103 Chinese nationals arrested for alleged cyber fraud

DENPASAR - The 92 men and 11 women were arrested in two houses in Denpasar and another house in Badung regency. Police also arrested 11 Indonesians who were allegedly working for the Chinese nationals. “They were targeting Chinese nationals living in [China]. They were working from abroad to make it harder for the Chinese police to track them. They did not just operate in Indonesia; many of them had worked in other countries,” said the Bali Police’s special crime director, Sr. Comr. Anom Wibowo. Anom added that the suspects had contacted their victims in China by phone, pretending to be the authorities. “They had many ways to trick their victims. They told the victims that a family member had gotten
into an accident and needed money for emergency medical treatment. Or they threatened their victims and extorted them,” he said. The arrest was the result of a joint investigation conducted by the Bali Police’s special crime directorate, the Counter Transnational and Organized Crime (CTOC) task force and the SABATA antibandits, street crime and anarchism unit. “The investigation took time. We saw suspicious behavior from these people [that] was similar to other fraudulent cyber activities previously uncovered in Bali,”
Anom said. The police later raided three houses in connection to the case on Tuesday, seizing multiple mobile phones, routers and laptops allegedly used to commit fraud. Besakih village and Pempatan exposed to volcanic ashes
Head of the Mount Agung Monitoring Team at Rendang, Karangasem, Isyak N Danak, said on Tuesday (May 1) the eruption was first marked with the recording of shallow and deep volcanic earthquake for several times and a number of bursts. In addition to recording the earthquake, visually at the peak also occurred gusts for several times. “The eruption occurred on Monday at 22:45. The height of the white and gray ash column reached 1,500 meters. The smoke moved westwards so it did not disturb the flight,” he said. Isyak told that due to the eruption, the Besakih village and surrounding areas were exposed to volcanic ashes. “After the eruption, we deployed the officers to check the ashes at Besakih, and the location was indeed exposed to volcanic ashes, but the ashes remain thin,” he said. He explained that until now the status of Mount Agung has not been lowered to advisory considering many deep volcanic earthquakes are still recorded. There are still energy pressures underneath. Besides, the hole or gap in the bottom of the crater remains open. So, the potential for the occurrence of further eruption
stays quite large. However, his agency cannot ensure when the eruption will occur again. Clearly, a small eruption still potentially occurs again considering the activity of Mount Agung remains quite high. “We have not been able to ascertain the decline of the status. Previously, the seismograph indeed did not record the occurrence of volcanic earthquakes. But now the volcanic earthquake returned to happen. So, we cannot confirm when the status will be lowered as the status decline very much depends on the volcano. We will continuously monitor the development. If the volcanic activities decrease, there will be an evaluation by the team to lower the status. Conversely, if the volcanic activities increase significantly, the status is raised again,” he concluded. Although the people who live around the Mount Agung are seen to have getting used to the current volcanic situation, they are still appealed to always be vigilant. In addition, he also advised people not to climb the mountain top because the volcanic activities has not been completely normal “We are calling on so that no one gets closer to the top because the eruption can happen any time. Unfortunately, some people are still desperate to climb to the top and we cannot do much. Most importantly, we have appealed them not to approach the radius of 4 km,” said Isyak. A resident of Puregai hamlet, Pempatan, Rendang, I Wayan Wardana, said that in the area there was an ash rain due to the eruption of Mount Agung which returned to happen on Sunday night. “The ash exposure falling remained thin and people are not panicked because of this ash. As happened on Monday (Apr. 30), the volcano with the height of 3,142 meters above sea level returned to erupt. The raised solfatara smoke cloud reached a height of 1,500 meters moving westwards. The eruption caused some villages at Besakih and Pempatan village to be exposed to volcanic ashes.

Ahead of anniversary, penjor begins to decorate Bangli town
BANGLI - On Tuesday (May 1), Bangli town looked a little different than usual. A number of penjor paraphernalia began to adorn the town of Bangli. The ornamental penjor of various designs are installed in order to enliven the 814th anniversary of Bangli whose peak will be celebrated on May 10. As seen last Monday, a number of ornamental penjor paraphernalia looked to have been installed in front of the office of Bangli regent and around the Captain Mudita Square. The penjor paraphernalia were installed by contest participants, namely the local agencies, villages and schools from Monday (Apr. 30). In addition to penjor, Bangli town is also fitted with banners, umbul-umbul and red-white flags to mark the anniversary. Mongolians sip ‘oxygen cocktails’ to cope with smog
ULAANBAATAR - Fed up with the smog in Mongolia’s capital, residents have resorted to sipping “lung” tea and “oxygen cocktails” in a desperate bid to protect themselves from pollution, despite health officials saying there is no evidence they work.
Worried parents have held protests to press the government to take action. But some businesses are cashing in, even though a WHO official says there is no evidence that such anti-smog products work.
Ulaanbaatar topped New Delhi and Beijing as the world’s most polluted capital in 2016, UNICEF said in a report warning of a health crisis that has put every child and pregnancy at risk. With residents of so-called ger (slum) districts using coal stoves to cook and heat their homes in the world’s coldest capital, where temperatures can dip as low as -40 Celsius (-40 Fahrenheit), pollution has skyrocketed. While most of the pollution comes from stoves in the gers, road transport and power plants add to the toxic mix. On January 30, air pollution was 133 times higher than the safe limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO). UNICEF reported that cases of respiratory infections have nearly tripled and pneumonia is now the second leading cause of death for children under five.

Advertisements in Mongolia boast that “drinking just one oxygen cocktail is equal to a three-hour-walk in a lush forest”. At the produce section of the State Department Store, blue cans of oxygen called “Life Is Air” are on sale for $2, and promise to turn a glass of juice into a foamy, sweet “oxygen cocktail” after spraying some into a glass through a special straw. Other stores and pharmacies have oxygen cocktail machines that resemble coffee makers and can turn a juice into a frothy drink for $1. Pregnant women are among the most avid customers of the Russian-made product, with some saying they are following their doctor’s orders. Batbayar Munguntuul, a 34-year-old accountant and moth-
er of three, drank oxygen cocktails when she was pregnant, but she ended up spending much more money on medicine. “Every winter we constantly buy medicine,” she told AFP. “It has reached a point that it is like just any other grocery product that you have to buy regularly.” Like many other Mongolians, she has chosen to buy an air purifier to make sure her family breathes clean air at home. Her machine, which filters out toxic fumes, cost her $300. The average level of PM2.5 particles -- which penetrate deep into the lungs -- was 75 micrograms per cubic metre last year, or three times the exposure recommended by the WHO for a 24-hour period. Air pollution has been linked to asthma, bronchitis, and other long-term respiratory diseases. Some Mongolians drinking special teas named Enkhjin, Ikh Taiga, and Dr. Baatar that claim to clean lungs. Dr. Baatar’s CEO, Baatar Chantsaldulam, said sales surge by 20 to 30 percent during winter, when pollution tends to reach its peak. “First it takes all the toxins out of the blood, then it turns the toxins in the lung into mucus, and all the plants in tea helps boost the human immune system,” he told AFP. But Maria Neira, the head of the WHO’s public health department, said the “real solution” to protect the lungs and the cardiovascular system was to reduce air pollution and avoid exposure to it. “The business community will offer plenty of those solutions,” Neira said, referring to the oxygen cocktails and lung teas. “We don’t have any scientific evidence whether they provide any benefit,” she said.

Non-profit organisations such as Parents Against Smog say the government is not doing enough to reduce air pollution and argue that ordinary people should not have to suffer financially to protect their health. The group organised a sit-in protest earlier this year. “For the past 10 years, people have known that air pollution has reached dangerous levels,” Parents Against Smog coordinator Tumur Mandakhjargal told AFP. “However, policymakers only address the issue by talking about passing out clean stoves and clean coal,” Mandakhjargal said. The NGO says the government should give some 200,000 ger residents access to loans so that they install heating insulation and replace their stoves with cleaner heaters. It also complains that a ger relocation plan has been too slow. The government spent $120 million between 2008-2016 to combat pollution, with half of the funds coming out of its foreign aid revenue. Part of the money has gone to distributing low-emission stoves to residents of ger districts. Last year, the parliament approved a tax exemption for companies that sell air purifiers, while Prime Minister Ukhnaa Khurelsukh issued an order to distribute $1.6 million worth of the appliances to all schools. Non-profit organisations are giving away air purifiers and anti-smog masks to schools, kindergartens and hospitals. The non-profit group Smog and Kids donated a South Korean-made air ventilation system to a kindergarten in one of the capital’s most polluted areas, and the difference in air quality inside and outside the classrooms is palpable. Such systems can cost up to $2,500 plus $500 for installation. But Smog and Kids representative Tumendalai Davaadalai said air purifiers were not the answer to the problem. “Mobile air purifiers don’t give oxygen, they’re not plants. The decision by Khurelsukh’s cabinet to distribute air purifiers is a very bad decision,” Davaadalai said. “They are just funding businesses without any positive results.” (afp)

AMLAPURA - On June 27, 2018, Balinese people return to determine the choice of Bali’s leader. The majority of Balinese people have enough experience in making choices because they have been repeatedly involved in the election. However, it is different for newbie voters. It needs unusual ways to draw votes from newbie voters. Who can seize the votes of newbie voters can be a winner amid the so strict competition between the two candidates. Karangasem Electoral Commission (KPU) noted that 15 percent of the total voters in Karangasem are newbie voters. They are new and will be aged 17 years old on June 27. A Commissioner of KPU Karangasem in charge of Dissemination, Voter Education and HR Development, I Gede Krisna Adi Widana, said on Saturday (Apr. 28) the enthusiasm of newbie voters in welcoming the Bali Gubernatorial Election is quite high. This can be seen during the dissemination to schools conducted by KPU Commissioners. The candidate pair of governor and their campaign team do various ways to grab the votes of newbie voters. They may go through social media approach, lifestyle and language or communication style easily digested by newbie voters. “Moreover, newbie voters have high enthusiasm. They focus on how to vote and the conditions of being voters to make choices because they have not ever participated in the election,” said Krisna. Many ways have been done by KPU Karangasem to disseminate this Bali regional election to newbie voters. It starts from being an inspector in flag ceremony at schools, getting involved in the election of OSIS leader to entering classes to provide dissemination. “They are very aware that in the age of 17 years they already have the right to vote,” he said. Currently, the obstacle is their
requirement to obtain the right to vote. Absolute requirement is they must have electronic identity card. The students having been 17 years old and aged 17 years on June 27 must immediately submit it, so they can vote. Krisna asserted, students should be aware that from now until June 27, whether they have been 17 years old or not. If they have been, they must be ready to submit the electronic identity card. Therefore, it requested the Karangasem Civil Registry to always be ready to help the KPU and prepares the electronic identity card. In addition to giving the right to vote, it is also meant to suppress the number of abstain votes. The official of civil registry should be ready to facilitate the newbie voters up to day one before the Bali regional election. Commissioner of the KPU Karangasem in charge of Data and Planning Division, Ngurah Maharjana, said there are currently 1,467 voters consisting of 779 male voters and 668 female voters. This is known after looking at the 12 voter elements during verification and research. Ngurah added that other than the 17-year-olds, retired army / police are also classified into newbie voters. In this group, KPU Karangasem also conducts dissemination so that they realize to have the right to vote and can participate in the next Bali regional election. “The treatment is the same, where they must have an electronic identity card and be recorded in the population data,”
said Ngurah Maharjana. KPU Karangasem stipulated the permanent voters list (DPT) for Bali gubernatorial election amounting to 376,752 people. The number was announced in a plenary meeting attended by all the Subdistrict Electoral Committee (PPK), representative of the winning team of the candidate pair and Karangasem Electoral Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu), recently. Through the plenary meeting was obtained the number of male voters namely 190,256 voters and 186,496 female voters. Voting process of the gubernatorial election will be implemented in 945 polls or TPS.
Chairman of the KPU Karangasem, I Made Arnawa, said the DPT is permanent but the number of voters may be more than the ones in the DPT. It happens because currently there are about 258 voters having not done the electronic identity card data capture as one condition to be voters. For the remaining voters, the Karangasem Civil Registry will issue a certificate if they are actually residents of Karangasem and have been recorded in the data of the Civil Registry. For the process of capturing the identity card data, Arnawa said the KPU still gives tolerance until the Election Day
on June 27, 2018. DENPASAR - Karangasem is the district with the lowest growth in Bali in 2016 namely 5.92 percent. MOSAIC stone seeking in the sea is not as easy as imagined. It is not limited to resisting the heat of the sun. More than that, the seekers must also bet their life against the ferocious pounding waves. Mosaic stones have been popular as can be used as a building ornament. People often use to beautify their home yard or other outdoor or landscaping elements. One of the colors is shiny black. There is also a combination of white and green. It depends on the ‘taste’ of each individual. One of the locations to seek this stone is on Watu Klotok Beach, Tojan village, Klungkung. Many residents make this profession into their livelihood. On Tuesday morning (May 1), the atmosphere on the black sandy beach looked different from before.

The waves were big and rolling. A very loud banging was heard. It came and went. From the east, a number of residents came wearing simple clothes. Almost all put on hats of a large size, covering their face. It is to avoid them from the increasingly stinging sun. Some also carried containers such as small sacks, bamboo woven baskets, and nets. They walked westward. After that, they sat on the mound of gravel of various sizes. They chose one by one and then put them into the container brought. the stones are thrown back because they are not worth selling. A stone seeker, Ketut Mudana, 40, said that such work has been pursued by dozens of residents. There are from Tojan, Gelgel and Satra village. No doubt, the risk is quite high. He also told that since last week they should be more careful. The incident of three residents dragged by waves to death on the beach when doing malukat or purificatory rite is still attached to their mind. “We still remember the incident. So, we should really see the situation,” he said. The stones are sold to collectors. The price is cheap where the smallest ones are sold for the range of IDR 15,000 per container. Meanwhile, the larger ones are sold for about IDR 10,000. “It’s hard to find. Sometimes
within a day we just can collect as much as two containers,” he said. During dozens of years of pursuing the fortune on this beach, he admitted to be grateful. No one is dragged by the waves yet. At best, they are just crashed and suffered minor injuries. “We believe, here is the place to make a living. Definitely, we are kept away from such a thing. We also always ask for salvation,” he added. It is not much different from the narrative of Ni Nengah Kista, 65. The job she pursued does not produce many results. It is just enough to buy two kilogram of rice for the consumption of her family. She remains thankful. “We have been collecting mosaic stone here for decades,” she said. (sos)

S. Korea: US troop withdrawal not linked to possible peace treaty SEOUL - South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday dismissed claims that US troops stationed in the country would have to leave if a peace treaty was signed with the North.
Seoul and Pyongyang have remained technically at war since the 1950s but Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed at a landmark summit last week to work towards a permanent treaty to replace a 65-year-old armistice agreement. “US Forces Korea (USFK) is a matter of the South Korea-US alliance. It has nothing to do with signing a peace treaty,” Moon said, referring to the agreement that sees 28,500 US forces based in the South. Moon’s comments came after a presidential adviser publicly suggested the presence of US soldiers, sailors and airmen would be called into question if a peace treaty were to be agreed with Pyongyang. Moon Chung-in had written in Foreign Affairs magazine that it would be “difficult to justify (US forces) continuing presence in South Korea” after the adoption of a peace treaty. The Blue House -- President Moon’s office -- has warned the adviser “not to cause any more
confusion,” with such comments, spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said. The rebuttal came as Seoul’s defence ministry confirmed that several US fighter jets had arrived in the country to take part in a regular joint exercises. The F-22 “Raptor” stealth fighters last came to the South in December when Seoul and Washington staged their largest-ever joint air exercise, days after North Korea test-fired a missile believed to be capable of hitting the US mainland. Local media reported eight F-22 jets had arrived Sunday at an airbase in the southern city of Gwangju. SAO PAULO - A 24-storey building used by squatters in the center of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s biggest city, collapsed early Tuesday after a blaze that tore through the structure, leaving at least three missing. Survivors described waking in the night to find themselves surrounded by flames and escaping with their children before the tower turned to rubble. Scores of homeless families were occupying the building, according to officials. However, despite the ferocity of the blaze, only one person was listed as almost certainly dead. “There are some missing, approximately three, with one very likely a fatality,” Ricardo Peixoto, a firefighters’ commander, told AFP. “We don’t know how many people were in the building so we don’t know whether we’ll find more victims in the ruins.” So far, 250 people who’d been living in the building have been registered after the blaze, city security official Jose Roberto said. The fire began overnight and spread rapidly, turning the building into an inferno before it fell down. Dramatic pictures tweeted by the fire service showed flames shooting up the sides of the whole tower, moments before it was reduced to a heap of smoking ruins. An adjacent church was also damaged. “We got the call at around 1:30 am (0430 GMT) and we came at once, a few minutes later, and about five floors of the building were on fire,” Peixoto said. “Fifteen or 20

Pedal power: the rise of cargo bikes in Germany
Whether they’re hauling parcels or children, cargo bikes are becoming a familiar sight in German cities as the nippy, clean alternative to cars and delivery vans -- and shaking up urban transport in the process. A desire to go green has been key to the rise of cargo bikes in a country where dozens of smogchoked cities are considering diesel driving bans to combat air pollution. “The diesel scandal is a major incentive,” said Arne Behrensen, one of the top promotors of cargo bikes in Germany, a mode of transport as old as the bicycle itself which refers to a two- or three-wheeled bike with a fixed load carrier, usually at the front. Financial incentives, more choice in models and the promise of zipping past rush-hour traffic in the bike lane have added to the appeal. “In the ‘90s, we were happy to sell one a year,” said Gaya Schuetze of Berlin’s Mehringhof bicycle shop, one of the capital’s leading cargo bike centres. “Then we noticed more and more interest, first from families and then companies.” Commonplace in northern Europe until the mid-20th century, freight bikes were used to deliver everyday essentials such as milk, bread and newspapers. But these heavy, unwieldy bikes quickly fell out of favour and into oblivion as motorised vehicles gained ground. The cargo bike’s revival began some two decades ago in cycling-mad Denmark and the Netherlands, blessed with flat landscapes and comfortable bike lanes, before reaching Germany. Today Germany is Europe’s largest market for cargo bikes in terms of volume -- with industry data showing sales for electrically assisted cargo bikes alone surged to 21,000 in 2017, 42 percent over the previous year. - No sweat Over the years, cargo bikes have evolved from bulky two-wheelers that required serious leg muscle. Modern upgrades offer lighter frames and more spacious carriers, while e-cargo bikes have allowed the less physically active or those living in hilly areas to also jump in the saddle. Cargo bikes “now reach a wider audience, people who don’t want to arrive at work sweaty or aren’t especially sporty,” said Sophia Becker, a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam near Berlin. According to the European CycleLogistics project, a staggering 174 models of cargo bikes are now available, while some 50 brands vied for attention at Berlin’s International Cargo Bike Festival in April.

out” without spending 1,300 to 5,000 euros ($1,500-$6000) depending on the model, she said. Keen to promote the climate-friendly cargo bikes, several initiatives have emerged to lend them to companies and individuals for free trials. Last year, German firm Velogut began loaning them out to 150 companies in Berlin. Among the sign-ups have been photographers, coffee and pastry vendors, florists, chimneysweeps, beekeepers, Christmas tree deliverers and even a travelling anaesthetist. The federal government has also got in on the act by introducing a rebate of up to 2,500 euros for the purchase of an e-cargo bike with a load of more than 150 kilos, while Berlin authorities offer subsidies of 500 to 1,000 euros. - ‘Protect us’ But experts say the biggest roadblock to cargo bikes going mainstream is the lack of adapted infrastructure: safe cycle lanes, secure parking and easy-to-find repair shops.

“If they want clean air, they have to protect us,” said Antje Merschel, co-initiator of a recent Berlin referendum on cycling policies. “We’re not going to risk our lives on a bike.” Online retailer Amazon has started using cargo bikes for deliveries, while shipping giant UPS has been running battery-powered freight bikes in German cities since 2012. But the big players in delivery are still waiting for bike manufacturers to catch up and mass-produce reliable low-maintainance models, which are so far mostly made by small, independent companies. There is also the complication of needing “micro-hubs” in often high-rent urban areas from where couriers can collect trucked-in goods for the final kilometres to the client’s front door. “For families, the bikes are here and they’re reliable,” said urban planner Francisco Luciano of the French cargo bike manufacturer Douze Cycles. “When it comes to cycle logistics, we’re still learning.” (afp)

This cuisine is made from assorted vegetables coming with spicy sauce and grated coconut. Apparently, it does not become a good thing, just a legendary culinary icon.
Currently, the famous thing of the district adjacent to Gianyar is only the tourist attraction in Nusa Penida Islands. Due to the beauty owned, it earns a nickname as ‘the Blue Paradise Island.’ The landscape is very beautiful and the white sandy beach is very exotic. It can teases tourists to make a visit. Every year, the visitors reach hundreds of thousands of people. However, when looking back, not many people know about it. According to history, actually Klungkung district has a very interesting side. It is no longer a matter of natural beauty. Around the 18th century, coinciding with the era of the Kingdom of Klungkung, it was very famous for its arts as they were very well maintained starting from the dances, paintings, woven fabric to religious case. These are legacies from the Gelgel Kingdom era from the 14th to 15th centuries. After that, a number of Anglurah descendants built a kingdom in other parts of Bali and spread over all the existing districts. The Bindu Barong Festival involving young artists of high school and college students looked good at dancing the barong ket. They are not only adept at adapting to the rhythm of gamelan music, but also able to give expression to the barong. Just imagine, the barong ket made of wood can be presented as living object. It happens because they have mastered the dance techniques in terms tetuek, tandang and pedum karang so that it became a very interesting spectacle. Each dancer got the opportunity to make performance for 10-15 minutes consisting of the pepeson (preliminary), pengawak (core), ngintip jangkrik (improvisation with gamelan players) and pekaad (closing). Drum player and dancers were supposedly able to make
improvisation, yet still referred to the pattern of Balinese dance. Well, when the barong dancers were capable to make improvisation with drum players, the audience applauded encouragingly. The Bindu Barong Festival was opened by the Head of the Badung Culture Agency, Ida Bagus Anom Basma, representing the regent of Badung, Friday (Oct. 28) showed off the contest of barong dance and single drum playing. There were 30 participants making their appearance in turns for two days. Each participant consisted of two barong dancers and one drum player. Although they were coalesced into a single team, they did not appear with their partner or came in free fighting. The Bindu Barong Festival was
held by (ST) Dharma Yowana customary youth club of Bindu hamlet, Bhuana Mekar, Abiansemal, Badung, at local Dalem Temple. Other than for commemorating the Youth Pledge Day, the competition also aimed to preserve Balinese arts and increase togetherness and creativity of the youth. “The event is also intended to support Bindu as a tourism village in Badung,” said committee chairman IGA Indra Mahendra. The event was supported by Furama Villas & Spa. In addition to helping preserve the culture as the spirit of Bali tourism, the support is also meant to realize Bindu hamlet as a tourism village. “We strongly support this cultural activity. McDonald’s torched, hundreds arrested in May Day protests in Paris
PARIS - Nearly 300 protesters were arrested Tuesday after May Day riots in central Paris, where hooded youths torched a McDonald’s restaurant and several vehicles during a march against President Emmanuel Macron’s public sector reforms. Shouting “Rise up, Paris” and “Everyone hates the police”, around 1,200 people in black jackets and face masks joined the traditional May 1 union-led demonstration for workers’ rights, according to a count by Paris police. After trying to hold up the march a group of protesters ran amok along the route, destroying a McDonald’s restaurant near Austerlitz station, east of the city centre, and setting it ablaze. They also torched vehicles at a car dealership, along with a mechanical digger and a scooter, leaving a trail of destruction and plumes of dark smoke billowing into the air. The worst unrest in months in Paris comes at a time of heightened tensions over Macron’s reform of the public sector and follows a showdown between police and anti-capitalist squatters at a sprawling commune in western France. The police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the demonstrators. On Tuesday night 102 people remained in custody out of 276 who were arrested, police said, adding: “31 businesses were damaged, of which two were burned, 6 vehicles were burned and 10 others damaged.” Macron condemned the violence, posting on Twitter during his trip to Australia: “Everything will be done so that the perpetrators are identified and held responsible for their actions.” He added the demonstrations would be treated with “absolute firmness”.

The police had warned of the risk of extremist groups using May Day to set up a rematch of the clashes seen during demonstrations last year over Macron’s labour reforms and at an anti-capitalist camp in western France that was demolished by police earlier this month. “Macron makes us mad,” read a banner held by one masked demonstrator. “We’re tired of this capitalist system that destroys everything and of brutal police repression of all those who oppose it,” a 19-year-old student who was part of the group told AFP. The scenes of looting and destruction overshadowed the May Day march, which drew between 20,000 and 55,000 peaceful protesters according to police and union estimates. Countrywide, around 143,000 people took part in labour marches, according to government estimates, up slightly on 2017. Trade unions and students’ unions have been trying to rally the French against Macron’s shake-up of indebted state rail operator SNCF and access to public universities, which they see as part of a rollback of France’s cherished public service. Polls show the French supporting those reforms but being more critical of Macron’s fiscal policy, seen as favouring the wealthy over the working and middle classes. “Macron is the president of the rich,” Genevieve Durand, a retired public servant who took part in a march in the central city of Clermont-Ferrand, told AFP, echoing a label that has clung to the centrist leader. Armenian opposition leader calls for strike after losing PM vote
YEREVAN - Armenia’s political crisis deepened Wednesday as opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan called for protesters to block key transport links after lawmakers rejected his bid to become prime minister. Pashinyan supporters have pledged to ramp up pressure on authorities to force the ruling Republican Party, which withheld support for the protest leader despite tens of thousands massing in the streets, to quit power. “From 8:15 am tomorrow all roads should be blocked, I announce a general strike,” Pashinyan told supporters gathered in the capital Yerevan’s Republic Square late Tuesday. “A revolution of love and tolerance is continuing,” he said, also urging people to block an airport and turn out for a huge rally Wednesday evening as the crowds chanted “Nikol! Nikol!”. Parliament had voted 45 in favour to 55 against Pashinyan, with the Republican Party headed by ousted former prime minister Serzh Sarkisian rejecting his candidacy after hours of deliberation during a day-long special session. “The political force which declared a war against its own people has destroyed itself,” Pashinyan said in parliament after the vote.
“No one will be able to take victory away from the people.” Pashinyan previously warned that the lawmakers’ unwillingness to back him could lead to a “political tsunami”. Armenia has been in the grip of a severe political crisis in recent weeks, with observers and the international community expressing concern that the turmoil could destabilise the small south Caucasus country. Pashinyan, who spearheaded the mass protests that led to the resignation of veteran leader Sarkisian last month, has insisted that only he can rid the poor ex-Soviet nation of corruption and poverty and conduct free and fair elections. He had been thought to be just a handful of votes short of a majority in parliament. Ahead of the vote lawmakers from the Republican Party grilled Pashinyan on a number of technical issues in an apparent effort to make him appear incompetent. “The entire country is united in its demand that the Republicans’ rule must end,” said Laura Shahverdyan, a 22-year-old student. Anait Tolmasyan, a 63-year-old pensioner, added: “We all only have one demand: the Republicans must go. Nikol is the true leader of the Armenian people.” (afp)

Indian court convicts gangster over journalist murder
An Indian court on Wednesday convicted notorious gangster Chhota Rajan and eight others of murdering a journalist in a drive-by shooting in Mumbai seven years ago. Jyotirmoy Dey, a crime reporter who specialised on gangland activities for the Mid-day tabloid, was shot dead in broad daylight on June 11, 2011. Prosecutors said Rajan had ordered the hit because he was unhappy about negative articles that Dey had written about him.

PADANG - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that flights in West Sumatra Province are operating normally despite Mount Marapi`s eruption at 7:03 a.m. local time, Wednesday. “The Minangkabau Geophysics Agency has yet to receive reports on flight disruptions, (after the eruption),” Budi Samiadji, the head of information and observation, noted during a phone call in Padang on Wednesday. According to the Mount Marapi Observatory Post, the smoke column rose four thousand meters from the crater. However, Samiadji noted that the eruption has not yet affected the climate and other atmospheric conditions in the province. Following the eruption, the Minangkabau Climatology Office has issued an early warning notice on Wednesday (May 2) on the mid- to high-intensity rains during night time in Mentawai Islands, West Pasaman District, Limapuluh Kota District, Agam
District, and Padang Pariaman District. The office has also forecast that winds at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour in the province will move in the northeast direction. On a separate occasion, Hartanto, the volcano observatory official, remarked that during the eruption, Mount Marapi had spewed thick grey volcanic ash and resulted in a quake, with an amplitude of 10 millimeters, that lasted for 485 seconds. Despite the blast, Mount Marapi remains on alert level II since August 2011. Hence, all residents and climbers are not allowed to conduct any activities within a three-kilometer radius of the crater. The authority has also called on the people to stay abreast of the updates and other information on Mount Marapi`s eruption. Before erupting on May 2, Mount Marapi had spewed some volcanic ash on Apr 27. The volcano had also erupted twice last year. (ant)
A special court in India’s financial capital Mumbai found Rajan guilty of ordering the contract killing of the 56-year-old. The underworld don, who was appearing by video link from a New Delhi jail where he is being held, simply said “theek hai” (“OK”) after judge Sameer Adkar read out his verdict. The court also convicted eight henchmen, including four shooters. They and Rajan, who is in his late 50s, are expected to be sentenced later Wednesday. Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat called for life sentences, saying Dey represented “the fourth pillar of democracy”. “The punishment must act as a deterrent,” he told the courtroom. The judge acquitted two others of involvement, including a female journalist who had been accused of conspiring with and abetting Dey’s killers. Jigna Vora, who worked for the Asian Age newspaper, was accused of passing on Dey’s home address and motorcycle registration number to gangsters working
for Rajan. She maintained her innocence throughout the trial and broke down in tears following her acquittal on all charges. Police said Rajan’s gang followed Dey, and shot him five times from behind near his home in the northern Mumbai suburb of Powai. Officers said the gang was paid 500,000 rupees ($11,000) for the killing. They fled to towns around the country in the aftermath, where most of them were arrested. Mid-day said at the time of his death that Dey was “a victim of his fearless journalism”. His murder provoked outrage among Indian journalists, hundreds of whom took to the streets of Mumbai to demand greater protection from the state government and a swift inquiry. Reporters in the world’s largest democracy often face harassment and intimidation by police, politicians, bureaucrats and criminal gangs. Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, was once one of India’s most wanted men and is accused of dozens of gruesome crimes. He was deported from Indonesia in October 2015 after two decades on the run. Rajan was allegedly the right-hand man of Mumbai crime boss Dawood Ibrahim before an acrimonious split following the 1993 bomb blasts in Mumbai -- then known as Bombay -- that killed 257 people. KUALA LUMPUR - Two Malaysian badminton players have been hit with career-ending bans of 20 and 15 years respectively after being found guilty of corruption and match-fixing, the sport’s governing body said Wednesday. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli, 25, was banned for 20 years and fined $25,000, while Tan Chun Seang, 31, was barred for 15 years and fined $15,000. The were found guilty of breaching the BWF code of conduct in relation to “betting, wagering and irregular match results”, said a statement from the body. A BWF ethics panel, which held hearings in February in Singapore into the case, found both players “engaged in corruption offences over a significant period and a significant number of tournaments” dating back to 2013. Zulfadli committed more violations over a longer period and it was proven he had manipulated the results of four matches, the BWF said. Their suspension began from January 12, the date on which both players were provisionally suspended by the BWF. Neither player is affiliated with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), but Tan was in Malaysia’s squad for the prestigious Thomas Cup in 2010. He was banned by the BAM from competing in Asian tournaments for two years after quitting the national team in 2011. In 2011, Zulfadli beat current world champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark to clinch the World Junior Championships. Badminton has been hit by cheating scandals before. At the 2012 Olympics, eight women’s doubles players were disqualified for trying to lose group games to gain an easier quarter-final draw. And in 2014 the BW F asked police to investigate claims by two Danish players, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus and Kim Astrup, that they were approached by a Malaysian man to throw matches. That Benzema proved the difference was testament to the bravery of Zinedine Zidane, who in picking the striker ignored the whistles of Real’s fans in recent weeks as well as a miserable scoring run that showed him scoring just once in 12 matches. But it was also credit to Benzema, whose weaving run led to Isco’s decisive goal against Atletico Madrid in the semis last year and who scored the winner in 2014, also in the semis, also against Bayern, in a 1-0 win in the first leg. France may be wondering what they will be missing at the World Cup in Russia this summer. “I expected him to score goals again,” Zidane said. “He has got two and he has given us the chance to go through.” Benzema’s latest contribution was not entirely of his own making given his second at the Santiago Bernabeu was a gift, presented after a poor backpass from Corentin Tolisso and an even worse attempt to clear by Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich. Zidane says Champions League is ‘in Real’s DNA’
Zinedine Zidane said the Champions League is “in Real Madrid’s DNA” after his side hung on to deny Bayern Munich and move into their fourth final in five years. Real earned the chance to win their third Champions League in a row after Karim Benzema’s double strike and desperate last-minute defending gave them a 2-2 draw on the night and a 4-3 victory over the
two legs of the semi-final. Real have already seen bitter rivals Barcelona win the Spanish league this season, but Zidane said Europe’s premier competition always brings the best out of his club, who have won it 12 times. “It’s in the DNA of the club. We never stop fighting up to the very last minute, just as the Bayern players did tonight.”
Zidane said Benzema had more than earned his chance to start the match after the French striker was only a substitute in the first leg in Munich. “He deserved to score, he has worked hard and he has never given anything less than his all. “His game is always the same and he is always important for us. Mancini ‘ready’ to become new Italy coach - federation
Zenit Saint Petersburg coach Roberto Mancini has agreed in principle to become the next Italy coach, Italian federation (FIGC) commissioner Roberto Fabbricini said Tuesday. “Yesterday (Monday) in Rome there was a meeting ... with Roberto Mancini, who said he was ready to end his relationship with Zenit and coach the national team,” Fabbricini said in quotes carried by Gazzetta Dello Sport. “We agreed that we’ll start to talk about figures and details on May 13, at the end of the Russian championship. “I want to state that nothing is decided. We’ve told Mancini clearly that the FIGC has a budget for the role which it does not intend to deviate from.” The annual budget for the future coach and his backroom staff has been fixed at five million euros ($5.9 million). Mancini, 53, met with the Italian FA sub-commissioner Alessandro Costacurta and team manager Gabriele Oriali for over two hours in Rome on Monday evening. It was reported over the weekend that Carlo Ancelotti had turned down the job,
with Gazzetta reporting that the federation had offered the former Manchester City manager a twoyear contract until 2020 worth four million euros ($4.8million) a year. “Coaching the national team would be prestigious and a source of pride for me because Italy are one of the most important teams in the world,” Mancini told Italian radio on Monday. During his 17-year coaching career Mancini led Manchester City to their first English league title in 44 years in 2012, and won three Serie A titles with Inter Milan and Italian Cups with Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio. The former Lazio and Sampdoria forward never became a regular with Italy during his 10-year international career, during which he won 36 caps and scored four goals. Italy have been without a permanent coach since Gian Piero Ventura was sacked after they failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 60 years after losing to Sweden in a twolegged playoff in November. Coach Jupp Heynckes said Bayern Munich played their best match for years but were undone by a mistake from goalkeeper Sven Ulreich to allow Real Madrid to reach the Champions League final. “We are very disappointed,” Heynckes said. “My team played an outstanding game. I haven’t seen Bayern play as well as that for years. “At this high level you can’t make the sort of mistakes we made after halftime.” The unfortunate Ulreich gifted Karim Benzema his second goal of the match one minute after the break at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, completely misjudging a back-pass from Corentin Tolisso to allow the French striker to slot the ball into an empty net. James Rodriguez equalised for Bayern in the 63rd minute, setting up a desperate last half-hour in which the Germans pinned Real back but despite a handful of chances failed to score the goal that would have given them an away-goals victory on aggregate. Zidane says Champions League is ‘in Real’s DNA’
Zinedine Zidane said the Champions League is “in Real Madrid’s DNA” after his side hung on to deny Bayern Munich and move into their fourth final in five years. Real earned the chance to win their third Champions League in a row after Karim Benzema’s double strike and desperate last-minute defending gave them a 2-2 draw on the night and a 4-3 victory over the
two legs of the semi-final. Real have already seen bitter rivals Barcelona win the Spanish league this season, but Zidane said Europe’s premier competition always brings the best out of his club, who have won it 12 times. “It’s in the DNA of the club. We never stop fighting up to the very last minute, just as the Bayern players did tonight.”
Zidane said Benzema had more than earned his chance to start the match after the French striker was only a substitute in the first leg in Munich. “He deserved to score, he has worked hard and he has never given anything less than his all. “His game is always the same and he is always important for us. Mancini ‘ready’ to become new Italy coach - federation
Zenit Saint Petersburg coach Roberto Mancini has agreed in principle to become the next Italy coach, Italian federation (FIGC) commissioner Roberto Fabbricini said Tuesday. “Yesterday (Monday) in Rome there was a meeting ... with Roberto Mancini, who said he was ready to end his relationship with Zenit and coach the national team,” Fabbricini said in quotes carried by Gazzetta Dello Sport. “We agreed that we’ll start to talk about figures and details on May 13, at the end of the Russian championship. “I want to state that nothing is decided. We’ve told Mancini clearly that the FIGC has a budget for the role which it does not intend to deviate from.” The annual budget for the future coach and his backroom staff has been fixed at five million euros ($5.9 million). Mancini, 53, met with the Italian FA sub-commissioner Alessandro Costacurta and team manager Gabriele Oriali for over two hours in Rome on Monday evening. It was reported over the weekend that Carlo Ancelotti had turned down the job,
with Gazzetta reporting that the federation had offered the former Manchester City manager a twoyear contract until 2020 worth four million euros ($4.8million) a year. “Coaching the national team would be prestigious and a source of pride for me because Italy are one of the most important teams in the world,” Mancini told Italian radio on Monday. During his 17-year coaching career Mancini led Manchester City to their first English league title in 44 years in 2012, and won three Serie A titles with Inter Milan and Italian Cups with Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio. The former Lazio and Sampdoria forward never became a regular with Italy during his 10-year international career, during which he won 36 caps and scored four goals. Coach Jupp Heynckes said Bayern Munich played their best match for years but were undone by a mistake from goalkeeper Sven Ulreich to allow Real Madrid to reach the Champions League final. “We are very disappointed,” Heynckes said. “My team played an outstanding game. I haven’t seen Bayern play as well as that for years. “At this high level you can’t make the sort of mistakes we made after halftime.” The unfortunate Ulreich gifted Karim Benzema his second goal of the match one minute after the break at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, completely misjudging a back-pass from Corentin Tolisso to allow the French striker to slot the ball into an empty net. James Rodriguez equalised for Bayern in the 63rd minute, setting up a desperate last half-hour in which the Germans pinned Real back but despite a handful of chances failed to score the goal that would have given them an away-goals victory on aggregate. KUALA LUMPUR - Two Malaysian badminton players have been hit with career-ending bans of 20 and 15 years respectively after being found guilty of corruption and match-fixing, the sport’s governing body said Wednesday. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli, 25, was banned for 20 years and fined $25,000, while Tan Chun Seang, 31, was barred for 15 years and fined $15,000. The were found guilty of breaching the BWF code of conduct in relation to “betting, wagering and irregular match results”, said a statement from the body. A BWF ethics panel, which held hearings in February in Singapore into the case, found both players “engaged in corruption offences over a significant period and a significant number of tournaments” dating back to 2013. Zulfadli committed more violations over a longer period and it was proven he had manipulated the results of four matches, the BWF said. Their suspension began from January 12, the date on which both players were provisionally suspended by the BWF. Neither player is affiliated with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), but Tan was in Malaysia’s squad for the prestigious Thomas Cup in 2010. He was banned by the BAM from competing in Asian tournaments for two years after quitting the national team in 2011. In 2011, Zulfadli beat current world champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark to clinch the World Junior Championships. Badminton has been hit by cheating scandals before. At the 2012 Olympics, eight women’s doubles players were disqualified for trying to lose group games to gain an easier quarter-final draw. And in 2014 the BW F asked police to investigate claims by two Danish players, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus and Kim Astrup, that they were approached by a Malaysian man to throw matches. McDonald’s torched, hundreds arrested in May Day protests in Paris
PARIS - Nearly 300 protesters were arrested Tuesday after May Day riots in central Paris, where hooded youths torched a McDonald’s restaurant and several vehicles during a march against President Emmanuel Macron’s public sector reforms. Shouting “Rise up, Paris” and “Everyone hates the police”, around 1,200 people in black jackets and face masks joined the traditional May 1 union-led demonstration for workers’ rights, according to a count by Paris police. After trying to hold up the march a group of protesters ran amok along the route, destroying a McDonald’s restaurant near Austerlitz station, east of the city centre, and setting it ablaze. They also torched vehicles at a car dealership, along with a mechanical digger and a scooter, leaving a trail of destruction and plumes of dark smoke billowing into the air. The worst unrest in months in Paris comes at a time of heightened tensions over Macron’s reform of the public sector and follows a showdown between police and anti-capitalist squatters at a sprawling commune in western France. The police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the demonstrators. On Tuesday night 102 people remained in custody out of 276 who were arrested, police said, adding: “31 businesses were damaged, of which two were burned, 6 vehicles were burned and 10 others damaged.” Macron condemned the violence, posting on Twitter during his trip to Australia: “Everything will be done so that the perpetrators are identified and held responsible for their actions.” He added the demonstrations would be treated with “absolute firmness”.

The police had warned of the risk of extremist groups using May Day to set up a rematch of the clashes seen during demonstrations last year over Macron’s labour reforms and at an anti-capitalist camp in western France that was demolished by police earlier this month. “Macron makes us mad,” read a banner held by one masked demonstrator. “We’re tired of this capitalist system that destroys everything and of brutal police repression of all those who oppose it,” a 19-year-old student who was part of the group told AFP. The scenes of looting and destruction overshadowed the May Day march, which drew between 20,000 and 55,000 peaceful protesters according to police and union estimates. Countrywide, around 143,000 people took part in labour marches, according to government estimates, up slightly on 2017. Trade unions and students’ unions have been trying to rally the French against Macron’s shake-up of indebted state rail operator SNCF and access to public universities, which they see as part of a rollback of France’s cherished public service. Polls show the French supporting those reforms but being more critical of Macron’s fiscal policy, seen as favouring the wealthy over the working and middle classes. “Macron is the president of the rich,” Genevieve Durand, a retired public servant who took part in a march in the central city of Clermont-Ferrand, told AFP, echoing a label that has clung to the centrist leader. The energetic 40-year-old, who vowed during campaigning to make France more competitive, has insisted he will not budge from his course. “I’m doing what I said I would,” he said during a recent television interview to mark the first anniversary of his election on May 7. Armenian opposition leader calls for strike after losing PM vote
YEREVAN - Armenia’s political crisis deepened Wednesday as opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan called for protesters to block key transport links after lawmakers rejected his bid to become prime minister. Pashinyan supporters have pledged to ramp up pressure on authorities to force the ruling Republican Party, which withheld support for the protest leader despite tens of thousands massing in the streets, to quit power. “From 8:15 am tomorrow all roads should be blocked, I announce a general strike,” Pashinyan told supporters gathered in the capital Yerevan’s Republic Square late Tuesday. “A revolution of love and tolerance is continuing,” he said, also urging people to block an airport and turn out for a huge rally Wednesday evening as the crowds chanted “Nikol! Nikol!”. Parliament had voted 45 in favour to 55 against Pashinyan, with the Republican Party headed by ousted former prime minister Serzh Sarkisian rejecting his candidacy after hours of deliberation during a day-long special session. “The political force which declared a war against its own people has destroyed itself,” Pashinyan said in parliament after the vote.
“No one will be able to take victory away from the people.” Pashinyan previously warned that the lawmakers’ unwillingness to back him could lead to a “political tsunami”. Armenia has been in the grip of a severe political crisis in recent weeks, with observers and the international community expressing concern that the turmoil could destabilise the small south Caucasus country. Pashinyan, who spearheaded the mass protests that led to the resignation of veteran leader Sarkisian last month, has insisted that only he can rid the poor ex-Soviet nation of corruption and poverty and conduct free and fair elections. He had been thought to be just a handful of votes short of a majority in parliament. Ahead of the vote lawmakers from the Republican Party grilled Pashinyan on a number of technical issues in an apparent effort to make him appear incompetent. “The entire country is united in its demand that the Republicans’ rule must end,” said Laura Shahverdyan, a 22-year-old student. Indian court convicts gangster over journalist murder
An Indian court on Wednesday convicted notorious gangster Chhota Rajan and eight others of murdering a journalist in a drive-by shooting in Mumbai seven years ago. Jyotirmoy Dey, a crime reporter who specialised on gangland activities for the Mid-day tabloid, was shot dead in broad daylight on June 11, 2011. Prosecutors said Rajan had ordered the hit because he was unhappy about negative articles that Dey had written about him.

PADANG - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that flights in West Sumatra Province are operating normally despite Mount Marapi`s eruption at 7:03 a.m. local time, Wednesday. “The Minangkabau Geophysics Agency has yet to receive reports on flight disruptions, (after the eruption),” Budi Samiadji, the head of information and observation, noted during a phone call in Padang on Wednesday. According to the Mount Marapi Observatory Post, the smoke column rose four thousand meters from the crater. However, Samiadji noted that the eruption has not yet affected the climate and other atmospheric conditions in the province. Following the eruption, the Minangkabau Climatology Office has issued an early warning notice on Wednesday (May 2) on the mid- to high-intensity rains during night time in Mentawai Islands, West Pasaman District, Limapuluh Kota District, Agam
District, and Padang Pariaman District. The office has also forecast that winds at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour in the province will move in the northeast direction. On a separate occasion, Hartanto, the volcano observatory official, remarked that during the eruption, Mount Marapi had spewed thick grey volcanic ash and resulted in a quake, with an amplitude of 10 millimeters, that lasted for 485 seconds. Despite the blast, Mount Marapi remains on alert level II since August 2011. Hence, all residents and climbers are not allowed to conduct any activities within a three-kilometer radius of the crater. The authority has also called on the people to stay abreast of the updates and other information on Mount Marapi`s eruption. Before erupting on May 2, Mount Marapi had spewed some volcanic ash on Apr 27. The volcano had also erupted twice last year. (ant)
A special court in India’s financial capital Mumbai found Rajan guilty of ordering the contract killing of the 56-year-old. The underworld don, who was appearing by video link from a New Delhi jail where he is being held, simply said “theek hai” (“OK”) after judge Sameer Adkar read out his verdict. The court also convicted eight henchmen, including four shooters. They and Rajan, who is in his late 50s, are expected to be sentenced later Wednesday. Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat called for life sentences, saying Dey represented “the fourth pillar of democracy”. “The punishment must act as a deterrent,” he told the courtroom. The judge acquitted two others of involvement, including a female journalist who had been accused of conspiring with and abetting Dey’s killers. Jigna Vora, who worked for the Asian Age newspaper, was accused of passing on Dey’s home address and motorcycle registration number to gangsters working
for Rajan. She maintained her innocence throughout the trial and broke down in tears following her acquittal on all charges. Police said Rajan’s gang followed Dey, and shot him five times from behind near his home in the northern Mumbai suburb of Powai. Officers said the gang was paid 500,000 rupees ($11,000) for the killing. They fled to towns around the country in the aftermath, where most of them were arrested. Mid-day said at the time of his death that Dey was “a victim of his fearless journalism”. His murder provoked outrage among Indian journalists, hundreds of whom took to the streets of Mumbai to demand greater protection from the state government and a swift inquiry. Reporters in the world’s largest democracy often face harassment and intimidation by police, politicians, bureaucrats and criminal gangs. Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, was once one of India’s most wanted men and is accused of dozens of gruesome crimes. He was deported from Indonesia in October 2015 after two decades on the run. Rajan was allegedly the right-hand man of Mumbai crime boss Dawood Ibrahim before an acrimonious split following the 1993 bomb blasts in Mumbai -- then known as Bombay -- that killed 257 people. Wednesday’s verdict came on the eve of World Press Freedom Day. More than forty journalists have been killed in India since 1992, according to the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists. (afp)

Pedal power: the rise of cargo bikes in Germany
Whether they’re hauling parcels or children, cargo bikes are becoming a familiar sight in German cities as the nippy, clean alternative to cars and delivery vans -- and shaking up urban transport in the process. A desire to go green has been key to the rise of cargo bikes in a country where dozens of smogchoked cities are considering diesel driving bans to combat air pollution. “The diesel scandal is a major incentive,” said Arne Behrensen, one of the top promotors of cargo bikes in Germany, a mode of transport as old as the bicycle itself which refers to a two- or three-wheeled bike with a fixed load carrier, usually at the front. Financial incentives, more choice in models and the promise of zipping past rush-hour traffic in the bike lane have added to the appeal. “In the ‘90s, we were happy to sell one a year,” said Gaya Schuetze of Berlin’s Mehringhof bicycle shop, one of the capital’s leading cargo bike centres. “Then we noticed more and more interest, first from families and then companies.” Commonplace in northern Europe until the mid-20th century, freight bikes were used to deliver everyday essentials such as milk, bread and newspapers. But these heavy, unwieldy bikes quickly fell out of favour and into oblivion as motorised vehicles gained ground. The cargo bike’s revival began some two decades ago in cycling-mad Denmark and the Netherlands, blessed with flat landscapes and comfortable bike lanes, before reaching Germany. Today Germany is Europe’s largest market for cargo bikes in terms of volume -- with industry data showing sales for electrically assisted cargo bikes alone surged to 21,000 in 2017, 42 percent over the previous year. - No sweat Over the years, cargo bikes have evolved from bulky two-wheelers that required serious leg muscle. Modern upgrades offer lighter frames and more spacious carriers, while e-cargo bikes have allowed the less physically active or those living in hilly areas to also jump in the saddle. Cargo bikes “now reach a wider audience, people who don’t want to arrive at work sweaty or aren’t especially sporty,” said Sophia Becker, a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam near Berlin. According to the European CycleLogistics project, a staggering 174 models of cargo bikes are now available, while some 50 brands vied for attention at Berlin’s International Cargo Bike Festival in April.

Keen to promote the climate-friendly cargo bikes, several initiatives have emerged to lend them to companies and individuals for free trials. Last year, German firm Velogut began loaning them out to 150 companies in Berlin. Among the sign-ups have been photographers, coffee and pastry vendors, florists, chimneysweeps, beekeepers, Christmas tree deliverers and even a travelling anaesthetist. The federal government has also got in on the act by introducing a rebate of up to 2,500 euros for the purchase of an e-cargo bike with a load of more than 150 kilos, while Berlin authorities offer subsidies of 500 to 1,000 euros. - ‘Protect us’ But experts say the biggest roadblock to cargo bikes going mainstream is the lack of adapted infrastructure: safe cycle lanes, secure parking and easy-to-find repair shops.

The Bindu Barong Festival involving young artists of high school and college students looked good at dancing the barong ket. They are not only adept at adapting to the rhythm of gamelan music, but also able to give expression to the barong. Just imagine, the barong ket made of wood can be presented as living object. It happens because they have mastered the dance techniques in terms tetuek, tandang and pedum karang so that it became a very interesting spectacle. Each dancer got the opportunity to make performance for 10-15 minutes consisting of the pepeson (preliminary), pengawak (core), ngintip jangkrik (improvisation with gamelan players) and pekaad (closing). Drum player and dancers were supposedly able to make
improvisation, yet still referred to the pattern of Balinese dance. Well, when the barong dancers were capable to make improvisation with drum players, the audience applauded encouragingly. The Bindu Barong Festival was opened by the Head of the Badung Culture Agency, Ida Bagus Anom Basma, representing the regent of Badung, Friday (Oct. 28) showed off the contest of barong dance and single drum playing. There were 30 participants making their appearance in turns for two days. Each participant consisted of two barong dancers and one drum player. Although they were coalesced into a single team, they did not appear with their partner or came in free fighting. The Bindu Barong Festival was
held by (ST) Dharma Yowana customary youth club of Bindu hamlet, Bhuana Mekar, Abiansemal, Badung, at local Dalem Temple. Other than for commemorating the Youth Pledge Day, the competition also aimed to preserve Balinese arts and increase togetherness and creativity of the youth. “The event is also intended to support Bindu as a tourism village in Badung,” said committee chairman IGA Indra Mahendra. The event was supported by Furama Villas & Spa. In addition to helping preserve the culture as the spirit of Bali tourism, the support is also meant to realize Bindu hamlet as a tourism village. “We strongly support this cultural activity. MOSAIC stone seeking in the sea is not as easy as imagined. It is not limited to resisting the heat of the sun. On Tuesday morning (May 1), the atmosphere on the black sandy beach looked different from before.

The waves were big and rolling. A very loud banging was heard. It came and went. From the east, a number of residents came wearing simple clothes. Almost all put on hats of a large size, covering their face. It is to avoid them from the increasingly stinging sun. Some also carried containers such as small sacks, bamboo woven baskets, and nets. the stones are thrown back because they are not worth selling. A stone seeker, Ketut Mudana, 40, said that such work has been pursued by dozens of residents. There are from Tojan, Gelgel and Satra village. No doubt, the risk is quite high. He also told that since last week they should be more careful. The incident of three residents dragged by waves to death on the beach when doing malukat or purificatory rite is still attached to their mind. “We still remember the incident. So, we should really see the situation,” he said. The stones are sold to collectors. The price is cheap where the smallest ones are sold for the range of IDR 15,000 per container. Meanwhile, the larger ones are sold for about IDR 10,000. “It’s hard to find. Sometimes
within a day we just can collect as much as two containers,” he said. During dozens of years of pursuing the fortune on this beach, he admitted to be grateful. No one is dragged by the waves yet. At best, they are just crashed and suffered minor injuries. “We believe, here is the place to make a living. Definitely, we are kept away from such a thing. We also always ask for salvation,” he added. It is not much different from the narrative of Ni Nengah Kista, 65. The job she pursued does not produce many results. It is just enough to buy two kilogram of rice for the consumption of her family. She remains thankful. “We have been collecting mosaic stone here for decades,” she said. (sos)

S. Korea: US troop withdrawal not linked to possible peace treaty SEOUL - South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday dismissed claims that US troops stationed in the country would have to leave if a peace treaty was signed with the North.
Seoul and Pyongyang have remained technically at war since the 1950s but Moon and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed at a landmark summit last week to work towards a permanent treaty to replace a 65-year-old armistice agreement. “US Forces Korea (USFK) is a matter of the South Korea-US alliance. It has nothing to do with signing a peace treaty,” Moon said, referring to the agreement that sees 28,500 US forces based in the South. Moon’s comments came after a presidential adviser publicly suggested the presence of US soldiers, sailors and airmen would be called into question if a peace treaty were to be agreed with Pyongyang. Moon Chung-in had written in Foreign Affairs magazine that it would be “difficult to justify (US forces) continuing presence in South Korea” after the adoption of a peace treaty. The Blue House -- President Moon’s office -- has warned the adviser “not to cause any more
confusion,” with such comments, spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said. The rebuttal came as Seoul’s defence ministry confirmed that several US fighter jets had arrived in the country to take part in a regular joint exercises. The F-22 “Raptor” stealth fighters last came to the South in December when Seoul and Washington staged their largest-ever joint air exercise, days after North Korea test-fired a missile believed to be capable of hitting the US mainland. Local media reported eight F-22 jets had arrived Sunday at an airbase in the southern city of Gwangju. The North customarily reacts with anger to the deployment of American stealth fighters, which it fears could be used for surgical strikes against its leadership and strategic facilities. SAO PAULO - A 24-storey building used by squatters in the center of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s biggest city, collapsed early Tuesday after a blaze that tore through the structure, leaving at least three missing. Survivors described waking in the night to find themselves surrounded by flames and escaping with their children before the tower turned to rubble. Scores of homeless families were occupying the building, according to officials. However, despite the ferocity of the blaze, only one person was listed as almost certainly dead. “There are some missing, approximately three, with one very likely a fatality,” Ricardo Peixoto, a firefighters’ commander, told AFP. “We don’t know how many people were in the building so we don’t know whether we’ll find more victims in the ruins.” So far, 250 people who’d been living in the building have been registered after the blaze, city security official Jose Roberto said. The fire began overnight and spread rapidly, turning the building into an inferno before it fell down. Dramatic pictures tweeted by the fire service showed flames shooting up the sides of the whole tower, moments before it was reduced to a heap of smoking ruins. An adjacent church was also damaged. “We got the call at around 1:30 am (0430 GMT) and we came at once, a few minutes later, and about five floors of the building were on fire,” Peixoto said. “Fifteen or 20

Mongolians sip ‘oxygen cocktails’ to cope with smog
ULAANBAATAR - Fed up with the smog in Mongolia’s capital, residents have resorted to sipping “lung” tea and “oxygen cocktails” in a desperate bid to protect themselves from pollution, despite health officials saying there is no evidence they work.
Worried parents have held protests to press the government to take action. But some businesses are cashing in, even though a WHO official says there is no evidence that such anti-smog products work.
Ulaanbaatar topped New Delhi and Beijing as the world’s most polluted capital in 2016, UNICEF said in a report warning of a health crisis that has put every child and pregnancy at risk. With residents of so-called ger (slum) districts using coal stoves to cook and heat their homes in the world’s coldest capital, where temperatures can dip as low as -40 Celsius (-40 Fahrenheit), pollution has skyrocketed. While most of the pollution comes from stoves in the gers, road transport and power plants add to the toxic mix. On January 30, air pollution was 133 times higher than the safe limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO). UNICEF reported that cases of respiratory infections have nearly tripled and pneumonia is now the second leading cause of death for children under five.
- ‘Life is air’ -
Advertisements in Mongolia boast that “drinking just one oxygen cocktail is equal to a three-hour-walk in a lush forest”. At the produce section of the State Department Store, blue cans of oxygen called “Life Is Air” are on sale for $2, and promise to turn a glass of juice into a foamy, sweet “oxygen cocktail” after spraying some into a glass through a special straw. Other stores and pharmacies have oxygen cocktail machines that resemble coffee makers and can turn a juice into a frothy drink for $1. Pregnant women are among the most avid customers of the Russian-made product, with some saying they are following their doctor’s orders. Batbayar Munguntuul, a 34-year-old accountant and moth-
er of three, drank oxygen cocktails when she was pregnant, but she ended up spending much more money on medicine. “Every winter we constantly buy medicine,” she told AFP. “It has reached a point that it is like just any other grocery product that you have to buy regularly.” Like many other Mongolians, she has chosen to buy an air purifier to make sure her family breathes clean air at home. Her machine, which filters out toxic fumes, cost her $300. The average level of PM2.5 particles -- which penetrate deep into the lungs -- was 75 micrograms per cubic metre last year, or three times the exposure recommended by the WHO for a 24-hour period. Air pollution has been linked to asthma, bronchitis, and other long-term respiratory diseases. Some Mongolians drinking special teas named Enkhjin, Ikh Taiga, and Dr. Baatar that claim to clean lungs. Dr. Baatar’s CEO, Baatar Chantsaldulam, said sales surge by 20 to 30 percent during winter, when pollution tends to reach its peak. “First it takes all the toxins out of the blood, then it turns the toxins in the lung into mucus, and all the plants in tea helps boost the human immune system,” he told AFP. But Maria Neira, the head of the WHO’s public health department, said the “real solution” to protect the lungs and the cardiovascular system was to reduce air pollution and avoid exposure to it. “The business community will offer plenty of those solutions,” Neira said, referring to the oxygen cocktails and lung teas. “We don’t have any scientific evidence whether they provide any benefit,” she said.

The NGO says the government should give some 200,000 ger residents access to loans so that they install heating insulation and replace their stoves with cleaner heaters. It also complains that a ger relocation plan has been too slow. The government spent $120 million between 2008-2016 to combat pollution, with half of the funds coming out of its foreign aid revenue. Part of the money has gone to distributing low-emission stoves to residents of ger districts. Last year, the parliament approved a tax exemption for companies that sell air purifiers, while Prime Minister Ukhnaa Khurelsukh issued an order to distribute $1.6 million worth of the appliances to all schools. Non-profit organisations are giving away air purifiers and anti-smog masks to schools, kindergartens and hospitals. The non-profit group Smog and Kids donated a South Korean-made air ventilation system to a kindergarten in one of the capital’s most polluted areas, and the difference in air quality inside and outside the classrooms is palpable. Such systems can cost up to $2,500 plus $500 for installation. But Smog and Kids representative Tumendalai Davaadalai said air purifiers were not the answer to the problem. “Mobile air purifiers don’t give oxygen, they’re not plants. The decision by Khurelsukh’s cabinet to distribute air purifiers is a very bad decision,” Davaadalai said. “They are just funding businesses without any positive results.” (afp)

The number was announced in a plenary meeting attended by all the Subdistrict Electoral Committee (PPK), representative of the winning team of the candidate pair and Karangasem Electoral Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu), recently. Through the plenary meeting was obtained the number of male voters namely 190,256 voters and 186,496 female voters. Voting process of the gubernatorial election will be implemented in 945 polls or TPS.
Chairman of the KPU Karangasem, I Made Arnawa, said the DPT is permanent but the number of voters may be more than the ones in the DPT. It happens because currently there are about 258 voters having not done the electronic identity card data capture as one condition to be voters. For the remaining voters, the Karangasem Civil Registry will issue a certificate if they are actually residents of Karangasem and have been recorded in the data of the Civil Registry. For the process of capturing the identity card data, Arnawa said the KPU still gives tolerance until the Election Day
on June 27, 2018. To guarantee their voting rights, KPU will continuously coordinate with the Civil Registry Agency. “We will continuously try those who are really the native citizens to Karangasem and included in the Civil Registry database so as to be able to make identity card data capture. On that account, it becomes a basic requirement to channel the right to vote,” he explained. The Head of the Karangasem Civil Registry Agency, Wayan Sumidia, was unable to give any explanation as when being contacted for several times, he did not respond. (gik)

DENPASAR - Karangasem is the district with the lowest growth in Bali in 2016 namely 5.92 percent. It experienced the lowest growth for three times compared to other districts, namely in 2012 (5.93 percent), 2015 (6.00 percent) and 2016 (5.92 percent). In addition to Karangasem, the districts occupying the lowest growth are Jembrana in 2013 and Bangli in 2014. In the meantime, the highest growth in 2012 was experienced by Badung at 7.64 percent, Buleleng in 2013 (7.15 percent), Denpasar in 2014 (7.00 percent), Gianyar in 2015 (6.34 percent), and in Badung

This is lower than September 2016 with the percentage of 4.15 and
lower than March 2017 at 4.25 percent,” he said. Buleleng district more dominantly in the field of agricultural business in fact has more poor people. According to him, all business sectors promise prosperity if managed well and governance. However, each district/municipality chooses and develops the potential sectors in its own territory. Seeing from the experience of 2017 with the eruption of Mount Agung having very significant impact on the accommodation, food and beverage/tourism, the other business sectors must be
developed. One of the potentials to be developed is agriculture. “Agriculture is one of the potential sources of new growth in Bali. Bali has potential commodities namely cacao and coffee,” he said. The new sources of economic growth can encourage equitable distribution of development. On that account, the gini ratio will be lower or more unbalanced. Besakih village and Pempatan exposed to volcanic ashes
Head of the Mount Agung Monitoring Team at Rendang, Karangasem, Isyak N Danak, said on Tuesday (May 1) the eruption was first marked with the recording of shallow and deep volcanic earthquake for several times and a number of bursts. In addition to recording the earthquake, visually at the peak also occurred gusts for several times. “The eruption occurred on Monday at 22:45. The height of the white and gray ash column reached 1,500 meters. The smoke moved westwards so it did not disturb the flight,” he said. Isyak told that due to the eruption, the Besakih village and surrounding areas were exposed to volcanic ashes. “After the eruption, we deployed the officers to check the ashes at Besakih, and the location was indeed exposed to volcanic ashes, but the ashes remain thin,” he said. He explained that until now the status of Mount Agung has not been lowered to advisory considering many deep volcanic earthquakes are still recorded. There are still energy pressures underneath. Besides, the hole or gap in the bottom of the crater remains open. So, the potential for the occurrence of further eruption
stays quite large. However, his agency cannot ensure when the eruption will occur again. Clearly, a small eruption still potentially occurs again considering the activity of Mount Agung remains quite high. “We have not been able to ascertain the decline of the status. Previously, the seismograph indeed did not record the occurrence of volcanic earthquakes. But now the volcanic earthquake returned to happen. So, we cannot confirm when the status will be lowered as the status decline very much depends on the volcano. We will continuously monitor the development. If the volcanic activities decrease, there will be an evaluation by the team to lower the status. Conversely, if the volcanic activities increase significantly, the status is raised again,” he concluded. Although the people who live around the Mount Agung are seen to have getting used to the current volcanic situation, they are still appealed to always be vigilant. In addition, he also advised people not to climb the mountain top because the volcanic activities has not been completely normal “We are calling on so that no one gets closer to the top because the eruption can happen any time. Unfortunately, some people are still desperate to climb to the top and we cannot do much. Most importantly, we have appealed them not to approach the radius of 4 km,” said Isyak. A resident of Puregai hamlet, Pempatan, Rendang, I Wayan Wardana, said that in the area there was an ash rain due to the eruption of Mount Agung which returned to happen on Sunday night. “The ash exposure falling remained thin and people are not panicked because of this ash. As happened on Monday (Apr. 30), the volcano with the height of 3,142 meters above sea level returned to erupt. The raised solfatara smoke cloud reached a height of 1,500 meters moving westwards. The eruption caused some villages at Besakih and Pempatan village to be exposed to volcanic ashes.

Ahead of anniversary, penjor begins to decorate Bangli town
BANGLI - On Tuesday (May 1), Bangli town looked a little different than usual. A number of penjor paraphernalia began to adorn the town of Bangli. The ornamental penjor of various designs are installed in order to enliven the 814th anniversary of Bangli whose peak will be celebrated on May 10. As seen last Monday, a number of ornamental penjor paraphernalia looked to have been installed in front of the office of Bangli regent and around the Captain Mudita Square. The penjor paraphernalia were installed by contest participants, namely the local agencies, villages and schools from Monday (Apr. 30). In addition to penjor, Bangli town is also fitted with banners, umbul-umbul and red-white flags to mark the anniversary. Division Head of Protocol, Cooperation and Public Communication, Regional Secretary of Bangli, Cok Bagus Gaya Dirga, said that to celebrate the anniversary of Bangli town this year, the Regional Secretary as the Chairman of the Permanent Committee of the Anniversary of Bangli town issued Circular No. 09 / Pan.HUT.Bgl / 2018 dated on April 23, 2018. In the circular the committee expects the participation of the entire community to enliven the anniversary of Bangli town by decorating offices, schools, hamlet hall, shops and others. 103 Chinese nationals arrested for alleged cyber fraud

DENPASAR - The 92 men and 11 women were arrested in two houses in Denpasar and another house in Badung regency. Police also arrested 11 Indonesians who were allegedly working for the Chinese nationals. “They were targeting Chinese nationals living in [China]. They were working from abroad to make it harder for the Chinese police to track them. They did not just operate in Indonesia; many of them had worked in other countries,” said the Bali Police’s special crime director, Sr. Comr. Anom Wibowo. Anom added that the suspects had contacted their victims in China by phone, pretending to be the authorities. “They had many ways to trick their victims. They told the victims that a family member had gotten
into an accident and needed money for emergency medical treatment. Or they threatened their victims and extorted them,” he said. The arrest was the result of a joint investigation conducted by the Bali Police’s special crime directorate, the Counter Transnational and Organized Crime (CTOC) task force and the SABATA antibandits, street crime and anarchism unit. “The investigation took time. We saw suspicious behavior from these people [that] was similar to other fraudulent cyber activities previously uncovered in Bali,”
Anom said. The police later raided three houses in connection to the case on Tuesday, seizing multiple mobile phones, routers and laptops allegedly used to commit fraud.
