SANTA MONICA, Calif. — “12 Years a Slave” rolled at the Spirit Awards, winning five awards including best feature at the annual independent film celebration. On the eve of the Academy Awards, the slavery tale won awards for director Steve McQueen, actress Lupita Nyong’o, screenwriter John Ridley and cinematographer Sean Bobbitt. In a more laid-back, beachside ceremony in Santa Monica, just west of Los Angeles, “12 Years a Slave” was applauded as the clear favorite of the indie circuit. The Spirit Awards could end up being — more than ever before — a dress rehearsal to Sunday’s Academy Awards. “12 Years a Slave” is considered, albeit extremely narrowly, the favorite for best picture over the space spectacle “Gravity” and the 1970s con-artist “American Hustle.” (Neither film was eligible at the Spirits, which honor films made for $20 million or less.) The acting winners, too, may line up. All of the Oscar favorites won Saturday at the Spirits, including best actor for Matthew McConaughey in “Dallas Buyers Club” and Cate Blanchett in “Blue Jasmine.” McConaughey’s co-star, Jared Leto, won best male supporting performance. Leto gave what might be the ac-
ceptance speech to end all acceptance speeches, rattling off an absurd list of thank yous to not just those with “Dallas Buyers Club,” but Hermann Hesse, Wayne Gretzky, home-made burritos, “the seven billion people on the planet” and many more. The actor-rocker added, with emphasis, “all the women I’ve been with and all the women who think they’ve been with me.” For many, the Spirit Awards conclude months of award-season events, and they provide a chance to exhale before the Oscars. McConaughey, Blanchett, Leto and Nyong’o have racked up a slew of awards, often triumphing over the same colleagues. “What am I going to say that I haven’t already said?” Blanchett remarked in her
acceptance speech. On her way into the luncheon, the actress also repeated her view of the renewed scandal surrounding “Blue Jasmine” director Woody Allen and Dylan Farrow’s claims he sexually assaulted her as a child: “It’s a family issue, and I hope they can resolve it as a family.” This award, one of many for Nyong’o, stood out for the now 31-year-old actress: “Not a bad way to celebrate my birthday,” she said.

LOS ANGELES — Will and Jaden Smith have something they can bond over. They were both awarded Razzies for their performances in “After Earth.” Jaden was selected as worst actor for his starring role in the sci-fi flop about a father and son stranded on an untamed earth, while the elder Smith was chosen as worst supporting actor at Saturday’s Golden Raspberry Awards, which lampoons Hollywood’s awards season on the eve of the Oscars. The duo was also selected as the worst screen combo by online Razzies voters. Razzies organizer John Wilson noted the pair was “stranded on Planet Nepotism.” “After Earth,” which was directed by M. Night Shyamalan, tied with “Movie 43” for the most prizes with three awards. The raunchy comedy anthology featuring the likes of Halle Berry, Richard Gere, Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts earned Razzies for worst picture, screenplay and director. Apparently, it took a village to craft something so loathed. The Razzies noted that “Movie 43” is credited with 13 directors and 19 screenwriters. Tyler Perry also didn’t receive any good tidings from the Razzies . Perry — as feisty alter-ego Madea — was picked as worst actress for “A Madea Christmas,” while Kim Kardashian was designated worst supporting actress for her role in the drama “Tyler Perry’s Temptation.” Despite being the year’s biggest box-office bomb, “The Lone Ranger” lassoed just one prize: worst remake, rip-off or sequel. Uncharacteristically, Adam Sandler went home empty handed at this year’s Razzies. Sandler’s “Grown-Ups 2” originally led the hate-fest with eight nominations, including worst picture and actor for Sandler, but the comedy sequel wasn’t awarded a single trophy. Sandler previously made Razzie history in 2011 by winning both the worst actor and actress prizes for his brother-sister cross-dressing comedy “Jack & Jill.”

DENPASAR - In recent years, the environment of Bali gets heavy pressure. Various environmental issues are faced by Bali ranging from the increasingly severe coastal abrasion, critical and diminishing forest land and conversion, maximally untreated waste problem to other problems. Such conditions were also highlighted by the Regional Bylaw Draft Special Committee of the Bali Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMD) for the period of 2013-2018 submitted by Chairman of the Special Committee, Wayan Gunawan, in the Bali House plenary session, Friday (Feb 28). Even, the matter drawing special attention of the Special Committee was the occurrence of land shifting or land conversion having reached 6,120.83 hectares in 2012. Meanwhile, based on the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the total forest in Bali in 2008 reached 130,686 hectares (about 22 percent) whereas the Regulation Bylaw No.16/2009 on the Bali Provincial Spatial Plan (RTRWP) mandates
the forest area should be at least 30 percent of the Bali Island area. However, the recent data indicated that today Bali only had forest area as much as 22 percent, so it still lacked of forest area of more than 8 percent. The Special Committee assessed the attention to the protection of forest areas was still very low. “Related to the issue of environmental conservation, the Special Committee had some notes deserv-
ing to get the attention from Mr. Governor and their staff such as the low protection against forest area. In 2012, approximately 6,120.83 hectares of forest have been converted,” said Gunawan who read the report of the Special Committee. Reduction of forest in Bali was estimated to more widespread without poising with rigorous monitoring and firm law enforcement. The matter of equal access to
clean water and drinking water for the population of Bali was the focus of the Special Committee because not all residents had received the water services. “On average, the population in Bali having the access to drinking water per year reaches about 62 percent. It shows the water service has not met the entire Bali’s population so it is still needed an effort to improve the water services in the future,” said Gunawan. Besides, the coastal abrasion also remained to haunt the beaches in Bali and unfortunately they had not been entirely touched by repairs. Gunawan presented the data that the coastal abrasion occurred in Bali was along 102.470 km (23 percent) of totally 437.70 km of beach on the Island of Bali. Meanwhile, the area having
been handled was along 61.144 km (13 percent). Then, waste problem was still unable to be handled well despite the provincial government had echoed the Bali Clean and Green program. Gunawan said the average percentage of waste handling per year in Bali reached 66 percent of the volume of waste produced by various existing activities. “Approximately 33 percent of the volume of waste has not been handled properly. Thus, the environmental management program with the approach of green Bali should be implemented in the development activities of Balinese community,” said the Functional Group (Golkar) politician from Kintamani, Bangli. SEMARAPURA - Speeding action is increasingly disturbing the public. It is not only committed by general public, but also by junior high school students in Klungkung. The illegal race often taking place on Jalan Bypass Prof. IB Mantra is masterminded by a bookie. Even, unsparingly, the bet value reaches hundreds of millions of rupiahs. He hoped there should be synergy between parents, schools and police. If the school prohibited the student from riding motorcycle,

He was increasingly concerned with the future of children at school, especially if the illegal speeding was still let free. Police also expressed its readiness to sit together with the elements as well as school administration to address the problem. Police would not be able to provide a deterrent effect by playing hide-and-seek with residents, especially the students
who were often involved in the speeding action. Meanwhile, the Regent of Klungkung Nyoman Suwirta responded to this serious issue. He said that he welcomed the suggestion of the county police chief. The suggestion would be discussed with relevant agencies as well as followed by designing a proper mode of transportation. Laundry installation handles 1.5 tons of linen each day
DENPASAR - The need for linen at Sanglah Hospital ranging from bedding to operation clothes is a basic requirement in the operation of the Sanglah Hospital. Ideally, the linen needs namely the bedding to a set of equipment operation was one in five. For instance, Sanglah Hospital has 700 beds. In other words, it needs 3,500 sets of equipment for bed linen. To meet the needs of this linen, the laundry installation of Sanglah Hospital should wash as much as 1-1.5 tons of linen every day. It was presented by the Laundry Installation Head of Sanglah Hospital, I Putu Putra Pasuana. Though only two of four washing machines could operate so far, the linen needs of Sanglah Hospital could still be fulfilled. “Two machines are quite old and have been operated since 1995. So, sometimes the engine broke down and we have to rely on with two machines,” said Pasuana. Aside from broken machine,
the most frequent challenges faced were the incidence where medical waste such as gloves, masks and used hat got washed with the linen. By and large, they were found in the pocket of nurses and doctors of the emergency room. “Before having the JCI accreditation, such an incidence frequently happened. However, with the socialization we can diminish the incidence,” he said. In the future, to further reduce the incidence of medical waste getting washed with the linen, the laundry installation of Sanglah Hospital would negate the pocket on the clothes of doctors and nurses. In the management, all the laundry linens were considered to be infected materials, whether directly and indirectly exposed. “Direct exposure means that it was afflicted by patient’s urine or blood. For this type of linen, we give a special handling,” said Pasuana. The directly infected linen would be placed in a yellow plastic bag in every room. After arriving in the laundry room, the infection exposed linen would be soaked first with chlorine solu-

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BROOKLINE, Massachusetts — The spirited sport known as parkour that treats the world as one big obstacle course is gaining traction outside of the urban enthusiasts whose YouTubeworthy acrobatics spread its popularity. Once the domain of the outdoor anti-athlete, it’s becoming the go-to sport for people who just want a good workout. Jessamyn Hodge, a 32-yearold software and information engineer, recently prepped for her first parkour class at a high school outside of Boston. She was hoping to learn the kind of wallscaling, fence-vaulting, obstacleconquering moves she’d already seen in online videos shared by her rock-climbing friends. “It’s like dancing at high speed,” she said. “It reminds me of being a kid again, like monkeying around on anything and everything, clambering about, generally having fun while getting around.” Parkour, developed in France in the 1980s, borrows elements from martial arts, gymnastics, rock climbing and other athletic fields to enable participants to turn obstacles like park benches, trees, guardrails, and buildings into tools they can use to nimbly propel themselves forward. Parkour’s developers were influ-
enced by military training principles. Since then, some of the sport’s most spectacular moves have been featured in movie sequences, video games and advertisements. One of the most recognizable is a chase scene in the 2006 James Bond movie “Casino Royale.” Beginners who want to hit the ground running — but maybe not by running up a construction crane, James Bond-style — have the option of classes like those offered by London-Based Parkour Generations, a business with affiliates in California, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin, and that offers instruction in several countries including Thailand, Singapore and Brazil. We will boost the fish hatchery unit, not the fish rearing. Thus, the shortage of fingerlings all this time can be covered,” he explained. There were 11 bids Thursday for the 1925 and 1926 editions of the book, both of which were signed by Hitler. Auction manager Laura Yntema at Nate D. Sanders Auctions says the books were purchased by an anonymous U.S. buyer. According to the auction house, Hitler gave the books to Josef Bauer, an early follower who participated in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch in Munich. Volumes of “Mein Kampf” from the 1930s are common, but a copy signed by the author is rare. The volumes feature Hitler’s signature with best wishes to his friend for the Christmas season. The sale price includes a 25 percent commission paid to the auction house.

Meanwhile, his son Debi, 7, was found adrift at Lombok Strait near Nusa Penida by a fisherman from Nusa Penida, Friday morning (Feb 8). Chief of the Air and Marine Police, Karangasem Police, Wayan Wartama, with permission from Chief of Karangasem Police confirmed the case on Saturday. The search for victim Murdrana involved the SAR team as well as the air and marine police by searching in the waters of Seraya to Klungkung. The search on Friday was terminated because it was entering the nightfall and then resumed on Saturday. Meanwhile, the team also made coordination with the fishermen to participate in the search for the victim and was asked to immediately report when it had been found. The victim caught fish with his son Debi. Meanwhile, the elder brother of victim, Nengah Darta, 39, caught fish alone with different boat.

As soon as the family heard the information if the victim’s son was found by fisherman and taken to Nusa Penida, he was immediately picked up. Debi was then brought to his home village. However, he did not want to talk about his father. He said that his father had splashed into the sea when pulling his fishing nets. Allegedly, the net contained a lot of fish and was heavy enough when it was pulled, so his boat wobbled or tilted. Then, Murdrana was hit by waves so he plunged into the sea. GIANYAR - An auto repair building and two rooms belonging to I Wayan Tapa at Tedung hamlet, Abianbase village, Gianyar, was eroded by avalanche occurred after it rained, Wednesday (Feb 26). The rainwater caused the discharge of river water to increase. As a result, the building located on the river bank was eventually eroded due to unstable soil condition. No casualties were reported in the incident. However, it only claimed material loss due to erosion against the auto repair building and residence amounting to IDR 50 million. Condition of the ARM auto repair owned by I Wayan Tapa was very alarming. A half of his business premise avalanched into the river. Other than warehouse of his auto repair, a newly constructed building with two rooms fully equipped with kitchen and bathroom was also eroded
into the river. The avalanche occurred along the 12.5 meter. Meanwhile, the area of avalanche reached 130 square meters of land. After the avalanche eroding the auto repair building and residence, the river water was getting swifter. The euro also advanced to 140.44 yen from 140.05 yen, while the dollar slipped to 101.76 yen from 102.15. Analysts said the eurozone inflation data reduced the possibility that the European Central Bank would further ease monetary policy at its meeting next week, and that spurred buying in the common currency. ECB chief Mario Draghi insisted again Thursday that he saw no danger of deflation as there was no “evidence of consumers postponing expenditure plans.” Even though the inflation rate remained far from the central bank’s target zone of 2.0 percent, he said, “we are clearly not in deflation, which is defined as a self-reinforcing fall in prices that is broad-based across items and across countries.” The dollar continued to show weakness in the wake of Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s slightly more sober tone on the economy Thursday. One of the brothers “kept telling the story of how it happened, over and over again,” Luck said. “It’s so sad.” Luck says no charges are expected against the children and that it’s too early to tell whether charges will be filed against any adults.

Twenty-nine slash victims and four attackers were killed and 143 people wounded. Police fatally shot four of the assailants, captured one and were searching for the others following the attack late Saturday at the Kunming train station in Yunnan province, the official Xinhua News Agency said. State broadcaster CCTV said at least two of the attackers were women — one of the slain and the one who was captured and later brought to a hospital for treatment. Witnesses described assailants dressed in black storming the train station and slashing people indiscriminately with large knives and machetes. Student Qiao Yunao, 16, was waiting to catch a train at the station when people started crying out and running, and then saw a man cut another man’s neck, drawing blood. “I was freaking out, and ran to a fast food store, and many people were

JAKARTA — Japan pledged more than $200 million in aid Saturday to help the Palestinian Authority, as representatives from 22 nations reiterated their support of the Palestinians’ quest for their own state. The pledge was announced by Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida at the second Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development, held in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Kishida said the first disbursement of the aid — about $62 million — was expected later this month. Ministers and high-ranking officials from 22 countries and five international organizations participated in the one-day conference, which was jointly chaired by Indonesia, the Palestinian Authority and Japan.
SINGAPORE - An airline owned by Indonesia’s Lion Group announced Thursday it will launch international services with a flight from Jakarta to Singapore later this year. Batik Air, which is part of the Lion Group that also owns Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air, will start the flights by November or December, said its chief executive Achmad Luthfie. The airline, which operates as a full-service carrier with meals and drinks and offers business and economy class seating, began operations in May last year servicing domestic destinations in Indonesia. “Our first international destination will be Singapore and we aim to have more than a daily service on the route,” Luthfie said in a statement. “We chose Singapore as our first international destination because we can see that demand continues to increase,” he added. Speaking at a news conference in Singapore, Luthfie said Batik Air plans to fly next from the Indonesian capital to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Luthfie said that eventually it is looking to fly to Southern China and Western Australia. On the domestic front, the airline plans to more than double its network to 22 destinations including Palembang, Solo and Batam. Luthfie said the carrier is currently filling 90 percent of seats. Batik Air operates six Boeing 737-900ER aircrafts and is based in Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport. Six Airbus A320 aircraft and four Boeing 737-800 planes will be delivered by the end of this year, the airline said. Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of over 17,000 islands cutting across three time zones, relies heavily on air transport and is experiencing a sharp growth in its aviation sector, thanks to a rapidly rising middle class.
The conference agreed to expand the number of participants and encourage greater engagement of civil societies in East Asia to assist the Palestinians. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed hope that “universal recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state and as a full member state of the United Nations” would eventually be achieved. “We can make this happen if we redouble our effort to support them in nation and state building,” Yudhoyono said. A joint statement issued at the
conclusion the conference said the participants agreed to encourage greater engagement of civil society and nongovernment organizations in East Asian countries. The statement also said participant countries and international organizations had pledged $210 million to the Palestinians since last year’s conference, held in Tokyo. ROME — With nearly half the stadium closed to fans as punishment for territorial chants, not much was missed in a 0-0 draw between second-place Roma and fifth-place Inter Milan in Serie A on Saturday. Cincinnati Police Lt. Don Luck tells the Cincinnati Enquirer that the three boys were visiting an uncle when one pulled the trigger of a handgun and hit Sammy Lorenzo in the chest Saturday. The boy was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and rushed into surgery, but later died. One of the brothers “kept telling the story of how it happened, over and over again,” Luck said. “It’s so sad.” Luck says no charges are expected against the children and that it’s too early to tell whether charges will be filed against any adults.

KUNMING, China — More than 10 assailants slashed scores of people with knives at a train station in southern China in what officials said Sunday was a terrorist assault by ethnic separatists from the far west. Twenty-nine slash victims and four attackers were killed and 143 people wounded. Police fatally shot four of the assailants, captured one and were searching for the others following the attack late Saturday at the Kunming train station in Yunnan province, the official Xinhua News Agency said. State broadcaster CCTV said at least two of the attackers were women — one of the slain and the one who was captured and later brought to a hospital for treatment. Witnesses described assailants dressed in black storming the train station and slashing people indiscriminately with large knives and machetes. Student Qiao Yunao, 16, was waiting to catch a train at the station when people started crying out and running, and then saw a man cut another man’s neck, drawing blood. “I was freaking out, and ran to a fast food store, and many people were
running in there to take refuge,” she told The Associated Press via Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblog. “I saw two attackers, both men, one with a watermelon knife and the other with a fruit knife. They were running and chopping whoever they could.” The attackers’ identities have not been confirmed, but evidence at the scene showed that it was “a terrorist attack carried out by Xinjiang separatist forces,” Xinhua quoted the municipal government as saying. KATMANDU, Nepal — An overloaded boat capsized in a river in western Nepal, killing at least four people and leaving seven missing, police said Sunday. The boat was carrying goods and about 25 people from jobs near the Indian border village of Belraya when it capsized, police officer Mohan Joshi said. He said the boat was overloaded, but did not say what its capacity was. About a dozen people survived the accident Saturday night by swimming to the banks of the Mohana River in Nepal’s Kailali District, about 650 kilometers (400 miles) west of the capital, Katmandu. Kishida said the first disbursement of the aid — about $62 million — was expected later this month. Ministers and high-ranking officials from 22 countries and five international organizations participated in the one-day conference, which was jointly chaired by Indonesia, the Palestinian Authority and Japan.
SINGAPORE - An airline owned by Indonesia’s Lion Group announced Thursday it will launch international services with a flight from Jakarta to Singapore later this year. Batik Air, which is part of the Lion Group that also owns Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air, will start the flights by November or December, said its chief executive Achmad Luthfie. The airline, which operates as a full-service carrier with meals and drinks and offers business and economy class seating, began operations in May last year servicing domestic destinations in Indonesia. “Our first international destination will be Singapore and we aim to have more than a daily service on the route,” Luthfie said in a statement. “We chose Singapore as our first international destination because we can see that demand continues to increase,” he added. Speaking at a news conference in Singapore, Luthfie said Batik Air plans to fly next from the Indonesian capital to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Luthfie said that eventually it is looking to fly to Southern China and Western Australia. On the domestic front, the airline plans to more than double its network to 22 destinations including Palembang, Solo and Batam. Luthfie said the carrier is currently filling 90 percent of seats. Batik Air operates six Boeing 737-900ER aircrafts and is based in Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport. Six Airbus A320 aircraft and four Boeing 737-800 planes will be delivered by the end of this year, the airline said. Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of over 17,000 islands cutting across three time zones, relies heavily on air transport and is experiencing a sharp growth in its aviation sector, thanks to a rapidly rising middle class.
The conference agreed to expand the number of participants and encourage greater engagement of civil societies in East Asia to assist the Palestinians. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed hope that “universal recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state and as a full member state of the United Nations” would eventually be achieved. “We can make this happen if we redouble our effort to support them in nation and state building,” Yudhoyono said. Prices in the euro region rose at an 0.8 percent rate in February, unchanged from the month before, amid worries that the 18-nation economy could stall into a deflationary spiral. At 2200 GMT the euro stood at $1.3800, compared with $1.3710 late Thursday. In trade during the day it reached $1.3825, its highest level since late October. The euro also advanced to 140.44 yen from 140.05 yen, while the dollar slipped to 101.76 yen from 102.15. Analysts said the eurozone inflation data reduced the possibility that the European Central Bank would further ease monetary policy at its meeting next week, and that spurred buying in the common currency. ECB chief Mario Draghi insisted again Thursday that he saw no danger of deflation as there was no “evidence of consumers postponing expenditure plans.” Even though the inflation rate remained far from the central bank’s target zone of 2.0 percent, he said, “we are clearly not in deflation, which is defined as a self-reinforcing fall in prices that is broad-based across items and across countries.” The dollar continued to show weakness in the wake of Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s slightly more sober tone on the economy Thursday. She said in Senate testimony that the Fed’s plan to taper its stimulus remained in place but added that the Fed was closely eying economic data to see if there was more behind recent weak indicators than just severe winter weather. The purchasing managers’ index (PMI) tumbled to 50.2, the National Bureau of Statistics reported on its website, in the third straight drop from 50.5 in January, 51.0 in December and 51.4 in November. A figure over 50 indicates expansion while one below shows contraction. This marked China’s 17th consecutive month of manufacturing growth but at a slowing rate -- the lowest since a June reading of 50.1. China’s economic growth has weakened in recent years, hitting 7.7 percent in 2013, the lowest level since 1999. Analysts expect a further drop to 7.5 percent this year.
The lowered forecast comes as Beijing has pledged to reform the country’s growth model so that consumers and other private actors play a more significant role, rather than massive and often wasteful state investment. Whereas in the past authorities have reacted quickly to inject cash to stimulate a slowing economy, recently they have remained tightfisted instead. Two liquidity crunches occurred last year in part because officials sought to impose stricter discipline over banks amid burgeoning debt levels. But the recent Lunar New Year, China’s

Fisherman goes missing; his son found adrift at sea

AMLAPURA - A fisherman from Kusambi hamlet, Bunutan, Karangasem, Wayan Murdrana, 28, was reported to disappear while fishing in Lombok Strait, Thursday afternoon (Feb 27). Meanwhile, his son Debi, 7, was found adrift at Lombok Strait near Nusa Penida by a fisherman from Nusa Penida, Friday morning (Feb 8). Chief of the Air and Marine Police, Karangasem Police, Wayan Wartama, with permission from Chief of Karangasem Police confirmed the case on Saturday. The search for victim Murdrana involved the SAR team as well as the air and marine police by searching in the waters of Seraya to Klungkung. The search on Friday was terminated because it was entering the nightfall and then resumed on Saturday. Meanwhile, the team also made coordination with the fishermen to participate in the search for the victim and was asked to immediately report when it had been found. The victim caught fish with his son Debi. Meanwhile, the elder brother of victim, Nengah Darta, 39, caught fish alone with different boat.

Responding to such incident, the victim Murdrana was then reported to Abang Police. When found, the son of victim Debi was taken to Nusa Penida. He was found on the boat of his father and was in shocked condition. Afterward, he was taken to the public health center in Nusa Penida. As soon as the family heard the information if the victim’s son was found by fisherman and taken to Nusa Penida, he was immediately picked up. Debi was then brought to his home village. However, he did not want to talk about his father. He said that his father had splashed into the sea when pulling his fishing nets. Allegedly, the net contained a lot of fish and was heavy enough when it was pulled, so his boat wobbled or tilted. Then, Murdrana was hit by waves so he plunged into the sea. GIANYAR - An auto repair building and two rooms belonging to I Wayan Tapa at Tedung hamlet, Abianbase village, Gianyar, was eroded by avalanche occurred after it rained, Wednesday (Feb 26). The rainwater caused the discharge of river water to increase. As a result, the building located on the river bank was eventually eroded due to unstable soil condition. No casualties were reported in the incident. However, it only claimed material loss due to erosion against the auto repair building and residence amounting to IDR 50 million. Condition of the ARM auto repair owned by I Wayan Tapa was very alarming. A half of his business premise avalanched into the river. Other than warehouse of his auto repair, a newly constructed building with two rooms fully equipped with kitchen and bathroom was also eroded
into the river. The avalanche occurred along the 12.5 meter. Meanwhile, the area of avalanche reached 130 square meters of land. After the avalanche eroding the auto repair building and residence, the river water was getting swifter. A number of workers were hired to prevent the water, while some others immediately saved a number of building materials that could be used again. “Incidentally, there are some workers employed in the neighboring project. I asked them to evacuate a number of materials that can be used again,” he said. Tapa said the avalanche was known shortly after the rain. Suddenly it was heard a thundering sound in the back of the auto repair and the warehouse building was then eroded into the river. At the time of incident, the auto repair was in quiet condition. His rowboat was destroyed as collided by fishing boat with helmsman Mursalim, 28, from Pengambengan. At that time, the victim was accompanied by his son, Hari Sampurno. As usual, these fishermen caught fish in the waters around Yeh Kuning, Jembrana, not far from their home village. Location of the fishing spot was about 1.5 miles from the beach. However, the fate of the boy’s father was unlucky. When they were absorbed in fishing, the Bintang fishing boat suddenly appeared in front of them and crashed the victim’s rowboat to damage. The victim was thrown and plunged into the sea. After doing a search, the victim was found to have died. Meanwhile, Hari Sampurno survived. Spokesperson of Jembrana Police, Wayan Setiajaya, with permission from Chief of Jembrana Police Harry Hariyadi confirmed the incident. The case of the accident at sea was currently handled by marine police unit of Jembrana Police. The fishing boat worth hundreds of millions of rupiahs was temporarily not allowed to sail. BROOKLINE, Massachusetts — The spirited sport known as parkour that treats the world as one big obstacle course is gaining traction outside of the urban enthusiasts whose YouTubeworthy acrobatics spread its popularity. Once the domain of the outdoor anti-athlete, it’s becoming the go-to sport for people who just want a good workout. Jessamyn Hodge, a 32-yearold software and information engineer, recently prepped for her first parkour class at a high school outside of Boston. She was hoping to learn the kind of wallscaling, fence-vaulting, obstacleconquering moves she’d already seen in online videos shared by her rock-climbing friends. “It’s like dancing at high speed,” she said. “It reminds me of being a kid again, like monkeying around on anything and everything, clambering about, generally having fun while getting around.” Parkour, developed in France in the 1980s, borrows elements from martial arts, gymnastics, rock climbing and other athletic fields to enable participants to turn obstacles like park benches, trees, guardrails, and buildings into tools they can use to nimbly propel themselves forward. Parkour’s developers were influ-
enced by military training principles. Since then, some of the sport’s most spectacular moves have been featured in movie sequences, video games and advertisements. We will boost the fish hatchery unit, not the fish rearing. Thus, the shortage of fingerlings all this time can be covered,” he explained. Aside from facing obstacle related to fingerlings, all this time his party also lacked of fishery extension officers. Ideally, each village was handled by one extension officer. But in reality, Bangli had only six officers. LOS ANGELES — Two rare, early editions of Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” have sold for $64,850 at a Los Angeles auction. There were 11 bids Thursday for the 1925 and 1926 editions of the book, both of which were signed by Hitler. Auction manager Laura Yntema at Nate D. Sanders Auctions says the books were purchased by an anonymous U.S. buyer. According to the auction house, Hitler gave the books to Josef Bauer, an early follower who participated in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch in Munich. Volumes of “Mein Kampf” from the 1930s are common, but a copy signed by the author is rare. The volumes feature Hitler’s signature with best wishes to his friend for the Christmas season. The sale price includes a 25 percent commission paid to the auction house.

According to Ketut Seten, the treatment of dragon fruit was not difficult, but it was only enough to use small and dry enough land to facilitate the process of growing dragon fruit trees. DENPASAR - The need for linen at Sanglah Hospital ranging from bedding to operation clothes is a basic requirement in the operation of the Sanglah Hospital. Ideally, the linen needs namely the bedding to a set of equipment operation was one in five. For instance, Sanglah Hospital has 700 beds. By and large, they were found in the pocket of nurses and doctors of the emergency room. “Before having the JCI accreditation, such an incidence frequently happened. However, with the socialization we can diminish the incidence,” he said. In the future, to further reduce the incidence of medical waste getting washed with the linen, the laundry installation of Sanglah Hospital would negate the pocket on the clothes of doctors and nurses. In the management, all the laundry linens were considered to be infected materials, whether directly and indirectly exposed. “Direct exposure means that it was afflicted by patient’s urine or blood. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — “12 Years a Slave” rolled at the Spirit Awards, winning five awards including best feature at the annual independent film celebration. On the eve of the Academy Awards, the slavery tale won awards for director Steve McQueen, actress Lupita Nyong’o, screenwriter John Ridley and cinematographer Sean Bobbitt. In a more laid-back, beachside ceremony in Santa Monica, just west of Los Angeles, “12 Years a Slave” was applauded as the clear favorite of the indie circuit. The Spirit Awards could end up being — more than ever before — a dress rehearsal to Sunday’s Academy Awards. “12 Years a Slave” is considered, albeit extremely narrowly, the favorite for best picture over the space spectacle “Gravity” and the 1970s con-artist “American Hustle.” (Neither film was eligible at the Spirits, which honor films made for $20 million or less.) The acting winners, too, may line up. All of the Oscar favorites won Saturday at the Spirits, including best actor for Matthew McConaughey in “Dallas Buyers Club” and Cate Blanchett in “Blue Jasmine.” McConaughey’s co-star, Jared Leto, won best male supporting performance. Leto gave what might be the ac-
ceptance speech to end all acceptance speeches, rattling off an absurd list of thank yous to not just those with “Dallas Buyers Club,” but Hermann Hesse, Wayne Gretzky, home-made burritos, “the seven billion people on the planet” and many more. The actor-rocker added, with emphasis, “all the women I’ve been with and all the women who think they’ve been with me.” For many, the Spirit Awards conclude months of award-season events, and they provide a chance to exhale before the Oscars. McConaughey, Blanchett, Leto and Nyong’o have racked up a slew of awards, often triumphing over the same colleagues. “What am I going to say that I haven’t already said?” Blanchett remarked in her
acceptance speech. On her way into the luncheon, the actress also repeated her view of the renewed scandal surrounding “Blue Jasmine” director Woody Allen and Dylan Farrow’s claims he sexually assaulted her as a child: “It’s a family issue, and I hope they can resolve it as a family.” This award, one of many for Nyong’o, stood out for the now 31-year-old actress: “Not a bad way to celebrate my birthday,” she said.

LOS ANGELES — Will and Jaden Smith have something they can bond over. They were both awarded Razzies for their performances in “After Earth.” Jaden was selected as worst actor for his starring role in the sci-fi flop about a father and son stranded on an untamed earth, while the elder Smith was chosen as worst supporting actor at Saturday’s Golden Raspberry Awards, which lampoons Hollywood’s awards season on the eve of the Oscars. The duo was also selected as the worst screen combo by online Razzies voters. Razzies organizer John Wilson noted the pair was “stranded on Planet Nepotism.” “After Earth,” which was directed by M. Night Shyamalan, tied with “Movie 43” for the most prizes with three awards. The raunchy comedy anthology featuring the likes of Halle Berry, Richard Gere, Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts earned Razzies for worst picture, screenplay and director. Apparently, it took a village to craft something so loathed. The Razzies noted that “Movie 43” is credited with 13 directors and 19 screenwriters. Tyler Perry also didn’t receive any good tidings from the Razzies . Perry — as feisty alter-ego Madea — was picked as worst actress for “A Madea Christmas,” while Kim Kardashian was designated worst supporting actress for her role in the drama “Tyler Perry’s Temptation.” Despite being the year’s biggest box-office bomb, “The Lone Ranger” lassoed just one prize: worst remake, rip-off or sequel. Uncharacteristically, Adam Sandler went home empty handed at this year’s Razzies. Sandler’s “Grown-Ups 2” originally led the hate-fest with eight nominations, including worst picture and actor for Sandler, but the comedy sequel wasn’t awarded a single trophy. Sandler previously made Razzie history in 2011 by winning both the worst actor and actress prizes for his brother-sister cross-dressing comedy “Jack & Jill.”

DENPASAR - In recent years, the environment of Bali gets heavy pressure. Various environmental issues are faced by Bali ranging from the increasingly severe coastal abrasion, critical and diminishing forest land and conversion, maximally untreated waste problem to other problems. Such conditions were also highlighted by the Regional Bylaw Draft Special Committee of the Bali Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMD) for the period of 2013-2018 submitted by Chairman of the Special Committee, Wayan Gunawan, in the Bali House plenary session, Friday (Feb 28). Even, the matter drawing special attention of the Special Committee was the occurrence of land shifting or land conversion having reached 6,120.83 hectares in 2012. Meanwhile, based on the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the total forest in Bali in 2008 reached 130,686 hectares (about 22 percent) whereas the Regulation Bylaw No.16/2009 on the Bali Provincial Spatial Plan (RTRWP) mandates
the forest area should be at least 30 percent of the Bali Island area. However, the recent data indicated that today Bali only had forest area as much as 22 percent, so it still lacked of forest area of more than 8 percent. The Special Committee assessed the attention to the protection of forest areas was still very low. “Related to the issue of environmental conservation, the Special Committee had some notes deserv-
ing to get the attention from Mr. Governor and their staff such as the low protection against forest area. In 2012, approximately 6,120.83 hectares of forest have been converted,” said Gunawan who read the report of the Special Committee. Reduction of forest in Bali was estimated to more widespread without poising with rigorous monitoring and firm law enforcement. The matter of equal access to
clean water and drinking water for the population of Bali was the focus of the Special Committee because not all residents had received the water services. “On average, the population in Bali having the access to drinking water per year reaches about 62 percent. It shows the water service has not met the entire Bali’s population so it is still needed an effort to improve the water services in the future,” said Gunawan. Besides, the coastal abrasion also remained to haunt the beaches in Bali and unfortunately they had not been entirely touched by repairs. Gunawan presented the data that the coastal abrasion occurred in Bali was along 102.470 km (23 percent) of totally 437.70 km of beach on the Island of Bali. Meanwhile, the area having
been handled was along 61.144 km (13 percent). Then, waste problem was still unable to be handled well despite the provincial government had echoed the Bali Clean and Green program. Gunawan said the average percentage of waste handling per year in Bali reached 66 percent of the volume of waste produced by various existing activities. “Approximately 33 percent of the volume of waste has not been handled properly. Thus, the environmental management program with the approach of green Bali should be implemented in the development activities of Balinese community,” said the Functional Group (Golkar) politician from Kintamani, Bangli.
