‘Fast & Furious’ star Paul Walker dies in crash Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — A fiery car crash north of Los Angeles has killed 40-year-old Paul Walker, the star of the “Fast & Furious” movie series, and one other person in the vehicle. Deputies found a Porsche Carrera GT engulfed in flames when they responded to a report of a collision Saturday afternoon in the community of Valencia, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Two people who were found in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. Walker’s publicist Ame Van Iden confirmed the actor’s death. A statement on Walker’s Facebook page said he was a passenger in a friend’s car, and that Walker was in the area to attend a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. The Sheriff’s Department said that speed was a factor in the crash. The Santa Clarita Valley Signal reported that the Porsche crashed into a light pole and tree and burst into flames. The fundraiser, to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan, took place at a nearby racecar shop. Attendees rushed to put out the flames with fire extinguishers to no avail. “All of us at Universal are heartbroken,” Universal Pictures, which has released the “Fast & Furious” franchise, said in a statement. “Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the ‘Fast and Furious’ films, and to countless fans.” His “Fast & Furious” co-star Vin Diesel posted a photograph of him and Walker arm-in-arm on Instagram with the message: “Brother I will miss you very much. I am absolutely speechless.” Walker rode the “Fast & Furious” fran-
chise to stardom, starring in all but one of the six action blockbusters, beginning with the first film in 2001. The blond-haired, blueeyed Los Angeles-native brought California surfer good-looks and an easy, warm charm to the popular street-racing series. The son of a fashion model and a sewer contractor, Walker grew up in a working class, Mormon household in Glendale, California. The oldest of five siblings, Walker’s mother began taking him to auditions as a toddler. He was a child model beginning at the age of 2. Walker has said the early induction to show business wasn’t to start him on a career path, but as a way to help provide for the family. After a string of TV roles as a child in the ‘80s, including small roles on “Who’s the Boss” and “Charles in Charge,” Walker made his feature film debut in the 1998 comedy “Meet the Deedles.” Supporting roles in the films “Pleasantville,” ‘’Varsity Blues” and “Flags of Our Fathers” followed. His performance in the 2000 thriller “The Skulls” caught the eye of producer Neal H. Moritz, who cast him in “The Fast and the Furious” as undercover police officer Brian O’Conner. Walker starred in other films, including the crime thriller “Running Scared,” the Antarctic adventure “Eight Below” and the heist film “Takers.” Though his stardom didn’t make as much of an impact outside the “Fast & Furious” series, Walker continually drew praise from his co-stars and directors as a kind-hearted and eager collaborator. “Your humble spirit was felt from the start,” Ludacris, Walker’s “Fast & Furious” co-star, said on Twitter. “Wherever you blessed your presence you always left a mark, we were like brothers.” “Fast & Furious” proved unusually enduring. Released in May, “Fast & Furious 6” was the most lucrative of them all, grossing more than $788 million worldwide. The seventh installment began shooting in September, with a release planned for July. The film’s production was on break with more shooting to be done. Walker stars in the upcoming Hurricane Katrina drama “Hours,” which Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films is to release Dec. 13. He also stars in “Brick Mansions,” a remake of the French action film “District B13” in post-production that Relativity plans to release next year. “Paul was an incredibly talent artist, devoted philanthropist and friend,” Relativity President Tucker Tooley said in a statement. DENPASAR - Thousands of police officers are deployed to guard the World Trade Organization (WTO) conference, which will be held in Bali from Dec. 3 to 6. “All personnel of the Bali provincial police are on standby to guard the WTO meeting,” the head of the Bali provincial police’s operations bureau, Snr. Comr. I Gede Alit Widana, said after a roll call at Nusa Dua, Bali, on Sunday.
But he stopped short of revealing the number of police personnel. Police from West Java, Central Java and East Java provinces also sent their personnel to help guard the meeting, he said. “We also receive security as-
sistance from the National Police Headquarters,” he said. The personnel from the three provincial police and the National Police Headquarters would be tasked with escorting delegates, conducting intelligence activities, combating terrorism and safeguarding vital objects, he said. The 9th WTO ministerial conference would bring together about 10 thousand participants from 167 countries, including 20 observer
countries, he said. “We started the week-long security on December 1,” he said. Adj. Comr. Wayan Setiajaya, public relations chief of Jembrana police, said last Friday the Jembrana resort police have tightened security at the Gilimanuk sea port by adding 45 police officers in view of the WTO conference. Wayan added that the additional officers would focus on guarding the entrance gate of Bali, as well as the exit gate.
Police will also patrol the waters of the Bali Strait with the help of the Waters Police of Pengambengan village and in the Gilimanuk area. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the WTO meeting at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Tuesday (Dec 3). The conference will later discuss a wide range of issues including world trade mechanism. Indonesian Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan will chair the meeting.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Thanksgiving Day is eating into Black Friday shopping at U.S. retailers. U.S. shoppers spent $9.74 billion at stores on Black Friday, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. That’s a drop of 13.2 percent compared with the same day last year, according to preliminary data released on Saturday by research firm ShopperTrak. The decline appears to be because more Americans were shopping on the holiday itself: Combined spending on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, which had previously been considered the official start to the holiday buying season until this year, rose 2.3 percent to $12.3 billion. The data shows that Thanksgiving, which along with Christmas had been one of only two days that most stores are closed each year, is becoming an increasingly important shopping day for major retailers. Black Friday used to be the time when retailers would open early and offer deep discounts to draw shoppers into stores. But a few retailers started opening on the holiday in the past couple of years. And this year, at least a dozen did so, with a few opening earlier on the Thursday holiday than they did last year. The National Retail Federation predicted that 33 million, or almost a quarter, of the 140 million people who planned to shop during the four-day holiday weekend that ends on Sunday, would do so on Thanksgiving. And analysts had questioned whether the
holiday openings would steal sales away from Black Friday or result in people spending more overall. “Retailers were pretty successful in drawing the consumers into the stores on Thursday,” said ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin, whose company counts how many shoppers go into about 40,000 stores in the U.S. But “Thursday’s sales came at the expense of Black Friday’s numbers.” The decline in sales on Black Friday was the second one in a row. Last year, sales on Black Friday dropped 1.8 percent to $11.2 billion, though it still was the biggest shopping day last year, according to ShopperTrak. Despite the big drop in sales this year on Black Friday, Shoppertrak’s Martin said he thinks it will remain the biggest shopping day of the year for the 10th year in a row. But if retailers continue to promote Thanksgiving as the start of the holiday buying season, he thinks the holiday will eventually surpass Black Friday in sales. “We’re just taking Black Friday sales and spreading them across a larger number of days,” Martin said.

DENPASAR - The Indonesian tourist resort island of Bali will continue to be safe for visiting Australian tourists, despite strained relations between the two countries, a tourism operator has said. “The Australian government’s travel advisory issued for citizens visiting Indonesia is a normal thing,” Made Sudana, a tourism operator said. He said it was reasonable for all countries to warn their citizens doing business in or traveling to countries, with which they had strained relations. However, Australian tourists should find it convenient and safe to stay in Bali, owing to the fact that Bali’s residents are known to be friendly and respect their guests. Sudana expressed his conviction that strained relations between Indonesia and Australia would not affect Bali’s tourism in the near feature. The two countries have often experienced ups and downs in their relations, but Australians have continued to make tourism visits and indulge in business activities in Indonesia
as usual. He said it was understandable if it seemed that both countries needed relatively more time to normalize their relations. Sudana pointed out that up till now, many Australian tourists still considered Bali’s beaches as their favorite tourist destination. After all, Bali is geographically nearer and Australian tourists feel it is safe and convenient to visit the province, he added. Data from the Tourism Service of Bali showed that the number of foreign tourists visiting Bali during the January to October 2013 period had touched 2.6 million, or an increase of 12.19 percent from the same period last year. As substitute of heritage protection, BPPD Bali proposes tax equalization Bali Post
MANGUPURA - The Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) of Bali Chapter struggled for the tax balance. This proposal came after the rampant protests among the circles of tourism businesspeople related to the heritage protection. The program to be implemented in 2014 would oblige foreign travelers to pay USD 10 when spending holidays to Bali. “Who shall pay for the preservation of Balinese culture? Necessarily, we should do it. Probably, USD 10 is not great, but there should be balance between the rights and obligations. We tend the government to fight for the equalization of tax,” said Chairman of the Policy Maker Board of the BPPD Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati. According to him, the environmental damage including the cultural degradation was not merely the impact of Bali tourism, but the rapid growth of the industry. On that account, Bali deserved to get tax equalization. Moreover, the contribution of Bali was quite high. “What we can get all this time is unbalanced so that it resulted in damage. Meanwhile, the cultural preservation has been set forth in the Hotel and Restaurant Tax (PHR). Hence, it needs to get balance tax,” he said. Similar opinion was revealed by

How contemptible will be if our spiritual activity is financed by other people,” he said. He argued if the government would like to develop the cultural tourism, the ritual activities should be enlarged in addition to controlling the growth of tourism by limiting the tourist arrivals. “In other countries, like the tourist destination in India, the government restricts the tourist arrival and the development of accommodation. WASHINGTON — Christmas has come to the White House. Michelle Obama, daughters Malia and Sasha and the family’s two dogs on Friday accepted an 18-and-a-half-foot (5.6-meter) Douglas fir as the official White House Christmas tree. It was presented by Christopher Botek, a second-generation Christmas tree farmer from Crystal Spring Tree Farm in Pennsylvania. The tree was hauled up the driveway by horse-drawn wagon and taken to the Blue Room, where it will stand as the main attraction of the White House Christmas decorations. Mrs. Obama, holding the leash for dog Sunny, and her daughters walked around the wagon to inspect the fir. “It looks good. It looks beautiful,” she said, turning to ask Malia: “What do you think?” “Love it. We’ll keep it,” replied Malia, who held the leash for Bo, the family’s other dog. “We will keep it,” Mrs. Obama said. An army of volunteer decorators and White House staffers will participate in a weekend marathon of tree trimming, wreath hanging and other decorating to transform the building in time for a preview of the holiday decorations that’s set for next week. As in past years, many of the decorations will honor military families, who are getting a first look at the decorations on Wednesday.

As happened on Friday (Nov 29), the Buleleng Manpower and Resettlement Agency sent a total of 15 families to resettlement area at Tumbang Jutuh SP1, Kajuei village, Rungan subdistrict, Gunung Mas County, Central Kalimantan. A total of 15 families comprising 60 people originated in five subdistricts in Buleleng, namely Sawan (3 families), Sukasada (1 family), Buleleng (6 families), Gerokgak (4 families) and Tejakula (1 family). Interestingly, the participants of resettlement program from Buleleng carried a wide variety of grafts to be planted at the destination such as banana, mango and durian. They also carried farming tools and household appliances. Even, the bikes of their toddlers were also put into the truck to be taken to the destination area. The Head of Buleleng Manpower and Resettlement Agency, Ni Made Dwi Priyanti Putri Koriawan, accompanied by Division Head of Resettlement, Nyoman Susila, said the public interest in Buleleng to join in the resettlement program was still high. As evidence, during the period of 2012 to 2013, there were 51 families enrolling in the resettlement program. A total of 45 families underwent the administrative selection, written test and interview. “Of the 45 families, only 15 families were declared to pass and met the requirements of the resettlement program,” she said. Why are many people interested in joining the resettlement program? Dwi Priyanti revealed that one of the requirements for joining the program was that the residents did not have land at their home village. Even, there were residents who really did not have any land to be occupied. In addition, they did not have a permanent job and were mostly labors. “They are landless and jobless. Indeed, it is one of the requirements to be a participant of resettlement program,” she said. According to Dwi Priyanti, prior to departure the 15 families had been given a common basic training and training on the preparation of oblation and culture. When arriving at the resettlement area, they would get appropriate housing of type 36 square meters, courtyard area of 2.25 hectares being ready to be cultivated, farming land I (0.75 hectare) and farming area II (1 hectare) in unopened condition, minimum living guarantee for 12 months and legality of the land in the form of certificates for two hectares of land after cultivation for five years continuously. “In addition, they also get farming tools, and home appliances,” she added. Rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar eventually weakened and reached IDR 12,000 per dollar. Nevertheless, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Ramantha the economist from Udayana University had confidence the rupiah depreciation would likely have a positive impact on the economy of Bali. “In terms of the economic interests of Bali, the real impact of the rupiah depreciation to IDR 12,000 will be more favorable for the economy of Bali,” said Wayan Ramantha, in Denpasar, Friday (Nov 29). According to him, the economy of Bali, especially the tourism sector, was supported by the Trade, Hotels and Restaurants (PHR) mostly getting involved in dollar rate. Although a number of tourist accommodations still applied dollar currency, the skyrocketing dollar exchange rate
would affect the length of stay and expenditure of guests during their holidays in Bali. “With the surge in the dollar exchange rate, they (travelers—Ed) will consider it cheap to spend holiday in Bali, so that they stay longer. This condition is favorable for hotels and restaurants,” he said. In terms of trade, the rupiah depreciation was also assessed by Ramantha to be beneficial because most of these sectors worked on overseas markets. They included the exporters of handicraft, fish and garment products. “It can also enhance the competitiveness of products of Bali overseas. In other words, our export volume is expected to increase, so the economy of Bali as a whole will increase,” he explained. It was mentioned the national balance was then slightly worrying due to deficit balance of payment.
However, such condition did not happen in Bali although the positive level of balance payment in Bali was delicate. The rise in dollar price was estimated to be higher. “When examined as a whole, the price of US dollar reaching IDR 12,000 is much more favorable compared to the previous price when reaching IDR 11,000 per US dollar,” he said. Similar opinion was revealed by bankers in Bali that the increase in the price of dollar would not have a significant impact on the economy of Bali, particularly in the banking sector. “Indeed, it definitely has an impact, but not significant. We are still able to survive in the face of the rupiah depreciation that potentially triggers the increasing rate of Bank Indonesia,” said Director of PT Bank Sinar Harapan Bali, I GN Alit Asamara Jaya.
According to him, the lineups of banking that mostly experienced the impact on the weakening of rupiah were those running the business in the financing sector related to foreign exchange. Meanwhile, the banks that were only working on the sector were not truly affected by the shock of the rising price of dollar. “In general, it will indeed increase the rate of Bank Indonesia, in which it will have an impact on the cost of funds resulting in the cost of credit. However, it highly depends on each bank in responding to such problems,” he said. He said that Bank Sinar had not increased the interest rates following the increase in the rate of Bank Indonesia. Rupiah exchange rate moved in the range of IDR 11,858 – IDR 12,028 per USD. Meanwhile, the Yahoo Finance recorded the exchange rate of rupiah at IDR 11,995 per USD. Then, the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) of Bank Indonesia (BI) was closed in the range of IDR 11,930 per USD. The movement of the US dollar touched the highest level within six months against yen after there were signs of improvement in the world’s biggest economy and the increase in the attractiveness of US assets. BANGKOK — Police in Thailand fought off mobs of rock-throwing protesters armed with petrol bombs who tried to battle their way into the government’s sand-bagged headquarters Sunday, as gunshots rang out in Bangkok and the prime minister fled a police complex during the sharpest escalation yet of the country’s latest crisis. The protests, aimed at toppling Yingluck Shinawatra’s administration, have raised renewed fears of prolonged instability in one of Southeast Asia’s biggest economies. Sunday marked the first time police have used force since demonstrations began in earnest a week ago — a risky strategy that many fear could trigger more bloodshed. At least four people have been killed and 53 wounded in skirmishes so far, according to according to police and the state’s emergency medical services. Most of the casualties occurred at a Bangkok stadium where shooting was heard Sunday for the second day and the body of one protester shot in the chest lay face-up on the ground. Yingluck spent the morning in meetings at a Bangkok police complex but evacuated to an undisclosed location and canceled an interview with reporters after more than a hundred protesters attempted to break into the compound, according to her secretary, Wim Rungwattanajinda. Several demonstrators interviewed by The Associated Press, however, were unaware Yingluck
was inside. Those who made it a few steps into the vast complex stayed only a few minutes, and Wim said they did not get anywhere near the heavily protected building where Yingluck was located. The unrest forced Bangkok’s biggest and glitziest shopping malls to close in the heart of the city and snarled traffic. Mobs also besieged at least three television stations demanding they broadcast the protesters’ views and not the government’s. One of those TV stations is government run, the other is owned by the military and the third is independent. Political instability has plagued Thailand since the military ousted Yingluck’s brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, in a coup in 2006. Two years later, anti-Thaksin demonstrators occupied Bangkok’s two airports for a week after taking over the prime minister’s office for three months, and in 2010 pro-Thaksin protesters occupied downtown Bangkok for weeks in a standoff that ended with parts of the city in flames and more than 90 dead. Any further deterioration is likely to scare away investors as well as
tourists who come to Thailand by the millions and contribute 10 percent to the $602 billion economy, Southeast Asia’s second largest after Indonesia. It is also likely to undermine Thailand’s democracy, which had built up in fits and starts interrupted by coups. Thailand’s latest unrest began last month after an ill-advised bid by Yingluck’s ruling Pheu Thai party to push an amnesty law through Parliament that would have allowed the return of her self-exiled brother, who was overthrown after being accused of corruption and abuse of power. The bill failed to pass after the upper house of parliament voted against it. But the victory emboldened the protesters, who accuse Yingluck of being her brother’s puppet. The demonstrators, who mainly support the opposition Democrat Party, want to replace Yingluck’s elected government with an unelected “people’s council” but have been vague about what that means. Some of Sunday’s most dramatic scenes played out in front of Government House, where more than 1,000 protesters armed with petrol bombs and rocks skirmished with riot police who fired rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas over heavily fortified barricades. At one point, a truck pulled up and tied a green rope to a concrete barrier and tried to drag it away. A few kilometers (miles) away, police drove back another crowd of protesters at the Bangkok police bureau.

Tokyo - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Sunday he would discuss China’s expansion of its air defence zone with US Vice President Joe Biden in Tokyo to coordinate their stance after apparently contradictory responses. China raised regional tensions with its declaration last weekend of the zone, which covers islands in the East China Sea at the centre of a dispute between Beijing and Tokyo, and demands that aircraft submit flight plans when traversing the area. Tokyo has stopped Japanese airlines from submitting flight plans to Beijing but Washington said Friday it generally expected US carriers to “operate consistent with” notification policies issued by foreign countries. “We want to hold consultation with US Vice President Biden who will visit Japan this week and deal with the matter by coordinating closely between Japan and the United States,” Abe said. Biden is due to arrive in Tokyo late Monday for a 34-hour visit as part of his East Asian tour which will also take him to China and South Korea. The US State Department statement was widely taken in Japan to mean Washington had effectively advised US airlines to comply with the Chinese demand. But Abe and Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Washington had not explicitly requested US carriers to submit flight plans to
Beijing. “We have confirmed it through diplomatic channels,” Abe told reporters, according to Jiji Press news agency. Onodera, speaking on public broadcaster NHK, said: “The US government is taking the same stance with Japan” over the air defence zone. “The US side has rather been quicker than Japan in responding to this issue. It has issued a strong message,” the defence chief said. China’s announcement last weekend that it was extending an air defence identification zone (ADIZ) over the Tokyo-controlled Senkaku islands, claimed by Beijing as the Diaoyus, was disregarded by several nations, and US B-52 bombers entered the area. The Pentagon has indicated that American military forces would continue normal operations, despite China scrambling fighter jets to monitor US and Japanese aircraft in the zone. Jiji said Abe and Onodera were possibly trying to deny any damaging difference between the Pacific allies over the air zone issue. Onodera also cited press reports that China might “make similar moves in the South China Sea”, where Beijing is involved in territorial disputes with several neighbouring countries. “I think a sense of tension will run through countries within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),” he said. “The international community as a whole should not condone such unilateral approach.”

Foreign investors return to Spain
MADRID - A year after fleeing Spain as its economy tottered on the brink of a full-blown sovereign bailout, foreign investors are coming back. The prospect of relatively high returns in a eurozone economy emerging from recession with a strong corporate presence in Latin America is apparently proving irresistible. Among the latest converts, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates snapped up in September a 5.7percent stake in Spanish construction and services group FCC for 108 million euros ($147 million). News of the US billionaire’s decision sent FCC stock surging more than 10 percent in a single day and made headlines in the Spanish media. “Foreign investment is returning to Spain,” said state secretary for business Jaime Garcia Legaz as he presented a report last month on sovereign funds by the Spanish business school ESADE. “They are expecting a Spanish economic recovery,” he added. “It is clear that the perception of Spain has changed. It is improving week by week.” Spain would enjoy a surplus in its current account -- the broadest measure of trade including financial flows -- equal to two percent of its economic output at the end of this year, he forecast.
That would be a far cry from the 10-percent current account deficit Spain posted in the depth of the financial crisis, which erupted in 2008 after the collapse of a decade-long property bubble. Between January and August this year, foreigners ploughed nearly 19 billion euros in net direct investments into Spain, twice as much as they had in the same period a year earlier. The money is welcome in a country gingerly emerging from a two-year recession as it narrows its public deficit, boosts competitiveness and struggles with a jobless rate of 25.98 percent. “The Spanish market is regaining its attraction,” said France’s ambassador to Spain, Jerome Bonnafont, describing the change as “a turning point”. “There is a clear increase in spontaneous questions from French companies about Spain,” said Richard Gomes, local director of Ubifrance, an organisation that helps French firms to operate internationally. Sovereign funds are banking on Spain, too, showing particular interest in companies that have a strong presence in Latin America, according to the ESADE study. Among the most emblematic investments, Singaporean sovereign fund Temasek has ploughed money into Repsol, and Abu Dhabi’s IPIC is now the full owner of Spanish petroleum and gas group Cepsa.

But after years of WTO failure on the Doha Round, regional pacts with fewer members are in the ascendancy. Failure in Bali may relegate the WTO to the role of merely settling disputes between its members, observers say. KATMANDU, Nepal — A bus has veered off a mountain road in western Nepal, killing 11 people and injuring 34. According to government administrator Sagar Mani Parajuli, the bus went off the road and rolled for another 300 meters (990 feet).
Residents and police pulled out the bodies and the injured from the wreckage near Melkharka village on Sunday. The road is narrow with hairpin bents and the visibility was poor because of morning fog. Bus accidents in Nepal are generally blamed on poorly maintained roads and public vehicles.

JAKARTA - Nine people were killed after flooding and a landslide hit Indonesia’s Sumatra island, an official said on Sunday. “Heavy rains from Saturday evening till night triggered a landslide in the hilly area of Berastagi sub-district in North Sumatra,” National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. “Nine people were killed,” he said, including four children aged between two and 10. Local military official Meyer Putong, who was involved in rescue operations, said nobody was reported missing. “They lived close to the river so the rush of rain water last night broke the riverbanks. The victims were either buried under their houses or swept by the surging waters,” he added. Indonesia is regularly affected by deadly floods and landslides during its wet season, which lasts for around six months. Environmentalists blame logging and a failure to reforest denuded land for exacerbating flooding.

JAKARTA - A worker at a US-owned gold and copper mine in eastern Indonesia was killed instantly on Sunday when rocks fell from a machine, crushing him, police said. The 27-year-old production operator was driving a car into the loading area of Freeport-McMoRan’s huge Grasberg mine in Papua province when tragedy struck, local police chief Sudirman told AFP. “The worker was crushed to death after a machine used to load rocks onto trucks unleashed its contents onto him instead. He died on the spot,” Sudirman said. “This is an industrial accident and we are still investigating.” Another passenger in the car was injured but is in a stable condition, he added. In May, a training tunnel collapsed killing 28 miners as they took part in a safety training course in what was one of Indonesia’s worst mining accidents. The company suspended four senior employees who were accused by unions of being at fault after workers threatened to strike. Grasberg has also been plagued by production problems in recent years. In June, Freeport declared force majeure on shipments from the mine, saying it could not fulfil contractual obligations due to circumstances beyond its control. In 2011 a three-month strike crippled production at the mine, and workers only halted the industrial action once Freeport agreed to a huge pay rise. Freeport holds the world’s largest gold reserves in the restive province.

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Control Agency (BNPB) said Jakarta has taken precautionary measure to cope with floods hitting the capital city every end of a year. “We are ready with support. The Jakarta city BNPB will supervise all activities, but we will offer support in building dykes, training and anything else needed,” general secretary of BNPB Fatchul Hadi said after the launch of a joint exercise involving 1,000 police, military as well as the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) personnel to cope with possible flooding in South Jakarta on Sunday. Coordination in efforts has also been made with the Public Works Ministry, which has examined and repaired damaged dykes in Ciliwung, Bekasi and Depok, that have always sent flood waters to the city. In 2012, a dyke collapsed pouring big water to the city center including the Indonesian Hotel
traffic circle which had never been flooded before. Fatchul said 3,000 personnel have been made ready to face rain triggered flooding expected to reach its height this month or January, 2014. Head of the Data Center and Public Relations of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the agency has set aside Rp100 billion to cope with flooding, landslides and cold lava floods all over the country. “If that is not enough we still have more fund to back up regional administration,” Sutopo said. BNPB has also prepared contingency plan and distributed maps of flood prone areas to all regions to be more ready with precautionary steps, he said. “We have also been ready with logistics provision such as foods, tents, rubber boats, etc,” he said. He said similar exercises have also been launched by BNPB in other flood-prone areas in the country. “In Bantul, for example, which was hit by quake and tsunami a few
years earlier, similar exercise was launched involving a personnel of 2,000 security officers and local people,” he said. In Jakarta, BNPN has coordinated plans with the Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who has issued a warning against floods. A special budget of Rp28 billion has been set aside for use from mid December and March next year to cope with floods in the city. Sutopo predicted despite efforts already taken by the city administration, Jakarta could not yet escape from experiencing the annual flooding. The Ciliwung river would overflow its banks which are still heavily populated, although the impact may not be as disastrous as in previous years, he said. In a bid to reduce flood disasters, Jakarta has built 2,000 water absorbing wells and repaired water pumps in various locations. There are around 61 locations in Jakarta that need to remain on the alert against the threat of flood.

West stripped of Moto2 results after doping test failure Former Kawasaki MotoGP rider Anthony West has had his Moto2 results from the past 18 months annulled following a court decision regarding a doping test failure in May 2012. West was originally given a one-month ban in October 2012 when the prohibited stimulant methylhexaneamine was found during a urine test on the French Grand Prix weekend five months earlier. Having served that ban, West returned to competition with his QMMF team for a full 2013 campaign. But the World Anti-Doping Agency took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing that a 24-month ban should have been imposed. A CAS panel hearing was held in Lausenne in August, where the WADA appeal was partially upheld. Motorcycle racing’s governing body the FIM has now announced that in accordance with the final CAS ruling delivered last week, West will be given an 18-month retroactive suspension, with one month deducted for what he has already served. “Taking into account the considerable delay in the conduct of the case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the CAS Panel decided to set the start of the suspension retroactively at 20 May 2012,” said an FIM statement. All West’s results from May 20 2012 to October 19 2013 have therefore been deleted from the Moto2 record books, including his podium finishes at Sepang and Phillip Island in 2012. West stripped of Moto2 results after doping test failure Former Kawasaki MotoGP rider Anthony West has had his Moto2 results from the past 18 months annulled following a court decision regarding a doping test failure in May 2012. West was originally given a one-month ban in October 2012 when the prohibited stimulant methylhexaneamine was found during a urine test on the French Grand Prix weekend five months earlier. Having served that ban, West returned to competition with his QMMF team for a full 2013 campaign. But the World Anti-Doping Agency took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing that a 24-month ban should have been imposed. A CAS panel hearing was held in Lausenne in August, where the WADA appeal was partially upheld. Motorcycle racing’s governing body the FIM has now announced that in accordance with the final CAS ruling delivered last week, West will be given an 18-month retroactive suspension, with one month deducted for what he has already served. “Taking into account the considerable delay in the conduct of the case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the CAS Panel decided to set the start of the suspension retroactively at 20 May 2012,” said an FIM statement. The 27-year-old production operator was driving a car into the loading area of Freeport-McMoRan’s huge Grasberg mine in Papua province when tragedy struck, local police chief Sudirman told AFP. “The worker was crushed to death after a machine used to load rocks onto trucks unleashed its contents onto him instead. He died on the spot,” Sudirman said. “This is an industrial accident and we are still investigating.” Another passenger in the car was injured but is in a stable condition, he added. In May, a training tunnel collapsed killing 28 miners as they took part in a safety training course in what was one of Indonesia’s worst mining accidents. The company suspended four senior employees who were accused by unions of being at fault after workers threatened to strike. Grasberg has also been plagued by production problems in recent years. In June, Freeport declared force majeure on shipments from the mine, saying it could not fulfil contractual obligations due to circumstances beyond its control. JAKARTA - The National Disaster Control Agency (BNPB) said Jakarta has taken precautionary measure to cope with floods hitting the capital city every end of a year. “We are ready with support. The Jakarta city BNPB will supervise all activities, but we will offer support in building dykes, training and anything else needed,” general secretary of BNPB Fatchul Hadi said after the launch of a joint exercise involving 1,000 police, military as well as the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) personnel to cope with possible flooding in South Jakarta on Sunday. Coordination in efforts has also been made with the Public Works Ministry, which has examined and repaired damaged dykes in Ciliwung, Bekasi and Depok, that have always sent flood waters to the city. In 2012, a dyke collapsed pouring big water to the city center including the Indonesian Hotel
traffic circle which had never been flooded before. Fatchul said 3,000 personnel have been made ready to face rain triggered flooding expected to reach its height this month or January, 2014. Head of the Data Center and Public Relations of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the agency has set aside Rp100 billion to cope with flooding, landslides and cold lava floods all over the country. “If that is not enough we still have more fund to back up regional administration,” Sutopo said. BNPB has also prepared contingency plan and distributed maps of flood prone areas to all regions to be more ready with precautionary steps, he said. “We have also been ready with logistics provision such as foods, tents, rubber boats, etc,” he said. He said similar exercises have also been launched by BNPB in other flood-prone areas in the country. “In Bantul, for example, which was hit by quake and tsunami a few
years earlier, similar exercise was launched involving a personnel of 2,000 security officers and local people,” he said. In Jakarta, BNPN has coordinated plans with the Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who has issued a warning against floods. A special budget of Rp28 billion has been set aside for use from mid December and March next year to cope with floods in the city. Sutopo predicted despite efforts already taken by the city administration, Jakarta could not yet escape from experiencing the annual flooding. The Ciliwung river would overflow its banks which are still heavily populated, although the impact may not be as disastrous as in previous years, he said. In a bid to reduce flood disasters, Jakarta has built 2,000 water absorbing wells and repaired water pumps in various locations. There are around 61 locations in Jakarta that need to remain on the alert against the threat of flood.

Foreign investors return to Spain
MADRID - A year after fleeing Spain as its economy tottered on the brink of a full-blown sovereign bailout, foreign investors are coming back. The prospect of relatively high returns in a eurozone economy emerging from recession with a strong corporate presence in Latin America is apparently proving irresistible. Among the latest converts, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates snapped up in September a 5.7percent stake in Spanish construction and services group FCC for 108 million euros ($147 million). News of the US billionaire’s decision sent FCC stock surging more than 10 percent in a single day and made headlines in the Spanish media. “Foreign investment is returning to Spain,” said state secretary for business Jaime Garcia Legaz as he presented a report last month on sovereign funds by the Spanish business school ESADE. “They are expecting a Spanish economic recovery,” he added. “It is clear that the perception of Spain has changed. It is improving week by week.” Spain would enjoy a surplus in its current account -- the broadest measure of trade including financial flows -- equal to two percent of its economic output at the end of this year, he forecast.
That would be a far cry from the 10-percent current account deficit Spain posted in the depth of the financial crisis, which erupted in 2008 after the collapse of a decade-long property bubble. Between January and August this year, foreigners ploughed nearly 19 billion euros in net direct investments into Spain, twice as much as they had in the same period a year earlier. The money is welcome in a country gingerly emerging from a two-year recession as it narrows its public deficit, boosts competitiveness and struggles with a jobless rate of 25.98 percent. “The Spanish market is regaining its attraction,” said France’s ambassador to Spain, Jerome Bonnafont, describing the change as “a turning point”. “There is a clear increase in spontaneous questions from French companies about Spain,” said Richard Gomes, local director of Ubifrance, an organisation that helps French firms to operate internationally. The Doha Round, launched in Qatar in 2001, aims for a wideranging accord to open markets and remove trade barriers, with a focus on helping poorer countries. Azevedo, Brazil’s former trade envoy who took the WTO helm in September, has cited some estimates saying it could provide a $1 trillion boost to global commerce. But the talks have stalled repeatedly as rich countries, emerging powers such as China and India, and the world’s poorest nations spar over the give and take needed to craft a deal. The World Trade Organization’s requirement that deals be unanimously agreed by all members also has complicated matters. Negotiators had long ruled out
major progress in Bali, instead working on lower-level thematic accords that could be fed into a wider package later. But despite an intense push by Azevedo and signs that diplomats were coming tantalisingly close on those accords, negotiations in Geneva stumbled last week over issues including food security and customs procedures. WTO diplomats engaged in last-ditch talks on Thursday however hailed a “breakthrough” on simplifying customs measures to facilitate trade, indicating that poor countries would be given extra flexibility to implement new rules under discussion. But other gaps remain, and analysts warn that a limited agreement
in Bali might do little to resuscitate Doha anyway. The WTO chief urged trade ministers to make a final push in Bali to get a deal “over the line” and has worked the phones in the run-up to the summit to try to bridge those gaps. But after years of WTO failure on the Doha Round, regional pacts with fewer members are in the ascendancy. Failure in Bali may relegate the WTO to the role of merely settling disputes between its members, observers say. Some such disputes could loom on the sidelines in Bali, including a bitter row between Russia and the European Union over car import duties imposed by Moscow.

NUSA DUA - Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Jero Wacik has appealed to ASEAN member countries to increase cooperation in mineral trade and investment under the principles of solidarity and mutual benefit. “ASEAN is endowed with huge mineral resources, which must be managed under the principles of solidarity for the benefit of the local people,” he said at the opening of the fourth ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Minerals at Nusa Dua, Bali, recently. He noted that mineral trade and investment activities in ASEAN member states were substantial because of the wide variety of minerals available in the region. ASEAN member countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Vietnam are endowed with large nickel, bauxite, iron ore and gold deposits, he added. Therefore, ASEAN member states have taken the right step in creating a mineral and metal database to serve as reference for regulating the investment, production and trade of the industry, he said. The mineral and metal industry must always consider four aspects: supporting economic growth, creating more jobs, alleviating poverty and adopting environmentally friendly technology, he noted. “ASEAN member countries can compete with one another to attract investment in the mineral sector, but they must also show ASEAN solidarity,” he added. The meeting will discuss a number of proposals agreed upon at the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Minerals plus 3 held on Tuesday and Wednesday. The proposals include the desire to incorporate trade, investment and technology aspects in the ASEAN mineral database. In line with the blueprint for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), ASEAN cooperation in the mineral sector is aimed at increasing trade and investment in support of sustainable development of the industry. As happened on Friday (Nov 29), the Buleleng Manpower and Resettlement Agency sent a total of 15 families to resettlement area at Tumbang Jutuh SP1, Kajuei village, Rungan subdistrict, Gunung Mas County, Central Kalimantan. A total of 15 families comprising 60 people originated in five subdistricts in Buleleng, namely Sawan (3 families), Sukasada (1 family), Buleleng (6 families), Gerokgak (4 families) and Tejakula (1 family). Interestingly, the participants of resettlement program from Buleleng carried a wide variety of grafts to be planted at the destination such as banana, mango and durian. They also carried farming tools and household appliances. Even, the bikes of their toddlers were also put into the truck to be taken to the destination area. The Head of Buleleng Manpower and Resettlement Agency, Ni Made Dwi Priyanti Putri Koriawan, accompanied by Division Head of Resettlement, Nyoman Susila, said the public interest in Buleleng to join in the resettlement program was still high. As evidence, during the period of 2012 to 2013, there were 51 families enrolling in the resettlement program. A total of 45 families underwent the administrative selection, written test and interview. “Of the 45 families, only 15 families were declared to pass and met the requirements of the resettlement program,” she said. Why are many people interested in joining the resettlement program? Dwi Priyanti revealed that one of the requirements for joining the program was that the residents did not have land at their home village. Even, there were residents who really did not have any land to be occupied. In addition, they did not have a permanent job and were mostly labors. “They are landless and jobless. Indeed, it is one of the requirements to be a participant of resettlement program,” she said. According to Dwi Priyanti, prior to departure the 15 families had been given a common basic training and training on the preparation of oblation and culture. When arriving at the resettlement area, they would get appropriate housing of type 36 square meters, courtyard area of 2.25 hectares being ready to be cultivated, farming land I (0.75 hectare) and farming area II (1 hectare) in unopened condition, minimum living guarantee for 12 months and legality of the land in the form of certificates for two hectares of land after cultivation for five years continuously. “In addition, they also get farming tools, and home appliances,” she added. Bali benefited by depreciation of rupiah

Rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar eventually weakened and reached IDR 12,000 per dollar. Nevertheless, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Ramantha the economist from Udayana University had confidence the rupiah depreciation would likely have a positive impact on the economy of Bali. “In terms of the economic interests of Bali, the real impact of the rupiah depreciation to IDR 12,000 will be more favorable for the economy of Bali,” said Wayan Ramantha, in Denpasar, Friday (Nov 29). According to him, the economy of Bali, especially the tourism sector, was supported by the Trade, Hotels and Restaurants (PHR) mostly getting involved in dollar rate. Although a number of tourist accommodations still applied dollar currency, the skyrocketing dollar exchange rate
would affect the length of stay and expenditure of guests during their holidays in Bali. “With the surge in the dollar exchange rate, they (travelers—Ed) will consider it cheap to spend holiday in Bali, so that they stay longer. This condition is favorable for hotels and restaurants,” he said. In terms of trade, the rupiah depreciation was also assessed by Ramantha to be beneficial because most of these sectors worked on overseas markets. They included the exporters of handicraft, fish and garment products. “It can also enhance the competitiveness of products of Bali overseas. In other words, our export volume is expected to increase, so the economy of Bali as a whole will increase,” he explained. It was mentioned the national balance was then slightly worrying due to deficit balance of payment.
However, such condition did not happen in Bali although the positive level of balance payment in Bali was delicate. The rise in dollar price was estimated to be higher. “When examined as a whole, the price of US dollar reaching IDR 12,000 is much more favorable compared to the previous price when reaching IDR 11,000 per US dollar,” he said. Similar opinion was revealed by bankers in Bali that the increase in the price of dollar would not have a significant impact on the economy of Bali, particularly in the banking sector. “Indeed, it definitely has an impact, but not significant. We are still able to survive in the face of the rupiah depreciation that potentially triggers the increasing rate of Bank Indonesia,” said Director of PT Bank Sinar Harapan Bali, I GN Alit Asamara Jaya.
According to him, the lineups of banking that mostly experienced the impact on the weakening of rupiah were those running the business in the financing sector related to foreign exchange. Meanwhile, the banks that were only working on the sector were not truly affected by the shock of the rising price of dollar. “In general, it will indeed increase the rate of Bank Indonesia, in which it will have an impact on the cost of funds resulting in the cost of credit. However, it highly depends on each bank in responding to such problems,” he said. He said that Bank Sinar had not increased the interest rates following the increase in the rate of Bank Indonesia. It happened because his party was still able to cope with the impact of the increasing rate of Bank Indonesia. “We remain consistent to follow the increasing rate of Bank Indone-
sia because we are still able to handle the BI rate increase, particularly in the interest of loan,” he said. As reported previously, rupiah in the non-delivery forward (NDF) trading was closed down at 132 points or 1.1 percent at IDR 12,018 per USD. Rupiah exchange rate moved in the range of IDR 11,858 – IDR 12,028 per USD. Meanwhile, the Yahoo Finance recorded the exchange rate of rupiah at IDR 11,995 per USD. Then, the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) of Bank Indonesia (BI) was closed in the range of IDR 11,930 per USD. The movement of the US dollar touched the highest level within six months against yen after there were signs of improvement in the world’s biggest economy and the increase in the attractiveness of US assets. BANGKOK — Police in Thailand fought off mobs of rock-throwing protesters armed with petrol bombs who tried to battle their way into the government’s sand-bagged headquarters Sunday, as gunshots rang out in Bangkok and the prime minister fled a police complex during the sharpest escalation yet of the country’s latest crisis. The protests, aimed at toppling Yingluck Shinawatra’s administration, have raised renewed fears of prolonged instability in one of Southeast Asia’s biggest economies. Sunday marked the first time police have used force since demonstrations began in earnest a week ago — a risky strategy that many fear could trigger more bloodshed. At least four people have been killed and 53 wounded in skirmishes so far, according to according to police and the state’s emergency medical services. Most of the casualties occurred at a Bangkok stadium where shooting was heard Sunday for the second day and the body of one protester shot in the chest lay face-up on the ground. Yingluck spent the morning in meetings at a Bangkok police complex but evacuated to an undisclosed location and canceled an interview with reporters after more than a hundred protesters attempted to break into the compound, according to her secretary, Wim Rungwattanajinda. Several demonstrators interviewed by The Associated Press, however, were unaware Yingluck
was inside. Those who made it a few steps into the vast complex stayed only a few minutes, and Wim said they did not get anywhere near the heavily protected building where Yingluck was located. The unrest forced Bangkok’s biggest and glitziest shopping malls to close in the heart of the city and snarled traffic. Mobs also besieged at least three television stations demanding they broadcast the protesters’ views and not the government’s. One of those TV stations is government run, the other is owned by the military and the third is independent. Political instability has plagued Thailand since the military ousted Yingluck’s brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, in a coup in 2006. Two years later, anti-Thaksin demonstrators occupied Bangkok’s two airports for a week after taking over the prime minister’s office for three months, and in 2010 pro-Thaksin protesters occupied downtown Bangkok for weeks in a standoff that ended with parts of the city in flames and more than 90 dead. Any further deterioration is likely to scare away investors as well as
tourists who come to Thailand by the millions and contribute 10 percent to the $602 billion economy, Southeast Asia’s second largest after Indonesia. It is also likely to undermine Thailand’s democracy, which had built up in fits and starts interrupted by coups. Thailand’s latest unrest began last month after an ill-advised bid by Yingluck’s ruling Pheu Thai party to push an amnesty law through Parliament that would have allowed the return of her self-exiled brother, who was overthrown after being accused of corruption and abuse of power. The bill failed to pass after the upper house of parliament voted against it. But the victory emboldened the protesters, who accuse Yingluck of being her brother’s puppet. The demonstrators, who mainly support the opposition Democrat Party, want to replace Yingluck’s elected government with an unelected “people’s council” but have been vague about what that means. Some of Sunday’s most dramatic scenes played out in front of Government House, where more than 1,000 protesters armed with petrol bombs and rocks skirmished with riot police who fired rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas over heavily fortified barricades. At one point, a truck pulled up and tied a green rope to a concrete barrier and tried to drag it away. A few kilometers (miles) away, police drove back another crowd of protesters at the Bangkok police bureau.

Tokyo - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Sunday he would discuss China’s expansion of its air defence zone with US Vice President Joe Biden in Tokyo to coordinate their stance after apparently contradictory responses. China raised regional tensions with its declaration last weekend of the zone, which covers islands in the East China Sea at the centre of a dispute between Beijing and Tokyo, and demands that aircraft submit flight plans when traversing the area. Tokyo has stopped Japanese airlines from submitting flight plans to Beijing but Washington said Friday it generally expected US carriers to “operate consistent with” notification policies issued by foreign countries. “We want to hold consultation with US Vice President Biden who will visit Japan this week and deal with the matter by coordinating closely between Japan and the United States,” Abe said. Biden is due to arrive in Tokyo late Monday for a 34-hour visit as part of his East Asian tour which will also take him to China and South Korea. The US State Department statement was widely taken in Japan to mean Washington had effectively advised US airlines to comply with the Chinese demand. But Abe and Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Washington had not explicitly requested US carriers to submit flight plans to
Beijing. “We have confirmed it through diplomatic channels,” Abe told reporters, according to Jiji Press news agency. Onodera, speaking on public broadcaster NHK, said: “The US government is taking the same stance with Japan” over the air defence zone. “The US side has rather been quicker than Japan in responding to this issue. It has issued a strong message,” the defence chief said. China’s announcement last weekend that it was extending an air defence identification zone (ADIZ) over the Tokyo-controlled Senkaku islands, claimed by Beijing as the Diaoyus, was disregarded by several nations, and US B-52 bombers entered the area. The Pentagon has indicated that American military forces would continue normal operations, despite China scrambling fighter jets to monitor US and Japanese aircraft in the zone. Jiji said Abe and Onodera were possibly trying to deny any damaging difference between the Pacific allies over the air zone issue. Onodera also cited press reports that China might “make similar moves in the South China Sea”, where Beijing is involved in territorial disputes with several neighbouring countries. “I think a sense of tension will run through countries within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),” he said. “The international community as a whole should not condone such unilateral approach.”

Thanksgiving Day is eating into Black Friday shopping at U.S. retailers. U.S. shoppers spent $9.74 billion at stores on Black Friday, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. That’s a drop of 13.2 percent compared with the same day last year, according to preliminary data released on Saturday by research firm ShopperTrak. The decline appears to be because more Americans were shopping on the holiday itself: Combined spending on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, which had previously been considered the official start to the holiday buying season until this year, rose 2.3 percent to $12.3 billion. The data shows that Thanksgiving, which along with Christmas had been one of only two days that most stores are closed each year, is becoming an increasingly important shopping day for major retailers. Black Friday used to be the time when retailers would open early and offer deep discounts to draw shoppers into stores. But a few retailers started opening on the holiday in the past couple of years. And this year, at least a dozen did so, with a few opening earlier on the Thursday holiday than they did last year. The National Retail Federation predicted that 33 million, or almost a quarter, of the 140 million people who planned to shop during the four-day holiday weekend that ends on Sunday, would do so on Thanksgiving. And analysts had questioned whether the
holiday openings would steal sales away from Black Friday or result in people spending more overall. “Retailers were pretty successful in drawing the consumers into the stores on Thursday,” said ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin, whose company counts how many shoppers go into about 40,000 stores in the U.S. But “Thursday’s sales came at the expense of Black Friday’s numbers.” The decline in sales on Black Friday was the second one in a row. Last year, sales on Black Friday dropped 1.8 percent to $11.2 billion, though it still was the biggest shopping day last year, according to ShopperTrak. Despite the big drop in sales this year on Black Friday, Shoppertrak’s Martin said he thinks it will remain the biggest shopping day of the year for the 10th year in a row. But if retailers continue to promote Thanksgiving as the start of the holiday buying season, he thinks the holiday will eventually surpass Black Friday in sales. “We’re just taking Black Friday sales and spreading them across a larger number of days,” Martin said.

DENPASAR - The Indonesian tourist resort island of Bali will continue to be safe for visiting Australian tourists, despite strained relations between the two countries, a tourism operator has said. “The Australian government’s travel advisory issued for citizens visiting Indonesia is a normal thing,” Made Sudana, a tourism operator said. He said it was reasonable for all countries to warn their citizens doing business in or traveling to countries, with which they had strained relations. However, Australian tourists should find it convenient and safe to stay in Bali, owing to the fact that Bali’s residents are known to be friendly and respect their guests. Sudana expressed his conviction that strained relations between Indonesia and Australia would not affect Bali’s tourism in the near feature. The two countries have often experienced ups and downs in their relations, but Australians have continued to make tourism visits and indulge in business activities in Indonesia
as usual. He said it was understandable if it seemed that both countries needed relatively more time to normalize their relations. Sudana pointed out that up till now, many Australian tourists still considered Bali’s beaches as their favorite tourist destination. After all, Bali is geographically nearer and Australian tourists feel it is safe and convenient to visit the province, he added. Data from the Tourism Service of Bali showed that the number of foreign tourists visiting Bali during the January to October 2013 period had touched 2.6 million, or an increase of 12.19 percent from the same period last year. As substitute of heritage protection, BPPD Bali proposes tax equalization Bali Post
MANGUPURA - The Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) of Bali Chapter struggled for the tax balance. This proposal came after the rampant protests among the circles of tourism businesspeople related to the heritage protection. The program to be implemented in 2014 would oblige foreign travelers to pay USD 10 when spending holidays to Bali. “Who shall pay for the preservation of Balinese culture? Necessarily, we should do it. Probably, USD 10 is not great, but there should be balance between the rights and obligations. We tend the government to fight for the equalization of tax,” said Chairman of the Policy Maker Board of the BPPD Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati. According to him, the environmental damage including the cultural degradation was not merely the impact of Bali tourism, but the rapid growth of the industry. On that account, Bali deserved to get tax equalization. Moreover, the contribution of Bali was quite high. “What we can get all this time is unbalanced so that it resulted in damage. Meanwhile, the cultural preservation has been set forth in the Hotel and Restaurant Tax (PHR). Hence, it needs to get balance tax,” he said. Similar opinion was revealed by

Michelle Obama, daughters Malia and Sasha and the family’s two dogs on Friday accepted an 18-and-a-half-foot (5.6-meter) Douglas fir as the official White House Christmas tree. It was presented by Christopher Botek, a second-generation Christmas tree farmer from Crystal Spring Tree Farm in Pennsylvania. The tree was hauled up the driveway by horse-drawn wagon and taken to the Blue Room, where it will stand as the main attraction of the White House Christmas decorations. Mrs. Obama, holding the leash for dog Sunny, and her daughters walked around the wagon to inspect the fir. “It looks good. It looks beautiful,” she said, turning to ask Malia: “What do you think?” “Love it. We’ll keep it,” replied Malia, who held the leash for Bo, the family’s other dog. “We will keep it,” Mrs. Obama said. An army of volunteer decorators and White House staffers will participate in a weekend marathon of tree trimming, wreath hanging and other decorating to transform the building in time for a preview of the holiday decorations that’s set for next week. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘Fast & Furious’ star Paul Walker dies in crash Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — A fiery car crash north of Los Angeles has killed 40-year-old Paul Walker, the star of the “Fast & Furious” movie series, and one other person in the vehicle. Deputies found a Porsche Carrera GT engulfed in flames when they responded to a report of a collision Saturday afternoon in the community of Valencia, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Two people who were found in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. Walker’s publicist Ame Van Iden confirmed the actor’s death. A statement on Walker’s Facebook page said he was a passenger in a friend’s car, and that Walker was in the area to attend a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. The Sheriff’s Department said that speed was a factor in the crash. The Santa Clarita Valley Signal reported that the Porsche crashed into a light pole and tree and burst into flames. The fundraiser, to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan, took place at a nearby racecar shop. Attendees rushed to put out the flames with fire extinguishers to no avail. “All of us at Universal are heartbroken,” Universal Pictures, which has released the “Fast & Furious” franchise, said in a statement. “Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the ‘Fast and Furious’ films, and to countless fans.” His “Fast & Furious” co-star Vin Diesel posted a photograph of him and Walker arm-in-arm on Instagram with the message: “Brother I will miss you very much. I am absolutely speechless.” Walker rode the “Fast & Furious” fran-
chise to stardom, starring in all but one of the six action blockbusters, beginning with the first film in 2001. The blond-haired, blueeyed Los Angeles-native brought California surfer good-looks and an easy, warm charm to the popular street-racing series. The son of a fashion model and a sewer contractor, Walker grew up in a working class, Mormon household in Glendale, California. The oldest of five siblings, Walker’s mother began taking him to auditions as a toddler. He was a child model beginning at the age of 2. Walker has said the early induction to show business wasn’t to start him on a career path, but as a way to help provide for the family. After a string of TV roles as a child in the ‘80s, including small roles on “Who’s the Boss” and “Charles in Charge,” Walker made his feature film debut in the 1998 comedy “Meet the Deedles.” Supporting roles in the films “Pleasantville,” ‘’Varsity Blues” and “Flags of Our Fathers” followed. His performance in the 2000 thriller “The Skulls” caught the eye of producer Neal H. Moritz, who cast him in “The Fast and the Furious” as undercover police officer Brian O’Conner. Released in May, “Fast & Furious 6” was the most lucrative of them all, grossing more than $788 million worldwide. The seventh installment began shooting in September, with a release planned for July. The film’s production was on break with more shooting to be done. Walker stars in the upcoming Hurricane Katrina drama “Hours,” which Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films is to release Dec. 13. He also stars in “Brick Mansions,” a remake of the French action film “District B13” in post-production that Relativity plans to release next year. “Paul was an incredibly talent artist, devoted philanthropist and friend,” Relativity President Tucker Tooley said in a statement. DENPASAR - Thousands of police officers are deployed to guard the World Trade Organization (WTO) conference, which will be held in Bali from Dec. 3 to 6. “All personnel of the Bali provincial police are on standby to guard the WTO meeting,” the head of the Bali provincial police’s operations bureau, Snr. Comr. I Gede Alit Widana, said after a roll call at Nusa Dua, Bali, on Sunday.
But he stopped short of revealing the number of police personnel. Police from West Java, Central Java and East Java provinces also sent their personnel to help guard the meeting, he said. “We also receive security as-
sistance from the National Police Headquarters,” he said. The personnel from the three provincial police and the National Police Headquarters would be tasked with escorting delegates, conducting intelligence activities, combating terrorism and safeguarding vital objects, he said. The 9th WTO ministerial conference would bring together about 10 thousand participants from 167 countries, including 20 observer
countries, he said. “We started the week-long security on December 1,” he said. Adj. Comr. Wayan Setiajaya, public relations chief of Jembrana police, said last Friday the Jembrana resort police have tightened security at the Gilimanuk sea port by adding 45 police officers in view of the WTO conference. Wayan added that the additional officers would focus on guarding the entrance gate of Bali, as well as the exit gate.
Police will also patrol the waters of the Bali Strait with the help of the Waters Police of Pengambengan village and in the Gilimanuk area. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the WTO meeting at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Tuesday (Dec 3). The conference will later discuss a wide range of issues including world trade mechanism. Indonesian Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan will chair the meeting.
