Oprah Winfrey, Harry Belafonte honored by Harvard Associated Press

CAMBRIDGE — Oprah Winfrey and performer-activist Harry Belafonte were among those honored at Harvard University on Tuesday at its annual celebration of African American culture. The university’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research presented its annual W.E.B. Du Bois Medals to eight people at the ceremony.

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police are investigating the theft of a solid bronze statue of Ed Sullivan from an outdoor exhibit at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The statue was taken Sunday from atop a pedestal in the academy’s Hall of Fame Plaza in North Hollywood. A police statement describes the statue as standing 18 inches tall and weighing about 20 pounds. The Police Department’s North Hollywood area burglary detectives have asked the public for any information that would lead to an arrest. Officer Drake Madison said Tuesday there had been no break in the case. The plaza where the statue stood honors significant TV personalities and pioneers. Sullivan’s classic variety show, “The Ed Sullivan Show,” lasted for more than two decades. He died in 1974. JIMBARAN - Indigenous wisdom developing in Bali was expected to be a capital in the face of the increasingly intense global competition. To that end, the community was appealed to still be able to maintain, protect as well as preserve the indigenous wisdom as cultural identity of Bali. This was expressed by the Rector of Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Ketut Suastika, on the sidelines of the anniversary at Bukit Jimbaran.

According to him, the indigenous wisdom of Bali could be used as an asset to compete and survive in the midst of globalization characterized by the increasing competition. “When talking about competitiveness, there should be an advantage. Without it, we do not have a competitive edge. We

long have superiority, namely the indigenous wisdom. On that account, Udayana is trying to be consistent with the excellence or legacy at hand, so that we have a strong competitive edge compared to other countries,” he said. He said that Udayana University would consistently preserve the

indigenous wisdom by establishing a study center to preserve the indigenous wisdom from the onslaught of global influences. Not only that, the indigenous wisdom having been established in the community would become a shield against the intense competition. “Through research we make an effort to preserve the indigenous wisdom. Like the establishment of the Center for Bali Studies, Center for Balinese Architectural Studies and Center for Bali Cattle Research pose the obligation and responsibility of the institution. The institution will accommodate professional groups with their respective expertise. We will use this to face the

external onslaught,” he said. Even, his party aspired to make the Udayana University a Center for Indigenous Wisdom Development. “Actually this has been quite a long prepared by predecessors in Udayana. And now we are still building the Humanity Building,” he said. The existence of the building was expected to be the center for studies or cultural center. As planned, the building would be equipped with a museum and center for studies. “So, there will be a museum and center for various studies centralized in the building. Thus, all the thinkers of Udayana can be taken to think about the problems of Bali and Indonesia,” he explained. He mentioned that his party had

submitted a proposal to build the Humanity Building that would be intended as the center for cultural studies. “I do hope the government could assist through the state budget. We have submitted the proposal for the building construction, so that it can be completed next year,” he concluded. Meanwhile, I Wayan Geriya also advised the Udayana University to build a center of excellence leading to the world class culture-based university. It was an effort in maintaining the indigenous wisdom of Bali. “To maintain the indigenous wisdom, we can do it through the synergy of the expressive and progressive to result in mutual reinforcement,” he said. SINGARAJA - Tourist visit to Lovina Beach tends to increase due to the attractive icon of dolphin. Here, there are two types of dolphin, namely the red and black one,” he said. For promotion of dolphin attraction at high sea to local or foreign travelers, his party was commonly

assisted by hotels around Lovina. “When having cooperation with travel agencies, tourist visit can usually continue. Otherwise, it is difficult to get guest every day. At least, there are about two or three guests staying at hotel just wishing to see sunset view and take photos on Lovina Beach,” said the man having worked as tour guide since 1999. He said the recent Lovina Sail activity had positive impact on the increasing tourist visits. However, he complained that foreign travelers tended to be getting smarter and save their expenses at Lovina tourist resort. “In the past, after taking dolphin sightseeing, guests can be invited to have meals at restaurant, so that we can get commission.

GIANYAR - After a long dormant and almost gives an impression of superfluous market building, finally the project owned by the Gianyar Industry and Trade Agency granted to Blahbatuh customary village was functioned as a market by the public. A number of traders at the courtyard morning market and car boots at the Blahbatuh Market were relocated to enliven the Yadnya Market of Blahbatuh. Relocation of the traders was conducted on Tuesday morning (Sep 30) around 03:00 a.m. local time. It was directly monitored by Subdistrict Head of Blahbatuh Gede Krya Gunarta, Chief of Blahbatuh Police Wayan Supartha, official of the Industry and Trade Agency, municipal police, chief of

Blahbatuh customary village and customary security guard of Blahbatuh. The traders usually selling at the Blahbatuh Public Market, located adjacent to the intersection of Blahbatuh, were banned and then relocated to sell at the courtyard of the Yadnya Market in the north of the Blahbatuh Public Square. Approximately 25 traders of car boots and 86 courtyard traders existing at the Blahbatuh Public Market were relocated to the Yadnya Market of Blahbatuh whose building was the assistance of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the RI in 2012 covering an area of 7,000 square meters. The presence of the traders was to lure the stall traders in order they began to open their selling activity. So far, the stalls at the Yadnya Market have been contracted by

traders, but no one opened theirs because it was still quiet. “With the relocation of the car boots and the courtyard traders, many stall traders ultimately tempted to open and it was then crowded enough,” said the Chief of the Yadnya Market,

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Rare respiratory virus, paralysis spreads among US kids

WASHINGTON - An unusual respiratory virus has sickened more than 400 children across the United States, and the emergence of sudden paralysis in some Colorado youths is sparking concern among doctors. The nationwide outbreak of enterovirus D68 -- which can cause wheezing and coughing -- coincided with the hospitalization of nine children due to limb weakness in Colorado since early August, and officials are investigating if there is any link between the two. The nine children in Colorado “had respiratory illness and later developed neurologic illness,”

BANGLI - The Bangli Environment Agency (BLH) planned to make site inspection to all hotel and restaurant service providers on the edge of Lake Batur. It was intended to look for the culprits directly disposing of wastewater into the lake. “Later, we will make an inspection. We will explore all the hotels and restaurants existing at the edge of Lake Batur,” said the Division Head of the Environmental Impact Management, Bangli Environment Agency, Gusti Laksana, Tuesday (Sep 30). The inspection plan was kindled by the recent finding of the Environment Agency seeing that one of the hot spring tourist attractions at lakeside was alleged to have drained wastewater directly into the Lake Batur. At the rear part of the tourist attraction, the officer saw in person the direct flow of water from the area near the pool into the lake. The agency suspected the water flow

sourced from the excessive water of the swimming pool. If the water sourced from the excessive water of the swimming pool without going through the process of wastewater management in advance, then the water potentially polluted the lake water because the water of swimming pool contained quite high chlorine. “As soon as possible we’ll check and analyze the quality standard,” he added. Gusti Laksana also said that his party would cross-check the permit of wastewater management owned by the businessmen in relation to the wastewater disposal into the Lake Batur. As set forth in the law on the environmental management, any company disposing of wastewater should have a permit of wastewater disposal or wastewater utilization. The death toll from last Saturday’s surprise eruption at Mount Ontake stands at 48 after Wednesday’s additions, Nagano prefectural police said. Prefectural and police officials said most bodies were found around the summit, where many climbers were resting or having lunch. The Ground Self-Defense Forces helicopters brought more than a dozen bodies to the foot of the mountain Wednesday.

Amid the scarcity, some petrol station employees of Padangkerta, Amlapura committed fraud by reducing the volume of Pertamax purchased by consumers. So far, the actions committed for a long time was never disciplined. The Premium scarcity has occurred since Tuesday morning at the petrol station of Subagan to Padangkerta. The employees on duty at the petrol station only served the purchase of Pertamax. Unfortunately, amid the fuel shortages, a number of unscrupulous employees of the petrol stations even committed a fraud. A consumer admitted to have just been fooled by an employee of petrol station at Padangkerta. He said an anonymous female employee at the petrol station did not neutralize the flow meter of fuel dispenser to zero point. Even, she did not give the exact volume of fuel purchased for the motorcycle. “I purchased for IDR 10,000 but the refueling was only worth IDR 8,500,” said Komang Sumantara, Tuesday (Sep 30). He added: “When it comes to its ultimate goals, Hamas is ISIS, and ISIS is Hamas.” Obama and Netanyahu last met in March while the Israelis and Palestinians were still engaged in a U.S.-mediated peace process. The discussions collapsed without a peace accord. Both Netanyahu and Abbas appear to have abandoned any hope of reviving peace talks, though each is pressing separate diplomatic initiatives. WASHINGTON — The United States and Brazil have resolved a decade-long trade battle over subsidies Washington provided to American cotton growers, an official close to the negotiations said late Tuesday. The agreement would resolve a bitter trade fight that had strained relations between the two countries since 2002 when Brazil brought a case against the United States charging that the subsidies Washington paid American cotton farmers were a violation of global trade rules. The World Trade Organization ruled in Brazil’s favor and the United States had been forced to make annual payments to Brazil.

PARIS - France’s finance minister on Wednesday forecast that the country’s budget deficit would scrape below the European Union ceiling by 2017, as he unveiled his annual budget. Michel Sapin told reporters that the deficit would be 2.8 percent of gross domestic output in 2017, just below the EU’s three-percent ceiling. France had promised Brussels it would get below the three-percent limit next year but in a dramatic aboutturn earlier this month, pushed back the commitment by two years. Sapin also forecast a very gradual recovery for the crisis-hit French economy, which he said would reach a level of two percent growth only in 2018. The economy is projected to grow by only 0.4 percent this year, recovering progressively to 1.0 percent in 2015, 1.7 percent in 2016 and 1.9 percent in 2017. The minister said the economy would then grow by two percent in 2018 and 2019. France is struggling through a deep economic crisis, with zero growth in the previous two quarters and skyhigh unemployment. The response of President Francois Hollande’s deeply unpopular government has been a controversial package of tax cuts financed by cuts in public spending. Hollande hopes to offer businesses some 40 billion euros ($50 billion) in tax breaks over three years in return for creating 500,000 jobs. But given the parlous state of France’s public finances, he intends to pay for these tax breaks with 50 billion euros in public spending cuts -- a measure that has proved highly unpopular with the left flank of Hollande’s Socialist Party. Sapin stressed that he would stick to the target of 21 billion euros in public spending this year and 50 billion over three years. In a symbolic measure of the crisis France is facing, the statistics office on Tuesday announced that the country’s national debt had risen above the bar of 2.0 trillion euros for the first time -- or 95.1 percent of GDP. European Union rules say that debt must not exceed 60 percent of GDP, or be falling significantly towards this ratio.

NEW YORK - US online retail giant eBay unveiled plans Tuesday to spin off PayPal, aiming to help the unit compete better in the fast-moving online payments segment. The plan, to take effect next year, comes after months of pressure led by activist investor Carl Icahn, who had assailed eBay for poor management and claimed that keeping eBay tied with PayPal depressed the value of both. An eBay statement said that a board review concluded that “a changing competitive landscape creates enormous opportunities for eBay and PayPal” and that “separation will create sharper strategic focus” for each unit. Company president and chief executive John Donahoe said that “for more than a decade, eBay and PayPal have mutually benefited from being part of one company,” but that the situation had now changed. “A thorough strategic review with our board shows that keeping eBay and

performed by a girl in a variation of the legong costume and in the traditional legong steps. The man invited must dance with her in postures that represent a love game of approach and refusal (ngibing), in which the man tries to come near enough to the girl’s face to catch her perfume and feel the warmth of her skin, the Balinese form of a kiss. Although the lake water overflows and floods the outermost courtyard of the temple, it does not dampen the Pande community to say prayers. It aims at invoking safety, especially in carrying out the profession as a weapon maker. The temple poses the forerunner of the birth of Pande clan since ancient times. It is located about 65 km north of Denpasar, or about 30 km south of Singaraja town. Precisely, the temple is situated among the four villages namely the Munduk, Gobleg, Gesing and

Umajero. The closest village to the temple is Tamblingan hamlet, belonging to Munduk Village. The Pande Tamblingan Temple perching on the verge of Lake Tamblingan spread across the area of 2,000 square meters. In the temple the devotees venerate the Lord Pasupati (Lord Brahma), LingamYoni as well as the ancestors of Pande clan. Aside from Pande clan at the four villages, the temple is also venerated by Pande clan from Celuk and Bitra Village (Gianyar), Kayu Putih and Baturiti Village. Pujawali or anniversary of the temple falls on full moon of the

first month in Balinese calendar. Devotees came to the temple by passing through the woods and riding traditional boat services operated by lake fishermen. On the inscription originating from Ugrasena period, it was mentioned if the Pande community had been capable of making an armor used in a war, while the inscription from the period of Udayana and Suradipha mentioned the existence of papilihan mas and pwesi as well as Selonding gamelan. “The inscription states that Pande community and Selonding gamelan players got the exemption from

the obligation of paying taxes,” he added. During the leadership of Bali ancient kingdom the King Asta Sura Bumi Banten was not subject to the authority of Majapahit. As consequence, a troop under the commander of the Arya Cengceng was assigned to attack the Pande community. Based on the information of secret service, Gajah Mada knew if Tamblingan was the center of the arms industry of the kings in Bali. Afterward, the settlement of Pande Tamblingan was attacked. Its amphibian forces were spread to all corners of Bali.

Now the market and the homes are gone. Monumental luxury hotel towers crowd around the Grand Mosque where the Kaaba is located, dwarfing it. Steep rocky hills overlooking the mosque have been leveled and are now covered

with cranes building more towers in row after row. “My father and all the people who lived in Mecca wouldn’t recognize it,” said al-Bar, who is now Mecca’s mayor. As Muslims from around the

world stream into Mecca for the annual hajj pilgrimage this week, they come to a city undergoing the biggest transformation in its history. Decades ago, this was a lowbuilt city of centuries-old neighbor-

hoods Over the years, it saw piecemeal renewal projects. But in the mid-2000s, the kingdom launched its most ambitious overhaul ever with a series of mega-projects that, though incomplete, have already reshaped Mecca. Old neighborhoods have been erased for hotel towers and malls built right up to the edge of the Grand Mosque. Historic sites significant for Islam have been demolished. THE HAGUE — Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic insisted Wednesday that United Nations prosecutors do not have “a shred of evidence” linking him to atrocities throughout the Bosnian war, and accused them of putting the entire Serb people on trial. In an 874-page written brief summarizing his defense, Karadzic said he should not be convicted by the U.N.’s Yugoslav war crimes tribunal, but acknowledged that, as wartime leader of the breakaway Serb entity in Bosnia, he “bears moral responsibility for any crimes committed by citizens and forces of Republika Srpska.” Karadzic is charged with crimes including genocide and persecution committed by Bosnian Serb forces during the 1992-95 war that left 100,000 dead. BEIJING — The 10,000 pigeons released in a ceremony Wednesday for China’s National Day underwent unusual scrutiny, each having its feathers and anus checked for dangerous materials, state-run media reports said, reflecting government jitters over possible attacks. The symbols of peace were released at sunrise in Beijing’s symbolic heart of Tiananmen Square in a ceremony for the Oct. 1 holiday to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Beijing domestic security police officer Guo Chunwei was quoted in the Jinghua Times as saying workers checked the wings, legs and anus of each pigeon ahead of time to ensure they were “not carrying suspicious material.” The entire process was videotaped, and the birds were then loaded into sealed vehicles for the trip to Tiananmen Square, the newspaper said. A similar report appeared in the Beijing News, and the People’s Daily tweeted about it in English: “10,000 pigeons go through anal security check for suspicious objects Tue, ready to be released on National Day on Wed.” The reports — which did not say what the suspicious materials might be — drew amused and derisive responses from some Chinese readers, and many news sites, including the

Beijing News website, later deleted the reports. However, the Jinghua Times report and the People’s Daily tweet were still visible as of midday Wednesday. Members of the Chinese public responded with sarcasm because they see in the pigeon body searches their own plight in what they consider an oppressive society with tight surveillance, censorship and judicial injustice, independent columnist Zhang Ping said in an editorial that was circulated on social media under his pen name, Changping. “The liberty and dignity of citizens are increasingly vulnerable, and can be expropriated at any time, like with the pigeons,” Zhang wrote. “They have to go through the pains and insults of the rude anal check and yet they must appear peaceful and happy on the screen of the state broadcaster.” The notched-up security measures reflect heightened concern about violence following a string of attacks blamed on separatist militants from the country’s ethnic Uighur Muslim minority, as well as bus explosions and random slashing attacks attributed to disgruntled individuals. Last October, three Uighurs in a vehicle rammed through crowds in front of Tiananmen Gate in central Beijing and set off explosives in an attack that killed themselves and three bystanders.

August trade balance swings to deficit Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s trade balance unexpectedly swung back to a deficit in August, official data showed Wednesday, a setback for Southeast Asia’s top economy as it struggles to recover after a turbulent period. However, while the statistics agency attributed the $318.1 million deficit to a surge in imports it added that most were capital goods, such as machinery for manufacturing, as opposed to consumer goods. The government is trying to ramp up manufacturing and wean itself off imports of consumer products as it tries to get people, especially the emerging middle class, to buy Indonesian rather than foreign goods. The market had expected the trade balance to remain in surplus for a second consecutive month. “This will put pressure on Indonesia’s current account deficit, which had been improving on the back of better trade numbers because imports were falling,” Kenny Soejatman, an economist from Manulife Asset Management Indonesia, told AFP. However, Standard Chartered Bank said the increase in machinery

imports showed businesses were confident after July’s peaceful presidential election. Trade is a key part of the current account, which hit a near-record deficit of $9.1 billion, or 4.27 percent of GDP, in the second quarter this year. The widening current account deficit was a key concern of foreign investors last year when Indonesia was hard hit by emerging market turmoil as the US Federal Reserve said it was preparing to wind down its stimulus. The rupiah lost more than 20 percent of its value during the turmoil and stocks also plummeted. Also Wednesday HSBC said its purchasing managers index of manufacturing activity rebounded in September to 50.7 from a 12-month low of 49.5 in August. A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while below signals contraction. September inflation remained tame at 4.53 percent on-year, up slightly from 3.99 percent the previous month, and gives the incoming government -- which takes over this month -- room to reduce fuel subsidies, a major drain on the state budget.

Valentino Rossi has no concerns about his fitness for the forthcoming MotoGP races, after being released from hospital following his violent crash at Aragon. The Yamaha rider visited Alcaniz hospital for a CT scan on Sunday, and had a follow-up check at the MotoGP Clinica Mobile on Monday morning. “I’m fine, everything is OK, and this is the most important thing,” said Rossi, who also visited his Yamaha team while it did promotional filming at the track with Jorge Lorenzo following his final medical check. “I did not injure myself too much except for a big bump to the head. “Last night I had a little headache but today I’m fine, I’m 100 per cent.” Rossi’s accident occurred when he ran wide over the kerbs on lap four of the Aragon Grand Prix. “Unfortunately, like [Andrea] Iannone I went onto the artificial grass,” he said. “This is always very dangerous and especially in these cases be-
