‘Maleficent’ spooks box office with $70M debut

NEW YORK — The biggest box-office debut of Angelina Jolie’s career propelled Disney’s twisted fairy tale “Maleficent” to a scary-good $70 million opening. The PG-rated fantasy beat forecasts to easily top all films over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Though “Maleficent” was early on considered a risky endeavor for Disney that might turn away family audiences by retelling “Sleeping Beauty” from the villain’s perspective, the film emerged as a hit largely because of the draw of Jolie. Star power has been increasingly elusive in modern Hollywood, where name-brand concepts often rule the box-office. But Jolie, in her first live-action starring role in years, drove interest for “Maleficent” despite lackluster reviews from critics. “It’s a unique thing,” said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney. “Her star power transcends borders and genre.” Seth MacFarlane’s Western comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West” was out-gunned by “Maleficent.” The R-rated Universal release opened in third place with a tepid $17.1 million despite a starry cast of Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron and Amanda Seyfried. By contrast, MacFarlane’s “Ted” (for which he’s making a sequel) opened with $54.4 million in 2012. Last weekend’s top film, Fox’s big-budget mutant sequel “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” dropped to second with $32.6 million. It’s a somewhat steep decline for “Days of
Future Past,” but the film made $95.6 million internationally in its second week, good enough to push its global cumulative total passed $500 million already. But “Maleficent” dominated the marketplace, which has seen female-leading films continually challenge the much-disputed but still prevalent notion that male stars fuel box office receipts. “The whole movie kind of rises and sets on her performance,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “The concept is the character. The character is completely linked to the person playing that role.” The film was a balancing act for Disney, which is used to churning out brighter tales. Hollis credited the company’s marketing department for “walking the fine line” of selling the movie to families (which made up 45 percent of the audience, according to Disney) and suggesting an edginess

Emmy-winning actress Ann B. Davis, who became the country’s favorite and most famous housekeeper as the devoted Alice Nelson of “The Brady Bunch,” died Sunday at a San Antonio hospital. She was 88. Bexar County, Texas, medical examiner’s investigator Sara Horne said Davis died Sunday morning at University Hospital. Horne said no cause of death was available and that an autopsy was planned Monday. Bill Frey, a retired bishop and a longtime friend of Davis, said she suffered a fall Saturday at her San Antonio home and never recovered. Frey said Davis had lived with him and his wife, Barbara, since 1976. More than a decade before scoring as the Bradys’ loyal Alice, Davis was the razor-tongued secretary on another stalwart TV sitcom, “The Bob Cummings Show,” which brought her two Emmys. Over the years, she also appeared on Broadway and in occasional movies. Davis considered her ordinary look an asset. “I know at least a couple hundred glamour gals who are starving in this town,” she told the Los Angeles Times in 1955, the year the Cummings show began its four-year run. “I’d rather be myself and eating.” She said she told NBC photographers not to retouch their pictures of her, but they ignored her request and “gave me eyebrows.” Producer Sherwood Schwartz’s “The

Actually, the Regional Bylaw No.5/2005 on the building and architecture clearly states that at least the Balinese architecture should be applied in every building in Bali. Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Badung Chapter, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, considered the number of buildings having no adopted the characteristics of Bali was inseparable from the lack of oversight by provincial and county / municipal government in enforcing the Regional Bylaw No.5/2005. “Supposedly the supervision has been made from the beginning in the process of construction of a building,” said Alit Wiraputra when contacted on Saturday (May 31). According to him, applying the concept of building and
maintaining the characteristic of Balinese architecture was not too difficult. Even, the public would be benefited by applying Balinese architecture because it had been designed in accordance with the tropical climate. “Indeed, it is not easy to maintain the cultural identity of Bali amidst the rapid development and the impact of globalization. Balinese architecture is basically flexible, inexpensive unlike the assumption of most people and very relevant to be applied,” he said. He hoped the hallmark of Bali should be persistently
maintained in all fields, particularly in relation to tourism sustainability. One of them was the application of Balinese architecture in buildings because it posed one of the important points in the imaging of Bali tourism. “Utilization of Balinese architecture should start from Balinese gates as at the Ngurah Rai Airport, Benoa Harbor, Padang Bai Harbor and other entrances,” he said. Application of Balinese architectural style at every entrance, said Alit Wiraputra, was intended in order that foreign and domestic travelers could have felt if they were in Bali when setting foot here. “Any building in Bali, especially those at roadside including commercial buildings should also apply Balinese architectural style. Residents of Buleleng customary village hold Mepedanaan ritual Bali Post
SINGARAJA - Residents of Buleleng customary village held grandiose piodalan or temple anniversary at Dalem Temple of Buleleng, Sunday (Jun 1). The ritual of pedudusan agung, ngenteg linggih and grandiose piodalan was first held since 1911. Other than regular ritual of temple anniversary, the residents also performed a unique ritual.
The ritual is known as masesanjan resumed with mapedanaan. It is believed to be a symbol of disseminating welfare blessings to people. In addition, it also poses an expression of joy of the residents that have successfully implemented the grandiose temple anniversary. To jazz up the ritual, it was also filled with competition of mounting areca nut for a number of valuable items to be contested by people joining the competition. Ida Pedanda Dwipasandhi from Griya Liligundi amidst the worship explained if the mapedanan ritual was believed to become an event symbolizing the dissemination of prosperity to people. In this ritual, a number of valuable items such as bracelets, rings, rice, clothes and so on were distributed to all the people attending the prayers. Those items were thrown upwards and then children, adults and parents scrambled for them. To more enliven the event, the organizer was also providing similar items competed through the areca nut climbing. The competition was followed by children. “We believe the items obtained pose the symbol of prosperity and at the same time this ritual serves as a form of joy for the implementation of successful ceremony,” he said. Meanwhile, procession of the temple anniversary began with the presentation of pedudusan agung, ngenteg linggih and
piodalan oblation. The ritual was officiated over by Ida Pedanda Gede Made Oka from Kubutambahan, Ida Pedanda Dwipasandhi from Griya Liligundi and priests of local trinity temple of Buleleng customary village. The activity was followed by supporting devotees, tridatu and chief of Buleleng customary village. Afterwards, it was resumed with masesanjan of the deities to the temple outermost courtyard followed by supporting devotees, tridatu and chief of Buleleng customary village. Ultimately, it was ended with the worship en masse organized after the deities took a seat at Paselang Pavilion. Chief of supporting devotees (pengempon) of the Dalem Temple of Buleleng customary village, Nyoman Sulendra, accompanied by Chairman of Ritual Committee, Jro Dalang Nyoman Rugada, proclaimed to supporting devotees due to busy agendas at the peak of the temple anniversary they were given longer opportunity to say prayers. The prayers was opened for seven days and closed on June 8, 2014. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Fabien Cousteau plans 31-day underwater mission Associated Press
ISLAMORADA, Florida — Like viewers worldwide, Fabien Cousteau was entranced by his famous grandfather’s films about marine life and human exploration underwater. Now he’s adding to his family’s sea stories with a 31-day underwater expedition in the Florida Keys. Cousteau dove Sunday to Aquarius Reef Base, a school bus-sized laboratory 60 feet (18 meters) below the ocean’s surface, a few miles off Key Largo. He plans to spend more than a month living underwater with a five-person crew, making a documentary and leading science experiments on the nearby coral reef.

Before their boat left an Islamorada dock Sunday morning, Cousteau and his crew said they would miss seeing the sun for more than month, but they weren’t nervous about being isolated in the undersea lab. “I imagine we’ll want to stay down once we get comfy down there,” Cousteau said. “We won’t want to come back up to the surface because it’s such a magical place.” The idea for “Mission 31” came to Cousteau two years ago when he visited Aquarius during a fundraising push to save the lab, which federal budget cuts had threatened to permanently close. “It reminded me that I’ve always wanted to live underwater,” Cousteau said Saturday at his training base in Islamorada. “Mission 31” builds on the legacy of Conshelf II, the 30-day underwater living experiment in the Red Sea that Jacques Cousteau filmed in 1963 for his Oscar-winning documentary “World Without Sun.” The younger Cousteau can do something his grandfather could not: broadcast the entire adventure live online and communicate with the public through social media and video chats with classrooms on land. “For the first time I’m able to invite the world on a Cousteau expedition in real time,” said Cousteau, who has filmed documentaries on sharks and other marine life. HONOLULU — Before Apollo astronauts went to the moon, they went to Hawaii to train on the Big Island’s lunar-like landscapes. Now, decades-old photos are surfacing of astronauts scooping up Hawaii’s soil and riding across volcanic fields in a “moon buggy” vehicle. The Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems, a Hawaii state agency, is displaying the photos at its Hilo headquarters. Rob Kelso, the agency’s executive director, found the images at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Astronauts from Apollo missions 13 through 17 trained in Hawaii as did some back up crews, Kelso said. Some training was on Mauna Kea volcano, where glacial runoff crushed and refined rock into powder. Astronauts also trained on recent lava flows. Today, robots are tested on the Big Island for moon and Mars missions. In recent years, engineers have tested technology to pull oxygen out of the island’s dirt, which is volcanic basalt like the Martian and lunar soil. Future missions could use this technology to extract oxygen from the land instead of taking it along. The oxygen could be used for breathing, to make fuel or for other purposes.

Government to build 14 coal export seaports Antara
NUSA DUA - The government will immediately build 14 coal export seaports in Sumatra and Kalimantan to monitor coal exports, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s Director General of Minerals and Coal Dr R. Sukhyar remarked on Monday. “The 14 ports will also help to curb illegal coal exports,” he stated while opening the 20th Coaltrans Asia coal industry conference. Sukhyar admitted that there was still a discrepancy in data on coal exports at the ministry of energy
and mineral resources and the directorate general of customs and excise as a result of which the value of royalty received by the state was not optimal. Seven ports will be developed in Sumatra and seven others in Kalimantan based upon the locations of coal mining industries in the regions. Sukhyar noted that the development of coal export ports will utilize the existing infrastructure so that the related costs can be reduced. The plan is part of a cooperation project between the Ministry of En-
ergy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Transportation, while the implementation will be carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, he pointed out. Sukhyar hoped that the special coal ports can balance domestic needs and exports. The domestic needs of coal this year is forecast to reach 95.5 million tons, up from merely 65 million tons last year. According to Sukhyar, the increasing domestic demand can still be met as the target of national coal production this year has been set at 390-420 million tons.

Robusta and arabica dominate coffee production in Buleleng

SINGARAJA - Potential of coffee plantations in Buleleng County is one of the best products in Bali. Climatic condition at high altitudes in some areas is suitable to develop the robusta and arabica coffee variety. Both potential coffee varieties are still becoming focus for the local economy each year with the harvest season occurred in June to July. The Head of Buleleng Forestry and Plantation Agency, I Ketut Nerda, said the potential of coffee development posed an added value for the region on certain height like Buleleng. Some subdistricts becoming the producers of robusta coffee included the Busungbiu, while the arabica coffee was produced by Sukasada. Furthermore, the robusta coffee produced by farmers in Buleleng reached 6,215 tons per year, while arabica coffee reached 767 tons per year. “Only two types of coffee varieties are grown in Buleleng, namely the robusta and arabica. Production of robusta coffee in Buleleng reaches 700 kg per hectare while the arabica coffee reaches 302 kg per hectare,” said Nerda, Sunday (Jun 1). The development of potential owned by coffee farmers in Buleleng was still limited on the arabica and robusta coffee. However, many coffee farmers had not produced civet coffee, whereas the market demand was so attractive. “We have not been able to monitor the progress of civet coffee. Sometimes there are also farmers still collecting individually the civet coffee. Civet coffee cultivation in Buleleng has not developed as in other regions because the development of civet coffee requires a special area,” he said. Meanwhile, Nerda said the human resources development of coffee farmers in Buleleng still continued to be done gradually. This happened considering the higher public interest in cultivating coffee plant. “Its growth is quite significant. Today, many people are interested in growing coffee. As at Wanagiri, there has been fund from the Ministry of Agriculture to help the development of coffee in Buleleng in 2014. The amount of our budget has not been ascertained, but the area of coffee plantation to be receiving the assistance reaches about 400 hectares,” he said. The data indicate the area of Buleleng reached 1365.99 km2, while the area of arabica coffee plantations in Buleleng reaches 2,714 hectares and robusta coffee reaches 10,765 hectares. Nerda explained the public were invited to popularize the tradition of enjoying local coffee production. “Hopefully, people can attune to drink coffee as it has been running naturally. Buleleng region has been unlike the region of Aceh where almost all night the coffee shops are always crowded by coffee lovers. LUCKNOW, India — Police used water cannons to disperse hundreds of women who were protesting Monday against a rise in violence against women in the northern Indian state where two teenagers were gang-raped last week and later found hanging from a tree. The protesters in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, were demonstrating outside the office of the top elected official, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, demanding that he crack down on an increasing number of rape and other attacks on women and girls. Hundreds of police officers, including female officers, pushed and shoved the protesters before deploying water cannons to disperse them. The protesters also demanded that the government curb police indifference, which they said was encouraging attacks on women. Police failed to take any action when the father of one of the girls reported to police that the two cousins were missing. Two police officers were fired for dereliction of duty after the girls were found gang-raped and killed. One of their fathers said police took more than 12 hours to respond to his report that the girls were missing. He said if the police had acted promptly, they could have been rescued. Yadav has recommended a federal inquiry, but his government has been widely accused of a lackadaisical approach toward women’s safety. India has a long history of tolerance of sexual violence, but the attack on the girls has caused outrage across the nation. Activists and ordinary people said it was as if nothing had changed since the December 2012 fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman aboard a moving bus in New Delhi, India’s capital.

EPA seeks to cut power plant carbon by 30 percent

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Monday will roll out a plan to cut earth-warming pollution from power plants by 30 percent by 2030, setting in motion one of the most significant actions to address global warming in U.S. history. The rule, which is expected to be final next year, will set the first national limits on carbon dioxide, the chief gas linked to global warming from the nation’s power plants. They are the largest source of greenhouse gases in the U.S., accounting for about a third of the annual emissions that make the U.S. the second largest contributor to global warming on the planet. The Environmental Protection Agency regulation is a centerpiece of President Barack Obama’s plans to reduce the pollution linked to global warming, a step that the administration hopes will get other countries to act when negotiations on a new international treaty resume next year. Despite concluding in 2009 that greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare, a finding that triggered their regulation under the 1970 Clean Air Act, it has taken years for the administration to take on the nation’s fleet of power plants. In December 2010, the Obama administration announced a “modest pace” for setting greenhouse gas standards for power plants, setting a May 2012 deadline. Obama put them on the fast track last summer when he announced his climate action plan and a renewed commitment to climate change after the issue went dormant during his re-election campaign. “The purpose of this rule is to really close the loophole on carbon pollution, reduce emissions as we’ve done with lead, arsenic and mercury and improve the health of
the American people and unleash a new economic opportunity,” said Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, which has drafted a plan that informed the EPA proposal. Yet the rule carries significant political and legal risks, by further diminishing coal’s role in producing U.S. electricity and offering options for pollution reductions far afield from the power plant, such as increased efficiency. Once the dominant source of energy in the U.S., coal now supplies just under 40 percent of the nation’s electricity, as it has been replaced by booming supplies of natural gas and renewable sources such as wind and solar. “Today’s proposal from the EPA could singlehandedly eliminate this competitive advantage by removing reliable and abundant sources of energy from our nation’s energy mix,” Jay Timmons, president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, said in a statement issued Sunday. EPA data shows that the nation’s power plants have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 13 percent since 2005, or about halfway to the goal the administration will set Monday. The agency is aiming to have about 26 percent cut by 2020, but states will get some leeway in trying to meet that target. LISBON, Portugal — Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann cordoned off Monday an area of scrubland near where the British girl vanished seven years ago. Officers placed yellow-andwhite police tape around the waste ground, which is mostly level and slightly larger than a soccer field, and were expected to conduct a forensic examination of the area in coming days. Officials have previously said detectives may use excavators, dogs and groundpenetrating radar as they scrutinize the terrain. Officials made no immediate comment on Monday’s developments. Cases that are under investigation in Portugal are covered by a judicial secrecy law, which forbids the release of information.
The scrubland is about 300 meters (330 yards) from the Praia da Luz resort in southern Portugal where Madeleine vanished from her family’s vacation apartment in May 2007, shortly before her fourth birthday. The area was searched in the days following her disappearance. Authorities in Portugal and Britain said recently they would conduct new searches in coming weeks after reviewing the case file and a new public appeal for information. Portuguese police closed the case in 2008 because authorities
had detected no crime. The public prosecutor’s office in Lisbon last year reopened the investigation, saying new leads emerged during the case review though it did not elaborate. British police launched Operation Grange in 2011 to try to find out what happened to Madeleine. British detectives have been sifting through the Portuguese case files and say they have identified new avenues of investigation. Among other things, they have compiled a record of cases involving sexual assaults on children in the area between 2004 and 2010.

Indonesia’s exports fell 5.92 percent to US$14.29 billion in April from US$15.19 billion in March 2014, Head of BPS Suryamin told reporters on Monday.
He noted that oil and gas exports made up US$2.63 billion of the total exports in value with other commodities accounting for US$11.66 billion.
He said imports surged to US$16.26 billion in April or an increase of 11.93 percent from US$14.52 billion in March. The imports included US$3.69 billion
in oil and gas with other commodities accounting for US$12.56 billion. Meanwhile, the country’s inflation was 0.16 percent in May as against a deflation of 0.02 percent in April. Suryamin attributed the inflation to high food price hike. “The
prices of manufactured foods, cigarettes and tobacco were the biggest contributors to the price hike,” he said. The inflation in May brought the country’s total inflation to 1.56 percent in the first five months of the year. Year-on-year, inflation in May was 7.32 percent.

So I thought it was too much risk and I decided that I would only push 100% again on the final lap and that was the key to win the race. “It was a great battle but this time I only enjoyed it when I passed the finish line because Jorge was so strong and I was pushing, nearly crashed in every corner. after that we did a really nice battle and on the last lap I pushed to try to overtake at the end of the straight and open a small gap.” That victory pass was the last of numerous slipstream moves, planned by Marquez and his team before the race. “We changed sixth gear for the race because if you have a Yamaha in front they have a lot of corner speed, so you might not be close enough to overtake on the brakes,” explained Marquez. “So our strategy was to overtake on the straight with the slipstream. For that reason we changed the gear a little bit. But on the first lap when I was alone [without the slipstream] the bike was a little bit slower and the Ducati of Iannone overtook me.” The only other race this season that compares with the Mugello battle was a 0.259s victory over Lorenzo’s team-mate Valentino Rossi at round one in Qatar. “It’s difficult to say which race was hardest,” said Marquez. “Every situation in every circuit is different. Here I felt more prepared to fight because my physical condition was 100% and in Qatar maybe I was struggling a little bit [after breaking a leg in the winter]. “But anyway both riders are so great. Valentino has his strongest points, Jorge has his strongest points. With every rider you need to use a different strategy.” Home star Rossi finished third on Sunday, 2.7s from Marquez, having climbed swiftly from tenth place on the grid.

RIO DE JANEIRO — It’s just 10 days away. The World Cup’s opening match is coming June 12 in Sao Paulo, and the final days before soccer’s most important tournament have seen a flurry of on- and off-field action. Anger over the billions being spent by Brazil to host the World Cup continues to fuel protests, although they are far smaller than anti-government demonstrations last June that saw a million people out on a single night. Indigenous protesters clashed with police in the capital city of Brasilia outside the new stadium that will host Cup matches. They wore traditional dress and some held soccer balls on which they wrote anti-World Cup slogans. Some had bows and arrows, and one officer was wounded in the leg with an arrow as tear gas wafted over the protest. Still, excitement is building among soccer fans around
the globe. In Bangladesh, poor children played spirited, impromptu matches, no doubt imaging themselves as future soccer stars. In Brazil’s Amazon jungle, members of an indigenous tribe played in a village near the city of Manaus, one of the Cup’s host cities. Also in the Amazon, young barefoot boys played soccer in the ruins of a rubber baron’s villa near the town of Paricatuba. The San Gabriel Archangel church in Mexico City offered encouragement to the country’s team by displaying a glass case with a statue of the baby Jesus wearing a miniature replica of the squad’s uniform. Teams taking part in the tournament prepared for their matches, both in workouts and in “friendly” games against other national teams. Neymar led workouts for Brazil’s squad near a mountain town north of Rio. Other team members
like Thiago Silva, Paulinho and Maicon exercised hard on stationary bikes, preparing their legs for the marathon, monthlong tournament. But friendly matches proved disastrous for some players. Italian midfielder Riccardo Montolivo and Mexico’s Luis Montes, also a
midfielder, each broke a leg in their games and will miss the Cup. Brazilian authorities rushed to put finishing touches on stadiums, airports and other infrastructure for the Cup, much of which simply won’t be finished before an estimated 300,000 foreigners arrive for the tournament.

RIO DE JANEIRO — It’s just 10 days away. The World Cup’s opening match is coming June 12 in Sao Paulo, and the final days before soccer’s most important tournament have seen a flurry of on- and off-field action. Anger over the billions being spent by Brazil to host the World Cup continues to fuel protests, although they are far smaller than anti-government demonstrations last June that saw a million people out on a single night. Indigenous protesters clashed with police in the capital city of Brasilia outside the new stadium that will host Cup matches. They wore traditional dress and some held soccer balls on which they wrote anti-World Cup slogans. Some had bows and arrows, and one officer was wounded in the leg with an arrow as tear gas wafted over the protest. Still, excitement is building among soccer fans around
the globe. In Bangladesh, poor children played spirited, impromptu matches, no doubt imaging themselves as future soccer stars. In Brazil’s Amazon jungle, members of an indigenous tribe played in a village near the city of Manaus, one of the Cup’s host cities. Also in the Amazon, young barefoot boys played soccer in the ruins of a rubber baron’s villa near the town of Paricatuba. The San Gabriel Archangel church in Mexico City offered encouragement to the country’s team by displaying a glass case with a statue of the baby Jesus wearing a miniature replica of the squad’s uniform. Teams taking part in the tournament prepared for their matches, both in workouts and in “friendly” games against other national teams. Neymar led workouts for Brazil’s squad near a mountain town north of Rio. Other team members
like Thiago Silva, Paulinho and Maicon exercised hard on stationary bikes, preparing their legs for the marathon, monthlong tournament. But friendly matches proved disastrous for some players. Italian midfielder Riccardo Montolivo and Mexico’s Luis Montes, also a
midfielder, each broke a leg in their games and will miss the Cup. Brazilian authorities rushed to put finishing touches on stadiums, airports and other infrastructure for the Cup, much of which simply won’t be finished before an estimated 300,000 foreigners arrive for the tournament.

after that we did a really nice battle and on the last lap I pushed to try to overtake at the end of the straight and open a small gap.” That victory pass was the last of numerous slipstream moves, planned by Marquez and his team before the race. “We changed sixth gear for the race because if you have a Yamaha in front they have a lot of corner speed, so you might not be close enough to overtake on the brakes,” explained Marquez. “So our strategy was to overtake on the straight with the slipstream. For that reason we changed the gear a little bit. But on the first lap when I was alone [without the slipstream] the bike was a little bit slower and the Ducati of Iannone overtook me.” The only other race this season that compares with the Mugello battle was a 0.259s victory over Lorenzo’s team-mate Valentino Rossi at round one in Qatar. “It’s difficult to say which race was hardest,” said Marquez. “Every situation in every circuit is different. Here I felt more prepared to fight because my physical condition was 100% and in Qatar maybe I was struggling a little bit [after breaking a leg in the winter]. “But anyway both riders are so great. Valentino has his strongest points, Jorge has his strongest points. LISBON, Portugal — Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann cordoned off Monday an area of scrubland near where the British girl vanished seven years ago. Officers placed yellow-andwhite police tape around the waste ground, which is mostly level and slightly larger than a soccer field, and were expected to conduct a forensic examination of the area in coming days. Officials have previously said detectives may use excavators, dogs and groundpenetrating radar as they scrutinize the terrain. Officials made no immediate comment on Monday’s developments. Cases that are under investigation in Portugal are covered by a judicial secrecy law, which forbids the release of information.
The scrubland is about 300 meters (330 yards) from the Praia da Luz resort in southern Portugal where Madeleine vanished from her family’s vacation apartment in May 2007, shortly before her fourth birthday. The area was searched in the days following her disappearance. Authorities in Portugal and Britain said recently they would conduct new searches in coming weeks after reviewing the case file and a new public appeal for information. Portuguese police closed the case in 2008 because authorities
had detected no crime. The public prosecutor’s office in Lisbon last year reopened the investigation, saying new leads emerged during the case review though it did not elaborate. British police launched Operation Grange in 2011 to try to find out what happened to Madeleine. EPA seeks to cut power plant carbon by 30 percent

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Monday will roll out a plan to cut earth-warming pollution from power plants by 30 percent by 2030, setting in motion one of the most significant actions to address global warming in U.S. history. The rule, which is expected to be final next year, will set the first national limits on carbon dioxide, the chief gas linked to global warming from the nation’s power plants. They are the largest source of greenhouse gases in the U.S., accounting for about a third of the annual emissions that make the U.S. the second largest contributor to global warming on the planet. The Environmental Protection Agency regulation is a centerpiece of President Barack Obama’s plans to reduce the pollution linked to global warming, a step that the administration hopes will get other countries to act when negotiations on a new international treaty resume next year. Despite concluding in 2009 that greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare, a finding that triggered their regulation under the 1970 Clean Air Act, it has taken years for the administration to take on the nation’s fleet of power plants. In December 2010, the Obama administration announced a “modest pace” for setting greenhouse gas standards for power plants, setting a May 2012 deadline. Obama put them on the fast track last summer when he announced his climate action plan and a renewed commitment to climate change after the issue went dormant during his re-election campaign. “The purpose of this rule is to really close the loophole on carbon pollution, reduce emissions as we’ve done with lead, arsenic and mercury and improve the health of
the American people and unleash a new economic opportunity,” said Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, which has drafted a plan that informed the EPA proposal. Yet the rule carries significant political and legal risks, by further diminishing coal’s role in producing U.S. electricity and offering options for pollution reductions far afield from the power plant, such as increased efficiency. Once the dominant source of energy in the U.S., coal now supplies just under 40 percent of the nation’s electricity, as it has been replaced by booming supplies of natural gas and renewable sources such as wind and solar. “Today’s proposal from the EPA could singlehandedly eliminate this competitive advantage by removing reliable and abundant sources of energy from our nation’s energy mix,” Jay Timmons, president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, said in a statement issued Sunday. EPA data shows that the nation’s power plants have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 13 percent since 2005, or about halfway to the goal the administration will set Monday. The agency is aiming to have about 26 percent cut by 2020, but states will get some leeway in trying to meet that target. Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, in the press conference on Sunday (Jun 1) in relation to the preparation of the Nusa Penida Festival said that Nusa Penida with the cluster of three islands developed naturally. The share of local government was still considered low. According to the regent, local authorities actually had a duty to open investment opportunity in the region. Then, it governed the flow of incoming investment. “Now, we see if the tourism runs without control, the Culture and Tourism Agency does not seriously build Nusa Penida,” he said. As a result, the tourism developed blindly just at one location, while other locations was still far left behind. This indicated if Klungkung remained unready to face the adverse effects of tourism development. In addition, according to the regent, the local community should also be involved in every program. They should not be let just be a spectator. “I actually asked the structure of the Nusa Penida Festival committee to be re-arranged. I do not want if the event is handled
by a ‘red plate’ committee.’ Please involve local communities. They know better about the region,” he explained. In order to anticipate the tourism development, Suwirta affirmed to have prepared a number of attempts. His party had already owned a team of tourism consultant. For every investment, the regent would only issue a principle permit with strict requirements. “Investors should have clear intentions. celerate the development. Other than Jungut Batu and Lembongan, according to him, the arrangement was also made to other tourism area. However, the arrangement in the two regions was increasingly difficult because the violations were massive and had long occurred. Such condition had lasted for a dozen years. Today, the tourism could not only rely solely on the nature without the involvement of government. Thus, it was necessary to make breakthrough that could generate, develop and organize. As an embryo, the Nusa Penida Festival was expected to open up new insights into the potential of Nusa Penida. Other than developing the sense of belonging to Nusa Penida, the event could also introduce a variety of classical sacred arts. It had clear purpose namely to draw investors to invest, empower communities and increase regional revenues. To note, Nusa Penida was visited by at least 260,000 travelers every year. Robusta and arabica dominate coffee production in Buleleng

SINGARAJA - Potential of coffee plantations in Buleleng County is one of the best products in Bali. Climatic condition at high altitudes in some areas is suitable to develop the robusta and arabica coffee variety. Both potential coffee varieties are still becoming focus for the local economy each year with the harvest season occurred in June to July. The Head of Buleleng Forestry and Plantation Agency, I Ketut Nerda, said the potential of coffee development posed an added value for the region on certain height like Buleleng. Some subdistricts becoming the producers of robusta coffee included the Busungbiu, while the arabica coffee was produced by Sukasada. Furthermore, the robusta coffee produced by farmers in Buleleng reached 6,215 tons per year, while arabica coffee reached 767 tons per year. “Only two types of coffee varieties are grown in Buleleng, namely the robusta and arabica. Production of robusta coffee in Buleleng reaches 700 kg per hectare while the arabica coffee reaches 302 kg per hectare,” said Nerda, Sunday (Jun 1). The development of potential owned by coffee farmers in Buleleng was still limited on the arabica and robusta coffee. However, many coffee farmers had not produced civet coffee, whereas the market demand was so attractive. “We have not been able to monitor the progress of civet coffee. Sometimes there are also farmers still collecting individually the civet coffee. Civet coffee cultivation in Buleleng has not developed as in other regions because the development of civet coffee requires a special area,” he said. Meanwhile, Nerda said the human resources development of coffee farmers in Buleleng still continued to be done gradually. This happened considering the higher public interest in cultivating coffee plant. “Its growth is quite significant. Today, many people are interested in growing coffee. As at Wanagiri, there has been fund from the Ministry of Agriculture to help the development of coffee in Buleleng in 2014. The amount of our budget has not been ascertained, but the area of coffee plantation to be receiving the assistance reaches about 400 hectares,” he said. The data indicate the area of Buleleng reached 1365.99 km2, while the area of arabica coffee plantations in Buleleng reaches 2,714 hectares and robusta coffee reaches 10,765 hectares. Nerda explained the public were invited to popularize the tradition of enjoying local coffee production. “Hopefully, people can attune to drink coffee as it has been running naturally. Buleleng region has been unlike the region of Aceh where almost all night the coffee shops are always crowded by coffee lovers. LUCKNOW, India — Police used water cannons to disperse hundreds of women who were protesting Monday against a rise in violence against women in the northern Indian state where two teenagers were gang-raped last week and later found hanging from a tree. The protesters in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, were demonstrating outside the office of the top elected official, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, demanding that he crack down on an increasing number of rape and other attacks on women and girls. Hundreds of police officers, including female officers, pushed and shoved the protesters before deploying water cannons to disperse them. The protesters also demanded that the government curb police indifference, which they said was encouraging attacks on women. Police failed to take any action when the father of one of the girls reported to police that the two cousins were missing. Two police officers were fired for dereliction of duty after the girls were found gang-raped and killed. One of their fathers said police took more than 12 hours to respond to his report that the girls were missing. He said if the police had acted promptly, they could have been rescued. Yadav has recommended a federal inquiry, but his government has been widely accused of a lackadaisical approach toward women’s safety. India has a long history of tolerance of sexual violence, but the attack on the girls has caused outrage across the nation. Activists and ordinary people said it was as if nothing had changed since the December 2012 fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman aboard a moving bus in New Delhi, India’s capital.

Serhiy Astakhov told The Associated Press by telephone that five rebels were killed and eight injured in the continuing attack on the camp in Luhansk, a major city not far from the Russian border, according to a preliminary assessment. Seven servicemen were injured, three seriously.

Fabien Cousteau plans 31-day underwater mission Associated Press
ISLAMORADA, Florida — Like viewers worldwide, Fabien Cousteau was entranced by his famous grandfather’s films about marine life and human exploration underwater. Now he’s adding to his family’s sea stories with a 31-day underwater expedition in the Florida Keys. Cousteau dove Sunday to Aquarius Reef Base, a school bus-sized laboratory 60 feet (18 meters) below the ocean’s surface, a few miles off Key Largo. He plans to spend more than a month living underwater with a five-person crew, making a documentary and leading science experiments on the nearby coral reef.

Decades-old photos emerge of Apollo training
HONOLULU — Before Apollo astronauts went to the moon, they went to Hawaii to train on the Big Island’s lunar-like landscapes. Now, decades-old photos are surfacing of astronauts scooping up Hawaii’s soil and riding across volcanic fields in a “moon buggy” vehicle. The Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems, a Hawaii state agency, is displaying the photos at its Hilo headquarters. Rob Kelso, the agency’s executive director, found the images at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Astronauts from Apollo missions 13 through 17 trained in Hawaii as did some back up crews, Kelso said. Some training was on Mauna Kea volcano, where glacial runoff crushed and refined rock into powder. Astronauts also trained on recent lava flows. Today, robots are tested on the Big Island for moon and Mars missions. In recent years, engineers have tested technology to pull oxygen out of the island’s dirt, which is volcanic basalt like the Martian and lunar soil. Future missions could use this technology to extract oxygen from the land instead of taking it along. The oxygen could be used for breathing, to make fuel or for other purposes.

Government to build 14 coal export seaports Antara
NUSA DUA - The government will immediately build 14 coal export seaports in Sumatra and Kalimantan to monitor coal exports, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s Director General of Minerals and Coal Dr R. Sukhyar remarked on Monday. “The 14 ports will also help to curb illegal coal exports,” he stated while opening the 20th Coaltrans Asia coal industry conference. Sukhyar admitted that there was still a discrepancy in data on coal exports at the ministry of energy
and mineral resources and the directorate general of customs and excise as a result of which the value of royalty received by the state was not optimal. Seven ports will be developed in Sumatra and seven others in Kalimantan based upon the locations of coal mining industries in the regions. Sukhyar noted that the development of coal export ports will utilize the existing infrastructure so that the related costs can be reduced. The plan is part of a cooperation project between the Ministry of En-
ergy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Transportation, while the implementation will be carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, he pointed out. Sukhyar hoped that the special coal ports can balance domestic needs and exports. The domestic needs of coal this year is forecast to reach 95.5 million tons, up from merely 65 million tons last year. According to Sukhyar, the increasing domestic demand can still be met as the target of national coal production this year has been set at 390-420 million tons.

Residents of Buleleng customary village hold Mepedanaan ritual Bali Post
SINGARAJA - Residents of Buleleng customary village held grandiose piodalan or temple anniversary at Dalem Temple of Buleleng, Sunday (Jun 1). The ritual of pedudusan agung, ngenteg linggih and grandiose piodalan was first held since 1911. Other than regular ritual of temple anniversary, the residents also performed a unique ritual.
The ritual is known as masesanjan resumed with mapedanaan. It is believed to be a symbol of disseminating welfare blessings to people. In addition, it also poses an expression of joy of the residents that have successfully implemented the grandiose temple anniversary. To jazz up the ritual, it was also filled with competition of mounting areca nut for a number of valuable items to be contested by people joining the competition. Ida Pedanda Dwipasandhi from Griya Liligundi amidst the worship explained if the mapedanan ritual was believed to become an event symbolizing the dissemination of prosperity to people. In this ritual, a number of valuable items such as bracelets, rings, rice, clothes and so on were distributed to all the people attending the prayers. Those items were thrown upwards and then children, adults and parents scrambled for them. To more enliven the event, the organizer was also providing similar items competed through the areca nut climbing. The competition was followed by children. “We believe the items obtained pose the symbol of prosperity and at the same time this ritual serves as a form of joy for the implementation of successful ceremony,” he said. Meanwhile, procession of the temple anniversary began with the presentation of pedudusan agung, ngenteg linggih and
piodalan oblation. The ritual was officiated over by Ida Pedanda Gede Made Oka from Kubutambahan, Ida Pedanda Dwipasandhi from Griya Liligundi and priests of local trinity temple of Buleleng customary village. The activity was followed by supporting devotees, tridatu and chief of Buleleng customary village. Afterwards, it was resumed with masesanjan of the deities to the temple outermost courtyard followed by supporting devotees, tridatu and chief of Buleleng customary village. Ultimately, it was ended with the worship en masse organized after the deities took a seat at Paselang Pavilion. Chief of supporting devotees (pengempon) of the Dalem Temple of Buleleng customary village, Nyoman Sulendra, accompanied by Chairman of Ritual Committee, Jro Dalang Nyoman Rugada, proclaimed to supporting devotees due to busy agendas at the peak of the temple anniversary they were given longer opportunity to say prayers. The prayers was opened for seven days and closed on June 8, 2014. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — The biggest box-office debut of Angelina Jolie’s career propelled Disney’s twisted fairy tale “Maleficent” to a scary-good $70 million opening. The PG-rated fantasy beat forecasts to easily top all films over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Though “Maleficent” was early on considered a risky endeavor for Disney that might turn away family audiences by retelling “Sleeping Beauty” from the villain’s perspective, the film emerged as a hit largely because of the draw of Jolie. Star power has been increasingly elusive in modern Hollywood, where name-brand concepts often rule the box-office. But Jolie, in her first live-action starring role in years, drove interest for “Maleficent” despite lackluster reviews from critics. “It’s a unique thing,” said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney. “Her star power transcends borders and genre.” Seth MacFarlane’s Western comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West” was out-gunned by “Maleficent.” The R-rated Universal release opened in third place with a tepid $17.1 million despite a starry cast of Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron and Amanda Seyfried. By contrast, MacFarlane’s “Ted” (for which he’s making a sequel) opened with $54.4 million in 2012. Last weekend’s top film, Fox’s big-budget mutant sequel “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” dropped to second with $32.6 million. It’s a somewhat steep decline for “Days of
Future Past,” but the film made $95.6 million internationally in its second week, good enough to push its global cumulative total passed $500 million already. But “Maleficent” dominated the marketplace, which has seen female-leading films continually challenge the much-disputed but still prevalent notion that male stars fuel box office receipts. “The whole movie kind of rises and sets on her performance,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “The concept is the character. The character is completely linked to the person playing that role.” The film was a balancing act for Disney, which is used to churning out brighter tales. Emmy-winning actress Ann B. Davis, who became the country’s favorite and most famous housekeeper as the devoted Alice Nelson of “The Brady Bunch,” died Sunday at a San Antonio hospital. She was 88. Bexar County, Texas, medical examiner’s investigator Sara Horne said Davis died Sunday morning at University Hospital. Horne said no cause of death was available and that an autopsy was planned Monday. Bill Frey, a retired bishop and a longtime friend of Davis, said she suffered a fall Saturday at her San Antonio home and never recovered. Frey said Davis had lived with him and his wife, Barbara, since 1976. More than a decade before scoring as the Bradys’ loyal Alice, Davis was the razor-tongued secretary on another stalwart TV sitcom, “The Bob Cummings Show,” which brought her two Emmys. Over the years, she also appeared on Broadway and in occasional movies. Davis considered her ordinary look an asset. “I know at least a couple hundred glamour gals who are starving in this town,” she told the Los Angeles Times in 1955, the year the Cummings show began its four-year run. “I’d rather be myself and eating.” She said she told NBC photographers not to retouch their pictures of her, but they ignored her request and “gave me eyebrows.” Producer Sherwood Schwartz’s “The

Actually, the Regional Bylaw No.5/2005 on the building and architecture clearly states that at least the Balinese architecture should be applied in every building in Bali. Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Badung Chapter, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, considered the number of buildings having no adopted the characteristics of Bali was inseparable from the lack of oversight by provincial and county / municipal government in enforcing the Regional Bylaw No.5/2005. “Supposedly the supervision has been made from the beginning in the process of construction of a building,” said Alit Wiraputra when contacted on Saturday (May 31). According to him, applying the concept of building and
maintaining the characteristic of Balinese architecture was not too difficult. Even, the public would be benefited by applying Balinese architecture because it had been designed in accordance with the tropical climate. “Indeed, it is not easy to maintain the cultural identity of Bali amidst the rapid development and the impact of globalization. Balinese architecture is basically flexible, inexpensive unlike the assumption of most people and very relevant to be applied,” he said. He hoped the hallmark of Bali should be persistently
maintained in all fields, particularly in relation to tourism sustainability. One of them was the application of Balinese architecture in buildings because it posed one of the important points in the imaging of Bali tourism. “Utilization of Balinese architecture should start from Balinese gates as at the Ngurah Rai Airport, Benoa Harbor, Padang Bai Harbor and other entrances,” he said. Application of Balinese architectural style at every entrance, said Alit Wiraputra, was intended in order that foreign and domestic travelers could have felt if they were in Bali when setting foot here. “Any building in Bali, especially those at roadside including commercial buildings should also apply Balinese architectural style.
