CAIRO — At least 74 people have been killed and hundreds injured after soccer fans rushed the ďŹ eld in the seaside city of Port Said following an upset victory by the home team over Egypt’s top club, setting off clashes and a stampede as riot police largely failed to intervene. Wednesday’s tragedy was a bloody reminder of the deteriorating security in the Arab world’s most populous country as instability continues nearly a year after former President Hosni Mubarak was swept out of power in a popular uprising. The melee — which followed an Egyptian league match between Al-Masry, the home team in the Mediterranean city, and Al-Ahly, based in Cairo and one of Egypt’s most popular teams — was the worst case of soccer violence in Egypt and the
deadliest worldwide since 1996. One player said it was “like a war.â€? In Cairo, fans angered that another match between Al-Ismaili and Zamalek was halted because of the Port Said violence set ďŹ re to the bleachers at the main stadium in the Egyptian capital, authorities said. No injuries were reported, and employees said firefighters extinguished the blaze before it caused much damage. The clashes and ensuing stampede did not appear to be directly linked to the political turmoil in Egypt, but the violence raised
fresh concerns about the ability of the state police to manage crowds. Most of the hundreds of blackuniformed police with helmets and shields stood in lines and did nothing as soccer fans chased each other, some wielding sharp objects and others hurling sticks and rocks. Security officials said the ministry has issued directives for its personnel not to “engage� with civilians after recent clashes between police and protesters in November left more than 40 people dead. The violence also underscored the role of soc-
cer fans in Egypt’s recent protest movement. Organized fans, in groups known as ultras, have played an important role in the revolution and rallies against military rule. Their anti-police songs, peppered with curses, have quickly become viral and an expression of the hatred many Egyptians feel toward security forces that were accused of much of the abuse that was widespread under Mubarak’s regime. There have been other recent violent incidents at soccer games. Warning signs frequently disregarded Mangupura (Bali Post)—
The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Badung Regency noted there are at least 30 vulnerable points to disaster in Badung. In order to avoid casualties, special signs have been installed at those disaster-prone points. Division Head of Emergency and Logistics of BPBD Badung, I Putu Thomas Yuniarta, said on Monday (Jan 30) that procurement of the disaster signs had been allocated in the
2011 Budget Amendment. In details, seven signs would be installed in the potential areas to flooding, six at landslides area, and the remaining signs around the coast of Badung Regency as an early warning of tsunami. Although those signs had been installed, many people seemed to disregard them. On that account, he hoped the community including tourists to comply with the guidelines so that unwanted things could be
avoided as early as possible. 2012, a number of school buildings in Denpasar renovated Denpasar (Bali Post)—
In 2012, the number of buildings of elementary school and junior high school in Denpasar are scheduled for renovation or added with new classrooms. Division Head of Basic Education, Denpasar Education Agency, Made Raka, said on Monday (Jan 30) that Denpasar Municipality through the Education Agency would rehabilitate a number of school buildings. Total budget allocated for the rehabilitation would be around IDR 15.6 billion. “Due to restrictedness of budget, only a few of the proposed buildings can be renovated in 2012. Priority for the rehabilitation in 2012 will be given to the building whose condition needs immediate handling,� he said. Raka said, it was now in the planning preparation. If everything had been accomplished, it would be followed by the tender process. Expectedly, a number of schools scheduled for the renovation could be realized this year.
He said the Denpasar Municipality through the Education Agency was scheduled the building rehabilitation in 2012 including the building of SDN 17 Dangin Puri primary school. A Taiwanese official predicted Wednesday that China would maintain a conciliatory stance with Taipei, saying that likely next leader Xi Jinping has experience dealing with the self-ruling island. John Chiang, the vice chairman of Taiwan President Ma Yingjeou’s Kuomintang party, said that Chinese President Hu Jintao has been the chief force behind a policy of “emphasizing carrots over sticks” with the self-ruling island. “I think these kinds of policies will continue to be there for wooing the support of the Taiwanese public,” Chiang said. “And they will say it’s best to have the coming several years spent entrenching the economic accomplishments across the strait,” Chiang said at the Heritage Foundation think tank on a visit to Washington. Taiwanese voters last month re-elected Ma, who sealed a landmark free trade agreement with mainland China as part of his efforts to ease tension with Beijing, which considers the island a territory awaiting reunification. Chiang, a former foreign minister, reiterated that Ma’s administration was not seeking to enter talks on sensitive topics such as a peace treaty, saying there is “no hurry to move towards the political area.” Chiang said that Vice President Xi Jinping, who is widely expected to take over next year at China’s helm, had plenty of experience dealing with Taiwanese when he served as a leader in investor-friendly coastal Fujian province. “Given his bunch of experiences in dealing with Taiwanese investors, businessmen and also on cross-strait relations, I see no reason he will have a different policy toward Taiwan,” Chiang said. His remarks echo those of Ma, who said ahead of the election that he did not see “any significant difference” on Taiwan between Xi and Hu. Domestic critics of Ma charge that growing Chinese investment threatens to chip away at democratic Taiwan’s de facto independence.
Yet now, surprisingly rapid reforms and cease-fires under way in Myanmar are opening the prospects for the return of one of the world’s largest refugee populations — some 1 million Burmese huddled in frontier camps and hideouts across five countries. “There’s a time for war, and a time for peace. Sixty-three years is long enough for killing,” Pastor Simon Htoo told more than 300 young Burmese refugees gathered for morning prayers in a weathered, jungle church in Mae La, a camp near the Myanmar-Thai border. “Hope to see you all soon in our beautiful land.” The looming task for the international community will be massive. One of the least known diaspora of recent times includes an array of ethnic groups and religions — Buddhist, Christian and Muslim — driven from their homeland by oppression of political dissidents and brutal military campaigns against Myanmar’s minorities. The fighting and human rights
abuses still persist in some areas, and even if stopped, many refugees say the hatreds, suspicions and double-crosses of past decades must be overcome before they feel safe enough to return. One of the ethnic groups, the Karen, has been waging a guerrilla war for greater autonomy for 63 years from iron-fisted military regimes. The Kachin took up arms again last year. “Signing a cease-fire is very easy — you can do it in a few minutes — but implementation is a different matter. That depends not on the smiles on their faces, but their sincerity, what is really in their hearts. Maybe it’s another trick,” Htoo, a Karen Baptist pastor, said after his sermon in this camp sheltering more than 50,000 refugees. When they do return, the refugees will emerge from Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Malaysia and China, a refugee mass that with the Iraqis and Afghans ranks among the largest in the world. Their living conditions vary vastly. In the fetid settlements of
Bangladesh, as many as 400,000 illegal Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority, hover on the edge of existence. Others live in a well-established string of U.N.recognized camps along the Thai border, home to three generations who have spent their entire lives there. Most would be returning to border regions of razed villages, minefields, traumatized people and almost nonexistent support systems in a country that is already among the world’s poorest. Many fear that with the world quick to applaud Myanmar’s reforms, pressure will mount to force them back before conditions are right. “People in the refugee camps must be given a choice: to go home, stay in Thailand or be resettled abroad. We don’t trust Burmese politics because things are still very unclear,” says Dr. Cynthia Maung, a refugee doctor they call “Mother Teresa of Burma” whose Thai border clinic has treated thousands. “Nobody is going back now.”

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

10 Islamic militants sent to prison in Indonesia Associated Press TANGERANG — A court sentenced 10 Islamic militants Wednesday to up to eight years in prison for acquiring materials to be used in terrorist activities in Indonesia. The defendants were arrested after a suicide bombing last April in a mosque within a police headquarters in the West Java town of Cirebon, which wounded 28 people, mostly policemen. The judges ruled that the 10 defendants — two arrested in Cirebon and eight captured in Central and West Java — violated Indonesia’s anti-terror law by either possessing or acquiring illegal arms and
explosives material. Dzulkifli Lubis and Musolah Saifullah were sentenced to eightyear terms, and the other defendants received between five and seven and half years at the trial held in Tangerang city, just west Jakarta. Saifullah and Andri Siswanto of Cirebon were accused of helping the suicide bomber Muhammad Syarif by saving, hiding or possess-
ing the rest of his explosive materials, including seven homemade bombs Syarif assembled. Saifullah and the others were accused of supplying arms, ammunition and grenades for the Cirebon group. SPICE PASTE: 5 red chilies, seeded and chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 7 shallots, peeled and chopped 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 5 cm ginger, peeled and chopped 4 candlenuts 1 ½ tsp coriander ½ tsp dried shrimp paste toasted 1 sml tomato, peeled and seeded 2 tbsp oil 1 ½ tbsp tamarind pulp 1 salam leaf 1 lemon grass, bruised PREPARATION: Prepare spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil, tamarind, salam leaf and lemongrass. Heat oil, add spice paste and all other ingredients. Cook over moderate heat for about 5 minutes, then cool. Wash lobsters and leave whole. Bring water to the boil, add lobsters and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove lobsters, plunge in iced water for 1 minutes, then drain and remove meat. Return shells to the pot of water, keeping lobster meat aside. Add spice paste, lemongrass, lime leaves and vinegar to the water with the shells and simmer until 4 cups of stock remain. Add coconut milk and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain stock and return to pan. Add lobster and simmer for 1 minute. Serve garnished with fried shallots and accompanied by white rice. Helpful hints: if using prawns instead of lobster, peel the raw prawns and put prawns shells 4 cups of water. Simmer for 5 minutes, then combine this stock with coconut milk, prawns and all other ingredients, simmering until cooked.

The daughter of Elvis Presley said she has been in talks about a movie, though she didn’t offer a timetable. “There’s not been anything done properly with him yet, you know, that has satisfied me in terms of capturing everything,” she told The Associated Press. “It will happen, though.” Presley, who rarely gives interviews, was at Graceland this week to attend the opening of a new exhibit. “Elvis Through His Daughter’s Eyes” is a personal look at Lisa Marie and includes her baby shoes, her first record player and a small white fur coat — touchstones from her days living at Graceland, her father’s longtime Memphis home until his death Aug. 16, 1977. This year marks the 35th an-
niversary of Elvis’ death, which is observed each August with a weeklong gathering of fans in Memphis. Officials anticipate as many as 75,000 people, the number that showed up in 2007 for the 30th anniversary. Presley lived at Graceland until she was 5, which is when her mother Priscilla divorced Elvis and moved with Lisa Marie to California. Sandia Labs engineers create ‘self-guided’ bullet Associated Press Writer
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Figuring out how to pack a processor and other sophisticated equipment into a machine gun bullet has been a challenge, but engineers at Sandia National Laboratories say the miniature guidance system they’ve developed is a breakthrough. A bullet that directs itself like a tiny guided missile and can hit a target more than a mile away has the potential to change the battlefield for soldiers without costing too much, engineers said Wednesday. Sandia technical staff member Red Jones said the .50-caliber bullets are being designed to work with military machine guns, so soldiers could hit their mark faster and with precision. “Everybody thought it was too difficult to make things small enough. We knew we could deal with that. The other thing was it was going to be too complicated and expensive,” he said. “We came up with an innovative way around that to make it stupid and cheap and still pretty good.” Developing more precise weaponry has been a mission for government and industry scientists for decades. Most recently, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded tens of millions of dollars in contracts to companies to develop guided ammunition for snipers and special scopes that account for crosswinds and other environmental variables. The idea behind Sandia Labs’ bullet is rooted more in the M2, a belt-fed machine gun that became standard issue in the U.S. Army nearly 80 years ago. Pairing the M2 with the guided bullet would allow soldiers to hit their mark faster and with precision. At 4 inches long and a half-inch in diameter, the bullet is designed to twist and turn, making up to 30 corrections per second. Jones and his fellow researchers had initial success testing the design in computer simulations and in field tests of prototypes, built from commercially available parts. With most of the hard science done, Jones said the next step is for Sandia to partner with a private company to complete testing of the prototype and bring a guided bullet to the marketplace. More than $1 million in research and development grants have taken the project this far.

DENVER — The nation’s leanest state is taking aim at junk food in school cafeterias as it considers the nation’s toughest school trans-fat ban. A Colorado House committee was scheduled to hear a bill Thursday to forbid any trans-fat in school food — not just the food served through regular cafeteria lunches. That would mean vending machines, after-school bake sales and popular “a la carte” items on lunch lines such as ice creams or pizza would have to be produced without artery-clogging trans fats. Several states already limit trans-fat in school cafeterias, but none has a trans-fat ban that extends before and after school. Delaware and California, for example, both ban school food with trans-fat, but not at all after-school activities. Colorado has the nation’s lowest obesity rate, but young people are becoming fatter along with their counterparts in other states. In 2007, Colorado’s childhood obesity rate was the nation’s third-best. By 2010 it ranked 23rd according to the Colorado Health Foundation, a change researchers attribute to sedentary behavior and a growing childhood poverty rate. Lawmakers who sponsored the trans-fat ban — a Republican and a Democrat — said Colorado needs to step up healthy eating among children to hang onto its prized leanest-state title. “Colorado is one of the healthiest states but has the one of the highest rates of childhood obesity. So if we’re going to do something about that, this is a step in the right direction,” said one of the bill’s sponsors, House Education Chairman Tom Massey, R-Poncha Springs. The American Heart Association is working to assure skeptical Colorado lawmakers that the trans-fat ban wouldn’t forbid childhood faves such as pizza and French fries. The bill also wouldn’t affect naturally occurring trans-fat, such as that in beef and dairy. “You can still have the exact same food. You’d have to find different ways of preparing them,” association lobbyist Susanna Morris said.

LONDON - Britain will have to do without their one world class player in their Davis Cup tie against Slovakia later this month after Andy Murray’s decision to skip the clash in Glasgow. Stoner to top second day of MotoGP testing at Sepang Casey Stoner shrugged off his Tuesday back problem to set the fastest time of the second day of MotoGP winter testing at Sepang. The reigning world champion had been forced to skip day one when he hurt his back while warming up before going out for the first time. Although with a total mileage of 29 laps, he completed rather less running than his rivals today, Stoner still showed his and Honda’s pace with a 2m00.895s lap. That deposed morning pacesetter Ben Spies (Yamaha) by 0.157 seconds - although the American was briefly credited with a time 2.7s faster than
anyone else due to a glitch near the end of the day. Tuesday’s fastest rider Jorge Lorenzo completed the top three on the second works Yamaha today, ahead of Stoner’s Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa and Cal Crutchlow - who again showed very strong pace on the Tech 3 Yamaha. Quickest Ducati was the Pramac example of Hector Barbera in sixth, with works rider Valentino Rossi slightly off his Tuesday pace in seventh position, 0.9s down on

D ¶FRPSOHWH rework’ McLaren says its new MP4-27 is a ‘complete rework’ of last year’s car - despite its outward appearance pointing to it being an evolution of its 2011 contender. After the covers came off the new car at McLaren’s Woking factory on Wednesday, the main focus points of the MP4-27 were a nose step that was less extreme than some had expected, and the positioning of the exhausts. Tim Goss, McLaren’s director of engineering, said that although outwardly the car was an evolution of the MP4-26, it was in fact totally different under the skin.“We have set ourselves tough and ambitious targets, and we aim to deliver those by the first race and have a championshipwinning car,” explained Goss. “This car is a complete rework from nose to tail, and there is very little that is carried over. A bit of the fuel system is the same, but almost everything else on the car has changed.
