‘Saturday Night Live’ comes to China’s Internet Associated Press Writer
BEIJING — A popular online video site is bringing the irreverent, topical humor of “Saturday Night Live” to China. The late-night U.S. comedy sketch show that regularly mocks politicians, popular culture and celebrities is being shown exclusively on the website of Sohu Video, a unit of Chinese online media group and Nasdaq-listed Sohu.com Inc. Ten episodes from the current 39th season of “SNL” are available now. Future episodes will be available online without subtitles the Monday after airing in the United States, and a version with Chinese subtitles and explanations of cultural references will be available at 10 p.m. the following Saturday, Sohu said in its announcement Thursday. The NBC network show has been a comedy proving ground since its inception with Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon and Will Ferrell among its cast over the years. Many of its original sketches and musical performances have been made into movies — including the 1992 hit “Wayne’s World” — or gone viral online. Topics have featured China, including a sketch of a press conference with then Chinese President Hu Jintao berating President Barack Obama over the national debt. But Sohu Chairman and CEO Charles Zhang said he didn’t expect the show’s edgy themes to get them into trouble in China. “Things that are controversial in America are probably not controversial
in China,” he said. “And this talk show is in the spirit of fun and humor. I don’t think there will be any problem.” Chinese films and TV shows are routinely censored to prevent criticism of leaders or socially sensitive content, including sexually suggestive humor, and “SNL” frequently tests those boundaries. Zhang said the show, if popular in China, could inspire Chinese companies to produce shows with similar formats — although content was another matter. “It’s a different political setting,” he said at a news conference, also attended by American stand-up comedian Joe Wong and Beijing-born TV host and musician Kelly Cha. Sohu Video’s site, like many other Chinese online video sites, licenses many hit American TV shows alongside Japanese animation series, Chinese variety shows and in-house programs. Sohu’s early U.S. programs were “Lost” and “The Big Bang Theory,” and last year it obtained the exclusive online broadcast rights for the second season of hit reality show “The Voice of China,” which

NEW YORK — Juanita Moore, a groundbreaking actress and an Academy Award nominee for her role as Lana Turner’s black friend in the classic weeper “Imitation of Life,” has died. Actor Kirk Kelleykahn, her grandson, said that Moore collapsed and died Wednesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 99, according to Kelleykahn. Accounts of her age have differed over the years. Moore was only the fifth black performer to be nominated for an Oscar, receiving the nod for the glossy Douglas Sirk film that became a big hit and later gained a cult following. The 1959 tearjerker, based on a Fannie Hurst novel and a remake of a 1934 film, tells the story of a struggling white actress’ rise to stardom, her friendship with a black woman and how they team up to raise their daughters as single mothers. It brought supporting actress nominations for both Moore and Susan Kohner,
who played Moore’s daughter as a young adult attempting to pass as a white woman. Kohner’s own background is Czech and Mexican. By the end, Turner’s character is a star and her friend is essentially a servant. The death of Moore’s character sets up the sentimental ending. “The Oscar prestige was fine, but I worked more before I was nominated,” Moore told the Los Angeles Times in 1967. “Casting directors think an Oscar nominee is suddenly in another category. They couldn’t possibly ask you to do one or two days’ work. You wouldn’t accept it. And I’m sure I would.” Moore also had an active career in the theater, starting at Los Angeles’ Ebony Showcase Theatre in the early 1950s, a leading black-run theater. She also was a member of the celebrated Cambridge Players, with other performers including Esther Rolle and Helen Martin. Her grandson is currently president and CEO of the Cambridge group.

MANGUPURA - PD Pasar of Badung County reported a profit of approximately IDR 334 million in 2013. The amount was much smaller when compared to other county-owned enterprises like the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) Tirta Mangutama of Badung. “We recognize the revenue including the profit earned by PD Pasar is much smaller and it cannot even be compared to the PDAM,” said Managing Director of PD Pasar Badung, I Ketut Golak, Wednesday (Jan 1). The small income of PD Pasar Badung, said Golak, was not caused by less professional management, but because there were no products sold by PD Pasar Badung. It only provided services, so the revenue was practically derived from the sector contributing relatively small fund, like the levies of traders. “Management of the market tends to be social-oriented and not profit-oriented. For instance, it is related to empowerment and job opportunity creation and then how a market can generate the economy of the surrounding community. So, please do not see in terms of how
much can be earned,” said Golak. He further disclosed that revenue and profit in 2013 had met the target. In 2014, PD Pasar targeted to increase the revenue by considering the existing potential, including the possible increase in levy. Despite claiming not to remember the exact amount of the target in 2014, Golak mentioned the increase was not significant. Of the nine markets managed, the greatest source of revenue of the PD Pasar Badung was obtained from the Beringkit Cattle Market. Meanwhile, when compared to the other county-owned enterprise
of Badung, namely the PDAM Tirta Mangutama, the income of PD Pasar Badung was much smaller. The PDAM Tirta Mangutama targeted to deposit as much as IDR 10 billion to the regional treasury. It was just the deposit to regional treasury or not the total revenue. Director of PDAM Tirta Mangutama, Made Subarga Yasa, recently mentioned that in 2010 the PDAM Badung deposited IDR 5.06 billion to the local treasury. In the meantime, in 2011 and 2012, it respectively contributed as much as IDR 7.01 billion and IDR 8.2 billion. (kmb25)
DENPASAR - In the course of 2013, Bali was not free from infectious disease cases. Some newly infectious diseases were discovered, while there was also infectious diseases emerging in 2012 was absent in 2013. Top infectious disease case occurred in Bali was still dominated by dengue (DBD). The Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, explained that based on the data of 2013, the diarrhea cases stayed to dominate the infectious disease handled by the public health centers in Bali amounting to 30,465 cases. Diarrhea case was also dominant infectious disease in the public health centers in 2012 reaching 41,863. Other than diarrhea case, the most-served infectious disease at public health center was influenza and dengue. As for cases of infectious diseases treated in hospital was dominated by the cases of dengue (8,122 cases) diarrhea (3,753 cases) and pneumonia (2,351 cases). For outpatient care, the dominant case was diarrhea, influenza and dengue. Suarjaya explained that based on the data of infectious cases, compared to previous years there were several cases of disease indicating a rising trend. But in general, the disease such as diarrhea and dengue remained to dominate the infectious disease. “For urban areas, the infectious disease like dengue has increased,” said Suarjaya. The increasing infectious diseases in the community such as dengue and diarrhea could not be separated from the application of a healthy and clean living. The increase in both cases signified that people in Bali remained to pay less attention to their health and hygiene. “Diarrhea disease, for instance, has the transmission depending on the lifestyle of the community. If the environment is clean and applying a habit of washing hands and a culture of healthy foods it will not certainly occur,” he said. Aside from the cases such as diarrhea and dengue, another absent infectious disease in 2013 was the bird flu. According to Suarjaya, the last case of bird flu infection in humans occurred in the mid of 2012. “For the year 2013, no cases of bird flu occurred in humans. Hopefully, it could be maintained sustainably,” he said. In 2013, a new infectious disease was also found in Bali namely the infection of Legonella virus. The case was known to infect foreigners who traveled to Bali. “Based on WHO report there are some tourists positively infected by the Legonella. They have a history of spending holidays in Bali,” said Suarjaya. To follow up the information, the Health Agency then held an examination to hotels and villas. The Legionella was a virus that caused pneumonia and had great potential to death when getting late treatment. The virus lived in water at a certain temperature below 20 degrees Celsius. From the results of examination, the Legonella virus was found in some hotels in Nusa Dua and Kuta. It was located in the pool, water storage and air cooling. “At that time, we also advised in order their water storage areas such as swimming pools and air cooling must be regularly cleaned up because the virus is really like to live in water to a certain temperature,” explained Suarjaya. To prevent the infection of Legionella, the Health Agency regularly held examination at hotels or villas and ascertained the condition of water reservoirs to be clean and free from virus. (san)

After changing the room amenities from superior to super deluxe, now the hotel having the rice granary style is refreshed again from traditional Balinese concept into a modern Balinese concept. Upon entering the hotel area, the ambience looks like a countryside courtyard completed with hotel amenities like swimming pool, restaurant and spa. Executive Director, Dewi Rama, said although the hotel concept had been changed from traditional Balinese into a modern one, it would not leave the Balinese accent. “We let this remain unique by the use of reed roof. Each hotel room is equipped with open-plan living room, pool and garden with hotel facilities. We just make refurbishment to the exterior design,” she explained. The refurbishment, added Dewi Rama, was made to the exterior elements for refreshing the look. “Recently, we added to the lighting in the courtyard, near the pool and some of the hotel corners. Besides, we also added to the décor such as mirrors and paintings in the restaurant,” she said. In the future, she said, she would keep the quality of the 20 units of room owned that always accentuated the uniqueness, especially the environmental elements. “We will always improve the quality to maintain our guests that are mostly from Europe, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

For Obama, New Year’s Eve marks the end of a difficult year marred by the troubled rollout of his health care law and little progress on the rest of his domestic agenda. The White House is hoping for better results to come in 2014, particularly as the health law’s insurance benefits take effect on Jan. 1. The White House said the president planned to stay at home Tuesday night and ring in the new year with friends and family. Obama kicked off the last day of 2013 with an hour-long workout at a military base near his rented vacation home in Hawaii. He and first lady Michelle Obama, along with daughters Malia and Sasha, then headed to Hanauma Bay for a midday snorkeling outing on a sun-splashed day on the island of Oahu. The president then made his annual stop at Island Snow, a purveyor of the Hawaiian snow cone known as shave ice. His flavors of choice: cherry and lemon-lime. WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — Half a century after Karl Lagerfeld first drew her in a blue tunic and a plaid, buckled coat, the woman in a fashion sketch for the House of Tiziani still seems ready to saunter off the page and into the street. Other women in sketches along the same wall at Palm Beach Modern Auctions are drawn in outfits just as chic, but the one by Lagerfeld stands out in a crowd — much as the meticulously groomed head designer and creative director for Chanel does himself. “There’s attitude in her,” said Rico Baca, auctioneer and co-owner of the West Palm Beach auction house. Baca hopes that attitude and the Lagerfeld signature attracts buyers to a Jan. 11 auction of an archive of sketches for Tiziani designs. In the 1960s, the Rome-based Tiziani designed movie costumes and clothing for Elizabeth Taylor and other celebrities. It also was one of the European fashion houses where Lagerfeld freelanced, early in his career as a designer. Lagerfeld built his fashion legend through tenures at Chloe, Fendi, Chanel and his own eponymous brands. And the German-born designer is recognized worldwide for his white ponytail, black sunglasses and black-and-white attire that includes high, starched collars. He also has branched out into photography and film directing and has published a unique diet book after shedding more than 90 pounds (40 kilograms) to fit into clothes cut for younger, slimmer male models. At Tiziani, though, he was a hired hand, a young ready-to-wear designer among dozens of others doing similar work for bigger houses. The details Lagerfeld added to sketches for Taylor and other models — earrings, a flowing hem, a jacket’s trim or a specific shade of eye shadow — show the creativity of a young designer making his mark. “He finished off the fit,” Baca said. The sketches more than illustrate a designer’s vision for an outfit. They’re really blueprints used to communicate specific information to the team that produces each outfit — from the designer to the patternmaker, fabric buyers, salespeople and other staff. The Tiziani archive, which includes more than 300 drawings, highlights the shift in fashion from haute couture worn only by wealthy women to ready-to-wear designs that could be produced in large quantities at lower prices.

On that account, the economic growth would not be useless as it could not be enjoyed by the people of Bali. “Building Bali should not only be based on the economic aspect. There should be no reason for undertaking the reclamation on the grounds of developing the economy,” he said. Another lecturer from the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Windia, also agreed. Even, he proposed to slow down the development of tourism in Bali because Bali was assessed to have been overloaded. “The tourism growth in Bali should be slowed, not be speeded up and directed to the development of subak (Balinese irrigation cooperative). The Masterplan for the Acceleration and Expansion of the Indonesian Economic Development (MP3EI) program should also be revised by not focusing on the growth of tourism in Bali,” he said. Therefore, the addition of parking areas was an urgent need. He hoped the proposal to the Management Board could receive a response so the convenience could be enjoyed by visitors. According to him, the problem of parking service had occurred since the past few years. Meanwhile, the number of tourists visiting Tanah Lot throughout 2013 reached 2,842,281 people. Such amount exceeded the target at 2,012,500 people. The visit made the revenue reach IDR 40 billion, exceeding the target of IDR 38 billion. Compared to the tourist visit in 2012, the visit showed an increase of some 10.28 percent with a total visit of 2,577,299 people. The 35-year-old took off from China’s Fujian province on Wednesday morning in an attempt to land on one of the Tokyo-controlled islands, the Japan Coast Guard official said. It was an ambitious goal -- hot-air balloons travel largely at the mercy of the wind, and the islands are tiny specks in the East China Sea 359 kilometres (223 miles) away from the take-off point. The government has already relaxed foreign direct investment (FDI) rules in such sectors as civil aviation, retail, telecommunications, defence and oil refineries to loosen shackles on the long-protected economy. “The government will continue its endeavour for liberalising FDI policy further in the coming weeks... for attracting foreign investments,” Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said. India is struggling to increase its attractiveness to overseas business to buttress a weak rupee and to support growth with the election due by May. But political opposition has made economic liberalisation a stop-start process. Five percent annual growth -- the slowest in a decade -- a string of graft scandals, suffocating bureaucracy and project approval delays have soured the investor mood on Asia’s third-largest economy. But in a vote of confidence in India’s longterm potential with its increasingly affluent consumers, FDI interest has shown signs of picking up lately. Earlier this week the foreign investment regulator cleared plans by British retail giant Tesco and Vodafone, the world’s largest
mobile phone operator, to invest over $1.5 billion in India. “The bold decisions of the government (to liberalise the economy) have resonated with the global community and we have seen results in the last few months,” Sharma said in a New Year’s Day message. Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors pumped in around $20 billion into financial markets in 2013, down from $24 billion in 2012, according to a chamber of commerce study. India’s immediate economic prospects remain downbeat, analysts add. DETROIT — Italian automaker Fiat SpA announced that it reached an agreement to acquire the remaining shares of Chrysler for $3.65 billion in payments to a union-controlled trust fund. Fiat already owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler’s shares, with the remaining 41.5 percent held by a United Auto Workers union trust fund that pays health care bills for retirees. Under the deal announced Wednesday, Fiat will make an initial payment of $1.9 billion to the fund, plus an additional $1.75 billion upon closing the deal. Chrysler will also make additional payments totaling $700 million to the fund as part of an agreement with the UAW. The deal is expected to close on or before Jan. 20, according to a statement from Chrysler. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of both Fiat and Chrysler, has long sought to acquire the union’s shares in order to combine the two companies. “The unified ownership structure will now allow us to fully execute our vision of creating a global automaker that is truly unique in terms of mix of experience, perspective and know-how, a solid and open organization,” Marchionne said in a statement issued by Turin, Italy-based Fiat. The deal eliminates the need for an initial public offering of the union fund’s stake, which analysts had previously valued at $5.6 billion. Fiat went to court last year seeking a judgment on the price, but the trial date was set for next September. Marchionne can’t spend Chrysler’s cash on Fiat’s operations unless the companies merge. In recent months he made it clear that he preferred to settle the dispute without an IPO, but filed the paperwork for the offering in September at the trust’s request. Chrysler’s profits have helped prop up Fiat on the balance sheet as the Italian automaker struggles in a down European market. The Auburn Hills, Michigan, automaker earned $464 million in the third quarter on U.S. sales of the Ram pickup and Jeep Grand Cherokee, its ninth-straight profitable quarter. Rejang Legong: A dance presentation of Angels to Gods

AMLAPURA - It has become a tradition for Jasri customary villagers of Karangasem to present various dances like the Rejang, Abuang and Legong in Bale Agung temple. These sacred dances are part of a ritual series known as Meprani in conjunction with the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan feast day. All villagers present pekenak to Ulun Busali deity as venerated gods in Bale Agung temple. According to Chief of Jasri customary village, I Nyoman Sutirtayasa, the Rejang, Abuang and Legong dance symbolized the sacrifice and an expression of gratitude for the abundance of worldly endowment to deities who would return to Java Island. “These dances are meant to entertain and please the deities because it is believed when returning to Java they will bestow graces of prosperity. On that account, it will give the source of life for Balinese people,” he said. Local people believed, explained Sutirtayasa, the series of dharma victory day
(Galungan-Kuningan) was initiated since the deities came down from Java to Bali namely on Sugian Jawa and they were ready to receive devotee’s worship. Furthermore, they were presented with oblation on Galungan and Kuningan. Three days after Kuningan, the deities were presented with aci prani accompanied with the performance of Rejang, Abuang and Legong dance. The dances were performed by daa (virgin girls) from 33 customary hamlets existing in the area. They danced hand in hand clockwise on the courtyard of Bale Agung temple accom-
panied with gamelan music. They danced with graceful movement in attires with typical teterek accessories on the back and headdress embellished with young banana leaf ornament. More interestingly, the Rejang dance with distinctive movement was never taught or learned by the daa. However, when it was time to perform the dance they would be able to do it. At the end of the Meprani ritual it was marked with the disposal of used ritual paraphernalia of Kuningan celebration to the sea. A senior figure of local customary village, I Nyoman Putra Adnyana, said that presentation of such sacred dances like the Rejang, Abuang and Legong was originated from the stage of Rejang dance in Puseh temple. However, it was then also presented to deity abiding in the Bale Agung temple. “Theologically, the ishta devata (venerated gods) abiding in Bale Agung is the Tri Murti symbolizing the omnipotence of God in his manifestation as the Generator, Operator and Destroyer,” he said.

KIEV, Ukraine — About 15,000 people marched through the streets of Ukraine’s capital on Wednesday night to mark the 105th birthday of Stepan Bandera, glorified by some as a leader of Ukraine’s liberation movement and dismissed by others as a Nazi collaborator. Many of the protesters carried torches, and some wore the uniform of a Ukrainian division of the German army during World War II. Others chanted “Ukraine above all!” and “Bandera, come and bring order!” However, many of Bandera’s followers sought to play down his collaboration with the Germans in the fight for Ukraine’s independence as the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Ukraine’s foremost nationalist organization in the first half of the 20th century. Bandera is a deeply divisive figure in Ukraine, glorified by many in western Ukraine as a freedom fighter but dismissed by millions in eastern and southeastern Ukraine as a traitor in the Soviet Union’s struggle against the occupying German army. Bandera was a leader of Ukraine’s nationalist movement in the 1930s and 1940s, which included an insurgent army that fought alongside Nazi soldiers during part of the Second World War. Bandera’s supporters claim they sided with the Nazis against the Soviet army, believing that Adolf Hitler would grant Ukraine independence. Ihor Mykolaiv, one of Wednesday night’s torch bearers, described Bandera as a man “who fought for the country, the faith and the ideals,” but
insisted that “Bandera never was on the Germans’ side.” However, Bandera did collaborate with the Nazis and receive German funding for subversive acts in the USSR as Germans forces advanced across Poland and into the Soviet Union at the start of the Second World War. He fell out with the Nazis in 1941, after the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists declared Ukraine’s independence, and he was sent to a concentration camp. Bandera won back Germany’s support in 1944 and was released. The German army was hoping the Ukrainian insurgents could stop the advance of the Soviet army, which had regained control over much of eastern Ukraine by then. Bandera set up a headquarters in Berlin and oversaw the training of Ukrainian insurgents by the German army. His group also was involved in the ethnic cleansing that killed tens of thousands of Poles across the Austro-Hungarian Empire between 1942 and 1944. The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists portrayed
Russians, Poles, Hungarians and Jews — pretty much all minorities living in Western Ukraine — as aliens and encouraged locals to “destroy” Poles and Jews. Bandera died in Germany in 1959. In January 2010, less than a month before his term in office was to end, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko posthumously decorated Bandera with the Hero of Ukraine award. That led to harsh criticism by Jewish and Russian groups. The award was annulled by a court in January 2011 under President Viktor Yanukovych. MOGADISHU - Islamist militants in Somalia said on Thursday that they carried out the triple bombing on a Mogadishu hotel that killed at least 11 people. Al Shabaab, who are battling African peacekeepers for control of territory in southern and central Somalia, said its bombers had targeted intelligence officials who were meeting at the Jazira hotel at the time. “The apostates are the eyes and the ears of the invaders and these attacks serve as a well-deserved punishment for their role in guiding and assisting the invading forces in their crusade,” al Shabaab spokesman Ali Mohamud Rage said in a statement. Al Shabaab said it had killed more than a dozen people in Wednesday’s attack. A private ambulance service director said his medics had recovered at least 11 bodies. The assault on the Jazira hotel, one of the securest places in the coastal capital, underscored worries in neighboring countries and beyond that Somalia could slip back into anarchy if recent military gains against rebels are not consolidated. An attack on a Kenyan shopping mall in September in which dozens of people were killed highlighted the militants’ ability to strike beyond Somalia’s borders. Islamist suicide bombers struck the Jazira hotel in September 2012 as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was giving a news conference just two days after his election by lawmakers.
Helicopter rescue begins for passengers stuck in Antarctic ice

SYDNEY - A Chinese helicopter has reached a Russian ship stranded in Antarctica for nine days and is beginning to pick up 52 passengers who spent Christmas and the New Year trapped in ice, the expedition leader said on Thursday. The helicopter from the Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon will take all the passengers from the ice-bound Akademik Shokalskiy and transfer them to an Australian Antarctic supply ship, the Aurora Australis. Chris Turney, the leader of the private expedition, said conditions had improved enough to mount the rescue after days of blizzards, fog and shifting sea ice. “The Chinese helicopter has arrived @ the Shokalskiy. It’s 100% we’re off! A huge thanks to all,” Turney posted on Twitter. Television pictures showed the helicopter checking out a makeshift landing pad on the ice then apparently picking up the first group of 12 passengers. The Russian ship left New Zealand on November 28 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of an Antarctic journey led by famed Australian explorer Douglas Mawson. It became trapped on December 24, 100 nautical miles east of French Antarctic station Dumont D’Urville and about 1,500 nautical miles south of Australia’s southern island state of Tasmania. Everyone on board was believed to be in good condition and they were never in any great danger. The Chinese ship got within sight of the Akademik Shokalskiy on Saturday, but turned back after failing to break through the ice, which was more than 3 meters (10 feet) thick in some place. Two other vessels, Australia’s Aurora Australis and a French flagged ship, also tried to help but failed to reach the ship because of strong wind and heavy snow. Earlier on Thursday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority which is coordinating the rescue, had said the rescue had again been thwarted by ice and bad weather.

TANGERANG - It was the dream of sporting glory that drew talented Cameroonian striker Salomon Bengondo to Indonesia -- but his story ended in poverty, illness and an untimely death, in a country failing to pay its footballers. The withholding of wages by Indonesian clubs has reached “catastrophic proportions” according to international players’ union FIFPro -- and Bengondo is the second foreign player known to have died after going unpaid. In 2012 Paraguayan striker Diego Mendieta died of a viral infection after he too was unable to afford treatment, following months without wages. Bengondo arrived in Indonesia in 2005, a promising young footballer who hoped to build a career in Southeast Asia’s biggest nation. “He had every chance, he had great hopes,” his brother Beliby Ferdinand told AFP this week at the modest house that they used to share, near the capital Jakarta. Bengondo died last month at the age of 32, unable to afford hospital treatment for a mystery illness. His former club, Persipro Bond-U, still owed him large sums of money, according to his brother and Indonesian football officials. JAKARTA - The Social Security Providers (BPJS) has to give priority attention to about 1.8 million people with community and social problems (PMKS), a social affairs ministry official stated, here on Thursday. “These are the neglected lot of people such as street children, elderly, disabled persons and loiterers who have to be given priority during the validation process in the coming six months, as they still stay in houses for street children,” stated Sapto Waluyu, expert staff of the Ministry of Social Affairs for public relations and governance. He noted that Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri had signed a Social Affairs Minister’s Decree No. 146 and No. 147/HUK/2013 per December 23 on the criteria of the poor and on the recipients of contribution assistance (PBI). Based on the Law on National Security System (UU SJSN) No.40/2004, the Law on Social Security Management Agency (BPJS) No. 24/2011 and Law on the Handling of the Poor No. 13/2011, the Social Affairs Minister shall decide on the recipients of contribution assistance (PBI) from the underprivileged group of people. The number of underprivileged registered with the PBI list stood at 86.4 million people with a budget set aside for it amounting to Rp19.3 trillion. The implementation of the BPJS has also sparked a protest because based on the Social Safety Net Program Data Collection (PPLS) in 2011 there were 96.7 million poor people. If the PBI list only covers 86.4 million, it means that there will be 10.3 million poor people who will not benefit from the services. Social observer Dr Bagus Aryo noted that data accuracy will decide the success of the BPJS. “The people who are not yet included in the PBI list could be covered with the regional social insurance (Jamkesda) funds based on their respective domiciles. Then they should gradually be integrated into the BPJS system,” Bagus Aryo explained. He added that the ministry of social affairs should ensure that the data integration takes place as soon as possible so that there will not be any poor with no access to health security service wherever they are. Aryo gave a positive response to the implementation of the BPJS on health which was introduced on January 1, and which will continue with the introduction of yet another BPJS in the manpower sector in 2015. “This is one of the characteristics of a prospering nation as suggested by the Indonesian Constitution. The state is obligated to provide social security for its citizens. Thus, Indonesia has now entered the era of universal health coverage in its social security system where as advanced nations have had such systems in the post World War II period,” he emphasized.

Vladimir Petkovic declared himself to be “proudly” continuing in his job as Lazio coach, he said in a statement on Wednesday amid media reports that his predecessor Edoardo Reja took charge of training for the last three days. SAO PAULO — One of six Brazilian World Cup stadiums that had to be completed before the end of 2013 was symbolically delivered on New Year’s Eve, although it won’t be fully ready until the end of the month. Local World Cup organizers in the northeastern city of Natal lighted up the Arena das Dunas stadium for the first time on Tuesday to symbolize the venue’s completion. The official inauguration, however, will only happen “probably” on Jan. 20, organizers said in a statement Wednesday. Brazil starts the year without six of the 12 World Cup stadiums ready even though FIFA had set the end of 2013 as the final deadline. Six venues had been built for the Confederations Cup this year. Football’s governing body usually wants all venues ready at least six months before the tournament starts so local organizers can host enough test events. Brazilian organizers announced during the World Cup draw in December that none of the remaining six venues were expected to be delivered by the FIFA deadline. Delays have included financial problems, workers safety issues and construction-site accidents. Three construction workers died at stadiums late last year — one who fell from about 115 feet (35 meters) at the Arena Amazonia in the jungle city of Manaus, and two who were killed when a crane collapsed while hoisting a roofing structure at the stadium that will host the World Cup opener in Sao Paulo on June 12. The Arena Amazonia is expected to be completed by the end of the month, but the stadium in Sao Paulo won’t be ready until April.

SAO PAULO — One of six Brazilian World Cup stadiums that had to be completed before the end of 2013 was symbolically delivered on New Year’s Eve, although it won’t be fully ready until the end of the month. Local World Cup organizers in the northeastern city of Natal lighted up the Arena das Dunas stadium for the first time on Tuesday to symbolize the venue’s completion. The official inauguration, however, will only happen “probably” on Jan. 20, organizers said in a statement Wednesday. Brazil starts the year without six of the 12 World Cup stadiums ready even though FIFA had set the end of 2013 as the final deadline. Six venues had been built for the Confederations Cup this year. Football’s governing body usually wants all venues ready at least six months before the tournament starts so local organizers can host enough test events. Brazilian organizers announced during the World Cup draw in December that none of the remaining six venues were expected to be delivered by the FIFA deadline. Delays have included financial problems, workers safety issues and construction-site accidents. Three construction workers died at stadiums late last year — one who fell from about 115 feet (35 meters) at the Arena Amazonia in the jungle city of Manaus, and two who were killed when a crane collapsed while hoisting a roofing structure at the stadium that will host the World Cup opener in Sao Paulo on June 12. The Arena Amazonia is expected to be completed by the end of the month, but the stadium in Sao Paulo won’t be ready until April.

KIEV, Ukraine — About 15,000 people marched through the streets of Ukraine’s capital on Wednesday night to mark the 105th birthday of Stepan Bandera, glorified by some as a leader of Ukraine’s liberation movement and dismissed by others as a Nazi collaborator. Many of the protesters carried torches, and some wore the uniform of a Ukrainian division of the German army during World War II. Others chanted “Ukraine above all!” and “Bandera, come and bring order!” However, many of Bandera’s followers sought to play down his collaboration with the Germans in the fight for Ukraine’s independence as the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Ukraine’s foremost nationalist organization in the first half of the 20th century. Bandera is a deeply divisive figure in Ukraine, glorified by many in western Ukraine as a freedom fighter but dismissed by millions in eastern and southeastern Ukraine as a traitor in the Soviet Union’s struggle against the occupying German army. Bandera was a leader of Ukraine’s nationalist movement in the 1930s and 1940s, which included an insurgent army that fought alongside Nazi soldiers during part of the Second World War. Bandera’s supporters claim they sided with the Nazis against the Soviet army, believing that Adolf Hitler would grant Ukraine independence. Ihor Mykolaiv, one of Wednesday night’s torch bearers, described Bandera as a man “who fought for the country, the faith and the ideals,” but
insisted that “Bandera never was on the Germans’ side.” However, Bandera did collaborate with the Nazis and receive German funding for subversive acts in the USSR as Germans forces advanced across Poland and into the Soviet Union at the start of the Second World War. He fell out with the Nazis in 1941, after the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists declared Ukraine’s independence, and he was sent to a concentration camp. Bandera won back Germany’s support in 1944 and was released. The German army was hoping the Ukrainian insurgents could stop the advance of the Soviet army, which had regained control over much of eastern Ukraine by then. Bandera set up a headquarters in Berlin and oversaw the training of Ukrainian insurgents by the German army. His group also was involved in the ethnic cleansing that killed tens of thousands of Poles across the Austro-Hungarian Empire between 1942 and 1944. The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists portrayed
Russians, Poles, Hungarians and Jews — pretty much all minorities living in Western Ukraine — as aliens and encouraged locals to “destroy” Poles and Jews. Bandera died in Germany in 1959. In January 2010, less than a month before his term in office was to end, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko posthumously decorated Bandera with the Hero of Ukraine award. That led to harsh criticism by Jewish and Russian groups. The award was annulled by a court in January 2011 under President Viktor Yanukovych. Kiev has now been the scene of massive pro-European protests for more than a month, triggered by Yanukovych’s decision to ditch a key deal with the European Union in favor of building stronger ties with Russia. The nationalist party Svoboda, which organized Wednesday’s rally, was one of the key forces behind the pro-European protests, but other opposition factions have said the Bandera rally is unrelated to the ongoing protest encampment in central Kiev.
MOGADISHU - Islamist militants in Somalia said on Thursday that they carried out the triple bombing on a Mogadishu hotel that killed at least 11 people. Al Shabaab, who are battling African peacekeepers for control of territory in southern and central Somalia, said its bombers had targeted intelligence officials who were meeting at the Jazira hotel at the time. “The apostates are the eyes and the ears of the invaders and these attacks serve as a well-deserved punishment for their role in guiding and assisting the invading forces in their crusade,” al Shabaab spokesman Ali Mohamud Rage said in a statement. Al Shabaab said it had killed more than a dozen people in Wednesday’s attack. A private ambulance service director said his medics had recovered at least 11 bodies. The assault on the Jazira hotel, one of the securest places in the coastal capital, underscored worries in neighboring countries and beyond that Somalia could slip back into anarchy if recent military gains against rebels are not consolidated. An attack on a Kenyan shopping mall in September in which dozens of people were killed highlighted the militants’ ability to strike beyond Somalia’s borders. Islamist suicide bombers struck the Jazira hotel in September 2012 as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was giving a news conference just two days after his election by lawmakers.
Helicopter rescue begins for passengers stuck in Antarctic ice

SYDNEY - A Chinese helicopter has reached a Russian ship stranded in Antarctica for nine days and is beginning to pick up 52 passengers who spent Christmas and the New Year trapped in ice, the expedition leader said on Thursday. The helicopter from the Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon will take all the passengers from the ice-bound Akademik Shokalskiy and transfer them to an Australian Antarctic supply ship, the Aurora Australis. Chris Turney, the leader of the private expedition, said conditions had improved enough to mount the rescue after days of blizzards, fog and shifting sea ice. “The Chinese helicopter has arrived @ the Shokalskiy. It’s 100% we’re off! A huge thanks to all,” Turney posted on Twitter. Television pictures showed the helicopter checking out a makeshift landing pad on the ice then apparently picking up the first group of 12 passengers. The Russian ship left New Zealand on November 28 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of an Antarctic journey led by famed Australian explorer Douglas Mawson. It became trapped on December 24, 100 nautical miles east of French Antarctic station Dumont D’Urville and about 1,500 nautical miles south of Australia’s southern island state of Tasmania. Everyone on board was believed to be in good condition and they were never in any great danger. The Chinese ship got within sight of the Akademik Shokalskiy on Saturday, but turned back after failing to break through the ice, which was more than 3 meters (10 feet) thick in some place. Two other vessels, Australia’s Aurora Australis and a French flagged ship, also tried to help but failed to reach the ship because of strong wind and heavy snow. Earlier on Thursday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority which is coordinating the rescue, had said the rescue had again been thwarted by ice and bad weather.

TANGERANG - It was the dream of sporting glory that drew talented Cameroonian striker Salomon Bengondo to Indonesia -- but his story ended in poverty, illness and an untimely death, in a country failing to pay its footballers. The withholding of wages by Indonesian clubs has reached “catastrophic proportions” according to international players’ union FIFPro -- and Bengondo is the second foreign player known to have died after going unpaid. In 2012 Paraguayan striker Diego Mendieta died of a viral infection after he too was unable to afford treatment, following months without wages. Bengondo arrived in Indonesia in 2005, a promising young footballer who hoped to build a career in Southeast Asia’s biggest nation. “He had every chance, he had great hopes,” his brother Beliby Ferdinand told AFP this week at the modest house that they used to share, near the capital Jakarta. Bengondo died last month at the age of 32, unable to afford hospital treatment for a mystery illness. JAKARTA - The Social Security Providers (BPJS) has to give priority attention to about 1.8 million people with community and social problems (PMKS), a social affairs ministry official stated, here on Thursday. “These are the neglected lot of people such as street children, elderly, disabled persons and loiterers who have to be given priority during the validation process in the coming six months, as they still stay in houses for street children,” stated Sapto Waluyu, expert staff of the Ministry of Social Affairs for public relations and governance. He noted that Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri had signed a Social Affairs Minister’s Decree No. 146 and No. 147/HUK/2013 per December 23 on the criteria of the poor and on the recipients of contribution assistance (PBI). Based on the Law on National Security System (UU SJSN) No.40/2004, the Law on Social Security Management Agency (BPJS) No. 24/2011 and Law on the Handling of the Poor No. 13/2011, the Social Affairs Minister shall decide on the recipients of contribution assistance (PBI) from the underprivileged group of people. The number of underprivileged registered with the PBI list stood at 86.4 million people with a budget set aside for it amounting to Rp19.3 trillion. The implementation of the BPJS has also sparked a protest because based on the Social Safety Net Program Data Collection (PPLS) in 2011 there were 96.7 million poor people. If the PBI list only covers 86.4 million, it means that there will be 10.3 million poor people who will not benefit from the services. Social observer Dr Bagus Aryo noted that data accuracy will decide the success of the BPJS. “The people who are not yet included in the PBI list could be covered with the regional social insurance (Jamkesda) funds based on their respective domiciles. Then they should gradually be integrated into the BPJS system,” Bagus Aryo explained. He added that the ministry of social affairs should ensure that the data integration takes place as soon as possible so that there will not be any poor with no access to health security service wherever they are. Aryo gave a positive response to the implementation of the BPJS on health which was introduced on January 1, and which will continue with the introduction of yet another BPJS in the manpower sector in 2015. “This is one of the characteristics of a prospering nation as suggested by the Indonesian Constitution. The state is obligated to provide social security for its citizens. Thus, Indonesia has now entered the era of universal health coverage in its social security system where as advanced nations have had such systems in the post World War II period,” he emphasized.

India is struggling to increase its attractiveness to overseas business to buttress a weak rupee and to support growth with the election due by May. But political opposition has made economic liberalisation a stop-start process. Five percent annual growth -- the slowest in a decade -- a string of graft scandals, suffocating bureaucracy and project approval delays have soured the investor mood on Asia’s third-largest economy. But in a vote of confidence in India’s longterm potential with its increasingly affluent consumers, FDI interest has shown signs of picking up lately. DETROIT — Italian automaker Fiat SpA announced that it reached an agreement to acquire the remaining shares of Chrysler for $3.65 billion in payments to a union-controlled trust fund. Fiat already owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler’s shares, with the remaining 41.5 percent held by a United Auto Workers union trust fund that pays health care bills for retirees. Under the deal announced Wednesday, Fiat will make an initial payment of $1.9 billion to the fund, plus an additional $1.75 billion upon closing the deal. Chrysler will also make additional payments totaling $700 million to the fund as part of an agreement with the UAW. The deal is expected to close on or before Jan. 20, according to a statement from Chrysler. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of both Fiat and Chrysler, has long sought to acquire the union’s shares in order to combine the two companies. “The unified ownership structure will now allow us to fully execute our vision of creating a global automaker that is truly unique in terms of mix of experience, perspective and know-how, a solid and open organization,” Marchionne said in a statement issued by Turin, Italy-based Fiat. The deal eliminates the need for an initial public offering of the union fund’s stake, which analysts had previously valued at $5.6 billion. Fiat went to court last year seeking a judgment on the price, but the trial date was set for next September. Marchionne can’t spend Chrysler’s cash on Fiat’s operations unless the companies merge. In recent months he made it clear that he preferred to settle the dispute without an IPO, but filed the paperwork for the offering in September at the trust’s request. Chrysler’s profits have helped prop up Fiat on the balance sheet as the Italian automaker struggles in a down European market. The Auburn Hills, Michigan, automaker earned $464 million in the third quarter on U.S. sales of the Ram pickup and Jeep Grand Cherokee, its ninth-straight profitable quarter. Rejang Legong: A dance presentation of Angels to Gods

AMLAPURA - It has become a tradition for Jasri customary villagers of Karangasem to present various dances like the Rejang, Abuang and Legong in Bale Agung temple. These sacred dances are part of a ritual series known as Meprani in conjunction with the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan feast day. All villagers present pekenak to Ulun Busali deity as venerated gods in Bale Agung temple. According to Chief of Jasri customary village, I Nyoman Sutirtayasa, the Rejang, Abuang and Legong dance symbolized the sacrifice and an expression of gratitude for the abundance of worldly endowment to deities who would return to Java Island. “These dances are meant to entertain and please the deities because it is believed when returning to Java they will bestow graces of prosperity. On that account, it will give the source of life for Balinese people,” he said. Local people believed, explained Sutirtayasa, the series of dharma victory day
(Galungan-Kuningan) was initiated since the deities came down from Java to Bali namely on Sugian Jawa and they were ready to receive devotee’s worship. Furthermore, they were presented with oblation on Galungan and Kuningan. Three days after Kuningan, the deities were presented with aci prani accompanied with the performance of Rejang, Abuang and Legong dance. The dances were performed by daa (virgin girls) from 33 customary hamlets existing in the area. They danced hand in hand clockwise on the courtyard of Bale Agung temple accom-
panied with gamelan music. They danced with graceful movement in attires with typical teterek accessories on the back and headdress embellished with young banana leaf ornament. More interestingly, the Rejang dance with distinctive movement was never taught or learned by the daa. However, when it was time to perform the dance they would be able to do it. At the end of the Meprani ritual it was marked with the disposal of used ritual paraphernalia of Kuningan celebration to the sea. A senior figure of local customary village, I Nyoman Putra Adnyana, said that presentation of such sacred dances like the Rejang, Abuang and Legong was originated from the stage of Rejang dance in Puseh temple. However, it was then also presented to deity abiding in the Bale Agung temple. “Theologically, the ishta devata (venerated gods) abiding in Bale Agung is the Tri Murti symbolizing the omnipotence of God in his manifestation as the Generator, Operator and Destroyer,” he said.

Tokyo - A Chinese man who tried to fly a hot-air balloon hundreds of kilometres to islands disputed between Beijing and Tokyo was rescued by Japan’s coastguard after ditching in the sea, an official said Thursday. The 35-year-old took off from China’s Fujian province on Wednesday morning in an attempt to land on one of the Tokyo-controlled islands, the Japan Coast Guard official said. It was an ambitious goal -- hot-air balloons travel largely at the mercy of the wind, and the islands are tiny specks in the East China Sea 359 kilometres (223 miles) away from the take-off point. They are hotly disputed between Beijing, which regards them as its territory and calls them Diaoyu, and Tokyo, which calls them Senkaku. Tensions have at times reached feverish heights. In the event the pilot sent a request for help several hours into his flight and ditched in the sea, with a Japanese rescue helicopter picking him up 22 kilometres south of his goal, the official said. BANGKOK - Thai stocks and the baht currency tumbled on Thursday as uncertainty deepened about a February election that anti-government forces are determined to block in their bid to oust Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Investors are worried a February 2 poll will not go ahead, leaving Yingluck’s government exposed to prolonged attacks by opponents. National Security Council chief Paradorn Pattanatabut said on Thursday security agencies were considering declaring a state of emergency after protesters said they would try to “shut down” the capital from January 13. “The situation has intensified,” Paradorn told Reuters. “We may need to call for tougher measures and security agencies have planned for that.” The latest bout of political tumult erupted in November after a blunder by the ruling Puea Thai Party, which tried to push through an unpopular amnesty bill that would have annulled the jail sentence of Yingluck’s self-exiled brother and former premier, Thaksin Shinawatra, the divisive tycoon at the heart of eight years of on-off conflict. Protesters say Yingluck is a puppet of Dubai-based Thaksin, who they call a corrupt crony capitalist who has subverted a democratic system that needs to be suspended and overhauled. WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — Half a century after Karl Lagerfeld first drew her in a blue tunic and a plaid, buckled coat, the woman in a fashion sketch for the House of Tiziani still seems ready to saunter off the page and into the street. Other women in sketches along the same wall at Palm Beach Modern Auctions are drawn in outfits just as chic, but the one by Lagerfeld stands out in a crowd — much as the meticulously groomed head designer and creative director for Chanel does himself. “There’s attitude in her,” said Rico Baca, auctioneer and co-owner of the West Palm Beach auction house. Baca hopes that attitude and the Lagerfeld signature attracts buyers to a Jan. 11 auction of an archive of sketches for Tiziani designs. In the 1960s, the Rome-based Tiziani designed movie costumes and clothing for Elizabeth Taylor and other celebrities. It also was one of the European fashion houses where Lagerfeld freelanced, early in his career as a designer. Lagerfeld built his fashion legend through tenures at Chloe, Fendi, Chanel and his own eponymous brands. And the German-born designer is recognized worldwide for his white ponytail, black sunglasses and black-and-white attire that includes high, starched collars. Let tourism be developed by NTT and NTB because the Bali tourism has been growing rapidly,” he concluded. The Bank Indonesia Representative Office for Region III Bali and Nusa Tenggara noted the economy of Bali and Nusa Tenggara contributed about 3 percent to the national economy. Until the third quarter of 2013, it grew by 5.72 percent or higher compared to the previous quarter reaching 5.33 percent. The economic growth of Bali and Nusa Tenggara region for the year 2013 was estimated to reach 5.60 percent meaning to be higher compared to the previous year of 4.01 percent. It was still in line with the economic performance of Bali which grew by 5.97 percent though it was lower than the growth in the same period. According to Toya, his party proposed the addition of parking area, while the system was submitted to the Management Board. “We propose to utilize the land property of Pakendungan Temple or buy private land. Everything we submit to the Management Board,” he explained. All this time, his party implemented mall system to manage the parking service. By the system, he said, it could be applied automatically to groups of travel agencies. “Travel agencies will maximally park for one hour. But, private vehicles cannot be forced,” he said.
Therefore, the addition of parking areas was an urgent need. He hoped the proposal to the Management Board could receive a response so the convenience could be enjoyed by visitors. According to him, the problem of parking service had occurred since the past few years. Meanwhile, the number of tourists visiting Tanah Lot throughout 2013 reached 2,842,281 people. Such amount exceeded the target at 2,012,500 people. The visit made the revenue reach IDR 40 billion, exceeding the target of IDR 38 billion. Compared to the tourist visit in 2012, the visit showed an increase of some 10.28 percent with a total visit of 2,577,299 people. MANGUPURA - PD Pasar of Badung County reported a profit of approximately IDR 334 million in 2013. The amount was much smaller when compared to other county-owned enterprises like the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) Tirta Mangutama of Badung. “We recognize the revenue including the profit earned by PD Pasar is much smaller and it cannot even be compared to the PDAM,” said Managing Director of PD Pasar Badung, I Ketut Golak, Wednesday (Jan 1). The small income of PD Pasar Badung, said Golak, was not caused by less professional management, but because there were no products sold by PD Pasar Badung. It only provided services, so the revenue was practically derived from the sector contributing relatively small fund, like the levies of traders. “Management of the market tends to be social-oriented and not profit-oriented. For instance, it is related to empowerment and job opportunity creation and then how a market can generate the economy of the surrounding community. So, please do not see in terms of how
much can be earned,” said Golak. He further disclosed that revenue and profit in 2013 had met the target. In 2014, PD Pasar targeted to increase the revenue by considering the existing potential, including the possible increase in levy. Despite claiming not to remember the exact amount of the target in 2014, Golak mentioned the increase was not significant. Of the nine markets managed, the greatest source of revenue of the PD Pasar Badung was obtained from the Beringkit Cattle Market. Meanwhile, when compared to the other county-owned enterprise
of Badung, namely the PDAM Tirta Mangutama, the income of PD Pasar Badung was much smaller. The PDAM Tirta Mangutama targeted to deposit as much as IDR 10 billion to the regional treasury. It was just the deposit to regional treasury or not the total revenue. Director of PDAM Tirta Mangutama, Made Subarga Yasa, recently mentioned that in 2010 the PDAM Badung deposited IDR 5.06 billion to the local treasury. DENPASAR - In the course of 2013, Bali was not free from infectious disease cases. Some newly infectious diseases were discovered, while there was also infectious diseases emerging in 2012 was absent in 2013. Top infectious disease case occurred in Bali was still dominated by dengue (DBD). The Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, explained that based on the data of 2013, the diarrhea cases stayed to dominate the infectious disease handled by the public health centers in Bali amounting to 30,465 cases. Diarrhea case was also dominant infectious disease in the public health centers in 2012 reaching 41,863. Other than diarrhea case, the most-served infectious disease at public health center was influenza and dengue. As for cases of infectious diseases treated in hospital was dominated by the cases of dengue (8,122 cases) diarrhea (3,753 cases) and pneumonia (2,351 cases). For outpatient care, the dominant case was diarrhea, influenza and dengue. Suarjaya explained that based on the data of infectious cases, compared to previous years there were several cases of disease indicating a rising trend. But in general, the disease such as diarrhea and dengue remained to dominate the infectious disease. “For urban areas, the infectious disease like dengue has increased,” said Suarjaya. The increasing infectious diseases in the community such as dengue and diarrhea could not be separated from the application of a healthy and clean living. The increase in both cases signified that people in Bali remained to pay less attention to their health and hygiene. “Diarrhea disease, for instance, has the transmission depending on the lifestyle of the community. If the environment is clean and applying a habit of washing hands and a culture of healthy foods it will not certainly occur,” he said. Aside from the cases such as diarrhea and dengue, another absent infectious disease in 2013 was the bird flu. According to Suarjaya, the last case of bird flu infection in humans occurred in the mid of 2012. “For the year 2013, no cases of bird flu occurred in humans. Hopefully, it could be maintained sustainably,” he said. In 2013, a new infectious disease was also found in Bali namely the infection of Legonella virus. The case was known to infect foreigners who traveled to Bali. “Based on WHO report there are some tourists positively infected by the Legonella. They have a history of spending holidays in Bali,” said Suarjaya. To follow up the information, the Health Agency then held an examination to hotels and villas. The Legionella was a virus that caused pneumonia and had great potential to death when getting late treatment. The virus lived in water at a certain temperature below 20 degrees Celsius. From the results of examination, the Legonella virus was found in some hotels in Nusa Dua and Kuta. It was located in the pool, water storage and air cooling. “At that time, we also advised in order their water storage areas such as swimming pools and air cooling must be regularly cleaned up because the virus is really like to live in water to a certain temperature,” explained Suarjaya. To prevent the infection of Legionella, the Health Agency regularly held examination at hotels or villas and ascertained the condition of water reservoirs to be clean and free from virus. (san)

Executive Director, Dewi Rama, said although the hotel concept had been changed from traditional Balinese into a modern one, it would not leave the Balinese accent. “We let this remain unique by the use of reed roof. Each hotel room is equipped with open-plan living room, pool and garden with hotel facilities. We just make refurbishment to the exterior design,” she explained. The refurbishment, added Dewi Rama, was made to the exterior elements for refreshing the look. “Recently, we added to the lighting in the courtyard, near the pool and some of the hotel corners. Besides, we also added to the décor such as mirrors and paintings in the restaurant,” she said. In the future, she said, she would keep the quality of the 20 units of room owned that always accentuated the uniqueness, especially the environmental elements. “We will always improve the quality to maintain our guests that are mostly from Europe, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘Saturday Night Live’ comes to China’s Internet Associated Press Writer
BEIJING — A popular online video site is bringing the irreverent, topical humor of “Saturday Night Live” to China. The late-night U.S. comedy sketch show that regularly mocks politicians, popular culture and celebrities is being shown exclusively on the website of Sohu Video, a unit of Chinese online media group and Nasdaq-listed Sohu.com Inc. Ten episodes from the current 39th season of “SNL” are available now. Future episodes will be available online without subtitles the Monday after airing in the United States, and a version with Chinese subtitles and explanations of cultural references will be available at 10 p.m. the following Saturday, Sohu said in its announcement Thursday. The NBC network show has been a comedy proving ground since its inception with Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon and Will Ferrell among its cast over the years. Many of its original sketches and musical performances have been made into movies — including the 1992 hit “Wayne’s World” — or gone viral online. Topics have featured China, including a sketch of a press conference with then Chinese President Hu Jintao berating President Barack Obama over the national debt. But Sohu Chairman and CEO Charles Zhang said he didn’t expect the show’s edgy themes to get them into trouble in China. “Things that are controversial in America are probably not controversial
in China,” he said. “And this talk show is in the spirit of fun and humor. I don’t think there will be any problem.” Chinese films and TV shows are routinely censored to prevent criticism of leaders or socially sensitive content, including sexually suggestive humor, and “SNL” frequently tests those boundaries. NEW YORK — Juanita Moore, a groundbreaking actress and an Academy Award nominee for her role as Lana Turner’s black friend in the classic weeper “Imitation of Life,” has died. Actor Kirk Kelleykahn, her grandson, said that Moore collapsed and died Wednesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 99, according to Kelleykahn. Accounts of her age have differed over the years. Moore was only the fifth black performer to be nominated for an Oscar, receiving the nod for the glossy Douglas Sirk film that became a big hit and later gained a cult following. The 1959 tearjerker, based on a Fannie Hurst novel and a remake of a 1934 film, tells the story of a struggling white actress’ rise to stardom, her friendship with a black woman and how they team up to raise their daughters as single mothers. It brought supporting actress nominations for both Moore and Susan Kohner,
who played Moore’s daughter as a young adult attempting to pass as a white woman. Kohner’s own background is Czech and Mexican. By the end, Turner’s character is a star and her friend is essentially a servant. The death of Moore’s character sets up the sentimental ending. “The Oscar prestige was fine, but I worked more before I was nominated,” Moore told the Los Angeles Times in 1967. “Casting directors think an Oscar nominee is suddenly in another category. They couldn’t possibly ask you to do one or two days’ work. You wouldn’t accept it. And I’m sure I would.” Moore also had an active career in the theater, starting at Los Angeles’ Ebony Showcase Theatre in the early 1950s, a leading black-run theater.
