‘Logan’ a satisfying end for Jackman’s Wolverine

Young ‘Moonlight’ stars return from Oscars to middle school MIAMI GARDENS — Seventh-graders Alex Hibbert and Jaden Piner returned to middle school Wednesday as stars of an Oscarwinning film, but the “Moonlight” actors still had to go back to basics with their classmates in drama class. At Norland Middle School, they followed acting teacher Tanisha Cidel’s directions to crawl on the floor like lions and recite the tongue-twister “red leather, yellow leather” faster and faster. Cidel played a principal in the film that also won Oscars for best supporting actor and best adapted screenplay. “The key here is not to pretend,” she told her students. “The key here is to be real. Honest.” In the communities where “Moonlight” was filmed, the movie has been lauded this week for its honest representation of life in black Miami, long overshadowed by the city’s glitzy hotels and hipster neighborhoods. Writer-director Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney, whose play “Moonlight” is based on, both grew up in the Liberty City streets and schools depicted on screen. “It shows that Liberty City is not really a bad place and you can’t judge it by the news,” 12-year-old Alex said. “When you watch ‘Moonlight,’ you find the beauty of Liberty City.” “Moonlight” follows the life of a young black man — played as a child by Alex — as he grows up in poverty and comes to terms with his own homosexuality. Jaden plays his classmate. Thirteen-year-old Jaden said he could relate to his character’s desire to help a friend, but Alex said the bullying his character suffers fortunately wasn’t something he had experienced. Both boys said they figured it was a joke when the audience was belatedly told the top award went to “Moonlight” and not “La La Land.” In the confusion, they had to jump over other audience members to join the rest of their cast onstage. “I jumped over this guy, and he was screaming, ‘What the --?’ and I was like, ‘I’m sorry, I just won an award!’” Alex said.(ap)

Featuring Hugh Jackman’s final turn as Wolverine, “Logan” isn’t a shiny, colorful, superherostyle film, either. It’s gritty, dark, and a deeply satisfying conclusion for fans who’ve followed the clawed character through Jackman’s past eight movie outings with the X-Men and alone as Wolverine. Writer-director James Mangold, who also directed 2013’s “The Wolverine,” clearly loves the character as much as Jackman does, and both seem liberated by this film’s R rating. “Logan” is not a kids’ movie. It’s viscerally violent — lots of claws-through-the-face shots — and emotionally profound as it explores the relationship between Logan and Professor X (Patrick Stewart). Viewers would need some basic familiarity with these characters to fully appreciate the story told in “Logan.” If you don’t know anything about the relationship between the title mutant and Charles Xavier (Stewart), the arc they experience in this film would be far less impactful. Saudi king signs range of deals in Indonesia at start of visit

BOGOR - Saudi Arabia’s King Salman held talks with Indonesia’s president on Wednesday and signed a range of cooperation agreements at the beginning of a 12-day visit to the world’s largest Muslimmajority country. The royal visit is the first by a Saudi monarch in nearly five decades.

The leaders oversaw, among 11 pacts, the signing of agreements to take down trade barriers and a new agreement between state energy companies Saudi Aramco and Pertamina, building on an existing $6 billion plan to expand Indonesia’s biggest refinery. The octogenarian king arrived at a military air base in the capital, Jakarta, earlier on Wednesday and descended slowly from the plane on an escalator before being met by President Joko Widodo who escorted him along a red carpet flanked by guards to a limousine. King Salman is being accompanied by an entourage that Indonesian officials have said could number up to 1,500. His party is bringing 459 tons of luggage and equipment, including two luxury cars, according to media. The king was also greeted by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Jakarta’s Christian governor, who is on trial for allegedly insulting the Koran. King of Saudi special mission: interested in investing in tourism sector

MANGUPURA - The arrival of the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in Bali on March 4th to the 9th is not only to enjoy a vacation, but is also part of his mission to invest in the tourism sector.

Prior to the arrival of the royal and his entourage in Bali, a team of Saudi Arabians had already come to survey areas for potential tourism development in Bali and Lombok. The Saudi team visitred Nusa Dua and the area of Mandalika. “Actually, he is coming not just for a vacation but also for investment”, said Deputy Director of ITDC, Jatmiko K. Santosa, on Wednesday (Mar. 1). Later, it will be decided where and how much will be invested in the tourism sector. Initial location surveys have been carried out that will be reported to the king of Saudi Arabia. Santosa that this information was also communicated to royal authorities and that depending on the decision that how things will look will depend on the decisions that are made. “As the name implies, investment cannot be implemented quickly. Surely long-term and comprehensive considerations are required. There seems to be serious discussion on the matter, given that previously one of the princes of Saudi Arabia had himself visited Lombok”, he explained. In addition to the area of Nusa Dua, the ITDC

is also currently developing the area of Mandalika Lombok, Bromo and Semeru. However, according to Santosa, the area of Mandalika is most ready for cooperation. This area has therefore been further promoted to the expansion team of the the Saudi Arabian Kingdom. The area of Mandalika was designed with the concept of a Muslim-friendly hub with places to pray, find halal food and other related needs. The Local people frequently call it halal hub, but the concept is ‘Muslim-friendly hub’. “Conceptually, the development of a Islamic center that reportedly is to be made in cooperation with Indonesia would fit with Mandalika. A mosque has been created in an area of some 50 hectares”, he said. Building the Mandalika tourism resort requires an investment of some IDR 10 trillion. However, this entire amount need not be made by a single party and the master plan that has been initiated must be referred to. “If they want to build high-end hotels, Muslimfriendly hotels or three-star hotels, they have been arranged in a special zone. Now, it depends on the investors as to what kind of hotels will be built”, he admitted. King Salman to visit Besakih

Karangasem police make preparations

AMLAPURA - Security forces in Bali are excited to welcome the visit of the king of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud. This includes the Karangasem police who have been preparing intensively for the potential visit of the 81-year-old king. A number of things make the eastern tip of the Island of Bali a place that King Salman would want to visit. Karangasem has many tourist attractions that are famous worldwide such as Tenganan Pegringsingan and Besakih Temple. Chief of Karangasem Police, Sugeng Sudarso, after leading the assembly for Operation Sympathetic on Wednesday (Mar. 1) said that so far there has been no information regarding whether or not the King of Saudi Arabia will visit Karangasem. Nevertheless, the Karangasem police are making themslves ready for this possibility with safeguards set in place. “Normally, when foreign diplomats come to Bali, they tend to visit Besakih and Tenganan. Who knows if he will do the same”, he said. The Police chief was reluctant to divulge the safeguard formula that will be put in place should the Saudi Arabian entourage visit Karangasem. Karangasem Police have clearly

increased their security standards in the last week. Padangbai Harbor and traditional harbors are of major concern. Besides, the security in marine areas is also being carried out by increasing the intensity with which the water police are patrolling. “Since last Saturday we have intensified security at Padangbai”, he explained. Operation Sympathetic has also been preparing for the same purpose. According to the police chief, a total of 99 personnel are being deployed to make sure the operation is successful over the next few weeks (until March 21). They are also aiming to decrease the number of traffic accidents and hope that such a decrease will also improve the image of Karangasem as a safe place. Sympathetic Operation is placing emphasis on giving reprimands and guidance, which does not be that enforcement will be ignored. Any violations that have the potential to cause accidents will not be tolerated. Decisive action is being taken because the number of traffic accidents has tended to increase over the past two months. “In general, road conditions in Karangasem are good, as a consequence however motorcyclists tend to ride faster here”, he said. Australian woman apologizes over death of policeman on Bali

BALI — An Australian woman on trial with her British boyfriend in the death of a police officer on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali expressed deep regret Tuesday and apologized, but said she did not personally kill the victim. Prosecutors are seeking eightyear prison terms for Sara Connor and David James Taylor, who were arrested last August in the death of traffic police officer Wayan Sudarsa, whose bloodied body was found on the beach outside the Pullman Hotel in the popular tourist area of Kuta. They are charged with committing violence leading to death, which carries a maximum 12-year prison term under Indonesia’s criminal code. “If this is what God had planned for my life, to punish me so harshly and deprive my children of their mother, I hope he will give my children the strength to cope,” Connor, weeping, told Denpasar District Court in her defense plea. Connor, 46, said she believed her boyfriend when he told her the assault was not serious. Taylor has admitted hitting the Indonesian repeatedly with a cell-

phone, binoculars and a broken beer bottle, leaving him face down and unconscious. But he said he didn’t realize Sudarsa would die. Connor and Taylor had been drinking beer on the beach in the hours before the late-night incident. Taylor has said he got into a fight with Sudarsa, who was on duty, after Connor realized she had lost her handbag and accused Sudarsa of being a fake police officer and stealing it. Connor said she never tried to escape, even though she said she could have fled using her Italian passport which has a different surname. “I deeply regret and I apologize for any mistakes made unknowingly and unintentionally by me but none of my actions caused the death of the victim,” she said. “I feel terribly sorry for all the pain that this situation has created.” She expressed deep condolences and sadness to the victim’s family, to the Balinese people, to Indonesia, and to her family, especially her children. TABANAN - In the provincial and district spatial plan, the Yeh Gangga Beach is designated as special tourist attraction (KDTWK) of Tanah Lot. With this status, the development on this coastal area is directed for small investment. Head of the Tabanan Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda), I.B Wiratmaja, said on Tuesday (Feb. 28) that KDTWK itself is a tourist attraction area specially arranged to the environmental function and environmental resources. It is different from designation of coastal areas ranging from Kelating to Lalang Linggah included in the tourism area. “Tourism area is dominantly intended for the tourism-supporting development. So, in the tourism area is allowed to build hotels over five-star. However, in the KDTWK is not allowed and the designation has been specifically set forth,” said Wiratmaja. This status is also different from that of Tanah Lot tourist attraction.

With this status, the point set is the tourist object, not the region. As a result, the development of tourism-supporting facilities is more focused to support the tourist objects and does not cover the area as wide as that having the status as tourism area. To support of Yeh Gangga Beach as the KDTWK, currently the beach commonly becoming the location of lobster fishermen to rely on their livelihood is designated as supporting tourism area of Tanah Lot. Reuters reported late last month that asylum seekers were being repeatedly called to meet with Australian officials and pressured to take amounts of up to $25,000 to return to their home countries or face deportation. As legal attempts to halt the threat of deportation stall, as many 29 men, all of whom have spent four years in detention, have elected to leave in the last few weeks, sources familiar with the situation told Reuters. A group of nine Nepalese men will depart PNG on Friday, one source said. One source told Reuters approximately 14 detainees have asked the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to facilitate their transfer home. Refugees on Manus Island said a further 15 have not used the IOM to return home. “There is a growing thought that it is better to move on and get on with our lives rather than hang onto some false hope,” an official Australian source told Reuters, who declined to be named. “We haven’t seen as many people leave since the first year of the camp being reopened in late 2012.”

The United States has agreed to resettle up 1,250 men, woman and children on Manus Island and Nauru, though security interviews have stalled, hinting Washington may leaning towards revoking on the deal. It is conducted every six months or 210 days. People who have gamelan, the artists and gamelan art troupes are required to implement this ceremony.

Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiarta, Rector of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, said that providing ritual for gamelan instrument was mentioned in the Prakempa palm-leaf manuscript on Balinese gamelan. It was mentioned there were four good ways to play Balinese gamelan namely the logic or philosophy, ethics, aesthetics and techniques to play gamelan. In the ethics was then mentioned about the otonan for gamelan. To make the gamelan instrument well maintained psychically, it could be done with ritual on Tumpek Krulut. If people would like to learn gamelan, they should perform the ceremony on Tumpek Krulut. “Tradition of holding ritual for gamelan on Tumpek Krulut is indeed a new tradition because we just realized it,” he said. In the manuscript was mentioned that gamelan ritual was dedicated to God in his manifestation as the god of the arts. After the ceremony, it was expected that all gamelan musicians could play together. “It is based on the belief that after saying prayers people play gamelan together. In essence, it is building a sense of togetherness,” he said.

According to Dr. Arya Sugiarta, the tradition of providing ritual for gamelan began around the 1990s when the Dance Academy of Indonesia (former name of the ISI) learned about the Prakempa manuscript well. “Through our faculty and students, we try to disseminate the information, so that it has now become a tradition,” he added. The manuscript also mentioned that people were not allowed to overstep the gamelan as an effort to take care of the gamelan well. In addition to offering some oblations, it should also be followed with good behavior. Essentially, it was the way how to respect to Balinese gamelan accordingly. “If it has been respected and cared for, it will automatically generate the taksu or divine vibration,” he added. Prakempa manuscript, said Dr. Arya Sugiarta, mentioned the ethics in playing the gamelan such as related to people’s posture. Gamelan should not be overstepped because the respected goods might not be overstepped. One, registered on Dec. 28, was described as “Determining a common secret for two blockchain nodes for the secure exchange of information” - apparently a way to use the blockchain to exchange encrypted data. Other applications by Wright and his associates relate to SPORTS BETTINGand a blockchain-based operating system for simple electronic devices. Emails from Wright to Ayre’s associate Matthews, reviewed by Reuters, set out plans to file 150 patents. A person with direct knowledge of Wright’s businesses said he and associates ultimately aim to file closer to 400. None has been approved so far and it’s not clear whether the patents would be enforceable if granted, but Wright’s associates have been quoted as saying the

patents could be sold “for upwards of a billion dollars.” They face stiff competition from other players who are spending significant sums to explore blockchain’s potential. About 70 banks (and Thomson Reuters) have joined a company called R3, which is examining whether blockchain could cut costs in the way financial markets execute transactions. A spokesperson for R3 did not respond to requests for comment. PwC, a consultancy, said more than $1.5 billion was invested in blockchain companies in 2016. Whoever wins this intellectual property race, the rush to patent applications poses a threat to the original conception of bitcoin as a technology available to all. “What was started by Satoshi as an open source project is going to be far from an open project by the time all the commercial projects weigh in,” said Nigel Swycher, CEO of Londonbased Aistemos, an IP analytics company. “People will try to use patents as one of many ways to protect their interests.”(rtr)

A signboard reading ‘Polygamy Area’ is installed to mark this land and indeed made special by residents. Any residents daring to violate the rules set forth in the customary bylaw or awig-awig of Penglipuran, they must consequently be willing to be ostracized and occupy the area with their wife. Not only that, they will also be subject to some other social sanctions. They are not allowed to cross the number of certain roads in the village area. One of them is the main intersection at the village next to the local meeting hall. They are only allowed to exit through the road to the south of the polygamy area. Security experts have said the asylum-seekers could pose a threat if the flow picks up once the weather improves and authorities do not take additional steps. Canadian and U.S. officials speak daily about the border crossers and law enforcement agencies from both nations met in Montreal last month to plot strategies, the source said. The U.S. side asked Canada to provide details of the asylum seekers, in particular, how they had entered the United States and what their status was there. The Montreal summit grouped representatives from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Canada Border Services Agency, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency. RCMP spokeswoman Annie Delisle confirmed the meeting took place, and said the two sides agreed on an “action plan which outlines a collaborative approach to dealing with the influx”. An official in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the crossings were very limited and did not represent a major security concern. “Frankly, it is far more embarrassing to this country than it is threatening,” said the official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The official, and a second person directly involved in border affairs, said U.S. authorities had not mounted a major effort to beef up border security, in part because they lack manpower and equipment. A senior Canadian security source classified the risk as medium- to long-term, since it was likely that those crossing the border really were seeking asylum. Vast stretches of the 5,500-mile (8,900-km) frontier are unguarded and the more images spread of people walking across, the more vulnerable Canada could become, said the source. “If we keep this up for a while, and it becomes known that the border really is porous, then people will use it as an opportunity to put (operatives) in,” said the source. Exact numbers are hard to calculate, since not all authorities release details. In January and February, 143 people walked illegally over the border into Manitoba, local police said. As of Feb. 13, some 3,800 people had made an asylum claim in 2017, up from the same period last year, said Bardsley. BRUSSELS - Brexit’s phoney war is about to become real. It may get bloody. Prime Minister Theresa May says she will file Britain’s divorce papers this month. How the rest of the European Union responds will to some extent determine the future of 65 million Britons and citizens of the other 27 EU states for generations. Before negotiators meet, the EU-27 face politically loaded decisions at a summit expected in April that could set out: what London must settle first - potentially an “exit bill” worth tens of billions of euros; what it must wait for - say talks on a UK-EU free trade deal; and how negotiations will be structured. “These will be big political decisions,” said a senior EU official involved in the preparations. The summit will be a first test of the unity of the 27, which have different priorities in what they want. Siti Aisyah charged with murder

JAKARTA - Siti Aisyah (SA), an Indonesian named as a suspect in the assassination of North Korean Kim Jong Nam in Malaysia, was charged with murder during her first trial in the Sepang District Court, Malaysia, on Wednesday. “During the reading of the indictment, the prosecutor charged SA under the article for conspiracy to commit murder,” Director of Indonesian Citizens Protection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lalu Muhammad Iqbal stated here on Wednesday. The team of lawyers, tasked with providing legal assistance to Aisyah, proposed a gag order to urge the judge to not discuss the case nor reveal the result of the investigation in public. The judge agreed to the appeal for a gag order, Iqbal noted. Since the trial has begun, Aisyah will be moved to a detainment center in Cyberjaya of Kuala Lumpur.

The next trial will be held on Apr 13 in the same district court. “The Government of Indonesia is calling on all parties to uphold the principle of presumption of innocence until proven guilty in the SA case,” Iqbal said. The government will continue to provide legal assistance to Aisyah until the court delivers a verdict in the case. Aisyah was detained by the Royal Malaysian Police on Feb 13. Aisyah, a second woman traveling on a Vietnamese passport, and a boyfriend of one of them have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the death of Jong Nam. BARCELONA - Triple world champion Lewis Hamilton has warned that Formula One’s new cars, while better looking and thrilling to drive, may not do much for the racing when the season starts in Australia on March 26. HONG KONG - Chan Yuen-ting, the first female coach to lead a men’s professional soccer club to a top-flight title, hopes her success with Hong Kong’s Eastern will inspire other women to follow their dreams. The 28year-old turned a childhood crush on former England captain David Beckham into a groundbreaking career that has earned her plaudits from around the world and a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Chan is nicknamed “Beef Ball” in a play on her name and for the similarities of her personality to Chinese perceptions of the characteristics of the cow. Among those characteristics are an appetite for hard work and determination, both of which Chan showed in spades as she shattered the glass ceiling for women coaches in football. Remaining persistent is Chan’s advice to other women looking to break into environments, in sport and elsewhere, where men still dominate. “There might be many women who work in a male-dominated environment and are waiting for opportunities to rise or to break through,” she told Reuters ahead of the club’s Asian Champions League group match against Kawasaki Frontale this week. “They might think, ‘oh there are so few opportunities or it’s super difficult’. But I keep telling them believe in it and it’ll become reality. “Even though you might be ready sometimes the opportunities aren’t there, but at least when the time comes you’ll be ready.” After gaining a masters degree in sports science, Chan got her start in soccer as a data analyst before moving into a coaching role and then joining Eastern, where she assumed the top job after her predecessor left for a club in mainland China.
