NEW YORK — Michael “Flea” Balzary of the Red Hot Chili Peppers has embarked on a “sacred” mission: writing a memoir. The 51-year-old bassist has a deal with Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group. Grand Central announced Tuesday that the book, currently untitled, would be a window into Flea’s “intense and dynamic life.” He will cover his years with singer Anthony Kiedis and his “tumultuous” path with the Red Hot Chili Peppers over the past three decades. The band has sold more than 80 million records and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. In a statement released through the publisher, Flea says he regards books as “sacred” and that they had helped shape his identity. No release date has been set for his memoir.

NEW YORK — For the latest Marvel release, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” most fan boys might prefer a Consumer Reports-style product review. New character introductions: Smooth. Action sequences: Excellent if sometimes lacking finesse. Viewer satisfaction: Likely high. Box-office prospects: Bankable. Teasers for future Marvel installments: Yes, two. With slick design and plushy interiors, “The Winter Soldier” is an excellent product. But is it a good movie? Are the two indistinguishable at this point? Like the recent “Thor: The Dark World,” ‘’Winter Soldier” is a sequel to a pre-”Avengers” franchise starter. The earlier “Captain America: First Avenger” was a mostly clever period film, set in the ‘40s and awash with a charming WWII thriller nostalgia. “Winter Soldier” brings Steve Rogers — the weakling recruit made a brawny Greatest Generation icon, played by Chris Evans — up to present day for a Washington D.C. conspiracy thriller. Fittingly, Marvel has attracted the default hero of such films, Robert Redford. He’s a major get for the franchise, especially since (unlike in last year’s “All is Lost”) he’s actually talking now. While Rogers runs laps around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and jots notes on the pop culture he missed while frozen for 70 years, there’s trouble brewing at S.H.I.E.L.D. Its head, Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson), believes something is amiss with the agency’s latest project: a trio of “helicarriers” that can kill evildoers from the sky even before the evil is done. It’s in this way that Marvel films use a complicated current-events issue — NSA-like spying — to feign contemporary relevance. It’s

the appearance of having something to say. Captain America, a stand-in for a more innocent, noble America, wonders if the helicarriers are like “holding a gun to everyone on Earth and calling it protection.” But that’s about the extent of such talk in “Winter Soldier”: a political thriller without the politics. (Be warned: some small spoilers follow.) Fury, having doubted the project, finds himself a hunted man. Captain America is left to investigate with only a few trustworthy friends: Scarlett Johansson’s scarlet-haired former KGB agent Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. the Black Widow (an “Avengers” toss-in, added like a dash of paprika) and Anthony Mackie’s veteran Sam Wilson (a welcome newbie). The best thing “Winter Soldier” has going for it is its cast, a uniformly likable bunch, particularly the winning Mackie, whose character dons mechanical wings to become the Falcon. And then there’s Redford, who plays Alexander Pierce, a S.H.I.E.L.D. director. Redford, naturally, classes up the joint. Historically, in films like “Three Days of the Condor” and “All the President’s Men,” he’s been the regular guy fighting government conspiracy — which makes his duplicitous turn in “Winter Soldier” exciting. Like Jackson, he lends a gravitas to the film that it perhaps doesn’t quite deserve.

MANGUPURA - On the day after Nyepi or Ngembak Geni, the residents of Semate customary village, Abianbase village, Mengwi, held a unique tradition called mbed-mbedan. Hundreds of people poured in front of the Desa temple or local Puseh Temple to follow the tradition resembling a sport of tug of war. This tradition aimed to pleading salvation and grace of God. The series of mbed-mbedan began with praying in the Desa/ Puseh Temple. The residents totally consisting of 65 households were carrying a ceremonial means tipat bantal (rice bag) to be presented to

local deities. After that, residents led to front space of the temple located on the Kapal-Abianbase road section to hold the mbed-mbedan. Mbed-mbedan at Semate customary village is similar to tug of war.

However, a special rope is in use taken from spreading trees called bun kalot growing at the graveyard area of Semate. The tradition on last Tuesday was followed by younger generation, older people, both men and women. Even, the customary apparatus and community leaders also participated in enlivening the atmosphere such as Chief of Abianbase customary village doubling as Chairman of the Badung House I Made Sunarta. All villagers seemed very excited to pull the bun kalot rope. Each end of bun kalot was held by each opponent

with the number of participants and of the same strength. After the cue was started, each participant showed off their strength. The rope was pulled with all their strength. The joy was evident when both camps were busy pulling the rope. The game was over when the participants managed to pull the rope held by the opponent. After mbed-mbedan, all residents re-assembled in the temple while enjoying a secondhand tipat bantal together. The hospitality and togetherness actually looked at the ceremony. “Here, there is no

winning or losing team. All mixed together to express gratitude for the gift bestowed by God. I really hope this long dormant tradition can remain stable,” said Made Sunarta. Chief of Semate customary village I Gede Suryadi explained that mbed-mbedan posed an ancestral tradition. This tradition or ceremony had been nullified for a long time and had just been revived since the past few years. It was associated with the presence of Semate customary village. Continued on page 6

Tektekan neutralizes negative aura at Kediri customary village Bali Post

TABANAN - Though having agreed to nullify the ogohogoh (papier mâché demon) parade, the Kediri customary village remained to fill in the Pengerupukan activities ahead of Nyepi by displaying tektekan sacred art tradition, Sunday (Mar 30). The tektekan displayed by each hamlet at Kediri customary village is not the same as the tektekan existing in other areas designated as entertainment. This tektekan cannot be played carelessly and should only be played on particular time. It is said the tektekan can only be played if the condition of local village is experiencing a disaster like famine or plague. That is why this tradition is highly anticipated by the public outside as entertainment, but very avoidable and not expected by customary villagers of Kediri because it means the disaster is happening. Chief of Kediri customary village, AA Ngurah Panji, when asked about the sacred tradition explained the tektekan was intended to conquest pest and disease and neutralize the negative aura occurred at the village. No one knew when this tradition first appeared. Even, one of the temple priests aged 90 years old who asked about the tradition

did not know clearly the tektekan tradition. However, until the age of 51 years, he had seen this tektekan tradition to be performed for many times. “Nobody knows about the exact history of this tradition. From the parents’ stories, it has been inherited from generation to generation. The emergence of tektekan can never be predicted. It was usually preceded by a plague happened at the village,” he said. He recounted that tektekan was originally played by children. When the tektekan players fell into trance, the players were then taken over by the adults, including the elderly, men and women. Initially, the tektekan utilized a bamboo kulkul (split drum) and okokan, a kind of traditional musical instrument also doubling as cowbell obtained by borrowing from outside the village. “In terms of tradition, the tektekan is played by using tools such as bamboo kulkul and okokan. Even, the okokan can

The growth sustained by consumption sector will even trigger high levels of unemployment and poverty,” he said.

He argued many things could be done by Bali government to equalize the economy of Bali. Among them, it could build roads to minimize the distribution cost of farmer products from rural areas to urban areas, improve the quality of human resources and provide tax relief to farmland. “Economic equality of Bali is not seen from the growth, but how much of that growth can be enjoyed by people of lower classes to the upper. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Deep water search for jet could turn on robot subs

Two miles down or more and darker than night, the ocean becomes a particularly challenging place for human searchers. If the wreckage of a missing Malaysian airliner rests somewhere in the Indian Ocean’s depths, then investigators will likely need to entrust the hunt at least partly to robot submarines and the scientists who deploy them to scan remote swaths of the seafloor.

DENPASAR - More tourists from East Asia are expected to visit Bali as a result of Dragonair’s opening of the round-trip Hong Kong-Denpasar route in April 2014.

Such unmanned subs, called autonomous underwater vehicles or AUVs, played a critical role in locating the carcass of a lost Air France jet in 2011, two years after it crashed in the middle of the south Atlantic. The find allowed searchers to recover the black boxes that revealed the malfunctions behind the tragedy. That search keyed off critical information: The search area for the Air France jet was much smaller than that for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, and the first pieces of wreckage were recovered within days of the crash. Even then, it required two years and four deep water search missions before a team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, using an AUV equipped with side-scan sonar, located the jet about 12,800 feet (3,900 meters) underwater. “Air France 447 is a bit different from Malaysian Air 370 in that we had a few more clues to work with,” said Dave Gallo, who led the search team from Woods Hole, located on Massachusetts’ Cape Cod. The independent research institution has offered its services to investigators but has not been asked to join the current search effort. Before unmanned subs can be sent down to look for the Malaysian jet, the search zone must be narrowed considerably. The size of the search area changes daily because of factors such as currents; on Wednesday it was 221,000 square kilometers (85,000 square miles). But if investigators can zero in on an approximate crash location, they will likely turn to AUVs to begin the methodical task of tracking back and forth across miles of ocean floor in search of anomalies that might be wreckage. “I like to think of it as mowing the lawn. You want to cover every bit of it,” Gallo said.

NEW YORK — Microsoft is following through on a promise to update its Windows 8 operating system on a regular basis to respond to consumers’ complaints and other feedback. Just months after the release of Windows 8.1, Microsoft is preparing changes to make it easier for people to use Windows with traditional keyboard and mouse controls. Among other things, Microsoft will add search, power and settings buttons to the Start page, so people don’t have to figure out how to pull those functions from the right side of their screens. The update also promises easier ways to close apps. Microsoft Corp. outlined some of the new features at a February conference in Barcelona, Spain, and will likely provide more details Wednesday as the company opens its annual Build software developers conference in San Francisco. The new, yet-unnamed update is expected soon. It follows the

October debut of Windows 8.1, which came just a year after the release of Windows 8. The pattern contrasts with Microsoft’s past habit of waiting years to release major updates. Microsoft is also updating its Windows Phone system to work better in corporate environments. The company will add VPN support, for instance, to allow phones to connect with corporate networks securely. There will also be features that consumers in fast-growing emerging markets desire, including the ability for phones to have two SIM cards so people can switch carrier plans easily for the best deals. The company hasn’t announced pricing or specific availability for either update, but both are likely to be free downloads, based on past practice. They could be available as early as this month and will be among the first major software releases since Satya Nadella became Microsoft’s CEO in February. It follows Nadella’s unveiling last week of Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps for Apple’s iPad.

Dragonair, a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, has planned to launch direct flights to Denpasar, Bali, next April, Cathay Pacific Country Manager in Indonesia Patton Chan said recently. “Denpasar will become the first destination for Dragonair in Indonesia,” Patton Chan said. Cathay Pacific, which has served the Hong Kong-Denpasar route for a long time, and Dragonair will continue to serve the Hong Kong-Bali route, operating nine flights per week. Other airlines currently serving the direct routes of ChinaIndonesia include Garuda Indonesia, Hong Kong Airlines and Tigerair Mandala. Pangestu, Tuesday (Apr 1). According to the Minister, so far from the existing data the foreign tourist arrival from month to month indeed tended to fluctuate. As seen in February, compared to foreign tourist visit in previous month (January) reached 753,079 people, and then there was a decrease of 6.6 percent. Contribution of tourism sector to the economy was expected to reach 8.1 percent. “So we have a chance to achieve this quite open projection due to the competitiveness of Indonesian tourism continues to improve. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A police investigation may never determine the reason why the Malaysia Airlines jetliner disappeared, and search planes scouring the Indian Ocean for any sign of its wreckage aren’t certain to find anything either, officials said Wednesday. The assessment by Malaysian and Australian officials underscored the lack of knowledge authorities have about what happened on Flight 370. It also points to a scenario that becomes more likely with every passing day — that the fate of the Boeing 777 and the 239 people on board might remain a mystery forever. The plane disappeared March 8 on a flight to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur after its transponders, which make the plane visible to commercial radar, were shut off. Military radar picked up the jet just under an hour later, on the other side of the Malay peninsula. Authorities say until then its “movements were consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane” but have not ruled out anything, including mechanical error. Police are investigating the pilots and crew for any evidence

suggesting they may have hijacked or sabotaged the plane. The backgrounds of the passengers, two-thirds of whom were Chinese, have been checked by local and international investigators and nothing suspicious has been found. “Investigations may go on and on and on. We have to clear every little thing,” Inspector General Khalid Abu Bakar told reporters in Kuala Lumpur. “At the end of the investigations, we may not even know the real cause. We may not even know the reason for this incident.” Police are also investigating the cargo and the food served on the plane to eliminate possible poisoning of passengers and crew, he said. The search for the plane began over the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea where the plane’s last communications were, and then shifted west to the Strait of Malacca where it was last spotted by military radar. Experts then analyzed hourly satellite “handshakes” between the plane and a satellite and now believe it crashed somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. A search there began just over two weeks ago, and now involves at least nine ships and nine planes.

World Bank to double lending to emerging economies

WASHINGTON - The World Bank plans to nearly double its annual lending to emerging economies like China and India as part of its effort to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030. The Bank announced Tuesday that it would add $100 billion to its lending capacity for middle-income countries over the next 10 years. That would allow it to expand its lending to those countries from $15 billion to as much as $28 billion each year. The move follows in the wake of the bank’s raising $52 billion in resources for the poorest countries announced in December. The new expansion is for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the World Bank’s arm for working with emerging economies. It will take the Bank’s annual lending capacity to all borrowers to $70 billion from today’s $45-50 billion. “We are strengthening our financial house to make sure that we have the capability and financial firepower to scale up our revenue

and build our capital if we are going to meet some of the great needs in the developing world,” said Bank President Jim Yong Kim. The Bank also increased its limit on borrowing from the largest emerging-market countries -Brazil, China, Mexico, India and Indonesia -- by $2.5 billion each, but accompanied by a higher loan cost as well.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said consumer price inflation in its 34 member countries slowed to 1.4 percent in February from 1.7 percent in January. Low inflation has become a key concern for many developed countries. If consumers and businesses put off purchases in the hope of cheaper deals later, that can hurt growth. An outright drop in prices, called deflation, can be very hard to reverse. Japan was

stuck in deflation for about two decades, during which time its economy barely grew. The U.S. inflation rate was 1.1 percent in February, while the European Union’s was just 0.8 percent, well below the 2 percent many economists deem a suitable level. The OECD, a think-tank for t h e w o r l d ’s m o s t d e v e l o p e d countries, said however that excluding volatile food and energy prices, core inflation for its 34 members was stable for a fourth month running at 1.6 percent. Inflation in G-20 countries, which includes major developing countries such as Indonesia, India and Brazil, slowed to 2.3 percent in February from 2.6 percent in January, the OECD said.

“As usual, the problem of garbage after Nyepi is a tough task for us because the volume of rubbish can reach three times more than usual,” said the Head of Tabanan Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Supanji, Tuesday (Apr 1). He even predicted the waste problem could happen at the longest for a week ahead, considering the day after Nyepi, there were ceremonies at a number of places as it coincided with an Anggarakasih feast day. Responding to the surge in the volume of waste estimated to reach 1,200 cubic meters, his party had deployed approximately 186 janitors to work overtime. The amount had included janitors usually found in the morning and evening. “Shift indeed has been added. If it is usually only in the morning and evening, it is now increased to five shifts, two shifts in the morning, once at noon, and twice more in the afternoon,” he said. Supanji said the additional shift was done considering on typical days the volume of rubbish in Tabanan normally reached about 400 cubic meters of the city alone. “But at this time, we have ordered the janitors to work overtime,” he explained. With the addition of these shifts, Supanji claimed there would be compensation for his personnel in the form of additional food allowance. However, he could not ascertain the exact amount of compensation to be received by the personnel. “Their food allowance will be increased. But I do not know exactly,” he added. Further he said the efforts to handle the surge of rubbish had been carried out ranging from Pengerupukan night, after the ogoh-ogoh parade downtown. JAKARTA - Indonesia warned Wednesday that it could be hit by a small tsunami generated by an 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck off Chile’s Pacific coast, and told residents to stay away from beaches. Tsunami waves up to half a metre (1.6 feet) high “will possibly affect several areas in Indonesia” from early Thursday, said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. The quake struck late Tuesday, sending tsunami waves of more than two metres crashing into Chile’s northern coast. At least five people have been killed, panicked crowds have fled and some northern areas of the country have been declared a disaster zone. Nugroho said that the first tsunami waves could arrive at around 5:00 am Thursday (2200 GMT Wednesday) in the eastern region of Papua, and that authorities in 19 provinces of Indonesia -- which is thousands of miles (kilometres) away from where the quake struck -- had been alerted. “We are urging the provincial and district governments within these areas

to take precautions by urging people to stay away from beaches,” he said in a statement. Other areas that could be affected by the tsunami include parts of the main island of Java, the resort island of Bali, central Sulawesi island, and the Indonesian part of Borneo island, he said. “People must remain calm,” he said, adding that no one had so far been evacuated. Indonesia is frequently hit by earthquakes and is home to scores of active volcanoes, as it sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide. RATENGGARO - Two teams of tribesmen on horseback charge at each other hurling bamboo spears in a thousand-year-old ritual on the Indonesian island of Sumba aimed at producing a prosperous rice harvest. Spectators, their mouths reddened from chewing betel nut, scream them on from the sidelines of the show in Ratenggaro village, reaching for their machetes when a rider is struck at close range and the referee calls foul play. The annual “pasola” -- which comes from the word “spear” in a local tribal language -- takes place over four weeks in February and March in western Sumba, an island in the centre of the sprawling Indonesian archipelago. Traditionally it was a barely disguised form of human sacrifice in which tribesmen would aim to spill each other’s blood onto the fields. It has evolved into a mock-up of such battles and people are not usually badly hurt, although accidental deaths

do occasionally occur. The spectacle attracts few foreign tourists -- only around 10 were at the recent pasola in Ratenggaro and up to 100 normally attend larger ones. But now officials are hoping to use it to boost the economy of the desperately poor island, which is dependent on subsistence rice and corn farming and woven rattan goods that yield few profits. “It’s a major attraction and has huge potential for development,” said Bona Fantura Rumat, from the tourism board of East Nusa Tenggara province, which includes Sumba. Despite its pristine beaches, azure seas and traditional villages, last year Sumba attracted around 2,500 tourists -- compared to more than three million who visited the nearby resort island of Bali. Rumat said plans are afoot to promote the pasola more, improve infrastructure by building better roads and start flights to more destinations in Indonesia to make Sumba easier to reach, as well as to Darwin in northern Australia.

The ritual itself has already been adapted to make it more palatable to visitors. In the past it would typically end with a field drenched in human and horse blood, and it was a great honour for local villagers to die while taking part. At the recent Ratenggaro pasola, no one reported much more than a scratch and the villagers now use blood solely from sacrificed animals, instead of a mix of human and animal blood as they did in the past. Before the pasola, men in a darkened hut chopped off the heads of chickens, draining their blood into buckets as a mystic chanted. A dog and pig whose blood had already been drained were roasted on a fire, to be shared and eaten after the festivities. The spears have also been blunted and metal tips removed. In Ratenggaro, policemen armed with rifles ensured that no one was hacked to death -- although a minor punch-up still ensued. There have also been changes in

the planning of the event. It traditionally only began the day after a certain type of seaworm swam to the shore -which signified the end of wet season and the beginning of crop planting -- but now elders decide on the date in advance so tourists have enough time to plan their trips. They still collect the worms, however -- the more there are the better the harvest -- and the slimy blue and green creatures are cooked into patty cakes. Risk of Westernisation

Despite the changes, many Sumbanese believe the pasola is still as spiritually rich as ever and have given a cautious welcome to the idea of increasing tourism. “If there is anyone who takes part in the pasola with an unclean heart, then harm will come to them,” said Ratenggaro village elder Agustinus Pandak, wearing a bright orange weaving wrapped around his head. “They might fall off their horse, be hurt when struck by a spear. But this won’t happen if the rider is at

peace with himself and his heart is full of love,” he said. Pandak added he was happy for steps to be taken to attract more people to the pasola, “as long as it’s developed with respect to our culture”. For many foreigners who do make the journey to Sumba, the island’s underdeveloped tourism industry is precisely what they like about it. “If it develops, I hope they go for dirt-cheap accommodation and luxury resorts, because anything in between you’ll get a mass appeal and swift Westernisation, pushing every ounce of local culture out the window,” said Swedish backpacker Christoffer Kullman, 26, who was at the Ratenggaro pasola. His travel companion, Linus Strandholm, experienced at firsthand that the modern version of the pasola is not entirely safe -- he was struck in the chest by a spear and hit in the head with a rock. “I’ve saved the rock as a souvenir,” he said, adding it was all part of the experience.

SAO PAULO — Local organizers of the World Cup are adding safety features where a worker died in the stadium hosting the tournament’s opening match, hoping to quickly reverse an order that has halted construction in part of the arena. The addition of new safety rails Tuesday came a day after state labor officials said the installation of 20,000 temporary seats at Itaquerao stadium could not continue until safety concerns were addressed. On Saturday, a 23-year-old worker died when he fell about 26 feet while installing seats. After a meeting with building executives, Sao Paulo state labor ministry officials said the work stoppage was expected to continue until next week. Construction in the rest of the stadium, which is already delayed, would continue as scheduled. Fast Engenharia, the company in charge of the temporary seating, is expected to present a new safety plan Thursday to show that all necessary measures will be implemented. Work would resume once the plan is approved and put into practice. The company reiterated that all of its safety measures were in accordance with Brazilian regulations. Before the accident, FIFA expected the stadium to be ready about a month ahead of the June 12 opening match between Brazil and Croatia. Sao Paulo’s vice mayor predicted the stoppage in installing temporary seats would not cause significant delays to finishing the stadium. “It’s not a complex situation,” Nadia Campeao told Radio Estadao. “Even if work is stopped for a few days so the recommended adjustments can be made, it shouldn’t alter the final timetable.” FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, and the local World Cup organizing committee said they supported authorities’ efforts to protect worker safety.
