Indonesia tourism generates USD 8.5b of foreign exchanges Jakarta (Bali Post)â€”

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, claimed the number of foreign tourists visit to Indonesia during 2011 reached 7.6 million people, surpassing the target set at 7.1 million people. â€œThe tourist visit to Indonesia reached 7.6 million people exceeding the target of 7.1 million people. It showed an increase of 8.5 percent against last yearâ€™s achievement,â€? said Mari Pangestu in Jakarta on Sunday (Jan 1). She said the increase was higher than the growth of world tourism in 2011 by 4.5 percent. Based on that number, the foreign exchange earnings of tourism sector in 2011 were estimated to reach USD 8.5 billion, growing by 11.8 percent compared to achievement in 2010 amounting to USD 7.6 billion. She added that with such acquisition of foreign exchange the tourism sector became the fifth largest contributor to the national economy. â€œThe increase of foreign exchange earnings this year is in keeping with the increase in expenditure of foreign tourists from USD 1,085.75 in 2010 to USD1,118.26 per person per visit this year,â€? she said. The increase in tourism expenditures, she added, also occurred in domestic tourists. Her party

recorded the average expenditure of domestic tourists was IDR 641,760 and increased to IDR 662,680 per person per trip in 2011. â€œIn the third quarter of this year, the expenditure estimation of domestic tourists reaches IDR 114.64 trillion generated by 172.994 million trips compared to achievement in 2010 amounting to IDR 150.41 trillion,â€? she said. According to her, the achievement of 2011 should become a milestone to prepare ourselves in facing the challenging year of 2012. â€œDespite the bright prospect of tourism in 2012, we still have to anticipate the possibility of weakening global economy,â€? she said. Her party would cooperate with all the stakeholders so the target could be achieved in 2012. With the target of eight million

foreign tourist visits to Indonesia in 2012, her party expected to generate USD 8.96 billion of foreign exchange, while the target of domestic tourists was 171.5 billion. She was optimistic if the target could be achieved because the tourism sector was considered relatively resistant to crisis. â€œDuring the global economic crisis in 2009, our tourism sector continued to grow despite small. This shows tourism is resilient to crises and can be a seat belt for the national economy,â€? she added. At the end of 2010, her party had set three targets for foreign tourists visit in 2011, namely the pessimistic target by 7.2 million tourists, moderate target by 7.5 million tourists and optimistic target by 7.7 million tourists. The geo-strategic position of Mangupura as the capital of Badung is predicted to become a magnet of new economic growth and population concentration, although currently the â€˜faceâ€™ of Mangupura City is not visible. On that account, Mangupura should be carefully prepared from the beginning so as not to develop sporadically and partially as happened to other cities. Regent of Badung, AA Gde Agung, said the burden and function of Mangupura City were serving as the capital of Sarbagita urban areas as well as the national strategic area as set forth in the Presidential Regulation No. 45/2011 concerning with Urban Spatial Plan of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan (Sarbagita). Upon approval of the Ministry of Public Works, Mangupura City also served as the regency civic center, regional health center, re-

gional land transport node, center for small and medium industries (SMI), central infrastructure of sport, and center for cultural heritage preservation. Therefore, Gde Agung stated the planning documents, legal instrument, policy and direction of Mangupura City development should be prepared carefully and adaptive to the strategic roles in terms of the provincial, regional and national interests by putting forward the principles of sustainable development. Sustainable development principles should be applied starting from the arrangement of roads, drainage, sidewalks, parks and basic residential facilities and infrastructure. It had good sanitation and tranquil waves so it was comfortable for the children to bathe.Additionally, it also offered dolphin attractions easily found with a small boat ride. This advantage could not be encountered on the beaches in other regions. On that account, he and the family were never absent to visit Lovina for recreation. â€œI have come here for four times for recreational bathing or seeing dolphin attractions. Since I have often visited the famous Kuta Beach and other beaches in Bali, I deliberately come here with family to seek a new atmosphere,â€? he said. JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened the ﬁrst trade in 2012 at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) here, Monday. “I officially declare the first trade in 2012 opens at the Indonesian Stock Exchange,” said the president. The trade opening ceremony was marked by the president`s pressing a touch screen followed by the sounding of sirens marking the opening of the ﬁrst stock trade in 2012. The president in his remarks sent his congratulation and best regards to every IDX staff member who had worked hard all this time.

Besides the IDX staff, the president also thanked all stock market regulators and market participants. “Thanks to every economic participants, along with the government we have built a well performed country`s economy,” said the president. On the occasion, the president also opened and signed an epigraph for the IDX gallery opening, followed by sightseeing the gallery. Several United Indonesia II cabinet ministers were also accompanying the national leader in the ceremony, including Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Rajasa and Finance Minister Agus Martowardojo.

SAMPANG - Sampang police have named three people as the main suspects over last Thursday`s (Dec 29) torching of a number of Shiite community buildings, and arrested one of them. “The name of the suspect we have been able to arrest is Musrikan, We took him in last night,” Senior Commissioner Rahmat Mulyana, public relations officer of the East Java Police Headquarters, told the press at the Sampang district police office here Saturday. A Sunni crowd on Thursday rampaged through Sampang district`s Karang Gayam village and set fire to the house of the Shiite community leader, a Shiite prayer house and school building. The two other main suspects - Muhlis and

Sawir, were still at large and had been put on the police`s list of wanted persons, Rahmat said. The police determined the suspects after conducting an investigation into the incident and questioning 15 out of 21 people they had planned to interview. “The suspects, if proven quilty, face a maximum jail sentence of ﬁve years under articles 170 and 178 of the Criminal Code,” Rahmat said. The mob action in Karang Gayam village forced 270 out of the 351 Shiite residents of the village to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere. They were eventually given shelter at the Wijata Kusuma sports stadium located near the Sampang district chief`s ofﬁce. Relations between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in Sampang have been marked by mutual intolerance since 2006 and last Thursday`s riot was triggered by a proselytizing dispute.

The strike ended on December 14 with a deal under which Freeport agreed to a pay increase of roughly 40 percent for around 8,000 union members and to a framework for a better deal for roughly 15,000 other non-union workers and contractors. Arizona-based Freeport earlier said it expected full operations at the Grasberg mine to resume in early 2012.

The union has not returned to work largely because of a dispute with contractor PT Kuala Pelabuhan Indonesia (KPI) over possible sanctions on workers who took part in the strike. Last week KPI agreed to rehire about 700 workers who went on strike with no sanctions, the union said. Monday’s dispute appeared to be similar to the union’s with KPI.

Jamilah repatriated to Indonesia after being pardoned Antara

JIDDA - Jamilah binti Abidin Rofiì who was to be sentenced to death for murder had been repatriated to Indonesia on Dec. 28, 2011, after obtaining a pardon from the victim`s family, the Indonesian Embassy here said. The embassy in its press statement received by Antaranews here on Sunday said that Jamilah was sentenced to death by the Saudi authorities after she murdered her employer, Salim Al-Ruqi, in 2007. Jamilah who hailed from Cianjur, West Java, worked as an illegal domestic helper with a family of Salim Al Ruqi in Mecca after she left her first employer.

She was detained by the Saudi authorities on charges of murdering her employer, found guilty and sentenced to death by the Mecca high court on March 19, 2009 which was upheld by the Supreme Court of the Saudi Kingdom. After several endeavors by the Indonesian consulate general in Jidda, the victim`s family gave Jamilah a pardon in May 2011. With the pardon, Jamilah was freed from the threat of execution. After completing all the requirements and processes in accordance with the regulations in force in the Saudi Kingdom, Jamilah was then moved from a Mecca jail to a Jidda prison, where preparations were made for her deportation.

Overview: There are a couple of variations on this popular cake, which can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. It is normally served at room temperature, but can also be served warm topped with coconut milk. Another variations are to add ripe diced jackfruits (or substitute with sultanas) after the rice is partially cooked. Ingredients: 1 cup glutinous white rice 1 cup water 1 pandan leaf ½ cup palm sugar syrup ¼ cup thick coconut milk Pinch of salt Preparation: Rinse rice very well under running water for 2 minutes and soak for 4 hours. Rinse again until water becomes clear. Place rice, 1 cup of water and pandan leaf in rice cooker or steamer and cook for approx 20 minutes, or until liquid has evaporated. Add palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and salt, and steam for 15 minutes. Spread rice evenly 2.5 cm thick on tray and allow to cool to room temperature. Wet a sharp knife with warm and cut into even squares to serve. Helpful hint: to speed up the soaking process, pour boiling water over the rice and let stand for 1 hour. Drain, then add another lot of boiling water and soak for another 30 minutes. The delicate flavors of the shrimp and fish are greatly improved if you can find spears of fresh lemongrass to use as skewers, and if you can cook them over a fire of coconut husks rather than charcoal. Nonetheless, even with wooden skewers and a standard charcoal grill, you will have people coming back more. Ingredients: 600 gr skinned boneless snapper fillet 1 cup freshly grated coconut or 1½ cups moistened desiccated coconut ½ cup seafood spice paste 5 fragrant lime leaves, chopped 1 tsp black peppercorns, finely crushed 1 tsp salt 3-5 bird’s eye chilies, very finely chopped 2 tbsp palm sugar Lemon grass or satay skewers Preparation: 1. Mince fish fillet very finely in a food processor or with a chopper. 2. Add all other ingredients & mix well. 3. Mould a heaped tablespoon full of this mixture around a wooden skewer or over trimmed stalks of lemon grass and grill over charcoal until golden brown. Note: This recipe won’t work with frozen fish. Cruise’s ‘Mission’ stays on top with $31.3 million Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — Tom Cruise’s new mission remains impossible to beat at the box office. Studio estimates Sunday placed “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” in the No. 1 spot for the second-straight weekend with $31.3 million. With a $134.1 million domestic total, it’s the first $100 million hit with Cruise in the lead role since 2006’s “Mission: Impossible III.” The Paramount release led a solid New Year’s weekend as Hollywood managed fair business to end a sluggish year on a more promising note for 2012. NEW YORK — Hugh Jackman has left Broadway with a lot of broken hearts — and records. The hunky Australian actor’s one-man Broadway concert show closed on Sunday afternoon at the Broadhurst Theatre after having earned $2,057,354 in its ﬁnal week, the highest weekly gross recorded by the Shubert Organization, which owns the Broadhurst and 16 other Broadway theaters. Over its 10-week run, Jackman earned a whopping $14,638,428, producers said. He now owns 10 of the 11 top grossing weeks at the Broadhurst. Jackman, best known for being the hairy Wolverine in “The X-Men” franchise, routinely sold out the 1,176-seat theater and usually posted weekly grosses of $1.5 million, often higher than rival musicals such as “Jersey Boys,” ‘’Mama Mia!” ‘’How to Succeed in Business,” ‘’Anything Goes” and “Follies.”

Only “Wicked” and “The Lion King,” produced by other organizations, consistently outdid Jackman. But those shows also had much higher overhead costs. The previous record at the Broadhurst was held by the Al Pacino-led “The Merchant of Venice,” which took in $1,175,750 earlier this year. Attention should be paid to this drop off, experts say, because those inactive in youth tend to remain inactive over their lifetime. “The transition from late adolescence to early adulthood represents the most dramatic declines in physical activity across a person’s life,” according to Dr. Matthew Kwan, a researcher at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Kwan said campaigns tend to focus on increasing activity in adults. “That’s important, but it’s when declines have already occurred,” he said. “This is a critical period where we can actually intervene.”

In a recent study that followed 683 Canadian adolescents from 12 to 15 years old for 12 years, researchers headed by Kwan found a 24 percent decrease in physical activity from adolescence to early adulthood. The research, which appeared in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, showed declines were steepest among young men entering university or college. Kwan said it might be a consequence of the big drop off in organized sports activity after high school. “Team sports, varsity activities tend to decrease or drop off entirely,” he explained. “For those who go to college, studies become more important. Then there’s the social aspect that eats up their disposable time as well.” Women, already less active in high school, showed only a modest decline in physical activity. “It may be that girls experience the greatest declines earlier in adolescence,” Kwan said.
