Zac Efron to star in rom-com “Are We Officially Dating?” Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Zac Efron has signed on to star in the romantic comedy “Are We Officially Dating?” for Treehouse Pictures. Tom Gormican will direct the film from his own screenplay about three friends in New York City who make a pact to remain single just as they each start to fall in love. The film will start production this fall in New York. Treehouse Pictures’ Justin Nappi and Kevin Turen are producing the film with Scott Aversano and Andrew O’Connor. QED International is handling international sales. “We strongly believe in the global appeal of this project and we’re excited to work with the team at Treehouse Pictures to bring it to market in Toronto,” QED International CEO Bill Block said in a statement. The film is the latest addition to QED’s growing sales slate as it heads into the fall markets. At Toronto and AFM, QED will

be handling international sales for a number of upcoming films, including “Haunt,” written by Andrew Barrer and directed by Mac Carter; “Ten” directed by David Ayer and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; and “Fading Gigolo,” directed by John Turturro and starring Turturro and Woody Allen. Treehouse Pictures’ “At Any Price,” starring Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron and directed by Ramin Bahrani, is premiering at the 2012 Venice International Film Festival and has been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics. I Wayan Putra, the farmer group head of Batudawa Kaja right beneath the Mount Agung protected forest on fire on Saturday (Sep 1) revealed that he and other residents had felt irritating to the eyes. Allegedly, the eye irritation was caused by smog accompanied with ashes of the forest fires on the mountains in the west of Batudawa Kaja settlement. The smog and ash were blown by strong winds and some

had reached the residential areas scattered at the foot of the mountain. “I think this eye irritation is only felt by me and excessive heat is unlike the usual heat in Kubu. It is hotter and I think it happens due to forest fire in the western area above our village. In fact, the other residents also feel the same,” said Putra. He asked the Karangasem and Bali Government to pay attention

Putra asked the government to socialize or make sustainable program to enhance the

public awareness around the forest and at the foot of Mount Agung so that no one would carelessly throw fire if they searched for honey bee, or deliberately burned shrubs, dry grasses and crop residues in their field. It was to prevent the forest fire happening again and again. Putra did not quite believe if the hotspots of forest fires originated from the friction between the tree branches or twigs. He alleged it was kindled by fire remains of honey bee seekers or someone intentionally burned the grasses and then the fire continued to spread out to the top because of strong winds constantly and strongly blew in this season. A party of alcoholic drink belonging to self-mixed arrack claimed three lives on the celebration of Manis Galungan, Thursday (Aug 31). One of the victims on behalf of Ristana, 27, died at his home at 11:30 p.m. local time on the following day. Meanwhile, Wayan Mundra, 35, died on Saturday (Sep 1) at 09:00 a.m. The victim died after passing through a critical phase in Sanglah Hospital. Wayan Sujana aka Panji, 35, who had been working as a driver, was in critical condition on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. in Sanglah Hospital and finally died, too. Therefore, the total death due to arrack party at Katung village, Kintamani, reached 3 people.

Every dry season at Subak Peh, Kaliakah Village, tens hectares of rice fields go to sleep as water shortage is happening moreover its water well has its machine damaged and can’t be used the past year as seen on Friday (31/8). The rice fields were ignored with cracking soils can be seen. With one water well remaining functioning, it won’t fulfill the three way watering. Head of Subak Peh, I Ketut Kaler, stated the 88 hectares of rice fields had most of it like this coming dry seasons yet few were planted chili trees. Even so, the chilies won’t grow maximal with only little water around so it depends on luck too. According to Kaler, there were two water wells yet only one functioned. Before the dry season, the farmers were able to get water from the water well although it doesn’t cover the whole rice fields. “It is only able to water the south part only,” Kaler stated. This situation have caused many complains especially for the damaged well to be fixed. Besides that, they also demanded for one more water well so it filled the three way rice fields. It was revealed after a total of 35 people felt to have joined the drinking party and asked to check their health

by medical team from the Kintamani 6 Health Center led by Ni Wayan Gunastri assisted by 3 medical staff. The drink belonging to arrack type was allegedly self-mixed with other unknown substances. However, a number of victims claimed if the arrack was mixed with Pepsi Blue and Ginseng. The victim I Wayan Mundra previously seemed in good health. Even, the day after the party he still managed to do his

daily activities. The victim just showed a symptom of alcoholic poisoning the day after the party and was immediately rushed to hospital before he was finally declared dead. Before self-mixing, the arrack drink was purchased by victim from a number of stalls at Katung village. The traders included I Wayan Gawan aka Kancut, 35, Ni Wayan Jasmin aka Mrs. Kardana and Luwes. His party had also secured the remaining drink consumed by the victims with the result indicating 5 percent of arrack content added to other impure and unknown substance. Evidence that had been secured from the stall of I Wayan Gawan consisted of 1.5 bottles of unmixed arrack, a bottle of Pepsi Blue, 5 bottles of reddish arrack and 0.5 bottle of reddish arrack (as informed by Gawan) that had been mixed with ginseng and Pepsi Blue. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BOSTON — A new underwater explorer hit the seas this summer, armed with cameras, strobes and sonar and charged with being a protector of sorts to a half-billion dollar resource — the Atlantic scallop catch. The stainless steel Seahorse, which gets its nickname from its s-shaped silhouette, traces its roots to a conversation a decade ago between a biologist and a fisherman who was seeking a better way to track the scallop population. This summer, the instrument was towed over miles of seafloor, from Virginia to Cape Cod, taking millions of images and capturing details about marine life and the ocean floor that stretched beyond just the number of scallops. The Seahorse revealed previously unseen ocean topography, predators stalking prey, and even the furrows

left where fishing gear was pulled along the bottom. Marine scientists just don’t get this kind of look into the darkness on the ocean floor, said Dvora Hart, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration mathematical biologist who leads the federal sea scallop assessment. “We’ve been kind of blind before having this type

of information,” Hart said. The Seahorse is the fourth version of HabCam, an instrument originally created to better count scallops. Former scalloper Richard Taylor had seen scallop industry’s worst times around 1994, when the prime fishing areas were closed to protect depleted groundfish and scallop populations.

But by 1996, scientists discovered that areas that had been shut down to protect certain fish species were rich with scallops. The industry has been thriving since the late 1990s, after regulators installed a plan to cut down fishing days and rotate fishing between different areas, to allow the stock to replenish in untouched regions. Last year, the Atlantic sea scallop catch was worth $580 million in revenues, and the industry’s best-known port of New Bedford has been the nation’s top fishing revenue port for 11 years running. Back around 2002, Taylor knew things were going well, but also

knew how quickly they can go bad. He was particularly concerned about the inefficiency of the primary method for sampling scallops for use in population estimates — using a dredge to scoop them up. A dredge misses varying percentages of the scallops it goes over, and Taylor worried the flawed information could eventually lead to the overfishing or underfishing that can drag down the resource and the fishermen. Taylor talked with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution biologist Scott Gallager, whom he had worked with on scallop issues. “We need a better tool,” he told Gallager.

9,500-Year-Old ‘Cultic’ Figurines Found in Israel

Archaeologists have uncovered two 9,500year-old cultic figurines in excavations just outside of Jerusalem, the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) reported Wednesday (Aug. 29). Found at the Tel Moza archaeological site, one of the Neolithic figures is a limestone ram with precisely carved spiral horns. “The sculpting is extraordinary and precisely depicts details of the anima’s image,” the IAA excavators said in a statement about the ram, adding that “the head and the horns protrude in front of the body and their proportions are extremely accurate.” The other is a more abstract sculpture of a wild bovine fashioned from dolomite, according to the IAA. Both are about 6 inches (15 centimeters) long. Archaeologists believe these objects might have had cultic importance for the people who created them. The animal figurines were found near the remains of an ancient round building, dating back to a dynamic time in the region’s history when humans were transitioning from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to one of farming

and settling in villages. “It is known that hunting was the major activity in this period,” Hamoudi Khalaily, co-excavator of the site for the IAA, said in a statement. “Presumably, the figurines served as good-luck statues for ensuring the success of the hunt and might have been the focus of a traditional ceremony the hunters performed before going out into the field to pursue their prey.” Khalaily added that the archaeological evidence from this time period, called the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, including these animal figurines, “teaches us about the religious life, the worship and the beliefs of Neolithic society. However, archaeologist and excavator Anna Eirikh thinks the artifacts may have been associated with the process of animal domestication; the process of plant and animal domestication occurred during this time period. Excavations at Tel Moza are taking place ahead of the expansion of Highway 1, the main road connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

DENPASAR - Bali`s Aids Controlling Commission (KPA) said around 500 pregnant women in Bali carry HIV/AIDs every year. A Commission chairman Prof I Dewa Nyoman Wirawan said here on Saturday a survey showed that 1 percent of around 50,000 pregnant women every year in Bali are infected by HIV/AIDs . Dewa Nyoman blamed husbands who have the tendency to change sexual partners for the transmission of the deadly disease to their wives at home. The transmission of the disease did not stop at the wives but the babies in their wombs would also be infected, he said. The possibility of the fetus being infected by the diseases from and infected mother is high, he said. It was told before that the 6th part of the Gajah Mada Street arrangement project involved creating paving through the whole road yet has to be stopped for a while due to Eid celebration as most of the workers are Muslims. After it was promised to continue the work by 24th August yet up to 31st August nothing was done yet. The project itself has covered 44.4 percent instead of the targeted 25 percent for that DTRP is not worried. MANGUPURA - The Tourism Industry Association of Indonesia (GIPI) of Bali assessed the development of non-star hotel accommodation in Bali has been uncontrollable. Bali as a world tourist destination should have a quality tourist accommodation inspired by cultural tourism. “Bali requires five-star hotel. However, the uncontrollable competition is now happening in the three-star hotels and under, city hotel and others. In places where the hotel development is not allowed have been filled with hotels,” said Chairman of GIPI Bali, Ngurah Wijaya. According to him, the uncontrollable development of three-star hotels and under as well as city hotel had resulted in the economic bubbling and price hike of land, but the profits earned from the investment was not comparable. To that end, Bali had to develop quality tourism. “Bali tourism must be qualified by consistently holding the cultural tourism. It is not a man- made tourism or the tourism made by human itself,” he said. He said that Bali tourism should change the paradigm of mass travel to segmented tourism. The development of segmented tourism would boost the Bali’s economy growth in the whole. “The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has developed

7 segmented tourisms such as spa tourism, spiritual tourism, sport tourism and others. With such segmented tourism, the tourism development can be enjoyed equally,” he said. To be noted, the total growth in the number of hotel rooms in Bali as of 2009 reached 46,000 and then in 2011 has showed an increase of 16,000 rooms or totally reached 62,000. Transmission tower collapses, residents ask for compensation

Sluggish handling against disaster of the collapsing four high voltage transmission towers at Penarukan village, Kerambitan, continued to flow. Victims whose homes were toppled over by the electrical cable regretted the contractor that did not immediately make a rescue effort. Such condition triggered the emotion of residents as revealed by Ketut Giri Gunadi, 40, the victim whose house was almost toppled over by the cable. Otherwise, the family’s house would certainly break down as hit by the cables. Aside from Gunadi, a number of farmers also complained because the cables hampered their access leading to their farmland as happened at Sudimara village. As a result, farmers should turn when they were going to rice field. Other residents were forced to walk because their vehicle was blocked by the transverse cables. Headman of Penarukan, Made Arta Sedana, also urged the contractor to take quick evacuation, especially uplifting the cables collapsing on top of the house. The cable network had made people easily angry and their emotion was even easily provoked. “Ideally, the contractor takes quick action and do not let people get angry. Their compensation should be disbursed immediately,” he requested. As reported previously, four transmission towers at Penarukan, Kerambitan and Sudimara village, Tabanan, collapsed. Such incident was triggered by the collapse of cable rope implanted in the farmland of Sudimara. A house was damaged and a number of shrines were hit by the cable network. Meanwhile, the Manager of Unit Implementation Construction of PLN Bali, Nursuciono, ascertained that his party would provide compensation to people whose house was affected by the disaster. He also reprimanded the contractor and gave a deadline to immediately rescue and make evacuation efforts. This official confirmed that such incident happened due to natural factors. Another complaint was the large cable virtually broke down the house roof and family shrines. “I was forced to make a bamboo buffer so that the cable did not topple over the house and shrine,” he said on Saturday (Sep 1). The man also complained about the cables breaking down the house roof of his brother, Made Sudiartika, and it was not immediately evacuated. Emotion of Gunadi peaked when he saw a number of workers tidying up the collapsing transmission tower not far from his home. With his anger, he reprimanded the workers. They were asked to remove the cable breaking down his family’s home. “Why should you handle this tower first? Look at our homes and shrines, they virtually collapsed as hit by the cable,” he said. According to Gunadi, his party had been patient enough to wait for the evacuation by the contractor. However, the contractor seemed to ignore the safety of his family. Protest of Gunadi was then responded. A number of workers moved directly toward the house of his family affected by the cables. Other than being sluggish, Gunadi also questioned about the compensation due to such incident. According to him, the collapse of transmission tower and cable had slightly disturbed his family, chiefly regarding the ritual that should be organized after the incident. “The damage to the house roof is not too much, but the expensive one is the post-incident ritual. Until now, there has been no compensation at all,” he protested. He hoped the contractor could immediately provide compensation as well as evacuate the tower and cables extending across his family’s home. Luckily, added Gunadi, there was a coconut tree shoring up the collapsing cables.

While New Orleans streets were bustling again and workers were returning to offshore oil rigs, thousands of evacuees couldn’t return home to flooded low-lying areas of Louisiana and more than 400,000 sweltering electricity customers in the state remained without power. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service said two tornadoes touched down in rural areas of north-central Illinois and at least two touched down in rural southeast Missouri. There were no reports of damage in Illinois, and Missouri officials said

some power lines caught on fire. The weather service said the storm would bring some drought relief to parts of the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys. By midday Saturday, it had dumped up to 5 inches of rain in parts of Illinois and between 4 and 6 inches in parts of Missouri. In Louisiana, the number without power was down from more than 900,000. However, in heavily populated Jefferson Parish near New Orleans, parish president John Young said Entergy Corp. was too slow in restoring electricity.

“I don’t see boots on the ground,” said Young, who complained that he has seen repair trucks sitting idle in a staging area and fielded calls from residents and business owners complaining about a lack of progress. “We’ve restored about 45 percent of our customers in about a day and a half, Entergy spokesman Chanel Lagarde said Saturday. He added that crews have come in from 24 states. “In many situations, crews have driven all day and have worked their 16-hour day and have to rest for the day.” As of Saturday night, the company was reporting about 270,000 outages, most in Jefferson and Orleans parishes. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said he too was eager to get power back on. “Like everybody else, my patience is wearing thin,” he said.

Queen Elizabeth attended the Highland Games at Braemar in Scotland alongside Prince Philip, who was making his second public appearance since being hospitalised last month. Organisers had feared Philip, 91, would not be able to attend after he spent five nights in hospital in Aberdeen receiving treatment for a recurrence of a bladder infection before being discharged on August 20. The royal family make an annual outing to the Braemar Gathering, a short distance for their summer residence at Balmoral where Philip has been recuperating. Philip defied the cold and damp conditions to accompany the queen, who is patron of the Games, to watch a series of traditional events including caber-tossing, hammer-throwing and the tug of war. Philip had first been admitted to hospital with the infection in June, forcing him to miss the end of the diamond jubilee celebrations. With an estimated 25.254 million unemployed across the full European Union, which also includes non-euro heavyweights Britain and Poland, and annualised inflation also rising to 2.6 percent in August according to a separate Eurostat release, the figures had analysts warning of ever-tighter household spending acting as a further drag on governments’ hopes of recovery. The stark jump in dole queues added to fuel-price rises at the root of the renewed climb for inflation “supports the view that the downturn in household spending will intensify in the second half of this year,” said London-based Capital Economics’ Ben May. The news emerged as the International Labour Organisation warned of a “catastrophic” rise in unemployment, especially among the young, if debt-wracked Greece were to leave the eurozone or if the bloc were to split. “It would be a catastrophe for the European youth,” Ekkehard Ernst, a senior economist at the UN body, told a German daily, warning that close to one in 10 would be without a job even in

WASHINGTON - US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke expressed deep worry over the US economy and unemployment Friday, sending a strong signal that he wants the central bank to take fresh action to stimulate growth. Warning that stagnation in the labor market was “a grave concern,” Bernanke defended the Fed’s interventions of the past four years and signaled he would be pushing for more help for the economy when the Fed’s policy board meets in 12 days. “The economic situation is obviously far from satisfactory,” he said in the keynote speech of the Fed’s annual conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “Growth in recent quarters has been tepid, and so, not surprisingly, we have seen no net improvement in the unemployment rate since January,” he said. “Unless the economy begins to grow more quickly than it has recently, the unemployment rate is likely to remain far above levels consistent with maximum employment for some time.” Bernanke made clear that the jobless rate, stuck around 8.3 percent, the sharp fall in labor market participation in the past four years, and long-term joblessness are some of his biggest worries. “The stagnation of the labor market in particular is a grave concern not only because of the enormous suffering and

waste of human talent it entails, but also because persistently high levels of unemployment will wreak structural damage on our economy that could last for many years,” he said. In a firm statement, Bernanke said the Fed will take additional action “as needed” to strengthen growth and boost job creation. Markets liked the news, with oil prices climbing steadily and the S&P 500 index ending 0.51 percent higher. Bond prices climbed sharply too, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury bond falling to 1.56 percent from 1.62 percent Thursday. Bernanke, whose easy money policies have been criticized by conservative politicians including Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, delivered a lengthy defense of the Fed’s actions since the financial crisis. He said that efforts to drive down long-term interest rates through “quantitative easing” (QE) bond purchase operations and other programs had boosted economic output by three percent and added more than two million jobs “relative to what otherwise would have occurred. He warned, as he has over much of the past year, that Fed action is not a panacea for policy action from political leaders. Besides heavy spending cuts by federal and local governments, he said the economy has been held back by partisan battles over raising the debt

ceiling and the looming “fiscal cliff” policy -- a poison-pill budget law from last year that could force a sharp contraction in the economy beginning on January 1 if not changed. “Policymakers should take care to avoid a sharp near-term fiscal contraction that could endanger the recovery,” Bernanke said. Economists said Bernanke’s comments raised the likelihood that he could garner support for fresh action in the Federal Open Market Committee’s September 12-13 meeting -- whether more firm signaling of Fed intent on keeping interest rates low over the next few years, or a third QE program. “The Fed chairman’s Jackson Hole speech was clearly consistent with more Fed easing, although not definitive,” said Jim O’Sullivan of High Frequency Economics. “At a minimum, we expect officials to extend their forward guidance on the near-zero funds rate at the September meeting, with a slightly better than 50 percent chance that a new asset purchase program -- i.e. QE3 -- will be announced then as well,” O’Sullivan said. Not all were as bullish, noting the resistance to a QE3 in the FOMC and the still-mixed signals from data. “We continue to anticipate a ‘verbal easing’ through extension of the Fed funds guidance, but do not anticipate quantitative easing at this juncture,” said Joseph LaVorgna of Deutsche Bank.

An ancient shrine found on peak of Bukit Puun Bali Post

TABANAN - An ancient shrine was found by residents of Soka customary village, Senganan, Penebel. The shrine resembling stone piles of threemeter high was found when local residents were widening the road leading to Bukit Puun temple on August 12. A number of strange occurrences began the discovery of the sanctum. To purify it, local residents organized an acknowledgement and exorcism ritual on Friday (Aug 31). Such ancient shrine is located 15 meters from the shrines of Bukit Puun temple. Allegedly, the sanctum is a relic of the kings in Bali. It is believed to have been hundreds of years because its condition has been mossy and overgrown by shrubs. It is oval and looks like a phallus of Shiva. Discovery of the shrine began when residents made a road project to location of the temple, as well as expanded the courtyard of Bukit Puun temple. When clearing the forest near the temple shrine, one of the temple priests encountered a large towering stone. Seeing such infelicity, the temple priest informed the other residents. After the discovery, the temple priest was directly trembling and speechless. He was getting fine after performing a ritual at location of the shrine discovery. Another strange incident was the priest of Bukit Puun Temple, Jro Mangku Wayan Arsana, fell down when riding motorbike with other resident to the Bukit Puun temple. As a result, the hand of the elderly man was swollen. Strangely,

he immediately recovered when planning a ritual at location of the shrine discovery. “This ancient shrine is believed to have been hundreds of years old. However, it was just found two weeks ago when residents were clearing the forest for widening the courtyard of Bukit Puun temple,” said senior figure of Soka customary village, Nyoman Sirta, accompanied by the priest of Merajapati temple, Putu Adnyana, amidst the ritual last Saturday. More strangely, when residents were measuring the location of shrines, they accidentally used a bizarre way resembling a circle of swastika. With such measure, the ancient shrine was eventually encountered. He explained that based on a spiritual vision, the ancient shrine was closely related to the shrines of Bukit Puun temple. It was believed the ancient shrine was used to venerate the deity from Mount Semeru, Lumajang, East Java, while the Bukit Puun temple was used to venerate his son. “So, this ancient shrine is the main and older

one. It is the abode of the deity from Mount Sumeru Agung, Lumajang,” affirmed Sirta. Based on the history and spiritual vision, added Sirta, the deity abiding in the ancient shrine was assigned to Bali. His assignment was to help the king, especially in Tabanan, maintain the prosperity. Previously, when the king would organize a melasti (purificatory rite to source of water) to Tanah Lot he had to involve the deity from Bukit Puun. Otherwise, the sea water at Tanah Lot would never subside. Until now,

such tradition is still carried out. On that account, the Bukit Puun Temple is closely related to Tanah Lot Temple. Even, the son of deity at Bukit Puun married with one of the daughters of the deity of Tanah Lot. The shrine of Bukit Puun is also associated with Lake Tamblingan and Ulun Siwi Batu Lumbung as a symbol of farmer prosperity. To reach the ancient shrines, it is required a bitter struggle. From Soka customary village, the pilgrims should walk down a fairly steep gravel road and it will take

about 2 hours. As planned, the ancient shrines will be made the main shrine in the Bukit Puun temple. Now, local customary villagers are preparing a development in the temple. One of them is clearing the forest around the location as well as paving the way leading to the temple. “Hopefully, the road to the temple can soon be paved or covered by concrete so that the construction of the ancient shrine can be accomplished,” said the development committee, Nyoman Suartawan. A television channel chief and presenter denied calling for the murder of President Mohamed Morsi when his trial on incitement charges opened in the Egyptian capital on Saturday. “I merely criticised President Morsi,” Tawfiq Okasha told judges at the court appearance, an AFP journalist reported. “This is a political trial. The team went up to the slopes and approached the hotspots at Kedampal hamlet, Datah village, Abang subdistrict, Karangasem. From this village was the closest distance to hotspots covered within two hours journey or tens of kilometers away from the end of the road at Kedampal hamlet or Puseh Temple of Kedampal. The team attempted to extinguish the fire with pot luck such as leafy tree branch. Unfortunately, the fire could not be extinguished and until the afternoon the thick smokes remained to billow forth from the hotspots. There had been no attempt of using helicopter to pour down water or create artificial rain. The forest fire did not only shock the residents of Karangasem, but also people from other regions where they were asking information via SMS about the safety of Pasar Agung and Besakih Temple. Some people claimed to be surprised because the flames were extending from the top of mountain and going down to the foot of mountain rapidly. When the night was getting darker, the fire was seen to burn brightly and people thought it molten lava of the Mount Agung. Many children also were asking whether the Mount Agung erupted. DUBAI - Iran will hold a large-scale military drill involving all its air defense systems next month, an Iranian commander was quoted as saying on Saturday, one of a number of military simulations it has carried out this year. The air defense drill will include fighter jets and simulate emergency situations, said Farzad Esmaili, commander of the Iranian army’s air defense force, according to Iran’s English-language Press TV. The drill will include both the army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Esmaili said, and follows a series of large-scale military simulations such as the “Great Prophet 7” missile exercises in July. JAKARTA - Indonesian police are holding 50 Sri Lankan asylum-seekers in custody two days after they were found stranded and starving in a faulty boat drifting off Sumatra, a rescue official said on Saturday. Fishermen found the asylum seekers, who were trying to reach Australia, on Thursday on a boat with a broken engine and brought them ashore, National Search and Rescue Agency spokesman Gagah Prakoso told AFP. “They were starving and dehydrated, but have since been given food, water and medical attention. They are now in the custody of police in the town of Sikakap,” he said, adding that the asylumseekers were mostly men. The boat was found drifting near the Mentawai islands, a popular surfing destination around 100 kilometres (62 miles) from the western coast of Sumatra. It had left Sri Lanka more than

two weeks earlier, local rescue official Josafath Roberth Duka told Kompas daily, and its engine had broken down nine days before being discovered by the fishermen. The discovery happened as Indonesian rescuers scrambled to find 150 asylum-seekers, all believed to be Afghans, whose boat was destroyed some 24 hours before. Of that group, 54 were rescued, with the assistance of an Australian search team, and are also in the custody of Indonesian authorities. A search team continued to scour the ocean in a rescue boat Saturday to look for remaining victims or bodies, but by the late afternoon, none had been retrieved, Prakoso said. SOLO - Indonesian anti-terrorism forces killed two suspected militants both aged 19 in an armed raid that also left an officer dead after a shoot-out, authorities said on Saturday. “Two terror suspects were killed in Solo, central Java, on Friday night by the anti-terror police unit Detachment 88. One other was arrested,” national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told reporters. “They were armed and one of the police officers was also shot dead.” Police received a tip-off that the men were involved in the fatal shooting of an officer on Thursday night and were planning more attacks, said national police chief Timur Pradopo. Two weeks earlier, a grenade was also thrown at a Solo police post. “The men were behind three shootings before Friday’s and they

are part of a new group that has links to older terror networks in the area,” Pradopo said. “Both the men killed were 19 years old,” he told reporters in Solo. China firms to invest $8.6 billion in Indonesia smelters

JAKARTA - Three Chinese firms will invest up to $8.6 billion in Indonesian smelters, Jakarta’s industry minister said Thursday, as a ban on the export of raw minerals from Southeast Asia’s biggest nation looms. “Oriental Mining and Minerals Resources and Rui Tong Investment will invest $1.5 billion in direct reduced iron plants with a capacity of six million tonnes,” state-run news agency Antara reported Mohamad Hidayat as saying. “Beijing Shuangzhongli Investment Management will invest $7.1 billion in alumina refining plants with a production capacity of 1.8 million tonnes”, the minister added. The investment comes after a string of similar deals as China deepens its presence in Indonesia before the resource-rich nation implements a blanket ban on ore

LONDON - South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius began his London Paralympic campaign in scintillating fashion as he smashed the 200 metres T44 world record in his heat on Saturday. Pistorius ran 21.30, shaving more than half a second off the previous record set by Brazilian Alan Fonteles Cardoso Oliveira in an earlier heat. The 25-year-old, who is dubbed the ‘Blade Runner’, is defending the 100m, 200m and 400m Olympic titles he won in Beijing four years ago. Pistorius, who wears carbon fibre prosthetic blades after he was born without a fibula in both legs, became the first double amputee to run in the Olympics, where he made the 400 metres semi-finals. “I’m so happy to be back here This crowd is as awesome as they were a couple of weeks ago. I’m happy with the time and tomorrow is the big race and I am looking forward to that,” he told Britain’s Channel 4. “To be out here representing our country in such an amazing stadium is so amazing.”

The factory Honda MotoGP squad described the operation on the torn ligaments the reigning world champion sustained in a crash at Indianapolis as “successful”.
