Farmers of Subak Apit Jaring lose two harvests Drought on the farmland of Subak Apit Jaring, Batannyuh and Kuwum Village, Marga, Tabanan is growing more apprehensive. Rice farmers have been unable to cultivate their land for six months. As a result, local farmers can not enjoy the harvest for two times. Instead, farmers only take advantage of grasses for cattle feed. Since the farmland is rainfed, farmers in the Subak Apit Jaring can only rely on the rainwater for their land cultivation. When it does not rain normally, farmers are forced to have a break from planting rice because the irrigation at location is too difficult. “If there is no rain, all farmers get unemployed and are unable to harvest,� complained

Based on the data, the HIV/AIDS case during the period of five years progressively increases, where many cases are found in the productive age group of 15-49 years. Based on cumulative data of HIV/AIDS case in Indonesia, about 80 percent of the cases are found in the productive age. In Bali, almost 90 percent of HIV/ AIDS cases occur in the productive age. The fact was revealed by the HIV/AIDS activist, Prof. I Nyoman Mangku Karmaya, on Wednesday (Nov 30). On the other hand, the productive age was an age of labor force widely employed in the company or running their own business. It could be concluded that productive age or the age of workers posed the most potentially infected by HIV/AIDS. “Every company has the potential to employ people with HIV,� said Mangku. The current problem in Indonesia was that many companies had no policy on HIV/AIDS. Meanwhile, the negative stigma and discrimination against the sufferers occurred every day. “Management of the company is not very aware about HIV/AIDS and people are afraid to be open because they do not know their rights in the
company as well as fear of being discriminated,� said Mangku. As a result, there would be internal conflict in the company, discomfort for colleagues and sufferers themselves, soaring health costs and increasing mortality rate until causing the patients to lose their job. It required some measures like provision of more information on HIV/AIDS in the workplace and program to address HIV/AIDS to avoid such occurrences. “Here, it is required the commitment from every level of management and the company should have a policy on HIV/AIDS in the workplace and hold activities on HIV/AIDS at least twice a month to enrich the insight and knowledge of employees regarding HIV/AIDS,� explained Mangku. With the existence of protection program of HIV/AIDS and issuance of policy in a company, at least it could reduce the negative stigma and discrimination so that it would have an impact on the increase of labor productivity. “Simultaneous and continuous information will provide updated information for the employees about HIV/AIDS. They also feel safe when getting in touch with sufferers in the workplace as having known the transmission of HIV,� said Mangku. (san)

According to I Nyoman Karyana, Wednesday (Nov 30), the meeting facilitated by the Benoa Headman initially discussed about the remaining funds of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expended by BTDC during 2011. According to him, BTDC claimed to have allocated IDR 114 million from a total of IDR 200 million for various activities of customary village through a variety of proposals submitted by local community. However, the expose of BTDC was responded less vivaciously by chiefs of customary village and community leaders.
People considered the disbursement of CSR fund to the customary village to have not existed yet. Disbursement of CSR funds of BTDC was not in accordance with stipulation in the MoU because disbursement in the BTDC version was considered to be aimed at institutions beyond the three customary villages. Apart from the issue of CSR funds, in fact BTDC had not implemented a number of agreement points as stipulated in the MoU, including the recruitment of local employment and provision of public space whereas it was a very basic demand. Provision of public space or public area at Selagan Nusa Dua should not be forgotten. According to Karyana, today or after the MoU had run for about 10
months, there should have been an evaluation on the implementation of the MoU. “It has been long and now it’s time to make evaluation. However, it’s impossible because the realization has not even been made yet. Therefore, we hope the stakeholders, including government, to help resolve this problem completely,� he said. He added the meeting held on Tuesday seemed redundant because President Director of BTDC, Ida Bagus Wirajaya, did not attend it. As consequence, the meeting could make no decision. Nevertheless, representatives of the BTDC claimed to be seeking a solution for the problems. NPE

the gayas pest attack keep on spreading in Karangasem where 600 farmers are sent to control and destroy it manually especially at Darah Village, Karangasem which in the past two weeks at least 21 thousands gayas worms and its beetle (telebo or ampal) caught and destroyed. Head of SubakAbian Waringin from the village, Nengah Sudi, last Wednesday (30/11) stated that the people here know that the worms and beetles can be a delicious food and so it is known the farmers here have controlled and destroyed these pests. Yet since 2005 the development of the pests keep on increasing until it cause losses for farmers as roots of plants such as bananas, coconut trees, seasonal nuts,
sweet potatoes and more are attacked all the time causing the hundred hectares of land unproductive. Other subak manager, I Gede Tunas alias Sanut, also stated the same thing, even though it has been captured and destroyed but the gayas population keeps on increasing. Revision of the Law No. 32/2004 on Regional Government is likely to cause various shifts in the political management. A governor formerly elected in person will be directed to representative system in the Regional House. Even, the electoral system in a package will also be reviewed by simply electing the governor, regent and mayor. To prevent the free markets in the management of representative election, Ministry of Home Affairs will include a clause giving authorization to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to hack the phone number of legislators. It was stated by Directorate General of Regional Autonomy, Ministry of Home Affairs. Prof. Dr. Djohermansyah Djohan, when appearing as a speaker in the Seminar on Consolidation of Democracy, Regional Autonomy and Security Issues in Indonesia, Wednesday (Nov 30). He said the revision of Law No. 32/2004 was based on various considerations, namely the efficiency of democracy, prevention of official disharmony as well as the appreciation to political realities. “This revision is expected to make the space of democracy effective and efficient, but not to make free market democracy colored with the transaction of power,� he said. He also said the potential emergence of weakness toward the revisions would be anticipated by including various clauses. His party would also anticipate the potential for civil servants becoming the victims of regional leader election. Meanwhile, Minister of National Development Planner (PPN)/ Head of National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), Armida S Alisjahbana, in the keynote speech delivered by Deputy Minister for Political, Legal and Defense Affairs, Prasetijono Widjojo, said that process of democratic consolidation became one of the best solutions to resolve various problems faced by the nation, especially the economic problems and various kinds of corruption and abuse in the state administration. “The matter concerning the direct correlation between democracy and people’s welfare or the welfare of community still continues to be a long debate, especially among the practitioners, economists, politicians, as well as the wider community. Another speaker, Director of Politics and Communications, Ministry of PPN/Bappenas, Dr. RD Siliwanti, said that Bappenas had launched a book on Indonesia Democracy Index (IDI) 2009 which was expected to provide an overview on the development of democracy in 33 provinces in Indonesia. “IDI is expected to become a more measurable basis for the development of democracy in Indonesia in the future based on clear aspects, variables and indicators that can be compared each year,� she said. Meanwhile, related to security issues, Assistant I Deputy V of Coordinating Ministry for Politics, Legal and Security Affairs, Brig. Gen. of Police Didik T Prijandono, said that achievement of social welfare depended on the security. According to him, security, tranquility and orderliness in the society were necessary prerequisite to ensure a prosperous community. “The link between the security and enjoyment of full civil and political rights as well as the economic, social and cultural rights is getting to be more recognized as indicated by the fact that development initiatives are now always be associated with security issues,� he explained. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s exports in October reached a total value of US$16.90 billion, down 4.21 percent from the previus month, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said. However, the October 2011 exports value was 16.70 percent higher than that in the same month last year, BPS Deputy Chief for Distribution and Service Statistics Djamal said on Thursday. The agency noted that oil and gas exports fell 26.30 percent to US$2.89 billion in October from US$3.93 billion a month earlier. However, non-oil/non-gas exports increased 2.17 percent to US$13.91 billion in October from US$13.61 billion the month before. Non-oil/non-gas exports in
October 2011 mostly went to China with their value recorded at US$2.24 billion, Japan US$1.55 billion and the United States US$1.39 billion. “The commodities that recorded the highest export value in October were the same as those in the previous month. They were mineral fuel and fats,’’ he said. However, the export of fats and oil in October 2011 fell 1.81 percent to US$1.53 billion from Us41.81 billion in September. Cumulatively, the country`s exports in the ten months through October reached US$169.03 billion, a 34.88 percent increase compared to the same period last year. In the January-October 2011 period, non-oil/non-gas exports meanwhile rose 30.36 percent to US$134.73 billion.

TENGGARONG - The number of dead victims found at the location of the collapsed bridge in Tenggarong, Kutai Kertanegara, East Kalimatan on Thursday morning reached 20. On Thursday at 08.25 a.m. local time, a Search and Rescue team found one more body, identified as Makmur Azis (37), three kilometers from the collapsed bridge. “The victim was successfully identified only moments after his body was found based on a report from his wife, Umi Salmah, this morning,” the head of the East Kalimantan provincial police`s medical service, Adj. Snr. Comr. Budi Heryadi said.

On November 26 our embassy in Sanaa received a report about the death of our brothers in a fire fight at an institute of higher learning where they studied,” he said at a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I for defense, information and foreign affairs. relatives and got assurance from them to arrange the bodies of the students, he said. The Foreign Ministry needed approval from their relatives whether to bury them in Yemen or Indonesia, he said. “After we talked with their relatives they agreed to bury them in Yemen and until now we still communicate with their relatives,” he said. The two Indonesian citizens studied at a religious institute of higher learning in Yemen’s southwestern province of Saada bordering Saudi Arabia. It was junky rubbish from the headwaters of river carried away after heavy rain. As if it had become a tradition, the piles of rubbish were always dominated by twigs and dry wood, while others consisted of the remnants of ritual paraphernalia washed away by the river water. Such junky rubbish set to look scattered since the past few days. Inevitably, that condition began making the fishermen uncomfortable. Similarly, visitors were also made a little uncomfortable. “The rubbish is reasonably a lot and looks uncomfortable,� said Nyoman, one of the visitors, Wednesday

Though sweet, its ripe fruit is less delicious because of many seeds. However, it may be enjoyed by making it into a drink mixed with palm sugar and tamarind paste. Meanwhile, its young fruit is used for the mixture of tum (steamed chopped meat with complete spices) and lawar (chopped meat mixed with boiled vegetables served with complete spices). Here, the young seedy banana is enjoyed as vegetable in coconut milk. Ingredients: 6 pcs young seedy banana and 2 cup of coconut milk Spices: 4 cloves shallot, 2 cloves garlic, 2 small chilies, 1 red large chili, 1 slice turmeric, 1 slice kencur, ½ tsp coriander, 1tbsp cooking oil and ½ tsp salt, while MSG is optional. Since the skin of beans is hard it cannot digest them so civet could only enjoy the flesh. On the next day, those seeds could be found at the feces of civet. All seeds remain intact. However, if people see the ripe fruits first, they will not need to wait the coming of civet to pick them. To process the beans, they are first cleansed thoroughly and dry under the sun. Afterward, they should be fried without oil but sand. When they have been finely cooked they can be enjoyed while relaxing or lazing. It was Adele’s year, and when the Grammy Awards are revealed next February, it very well may be her night. But on Wednesday night, the British songstress shared in the Grammy nominations glory. While she was nominated for six trophies, including album of the year for “21” and record and song of the year for her bitter groove “Rolling in the Deep,” Bruno Mars and the Foo Fighters also received six, and it was Kanye West who was the night’s top leader, with seven nominations. West was nominated for song of the year for his all-star anthem “All of the Lights,” which featured everyone from Rihanna to Elton John. But even though the album from which it came, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” heralded an epic album by critics when it was released last year, it was not featured in the best album category (so far, no obligatory West rant has surfaced in response). Bon Iver, the folky indie rock act that was a key part of “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” and received a popularity boost from its association with Kanye, received four nominations, including for best artist, and song and record of the year for “Holocene.” And last year’s critical darlings, Mumford & Sons, were once again nominated, receiving among their bids for song and record of the year for “The Cave.” Other multiple nominees were Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Radiohead, and dubstep artist Skrillex, who landed a

PHILADELPHIA — A rare and pristine copy of the first issue of Action Comics, famed for the first appearance of Superman, has set a record Wednesday for the most money paid for a single comic book: $2.16 million. The issue, graded at 9.0, was auctioned starting Nov. 11 online at www.comicconnect.com. The starting bid was just $1 but there was a reserve price of $900,000. Neither the name of the buyer nor seller was disclosed. It’s the first time a comic book has broken the $2 million barrier. The issue was published in 1938 and cost just 10 cents. “When we broke the record in 2010 by selling the Action Comics No. 1, graded at 8.5, for $1.5 million, I truly believed that this was a record that would stand for many years to come,” said Stephen Fishler, CEO of ComicConnect.com and Metropolis Collectibles. The previous record set in March 2010 was followed by the sale of another copy for $1 million. But neither of those issues was in as good a condition as the issue that sold Wednesday, though it’s pedigree of setting records was already documented. Twice before it set the record for the most expensive book ever, selling for $86,000 in 1992 and $150,000 in 1997. But in 2000, it was stolen and thought lost until it was recovered in a storage shed in California in April this year. About 100 copies of Action Comics No. 1 are believed to be in existence, and only a handful of those in good condition. After it was stolen, Fishler said, collectors figured it would never be found or, worse, would be destroyed. “Clearly, I was wrong. Not in my wildest imagination could I have predicted that this legendary, stolen Action Comics No. 1 would be found, graded at 9.0 and break the record a year and a half later,” he said.

While at the same time maintaining a Premier League stranglehold, and filling their coffers with other silverware, United’s performances in the League Cup since the 1990/91 season have seen them lose to lower league opposition nine times -- almost an average of once every other season. Not all of those defeats led to elimination, on occasion United bounced back in a two-legged contest. McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh wants Pirelli to give Formula 1 teams “more headaches” with its tyres next year in order to continue improving the show. Although the Italian tyre manufacturer, which returned to Formula 1 this year after an absence of 20 years, has been praised for its contribution to make racing more exciting, Whitmarsh suggested the company became too conservative towards the end of the year. That meant that the teams and their drivers had it easier when managing the rubber than at the start of the season, when they were still figuring out the best way to use it. Whitmarsh reckons Pirelli needs to get back to producing tyres that degrade faster in order to bring back that uncertainty next year. “I think they unwittingly or otherwise made a great contribution to the show at the beginning,” said Whitmarsh. “It gave us a lot of headaches. “I think the tyres in terms of durability and degradation they got disturbingly better as the year has gone on, and I think we would like
to give them the challenge of making high degradation tyres and give us a bit more headache. “While drivers will always feel uncomfortable in those situations, I think they made quite a big contribution to the season, so I think KERS and DRS made an impact but you have to keep working to make sure we have a spectacle and show.” Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali believes the Italian company has done a very good job this season, at the same time agreeing with Whitmarsh that there are still way to improve the situation.
“I think that we need to congratulate Pirelli because it was not an easy job to take over from Bridgestone,” said Domenicali. “And there were a lot of comments at the beginning of the season about pitstops or difficult handling of the tyres. “It was the first year and everything went well and I am sure next year there will be other possibilities to improve the situation for the race.” Pirelli has stated that it plans to be more aggressive with its tyre choices next year, reducing the performance gap between different compounds in order to offer more strategic options for teams. “I think next season you will not get the whole season run on the soft,” said Pirelli’s Paul Hembery. “We will close down the gap between the compounds and you will see races where hard and medium is used. The data is showing a big improvement in performance.

De Puniet had tested for Suzuki this winter, but when the Japanese manufacturer withdrew its works team at the end of this season he announced a deal with Aspar, where he will compete alongside Aleix Espargaro. The team will use Aprilia-powered CRT bikes for 2012, which were rolled out for the first time in a private test at Jerez recently. De Puniet admitted that the team’s pace was still a long way off that of the prototypes, but that good first impressions to an overall feeling of optimism within the Aspar camp. “It was a good first impression and so the two days were encouraging,” the 30-year-old said. “We had great testing conditions for the two days,
we made some progress and I had fun with this bike. “I’m happy with my times and my pace - we are still far from the prototypes, but I think we can be pleased because it was the first time riding the bike, and it’s far from the bike that it will be in January.
“I worked with Aspar in 2005, my last GP win was with them and it’s a very competent team. I know they will do everything possible to have the best material and I’m very optimistic about this new project.” De Puniet said the test had also helped the team find the best direction to develop the bike. “The objective of this test was to try to decide on a direction to build a chassis and I think the team now has a good idea of how to move forward,” he explained. “We will do more testing at Jerez in late January, before going to Sepang with a bike that won’t yet be final, as we’ll continue to develop it, but it will be the basis of what we’ll have next season.”
