Inquiries begin into nude celebrity photo leaks Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — The FBI said Monday it was addressing allegations that online accounts of several celebrities, including Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, had been hacked, leading to the posting of their nude photographs online. The agency did not say what actions it was taking to investigate who was responsible for posting naked photos of Lawrence and other stars. Apple said Monday it was looking into whether its online photo-sharing service had been hacked to obtain the intimate images.

Lawrence, a three-time Oscar nominee who won for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook,” contacted authorities after the images began appearing Sunday. Naked images purporting to be of other female stars were also posted, although the authenticity of many couldn’t be confirmed. The source of the leak was unclear. “This is a flagrant violation of privacy,” Lawrence’s publicist Liz Mahoney wrote in a statement. “The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence.” The FBI said it was “aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter.” “Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time,” spokeswoman Laura Eimiller wrote in a statement. Apple Inc. spokeswoman Natalie Kerris
said the company was investigating whether any iCloud accounts had been tampered with, but she did not give any further details. Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead also confirmed that nude photos of her were posted online. “To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves,” Winstead posted on Twitter. Winstead, who starred in “Final Destination 3” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” wrote that she thought the images had been destroyed.
“Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this,” Winstead wrote. The FBI has investigated previous leaks of nude celebrity images, including leaks involving Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Christina Aguilera and footage of television sports reporter Erin Andrews in a Tennessee hotel room. Those cases resulted in convictions.

DENPASAR - Aside from being flooded with foreign travelers, Bali also receives an abundance of products imported from various countries, especially China. The country has share of 63.71 percent of the total import value which reaches USD 21,473,353 in July 2014. The Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Panusunan Siregar, said the products imported into the Island of the Gods increased during this period. The increase in the import value was quite staggering, reaching 129.02 percent over the same period in the previous year reaching USD 9,376,131. This figure also increased 170.05 percent compared to June 2014 amounting to USD 7,951,572.
“Fortunately, the products brought into Bali were not food and textile products such as rice, meat, clothing or other vital products. So, they do not bring in negative impact for the economy,” said Panusunan Siregar. He explained that the main commodities imported to Bali included mechanical products, jewelry, essential oils, perfumery cosmetics, electrical appliances and
lime. Their respective percentage was 66.05 percent, 10.46 percent, 5.90 percent, 3.36 percent and 1.80 percent. “Those products include supporting tools, such as agricultural machinery, processor of raw materials and heavy equipment. On that account, we are actually benefited with these imports, as they can support the economy,” he said. He mentioned the cumulative imported goods of Bali province in July 2014 reached USD 183,948,093 or 70.53 percent increase compared to the condition of previous year reaching USD 107,871,130. “In addition to China, we also import some products from Thailand, Germany, Australia,
United States and Switzerland,” he said. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. IB Raka Suardana expressed that disruption of Indonesia was not only in terms of security, but also a threat to the cultural assets in the form of culture and local products having faced the free trade. Moreover, the younger generation of this nation preferred to use imported products and was ashamed of using domestic products. Actually, loving Indonesian products could reflect how great the love of people in this nation was. “Apparently, young people do not feel guilty when putting on or consuming imported products. Even, they have a different kind
of pride when using imported products. In the matter of fashion products, our young generation does not feel guilty when showing off that what they wear is other’s product,” he said. To that end, he said there should be a mindset change in the community when wishing to increase the use of domestic products. “Who should start? They must be pioneered by the officials, leaders, those becoming role models, artists, lecturers and teachers. NEGARA - After the fire incident afflicting to dozens of kiosks and stalls in Pekutatan public market, Friday night (Aug 29), trading activities in the market has not recovered yet. Some traders whose stall and space engulfed by the fire are still traumatized as they found their location and goods totally burned out. Until Monday (Sep 1), debris of the buildings still littered. Dozens of traders lost their merchandise and space to do selling. Some of them are still shocked due to the incident. Surely it will take long time to recover their business. One of the security guards of the market met last Monday revealed that previously the market was also on fire in 1991. A total of 8 stores, 12 kiosks and 11 stalls burned out. They were all located in the western block of the Pekutatan public market. Subdistrict head of Pekutatan, Ketut Eko Susila, when met on Monday said the greengrocers and canang sellers whose kiosk was on fire were temporarily relocated to location of
the night market on the north side. Based on data collection, he said there were dozens of stalls burned out along with stall P and stall O. A total of 21 stalls were completely on fire. “They burned out with merchandise. The most serious incident afflicted the stalls in the market,” he explained. For the time being, the market only left the building debris and they would be cleaned up through mutual assistance. According to him, the subdistrict and Pekutatan village officers would ask for help to local Military Region Command to clean up the market debris. For short term, the regional enterprise (Perusda) and Jembrana Industry, Trade and Cooperative Agency would build shanties to accommodate the traders whose kiosk and stall were on fire. “As planned, it will be built in front area as temporary shanty,” he added. Putra, with permission from the Chief of Jembrana Police said on Monday (Sep 1) that the results of forensic laboratory found if the fire was kindled by the insulation failure on electrical wires and the cables did not meet standard quality. According to this officer from Bangli, the evidence had also been secured including wires and chipped copper cables and the ashes of the burned stuff. The findings indicated if the cables did not comply with the standard and were installed by the traders, not by the installer of PLN. As a result, the connector did not get plugged firmly into the socket. Besides, it was also found many cables connected to bulb fitting and large cables. Necessarily, one block used one MCB, but in fact, some blocks only used one MCB. According to Sudarma Putra, the fire incident occurred at the Pekutatan market began from stall P, kiosk 17 and kiosk 18 belonging to Gusti Putu Artawan that sold fabrics. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAR - The Karangasem district government in the island resort of Bali has collaborated with all organizations and religious institutions to anticipate the infiltration of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ideology, noted an official. “To anticipate possible infiltration of the ISIS ideology, we are strengthening communication with all organizations and religious institutions here,” Karangasem district government spokesman I. Putu Arawa stated on Tuesday. He also called on all public elements in the district to jointly counter the movement of ISIS in Indonesia, particularly in Karan-
gasem district. Arawa noted that all religious organizations and public elements in the district have signed a joint statement to reject the presence of the ISIS radical movement in the district and the country. Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Retired Inspector General Ansyaad Mbai called on all elements of the nation to be alert regarding the presence
of the organization that embraces a radical ideology. “There is no nation, religion, or community that requires the presence of ISIS,” Ansyaad Mbai affirmed in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, on Monday. He remarked that ISIS has the potential to grow its terrorist base in certain pockets in Indonesia. Therefore, the BNPT has urged community organizations, scholars,

NEW YORK— The latest banks are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Startups, such as Moven and Simple, offer banking that’s designed specifically for smartphones, enabling users to track their spending on the go. Some things haven’t changed. Like traditional banks, customers open a checking account, get a debit card and are able to make check deposits and pay their bills. Like many Internet banks before them, they have no maintenance or overdraft fees, there are no physical branches and depositing cash is a challenge. What makes Moven and Simple different is their apps. Every time a debit card is swiped at
a store, a notification is sent to the phone letting the user know how much was spent and how much money is left in the account. “It makes them mindful of what they spend,” says Alex Sion, president and co-founder of Moven, comparing it to fitness activity trackers. “What Fitbit and Nike Fuel does for your health, we do for your wallet.” Both services automatically categorize purchases to provide an overview of what was spent on groceries, dining out or other areas over time. With Simple, users can set goals, such as saving up for a new bike, and the app will show how much needs to be saved every day to meet that goal.
Moven and Simple say most of their users are between the ages of 25 and 36, an age group that is often ignored by bigger banks who are more concerned with customers who have more money in their accounts. Portland, Oregon-based Simple, says it has more than 100,000 customers. Moven, which is based in New York, declined to say how many customers it has. The two companies make money from fees merchants pay every time customers swipe their debit card. accounts at Bank of America where he was getting charged overdraft and ATM fees. He keeps a savings account at a military bank in Texas. Carr, 35, has his pay sent directly to his Simple account. To pay his rent, he uses Simple’s bill pay function to send a paper check to his oldschool landlord every month. When he wanted to save $1,600 for a new laptop, he used the app to come up with a six-month budget. The app also made him realize he was spending too much on fast food and gas. So he cut down on eating out and now rides the subway to get to his information technology job at a Los Angeles movie studio. “It’s saved me so much,” says Carr.

Illegal modern store remains in operation

AMLAPURA - Although having no permit, a modern store can still operate without any enforcement by municipal police of Karangasem. Actually the store had previously been closed by municipal police in September 2013. Having been disciplined, the store was even renamed from Indomaret to Toko Sudirman and so far still operates as usual. Merchandiser of Toko Sudirman, I Wayan Adi Suradnya, claimed that the store had been renamed from Indomaret to Toko Sudirman since it was closed by the municipal police of Karangasem. Though having been renamed, he claimed to have not owned an operating permit. He admitted that his party still dared to operate because it still submitted the permit and there was no enforcement. When confirmed to Chief of the Karangasem Municipal Police, Ketut Ardita, he claimed that his party would discipline it again next week. He revealed that his staff had inspected up to two times, but when arriving at location the store suddenly closed. “We have sent reprimand letter for three times, but it is still in operation. Therefore, we will take action against the modern store,” he said when contacted on Monday (Sep 1). His party would recheck the documents related to the renaming to Toko Sudirman. The modern store had broken the Regent Regulation No. 29/2011 regarding the arrangement and development of traditional markets, shopping malls and modern stores. “The basic reference to prohibit is that only eight modern stores are allowed to operate in a subdistrict town. The modern store located in front of the SMA PGRI high school is the ninth, so that it cannot get a permit,” he explained. According to Ardita, the problem was that the chained store had changed its display into a local store. In reality, there was no couple. There was instead a young man from Japan named Mitsutoki Shigeta, whom she met twice but who never spoke a word to her. This same man — reportedly the son of a Japanese billionaire — would go on to make surrogate babies with 10 other women in Thailand, police say, spending more than half a million dollars to father at least 16 children for reasons still unclear. The mystery surrounding Shigeta has riveted Thailand and become the focal point of a growing scandal over commercial surrogacy. The industry that catered to foreigners has thrived on semi-secrecy, deception and legal loopholes, and Thailand’s military government is vowing to shut it down. Wassana’s story, which she shared with The Associated Press on condition that her last name not be used to protect her family and 8-year-old son from embarrassment, offers clues into an extraordinarily complex puzzle that boils down to two questions: Who is Shigeta and why did he want so many babies? Shigeta is being investigated for human trafficking and child exploitation, but Thai police say they haven’t found evidence of either. The 24-year-old, now the focus of an Asia-wide investigation, has said through a lawyer that he simply wanted a big family. He has not been charged with any crime and is trying to get his children back — 12 are currently in Thailand being cared for by social services. His whereabouts are un-
known; he left Bangkok after police raided his condominium Aug. 5 and discovered nine babies living with nine nannies. Police say he sent DNA samples from Japan that prove he is the babies’ father. Key to unraveling all of this are the women Shigeta paid to bear his children. And Wassana, whose account has been corroborated by police, was his first. Wassana’s Bangkok is not the city of skyscrapers and spas that most visitors see. The petite, soft-spoken 32-year-old with a ninth grade education has spent her life in a trash-strewn slum, scraping by selling traditional Thai sweets from a food cart and sharing a mildew-stained tenement with seven relatives. At $6 a day, it was affordable until her late father’s medical bills drained the family’s savings. They couldn’t pay rent for a year and faced eviction. So when her sister stumbled upon an ad seeking surrogates in 2012, Wassana didn’t hesitate. “I thought that any parents who would spend so much money to get a baby must want him desperately,” she says. “The agent told me it was for a foreign couple.” She assumed it was customary to keep the biological parents’ identities confidential. In a country where deference to authority is expected — especially for poor, uneducated women — she didn’t probe. She wondered, though, who the baby’s mother was. “I don’t know if the doctor used my eggs or another woman’s,” she says. “Nobody told me.”

FRANKFURT — Europe’s economic recovery is in danger. Governments are under pressure to save it, but struggling with political obstacles and disagreement among themselves over what to do. Instead, the region is pinning its hopes — once again — on the European Central Bank, which is expected to launch new stimulus measures if the economy gets any worse. Europe’s lack of growth is looming larger and larger, however, and the ECB says it can’t save the economy alone. For more than five years since the eurozone hit turbulence over too much debt in 2009, governments’ answer has been to raise taxes and restrain spending. And there’s been some progress. Deficits have shrunk, and countries that needed bailout loans are slowly getting their act together. But second quarter growth was zero, after only four quarters of measly expansion. While unemployment in the United States has fallen to 6.2 percent from 10 percent at its peak in Oct. 2009, Europe’s is at 11.5 percent — still near last summer’ 12 percent. The risk is that the eurozone remains stagnant for years — bad news not just for its people but also its three major trading partners: the U.S., Britain and China. As worries spread, the debate over austerity versus growth is sharpening again. EU leaders will meet Oct. 6 to discuss growth, while the ECB will hold a policy meeting Thursday at which it is expected to flag its willingness to announce more stimulus such as bond purchases. ECB President Mario Draghi is ringing the alarm. He says the central bank can’t do it all alone and that governments should dial back austerity, within EU rules aimed at restraining deficits. “It would be helpful for the overall stance of policy if fiscal policy could play a greater role alongside monetary policy, and I believe there is scope for this,” Draghi said in a speech last week. Government spending can help boost growth by providing demand when the private sector is struggling. Draghi’s not the budget boss, however. Each of the eurozone’s 18 member governments decides its own spending. Germany, Europe’s biggest economic and political power, and Chancellor Angela Merkel are sticking with the emphasis on austerity. Countries with extremely high debt, such Italy, are under pressure to keep the lid on spending.

MILWAUKEE — President Barack Obama renewed his push for Congress to raise the U.S. minimum wage Monday in a buoyant accounting of the economy’s “revving” performance, delivered on behalf of Democrats opening their fall campaigns for the midterm congressional elections. “America deserves a raise,” he told a union crowd in Milwaukee, vowing to keep a hard sell on Congress in much the way he once courted his wife. “I just wore her down,” he cracked. Timing his push to Labor Day, the traditional start of the autumn campaign, Obama aggressively drew attention to recent economic gains, setting aside past caution on that subject. “By almost every measure the American economy and American workers are better off than when I took office,” he said, rattling off a string of improving economic indicators even while acknowledging not all people are benefiting. “The engines,” he said, “are revving a little louder.” It was, at least indirectly, a pep talk for Democrats facing tough races in a nation still gripped with economic anxieties. Thomas Dandois and Valentine Bourrat were detained at the start of August while making a documentary for Franco-German television channel Arte in the restive eastern region. They are accused of breaking immigration laws -- as they had tourist, not journalist, visas -- and police said previously if found guilty they could be jailed for up to five years. Indonesia is deeply sensitive about journalists covering Papua, where a low-level insurgency against the central government has simmered for decades, and rarely grants visas for foreigners to report independently in the region. Foreign reporters detained for illegal reporting in Papua have in the past been swiftly deported. However Aristo Pangaribuan, the lawyer for the French journalists, said Tuesday that a trial was looking likely. “There is a huge possibility that both of them will go into trial,” he told AFP in an email. Gardu Ditiro Tampubolon, the immigration chief in Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, said there was “strong evidence” against the pair. “We are certain they have
committed an immigration violation,” said Tampubolon, whose department is investigating the journalists. The pair are being held at an immigration facility in Jayapura. It was not clear when a trial might start but Tampubolon said that investigators would likely submit in two weeks a case file to prosecutors, who will have the final decision on whether the case proceeds to court. After the file is submitted, it would still take some time before a trial begins. Under the Indonesian legal system, suspects are often detained without charge for lengthy periods while authorities complete investigations. Suspects are only formally charged in court at the start of a trial. Tampubolon said the pair had admitted to breaking visa rules. “They told us they had no idea there was such a regulation in the first place,” he said. “But the main point is, they have admitted to their wrongdoing and have been very cooperative and respectful during the investigation process.” Dandois was detained at a hotel in the city of Wamena with members of separatist group the Free Papua Movement (OPM), and Bourrat was detained shortly afterwards. Her family dominates wealthy Banten province on the main island of Java, controlling five of its eight districts. It is one of several local political dynasties that have flourished since the 1998 downfall of dictator Suharto. Judges at a special anti-corrup-
tion court in Jakarta found the 52year-old guilty of bribing Mochtar with one billion rupiah ($85,000) to annul a local election result in Banten that went against one of her close associates. She was sentenced to four years in jail, lighter than the 10-year term sought by prosecutors. Farzad Esmaili said the Talash-3, or Endeavor-3 missile will enable Iranian forces to “shoot down any hostile target,” even at high altitudes. Speaking on state TV, he said the missile was successfully test-fired recently. He did not describe its range. Tehran regularly announces military advances that cannot be independently verified. The general also inaugurated two radar systems — Arash-2, tasked
with detecting miniature drones at a distance of 150 kilometers (93 miles), and also Kayhan, which he said was capable of detecting cruise missiles and drones. Another new system inaugurated on Tuesday enables Iran to automatically process information on civilian airliners using Iranian airspace. The number of international civilian flights that pass through Iranian airspace has doubled in recent months, reaching some 900 over
an average 24-hour period. The increase is likely a result of airlines changing routes to avoid nearby countries undergoing conflict such as Iraq, Syria and Ukraine. Iran launched a homegrown defense industry in 1992 that produces light and heavy weapons ranging from mortars to tanks and submarines. English clubs lead the way in summer spending spree Reuters
LONDON - English Premier League soccer clubs spent a record 835 million pounds ($1.4 billion) on hiring players during the summer transfer window as they reinvested cash from the latest round of broadcast deals. That total was almost double the 425 million paid out by teams in Spain’s La Liga, the next highest spending country, according to figures released by business services group Deloitte on Tuesday. The Premier League generates more money than any domestic soccer competition while Spain is home to Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two clubs who enjoy the highest revenues thanks to the way television cash is distributed. Manchester United, English champions a record 20 times, spent around 150 million pounds as new manager Louis van Gaal tries to ensure there is no repeat of last season’s disappointing seventh place finish. Teams in Europe’s main leagues had until late on Monday to finalise their squads for the next few months, leading to frenzied trading in the final few hours of the transfer window. MILAN — AC Milan had a busy final day of the transfer window as it completed the signings of Marco van Ginkel and Giacomo Bonaventura but saw the deal for Jonathan Biabiany collapse at the last moment. The 21-year-old Van Ginkel has been brought in on a one-year loan deal from Chelsea, joining former Stamford Bridge teammate Fernando Torres — who signed a two-year loan deal at the weekend. “I am very happy, Milan is a great club where many Dutch players have played and some big names,” Van Ginkel said. “I know Nigel De Jong from my experiences with the national team, I spoke to him about Milan and he said excellent things about the club.” Van Ginkel joined Chelsea last summer from Vitesse Arnhem but the Netherlands midfielder made just four appearances due to a cruciate ligament injury. Biabiany had agreed to the move from Parma and had already posed in the Milan shirt and scarf, but the

MILAN — AC Milan had a busy final day of the transfer window as it completed the signings of Marco van Ginkel and Giacomo Bonaventura but saw the deal for Jonathan Biabiany collapse at the last moment. The 21-year-old Van Ginkel has been brought in on a one-year loan deal from Chelsea, joining former Stamford Bridge teammate Fernando Torres — who signed a two-year loan deal at the weekend. “I am very happy, Milan is a great club where many Dutch players have played and some big names,” Van Ginkel said. “I know Nigel De Jong from my experiences with the national team, I spoke to him about Milan and he said excellent things about the club.” Van Ginkel joined Chelsea last summer from Vitesse Arnhem but the Netherlands midfielder made just four appearances due to a cruciate ligament injury. Iran unveils new surfaceto-air missile, radars

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran on Tuesday unveiled a new surface-to-air missile and two radar systems it claims will boost the country’s defense capabilities. Air defense chief Gen. Farzad Esmaili said the Talash-3, or Endeavor-3 missile will enable Iranian forces to “shoot down any hostile target,” even at high altitudes. Speaking on state TV, he said the missile was successfully test-fired recently. He did not describe its range. Tehran regularly announces military advances that cannot be independently verified. The general also inaugurated two radar systems — Arash-2, tasked
with detecting miniature drones at a distance of 150 kilometers (93 miles), and also Kayhan, which he said was capable of detecting cruise missiles and drones. Another new system inaugurated on Tuesday enables Iran to automatically process information on civilian airliners using Iranian airspace. The number of international civilian flights that pass through Iranian airspace has doubled in recent months, reaching some 900 over
an average 24-hour period. The increase is likely a result of airlines changing routes to avoid nearby countries undergoing conflict such as Iraq, Syria and Ukraine. Iran launched a homegrown defense industry in 1992 that produces light and heavy weapons ranging from mortars to tanks and submarines. It has surface-to-surface missiles with a range of about 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), enough to reach Israel and U.S. military bases in the region.

Liberian Ebola survivor praises experimental drug

MONROVIA, Liberia — A Liberian health worker who recovered from Ebola after receiving an experimental drug urged the manufacturer to speed up its production and send it to Africa, while crowds celebrated in the streets Saturday after authorities reopened a slum that had been barricaded for more than a week to try to contain the disease. Physician’s assistant Kyndy Kobbah was expected to be released from hospital Saturday after she survived Ebola, which has been fatal in more than half the cases sweeping West Africa. Kobbah contracted the disease while working at a government-run hospital north of the capital. In an interview with The Associated Press before her release, she said when she informed her family that she had been cured, the home
exploded with joy “and the house is on fire right now” with celebration. “I am very fine and all right, glory be to God,” she said. “I trusted God that I was going to be healed.” Kobbah urged the manufacturer of the experimental drug known as ZMapp to step up production. The company has said that all its supplies are exhausted and it will take months to make more. “They need to make more Zmapp and send to us,” she said. Doctors have said there is no way to know whether ZMapp made a difference or if survivors like Kobbah recovered on their own, as about 45 percent of people infected in this outbreak have. The drug had never been tested in humans before it was given to two Americans who were infected with Ebola in Liberia. They survived Ebola and were released from an Atlanta hospital. Liberia’s president had ordered the barricade on Aug. 19 after West Point residents stormed an Ebola health center several days earlier. Residents said they did not want sick people being brought into the community, although those staying at the center were only under observation during a 21-day incubation period. FRANKFURT — Europe’s economic recovery is in danger. Governments are under pressure to save it, but struggling with political obstacles and disagreement among themselves over what to do. Instead, the region is pinning its hopes — once again — on the European Central Bank, which is expected to launch new stimulus measures if the economy gets any worse. Europe’s lack of growth is looming larger and larger, however, and the ECB says it can’t save the economy alone. For more than five years since the eurozone hit turbulence over too much debt in 2009, governments’ answer has been to raise taxes and restrain spending. And there’s been some progress. Deficits have shrunk, and countries that needed bailout loans are slowly getting their act together. But second quarter growth was zero, after only four quarters of measly expansion. While unemployment in the United States has fallen to 6.2 percent from 10 percent at its peak in Oct. 2009, Europe’s is at 11.5 percent — still near last summer’ 12 percent. The risk is that the eurozone remains stagnant for years — bad news not just for its people but also its three major trading partners: the U.S., Britain and China. As worries spread, the debate over austerity versus growth is sharpening again. EU leaders will meet Oct. 6 to discuss growth, while the ECB will hold a policy meeting Thursday at which it is expected to flag its willingness to announce more stimulus such as bond purchases. ECB President Mario Draghi is ringing the alarm. He says the central bank can’t do it all alone and that governments should dial back austerity, within EU rules aimed at restraining deficits. “It would be helpful for the overall stance of policy if fiscal policy could play a greater role alongside monetary policy, and I believe there is scope for this,” Draghi said in a speech last week. Government spending can help boost growth by providing demand when the private sector is struggling. Draghi’s not the budget boss, however. Each of the eurozone’s 18 member governments decides its own spending. Germany, Europe’s biggest economic and political power, and Chancellor Angela Merkel are sticking with the emphasis on austerity. Countries with extremely high debt, such Italy, are under pressure to keep the lid on spending.

MILWAUKEE — President Barack Obama renewed his push for Congress to raise the U.S. minimum wage Monday in a buoyant accounting of the economy’s “revving” performance, delivered on behalf of Democrats opening their fall campaigns for the midterm congressional elections. “America deserves a raise,” he told a union crowd in Milwaukee, vowing to keep a hard sell on Congress in much the way he once courted his wife. “I just wore her down,” he cracked. Timing his push to Labor Day, the traditional start of the autumn campaign, Obama aggressively drew attention to recent economic gains, setting aside past caution on that subject. “By almost every measure the American economy and American workers are better off than when I took office,” he said, rattling off a string of improving economic indicators even while acknowledging not all people are benefiting. “The engines,” he said, “are revving a little louder.” It was, at least indirectly, a pep talk for Democrats facing tough races in a nation still gripped with economic anxieties. Republicans, many of whom maintain that an increase would hurt small businesses and slow down hiring. No one expects Congress to act on it before the November elections. Despite the absence of a federal increase, 13 states raised their minimum wages at the beginning of this year. Those states have added jobs at a faster pace than those that did not raise the wage, providing a counterpoint to a Congressional Budget Office report earlier this year that projected that a higher minimum wage of $10.10 an hour could cost the nation 500,000 jobs. JAYAPURA - Two French journalists arrested in Indonesia’s Papua while reporting on the separatist movement are likely to go on trial, their lawyer said Tuesday, with the pair facing up to five years in jail. Thomas Dandois and Valentine Bourrat were detained at the start of August while making a documentary for Franco-German television channel Arte in the restive eastern region. They are accused of breaking immigration laws -- as they had tourist, not journalist, visas -- and police said previously if found guilty they could be jailed for up to five years. Indonesia is deeply sensitive about journalists covering Papua, where a low-level insurgency against the central government has simmered for decades, and rarely grants visas for foreigners to report independently in the region. Foreign reporters detained for illegal reporting in Papua have in the past been swiftly deported. However Aristo Pangaribuan, the lawyer for the French journalists, said Tuesday that a trial was looking likely. “There is a huge possibility that both of them will go into trial,” he told AFP in an email. Gardu Ditiro Tampubolon, the immigration chief in Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, said there was “strong evidence” against the pair. “We are certain they have
committed an immigration violation,” said Tampubolon, whose department is investigating the journalists. The pair are being held at an immigration facility in Jayapura. It was not clear when a trial might start but Tampubolon said that investigators would likely submit in two weeks a case file to prosecutors, who will have the final decision on whether the case proceeds to court. After the file is submitted, it would still take some time before a trial begins. Under the Indonesian legal system, suspects are often detained without charge for lengthy periods while authorities complete investigations. Suspects are only formally charged in court at the start of a trial. Tampubolon said the pair had admitted to breaking visa rules. “They told us they had no idea there was such a regulation in the first place,” he said. “But the main point is, they have admitted to their wrongdoing and have been very cooperative and respectful during the investigation process.” Dandois was detained at a hotel in the city of Wamena with members of separatist group the Free Papua Movement (OPM), and Bourrat was detained shortly afterwards. The OPM has been at the forefront of the fight against the central government in the resource-rich but poor, ethnically Melanesian region.

The case of Ratu Atut Chosiyah has transfixed even graft-weary Indonesia since her arrest last year for giving kickbacks to the constitutional court’s then chief justice, Akil Mochtar. Her family dominates wealthy Banten province on the main island of Java, controlling five of its eight districts. It is one of several local political dynasties that have flourished since the 1998 downfall of dictator Suharto. Judges at a special anti-corrup-
tion court in Jakarta found the 52year-old guilty of bribing Mochtar with one billion rupiah ($85,000) to annul a local election result in Banten that went against one of her close associates. She was sentenced to four years in jail, lighter than the 10-year term sought by prosecutors. She was also ordered to pay a fine of 200 million rupiah. “Clearly it’s not fair to me,” said Chosiyah, who has been in custody since her arrest, after the verdict was handed down. “I’m the victim.” Prosecutors said at an earlier hearing that the judge was asked to annul the result during a meeting in Singapore, and the constitutional court later did so. on election disputes. The governor’s brother, Tubagus Chaeri Wardana, was jailed for five years in June for plotting to bribe Mochtar to influence his rulings on election disputes in Banten, after a separate trial. Despite the scandal, the governor’s family remain powerful in the province. Mochtar was jailed for life in June for accepting more than $5 million in bribes to influence rulings on election disputes, linked to the case of Chosiyah and a series of others. NGO Transparency International ranked Indonesia 114th out of 177 countries and territories in its annual corruption perceptions index last year. A number one ranking means the least corrupt.

Illegal modern store remains in operation

AMLAPURA - Although having no permit, a modern store can still operate without any enforcement by municipal police of Karangasem. Actually the store had previously been closed by municipal police in September 2013. Having been disciplined, the store was even renamed from Indomaret to Toko Sudirman and so far still operates as usual. Merchandiser of Toko Sudirman, I Wayan Adi Suradnya, claimed that the store had been renamed from Indomaret to Toko Sudirman since it was closed by the municipal police of Karangasem. Though having been renamed, he claimed to have not owned an operating permit. He admitted that his party still dared to operate because it still submitted the permit and there was no enforcement. When confirmed to Chief of the Karangasem Municipal Police, Ketut Ardita, he claimed that his party would discipline it again next week. He revealed that his staff had inspected up to two times, but when arriving at location the store suddenly closed. “We have sent reprimand letter for three times, but it is still in operation. Therefore, we will take action against the modern store,” he said when contacted on Monday (Sep 1). His party would recheck the documents related to the renaming to Toko Sudirman. The modern store had broken the Regent Regulation No. 29/2011 regarding the arrangement and development of traditional markets, shopping malls and modern stores. “The basic reference to prohibit is that only eight modern stores are allowed to operate in a subdistrict town. The modern store located in front of the SMA PGRI high school is the ninth, so that it cannot get a permit,” he explained. According to Ardita, the problem was that the chained store had changed its display into a local store. Actually, in terms of management, it was still handled by modern chained store. “Tomorrow, we will do an inspection to crack down on the store,” he concluded. (dwa)

In reality, there was no couple. There was instead a young man from Japan named Mitsutoki Shigeta, whom she met twice but who never spoke a word to her. This same man — reportedly the son of a Japanese billionaire — would go on to make surrogate babies with 10 other women in Thailand, police say, spending more than half a million dollars to father at least 16 children for reasons still unclear. The mystery surrounding Shigeta has riveted Thailand and become the focal point of a growing scandal over commercial surrogacy. The industry that catered to foreigners has thrived on semi-secrecy, deception and legal loopholes, and Thailand’s military government is vowing to shut it down. Wassana’s story, which she shared with The Associated Press on condition that her last name not be used to protect her family and 8-year-old son from embarrassment, offers clues into an extraordinarily complex puzzle that boils down to two questions: Who is Shigeta and why did he want so many babies? Shigeta is being investigated for human trafficking and child exploitation, but Thai police say they haven’t found evidence of either. The 24-year-old, now the focus of an Asia-wide investigation, has said through a lawyer that he simply wanted a big family. He has not been charged with any crime and is trying to get his children back — 12 are currently in Thailand being cared for by social services. His whereabouts are un-
known; he left Bangkok after police raided his condominium Aug. 5 and discovered nine babies living with nine nannies. Police say he sent DNA samples from Japan that prove he is the babies’ father. Key to unraveling all of this are the women Shigeta paid to bear his children. And Wassana, whose account has been corroborated by police, was his first. Wassana’s Bangkok is not the city of skyscrapers and spas that most visitors see. The petite, soft-spoken 32-year-old with a ninth grade education has spent her life in a trash-strewn slum, scraping by selling traditional Thai sweets from a food cart and sharing a mildew-stained tenement with seven relatives. At $6 a day, it was affordable until her late father’s medical bills drained the family’s savings. They couldn’t pay rent for a year and faced eviction. So when her sister stumbled upon an ad seeking surrogates in 2012, Wassana didn’t hesitate. “I thought that any parents who would spend so much money to get a baby must want him desperately,” she says. “The agent told me it was for a foreign couple.” She assumed it was customary to keep the biological parents’ identities confidential. In a country where deference to authority is expected — especially for poor, uneducated women — she didn’t probe. She wondered, though, who the baby’s mother was. “I don’t know if the doctor used my eggs or another woman’s,” she says. “Nobody told me.”

They were not managed to bring the ashes or body of Wiartini to funeral home. It was revealed when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Malaysia Airlines already came secretly to the funeral home of Ketut Wiartini, Friday (Aug 29). Komang Wikariyasa, younger brother of Ketut Wiartini, at his residence at Tukad Ampel hamlet, Kubutambahan village, said that
he was disappointed after hearing the two representatives. Results of the waiting period with family ended nil because the body or ashes of Wiartini failed to be taken home for further ritual procession. “They came here to apologize for having missed so that my sister was already buried there,” he told Bali Post, Monday (Sep 1). From the information given to the family, the body of Wiartini could have been identified and directly buried in the Netherlands. In the previous meeting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the RI and the representatives of Malaysia Airlines,

Based on the information received by relatives and colleagues of the deceased Wiartini in the Netherlands, the decision of burial in the Netherland was made on the request of her son. So, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Netherland could not prevent it and could not bring the body to Bali. “Now, we have to give her up. Actually it can still be negotiated. In other words, if one’s home is disturbed, the owner may get angry. So, let her be peaceful there. Besides, it was also the request of her son to bury his mother in the Netherlands,” he said. But his objectives will be clouded by the West’s inability to halt the Russian aggression in Ukraine that has stoked fears in other former Soviet republics. Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to only be increasing his provocations in the lead-up to Obama’s trip to Estonia for meetings with Baltic leaders and to Wales for a NATO summit. While Obama has warned that Putin could face more economic penalties, he also continues to resist calls for the U.S. to provide military support to help Ukrainian forces push back the Russian incursion. The president’s response to the Ukraine crisis is just one element of a broader foreign policy approach that is drawing criticism from both opponents and allies who fear the White House is being too tentative in the face of global threats. “I think Putin has sized up the West and figured that the most difficult sanctions against Russia and the arms necessary for the Ukrainians to be able to defend themselves

NEW YORK— The latest banks are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Startups, such as Moven and Simple, offer banking that’s designed specifically for smartphones, enabling users to track their spending on the go. Some things haven’t changed. Like traditional banks, customers open a checking account, get a debit card and are able to make check deposits and pay their bills. Like many Internet banks before them, they have no maintenance or overdraft fees, there are no physical branches and depositing cash is a challenge. What makes Moven and Simple different is their apps. Every time a debit card is swiped at
a store, a notification is sent to the phone letting the user know how much was spent and how much money is left in the account. “It makes them mindful of what they spend,” says Alex Sion, president and co-founder of Moven, comparing it to fitness activity trackers. “What Fitbit and Nike Fuel does for your health, we do for your wallet.” Both services automatically categorize purchases to provide an overview of what was spent on groceries, dining out or other areas over time. With Simple, users can set goals, such as saving up for a new bike, and the app will show how much needs to be saved every day to meet that goal.
Moven and Simple say most of their users are between the ages of 25 and 36, an age group that is often ignored by bigger banks who are more concerned with customers who have more money in their accounts. Portland, Oregon-based Simple, says it has more than 100,000 customers. Moven, which is based in New York, declined to say how many customers it has. The two companies make money from fees merchants pay every time customers swipe their debit card. The accounts are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, but Moven and Simple don’t actually hold the money that customers deposit. Moven, which launched for public use in March,
partners with CBW Bank which holds the deposits. Simple, which was acquired by Spanish bank BBVA earlier this year, partners with The Bancorp Bank for its deposits. The two services are not for everyone. Neither one of them offer savings accounts. But both Moven and Simple say that they may be offered in the future. Neither mobile bank lends money, so those seeking personal loans or a credit card need to look elsewhere. But no-frills banking is enough for some. John Carr opened a Simple account in 2012 when the service was still in being tested by a small group of customers. He quickly closed his
accounts at Bank of America where he was getting charged overdraft and ATM fees. He keeps a savings account at a military bank in Texas. Carr, 35, has his pay sent directly to his Simple account. To pay his rent, he uses Simple’s bill pay function to send a paper check to his oldschool landlord every month. When he wanted to save $1,600 for a new laptop, he used the app to come up with a six-month budget. The app also made him realize he was spending too much on fast food and gas. So he cut down on eating out and now rides the subway to get to his information technology job at a Los Angeles movie studio. “It’s saved me so much,” says Carr.

NEGARA - After the fire incident afflicting to dozens of kiosks and stalls in Pekutatan public market, Friday night (Aug 29), trading activities in the market has not recovered yet. Some traders whose stall and space engulfed by the fire are still traumatized as they found their location and goods totally burned out. Until Monday (Sep 1), debris of the buildings still littered. Dozens of traders lost their merchandise and space to do selling. Some of them are still shocked due to the incident. Surely it will take long time to recover their business. One of the security guards of the market met last Monday revealed that previously the market was also on fire in 1991. A total of 8 stores, 12 kiosks and 11 stalls burned out. They were all located in the western block of the Pekutatan public market. Subdistrict head of Pekutatan, Ketut Eko Susila, when met on Monday said the greengrocers and canang sellers whose kiosk was on fire were temporarily relocated to location of
the night market on the north side. Based on data collection, he said there were dozens of stalls burned out along with stall P and stall O. A total of 21 stalls were completely on fire. “They burned out with merchandise. The most serious incident afflicted the stalls in the market,” he explained. For the time being, the market only left the building debris and they would be cleaned up through mutual assistance. According to him, the subdistrict and Pekutatan village officers would ask for help to local Military Region Command to clean up the market debris. For short term, the regional enterprise (Perusda) and Jembrana Industry, Trade and Cooperative Agency would build shanties to accommodate the traders whose kiosk and stall were on fire. “As planned, it will be built in front area as temporary shanty,” he added. According to this officer from Bangli, the evidence had also been secured including wires and chipped copper cables and the ashes of the burned stuff. The findings indicated if the cables did not comply with the standard and were installed by the traders, not by the installer of PLN. As a result, the connector did not get plugged firmly into the socket. Besides, it was also found many cables connected to bulb fitting and large cables. Necessarily, one block used one MCB, but in fact, some blocks only used one MCB. According to Sudarma Putra, the fire incident occurred at the Pekutatan market began from stall P, kiosk 17 and kiosk 18 belonging to Gusti Putu Artawan that sold fabrics. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — The FBI said Monday it was addressing allegations that online accounts of several celebrities, including Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, had been hacked, leading to the posting of their nude photographs online. The agency did not say what actions it was taking to investigate who was responsible for posting naked photos of Lawrence and other stars. Apple said Monday it was looking into whether its online photo-sharing service had been hacked to obtain the intimate images.

Lawrence, a three-time Oscar nominee who won for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook,” contacted authorities after the images began appearing Sunday. Naked images purporting to be of other female stars were also posted, although the authenticity of many couldn’t be confirmed. The source of the leak was unclear. “This is a flagrant violation of privacy,” Lawrence’s publicist Liz Mahoney wrote in a statement. “The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence.” The FBI said it was “aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter.” “Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time,” spokeswoman Laura Eimiller wrote in a statement. “Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this,” Winstead wrote. The FBI has investigated previous leaks of nude celebrity images, including leaks involving Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Christina Aguilera and footage of television sports reporter Erin Andrews in a Tennessee hotel room. Those cases resulted in convictions.

DENPASAR - Aside from being flooded with foreign travelers, Bali also receives an abundance of products imported from various countries, especially China. The country has share of 63.71 percent of the total import value which reaches USD 21,473,353 in July 2014. The Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Panusunan Siregar, said the products imported into the Island of the Gods increased during this period. The increase in the import value was quite staggering, reaching 129.02 percent over the same period in the previous year reaching USD 9,376,131. This figure also increased 170.05 percent compared to June 2014 amounting to USD 7,951,572.
“Fortunately, the products brought into Bali were not food and textile products such as rice, meat, clothing or other vital products. So, they do not bring in negative impact for the economy,” said Panusunan Siregar. He explained that the main commodities imported to Bali included mechanical products, jewelry, essential oils, perfumery cosmetics, electrical appliances and
lime. Their respective percentage was 66.05 percent, 10.46 percent, 5.90 percent, 3.36 percent and 1.80 percent. “Those products include supporting tools, such as agricultural machinery, processor of raw materials and heavy equipment. On that account, we are actually benefited with these imports, as they can support the economy,” he said. He mentioned the cumulative imported goods of Bali province in July 2014 reached USD 183,948,093 or 70.53 percent increase compared to the condition of previous year reaching USD 107,871,130. “In addition to China, we also import some products from Thailand, Germany, Australia,
United States and Switzerland,” he said. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. IB Raka Suardana expressed that disruption of Indonesia was not only in terms of security, but also a threat to the cultural assets in the form of culture and local products having faced the free trade. Moreover, the younger generation of this nation preferred to use imported products and was ashamed of using domestic products. Actually, loving Indonesian products could reflect how great the love of people in this nation was. “Apparently, young people do not feel guilty when putting on or consuming imported products. Even, they have a different kind
of pride when using imported products. In the matter of fashion products, our young generation does not feel guilty when showing off that what they wear is other’s product,” he said. To that end, he said there should be a mindset change in the community when wishing to increase the use of domestic products. “Who should start?
