Rugged, forested terrain and bad weather had prevented rescuers from reaching the crash site by foot, and the wreckage was spotted from a helicopter Friday in the Leuser mountains at an altitude of 5,000 feet (1,524 meters). Early Saturday, 13 rescuers were lowered by helicopter by rope to the crash site, following two
others who had reached the site just before darkness fell Friday. “They found the bodies in their seats with their seat belts on,� Sunarbowo Sandi, head of the local search-and-rescue team, told The Associated Press from his monitoring post in a village near the crash site in the Bahorok region, about 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) northwest of the capital, Jakarta. The bodies included all 14 passengers and four crew members. Four of the dead were children. Hopes had been raised that there may be survivors after the aircraft was
spotted intact with one of its doors open, and rescuers dropped food and medicine down to the crash site. The victims’ relatives, who had been waiting for information, broke down in tears when they learned that their loved ones were found dead. Many of them accused the airline — PT Nusantara Buana Air — of taking far too long to give them information. “The rescue operation was too slow and unprofessional,â€? Rosmawati Harahap, who lost her son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren in the crash, said while sobbing. But rescuers insisted that tornado-like winds and heavy fog hampered their efforts to reach the crash site. “The conditions were really bad,â€? said Sandi, the search-andrescue ofďŹ cial, adding that rescu-
ers were further hampered by the mountainous terrain and impenetrable forests. Robur Rizallianto, a safety manager with the airline, said “all efforts� were made to try to save the passengers. The aircraft, made in Indonesia in 1989, was last inspected Sept. 22, according to Rizallianto. It was in good condition, and a check ahead of takeoff Thursday also came up clean, he said. Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million people, has been plagued by transportation accidents in recent years, from plane and train crashes to ferry sinkings. Drought in Tabanan is getting more apprehensive. Not only farmer, the water crisis itself also engulfs the people at two hamlets of Bangli Village, Baturiti. Since three months ago, they have undergone clean water crisis. As a result, they have to buy water for their daily needs. For indigent residents, they are forced to take water as far as one kilometer. Both hamlets in the most apprehensive condition are the Munduk Andong Tengah and Munduk Andong Atas. During this time, residents at both hamlets only rely on the supply of rainwater. When it never rains, they continue to get confused. “Our water supply in the reservoir has bogged down for over three months as the rain never comes,� sighed Wayan Nuarta, 27, a resident of Munduk Andong Tengah, Friday (Sep 30). Approximately in 1999, the local residents had set up a pump to drain the water into their homes. However, since it was required high cost of electric bills, the facility eventually turned dormant. “Many people could not afford to pay the electric bill. Since having no other activities, we are forced to continue this work,â€? said Dewa Oka while adding the salt making had been carried out for generations by his parents. Today, with his wife, Dewa Oka cultivated the salt-making area of
seven ares yielding some 15-20 food containers of salt in good weather as today. Similar destiny was also experienced by another farmer, Ketut Kaping, 50. According to him, the salt product of Kusamba actually had quality. However, it was often wedged by salt product from the Java Island though its quality was much lower. “However, the price is 50 percent cheaper. For instance, the price of rubber for the making of ladle, a tool used to convey sea water to salt production hut, was IDR 30,000 per piece and so was the drying equipment. Earlier, Deputy Chairman of Klungkung House, A.A. Sarjana, requested the Klungkung Regency to intervene for resolving the issues of salt farmers. Anyhow, the traditional salt-making had to be preserved. According to Agung Anom, government should provide assistance to farmers for the procurement of equipment. Khan is “the uncle of Siraj and Badruddin Haqqani ... one of the highest ranking members of the Haqqani network and a revered elder of the Haqqani clan,� the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement. Siraj, or Sirajuddin, Haqqani and his brother, Badruddin, are sons of veteran Afghan militant commander Jalaluddin Haqqani. NATO said Khan had managed bases and operations in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, and moved forces across the border for attacks,
as well as transferring funds and sourcing supplies. The force called him “the senior Haqqani commander in Afghanistan.â€? Khan was captured on Tuesday in Jani Khel district of Paktia province along with his deputy and bodyguard, in an operation by Afghan and foreign forces, NATO said. Attackers used explosives and gunďŹ re to target a military patrol near a wedding in violence-torn northeastern Nigeria, with residents reporting two civilians killed in the violence. The incident on Saturday, Nigeria’s independence day, occurred in Maiduguri, hit by scores of attacks blamed on an Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which also claimed an August bombing of UN headquarters in the capital Abuja.
“There was a bomb and gun attack on one of our patrol teams yesterday,â€? said Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Mohammed, spokesman for a military task force deployed to Maiduguri. “Our men responded to the attack but details are still sketchy.â€? Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BANGKOK — The Twitter account of Thailand’s new prime minister has been hacked by someone posting criticism of her policies. Government spokeswoman Thitima Chaisaeng says Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s account was hacked into Sunday morning. The Information and Communication Ministry is looking into who was responsible. At least eight messages were posted accusing Yingluck’s government of incompetence and cronyism. Yingluck’s Pheu Thai Party won a landslide election victory in July, but critics charge she is just a puppet of her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. JAKARTA — The chanting crowd at the radical Muslim protest in Indonesia stood out for its normalcy: smartly dressed businessmen, engineers, lawyers, smiling mothers, scampering children. At a time when al-Qaida seems to be faltering, the recruitment of such an educated, somewhat mainstream following is raising fears that Hizbut Tahrir, an enigmatic global movement, could prove more effective at radicalizing the Islamic world than outright terrorist groups. Active in 45 countries, Hizbut is now expanding in Asia, spreading its radical message from Indonesia to China. It wants to unite all Muslim countries in a globe-spanning bloc ruled by strict sharia law. It targets university students and professionals, working within countries to try to persuade people to overthrow their governments. The movement’s appeal to an often influential part of society worries experts. Its goal of an Islamic state may be far-fetched, but it could still undercut efforts to control extremism and develop democracy in countries such as Indonesia, which the U.S. hopes will be a vital regional partner and a global model for moderate Islam. “Our grand plan over the next five to 10 years is to reinforce the people’s lack of trust and hope in the regime,” said Rochmat Labib, the group’s Indonesia chairman in a rare interview with a Western reporter. “That’s what we are doing now: converting people from democracy, secularism and capitalism to Islamic ideology.”
Hizbut Tahrir, which means The Party of Liberation, is also raising its profile in the U.S. after operating largely underground since the 1990s. Its first major event was a 2009 conference, followed by another one in Chicago this June. Starkly conflicting views swirl around Hizbut. It has been described as both a peaceful movement to restore one-time Islamic glory and a breeding ground for future suicide bombers, “a conveyer belt to terrorism,” in the words of Zeyno Baran, an expert on Islam in the modern world. Banned in most countries, Hizbut remains legal in others, including the United States, Great Britain, Australia and Indonesia, where its leaders say it has spread to all 33 provinces. It is closely monitored everywhere, and often operates on the knife-edge of legality. “The rhetoric they have goes to the fringe of democracy,” said Hans Joergen Bonnichsen, the former head of Denmark’s intelligence service. But the Danish Justice Ministry has twice asked the nation’s top prosecutor if Hizbut could be banned under Danish law, and both times the answer was no. Its new frontier in Asia ranges from Indonesia and neighboring Malaysia to Pakistan and China, where Beijing has accused it of inciting violence among Muslim Uighurs in the remote west. It has also become the most widespread, and persecuted, radical Muslim group in Central Asia. The Indonesia chapter is believed to be the largest, with a following estimated in the hundreds of thousands, according to Sidney Jones, an
expert on Islam in Southeast Asia. “They are a real force here. They are a greater long-term threat to Indonesia than people who use violence,” said Jones, a Jakarta-based analyst with the International Crisis Group think tank. “Collectively, hardline civil society can have a bigger effect than jihadists and terrorists.” Her words are echoed by antiterrorism expert Zhang Jiadong of China’s Fudan University, who said Hizbut is “more harmful than terrorist organizations, because it has more influence on ordinary people.” The group, estimated at up to 20,000 members in China, is more likely to foment riots or rebellions than terrorist attacks, he said. Ismail Yusanto, the group’s urbane spokesman in Indonesia, insists that “we are a peaceful Islamic movement.” The claims of nonviolence contrast with the movement’s fiery rhetoric, which calls for the annihilation of Israel — that’s what led to it being outlawed in Germany in 2003 — and exhorts Muslims to fight coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The U.S. State Department says the group “may indirectly generate support for terrorism but there is no evidence that it has committed any acts of terrorism.” Hizbut followers may later “graduate” to terror under the tutelage of other groups. Often cited are the first British suicide bombers, Asif Hanif and Omar Khan Sharif, who attacked a Tel Aviv bar in 2001 and had past Hizbut links.

he said. He further criticized the government`s policies of allowing the import of Chinese electronics which accounted for 33.3 percent or US$817.9 million. As a matter of fact, one of the Industry Ministry`s visions was to develop technology into a spearhead of product development and market creation. “How can we develop domestic technological products if Chinese products are not restricted,” he said. The lawmaker noted that the import of Chinese toys now represented 70.6 percent of the overall figure. The best solution to the Chinese domination of the domestic market was protecting the domestic market and empowering domestic traders so that they could compete with foreign rivals, he said.

DENPASAR - Bali traders and exporters have begun trying to gain a share in Middle Eastern markets by offering garments, handicraft products and other non-oil/non-gas commodities to consumers there, a provincial trade official said. The province’s handicraft and other non-oil/nongas exports to the Middle East reached US 2.3 million in the January-August 2011 period with almost 50 percent of the amount going to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, said Putu Bagiada, head of the Bali Industry and Trade Office’s export section. The figure represented an increase compared to that in the same period in 2010 when it was US 2.2 million, Putu said, adding, “To Dubai alone, the export value totaled US 1.1 million”. He further said consumers in Iran also bought Bali non-oil/non-gas products worth US 1 million during the first six months of 2011 while people in Saudi Arabia purchased US 108,000 worth of Balinese non-0il/non-gas commodities.
However, he said, the export of handicraft products including household utensils, furniture and garments from Bali to the Middle East was still fluctuating. Putu called on Bali’s exporters to intensively explore the markets in other Middle Eastern countries as well as those in Africa and South Asia. According to Putu, countries where Balinese non-oil/non-gas commodities had bigger market shares were in Central America and South America including Bra il which imported Balinese non-oil/ non-gas commodities worth US 2.9 million in the January-August 2011 period. Meanwhile, the export value of Bali’s products to Central American countries like Bahama, Panama and Costa Rica was still relatively small as it is only totaled US 3.1 million, he said. Consumers in the United States contributed the most to Bali’s income from handicraft product exports in the January-August 2011 period, namely US 71 million. Bali handicraft products entering the US market included garments, jewelry and silver works.

Balinese Culture Rp2.1 trillion for Ngurah Rai airport’s expansion Antara
Kuta - State airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I will allocate Rp2.1 trillion in funds for the expansion of Ngurah Rai international airport in Bali. “The funds will come from Angkasa Pura I’s internal cash sources and syndicated loans from national banks,” Director of Ngurah Rai Airport Development Project Sri Unon Setyasih said on Saturday. The funds would be used to renovate a number of buildings and facilities at the airport built on 285 hectares of land, she said. “Through the project the airport`s international terminal will be expanded to 129 thousand sq meters from 65.8 thousand sq meters. The domestic terminal which covers 13.3 thousand sq meters will be moved to the former location of international terminal. The airport’s apron will be expanded to 300.2 thousand sq meters from 214.5 thousand sq meters,” she said. The funds would also be used to build four-storeyed parking lot on 39 thousand sq meters of land, and expand international cargo terminal to 6 thousand sq meters, school complex and runway, she said. INGREDIENTS: 1 suckling pig, weighing about 6-8kg 1½ tbsp salt 200 shallots, peeled and sliced 100 gr cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 50 gr ginger, peeled & chopped 300 gr candlenuts, chopped 350 gr fresh turmeric, peeled &chopped 3 tbsp coriander seeds, crushed 80 gr laos, finely chopped 120 gr bird’s-eye chilies, sliced 10 stalks lemon grass, finely sliced 1 tbsp black peppercorns, crushed 1 tsp dried shrimp paste, roasted 5 fragrant lime leaves, finely shredded 2 salam leaves 2½ tbsp oil 4 tbsp turmeric water PREPARATION: Ensure inside of suckling pig is completely cleaned out. Season inside and outside with salt. Combine all other ingredients, except turmeric water, and mix thoroughly. Fill inside of suckling with mixture, close belly with string or thin satay skewer. Rub the outside of the pig with turmeric water until the skin is shiny yellow. Place suckling pig on roasting rack and roast in hot oven (220°C / 425°F) for approximately 1 hour. Rest for 10 minutes in warm place before ser ving. When ser ving, first remove the crisp skin with a strong car ving knife, then loosen meat from the bones and cut into even dice or slices. Place a heaped tablespoon of stuffing on each ser ving plate, and then top with meat and skin. Traditionally this dish is eaten with Jukut Nangka Mekuah and steamed rice. Balangan Beach IBP
Balangan is one of the surfing beaches on the western side of the Bukit peninsula located just north of Dreamland. To get there from Kuta you take Bypass Ngurah Rai heading towards Nusa Dua and look for the Uluwatu turn off to the right after about 10 minutes. Basically head up the hill and go straight through the small crossroads, ignoring the sign for Balangan to the right. Keep going and turn right at this entrance, which is also the Dreamland entrance. Follow the road downhill for a mile or so, you go through 3 roundabouts and will pass a small sign to the left saying Dreamland. Keep going and shortly you will see this turnoff with a sign for Balangan. This road becomes heavily rutted, after all the Bukit is a limestone plateau and the rain just chews up the ground. Riding slowly you can get down and can actually get a motorbike or SUV
all the way to the beach, which is nice! On the way down to the beach you will pass a couple of signs for accommodation. There are actually 3 places but the last one has not yet got themselves organized enough to fix up a sign. The 3 places are La Joya, Flower Bud Bungalows and Coconut Hummingbird. All bungalows are in semi-modern style with circular bamboo roof and sliding glass doors affording views of the surf. Heading down the hill you can park your car / bike or continue down. The entry to the beach is split by a gully that is dry most of the year. To the right is a line of shacks that service the surfing crowd. None were doing much business when I visited being March, there was surf however and I saw plenty of locals enjoying good waves. If you keep walking to the far right side of the beach you will dead end at Pura Balangan, the local temple.

Jackson judge calls attorney’s interview shocking Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — The judge overseeing the trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson’s death told the lead defense attorney Friday that he found an interview his law partner conducted on the case “shocking” and possible grounds for contempt. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor told attorneys he watched the interview during a break with his mouth open because attorney Matt Alford is identified as a member of Dr. Conrad Murray’s defense team and criticized a key prosecution witness. The judge noted that Alford used the pronouns “we” and “our” to describe decisions about the doctor’s defense. Alford, a partner of Murray’s lead defense lawyer Ed Chernoff, was interviewed outside the courthouse by “The Today Show.” “I sat there with m y
mouth open” while watching the interview, Pastor said, because Alford was identified as a member of Murray’s defense team, according to court transcripts. He also called the interview shocking. Attorneys and the judge huddled in several sidebar conferences throughout the day on the issue. Alford criticized a key prosecution witness, Alberto Alvarez, in the interview. Alvarez, a bodyguard for Jackson, testified Thursday that Murray scooped up vials of medicine and placed them in a bag before telling him to call 911. Pastor ordered Alford to appear in his courtroom on Nov. 15 for a contempt hearing. At the end of a heated conference on the issue, Pastor said Alford was considered a witness. That came after Chernoff told the judge to hold him in contempt and not punish Alford. Prosecutors complained about the interview Friday morning. To judge from its first two episodes, it’s a robust diversion from the real-life droughts and hurricanes, joblessness and political stalemate that were already giving you the willies. It aspires to be “The Shining”-meets-”Rosemary’s Baby,” with “Carrie” and “Don’t Look Now” tossed in. But more than a dead-on horror show, it’s a homage to cinematic spookery. And a good one. In short, “American Horror Story” doesn’t really scare you. It just gets in your head. The big unknown: Is it wily enough to stay there, week after week? Alert: Spoilers coming up — which is another way of saying you might just as well apply the time you’d spend reading this to watching the premiere (which airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. EDT), then making up your own mind. This place, the family’s new homestead, is a looming “classic L.A. Victorian from the 1920s,” according to the real-estate agent showing them around. But it seems more like a vestige of “Monster Chiller Horror Theater,” a domicile whose past residents have, of course, died gruesomely.

Associated Press Writer TORONTO — Two ice shelves that existed before Canada was settled by Europeans diminished significantly this summer, one nearly disappearing altogether, Canadian scientists say in new research. The loss is important as a marker of global warming, returning the Canadian Arctic to conditions that date back thousands of years, scientists say. Floating icebergs that have broken free as a result pose a risk to offshore oil facilities and potentially to shipping lanes. The breaking apart of the ice shelves also reduces the environment that supports microbial life and changes the look of Canada’s coastline. Luke Copland is an associate professor in the geography department at the University of Ottawa who co-authored the research. He said the Serson Ice Shelf shrank from 79.15 square miles (205 square kilometers) to two remnant sections three years ago, and was further diminished this past summer. Copland said the shelf went from a 16-square-mile (42-square-kilometer) floating glacier tongue to 9.65 square miles (25 square kilometers), and the second section from 13.51 square miles (35 square kilometers) to 2 square miles (7 square kilometers), off Ellesmere Island’s northern coastline. This past summer, Ward Hunt Ice Shelf’s central area disintegrated into drifting ice masses, leaving two
separate ice shelves measuring 87.65 and 28.75 square miles (227 and 74 square kilometers) respectively, reduced from 131.7 square miles (340 square kilometers) the previous year. “It has dramatically broken apart in two separate areas and there’s nothing in between now but water,” said Copland. Copland said those two losses are significant, especially since the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf has always been the biggest, the farthest north and the one scientists thought might have been the most stable. “Recent (ice shelf) loss has been very rapid, and goes hand-in-hand with the rapid sea ice decline we have seen in this decade and the increasing warmth and extensive melt in the Arctic regions,” said Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, remarking on the research. Copland, who uses satellite imagery and who has conducted field work in the Arctic every May for the past five years, said since the end of July, pieces equaling one and a half times the size of Manhattan Island have broken off. Co-researcher Derek Mueller, an assistant professor at Carleton University’s geography and environmental studies department, said the loss this past summer equals up to three billion tons. Copland said their findings have not yet been peer reviewed since the research is new, but a number of scientists contacted by The Associated Press reviewed the findings, agreeing the loss in volume of ice shelves is significant.

Other cases surfaced in the Netherlands and the US states of Georgia, Pennsylvania and Arizona, for 95 total confirmed cases over two years. The virus was first discovered in four children who were sick with pneumonia in California in 1962, but subsequent incidences have been rare and sporadic, according to the CDC. “Identification of a large number of patients with HEV68 respiratory disease detected during a single season, such as described in this report, is a recent phenomenon,” it added.

3HGURVD ZLQV DWWULWLRQDO -DSDQHVH *UDQG 3UL[ Dani Pedrosa handed Honda a home win in an eventful and attritional race at Motegi, which counted Ducati’s Valentino Rossi as one of its several victims. Jorge Lorenzo finished second and Casey Stoner a distant third following a mistake in the early stages. Stoner’s gap now stands at 40 points over Yamaha’s Lorenzo. Pedrosa’s route to the front happened more by fortune than design, as accidents dominated the Japanese Grand Prix. Rossi was the first casualty, as he made contact with Lorenzo at Turn 2 on the opening, losing the front end and also collecting Yamaha’s Ben Spies as he slid into the gravel and out of the race. Stoner meanwhile had protected his lead and rapidly built a lead of more than 1s, but on lap four suffered a huge wobble over the back straight bumps and missed his braking point into Turn 11 running through the gravel and dropping down to seventh as a result. The lead therefore transferred to Andrea Dovizioso, who had passed his Honda team-mate Pedrosa in the opening stages. Dovizioso however was one of three riders adjudged to have jumped the
start, and on lap five came into the pits for his ride-through - Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli and Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow following him in after also falling foul of the stewards. Victory became a straight fight between Pedrosa and Lorenzo, and a series of fastest laps was enough to earn the Honda man his third win of the year. Third had been a fight between the one Suzuki of Alvaro Bautista and the remaining works Ducati of Nicky Hayden, but by the halfway distance Stoner had passed both as he fought his way back to third. As he did so, Motegi claimed another two victims. Hayden ran deep and through the gravel at Turn 1 while trying to follow Stoner, while several laps later Bautista made a mistake of his own
accord, losing the front of the Suzuki at Turn 12 and crashing out from fourth. Dovizioso and Simoncelli meanwhile had fought their way back through the field, and the Gresini rider claimed fourth one lap from the end with a typically aggressive pass at Turn 11. Having fallen on the opening lap incident with Rossi, Spies capped a fine comeback ride by finishing sixth, ahead of Hayden and Tech 3 Yamaha’s Colin Edwards. Toni Elias on the LCR Honda had held sixth but crashed with just seven laps to go, while on his MotoGP debut Damian Cudlin (Pramac Ducati) was another Motegi casualty, crashing out just after the half-distance mark. Although Citroen driver Ogier managed to pull out a 9.5-second advantage over the chasing Mini yesterday afternoon, Sordo was quicker on today’s opener Graviere de Bischwiller, fastest of all on Vignoble de Cleebourg, then equalled Ogier on the Haguenau street stage. The gap between them now stands at 4.5s with three stages to go. “That’s not bad, but we need to be faster if we want to win,” said Sordo. “I’m pushing hard, I just have to keep up the pressure.” Ogier said he was relishing the fight and expected it to go down to the wire. “I think it will be close because Dani is pushing hard,” he said. “He had a good drive this morning. It’s good fun.” Petter Solberg (Solberg Citroen) and Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford) remain third and fourth, with Ford yet to apply the team orders that will elevate title contender Mikko Hirvonen up a place from his current fifth. Armindo Araujo crashed his Motorsport Italia Mini out of seventh on the first stage of the morning, where Dennis Kuipers (FERM Ford) cemented his potential careerbest sixth by setting a surprise second-fastest time.
