Jackson wrongful death case refiled Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson’s father refiled a wrongful death lawsuit Tuesday against the doctor charged in his son’s death and added as a defendant a Las Vegas pharmacy that records show sold the physician a powerful anesthetic blamed for his death. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages against Dr. Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty in the separate criminal case to involuntary manslaughter in the singer’s June 2009 death. Joe Jackson initially filed his case against Murray in federal court on the
first anniversary of his son’s death. A judge, however, refused to hear the case and said it should be handled in state court, where it was refiled Tuesday. “This has been a long process and the facts of Michael’s death have been way too slow in emerging,” said Joe Jackson’s attorney, Brian Oxman. “There is still much to discover and we’re going to find it out.” The lawsuit also names Applied Pharmacy Services, which court records show sold Murray the anesthetic propofol during the month before the singer’s death. Tourism Office examines travel agency employing foreign tour guides

Bali Government Tourism Office (Disparda) immediately traced the existence of travel agencies operating in Bali. It responded to the report of Privet Bali mentioning the existence of travel agencies employing foreigners as tour guide. “We will soon examine the presence of travel agencies, particularly those handling the Russian market, employing foreigners as tour guide. Regional Regulation (Perda) on tour guides explicitly mentions that foreigners are not permitted to practice as a tour guide,” said the Head of Bali Government Tourism Office, I.B. Kade Subhiksu, accompanied by the Division Head of Tourism Business Management Ni Nyoman Ayu Andriani in Denpasar on Tuesday (Nov 30). In dealing with foreigners as a tour guide, according to Subhiksu, Bali Government Tourism Office stayed to refer to the Regional Regulation No. 5/2008 on tour guides. The making of the regulation had involved the Association of Indonesian Tour Guides (HPI) and Association of the Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA). Bali Government Tourism Office had socialized the regulation to travel agencies becoming the members of ASITA, including travel agencies handling the Russian market in Bali. “On that account, there is no reason for travel agencies to employ foreign tour guides on the pretext that they do not know about the regional regulation No. 5/2008 concerning with tour guides,” he said. According to him, the supervision against the unlicensed tour guides, the tourism office ad involved a sweeping team. The team itself performed surveillance at the office of travel agencies including at tourist destination across Bali. Currently, the team of Bali Government Tourism Office was still studying the information presented by Privet Bali related to the existence of Russian travel agencies employing foreigners as a tour guide. “Initially, our sweeping team will conduct an approach to the travel agencies that so far identified to employ foreign tour guides pursuant to the information of Privet Bali,” he said. Tourism office would examine whether the travel agency employing the foreign tour guide had business permit and permit to employ foreign labor (IMTA) and whether the foreigners hired in the travel agency had a working visa. “Immigration office can deport foreigners who are proven to practice as a tour guide in Bali,” he said. In the meantime, Chairman of the Privet Bali, Tanto Ruwiyadi, hoped that Bali Government Tourism Office would not only perform a control against the Russian travel agencies employing foreign tour guides, but also enforcement against the illegal online businesses. It was supported by the fact that 99 percent of Russian tourists making complaints were the victim of the business practice. “Illegal online travel agencies ensnare their victims with the lure of cheap accommodation with panoramic backdrop of the beach. In fact, what presented on the website was not appropriate with the real facts,” he said. He indicated that illegal online travel agencies knew exactly about the characteristics of Russian tourists so they could easily deceive their victims. As a result, many Russian tourists finally did not want to come back to Bali. Meanwhile, the Division Head of Publications and Public Relations of Bali Province, Ketut Teneng, said the presence of foreign tour guides had the potential to harm the image of Bali tourism. It was kindled by their incapability to provide the correct information about Bali for tourists they handled. “When escorting tourists, a tour guide must be equipped with a license. Foreign tour guides do not hold license so they can be classified into illegal tour guides. Failure on agricultural sector growth indicates Bali’s economic inequality Denpasar (Bali Post)—
So far, the failure on the growth of agricultural sector in Bali has been so far considered by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics of Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Ramantha, as a signal of imbalance in the economy of the region. To advance the agricultural sector, it was required a comprehensive policy including the incentives to investors getting interested to invest their capital in the sector. “Such incentives can be in the form of convenience in the licensing process, tax incentives and other incentives. In addition, this investment sector must be more driven by designing pro-investment policies,” explained Ramantha on the sidelines of a seminar at the office of Bank Indonesia in Denpasar on Tuesday (Nov 30). “It is called unbalanced because until now the agricultural sector remains to become the most absorbing labor. However, this largest absorber of labor does not grow. It is sufficiently concerned,” he said. Ramantha also considered the economic growth of Bali in 2010 estimated to reach 6 percent exceeded the growth target for this yearend amounting to 5.66 percent did not maximally trigger new job opportunities. A study mentioned that each increase of 0.1 percent in the eco-
nomic growth would lead to new job opportunities around 1,000-2,000 vacancies. Based on the data of BI Denpasar, cumulatively the Bali’s economic growth in the third quarter of 2010 was dominated by trade, hotels and restaurants reaching IDR 6.691 billion. The three sectors were able to contribute 32.36 percent or grew by 5.51 percent compared to same period in 2009. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector had a contribution to the economy of Bali as much as 19.37 percent with a value of IDR 4.005 billion, services sector (IDR 2.881 billion), transportation sector (IDR 2.315 billion), processing industry (IDR 2.061 billion), financial and company services (IDR 1.488 billion), electricity, gas, and clean water (IDR 323 billion) and mining sector (IDR 134 billion). Hundreds of Raider 900 Troops Trained in Negara Negara (Bali Post) Hundreds of Batalyon Raider 900 members were directed to train for foreign attacts anticipation at Jembrana last Tuesday (30/11). The education sector of Gianyar Region is still faced by many problems that need to be finished as stated by Vice Gianyar Regent Dewa Made Sutanaya in the middle of attending an education seminar at vocational school SMKN 1 Tampaksiring last Tuesday (30/11). The various problems until now were the limited education facilities, educators placement not proportional from the numbers of them even their qualification, also the parents ability to prepare education fees for their children. Yet there are some efforts to increase the education quality in Gianyar done already by the government such as gradually provided education facilities, proportional placement for educators, preparing fees for BOS, and free education fee for Elementary and Junior High School. Prof. Dr. I Wayan Sadia, MPd, a public figure of the education world revealed one of the education sector problems in Gianyar was that when increasing the teachers’ quality through training methods failed was due to the conventional method that was less pressured during the training. To anticipate this weakness, conventional lesson study method is a model or a strategic in-service training that focuses on the effort to get teacher sources suiting the capacity also the problems faced by each teachers. Made Yudana added, in increasing the teachers professionalism has three basic things that have been ignored so the training was never optimal. First, the theme that’s discussed has to be technically and methodological. Second, the effort to increase so and paint its character has become a national issue. Third, the symptoms to equalize because of the increasing schools right now, actually has a basic mistake. Human Skeleton Found in Kuta
Expected to Have Died Five Years Ago Denpasar (Bali Post) –
The found human skeleton at Eden Hotel project location, Kartika Plaza Street, Kuta on Monday afternoon (29/11) around 3.15 pm local time shocked the locals as it was found under soils of the project which then brought to Sanglah Hospital around 10 pm local time to be investigated further. The process to unite it again happened on Tuesday (30/11). Head of SMF/Forensic Section for Sanglah Hospital, dr. Ida Bagus Putu Alit,
SpF. DFM stated from the investigation it is known that it died around 3-5 year ago, “The age of its death can be known from the bone’s age. Inside the bones there’s no neuron found again.” Besides that it was also found its skull was not complete anymore. Some of its small bones were gone. Apparently it is because of it got buried so long and corroding, “The little bones such as ribs were gone. It is possible because it already united with the soils.”
From the leg bone measurement, the height of the victim is around 148-166 centimeters. It is predicted the age was 23-35 looking from the skull, “The victim is to be suspected a Balinese looking from the teeth on its skull has been flattened.” While waiting from the family’s side reports, the skeleton is now being placed at the Corpse Room of Sanglah Hospital. Clinton seeks more European help in Afghanistan AP
ASTANA, Kazakhstan – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called on a European security organization Wednesday to play a bigger role in helping stabilize Afghanistan and to do more to strengthen the voice of human rights groups worldwide. In the aftermath of the leak of huge numbers of sensitive U.S. diplomatic cables by the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy website, Clinton also urged a greater commitment to press freedom, but she made no overt reference to the embarrassing episode. “It is not enough for a constitution to guarantee freedom of the press if, in reality, journalists are put under intense pressure and even assaulted,” she told the opening session of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s first summit meeting in 11 years. She made no explicit mention of WikiLeaks, nor did it come up in other officials’ speeches on the first day of the summit. On Afghanistan, Clinton said the OSCE can play an important role to improve border security, counter illicit trafficking, boost legitimate trade, promote economic development and help develop national institutions. She urged a recommitment to what she called “comprehensive security” — not just protection against armed attack but also protection of democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms. The summit is being held over two days in Astana, the gleaming new Kazakh capital rising from the sparsely populated northern steppes. The OSCE was born in the 1970s to nurture rapprochement between Cold War enemies. But the organization has in recent years struggled to define a clear purpose — an anxiety reflected in the speeches of many leaders at the Astana summit. In the opening address, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon lamented shortcomings among the group’s members in enforcing the rule of law and protecting the rights of minorities. “The OSCE unfortunately sometimes sees violations of its commitments in its own area,” he told delegates. Those words will have been uncomfortable fare for summit host nation Kazakhstan, whose government has been subjected to frequent OSCE admonitions for failing to live up to commitments on improving media freedoms and democratic standards. Russia’s Putin warns West over missile defense: report Reuters
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told CNN television that Russia will deploy nuclear weapons and “strike forces” if it is shut out of a Western missile defense system, echoing a warning from President Dmitry Medvedev. In an interview with Larry King taped on Tuesday, Putin said missile threats against Europe must be tackled jointly — a reference to an agreement reached at a RussiaNATO summit this month to cooperate on missile defense.
But if Russia’s proposals are rejected and new threats appear along its borders, “Russia will have to ensure its own security,” Putin said, according an English translation of an excerpt posted on the CNN website.
Russia would “put in place new strike forces ... against the new threats which will have been created along our borders,” Putin said. “New missile, nuclear technologies will be put in place.” Putin said Russia does not want this to happen and is not threatening the West, but the remarks underscored the Kremlin’s insistence on a significant role in a missile defense system and suggested ties could sour badly if agreement is not reached.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Anti-whaling activists launch ‘Godzilla’ speedboat Agence France Presse
SYDNEY – Militant anti-whaling campaigners said Wednesday they had launched a new “Godzilla” speedboat to chase Japanese harpooners hunting the giant mammals in Antarctic waters. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society this week unveiled its newest vessel “Gojira”, as the giant monster Godzilla is known in Japan, some 11 months after its futuristic Ady Gil craft was lost in a high-seas clash with whalers. The Australia-flagged 33-metre (100-foot) stabilised monohull is imposing without being overly heavy, and will be fast enough to chase the Japanese, the group’s Australian director Jeff Hansen said. “We are not going to release the speed (it can reach), we are just saying that it is going to go faster than a harpoon ship,” he told AFP. “This vessel is purely to be used for its speed advantage.” The black Gojira, which previously completed a round-the-world voyage in less than 80 days under the name Cable & Wireless Adventure, will join veteran Sea Shepherd ships the Bob Barker and the Steve Irwin on their annual southern hemisphere summer pursuit of the Japanese whalers. Hansen said the two larger boats would leave Tasmania on Thursday, with the Gojira catching up with them several days later. Iran hangs woman for murdering love rival Agence France Presse
TEHRAN – Iran on Wednesday hanged a woman convicted of murdering a love rival, her lawyer told the official IRNA news agency. Shahla Jahed was hanged at 5:00 am (01:30 GMT) after the verdict was confirmed by the supreme court and the judiciary chief, lawyer Abdolsamad Khoramshahi said. The London-based rights group Amnesty International on Tuesday called on Iran to halt Jahed’s execution, saying “there are good reasons to suggest that she may have been wrongly convicted.” Jahed, who had a so-called “temporary” marriage with Nasser Mohammad Khani, a former striker for the Iranian national team, was convicted of stabbing to death his “permanent” wife eight years ago. In the Shiite faith that is the majority religion in Iran, men and women can marry for an agreed period of time. Afterwards, the marriage is null and void, although it can be renewed. Men can have up to four permanent wives, and any number of temporary wives. Women can only be married to one man at a time. Amnesty said that in early 2008 the judiciary overturned the verdict and ordered a fresh investigation, citing “procedural flaws.” However, Jahed was again sentenced to death in February 2009. Khani was a prominent Iranian footballer in the 1980s and late became a coach for Tehran’s Persepolis football club. The execution is the 146th so far this year, according to an AFP count based on media reports. At least 270 people were executed in 2009. The Islamic republic says the death penalty is essential to maintain law and order and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings. Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.

President officially opens conference on corruption Antara
JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially opened a national conference on Corruption Eradication (KNPK) here Tuesday. The conference was initiated by the KPK (Corruption Eradication Commission). On Tuesday afternoon, KPK leaders met the President at his office to report about the conference. KPK commissioner M Jasin after the meeting told the press that the conference was the fifth KPK would be organizing. Around 400 people, including representatives of 97 institutions, and 57 media organizations, are participating in the conference to discuss measures to prevent corruption in state-owned companies (BUMNs).
The head of state on the occasion asked KPK to monitor the implementation of procurement of goods and services in the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI). “We will monitor procurement of goods and services in all sectors electronically. So there will be no discrimination. It affects all sectors including the TNI. This is what the President has said,” M Jasin said after meeting with the President. Jasin said KPK had not yet started monitoring projects in the TNI but he assured that KPK would expand its cooperation network with all government institutions to save state money used in the projects. He said every institution had better start using online system of procurement to reduce meetings between government officials and suppliers and possible
bribery cases and irregularities. Jasin said the average potential budget irregularities in procurement of goods and services in government institutions reached around 40 percent, He said the budget for procurement in a government institution could reach hundreds of trillions of rupiahs. He said the state would suffer a huge loss if 40 percent of the budget was embezzled. KPK had so far mostly handled irregularities in the procurement of goods and services with regional or state budget funds. Eighty percent of the total cases handled by KPK in 2006 were cases of corruption in the spending of budget funds for procurement of goods or services. The number of such cases dropped in 2007 and 2008 but still accounted for around 50 percent of all cases dealt with by KPK.
Merapi again spews hot clouds Antara
SLEMAN - Mount Merapi again spewed hot clouds on Tuesday afternoon after its activity showed signs of abating in the past few days. The hot clouds were visible from Ngipiksari hamlet, Sleman district, Yogyakarta province, at around 10.45 a.m. and moved in the easterly direction to Woro River in Klaten district, Central Java province, local residents said. The residents of the hamlet who returned home from refugee camps three days ago said Tuesday‘s hot clouds were one of the biggest since the Nov 5 massive eruption. “The hot clouds could be watched for a few minutes before
haze blanketed the volcano`s peak,” one of the residents said. Mt Merapi, the world‘s most active volcano, had erupted repeatedly in the past two or three weeks but its most fatal eruptions occurred on Oct 26 and Nov 5. At least 259 people had perished and many others sustained burns and became displaced in the eruptions. The total number of refugees being sheltered in 639 refugee centers in Yogyakarta and Central Java reportedly reached 367,548. Taiwan has donated US$50,000 in fund to the Indonesian Red Cross
(PMI) to rehabilitate areas affected by the Mount Merapi eruptions. Andrew Hsia of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (Teto) in Jakarta handed the aid to PMI chairman Yusuf Kalla recently, Teto said in a press statement on Tuesday. Hsia expressed hope the aid would be helpful for the PMI to continue rehabilitating disaster-hit areas to allow the affected people to resume a normal life.Kalla said he was thankful for the aid and pledged to use it properly. “We all know Java is the most populous island. Whenever a disaster occurs it claims many lives. The reconstruction of the affected areas will need a long time and cost a sizable amount of funds,” he said.
“The October export performance is a new record,” BPS head Rusman Hariawan said at his office here on Wednesday. He said the old record was set in December 2009 when exports were recorded at a total value of US$13.3 billion and in August 2010 when they reached US$13.7 billion. Rusman said that the value of Indonesia’s exports in October 2010 was 16.72 percent higher than that of September 2010 which was US$12.08 billion. He said that the total exports in October 2010 which stood at US$14.22 billion consisted of among others US$11.61 billion from non oil and gas commodities while US$2.61 billion from oil and
gas commodities. Indonesia’s cumulative export value from January to October 2010 stood at US$125.13 billion or an increase of 35.45 percent from that in the same period in 2009. Non-oil exports stood at US$103.40 billion, an increase of 32.21 percent compared with the same period last year. Rusman said that with this export performance, the total of Indonesia’s exports at the end of 2010 could be expected to reach US$150 billion. “If the export value target for November was set at 12 billion dollars, and for December at 13 billion dollars, I think, these figures can well be achieved because the balance is US$25 billion only,” he added.
BI’S balance sheet expected to show RP30 trillion deficit Antara
BANDUNG - Bank Indonesia’s balance sheet in 2010 is expected to register a deficit of Rp30 trillion, well above the target of Rp22.3 trillion for this year. The higher deficit was caused by a sizable amount of funds spent on monetary operations to stabilize the rupiah’s exchange rate due to the onslaught of foreign capital inflows this year, Harti Haryani, the central bank’s internal finance director, said here on Tuesday. “Until October the BI’s budget deficit reached Rp26 trillion. According to our forecast, it will run into Rp30 trillion at the end of this year,” she said.
Spending on monetary operations until October 2010 reached Rp24.8 trillion. But the greatest chunk of the deficit was contributed by budget receipts which reached minus Rp10.8 trillion until September compared to the target of Rp2.12 trillion, she said. She said the deficit had an impact on the central bank’s capital which fell to Rp73.3 trillion as per October 2010 from Rp93.5 trillion a year earlier. “With the expected deficit of Rp30 trillion, BI’s capital will stand at Rp39 trillion at the end of this year,” she said. Under the law, the government must inject additional funds into the central bank if its capital fell to Rp2 trillion, she said.

JAKARTA - The air forces of Singapore and Indonesia began a 10-day joint exercise dubbed Elang Indopura 16/10 in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), an Indonesian Air Force spokesman said. “During the joint exercise, elements from the two air forces will do command post and field maneuvers,” the Indonesian Air Force Headquarters’ chief information officer, Air Commodore Bambang Samedro, said here Wednesday. The maneuvers would include one-to-one and even one-to-two air battles (dog fights) over
Rembiga Airbase in West Nusa Tenggara, he said. The Indonesian Air Force as well as its Singaporean counterpart were represented in the joint exercise by F16 Fighting Falcons with Singapore also using F-5 Tiger fighter aircraft. “The exercise is aimed at improving the skills of the fighter pilots of both countries as well as establishing closer cooperation between them,” Bambang said. The Indonesian Air Force had also assigned F-5 Tiger and SU-30 MK aircraft as escort planes, and the Singaporean air force F-15 SG, C-130 Hercules and SA-330 Puma helicopters.

Kuta – Foreign tourists take part in supporting the HIV/Aids concern act by giving message to warn people on the danger of the disease. The World Aids Day was commemorated in three different cities which were Jakarta, Bandung and Badung, Bali on Wednesday, December 1st 2010. The commemoration was filled with gathering support from the people on the war against Aids. Cece, a member of Parliamentary Group on MDGS, said “on the World Aids Day, we would like to urge everyone to fight against Aids.” The support is gained by giving them the information on Aids by give away brochures and stickers and hold discussion on Aids. The information is also given by the people who suffer from Aids so they can share their experience with others. During the activity, everyone
including the foreign tourists can say what they want and give their opinion on Aids. The committee was preparing a giant wall entitled “Mural Care” for the one who want to express their thought on Aids. Mike, a tourists from Belgium, said “I really like the idea and give my full support on the activity because Aids is very dangerous for us.” Mike was also wrote his feeling on the wall. The tourists who were playing on the beach were interested with the activity and some of them even write some words to warn
the people on the danger of Aids. There were also several performances on the event and at night, the people who are participating in the handling and prevention of Aids was receiving awards. Cece said that the moment is used to remind everyone on the HIV/Aids problem throughout the nation. “This is the perfect time to socialize about Aids, how to prevent and handle it,” she added. Unfortunately, only few local people took part in the event, most of the attendances were foreign tourists.

This ritual aims to provide ngerasak and ngatag for all types of plants where devotees worship the Lord Shankar as the manifestation of Supreme God. On this ocassion, they plead the fertility of plants benefiting for the prosperity of human life. Buda Pon Sungsang or 7 days prior to Galungan is commonly called Sugian Pengenten as the beginning of Nguncal Balung that philosophically means to release or dispose all kinds of negative influence (adharma). This period takes place for 42 days (until Buda Kliwon Paang) where it does not constitute an auspicious time to build a house, a holy place, buy livestock, and get married. Sugian Jawa falls on Wraspati (Thursday), Wage, Wuku Sungsang or 6 days prior to Galungan. Supreme God is worshipped at temple and family temple to invoke the sanctity and preservation of macrocosm (universe). Sugian Bali falls on Sukra (Friday), Pon, Wuku Sungsang or 5 days prior to Galungan. Supreme God is worshipped at temple and
family temple to beg chastity and safety for microcosm (human self). Penyekeban is on Redite (Sunday), Paing, Wuku Dungulan, 3 days prior to Galungan. It is the coming down of Bhuta Galungan tempting people to commit adharma deeds. The word Galung is originated from Old Javanese language (Kawi) meaning ’war ’; Bhuta Galungan is human nature intending to fight. To strengthen themselves, human being is instructed to worship the Lord Shiva in order to be kept away from poor properties and symbolically housewives brood fruits and make fermented rice as a symbol of selfrestraint or strengthen the self. Penyajaan is on Soma (Monday), Pon, Wuku Dungulan, 2 days prior to Galungan. It is the coming down of Bhuta Dungulan tempting human more powerfully to commit adharma deeds. Bhuta Dungulan is human nature wishing to conquer others or to win. On that account, human is expected to worship the Lord Shiva to avoid any vices. Symbolically, it is represented through the making of assorted cakes meaning nyajaang in Balinese or attempting thoroughly to dispose the nature of wishing to win. Penampahan is celebrated on Anggara (Tuesday), Wage, Wuku Dungulan, or 1 day prior to Galungan. It is the coming down of Bhuta Amangkurat attempting to tease human beings, especially to
commit adharma conduct. In Old Javanese language, Amangkurat means to have power, while Bhuta Amangkurat is human nature wishing to take control. Humans are instructed to accomplish fighting against the temptation by worshipping the Lord Shiva and defeat the forces of Bhuta Tiga (Bhuta Galungan, Bhuta Dungulan and Bhuta Amangkurat). Today, it is also symbolized by the slaughter of pigs in the series of welcoming the Lord Dharma. And the pig itself is known to symbolize the laziness (tamasic character), so slaugtering pigs can also be interpreted as eliminating the properties of human laziness. Meanhile, in the afternoon devotees instal Penjor equipped with pejati offerings conveying the confirmation of strong will and worship the Lord Mahameru (arching bamboo) for the His blessing in the form of strength of dharma as outlined in the Catur Vedas where each of the Vedas is symbolized in the decoration of Penjor namely Lamak (Rig Vedas), Bakangbakang (Atharwa Vedas), Tamiang (Sama Vedas), and Sampian (Yajur Vedas). In addition, Penjor also represents a gratitude to Supreme God for the adequacy of food and clothing symbolized by hanging a variety of fruits, tubers, snacks as well as yellow and white cloth. By the nightfall, all family members attend a self-purification ritual to welcome
the Galungan festivity on the following day. Ultimately, we have arrived on Galungan festivity, in Buda (Wednesday), Kliwon, Wuku Dungulan. It is a celebration of human triumph against the elements of adharma mainly those residing within the self. Gods and goddess are coming down from heaven to bless human beings on earth. Saying prayers in family temple are intended to express sincere gratitude to Supreme God for His kindness and graces. Manis Galungan falls on Wraspati (Thursday), Umanis, Wuku Dungulan, 1 day after Galungan, devotees perform Dharma Santi namely social visits to family and friends to express gratitude for the victory of dharma and apologize for the mistakes in the past. At night, they say prayers to worship deities in the nine directions (nawa sanga) in order the victory of dharma could be maintained within the self onwards. Penampahan of Kuningan is said to be a Nawa Ratri worship marked by the prayers to a number of gods such as Ishvara, Mahesvara, Brahma, Rudra, Mahadev, Shankar, Vishnu, Sambu, and Tri Purusa (Shiva, Sada Shiva, Parama Shiva). Pemacekan Agung falls on Soma (Monday), Kliwon, Wuku Kuningan, 5 days after Galungan. On this day, devotees put offerings to Bhuta so as not to disturb people
and Tri Hitakarana can be realized. Penampahan Kuningan is on Sukra (Friday), Wage, Wuku Kuningan, 9 days after Galungan. The Hindus are ready to welcome the Kuningan feast, and at night they say the last prayers to deities of Nawa Sanga namely worshiping the gods of Tri Purusha (Shiva, Sada Shiva, Parama Shiva). Kuningan is on Saniscara (Saturday), Kliwon, Wuku Kuningan, 10 days after Galungan. Gods and goddess come down to earth from heaven until midday. Hindu devotees express their profound gratitude for the blessing endowed in the form of the strength of dharma and plead so that we are always kept away from the adharma deeds. On the Kuningan festivity devotees prepare offerings with yellow rice as a symbolic notice (nguningang) to the descendants in order to follow the trace of predecessors celebrating the feast of Galungan - Kuningan. They also install festooning”Tamiang” in shrines as a shield against any attack of adharma forces. Pegat Uwakan denotes the end of the series of Galungan and Kuningan festivities falling on Buda (Wednesday), Kliwon, Wuku Paang, one month or 35 days after Galungan. Denpasar – Bali Government will intensify the development of cows because it has great prospect as the product on inter island trade as well as to fulfill the need of tourism industry in Bali. The head of publication and documentation in Bali Government, I Ketut Teneng, said “through the integrated farming system (Simantri) in 2010, the government gives 1,000 cows to 40 units of Simantri groups throughout Bali.”
The donation is also come from 71 cattle trade companies in Bali. Each Simantri group received 20 cows and can be used as to develop cow production in Bali. Ketut Teneng said that the integrated farming system is handled by the authorized department in each regency by prioritizing the village that has 35% or more poor inhabitants. The farming system was proposed by Bali’s Governor, Made Mangku Pastika and the vice Governor AAN Puspayoga in order to increase the welfare of the farmers.
In addition to cows, the farmers are also developing chicken. Since the poultry from outside Bali is being forbid to enter Bali, the poultry business in the island is developing significantly. “Before, the chicken is very cheap but now it is expensive especially near the Galungan day. The animal is needed on the ritual by the Hindus,” Teneng said. The government urges the farmers to develop cattle and poultry so that the need of them in Bali can be fulfilled by the local farmers so the locals can gain benefit from it.

You can vary the trimmings and garnishes to suit your taste; but even the most elaborate Nasi Goreng is quick to make. It is a particularly good luncheon dish. Boil the rice a good long time before you intend to fry it; you can fry freshly boiled rice, but the Nasi Goreng will be better if the boiled rice is allowed to cool. Two hours is a satisfactory interval. Leaving the rice to cool overnight, however, gives less good results-the rice has time to go dry and stale. An important point to note here is that rice for Nasi Goreng must be cooked with the least possible quantity of water; this prevents it from becoming too soft. For 1 cup of rice, use 1 cup of water. Assuming you have now got your cool, boiled rice, proceed like this: slice the shallots or onion, seed and slice the chilli (or pound the shallots and chilli together in a mortar). Heat the oil in a wok; it makes no difference, by the way, whether you use oil, fat, or butter. Saute the shallots and chilli for a minute or so, and season with salt, soya sauce, and tomato ketchup. Put in all the rice, and stir it continuously until it is well heated: this will take 5 to 8 minutes. KUALA LUMPUR - The head of budget long-haul carrier AirAsia X said Wednesday the eurozone debt crisis would not prevent the airline expanding in Europe and that he hoped to open a route to New York next year. Tony Fernandes said he would “absolutely not” rethink plans to begin new flights into Russia, Hungary and the Czech Republic, adding that the company had survived other crises in the past. “No (cut back in expansion),” the airline’s founder told AFP. “Absolutely not. We have been through the last nine years — many financial crises, many oil crises and many political crises — but people still want to fly. “I think AirAsia actually provides a relief from all these financial troubles. People want to get away and have a break. So not at all.” Fernandes was speaking after launching the carrier’s inaugural flight to Christchurch, to which it will begin four non-stop weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur from April 1. The route will add to AirAsia X’s expanding network, which already includes Australia, India, Taiwan, China, Britain, South Korea, Japan and Iran, and will from February 14 also boast France. AirAsia X, an affiliate of regional low-cost carrier AirAsia and Virgin Group, was launched in January 2007. Fernandes cited strong book-
ings for the Kuala Lumpur-Paris route, which the airline began taking last month, as evidence of the firm’s ability to weather the European financial crisis. “Our strategy has always remained the same despite calamity in the world. I was looking at our load factors to Paris, it is truly unbelievable. We are really full. It is one of our best routes,” he said. The airline is aiming to start new routes to Moscow, Budapest and Prague from 2012 after it takes delivery of new aircraft. “To me if we can have an entire fleet of A330’s that will be fantastic,” said Fernandes. He added that he also hoped to kick of flights to New York next year, describing North America as being “definitely on our plan”. He added: “We would like to fly from one of the European points into New York and at some stage into Los Angeles. It may come in 2011.” Fernandes said the airline has ordered 25 A330-300 and was “pushing” Airbus to provide more range for the planes. “If we can get the A330 into most of Europe then European expansion will be much larger than it is presently,” he said. On the outlook for the company next year, Fernandes said: “We are optimistic. We had a fantastic three quarters. Our fourth quarter is going to be strong. Bookings for the first quarter is looking good.”

BEIJING/BANGALORE - Factories in China and India cranked production up a gear last month, offering a small boost to the global economy faced by a spreading debt crisis in the euro zone and sluggish recoveries in the United States and Japan. But manufacturing surveys in both Asian giants also highlighted a worry that has clouded the outlook for investors: rising inflationary pressure and the need for more monetary tightening in fastgrowing developing economies. That could be a bitter pill to swallow with Europe teetering on the brink of more serious debt troubles. The euro stabilized on Wednesday after falling a day earlier on concern that member states may ultimately be forced to default. Deputy finance ministers from the Group of 20 economies discussed “the financial situation in Europe” on Monday Asia time in a teleconference arranged last week, a senior G20 source in Asia said. The manufacturing sector in Asia provided some solace from the gloomy prognosis in Europe. Two purchasing managers’ indexes in China registered their strongest readings in more than half a year and helped lift Asian shares outside Japan by 0.6 percent. The story was similar in India, where the HSBC Markit PMI climbed to a six-month high. While a rise in output and new orders drove the PMI gains in
China, the biggest increases came in input prices. “Good news from the economy may not be that good for the market as it is concerned about more tightening,” said Ting Lu, an economist with Bank of AmericaMerrill Lynch. “The high PMI reading could convince Beijing to tighten a bit more on the margin.” The strong Indian PMI followed data on Tuesday that showed its economy grew by a blistering 8.9 percent in the September quarter from a year earlier. SINGAPORE - Gold firmed to its highest in nearly three weeks on Wednesday as growing fears about Portugal’s debt pummeled the euro, sending bullion priced in the single currency to a record high. Standard & Poor’s threatened to cut the credit ratings of Portugal, citing uncertainties stemming from the risk of the country having to seek international financial aid — just after Ireland secured an 85 billion euro bailout package from the European Union. Spot gold rose as high as $1,393.15 an ounce, its highest since Nov 12, and was at $1,393.10 an ounce by 0647 GMT, up $8.16. Bullion was still below a lifetime high of around
$1,424 struck in early November. BNP Paribas hiked its 2011 gold price forecast by 20 percent, saying a number of factors — uncertainty on the role of the dollar within the international monetary system, concerns on the stability of peripheral euro zone countries and growing inflationary pressures in Asia — supported an upward trend. “Consequently, we have raised our 2011 gold price forecast to $1,500 an ounce from $1,245 an ounce previously. If we see the gold rally extending in 2012, it will however take place at a more moderate pace. We expect gold to average around 1,600 an ounce in 2012,” BNP Paribas said in a report. Gold priced in euro rallied to a record at 1,070.11 euros an ounce.

LOS ANGELES – Michael Douglas is on an “upward curve” after cancer treatment, his wife said in remarks published Tuesday, while the veteran star said the experience gave him “a little perspective on mortality.” Douglas, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in August and has been out of the public light while undergoing chemotherapy, said he is already preparing for his next movie, in which he is due to play flamboyant entertainer Liberace. “The level of chemo, the amount they’re giving you, combined with radiation, was the max they could do in that period of time,” he told The Hollywood Reporter industry daily, calling the treatment a “hellhole.” “It’s amazing that they almost have to try and kill you to bring you back,” he added, while the interviewer described Douglas as looking “surprisingly well, with his trademark thick hair all there on his head.” Douglas, 66, only revealed his diagnosis when he returned to the United States from a family holiday. In September, he said he was in stage four cancer but with an 80 percent chance of beating it. British actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, who married Douglas in 2000, voiced anger at the time that his chances of beating the cancer had been reduced because it was diagnosed relatively
late. In this latest interview, carried out in the couple’s New York apartment, she said she didn’t take any notice of tabloid newspaper reports suggesting her husband could be near death. “I don’t read any of that stuff, regardless of what it says,” she said. “Where it does affect me, it’s the fact that Michael is sequestered in the apartment. “But he really is on the upward curve now,” added the 41-year-old. Douglas will have a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan in January, to learn whether his tumor has been eliminated, the couple told the industry daily. Asked how the disease had affected him, Douglas said: “I haven’t really digested it yet, truth be told.” “As I looked through the stats, I didn’t think of this as life and death; I just saw it as an illness to get over.
So I didn’t dig into the bottom of my soul to see what I could see,” he added. “It certainly has put a little perspective on mortality, obviously.” Douglas’s last film, the sequel to the 1987 box office hit “Wall Street,” came out in September. Douglas was filmed in “The Money Never Sleeps” before the cancer diagnosis. He is already preparing for his next role: the title part in Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic, which begins shooting in May. “I’ve got a bunch of tapes of performances” of the pianist and entertainer, said Douglas. “I’m thinking; I’m a blank slate. Everything shows me he was a lovely man; I just want to reconfirm that.” Zeta-Jones added of her husband: “He?s an extremely strong person, and I love that strength of character, coupled with the reality that he’s sensitive, he’s humble, he doesn’t take himself too seriously,” she says. “But predominantly, he’s a very strong man. This has really helped through these last months. NEW DELHI – The globe-trotting adventures of intrepid boy reporter Tintin have been opened up to hundreds of millions of Hindi speakers in India after translations by a local enthusiast. The first eight of the original books by late Belgian author and illustrator Herge have gone on sale in the most widely spoken of India’s many vernacular languages, with four more to come in the short-term. The books, created 80 years ago originally in French, have already been translated into more than 80 languages and have sold 230 million copies worldwide, according to the official tintin.com website. Translator Ajay Mago said finding Hindi terms for phrases and jokes used routinely by Tintin and friends throughout their travels was a difficult task. Each book took about two months to finish. “The hardest to translate was ‘billions of bilious blue blistering barnacles’,”
Mago told AFP, a phrase familiar to fans of the grizzled and heavy-drinking seadog character Captain Haddock. “You’re talking about something that is in the sea and there is no direct parallel of it in Hindi.” Tintin is already available in India in English and Bengali, a language spoken in the eastern state of West Bengal. “There is this whole population in India who cannot read English and now it is available to them,” Mago said at the books’ launch at the Belgium embassy in New Delhi on Monday. Herge, accused by critics of representing European colonial-era views, sends Tintin to India in three of his 24 titles: the Blue Lotus; Cigars of the Pharaoh; and Tintin in Tibet, during which he does some sight-seeing in Delhi. “I don’t think he (Herge) ever treated the non-white races with contempt,” said Mago, who said the depictions of India and Indians in the books were fair.

An “anaesthetic accident” occurred during Wang’s procedure at the Zhong Ao Cosmetic Surgery Hospital, according to Xinhua news agency, citing the local health bureau. Wang’s jaw suddenly started bleeding during the procedure, blocking her windpipe and causing her to suffocate, reports said. Wang’s mother was having the
same procedure at the clinic when her daughter died. But this year, millions of people around the world will be glued to their iPad or other tablet computer instead of watching yet another re-run of a movie on TV. Samsung Electronics says it has sold over 700,000 of its Galaxy Tab device in the six weeks since its launch and believes at least a million will be in people’s hands by the end of the year. But that’s still miles behind the iPad, which only went on sale in South Korea — Samsung’s home turf — for the first time on Tuesday. Apple has sold more than eight million of the gadgets since it went on sale in April but could have sold more, experts say, were it not for problems making enough to meet demand. Sony, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM), Toshiba, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Dell, Asus, Acer — most of the big global brand names in the technology sector have a tablet computer on the market or in the pipeline. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab costs around 600 dollars, when bought without a subscription to a network.

Playing the front end of a backto-back, the Spurs led by 10 points at halftime and 18 in the third quarter before cruising over the final 12 minutes. The Warriors made one brief run, closing to 100-88 on a Curry 3-pointer with 6:49 remaining, but that was it. Instead, they finished November with a 14-1 record and remained undefeated in eight road games. Ginobili has been a big reason. The veteran guard is off to one of the best starts of his career and has been particularly efficient over the last week. He is averaging 26.4 points over his last five games and is shooting 51.3 percent from the floor during that stretch. Ginobili scored 16 of his points in the third quarter when the Spurs built an 91-73 lead. Tempers flared late in the third after Richard Jefferson’s alley oop dunk gave the Spurs an 82-66 lead. Jefferson appeared to land on Lee, who took exception and shoved Jefferson. Antonio McDyess stepped in and argued with Lee as players from both teams came rushing in before referees restored order. The officials met briefly then assessed a double technical to Lee and Jefferson. It was that kind of night for the Warriors, who committed 16 turnovers and were outrebounded 50-44. FIA reveals official 2011 entry list Formula 1’s ruling body, the FIA, has published the 2011 entry list, with six teams yet to complete their line-ups for next season. Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, Sauber and Lotus had their line-ups confirmed, with Sauber’s new signing Sergio Perez the only new driver on the list. Robert Kubica’s team-mate at Renault and Rubens Barrichello’s team-mate at Williams are yet to be revealed, the list confirmed. Force India has not confirmed
any of its drivers, while the list did not include any drivers at Toro Rosso either, despite the team having Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari under contract for next year. Newcomers Virgin and Hispania did not have any drivers entered either. The list also had the Lotus team entered as “Team Lotus” despite the row over the use of the name.

Rossi says shoulder progressing well VALENTINO Rossi says he is progressing well following the shoulder surgery he underwent earlier this month. The Italian rider, who struggled with his shoulder since injuring it in a training accident in April, has been recovering since he underwent surgery following the end of the season. On Tuesday, ten stitches were
removed from his right shoulder and Rossi will now begin “passive” rehabilitation work before he starts the active phase in two weeks’ time. “I’m doing the rehabilitation at the shoulder, the situation is improving,” said Rossi on his website. “Two weeks have passed since the operation and this morning Dr. Porcellini took away the stitches. “From today I will be back to work
in the gym - at least for the rest of the body - and to make the rehabilitation of the shoulder, even if ‘passive’; above all not to lose mobility. “In about two weeks I will begin to work actively in the pool and gym to be ready for the three days of testing in February. We must make haste, but we hope to be fit for the first test with Ducati in 2011 in Sepang.”
