Foreign tourist visit to Bali rises by 18.59 percent

DENPASAR- Foreign tourist arrival to Bali in June 2016 reached 405,835 visits coming through the airport as many as 405,868 visits and 149 visits through seaport. Number of foreign tourists to Bali in June 2016 increased by 12.83 percent when compared to June 2015 and it is an increase by 2.86 percent when compared to May 2016. Chief of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Adi Nugroho, explained that the foreign tourists visiting Bali in June 2016 by nationality mostly came from Australia (26.23 percent), China (19.20 percent), India (4.58 percent), Japan (4.47 percent) and Britain (4.38 percent). In the meantime, during the period of January-June 2016, the most foreign travelers coming to Bali included Australian (23.63 percent), Chinese (20.43 percent), Japanese (4.82 percent), English (4.33 percent) and Indian (4.08 percent).

LOS ANGELES - Canadian R&B artist Drake held off rapper Gucci Mane for a 12th non-consecutive week at the top of the weekly U.S. Billboard 200 album chart on Monday. Drake’s “Views” album sold 16,000 albums, 152,000 songs and was streamed 80 million times in the past week, totaling 85,000 album units, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

Gucci Mane’s latest album “Everybody Looking” debuted at No. 2 with 68,000 album units. The Billboard 200 album chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500

streams equal one album). No other new albums cracked into the top ten of the Billboard 200 chart this week. On the Digital Songs chart, which measures online song sales, Major Lazer’s “Cold Water” debuted at No. 1 with 169,000 copies sold. Turkey navigates tense relations with key allies

ISTANBUL — Turkey summoned a German diplomat Monday over a court decision that prevented President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from addressing a demonstration in Germany, while the top U.S. military official visited Ankara as Turkey navigated through increasingly strained relations with key allies. The government has expressed growing annoyance over what it sees as a lack of support from its allies in the European Union over its response to the failed July 15 coup, saying it expected solidarity rather than criticism for the widespread crackdown on those suspected of

links to the coup plotters. The attempted coup left 271 people dead in a night of violence when renegade sections of the military used tanks, fighter jets and helicopters to try to overthrow the government. Erdogan has accused the United States of harboring Muslim cleric

Fethullah Gulen, who lives in selfimposed exile in Pennsylvania and who the president says masterminded the coup. Ankara has demanded Gulen’s extradition, but Washington is asking for evidence of the cleric’s involvement and says the extradition process must be allowed to run its course. Gulen was once an Erdogan ally until ties soured several years ago. In a sign of efforts to shore up relations, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford,

visited Turkey and met with his Turkish counterpart Gen. Hulusi Akar, who was briefly held captive by the rebels during the coup, as well as with Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. Ahead of the meetings, U.S. joint staff spokesman Capt. Mabarang tradition tightens brotherhood

Timbrah customary village is one of the ancient villages in Bali. Implementation of the mabarang tradition as the ancestral cultural heritage is held after the aci usaba sumbu kaja, when the deities come down on mabiaksa or dancing, Sunday (Jul. 31). In the process of the mabiaksa, local residents held the mabarang tradition at Patemon pavilion for four days. This tradition marked if the deities are dancing in a series of the aci usaba sumbu taking place for a week. However, there is also an opinion stating if the implementation of mabarang tradition is a form of invoking a blessing visualized through palanquin. “So, when holding the mabarang, the entire youth will scramble to

touch the palanquin and then fight for it. Ultimately, they get dissolved in joy,” said one of the local community leaders, Nengah Sudarsa. Mabarang tradition is filled with the sublime values of residents with the deities as a form of inseparable relationship. In the mabarang tradition, the deities have fun with general public, especially the youth. When the palanquin is contested between customary youths with the general public, they mutually pull the palanquin at Patemon pavilion. At the Timbrah customary village, there are 15 palanquins and four effigies representing the deity of mountain, Sakenan, Guliang and Tunggujalan. However, not all palanquins are included in the mabarang tradition.

Fifteen palanquins are dedicated to the deities of Muter Jagat, Muter Anom, Mahyun, Bagus Sakti, Gedong Baas and Nganten Tenganan, Gede Beten Bingin, Nganten Bungaya, Bukit, Maspahit and Nganten Saren. In the meantime, the four other palanquins belong to the deities of Bagus Aeng, Kelod Kangin, Ketut and Kusamba. Prior to dancing, the entire palanquins and sanctified effigies are escorted to do purificatory rite at Beji Kauh springs. The deities are accompanied by prabagus, pangabih, pragaluh, senior figure of the village, kubayan, taksu, prawayah and pilgrims of three clan temples carrying the palanquin. This process is carried out around 15:30. After that, the convoy returned to the village area and then resumed the journey in rural areas for three times. When escorting the deities, one by one of the palanquins are struggled for at Patemon pavilion. Mabarang is performed by

customary youth club with young people of the local village. At that time, they gathered at Petemon or long pavilion. In the meantime, along the road section of Timbrah the young girls in Balinese customary attires looking so pretty welcome the dancing deities. In this tradition, the youths coalesced in the eastern part of long pavilion will fight bitterly against their counterpart in west long pavilion in the meambuh-ambuhan session. After the purificatory rite at Beji Kauh springs, the procession arriving in the area of the village is welcomed boisterously as a form of awakening their spirit as if they were impatient to carry out the rituals. The sound of gamelan played by the art troupe at the long pavilion is even getting louder, indicating if the deities have come down to the village area. Tense atmosphere is occasionally interspersed with jokes and the falling of a number of youths when pulling the palanquin and at-

tempting to fight for it become an attraction of its own. Dozens of local and foreign travelers look so busy capturing each of the moment. A number of youths interviewed said that they were delighted to do so. They claimed there was a sense of fun after a long wander in town and then return home to participate in the mabarang tradition. By doing this, they can touch and even fight for the palanquin. In the meantime, the collapsed palanquin is purified back, carried and put back at each clan temple. Another community figure, Nengah Sukada, added that with the coming down of the deities in the mabarang procession, the residents are expected to always live in harmony and prosperity. The mabarang procession also contains moral values. Both parties are prohibited to hold revenge due to physical fights or any other reasons after executing the mabarang tradition. (kmb31)

Snapping up cheap spy tools, nations ‘monitoring everyone’

LIMA — It was a national scandal. Peru’s then-vice president accused two domestic intelligence agents of staking her out. Then, a top congressman blamed the spy agency for a break-in at his office. News stories showed the agency had collected data on hundreds of influential Peruvians. Yet after last year’s outrage, which forced out the prime minister and froze its intelligence-gathering, the spy service went ahead with a $22 million program capable of snooping on thousands of Peruvians at a time. Peru — a top cocaineproducing nation — joined the ranks of world governments that have added commercial spyware to their arsenals. The purchase from Israeli-American company Verint Systems, chronicled in documents obtained by The Associated Press, offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look into how easy it is for a country to purchase and install off-the-shelf surveillance equipment. The software allows governments to intercept voice calls, text messages and emails. Except for blacklisted nations like Syria and North Korea, there is little to stop governments that routinely violate basic rights from obtaining

the same so-called “lawful intercept” tools that have been sold to Western police and spy agencies. People tracked by the technology have been beaten, jailed and tortured, according to human rights groups. Targets identified by the AP include a blogger in the repressive Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan, opposition activists in the war-ravaged African nation of South Sudan, and politicians and reporters in oil-rich Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. “The status quo is completely unacceptable,” said Marietje Schaake, a European Union lawmaker pushing for greater oversight. “The fact that this market is almost completely unregulated is very disturbing.” The Verint documents that AP obtained in Peru, including training manuals, contracts, invoices and emails, offer more detail than previ-

ously available on the inner workings of a highly secretive industry. “There is just so little reliable data on this,” said Edin Omanovic, a researcher at Privacy International, a London-based advocacy group. “These commercial tools are being used in a strategic and offensive way in much the same way that military tools are used.” The scope and sophistication revealed in the Peru documents approximates, on a small scale, U.S. and British surveillance programs catalogued in 2013 by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. That trove showed how the U.S. government collected the phone records of millions of Americans, few suspected of crimes. Even after some reforms, there is still much to be done in the U.S. and abroad to rein in Big Brother, privacy advocates say. Reached at Verint’s corporate headquarters in Melville, New York, an assistant to CEO Dan Bodner said the company would have no comment. “We typically don’t comment to reporters,” said Barbara Costa. LONDON - The line between pharmaceuticals and technology is blurring as companies join forces to tackle chronic diseases using hightech devices that combine biology, software and hardware. GlaxoSmithKline <GSK.L> and Google parent Alphabet <GOOGL. O> are the latest to share expertise, unveiling a new joint company on Monday that aims to market bioelectronic devices to fight illness by attaching to individual nerves. The plan to wrap a grain-sized electronic collar around nerves sounds like something from ‘Fantastic Voyage’, the 1966 sci-fi film in which a submarine is shrunk to fix an injured scientist’s brain, yet GSK and Alphabet are not alone in pushing the boundaries in medical tech in this way. U.S. biotech firms Setpoint Medical and EnteroMedics <ETRM. O> have already shown the early benefits of bioelectronics both to tackle inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and suppress appetite in the obese. Others are miniaturizing technology in different ways. Medtronic <MDT.N>, for example, sells a well-established camera-in-a-pill as an alternative to colonoscopies, while Proteus Digital Technology is working with drugmakers on pills with embedded microchips that measure drug usage. Makers of lung treatments are racing to make smart inhalers. “It’s an area that hotting up pretty fast because the technology is moving so fast,” said Hilary Thomas, chief medical adviser at KPMG. Many of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies have turned to tech experts at Alphabet, including Swiss-based Novartis <NOVN.S>, which is working with the U.S. group on a smart contact lens with an embedded glucose sensor to help monitor diabetes. Certainly, many technology companies are pushing hard into the healthcare arena, especially when it comes to finding new ways for patients to monitor their own health and track chronic conditions using smart devices. Businesses such as Apple <AAPL.O> and Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, along with Alphabet, are all trying to find health-related applications for a new wave of wearable products. Technology and pharmaceutical companies alike believe accurate monitoring using wearables will dovetail with a drive to offer socalled value-based healthcare. The aim is to prove that medicines can keep large groups of patients healthy, thereby improving their appeal to cost-conscious insurers. That gives drugmakers a major incentive to offer services that go beyond routine drug prescriptions. Real-time feedback on how patients are doing is one of the benefits of bioelectronics, according to Kris Famm, the GSK scientist who has been appointed president of the new jointly owned GSK-Alphabet company Galvani Bioelectronics. “It will really help us hone the intervention,” he said. “This is almost the epicenter of convergence because the technology is not only helping you to monitor a disease but it is also actually the therapy.” There are still plenty of hurdles ahead, including the need for multiyear clinical trials to prove that the new technologies are safe, effective and can deliver the kind of benefits to overall clinical outcomes that proponents hope. NEGARA — Farmers in Jembrana recently complained because the price of their rice slumped far enough when compared to the previous harvest. Damiri, a farmer from Pulukan village, Pekutatan, said on Monday (Aug. 1) that previously he got IDR 15 million for 0.60 hectare of paddy field. But currently with the same area he could only get harvest worth IDR10 million. According to him, the decline in the price of rice is experienced by all farmers. Allegedly it happened because the supply of rice from Java to Bali is too much. Farmers are said to be unable to reject the price of rice offered by contractor because it is the average price as well as consideration of the age of the rice. When left longer, he said the ready-to-harvest rice can be damaged. “That price will be even lower. We were forced to accept it although the price is not as expensive as in the previous harvest,” he said. If calculated, his income from the sales of the rice is considered to still suffer losses in terms of the resources released starting from the preparation of the land, seedling planting to maintenance of the rice. The capital for the purchase of

seeds and pesticides, he said, has returned despite the price is only that much. However, when calculated in terms of the cultivating cost, it is still considered to lose. In the meantime, the Head of the Jembrana Agriculture, Plantation and Livestock Agency, Ketut Wiratma, when asked for his confirmation he promised to check the slump in the price of the rice of farmers. He said that to stabilize the price of rice harvest, his agency has been cooperating with the Union of the Indonesia Rice Milling Entrepreneurs (Perpadi) that gets funding. His agency will check it to Perpadi of Pekutatan subdistrict. “There are many factors causing the price of rice to slump, but this is really too much,” he said. According to him, in addition to the abundant supplies of rice due to massive harvest, the decline in the price of rice can also be caused by the incomplete rice ears as the influence of adverse weather condition. If this happens due to massive harvest, it usually occurs between May and June. However, this has already entered August, so that he suspected there may be other factors affecting the slump of the price. (kmb)

Balinese people especially in the city have also been following the trend of international fashion. “In the matter of modified kebaya, for instance, regardless of the standard customary fashion, Balinese people remain to have put great attention in the artistic elements and have the desire to look different,” she said. Some Balinese designs or products have gone international. For instance, the jewelry products by John Hardy based at Mambal have been sold at the airport, certain locations and has

Admittedly, in terms of branding, the employers of Bali are still weak. “We still produce a lot but use others’ brand because branding is expensive and must consistently invest. It is our shortcoming,” he said. On that account, there must be efforts to provide knowledge about how to build a branding, and the government must support the craftsmen. Performance of SME players slows down

MANGUPURA - The impact of global economic crisis occurred in the past three years has started to be felt by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) sector. The sector mostly resistant to the onslaught of economic crisis has slowed down within the past two years. This was stated by Hendri Saparini, an economic observer, when becoming a speaker in the Asian Credit Supplementation Institution Confederation (ACSIC), in Kuta. According to Hendri, who is also a member of Islamic Financial Services Development Committee (KPJKS) established by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), finance is not the only problem faced by the SMEs. He said there are still many issues in need of solution if wishing to make the SMEs into the economic backbone. “We have always said that the SMEs are the backbone of the economy, but generally the SMEs are often forgotten. There should be an attempt to resolve the problems of the SMEs, ranging from the regulation, finance to the marketing of their products,” he said. The SME sector, based on data owned by Hendri, only contributed as much as 16.4 percent of the total national exports. This could be interpreted that national SMEs still meet local needs, not the needs of global market. However, most of the raw materials of the SME production are brought in from overseas. In addition, business entanglement between large enterprises and the SMEs is very small. Both get raw materials from imports. This is the matter making to the global economic slowdown having an impact on the growth rate of the SME sector nationwide. Currently, added Hendri, the SMEs are facing a variety of problems from upstream to downstream so that they need the attention and solutions. Moreover, the global economic crisis, in fact, has brought in a significant impact on the national SME industry. “Although 59 percent of the Indonesia’s exports belong to primary products that are not made by the SMEs, the global economic crisis has significant implications on the SMEs,” said Hendri. As evidence, the claim amount of credit warrantor for micro and small businesses in the credit warrantor agency continued to increase during the past three years. PT Indonesia Credit Insurance (Askrindo) is one of them. According to Director of Askrindo, Antonius Chandra, in 2014 the claim amount of the credit warrantor paid by Askrindo reached IDR1.2 trillion. The amount went up again to IDR 1.5 trillion in 2015. In the meantime, for the first half of 2016, the claim to be paid lies in the range of IDR 800 trillion. He said that condition of the SMEs in Indonesia is relatively different from the SMEs in other countries, such as South Korea and Japan. In both countries, the global economic crisis does not significantly affect the performance of the SMEs. However, in Indonesia it is even on the contrary. “The government seeks to raise the SME sector through the increase in the public business credit (KUR) where previously it only laid in the range of IDR 40 trillion to IDR 120 trillion,” he said. To address the slowdown in the SME sector, he said there should be a continuous assistance from credit insurance companies. So, when a problem emerges, the credit insurance agency can provide solutions that will improve the resilience and competitiveness of the SMEs. “The SME players of Indonesia must be taught about production procedures and production management so that when having many customers they will not actually reduce the quality of their product. This concept should be taught to the SMEs so that they can survive in the situation of the economic slowdown,” said Antonius. (kmb18)

Related to the plan, the area of a number of hotels having been jutting into the sea all this time will be trimmed of about five meters. It was announced by Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Karangasem, Wayan Tama, in Karangasem, Monday (Aug. 1). Tama who is also a legislator of Karangasem added that the last meeting in the government of Karangasem involved four representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) last month. Tama said that central government makes cooperation with the JICA in the form of loans. “MOU of the government with the JICA will be signed in 2017. The next year it may be resumed with the planning, preparation of design and physical implementation in 2019,” he said. Public broadcaster NHK reported last month that Emperor Akihito, 82, wanted to abdicate “in a few years”, something unprecedented in modern Japan. Ordinary Japanese sympathise with his apparent desire to hand over to Crown Prince Naruhito but the idea faces stiff opposition from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s conservative base. Conservatives have already raised objections to changing the law to let Akihito step down, citing problems ranging from his title and possible strife with a new emperor, to worry the next step would be letting women succeed and pass on the throne, anathema to traditionalists. that a debate over the imperial family’s future would divert political energy from Abe’s push to revise the postwar, pacifist constitution, which they see as a symbol of defeat, but admirers consider the guarantor of Japan’s democracy. JAKARTA - The Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, on Monday said Halim Perdanakusuma airport is ready to serve Hajj pilgrimage 2016 flights that will start on August 9. “We have asked the airport management, Angkasa Pura II and Garuda Indonesia to improve their services,” the minister said in his statement received by Antara here. The minister called upon the Directorate General of Air Transportation to continue coordinating with the Religion Ministry to provide best services to the devout pilgrims. The Hajj pilgrims will start departing on August 9 and flights will continue to depart till September 5, 2016. The flights will depart in two phases. The first lot of flights will depart between August 9 and 21, while the second lot will depart between August 21 and September 5. A total of 48,186 Hajj pilgrims in 114 flight groups will depart for Mecca via the Halim Perdanakusuma airport. These pilgrims hail from Jakarta, West Java, Banten and Lampung provinces. The airport management, a state-owned company, provides the southern apron and runway for the airplanes used for the Hajj pilgrimage flights. The ministry has also coordinated with relevant institutions, including the Hajj flight operator, the Indonesian flight carrier, Garuda Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia Airlines. This year, Garuda will be providing 12 planes. These will be Boeing 777 and 747, and Airbus A330. Meanwhile, the Saudi Arabia Airlines provides Boeing 747 and Airbus A330.(ant)

Indonesian foreign, education ministers consult over schools named by Turkey

JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said the ministry has coordinated with the Ministry of Education and Culture regarding the Turkish governments request to close down a number of educational institutions in Indonesia suspected of being connected with Fethullah Gulen. “I have coordinated with the Minister for Education and Culture and also checked the Foreign Ministrys data,” Marsudi stated at the State Palace complex in Jakarta on Monday. The minister declared that schools in Indonesia will continue their activities. Marsudi further explained that representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture visited all the schools named by the Turkish government. “Indonesia has always respected the laws and sovereignty of other countries. Similarly, we are asking other countries to also respect the laws and regulations applicable in Indonesia,” Marsudi remarked. U.S. warplanes launch bombing campaign on Islamic State in Libya SIRTE - U.S. planes bombed Islamic State targets in Libya on Monday, responding to the U.N.backed government’s request to help push the militants from their former stronghold of Sirte in what U.S. officials described as the start of a sustained campaign against the extremist group in the city.

“The first air strikes were carried out at specific locations in Sirte today causing severe losses to enemy ranks,” Prime Minster Fayez Seraj said on state TV. Brazil quells gang violence in northern state, 65 arrested BRASILIA - Police restored order in a northern state of Brazil on Monday after three nights of violence unleashed by a criminal gang that set off bombs, torched dozens of buses and fired shots at government buildings, authorities said. The wave of violence in Rio Grande do Norte, around 1,553 miles (2,500 kms) north of Rio de Janeiro, was triggered by a plan to move some of the gang’s leaders serving time in the state’s main penitentiary to other jails, and in response to the blocking of their cellphone communications, officials said. Brazil’s President Michel Temer, seeking to quell the violence just days before the Olympic Games open in Rio, authorized the dispatch of 1,000 soldiers and 200 marines to the state on Sunday. Brazil declared in its official bid for the Olympic Games, which open on Friday, that Rio’s air quality was “within the limits recommended by the World Health Organization.” That was not true when Rio won the right to host the Games in 2009 and it is not true now. Rio for years has surpassed WHO limits for the most dangerous air pollutant - called particulate matter (PM) - spewed from millions of vehicles clogging the city’s roads. Thousands die annually in Rio’s metropolitan area of 12 million people because of complications related to the air. People exposed to the pollution have higher risks of lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes, asthma and other diseases. “This is definitely not ‘Olympic air’,” said Paulo Saldiva, a University of Sao Paulo pathologist and member of the WHO committee that set tougher global pollution standards in 2006. “A lot of attention has been paid to Rio’s water pollution, but far more people die because of air pollution than the water,” he said. “You are not obligated to drink water from Guanabara Bay but you must breathe Rio’s air.” Rio’s contaminated Olympic waterways have drawn attention as the city suffers endemic levels of gastrointestinal diseases from a lack of sewage collection. legacy for the Rio Olympics organising committee, said, “When you talk about air quality, it cannot be judged on PM data alone, and Rio’s other pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide are comfortably within WHO’s limits.” Though accurate, Saldiva said “the health damages associated with PM pollution are the most severe of all pollutants” and, because of that, Rio’s air is of poor quality. RIO DE JANEIRO - Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky will both feature in the United States 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay teams at the Rio Olympics, USA Today reported on Monday. Neither of the American team’s bestknown swimmers, with 18-times gold medallist Phelps seeking to add to his collection of 22 medals, qualified for the individual event at the national trials. Five-times Olympian Phelps, the most decorated athlete of all time, is set to compete in three individual events -- the 100 and 200 metres butterfly and 200 individual medley. The relay line-ups, a closely-guarded secret, do not have to be submitted until the night before the race, but it would be no surprise for the pair to be included in the 4x100m. Both U.S. relay teams are likely to finish in the top three, which would give Phelps and Ledecky their first medals of the Games. USA Today, in a report citing an unnamed source with direct knowledge of the U.S. swimming team’s plans, said Phelps would

swim in Sunday night’s men’s relay final. It said Ledecky, the 19-year-old tipped for gold in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle, was expected to take part in the preliminary heats on Saturday afternoon in what would be her first competitive dip in the Rio pool. Swimmers who take part in the preliminary heats, but not the final, also get medals. It is common for the finals line-up to differ from the preliminaries because it saves the top swimmers for the medal showdown and allows more to share in the glory. Ledecky finished seventh in the individual 100 freestyle at last month’s U.S. trials in Omaha, Nebraska while Phelps did not enter. Nathan Adrian was fastest in the trials, with Caeleb Dressel second and Ryan Held third. Others in the mix are Anthony Ervin, Jimmy Fiegen and Blake Peroni. However, Phelps showed impressive speed at the team’s pre-Games training camp in Atlanta. The U.S. swimmers are due to attend a news conference in Rio on Wednesday. (rtr)

Germany forward Leroy Sane joins Manchester City

Manchester City took its offseason spending close to $100 million under coach Pep Guardiola by signing Germany winger Leroy Sane from Schalke on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Sane joined City for a reported $49 million, making him the most expensive German player ever and the costliest signing by a Premier League team this offseason. The English club didn’t disclose the transfer fee. Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, Spain forward Nolito and Ukraine attacking midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko are the other main signings since Guardiola took over as coach in June. City has also been heavily linked with a bid for Everton center back John Stones, who is thought to have a price tag of about $66 million. Sane, who can play anywhere across the front line and is one of Europe’s most highly rated young players, said the presence of Guardiola was key to him joining City. “I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players,” Sane said. “I think he can make me a more complete player. “I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.” Sane played 42 games for Schalke last season, scoring nine goals. He also broke into Germany’s national side and was a member of the squad at this year’s European Championship. He will compete for a place in City’s attacking lineup with Nolito, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Jesus Navas. Bauza will replace Gerardo Martino, who along with star Lionel Messi, quit the team in July after Argentina lost the final of the Copa America tournament for a second consecutive year. “We’ve decided that Bauza is to be the new coach and we hope he will do very well,” said Armando Perez, chairman of

the FIFA-appointed normalizing committee at the Argentine Football Association, said at a news conference. “He will arrive in the country Friday to discuss everything.” Bauza, 58, had a successful career as a player for Argentina’s Rosario Central and Independiente, Colombia’s Junior de Barranquilla and Mexico’s Veracruz, among others. Solo downplays problems Napoli sign Poland in Brazil, complains of US media forward Milik from Ajax BELO HORIZONTE — Hope Solo is blaming the American media for spreading fear about the Zika virus and other problems ahead of the Rio Games. Hoping to lead the U.S. to its fourth straight gold medal, Solo had expressed her own concerns before the Olympics. “We haven’t made it to Rio yet and I have no idea what to expect in Rio, but it’s been beautiful here,” Solo said ahead of Wednesday’s opener against New Zealand, to be played in the same city where the U.S. men upset England in the 1950 World Cup. “It’s a little bit unfortunate because I think the American media has been really tough on people of Brazil,” Solo said. “I feel a little bit bad because when you come here you learn for yourself. I think that we’ve been very hard on the local people.” The Americans are trying to win a title for the second straight year following last year’s triumph in the Women’s World Cup. Solo, in her third Olympics, said it seemed problems in Brazil were being blown out of proportion by media in the U.S. “You look back in 2004 in Greece, and the same thing there, bad publicity surrounding the games, and China as well,” said the 35-year-old from Richland, Washington. “I don’t know why, but we like to sensationalize everything and scare people and then ... when the games go on, everything goes on as planned, ends up being a beautiful tournament. And I expect no less here.” Solo said she expects “everything to be fine” by the time the team gets to Rio despite the widespread concerns related to the games, including Zika, water pollution, security and shoddy construction. Solo said she came to Brazil well prepared, especially against Zika. “I actually spoke to three different infectious disease doctors and specialists,” she explained. “I spoke to them on the phone with my husband as well, and we got to a point where we asked enough questions. We prepared ourselves as best as possible and we got to a level of being as comfortable as we possibly can be. “I’m wearing mosquito repellent just in case, I know the odds are very small but you can never be too safe,” she added. “I’m at a point in my life that I just want to be safe.” Before traveling to Brazil, Solo posted on Twitter a few photos showing her concerns about Zika, including one of her wearing a hat with mosquito netting that covered her entire head and neck. The image prompted criticism against her in Brazil and caused her to apologize when she arrived in the country. “I heard that there were some negative responses here in Brazil,” she said. “I never would want to offend the host country. In fact, I’m cheering for Team USA, but besides Team USA, I’m going to be cheering for the host country. I’m very grateful for them for hosting the tournament. Honestly, everybody around here has been so just nice and genuine and it feels very warming to be here.” Solo has been trying to avoid a trial on misdemeanor
