Bali News Balanced carbohydrate intakes prevent obesity Denpasar (Bali Post)—

People tend to avoid carbohydrates when attempting to reduce their weight. In reality, the consumption of balanced carbohydrate can prevent obesity itself. According to a nutritionist, I.G.A. Ayu Dastini, everyone needed a carbohydrate intake of 60 percent to 70 percent of the calories they required. Meanwhile, calorie intake was composed of about 10-15 percent of protein and around 20 to 25 percent of fat. If one met these requirements in minimal activity, carbohydrate would burn out without stored as fat. If one consumed carbohydrate intake more than the ideal limit and with minimal activity the carbohydrate would be stored as fat. If such unhealthy diet patterns were continuously pursued, then the deposition of fat in the body would be getting more and more and turned obese. Meanwhile, obesity could lead to chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. As an example of a balanced intake of carbohydrates, Dastini de-

scribed, one with a 160 cm height should have ideal weight of 54 kg. Based on such ideal body weight could be determined the Basal Metabolic Rate (MBR). “Ideal body weight is multiplied by 24, so that if one’s ideal weight is 54 he or she would have BMR at 1,296 calories,” said Dastini. Ideal carbohydrate necessity was 60 to 70 percent of carbohydrate intake. Based on this fact, the ideal carbohydrate intake for people with 54 kg height was about 700 calories. This result was then divided by four so that it will be obtained the value of 175 grams. Thus, the necessity of carbohydrate was 175 grams per day with minimal activity. “A shifted diet and the excessive portion of the carbohydrates will lead to obesity. So to remove the excessive fat people

should perform more activities or exercises,” said Dastini. Calculation of such calorie content was the same as that for diabetics. Most diabetics would limit their carbohydrate intake to reduce blood sugar levels within the body. “As a matter of fact, carbohydrate intake for people with diabetes is the same as normal people, namely about 60 to 70 percent. However, there is a slight difference for diabetics with complications,” explained Dastini. With the complication meant that if diabetes had hepatic complication, then foods with more protein content were increased. Conversely, if it had renal complication, foods containing protein should be reduced. Meanwhile, if complication went to the heart, foods containing fat should be diminished. (san)

Bali International Flight Academy (BIFA) stated that its trainer aircraft getting an accident in the rice field area of Blimbing Sari, Banyuwangi, was airworthy and in normal condition. Prior to flying, the aircraft belonging to Cessna 172 Skyhawk type made in the United States was mentioned to have undergone a mechanical inspection in accordance with the standard flight procedures. It was announced by Chief Executive Officer of BIFA, Wiradharma Bagus Oka, in the BIFA flight school located at Sumberkima Village, Grokgak subdistrict, last Wednesday (Sep 1). According to Wiradharma, the flight training last Wednesday started flying from Lieut. Col. Wisnu Airfield at around 7:00 am Local Time heading for Blimbingsari Airport, Banyuwangi. Inside the plane,

there were Captain Marryam Hogen, a U.S. citizen, who became the flight instructor and two BIFA’s students respectively Carol Ruwayeri and Adha Bala Putra. The flight from Lieut. Col. Wisnu airfield to Blimbing Sari Airport ran smoothly. After having a break at the airfield, they went back to doing the training. But after taking off at the altitude of 300 feet, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of engine power. As consequence, the flight instructor looked for a location of emergency landing field, namely in the area of paddy fields. According to him, since the landing area was wet rice field, the aircraft suffered from no significant damage. Flight instructor and two BIFA’s students inside the plane were safe and not seriously injured. They were all flown back

to Sumberkima directly and their health condition was immediately checked in the hospital. Though presumably the aircraft went through a loss of engine power, but the exact cause of the incident had not been concluded with certainty. BIFA itself was still waiting for the results of investigation conducted by the National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) to find out the precise cause of the flight incident. At that time, Wiradharma explained that everything of the Cessna 172 aircraft owned by BIFA was airworthy. As procedures, engine of every aircraft having flown for two thousand hours should be immediately replaced. Cessna 172 Skyhawk was made in the USA in 1968-1985 with the length of body of 8.21 meters and width of the wing span of 10.92 meters. The aircraft itself could accommodate three people.

WASHINGTON — On the eve of the first direct talks in nearly two years between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas , President Barack Obama welcomed the leaders to the White House on Wednesday and urged them to “recognize this as a moment of opportunity that must be seized.” Obama conceded that in the elusive quest for a peace deal that would end the 1967 Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip and create an independent Palestinian state, the United States “cannot want it more than the parties themselves . . . we cannot do it for them.” In late afternoon remarks from the Rose Garden, he told skeptics of the latest round of talks, “If we do not make the attempt, then failure is guaranteed.” Netanyahu and Abbas are going ahead with the talks despite the killing of four Israeli settlers near Hebron on Tuesday by the militant group Hamas in an apparent effort to derail the process. Regardless of the shooting, the prospects for a deal could wither if Israel follows through on allowing a moratorium on settlement construction to expire on Sept. 26 . Obama didn’t address the moratorium in his Rose Garden statement, which he gave after meeting individually with the leaders,

nor did he respond to shouted questions from reporters. He said that “if both sides do not commit to these talks in earnest, then the longstanding conflict will only continue to fester and will consume another generation, and this we simply cannot allow.” Earlier in the day, Obama met with Netanyahu, then Abbas, then King Abdullah of Jordan , then Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak . All were to participate in a closed-door working dinner in the Old Family Dining Room of the White House , along with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in his capacity as Middle East negotiator for the “Quartet” of diplomatic powers — the United States , the United Nations , the European Union and Russia . It was the “centerpiece of worry,” Mubarak’s spokesman, Soliman Awaad , told reporters. “Everybody’s

hoping this round of negotiations doesn’t come to a very near end” because Israel “doesn’t make the right decision on the 26th.” Awaad said Mubarak urged Israelis and Palestinians to seize the moment, and urged Obama to stay deeply engaged beyond simply launching the talks. “We hope it works this time. Because the peace process has had many ups and downs. It can hardly sustain another failure.” Netanyahu and Abbas are to open direct negotiations Thursday at the U.S. State Department . The two sides are expected to announce there that they will hold one, or possibly two, more meetings later this month, which will take place in the Middle East , most likely in Egypt . An Israeli diplomat said the Obama administration was working to postpone discussion of the settlement moratorium until later this month, so it does not abort the talks at the very outset. SYDNEY (AFP) – Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard won the support of a key independent MP on Thursday, leaving her close to breaking the worst political deadlock in decades after elections failed to produce a winner. Former Iraq war whistle-blower Andrew Wilkie said Gillard’s centre-left Labor party was most likely to deliver “stable” and “competent” government, an endorsement that put her within just two seats of a parliamentary majority. “I have judged that it is the Australian Labor Party that best meets my criteria that the next government must be stable, must be competent and must be ethical,” Wilkie told journalists in Canberra. Wilkie’s vote gives Gillard 74 seats in the 150-member lower house, just shy of an absolute majority of 76. But Tony Abbott’s opposition coalition remains firmly in the hunt with 73 seats and three independents still undecided. Tasmania’s Wilkie urged the three remaining “kingmakers” to make their move soon, following nearly two weeks of political paralysis after August 21 polls re-

turned the first hung parliament since 1940. “I hope that this sends a signal to the other three independents and they move as soon as they can to make their decisions,” he said. Rural MPs Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott, and cowboy hat-wearing maverick Bob Katter, have pledged to begin formal negotiations on Friday. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. South Korean high school students walk against strong winds caused by Typhoon Kompasu in Seoul cer stadium in Incheon, west of Seoul, stadium officials said. Power was out at more than 60,000 homes along South Korea’s west coast, officials said. Kompasu, the Japanese word for “compass,” landed on Ganghwa Island, about 40 miles (70 kilometers) west of Seoul, early Thursday morning, officials said. The Korean peninsula is expected to be rid of the typhoon by Thursday evening, but more than 80 millimeters (3 inches) of rain might fall in Seoul and the neighboring areas through Friday, according to the state-run Korea Meteorological Administration.

The typhoon also caused torrential rains and heavy gusts throughout North Korea, the country’s state media reported Thursday. It didn’t say whether the typhoon caused any casualties or damages. Last month, floods swamped farmland, houses and public buildings in the North’s northwestern city of Sinuiju and adjacent areas and displaced more than 23,000 people, according to figures by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Earlier this week, South Korea’s Red Cross offered the North relief aid worth 10 billion won (US$8.3 million).

Qantas engine blast ‘like fireworks’, say passengers AFP

SYDNEY (AFP) – Passengers on a Sydney-bound Qantas jet rocked by an exploding engine Thursday described how the plane felt like it had hit a “speed bump” and showered flames and sparks like fireworks. The Qantas Boeing 747-400 had to turn back to San Francisco about half an hour into Monday’s flight after an engine failed, blasting a large hole in its casing. Passengers among the 212 on board finally arrived in Sydney on Thursday, and told of their alarm when the engine gave way with a “loud thump”, sending rumbles through the aircraft.

“It was like the plane hit a speed bump,” one man told an ABC TV reporter at Sydney Airport. “The plane shuddered violently and passengers were quite concerned about what had happened,” added another. “Basically the plane shuddered to the left and there were quite a deal of flames coming out of the engine. Somebody likened it to a roman candle (firework) that extended from the wing right down to the end of the plane.” Crew members dashed to the front of the aircraft and worried children had to be soothed, a third man said. “We just told my son that they had to use special tools like daddy’s at home to repair the plane, and that we would get to Sydney to see the kan-

garoos and the aquarium,” he told ABC. Qantas, Australia’s national airline, said investigations were underway into the incident, which it described as “excessive vibration” in one of the plane’s four Rolls-Royce engines. Initial checks confirmed that the engine had failed, and a spokesman said there were a couple of “holes” in the casing. Transport safety officials from Australia and the United States are now looking into the matter. No one was injured and the aircraft landed back at San Francisco without incident, with the passengers taking a later flight.

The group sought weapons to be used in robberies as a source of financing for their training camp,” Nasir said. DENPASAR – The vice of Association of the Indonesia and Travel (Asita) Bali, Bagus Sudibya, proposed that the travel agents should be put on the investment black list so there will be no new permit for new travel agents. “Illegal travel agents are increasing highly and it is getting out of control. There’s a need of strong action to rearrange the number of travel agents in Bali,” he added. Sudibya said that the illegal travel agents will give bad image on the tourists and could ruin the development of tourism business in Bali. The government needs to collect the data and determine the preliminary steps. “There are some travel agents that have the permit but not active and the other way around. Many of the active travel agents don’t have the proper permit. We also will assist the government by conducting research of our

Cover and marinate in cool place for 2 hours. Place one salam leaf in center of each piece of banana leaf. Top with half of seafood mix and fold the same way as for Tum Bebek. Place parcels directly onto moderately hot charcoal and roast very slowly for one hour. Alternatively, bake on rack in a moderate oven or under a grill for about 30 minutes. BUSINESS Consumer bankruptcies fell 8 percent in August Reuters

BANGALORE – Bankruptcies filings by consumers fell 8 percent in August but still remained on track to top 1.6 million filings in 2010, according to a report by the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). “While monthly filings are volatile, consumer bankruptcies are still the highest they have been since Congress overhauled the bankruptcy law in 2005,” ABI Executive Director Samuel Gerdano said in the report. A total of 127,028 consumer bankruptcies were filed in August, according to the report.

Even though the number of filings fell in August compared with July, it increased 6 percent from the 119,874 consumer filings recorded in August 2009. Chapter 13 filings constituted 29 percent of all consumer cases in August, a slight increase from July, the report said. Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy

The U.S. sector expanded for a 13th straight month in August, coinciding with gains in Chinese manufacturing and auto sales. The news gave Wall Street a boost, with investors overlooking dismal reports on U.S. auto sales and construction spending. The Dow Jones industrial average closed 253 points up. China’s robust growth raises hopes that it will step up its consumption of U.S. exports and help sustain the U.S. economic recovery. “Companies that have established distribution capabilities in big markets such as China, India and Brazil are doing well,” said Brian Bethune, chief U.S. financial economist at IHS Global Insight. In the U.S., manufacturing has helped lead the economy out of the worst recession since the 1930s and factories kept churning out goods last month. The Institute for Supply Management said Wednesday that its manufacturing index rose to 56.3 in August from 55.5 in July. A reading above 50 indicates growth. The trade group’s index has surged since late 2009 and hit a six-year high in April. U.S. factories have seen rising demand for exports and from businesses that are investing in capital equipment and supplies. That has

given the economy a lift at a time of uncertainty for the recovery. Jobs are scarce, the unemployment rate is near double digits, home sales are at the lowest level in 15 years, and the American consumer is not spending enough to give businesses confidence to hire. European companies believe market-oriented reforms have stalled and Beijing’s treatment of foreign enterprises is becoming more unfair, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China said in a report. The complaints echoed criticism by American business groups that Beijing is improperly using regulation to promote its companies at the expense of foreign rivals in violation of market-opening pledges. Premier Wen Jiabao, China’s top economic official, responded in April to rising complaints by promising companies a “level playing field.” But business groups say Beijing has yet to repeal discriminatory measures and is moving ahead with other restrictions. “I do believe the words of Premier Wen when he says that foreign investment is welcome,” said the EU chamber’s president, Jacques de Boisseson, ahead of the report’s release. But he said some officials are “not welcoming foreign investment” and “would probably be satisfied with a lower level of foreign investment and a higher share for Chinese companies.” The EU chamber said Beijing has failed to keep pledges made when it joined the WTO nearly a decade ago to open its telecommunications market by setting up an independent regulator and giving

foreign companies equal access to broadcast spectrum. China also has failed to open its airline reservation market as promised and allow foreign competitors direct access to Chinese travel agents and airlines, the group said in an annual report on business conditions. Beijing has blocked access to its wholesale market for refined oil by requiring that distributors own at least 51 percent of an oil refinery, above the 49 percent that foreign investors are allowed to own, the group said. The identity of The Stig, the always-anonymous test driver on the popular television show “Top Gear,” has long been a closely guarded secret. On Wednesday, lawyers said the BBC had been refused an injunction blocking publication of a book revealing the identity of the character. Shortly after, publishers HarperCollins said in a statement that a 33-year-old racing driver named Ben Collins “has a great story to tell about his seven years as The Stig, which will appeal to a wide audience beyond just motoring enthusiasts.” Calling it a “victory for freedom of speech,” HarperCollins said the book will be published in Britain on Sept. 16. The white-suited Stig is the second in the role; the first Stig, who wore a black suit and helmet, was Perry McCarthy. He left the show in 2003 after his identity was re-

TORONTO - “No kite flying allowed,” reads a bright yellow sign in a Toronto park where the city’s South Asian community used to gather to practice the sport they introduced to the country. Kite flying is a favorite pastime of many local immigrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh as well as China. On weekends, they would bring their kites to the lush green 32-hectare park. Friends and families often joined them for a picnic or barbecue, and to bask in the sun. But for some kite flying is not the peaceful sport beloved of children around the world, rather it is a more serious game known as kite fighting which can involve dozens of teams and hundreds of kites. With highly trained teams, kites fitted with sharp nylon strings are launched into the air to slice through rival kites, with fights lasting from just a few minutes to a few hours. But the summer fun came to a crashing halt on August 17 when the ban was introduced, coupled with a 100 dollar fine for any violations.

Toronto councillor Chin Lee told AFP the city enacted the measure due to safety concerns, saying Milliken park was littered with pieces of sharp nylon kite strings that risked cutting people’s feet and strangling birds. “I received at least 100 complaints from people over last three years,” he said. The ban is to be reviewed in a couple of weeks. And dozens of protestors have pleaded with Lee, the main proponent of the ban, to overturn the measure and allow kites to soar again over Milliken Park. “Let us fly kites” and “Don’t ban kite flying, ban only synthetic string,” their colorful placards read at a recent rally. Lee, who is of MalaysianChinese heritage, showed up at the

rally holding rolled-up kite strings the size of baseballs in each hand, and voiced sympathy with their plight. “I myself have flown kites since I was a three-year-old kid,” he said. “The problem is not with the kites, the problem is with the kites’ strings,” he explained, saying strings were too often left on the ground after kite fighting matches littering the park. “People are still complaining. They send me emails.” “We need to sit down with all stakeholders and come up with a solution that works for everybody,” he said, promising to try to accommodate both kite flying enthusiasts from the largely ethnic Chinese and South Asian neighborhoods, and opponents. Ancient Australian reef raises hopes for coral as seas warm Agence France Presse

SYDNEY - Australian scientists Thursday said they had discovered a sprawling ancient reef in chilly southern waters which could hold new hope for the future of coral as sea temperatures rise. Researchers used high-resolution sonar and sophisticated drilling to find the fossil reef near a living coral site at Lord Howe Island, 600 kilometres (400 miles) off southeastern Australia — the world’s southernmost reef. Around 20 times the size of the modern reef, the fossil site flourished between 9,000 and 7,000 years ago, before perishing, it is thought, due to an abrupt rise in sea levels linked to melting of the Antarctic ice sheet. Lead researcher Colin Woodroffe said the discovery showed coral had once thrived in the southern waters and might do so again as climate change warms the seas, bleaching and destroying reefs further north. “As global temperatures warm, the reefs in the tropical areas are increasingly stressed, particularly by coral bleaching, and there’s been

some suggestions that reefs might be able to expand further towards the poles but not much evidence of that,” Woodroffe told AFP. “Our evidence here is that indeed there was a reef, at this limit, that was much more extensive, and that does look quite promising in terms of the opportunity for the reef to expand again.” Woodroffe, from the University of Wollongong, south of Sydney, said the research showed corals may be able to recolonise south as more tropical habitats became hostile and find “refuge” in reefs usually considered too deep for coral growth. His team will next take their search 26 kilometres south of Lord Howe Island to Ball’s Pyramid, a volcanic remnant that juts spectacularly from the ocean, to see if there was a similar reef there and explore why the fossil reef had perished. “We’d like to interpret why it is that that reef gave up in the past, (it’s) just a hypothesis at this stage that it was the speed of sea-level rise,” he said. “But it may be related to temperature changes in the past as well, that’s an alternative hypothesis.”

MANILA - Fifteen muscular gay men strut the stage in a whirlwind of sequins, feathers, gold and glitter while a transvestite dressed as Lady Gaga performs the American popstar’s latest hit. The scantily clad men are vying for the crown of “Mr Gay World Philippines” and Filipino-Arab fashion designer Sherwin Abuel wins the title in a crowded suburban Manila nightclub after wowing the judges on the catwalk. The contestants were required to compete in traditional pageant categories such as “Best in swimwear”, “Best in formalwear” and “Mr Congeniality”. But the contest was also about promoting equal rights, and Abuel

started his reign as Mr Gay with an expression of pride. “Being gay is not my choice. I was born with it and I love it,” said Abuel, 34, who will represent the Philippines when it becomes the first Asian country to host the annual Mr Gay World contest next year. The Philippines is a devoutly Catholic country but Abuel said he had never faced discrimination. Organisers of the Mr Gay World contest said this was one of the main reasons why the Philippines was chosen to host the global contest in March next year, after the first two events were held in Canada and Norway. The vice chairman of Mr Gay World Philippines, Mac Bordallo, pointed to conservative Muslim religious values in countries such as Malaysia as reasons for not hosting the

event there. He said efforts to establish a presence in China also failed last year when police stopped them from hosting a national Mr Gay contest. And while Bangkok may have a reputation for being Asia’s most gay-friendly metropolis, Bordallo said Manila was increasingly attracting the pink tourist dollar. “Foreigners have only known Thailand as a gay tourist destination, but this is changing”, Bordallo said. He said the Mr Gay World event was expected to bring in many more gay tourists, and organisers were already preparing packages to some of the country’s best destinations such as the tropical island of Borocay.

Loew demands win, Belgians hope for upset Agence France Presse

BERLIN - Germany face Belgium on Friday with coach Joachim Loew expecting three points from their opening Euro 2012 qualifier as the Germans look to build on the momentum from the World Cup. Loew’s young squad finished third in South Africa and having finished as runnners-up at Euro 2008, when they lost in the final to Spain, they are favourites to win Group A in qualification. Germany are without captain Michael Ballack, who has been dropped for the Brussels game and next Tuesday’s qualifier against Kazhakstan in Cologne, as he works his way back from the ankle injury which kept him out of the World Cup. Philipp Lahm will captain the side in Ballack’s absence, but the team will be close to full strength at the Roi Baudouin stadium, the only exceptions being injured defenders Arne Friedrich, Jerome Boateng and Dennis Aogo. Loew says while his side earned plenty of praise for their World Cup performances, it is now time to put the experience gained in South Africa to good use. “As nice as the praise for our performances at the World Cup was, a new chapter with interesting challenges is beginning,” said Loew. “Our goal must be to take six points from our first two games.” Germany are currently ranked fourth in the world, while Belgium are ranked 48th, behind Burkino Faso and Venezuela, and history

THE HAGUE - Holland coach Bert van Marwijk on Thursday reacted to criticism from Bayern Munich over Arjen Robben’s injury, insisting that he had been “very careful” with the winger at the World Cup. Bayern believe Robben could miss the rest of 2010 as he struggles to recover from a thigh problem he picked up playing for his country before the start of the World Cup. Although he played a major part in the Netherlands’ march to the final he now needs complete rest after aggravating the injury, prompting Bayern president Karl Heinz Rummenigge to demand this week compensation from the Dutch football federation. Marwijk, making his first comment on the issue, told local media: “I’ve heard that Arjen could be out for a long time. That’s a tough blow for him. I am there to support him in this difficult period. “I can’t comment on the injury, all I can say is that (at the World Cup) we were very careful with him. It’s a big mystery what’s happened to him.” Robben suffered a left thigh injury in Holland’s final prep match before leaving for South Africa, a 6-1 win over Hungary in Amsterdam on June 5. He had to sit out the Oranje’s first two World Cup games, before entering the World Cup fray and scoring two goals as the Dutch made it to the final where they went down 1-0 to Spain.

LONDON - Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is set to return from the knee injury that wrecked his World Cup after emerging unscathed from a reserve team outing on Wednesday. United reserve team boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer declared Ferdinand ready to make a first-team return after the defender came through the second string clash with Oldham. It was the first time Ferdinand had been in action since he suffered a major knee ligament injury in a freak collision with Emile Heskey on the first day of World Cup training with England in South Africa. The injury wrecked the 31-yearold’s hopes of captaining his country and also resulted in him missing the opening three games of United’s Premier League challenge, plus the start of England’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. However, it seems Ferdinand is now on track to face Everton at Goodison Park on September 11 after a typically stylish performance in the low-key arena of Bower Fold in Stalybridge. “Rio is always the same player,” said

NEW YORK – One woman’s exit from the U.S. Open was jarring and sudden. Another’s came off as sad and not all that surprising. Victoria Azarenka and Melanie Oudin said goodbye to Flushing Meadows in starkly different manners Wednesday — Azarenka, a concussion victim collapsing on the overheated court and Oudin a straight-set loser to a player who cared little about the 18-year-old’s dreams of a fairy tale repeat. All part of an anticlimatic day that ended with the loss of the highestranked American man, No. 9 Andy Roddick, who carried on a running argument with a lineswoman over a third-set foot fault, but couldn’t find the fire to overcome 44th-ranked Janko Tipsarevic. Tipsarevic used his big groundstrokes and 66 winners to quiet the crowd of nearly 23,000 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win. “He played very high-risk and executed for four sets,” Roddick said. “I kept telling myself, ‘You know, this has to have an expiration date on it.’ Unfortunately, I needed another set for that.” The Roddick loss was the big news of the evening session. Temperatures on the courts reached into the 100s, and for the second straight day, tournament officials put their extremeweather policy in effect, giving women the option of taking a 10-minute break if they split sets. “It’s tough to play out there,” Dulko said, before she knew it was a concussion that forced Azarenka out of the match. “It’s really hot, really humid.

You sweat so much, sometimes it’s impossible to hold the racket.” Heat didn’t have as much of an impact on Oudin as did nerves during her late-afternoon match in Armstrong Stadium, which by that time was covered in shadows. Last year, she took the city by storm, showing all that heart and grit en route to a surprising trip to the quarterfinals that made her as big a star at Times Square as she was on the stadium court. Since then, she has endured a more even-keeled year of learning — ranked 43rd in the world and with only one victory in the first three Grand Slam tournaments of 2010. She came back to New York wondering if something about this city and this tournament might inspire another run. She left with a disheartening 6-2, 7-5 loss to No. 29 Alona Bondarenko and the sinking realization that even in the Big Apple, encores can be hard to come by. “I guess I’m a little tiny bit relieved now,” Oudin said. “I can kind of start over from all the expectations from last year. And now I can just go out and hopefully do really well the rest of the year and keep working hard.”

LOS ANGELES - Manny Pacquiao says he believes Antonio Margarito tried to use illegal hand wraps in his last US fight which resulted in the Mexican boxer being banned from the sport for one year. Pacquiao scoffed Tuesday at Margarito’s explanation that he didn’t know his trainer was putting a plaster-like substance in his gloves prior to a 2009 fight against Shane Mosley. “He is just making some alibi,” Pacquiao said. The 31-year-old Filipino superstar Pacquiao is expected to face Margarito for the vacant World Boxing Council super welterweight title on November 13 in Dallas, Texas. “He is the one who wraps his hands and he doesn’t know what is in there?” Pacquiao asked. “Of course he knows. What do you think? My belief is he knows that.” Margarito was granted a license last week to fight in Texas. He hasn’t fought in America since the Los Angeles Mosley incident after his license — along with that of former trainer Javier Capetillo — was revoked by the California State Athletic Commission. The ban was upheld by other state boxing commissions. The two fighters held a joint news conference on Tuesday at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Margarito, who upset Miguel Cotto six months before the Mosley fight, has always insisted he had no knowledge of what his trainer was doing. “Everything that happened is now in the past,” said Margarito, who has 38 wins, six losses and 27 KOs. He

refused to comment Tuesday on Pacquiao’s latest claims. But his new trainer Robert Garcia and fight promoter Bob Arum both defended Margarito. Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38KOs) has asked officials to allow them to send an extra person from his camp into Margarito’s dressing room prior to the Dallas fight to observe the taping. “I am requesting that two people be allowed to watch them bandage his hands,” Pacquiao said. Garcia said he has nothing to hide. He said Pacquiao can visit Margarito’s dressing room before the fight. He would also let Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach do the wrapping. “Manny can come watch himself if he needs to,” Garcia said. “I do not have a problem with that. I could have Freddie Roach do the wrapping. I don’t do anything illegal. “I know very few people give us a chance.” It is unlike Pacquiao to fire the first verbal salvo in a pre-fight news conference but the Filipino did just that Tuesday. Pacquiao was all smiles and joking with Margarito during a photoop on the podium at the Beverly Hills Hotel but then told reporters afterwards that he doesn’t believe Margarito’s version of the events at Staples Center arena 19 months ago. His comments also contradicted Arum who spent a good portion of his time at the podium Tuesday defending his decision to put the Filipino in the ring with the disgraced boxer. Margarito still does not have a license to fight in California or Nevada. His most recent California application was denied.

NEW YORK – Sweltering conditions and gusting winds proved a handful at the US Open, but it was the consequences of a simple training stumble by Belarus starlet Victoria Azarenka that shocked fans. The 10th seed was 1-5 down in a second round tie against Argentina’s Gisela Dulka when she suddenly collapsed in a heap behind the baseline.

She received urgent medical treatment for several minutes before being taken away in a wheelchair to hospital for tests on her condition. With temperatures at Flushing Meadows once again soaring into the 90s Fahrenheit (30s Celsius), first indications were that she had fallen victim to the extreme conditions. But Azarenka later shed light on the incident by explaining in a statement that she had fallen in the gym prior to her match while running a

sprint and had stumbled forward, hitting her head and arm. “I was checked by the medical team before I went on court and they were courtside for monitoring,” she said. “I felt worse as the match went on, having a headache and feeling dizzy. Alonso admits a bad Monza would be ‘a hard knock’ for morale Double F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso has confessed that he is enthusiastic about the prospect of competing at Monza for the first time as a Ferrari driver next weekend – but off the back of the Spa-Francorchamps DNF that hit his chances of clinching a third drivers’ crown this year, he has conceded that another rough time of things in the Italian Grand Prix would represent ‘a hard knock for team morale’. Alonso returned from the annual mid-summer F1 break determined to close down and ultimately overturn the 20-point deficit separating him from the top of the title standings – but after making a mess of qualifying and subsequently being run into by Williams rival Rubens Barrichello on the opening lap of the Belgian Grand Prix, the Spaniard went on to choose the wrong tires in the changeable weather conditions and finally throw any chance of scoring potentially vital points into the tire barriers with barely a handful of laps to run, meaning he now lies some 41 markers adrift of championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Reflecting that it was far from the weekend he had been hoping for, the 29-year-old is adamant that he and Ferrari are now overdue a change of luck – particularly at the start of races, when his car has all-too-often seemed to be a magnet for trouble. “It was not the Belgian Grand Prix we were expecting, that’s for

sure,” he wrote in his official Ferrari blog. “I think the key moment in my race came on the very first lap. I had made a good start and made up a few places; the car was responding well and there was every chance of finishing up on the podium. Unfortunately, I had to come back to the pits almost immediately and that changed everything. I could have done without going off the track [towards the end], but it did not make a great difference – the rain meant that any chance I had of making up some places through our strategy evaporated. “It seems that this year, the opening laps have not gone too well for me. In five races out of 13, I have found myself slipping to the back, either because of our own mistakes or because of circumstances beyond our control, as was the case in Belgium. I have always said – and I repeat it now – that over the course of the season, good luck and bad luck tend to balance one another out, so

The whole team is working really hard, the guys are giving everything like always so hopefully we can have a good result to celebrate on Sunday.” Team-mate Nicky Hayden claimed his first Ducati front row start at Indy, but it counted for little after his knee slider was ripped off on a drain cover early in the race. The American was taken out by Alex de Angelis in last year’s Misano race, and will be looking to at least complete his first racing lap of the track since 2007! “We had a really good pace in race trim during practice and warm-up at Misano last year but I got hit from behind in the race on the Sunday,” he recalled. “It is always special to race a Ducati in Italy and I can’t wait for it. “Last year went like I said and in 2008 I didn’t race because of a foot injury so we’ll try to make up for it on Sunday, when I’m sure we’ll have the support of a lot of fans and a lot of people from Ducati.” “The race definitely didn’t go to plan at Indianapolis but both Casey and Nicky had the pace to be on the podium,” said team manager Vittoriano Guareschi. “Now we head to Misano, a place where both riders have proved in the past that they can be on the pace so we hope that’s the case again this weekend.” Hayden will join Valentino Rossi at Ducati next season, when Stoner moves to Honda.
