options alias downgraded since the proliferation of motor vehicles coming with the ease of credit facility. Moreover, people assessed that private vehicle posed an efficient and flexible means of transportation. According to him, the population of public transport would continue to decline because people preferred riding private vehicles to riding public transportation with unclear schedule of departure. A member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, also admitted that Bali flooded by motor vehicles was difficult to be free from any congestion problem. On that account, the government was expected to have a clear target to deal with the congestion problem started with the preparation of infrastructure like highways and adequate public transportation facilities. He said that Bali could imitate the transportation system in the tourism area such as Hong Kong, where with the dense population it was able to cope with traffic congestion because nearly 90 percent of vehicles in Hong Kong consisted of public transportation. German traveler loses bag at airport, thief arrested

DENPASAR - A German traveler with the initials SK, 58, lost his bag at the Ngurah Rai International Airport, Tuban, Badung, Saturday (Jul 26). On arriving at the domestic departure terminal, the victim put the bag at the X-ray checkpoint device. Fighting for the airport has raged for months as the insurgents have tried to dislodge the government forces using it to shell rebel positions in Donetsk, the largest rebelheld city. At least nine people were killed in the crossfire Wednesday in residential areas near the airport. Civilian and military casualties have continued to rise in eastern Ukraine despite a cease-fire Sept. 5 and a second agreement Sept. 20 that spelled out how to create a buffer zone. While that helped to enforce the cease-fire in areas where Ukrainians troops and rebels chose to retreat, non-stop fighting has continued at the airport and other strategic locations. While the Donetsk airport building has been gutted by shelling, its long runway would let the rebels handle heavy cargo planes carrying supplies, instead of relying solely
on truck convoys from Russia. While it was impossible to get close to the airport Wednesday because of the fighting, an AP reporter in Donetsk saw that artillery fire hitting the airport was coming from government-held positions outside the city — an indication that Kiev may no longer hold the airport. But Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council spokesman, Col. Andriy Lysenko, told journalists in Kiev the airport was still under the control of government troops who were “brilliantly carrying out their duty.” Rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko, however, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying the rebels now control 90 percent of the airport. “In two — or maximum three — days, the Donetsk airport will come under our control,” he said.

WASHINGTON - Lightly regulated “shadow banking” has grown to huge proportions in the global financial system and increasingly poses a risk to stability, especially in the United States, the IMF said Wednesday. More than $70 trillion in assets are handled by shadow banks around the world, Gaston Gelos, chief of the Global Financial Analysis Division at the IMF, told journalists in a briefing. “It’s quite large,” he said. “It’s very important to understand what’s going on there to be able to assess risks.” The sector includes lightly policed institutions like mutual funds, money market funds, wealth management funds in China, and finance companies in emerging economies, that take money from investors and lend it like banks. They have grown larger in the extremely low interest-rate environment of the past six years, as investors seek higher yields on their money and banks tighten up under tougher post-crisis regulation. But the International Monetary Fund says in a new report that the risks are high because shadow banking largely depends on short-term funding. In a scare, it says, the impact of panic withdrawals can snowball into the broader financial system and global economy with outsized impact. That was seen in the financial crisis in
2008, when US money market funds which were important lenders in Europe faced large redemptions, and with the near-collapse of companies like insurer AIG. Since the crisis the power of shadow banks has only grown, the IMF report notes. In the United States, shadow banks have nearly twice as much assets than banks, and in the eurozone their assets have reached 60 percent of the banks. In developing countries the figure is close to 60 percent. The sector has rocketed in China, where banks face interest rate controls, pushing savers to seek better returns on their money outside the banks. The IMF estimates shadow banking amounts to 35-50 percent of China’s gross domestic product, and said the sector “warrants close monitoring.” “Shadow banking tends to take off when strict banking regulations are in place, which leads to circumvention of regulations,” said Gelos. “It also grows when real interest rates and yield spreads are low and investors are searching for higher

NAPLES — European Central Bank head Mario Draghi is expected Thursday to underline the bank’s willingness to deploy more economic stimulus measures, a stance that could send the euro skidding even lower. And a drop in the currency — which helps eurozone exporters and could nudge up worryingly low inflation — might be the most effective stimulus to come out of the ECB’s monthly meeting. While the eurozone’s chief monetary authority is faced with weak economic indicators, particularly a record low inflation rate, it is unlikely to take any more drastic action on Thursday, having already cut interest rates and unveiled two stimulus programs since June. Rate cuts are practically impossible. The benchmark refinancing rate is already at a record low at just 0.05 percent, while the rate it pays on bank deposits is minus 0.2 percent. Draghi has admitted the bank is, practically speaking, zeroed out on rates.

And analysts say the ECB is unlikely to announce new stimulus measures as it is still rolling out two earlier programs unveiled in June and September. Those programs seek to help economic activity by boosting the availability of credit. One offers long-term cheap loans to banks, on condition they lend money on to companies. The second is a plan to buy bonds made up of bundles of loans to companies — called ABS — in hopes of boosting demand for such bank loans. Draghi is expected to give more detail on the second plan at a press conference Thursday. Perhaps more importantly, he is also likely to underline the bank’s willingness to do more if needed. That could include expanding the program of bond purchases to other kinds of assets, even government bonds. Large scale purchases of government bonds — called quantitative easing, or QE — is what the Federal Reserve did to help the U.S. economy. But experts are not sure it would be as useful in
the eurozone. Some say the ECB will avoid doing QE in coming months because it is complicated in an 18-country currency union. The mere possibility of QE, however, has helped drive down interest rates and the euro. Lower rates can drive down a country’s currency. Not only that, the Fed is now talking about when to raise rates, boosting the dollar from their end. The drop in the euro’s exchange rate — to around $1.26 from $1.39 in May — is coming as a relief to many. It makes it easier for exporters to sell goods abroad and it helps raise the rate of inflation, which is worryingly low at only an annual 0.3 percent. Analysts at Swiss bank UBS said the euro could drop further if Draghi can make it clear that the ECB is willing to do more “and keeps the broader QE threat alive.” Thursday’s meeting is being held in Naples, Italy, one of two meetings a year held away from the bank’s Frankfurt headquarters to underline its status as a pan-European institution.

Barra needed to reassure investors that GM has a strong plan going forward. The stock has dropped about 18 percent this year. It rose 1.7 percent in afternoon trading. GM recalled 2.6 million small cars worldwide earlier this year to fix faulty ignition switches that are now blamed for at least 23 deaths nationwide. Barra said suppliers have built all the replacement switches, but only about 1.2 million small cars have had the repairs so far. GM has admitted knowing about the problem for a decade, but only recalled the cars this year. The switches can cause the engine to stall, deactivating the air bags. Barra said GM still expects to pay out $400 million to $600 million to compensate ignition switch crash victims. The company has hired compensation expert Kenneth Feinberg to pay victims. He made his first offers last week. The plan Barra outlined Wednesday emphasizes growth in China. GM plans to invest $14 billion through 2018, including five new assembly plants to support estimated sales of about 5 million per year. Last year the company sold nearly 3.2 million vehicles in China, compared with 2.8 million in the U.S.

Balinese traditional musical art, genggong or jaw harp, being at the verge of extinction, ultimately re-emerged to entertain Balinese spectators through the show by the Yoh Bongsri Jaw Harp Troupe from Pengotan village, Bangli. The jaw harp musical instrument made from palm frond or bamboo grew around the 1950s. This kind of traditional music came back and tried to pamper the homesickness of traditional music lovers in the Bali Art Center. The presence of music having disappeared for decades was quite exciting and livening up the entertainment at the Bali Arts Festival recently taking the central theme Kertamasa. The jaw harp music sounded unique and interesting because it sounded like a squirrel tree frog. This musical instrument was played by blowing and pulling while exhaling that generated sound or the sound was controlled by throat. In the performance, the jaw harp troupe presented a number of musical compositions such as the Dauh Dangin, Ketog Siap (chicken lays eggs), Lasan Megat Toya (lizard crosses water), and the Jajar Pande presented by gong gede gamelan instrument and ended with the gamelan composition entitled Gilak Tabuh Gong Telu. Coordinator of the jaw harp performance was Bandem Astawa and the music was directed by Ketut Salin. The Balinese jaw harp music was presented by 18 gamelan players and 6 musicians from teenagers to elderly. Some of them were Ketut Salin, Nyoman Gegera, Wayan Semadi, Wayan Mana and the youngest jaw harp music player was Wayan Paya Widata, a second grade student of SMAN 1 Bangli high school majoring in Accounting and the oldest player was Nengah Sinter aged
80 years. The performance was accompanied by five flutists, a gong player, two drummers, a klenang player, a pengecek player and a pletuk player. For the performance, the troupe had made preparation for two months. The performance took place for 50 minutes and each song composition lasted for 10 minutes. One of the jaw harp players, I Ketut Salin, 51, from Yoh Bongsri hamlet, Pengotan village, Bangli, accompanied by his sister, Ni Made Ragi, after the staging said the jaw harp was a rare music having vanished. In the past, this kind of music first emerged in the 1950s commonly used to kill time. Meanwhile, in the 1970s this traditional music evolved but then disappeared and nothing was absolutely heard. According to Salin, the emergence of music began in his childhood at the age of 5 years where he was very interested when seeing his uncle to play the instrument. He then learned from the master, namely his father, so that he could play the instrument well. “To play this jaw harp, I first learned from my father,” he said. According to him, the jaw harp first appeared around 1950s but it was experiencing a vacuum because of the difficulty of studying the music instrument. “Within a month, I have been able to play a guitar, but to play the jaw harp is probably not enough for me a year,” he said. The Bangli Culture Agency came to him
and brought along with a sample of the jaw harp made by a master of an antique in Batuan, Gianyar. Uniquely, the instrument maker could not play it. Based on the example of the jaw harp, Salin then tried to play it. Next, it was taken to a blacksmith to make an adjustment. By using a knife, the jaw harp was slightly rubbed to generate more proper sound so the tone was not too high or too low. Salin said it was made from palm frond and bamboo. However, the bamboo instrument was rather difficult to play. Sometimes, this musical instrument was played by way of blowing, pulling and rotating, made closer in the mouth, and it generated sound. The sound could be generated by blowing and the breath was exhaled by discharging sound from the esophagus in order to get the desired sound and then drawn using a nylon rope. Tone adjustment highly depended on the thickness. A thicker blade would be more difficult to play. And the sound could only be heard from the distance of 10 meters. Musical rhythm of the jaw harp had dang, ding dong. “It has principal tone and sangsing for gamelan function,” he said. Sometimes, playing this jaw harp instrument could quickly cause soreness in the hand due to tightly held in order to make a sound. As a result, people could rarely play the instrument as the difficulty of playing it. Due to its scarcity, the number of jaw harp player today could be counted on fingers (7 people). By and large, the jaw harp musical instrument was just play to kill time and gathered together with family. It was the first show played in the implementation of the BAF. “Hopefully, this music can continue to exist and remain sustainable,” he said. (wan)

It is called jaja gadang tain temuati because it is green (gadang) and has the shape of small round worm excrement (tain temuati). This very tender and sweet cake exudes a very typical flavor. Moreover, it is very safe to consume because the ingredients and coloring agent are made of organic substance. The main ingredient is rice flour mixed with green leaf extract produced by daun suji or dracaena leaf. It is used to make the cake look greenish as well as engender a delicious flavor, and fragrance. To serve the cake, it is put onto a small dish and then sprinkled with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. On days of yore, the cake was presented with a tekor (dish-shaped banana leaf). This cake is usually served when people held grandiose religious ceremonies (engaging villagers). But now, the traditional cake is very rare. Aside from being difficult and complicated preparation, the ingredient in use is also of selected rice processed manually. Preparations: first of all, the selected rice is soaked with clean water for about 6 hours. After that, the rice is made into flour by means of crushing. The flour is then clenched into the shape of balls. Then, steam all the batters until cooked or for 15 minutes. Take out the cooked flour and then mixed with the extract of dracaena leaf and give a small amount of starch to make it sticky. Unlike in the past, to make the batter sticky people usually used cassava. Later on, the flour batter is crushed and kneaded until refined. Subsequently, the batter is formed by using coconut shell mold having many small holes. This mold is put on the flour and then driven while rolling it. JAKARTA - About 2,000 workers at a US-owned copper and gold mine in eastern Indonesia staged a protest Wednesday after a deadly accident at the weekend, blockading the entrance and paralysing most operations. Four workers were killed Saturday when a giant haulage truck flattened a car at Freeport-McMoRan’s Grasberg mine high in the mountains of remote Papua province. The protest started in the early hours, and a workers’ union said it was due to concern about the increasing number of fatal accidents at the mine. Workers in helmets and orange vests used a blue tarpaulin tent to block the only access road to Grasberg’s open-pit and underground mines, crippling most mining operations, a protester and union official told AFP. “We demand the management take responsibility,” said protester Julius Mairuhu, adding that senior staff were not being held accountable for the accidents.
The firm said talks with the protesters were ongoing. “(The company) expects the action to be resolved shortly,” said Daisy Primayanti, a spokeswoman for Freeport’s Indonesian unit. The company says it has invested huge amounts in Papua and improved the livelihoods of many.

MANCHESTER, England — Park Ji-sung will return to the Old Trafford pitch on Sunday to mark the start of his new role as a Manchester United ambassador. The trailblazing South Korean midfielder won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup and three League Cups between 2005 and 2012 at United. The 33-year-old Park, who retired in May, will appear alongside former manager Alex Ferguson on the pitch ahead of Sunday’s match against Everton. “I have fond memories of my time at Manchester United and I am delighted and honored to have become an ambassador for the club,” Park said in a statement. “Some of the best moments of my life and career were
spent here and I will never forget the great support I had from the club and the fans. I am looking forward to once again representing United and sharing some of these memories with our global fan base.” With United amassing sponsors globally, Park will be key to satisfying their demands for promotional events. As well as sponsorship events, United says he will carry out community and coaching work. United managing director Richard Arnold says Park’s return “demonstrates the club’s ability to not only attract some of the best talent in the world, but retain it even after the players have retired.” Park briefly played for Queens Park Rangers after leaving United before finishing his career at PSV Eindhoven, the Dutch team that brought him to Europe in 2003.

MANCHESTER, England — Park Ji-sung will return to the Old Trafford pitch on Sunday to mark the start of his new role as a Manchester United ambassador. The trailblazing South Korean midfielder won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup and three League Cups between 2005 and 2012 at United. The 33-year-old Park, who retired in May, will appear alongside former manager Alex Ferguson on the pitch ahead of Sunday’s match against Everton. “I have fond memories of my time at Manchester United and I am delighted and honored to have become an ambassador for the club,” Park said in a statement. “Some of the best moments of my life and career were
spent here and I will never forget the great support I had from the club and the fans. I am looking forward to once again representing United and sharing some of these memories with our global fan base.” With United amassing sponsors globally, Park will be key to satisfying their demands for promotional events. As well as sponsorship events, United says he will carry out community and coaching work. JAKARTA - Indonesia has detained three traders for attempting to illegally sell manta rays, the first such arrests since the world’s biggest archipelago introduced legislation protecting the huge winged fish, conservationists said. In February, the biggest manta ray sanctuary on Earth was established in Indonesia in a bid to put a stop to the creatures being hunted for use in traditional medicine, and attract more tourists. Manta rays are now protected within the millions of square kilometres of ocean surrounding Southeast Asia’s biggest nation, with fishing and export of the creatures banned. US-based group the Wildlife Conservation Society, which operates a wildlife crimes unit in Indonesia, said that three manta ray traders were arrested in August and September on the main island of Java. The arrests send a “clear message that Indonesia is serious about protecting its natural heritage against illegal wildlife traders,” Joe Walston, the society’s vice president for field conservation said in a statement released this week. The rays have wingspans up to 25 feet (7.5 metres), which they flap to propel themselves through the water, and are a favourite sight for foreign tourists, many of whom come to Indonesia to dive. Protection group the International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies both species of manta ray -- the oceanic and reef varieties -- as vulnerable.

JAKARTA - About 2,000 workers at a US-owned copper and gold mine in eastern Indonesia staged a protest Wednesday after a deadly accident at the weekend, blockading the entrance and paralysing most operations. Four workers were killed Saturday when a giant haulage truck flattened a car at Freeport-McMoRan’s Grasberg mine high in the mountains of remote Papua province. The protest started in the early hours, and a workers’ union said it was due to concern about the increasing number of fatal accidents at the mine. Workers in helmets and orange vests used a blue tarpaulin tent to block the only access road to Grasberg’s open-pit and underground mines, crippling most mining operations, a protester and union official told AFP. “We demand the management take responsibility,” said protester Julius Mairuhu, adding that senior staff were not being held accountable for the accidents.
The firm said talks with the protesters were ongoing. “(The company) expects the action to be resolved shortly,” said Daisy Primayanti, a spokeswoman for Freeport’s Indonesian unit. In May last year, a training tunnel collapsed killing 28 miners as they took part in a safety course in one of Indonesia’s worst-ever mining accidents. Another worker died in December last year when rocks fell from a machine, crushing him. In 2011 a three-month strike crippled production at the mine, and workers only halted the industrial action once Freeport agreed to a huge pay rise. Freeport has been a controversial presence in Indonesia for decades, and stands accused of extracting huge wealth from poverty-wracked areas while failing to give enough back, as well as environmental destruction. The company says it has invested huge amounts in Papua and improved the livelihoods of many.

WASHINGTON - Lightly regulated “shadow banking” has grown to huge proportions in the global financial system and increasingly poses a risk to stability, especially in the United States, the IMF said Wednesday. More than $70 trillion in assets are handled by shadow banks around the world, Gaston Gelos, chief of the Global Financial Analysis Division at the IMF, told journalists in a briefing. “It’s quite large,” he said. “It’s very important to understand what’s going on there to be able to assess risks.” The sector includes lightly policed institutions like mutual funds, money market funds, wealth management funds in China, and finance companies in emerging economies, that take money from investors and lend it like banks. They have grown larger in the extremely low interest-rate environment of the past six years, as investors seek higher yields on their money and banks tighten up under tougher post-crisis regulation. But the International Monetary Fund says in a new report that the risks are high because shadow banking largely depends on short-term funding. In a scare, it says, the impact of panic withdrawals can snowball into the broader financial system and global economy with outsized impact. That was seen in the financial crisis in
2008, when US money market funds which were important lenders in Europe faced large redemptions, and with the near-collapse of companies like insurer AIG. Since the crisis the power of shadow banks has only grown, the IMF report notes. In the United States, shadow banks have nearly twice as much assets than banks, and in the eurozone their assets have reached 60 percent of the banks. In developing countries the figure is close to 60 percent. The sector has rocketed in China, where banks face interest rate controls, pushing savers to seek better returns on their money outside the banks. The IMF estimates shadow banking amounts to 35-50 percent of China’s gross domestic product, and said the sector “warrants close monitoring.” “Shadow banking tends to take off when strict banking regulations are in place, which leads to circumvention of regulations,” said Gelos. “It also grows when real interest rates and yield spreads are low and investors are searching for higher

NAPLES — European Central Bank head Mario Draghi is expected Thursday to underline the bank’s willingness to deploy more economic stimulus measures, a stance that could send the euro skidding even lower. And a drop in the currency — which helps eurozone exporters and could nudge up worryingly low inflation — might be the most effective stimulus to come out of the ECB’s monthly meeting. While the eurozone’s chief monetary authority is faced with weak economic indicators, particularly a record low inflation rate, it is unlikely to take any more drastic action on Thursday, having already cut interest rates and unveiled two stimulus programs since June. Rate cuts are practically impossible. The benchmark refinancing rate is already at a record low at just 0.05 percent, while the rate it pays on bank deposits is minus 0.2 percent. Draghi has admitted the bank is, practically speaking, zeroed out on rates.

And analysts say the ECB is unlikely to announce new stimulus measures as it is still rolling out two earlier programs unveiled in June and September. Those programs seek to help economic activity by boosting the availability of credit. One offers long-term cheap loans to banks, on condition they lend money on to companies. The second is a plan to buy bonds made up of bundles of loans to companies — called ABS — in hopes of boosting demand for such bank loans. Draghi is expected to give more detail on the second plan at a press conference Thursday. Perhaps more importantly, he is also likely to underline the bank’s willingness to do more if needed. That could include expanding the program of bond purchases to other kinds of assets, even government bonds. Large scale purchases of government bonds — called quantitative easing, or QE — is what the Federal Reserve did to help the U.S. economy. But experts are not sure it would be as useful in
the eurozone. Some say the ECB will avoid doing QE in coming months because it is complicated in an 18-country currency union. The mere possibility of QE, however, has helped drive down interest rates and the euro. Lower rates can drive down a country’s currency. Not only that, the Fed is now talking about when to raise rates, boosting the dollar from their end. The drop in the euro’s exchange rate — to around $1.26 from $1.39 in May — is coming as a relief to many. It makes it easier for exporters to sell goods abroad and it helps raise the rate of inflation, which is worryingly low at only an annual 0.3 percent. Analysts at Swiss bank UBS said the euro could drop further if Draghi can make it clear that the ECB is willing to do more “and keeps the broader QE threat alive.” Thursday’s meeting is being held in Naples, Italy, one of two meetings a year held away from the bank’s Frankfurt headquarters to underline its status as a pan-European institution.

Barra needed to reassure investors that GM has a strong plan going forward. The stock has dropped about 18 percent this year. It rose 1.7 percent in afternoon trading. GM recalled 2.6 million small cars worldwide earlier this year to fix faulty ignition switches that are now blamed for at least 23 deaths nationwide. Barra said suppliers have built all the replacement switches, but only about 1.2 million small cars have had the repairs so far. GM has admitted knowing about the problem for a decade, but only recalled the cars this year. The switches can cause the engine to stall, deactivating the air bags. Barra said GM still expects to pay out $400 million to $600 million to compensate ignition switch crash victims. The company has hired compensation expert Kenneth Feinberg to pay victims. He made his first offers last week. The plan Barra outlined Wednesday emphasizes growth in China. GM plans to invest $14 billion through 2018, including five new assembly plants to support estimated sales of about 5 million per year. Last year the company sold nearly 3.2 million vehicles in China, compared with 2.8 million in the U.S.

The jaw harp musical instrument made from palm frond or bamboo grew around the 1950s. This kind of traditional music came back and tried to pamper the homesickness of traditional music lovers in the Bali Art Center. The presence of music having disappeared for decades was quite exciting and livening up the entertainment at the Bali Arts Festival recently taking the central theme Kertamasa. The jaw harp music sounded unique and interesting because it sounded like a squirrel tree frog. This musical instrument was played by blowing and pulling while exhaling that generated sound or the sound was controlled by throat. In the performance, the jaw harp troupe presented a number of musical compositions such as the Dauh Dangin, Ketog Siap (chicken lays eggs), Lasan Megat Toya (lizard crosses water), and the Jajar Pande presented by gong gede gamelan instrument and ended with the gamelan composition entitled Gilak Tabuh Gong Telu. Coordinator of the jaw harp performance was Bandem Astawa and the music was directed by Ketut Salin. The Balinese jaw harp music was presented by 18 gamelan players and 6 musicians from teenagers to elderly. Some of them were Ketut Salin, Nyoman Gegera, Wayan Semadi, Wayan Mana and the youngest jaw harp music player was Wayan Paya Widata, a second grade student of SMAN 1 Bangli high school majoring in Accounting and the oldest player was Nengah Sinter aged
80 years. The performance was accompanied by five flutists, a gong player, two drummers, a klenang player, a pengecek player and a pletuk player. For the performance, the troupe had made preparation for two months. The performance took place for 50 minutes and each song composition lasted for 10 minutes. One of the jaw harp players, I Ketut Salin, 51, from Yoh Bongsri hamlet, Pengotan village, Bangli, accompanied by his sister, Ni Made Ragi, after the staging said the jaw harp was a rare music having vanished. In the past, this kind of music first emerged in the 1950s commonly used to kill time. Meanwhile, in the 1970s this traditional music evolved but then disappeared and nothing was absolutely heard. According to Salin, the emergence of music began in his childhood at the age of 5 years where he was very interested when seeing his uncle to play the instrument. He then learned from the master, namely his father, so that he could play the instrument well. “To play this jaw harp, I first learned from my father,” he said. According to him, the jaw harp first appeared around 1950s but it was experiencing a vacuum because of the difficulty of studying the music instrument. “Within a month, I have been able to play a guitar, but to play the jaw harp is probably not enough for me a year,” he said. and brought along with a sample of the jaw harp made by a master of an antique in Batuan, Gianyar. Uniquely, the instrument maker could not play it. Based on the example of the jaw harp, Salin then tried to play it. Next, it was taken to a blacksmith to make an adjustment. By using a knife, the jaw harp was slightly rubbed to generate more proper sound so the tone was not too high or too low. Salin said it was made from palm frond and bamboo. However, the bamboo instrument was rather difficult to play. Sometimes, this musical instrument was played by way of blowing, pulling and rotating, made closer in the mouth, and it generated sound. The sound could be generated by blowing and the breath was exhaled by discharging sound from the esophagus in order to get the desired sound and then drawn using a nylon rope. Tone adjustment highly depended on the thickness. A thicker blade would be more difficult to play. And the sound could only be heard from the distance of 10 meters. Musical rhythm of the jaw harp had dang, ding dong. “It has principal tone and sangsing for gamelan function,” he said. Sometimes, playing this jaw harp instrument could quickly cause soreness in the hand due to tightly held in order to make a sound. As a result, people could rarely play the instrument as the difficulty of playing it. Due to its scarcity, the number of jaw harp player today could be counted on fingers (7 people). By and large, the jaw harp musical instrument was just play to kill time and gathered together with family. It was the first show played in the implementation of the BAF. “Hopefully, this music can continue to exist and remain sustainable,” he said. (wan)
Jaja gadang tain temuati is one of the traditional cakes of community in Bali. It is called jaja gadang tain temuati because it is green (gadang) and has the shape of small round worm excrement (tain temuati). This very tender and sweet cake exudes a very typical flavor. Moreover, it is very safe to consume because the ingredients and coloring agent are made of organic substance. The main ingredient is rice flour mixed with green leaf extract produced by daun suji or dracaena leaf. It is used to make the cake look greenish as well as engender a delicious flavor, and fragrance. To serve the cake, it is put onto a small dish and then sprinkled with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. On days of yore, the cake was presented with a tekor (dish-shaped banana leaf). This cake is usually served when people held grandiose religious ceremonies (engaging villagers). But now, the traditional cake is very rare. Aside from being difficult and complicated preparation, the ingredient in use is also of selected rice processed manually. Preparations: first of all, the selected rice is soaked with clean water for about 6 hours. After that, the rice is made into flour by means of crushing. The flour is then clenched into the shape of balls. Then, steam all the batters until cooked or for 15 minutes. Take out the cooked flour and then mixed with the extract of dracaena leaf and give a small amount of starch to make it sticky. Unlike in the past, to make the batter sticky people usually used cassava. Later on, the flour batter is crushed and kneaded until refined. Subsequently, the batter is formed by using coconut shell mold having many small holes. This mold is put on the flour and then driven while rolling it. From the holes of coconut shell mold will come out a cake resembling the earth worm excrement. Afterward, the cake is placed on a banana leaf and then steamed again for about 15 minutes. When having cooked, the cake is taken out and cooled. For the presentation, the cake should be removed from the banana leaves one by one. Then, put them on the plate and sprinkle with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. To sprinkle the sugar, use banana leaf whose end has been torn up resembling a brush. Having sprinkled it evenly, the cake is ready to serve.

German traveler loses bag at airport, thief arrested

DENPASAR - A German traveler with the initials SK, 58, lost his bag at the Ngurah Rai International Airport, Tuban, Badung, Saturday (Jul 26). On arriving at the domestic departure terminal, the victim put the bag at the X-ray checkpoint device. Fighting for the airport has raged for months as the insurgents have tried to dislodge the government forces using it to shell rebel positions in Donetsk, the largest rebelheld city. At least nine people were killed in the crossfire Wednesday in residential areas near the airport. Civilian and military casualties have continued to rise in eastern Ukraine despite a cease-fire Sept. 5 and a second agreement Sept. 20 that spelled out how to create a buffer zone. While that helped to enforce the cease-fire in areas where Ukrainians troops and rebels chose to retreat, non-stop fighting has continued at the airport and other strategic locations. While the Donetsk airport building has been gutted by shelling, its long runway would let the rebels handle heavy cargo planes carrying supplies, instead of relying solely
on truck convoys from Russia. While it was impossible to get close to the airport Wednesday because of the fighting, an AP reporter in Donetsk saw that artillery fire hitting the airport was coming from government-held positions outside the city — an indication that Kiev may no longer hold the airport. But Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council spokesman, Col. Andriy Lysenko, told journalists in Kiev the airport was still under the control of government troops who were “brilliantly carrying out their duty.” Rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko, however, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying the rebels now control 90 percent of the airport. “In two — or maximum three — days, the Donetsk airport will come under our control,” he said.

Earlier, students, many of them from Hong Kong, handed out more than 1,000 fliers and hundreds of yellow ribbons at the University of California, Berkeley. In San Francisco’s Chinatown, scores of people demonstrated with signs, bearing such messages as “you are not alone” and “united for democracy,” and umbrellas, which have become symbols of the civil disobedience movement in Hong Kong, where protesters have used umbrellas to deflect police pepper spray. “We feel like many Americans don’t really know what’s happening in Hong Kong,” said June Lai, 20, a student organizer of the Berkeley demonstration. “They

The Head of Bali Revenue Services, Wayan Suarjana, admitted that the number always increased each month. As of December 31, 2013, the existing number of motor vehicle reached 3,037,665 units. However, a total of 33,977 units had not been mapped out. “We’re still updating the data of the motor vehicle in 2014. Obviously, the number will increase,” he said. He also detailed the number of motor vehicles in each county or municipality. In Denpasar, it amounted to 1,260,286 units, Badung (381,122 units), Tabanan (305,838 units), Gianyar (314,527 units), Bangli (80,294 units), Klungkung (88,008 units), Karangasem (123,151 units), Buleleng (302,978 units) and Jembrana (147,484 units). Such number was dominated by motorcycle, reaching 2,586,715 units. Meanwhile, the other types like sedan reached 39,844 units, jeep (41,574 units), minibus (214,985 units), bus (6,533 units), pick-up (78,270 units) and truck (35,214 units). “A large number of vehicles operating in Bali, especially private cars and motorcycles, have caused very crowded traffic in Bali, even leading to congestion,” he explained. Not only that, Suarjana also explained about the number of vehicles paying tax in the Bali Revenue Services in 2009 to 2013. Until 2013, a total of 2,109,454 units of motor vehicles paid taxes. According to him, the population of public transport would continue to decline because people preferred riding private vehicles to riding public transportation with unclear schedule of departure. A member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, also admitted that Bali flooded by motor vehicles was difficult to be free from any congestion problem. On that account, the government was expected to have a clear target to deal with the congestion problem started with the preparation of infrastructure like highways and adequate public transportation facilities. A temple priest from Sibetan, Jero Mangku Krisna, said the price of coconut even jumped sharply. Formerly, the price of mature coconut was around IDR 4,000. Last Wednesday, a large size coconut for ritual donation was sold for IDR 7,000. Meanwhile, the smaller coconut for daksina oblation such as the ivory coconut was sold for IDR 5,000. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Such expectation was revealed in the coaching and counseling on the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) in the meeting room of Gianyar Regent. Nowadays,
there had been 51 tourism awareness groups in Gianyar County. The Head of Gianyar Government Tourism Office, Anak Agung Ari Brahmanta, said that
Gianyar County still had many hidden potentials. Various factors could draw travelers to visit Gianyar, including the natural atmosphere, Balinese typical architecture (temple, palace and village), strength of community to preserve Hinduism, customs, culture, social relations as well as the art center. Considering such great potentials, the role of tourism awareness group at each village was required to develop the customary culture-based
tourism. “Many benefits will be gained in the tourism village. Among others, it will increase people’s income, rural infrastructure, housing quality, human resources, community insights as well as the decline of urbanization,” he said. By exploring the potential of villages existing around Ubud, it would enable to evenly distribute the number of travelers visiting Gianyar. Some business
units that could be developed by the tourism awareness group related to the village potentials including the accommodation (cottage/boutique hotel), food & beverage (restaurant, cafe), attractions (village life, natural environment), tour guide (local, foreign), souvenir (unique, local specialties), dance class (clothing, documentation), cooking class (recipe, ingredient), painting class as well as the batik and handicraft class.
